Rose Quartz and Serenity
Pantone is the international colour authority and each year they announce the colour/s that reflect consumers' moods. They say that currently consumers are seeking mindfulness and wellbeing as an antidote to modern-day stresses and a yearning for reassurance and security. Pantone has this to say about the 2016 colours: "Rose Quartz is a warm rose tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. It reminds us to reflect on our surroundings. Serenity comforts with a cooler tranquil blue that has a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times." I was travelling home from the beach one evening and saw these colours blended in the sky just above Mawson Lakes, so decided to feature them throughout the magazine for your enjoyment. Fixed dates for Easter In your editorial in MLL/March you asked why we cannot have a fixed date for Easter. It would make things much easier to plan. A fixed date for Easter is the subject of landmark reforms being considered by world church leaders. The trouble is getting all churches to agree. The Vatican proposed a fixed date in 1990 but failed to gain global agreement. They are still working on it, but don’t expect anything to happen anytime soon! - Shazza Bentley Keep Australia the way it is I'm in favour of keeping the Australian political system the way it is with the reigning monarch as the Head of State. As far as I see it, the British Royal Family costs Australia nothing to maintain, they do not interfere with us but they strengthen our connections with other Commonwealth countries. These connections facilitate trade, tourism and international relations. Royalty visits us from time to time and adds significant colour and delight to our calendar. They represent international goodwill and democratic stability, and by virtue of her post, the Queen is incorruptible. Compare this with the instability of Australia's back-stabbing political parliament - four prime ministers in five years. Why abolish our British connections and go it alone down here in Australia. And, on a practical note, think of what an Australian President would cost us - salary and pension, a huge house, staff salaries, entertainment for grand occasions, and travel expenses. I shudder to think of it. - Betty Butler, Shoalhaven Dogs Day Out call for help After four successful years, Dogs Day Out is taking a rest in 2016. The event has grown in size, attendance and popularity to the point where it takes a huge amount of organising. We have generous sponsors who have been with us from the start and make the event possible financially, however, each year we have to look for donations for prizes, doggy bags, raffles etc. Then there are the stall holders to enlist, the advertising, the demonstrations to organise, and a multitude of other tasks. It’s a lot of work for a small group of

Legal Eagle’s Swan Song My sincerest thanks to MLL for helping turn a fledging business into a busy thriving legal firm in Mawson Lakes. I must regretfully confess that my life is now so busy I find it increasingly difficult to meet the monthly deadlines to write my 'Legal Eagle' column for the magazine. I’ve always thought I’d like to run a newspaper but now I realise that reallife magazine editors face the constant pressure of publication deadlines. Somehow that wasn’t in my dreams. Linda, you are a driving force in our community and it has been a personal delight to work with you over the last three years. Perhaps I will write a letter to the editor from time to time. - Bill Morris, Northside Lawyers dedicated volunteers and as fast as one event is over we seem to be working on the next one. We are now down to a team of just 2 on the planning committee and so this year we are taking a break. To run again in 2017 we need more people on our planning committee to share the workload. Cuts to Australia Post I agree with Ginny's comments about Australia Post's amazing strategy for a failing business to cuts services and increase costs (MLL/ Feb). The only thing that should be cut is the exorbitant salary of the CEO. - Robert Eidenhart The Nuclear State So Ministers and Mayors read MLL (March), well I hope they read my letter because we want a say on whether SA will be a nuclear dump. Nuclear waste disposal may pour $$$ into government coffers and offer jobs in the short term, but at what cost. SA will be identified as the world’s biggest dumping ground for the most dangerous stuff on earth that nobody else wants. What damage will it do to our present clean, green, healthy, sporty image. Who would want to visit the Nuclear State? - Jill Messiah
Mobile phone warning Driving home the other night we saw a university student being mugged on the rail bridge by 2 thieves who were after his mobile phone. We were able to assist the victim who was very shaken up, and call the police. Other mobile phones have been stolen in our area so please be careful when using your phone and do not leave it in your car - Karen, The Cascades. Parking Problems As soon as uni goes back, parking is impossible in ML. Students show little regard for residents and park across driveways, in shopping spots, at the community centre and the library. Who can we contact about this problem? Lonely Hearts
Newspapers I am fed up with Adelaide’s newspapers. Cover stories are so full of sporting junk that we now call it the 'sports news'. Day after day in February the paper pushed kids books at us in a wave of self-interested reading promotion because if reading standards fall, interest in reading news sites will decline. And the information in the national paper is repeated in the local papers so we are served the same dish over and over. No wonder local newspapers sit rotting on the verge and the national paper is losing subscribers. Thank heavens for Mawson Lakes Living - what an intelligent contrast. Appreciated that story on Codan (MLL/March). I wondered what was happening on that corner. - Kiel Sarandon

