Pride in our place I was thrilled to learn that Mawson Lakes Living has been nominated for a Pride of Australia Medal for Community Spirit.

I'd like to see Mawson Lakes become a magnet of culture and creativity in the North. It takes time and effort, but It's happening. Dogs Day Out in September draws thousands of people (see page 6) and our beautiful Twilight Concert in October is attracting attention throughout Adelaide as the posters go up (see opposite).

Happy people look back on the past with gladness, look into the future with hope and look at the present with appreciation.

Our standout covers are reserved for local photographers and painters who capture the beauty of the environment, and this month the arresting image is by resident John MacGregor. Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Advertising is open to anyone with products, services or events relevant to the people of Mawson Lakes. This issue is a perfect example of community connectivity. It points to upcoming events, profiles new businesses, announces new office bearers and shows what’s happening on the social scene. It also alerts you to some dangers.

Mawson Lakes Living initiates, sponsors and supports many endeavours and at present a student is doing work experience with us, so, as well as producing a top-notch publication, we are helping the next generation "learn the ropes".

In a time when newspapers are slashing jobs, journalists are being cut from the ranks, free papers are being scrapped and home deliveries are being stopped, I'm pleased to report that your community magazine is growing stronger. More that 6,000 copies are hand-delivered each month to local homes, businesses and community centres. And I'm amazed to see just how far beyond Mawson Lakes the magazine travels.

Have you ever seen The Sanctuary bathed in such glorious light?

This little magazine unites the many elements of ML by sharing stories and building community engagement. It is often described as "the glue that binds the community together."

Cover photograph I was thrilled to see my photograph on the cover in June. That month my website had 1,500 hits. Amazing! - John Nason MacGregor Human cost of computerisation My father is a highly qualified engineer who has worked in the mining industry all his life, but now he and his colleagues cannot find a job in mining. The jobs have dried up. The reason is clear in MLL/ July. Advanced technologies are computerising every aspect of mining to the point where mines can be operated remotely without the need for truck drivers, maintenance teams, supervisors etc. There is no doubt that smart technologies result in huge savings for mining companies but what about the human cost? I see a cloud of depression creeping over these once proud breadwinners who are now out of work. - L B Penridge Avoid shoulder slamming Many people from other cultures live in Mawson Lakes and they may not understand our code of walking (and driving) and this often causes a shuffle on the footpath, or worse, shoulder slamming in a busy place. In Australia we keep to the left (on the roads and on the footpaths) so if you see someone coming towards you in the opposite direction, keep to the left. If it’s a narrow path, drop back to a single file so others can to pass without interrupting the flow. - Kerry Black Junk food for birds I have lived in Mawson Lakes for two and a half years and love the area, and of course the magazine! I have just got home from walking my dog Hank where I saw two women feeding the ducks at the lake with a loaf of bread each. Bread is the equivalent of junk food for birds, and too much bread can lead to excessive weight and malnutrition, as well as many other problems. Is there any chance of putting up signs around the lakes with information explaining to people why it’s doing more harm than good? - Adam Glass, The Peppercorns

Each month a copy of MLL arrives in my mailbox at Innovation House. I sit down with a cuppa and read right through it. I like the business profiles and the community comments because this is a fantastic platform for public feeling, not like magazines that are promo driven. Every community should have something like this to air opinions. I have 2 dogs so I always enjoy the doggie page too. Trish Pollock - DesignTP Brand Communications Unacceptable behaviour Often contractors who come into Mawson Lakes to do a job care little about the local environment or the residents. They park on the walkways, chew up the grass, crack concrete gutters and leave behind rubbish and building materials. I urge residents to take a photograph and contact Council immediately if they see contractors doing the wrong thing or engaging in unacceptable behaviour. At The Cove we witnessed a contractor urinating against a residential fence. This is not acceptable behaviour to us.- SJ Tasmania, we're coming over Thank you Nigella for your article on dog-friendly holidays (MLL/June). As a result, we have decided to take a family holiday to Tasmania and we want to take our little dog Teddy, with us. Your story on your trip to Tasmania told us how to do it. - Darena

Protection from Elder Abuse Australia’s population is ageing rapidly. As a percentage of the total population, the number of people aged 65 and over will rise to 28 percent by 2051 and 31 percent by 2100. While age brings wisdom and knowledge, it can also bring frailty and vulnerability, and sadly, elder abuse. Elder abuse is harm caused by another person in a position of trust. It can take a variety of forms such physical abuse (being hit, pushed or slapped), psychological (yelled at, threatened or humiliated), financial (money withheld or demanded), social (restricting or stopping activities), sexual (inappropriate touching, indecent assault or harassment), or neglect (failure to provide necessities or withholding medication or affection if the senior does not comply).

Manager of Trinity Green Retirement Village at Mawson Lakes, Robyn Trestrail, with resident Barbara Chirgwin at the Elder Abuse Awareness Board at Trinity Green.

respect and to live without exploitation. Everybody has a basic right to be and feel safe," said Melissa.

The most frequent form of abuse reported is financial abuse, and the most common perpetrators are sons and daughters.

To safeguard against exploitation, agencies who work in the aged care sector are encouraged to develop policies to identify and respond to older people who may be experiencing some form of abuse.

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Trinity Green Retirement Village hosted an awareness raising session on elder abuse for residents, where Melissa Heywood, an aged care advocate provided advice on staying self-aware.

Agencies are also helping seniors be as independent as possible and to continue to play an active role in the community. "If older people are supported they feel empowered to make better decisions for themselves," said Melissa.