YoungHo Lee has come to Mawson Lakes on a two-year sabbatical from Mokpo National University. He is working with Professor Mark Billinghurst in the new Empathic Computing Lab at the UniSA Mawson Lakes campus. Their research uses Augmented Reality to improve remote collaboration, or in other words they are finding ways to add computer-generated information (video, graphics, sounds) to

Measuring Population Growth In February, Australia’s population reached 24 million. In Adelaide the population is growing at a rate of 1.2 per cent per year which is slow compared to other capital cities, but in Mawson Lakes the population is growing at a much higher rate than the average, according to the last census that was taken in 2011. It will be interesting to see what the next census in 2016 will tell us about the demographics of Mawson Lakes. The next national census will be held this year on August 9. It is conducted every 5 years, and for the first time ever, it’s going digital. This year we will be able to complete the survey on a mobile phone, an iPad, or any other electronic device. The paper option will still be available for those who are not able to fill it out online. 6

Youngho is working on an experiment that can measure the vital signs – heartrate, blood pressure, temperature – of people you are talking to in a video conference, with their permission, of course, and display it on your computer screen so you know how they are feeling during the call. Sharing emotions in this way could help colleagues understand each other better, especially when doing joint tasks that are stressful or when having important discussions. Youngho is here with his wife, Hyoyoung, and their five-year old daughter. Youngho’s niece, nephew, and mother-in-law have also come along, and they are all are enjoying the more relaxed pace of life in Australia and the beauty of Mawson Lakes. They can be seen walking along the lakes, enjoying the vibrant evening skies and the amazing birdlife. Their first impressions of Mawson Lakes – it’s very hot, people are really friendly, and there are lots of ants. New Business - Migo's BBQ Inn A party of people were celebrating a birthday with a crackling pig on the spit when I visited the new restaurant in The Cascade. Migo and Anela who live in Mawson Lakes opened the business in February on the ground level of the Parade Apartments, just off Elder Smith Road. Migo comes originally from Serbia and has been cooking for 12 years and loves it. "It’s the best job I’ve ever had," he said as he turned the pig over the hot coals. "I was up this morning at 6am to prepare the beast." He cooked it to succulent perfection over 4 hours and then served it with a salad and bread roll. "We will do a pig or lamb for a minimum group of 10 and it makes an unusual focal point for a party," he said. The spacious restaurant can seat a large crowd or a meeting and Migo and Anela pride themselves on the quality of their meat. The MLL team had a meeting at Migo’s with a lunch of stuffed mushrooms and chicken wings. The food was excellent and we loved the warm hospitality and generosity of this engaging husband and wife team.

Regional dialects Is it cossie or bathers? It was a hot day so we decided to head to the beach and I said to my friend, "I’ll grab my cossie." "What's a cossie," he said? "My swimmers, my togs," I replied. "Oh, you mean your bathers? In Adelaide we call them bathers," he explained. Being a Sydney girl I used the Sydney word for swimwear, but now in Adelaide I try to remember to call them bathers. This conversation made me aware of regional dialects and this drew my attention to a study by a group of linguists who are looking at regional differences in the Australian language. Dr Kingstone, a Californian studying at the Australian National University is conducting a nationwide survey to determine if Australians observe regional dialects. She is examining if people in rural areas sound different from those living in cities and if people in different parts, such as Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia sound different from each other.

She has observed that many Aussies recognise different words for the same thing and our lingo can tell where we are from. According to the study, we also use different regional pronunciations, for example, "dance" and "school". Here are a couple of examples: When you eat cold meat in a sandwich is it devon (NSW) luncheon (Victoria) or fritz (SA). Dressed in my "bathers" I went into a fish shop and asked for "potato scallops" only to be told that in SA they are called "potato cakes". And at the footy do you buy a frankfurt, cheerio, little boy or footy frank? In NSW a digging pick is a mattock and in SA the same tool is a grubber. Property Tips with Ben Frank What is Negative Gearing? Negative gearing is a term used to describe borrowing money to buy an investment asset (most commonly a rental property) when the outgoing expenses (interest and maintenance) are more than the incomings (rental earnings). These losses can be written off against other sources of taxable income during the year. Negative gearing can apply to any business, not just residential property investment. After several years it is expected that the investment will become profitable and negative gearing is a way to ease the burden of establishing oneself in the market. Properties do not remain negatively geared forever, over time the rent increases and the owner pays down their mortgage – eventually the income is greater than the expenses and the property becomes positively geared. This income is taxable at the owner’s personal tax rate. If the owner holds the property for the long term it should provide them with a steady and sustainable income when they retire and so reduce their reliance on government pensions. Negative gearing has been blamed for driving property prices up. The theory goes it encourages investors into the market and that in turn pushes home owners out. In contrast, property prices are actually set by emotional owner occupier buyers, not by investors who look for affordability. The property sector is one of the largest sources of revenue for the South Australian Government, namely through property taxes and stamp duty. If negative gearing was abolished it may cause a decrease in activity as investors make fewer purchases, and therefore lead to a drop in state government revenue, possibly leading to increases in other taxes. This is not the first time negative gearing has been debated. It was abolished in 1985 only to be reinstated in 1987 when the government realized that by making property investment undesirable they caused a drop in availability of housing for people who could not afford or did not desire to own their own home, and the need for government housing sharply increased. Make a pinecone bird feeder
You will need: pinecone/s peanut butter bird seed sturdy string paper plate
Use string to tie a knot around the top of your pinecone leaving up to a metre of extra length for hanging. Scoop peanut butter all over your pinecone. Make sure to get a good thick layer of coverage. Pour bird seed onto paper plate and roll your pinecone over the seed until it is completely covered. Refrigerate for an hour, then hang on a branch and see who comes to visit!
Ingress - Google's Real-World Smart Phone Game in ML Ingress is a multi-player real-world augmented reality game, which means it is installed on your phone, but gameplay takes place in the real world, powered by your device's GPS. The game has a complex science fiction back story, which is not necessary for playing and enjoying the game but is part of the appeal for many of its seven million plus players around the globe. Most of the action takes place at "portals," which are disguised as everyday objects and usually found at places of human creativity or cultural significance that draw people together. You’ll find portals at museums, historic landmarks, parks and public spaces, and other places of interest. Ingress has featured the purple bicycle on the fence of the MLL building as 'Blooming Bike' and used it as one of many local portal keys (see illustration) . Ingress is GPS-based. As you physically approach portals, you can use your "scanner" (phone) to "hack" them and earn points and awards. Ingress encourages you to get out and explore your community. The safest times to drive. . . or not drive The most dangerous day of the week to be on the roads is Friday, according to statistics from South Australia’s Royal Automobile Association. And during the week the most likely time for a prang is between 3pm and 5pm. RAA crash data analysis shows that most accidents occurred in peak hour when people
knocked off work, but the earlier times are associated with more parents driving children to and from school and to afternoon activities. When drivers were questioned about a prang, 59 per cent said that carelessness was the biggest contributing factor to their crash, and 29 per cent said distraction. Parents said that children in the car are a big distraction and 27 per cent cited this as a cause of distracted driving. This was followed by the use of mobile phones. Rear-end collisions are the most common form of accidents accounting for more than 40 percent of accidents. RAA advises parents to concentrate on their driving when kids are in the car and not turn their attention away from the road for even a second, as accidents can change lives. You cannot go back and undo an accident or tragedy.

A full sun location is preferred although it will grow in light shade. Mine gets morning sun and afternoon shade. It’s a hardy plant that tolerates dry conditions. I water it deeply during extended dry periods and apply a slow release fertiliser during spring. A light prune after the main flower flushes helps maintain a neat, compact shape and encourages further flower production. Ed

Discovery of Gravity Waves
How many five cent coins do you have in your wallet? Not many? You’ve thrown them into the car glove box , your kids moneybag or the charity jar haven’t you? Your neglect towards the smallest piece of Australian currency has not been ignored. Head of the Royal Australian Mint, Ross MacDiarmid, admits the five cent coin is in slow decline. "Due to underuse, it is predicted that production will decrease over time and dissipate that way," MacDiarmid said. The coin is becoming irrelevant with many parking meters and coin-operated machines no longer accepting the piece. Our cashless payment systems mean we do not need coins and the rise of electronic payment methods, including contactless options means Aussies are less likely to carry cash. And it costs more to press out those shiny echidnas than the five cents they represent. Changes are also on the way for our quirkiest shaped coin, the 50 cent piece, which is expected to undergo a design change. The 50 cent piece was originally round but was changed to the 12 sided design in 1969 to avoid confusion with the 20 cent piece. MacDiarmind has dismissed returning the 50c shape to round but has said its large size is an issue that needs to be addressed. A recent survey carried out by the Royal Australian Mint showed many vending machine operators found the large size of the 50c piece a nuisance, with some machines no longer accepting the coin. Ed

Their existence had been predicted in 1916 by Albert Einstein but it wasn’t until this year, 100 years on, that Scientists were able to announce that they had actually detected and measured this remarkable and elusive phenomena. This discovery opens the door to a completely new way of detecting and measuring our Universe.
The Laser Interferometer GravitationalWave Observatory (LIGO) began operating in 2002 and was upgraded to an advanced version (aLIGO) which began taking measurements in September last year. The Observatory consists of two observatory sites, on either side of North America, simultaneously looking for the signal of a Gravity Wave as it travels past and through the earth. Each site uses two 4km long laser beams at right angles, reflected multiple times to detect any variation between the two distances. The Gravitational Wave signal is contained within this measured variation. On the 14 of September, two days after aLIGO started collecting data a signal was detected at both sites. Recipe - ANZAC biscuits During the First World War families baked biscuits to send to their loved ones overseas. Based on a traditional Scottish oat cake recipe, ANZAC biscuits (previously known simply as soldier's biscuits) were made from readily available ingredients with the addition of golden syrup to keep them moist and preserve them on their long journey. Anzac Biscuits - Makes approximately 24 Ingredients 1 cup plain flour 1 cup rolled oats 2/3 cup desiccated coconut 3/4 cup sugar 125g butter 3 tablespoons Golden Syrup 1/2 teaspoon bi-carb soda 2 tablespoons boiling water Method Mix togther flour, sugar, coconut and rolled oats. Combine melted butter and golden syrup. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to butter and syrup mixture. Make a well in the centre of the flour mix and pour in the liquid. Stir until combined. Roll spoonfulls into small balls and place 5cm apart on a lined tray. Bake in a preheated oven for 15-20 minutes at 160 degrees.

She was involved in lots of things in Mawson Lakes - she helped her family deliver Mawson Lakes Living and she was there year after year packing bags for Dogs Day Out.