Melissa said that elder abuse is often a hidden problem because aged people fear that action may be taken against a family member if they speak out and things could get worse.

Her advice to seniors is to plan for your future, keep active in the community and seek independent advice before committing to, or signing any legal document. Make sure your documentation, such as your Will, Power of Attorney and Advanced Care Directive are up-todate according to your wishes. Ed

New Rotary President A younger, community-focussed and dynamic club is the aim of the new president of Rotary Mawson Lakes, Sherif Salama, who took up office in July. Sherif has lived in Mawson Lakes for seven years with his wife and two daughters. He is originally from Egypt where he graduated in the fine arts architecture department. Today he works as a project planner in the defence industry. The strong sense of community and the diverse cross-section of people are features of Mawson Lakes that Sherif wants to incorporate into the Rotary Club. "My plan is to develop a strategic plan for the next three years and initiate joint projects with businesses, other clubs and service organisations in order to support local endeavours." "I hope to introduce new ideas and new people to the Rotary Club," he said. The club meets each Tuesday at 6.30pm. Contact Sherif at sherif@rotaryclubmawsonlakes.org

New Business: Boeing opens in Mawson Lakes Global aerospace giant Boeing opened its first South Australian office in Technology Park, Mawson Lakes in June. The planes are designed to undertake broad-area intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions around the world. The P-8A will carry complex and sensitive sensors, communications system and weapons including torpedoes and missiles. Mr Hamilton-Smith said the arrival of these aircraft will cement South Australia’s position as the nation’s centre of airborne maritime surveillance capability. "Boeing has established its Mawson Lakes office to ensure flight and maintenance crews are ready to work on the P-8A aircraft. While they are starting small, the Boeing-led P-8A training team will grow over the coming years as activity on the base ramps up." At Technology Park, Boeing will keep abreast of the defence-related activity across northern Adelaide – a region that continues to provide a very large proportion of the defence industry activity in Australia.

New Business - Aleenta Barre Helping women achieve a long, slender and toned body is the aim of Aleenta Barr, a dance and fitness studio that opened in Mawson Lakes a few months ago. Classes combine elements of dance, pilates and yoga and through low-impact, small repetitive actions called isometric exercises muscles are lengthened and strengthened. All this is set to music. Co-owner Kylie Roberts is also a co-owner of endota spa in Mawson Lakes. She said she wants women to leave her barre and day spa having had a good experience all round. So at Aleenta Barre each session ends with meditation and a shot of cleansing juice.

Kylie said that her oldest client is 69. "She comes to classes three times a week and she is so well toned that she can swing her leg onto the barre with ease. With age comes different limitations so we modify the exercises to suit different needs and strengths."

Kylie Roberts

Kylie invited MLL readers to try her Three Week Challenge. If you attend for 3 weeks and participate in 10 classes and feel no difference Aleenta will give back your money. Kylie juggles a family with six children plus her two businesses, so MLL asked her how she fits it all into a day. "I get up early," she said, "and basically I’m an organised and focussed person and I enjoy my work. My business ethos is to offer a good product and deliver it on time as a consistent and reliable service." Kerry says that the business is going well in Mawson Lakes and the company is looking to expand into other areas. They are developing a range of products such as grippy sox for use on the dance floor, candles and exercise apparel that will be available later in the year. Ed

Having recently returned from Cambodia I can say that the warmth of the Cambodian smile is something that will never leave me. This is especially so given Dr Peter Bertossa BDS the closeness of Cambodia’s genocide during the Pol Pot era (1974-1979). The Cambodian smile suffered in more ways than one during the genocide era when dental health, like many other things in Cambodia, reached a low point. With education, currency, public transport and the postal system abolished, not much good really happened anywhere.

Following 1979, and as the wheels are gradually being put back on in Cambodia, there was a recommencement of a dental school (1985), and new dentists have been receiving formal qualified training. These now add to the many ‘apprenticeship’ trained dentists and dental nurses who comprise much of the dental workforce in Cambodia.

An oral health survey in 1991 showed that only 6.4% of Cambodian children in Phnom Penh were without decay. This survey has led to a national Oral Health Plan (1992-2000), and gradually the dental health picture is turning around with a combination of education, service delivery and provision of oral health products that are also reaching rural areas.

The daughter’s eggs had been frozen prior to her having cancer treatment intending that if the treatment prevented her from having children, her mother could be a surrogate mother and the daughter would later care for the child. Unhappily the daughter died of her cancer. In England the HEFA which oversees the use of gametes and embryos in fertility treatment opposed the grandmother’s application to use her daughter’s eggs. The Judge ruled that the daughter had not considered or consented to all the factors necessary to make an informed decision permitting use of the frozen embryos. I recently advised on a complicated surrogacy case assisting a same sex couple. It is not well known that surrogacy is legal in South Australia provided there is no payment for the surrogacy service other than necessary expenses. You do not have to go overseas to seek out such an arrangement. It is very important to get full legal advice if you are considering surrogacy.

One quarter of the body's bones are in the feet. The average person walks 10,000 steps per day, our feet carry us the equivalent of five times around the earth in a life time. Women have four times as many foot problems as men. Your feet mirror your general health. There are 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet, sweating as much as 250 mL of moisture per day. Many people buy shoes that do not properly fit their feet. When running, the pressure on your feet exceeds your body weight by four times. Only a small fraction of people who experience foot pain seek necessary treatment. It is rare that two feet are exactly the same, one of them is often larger. Walking is the best exercise for your feet, it improves circulation and weight control.

Sing a song to baby Singing to your baby from birth (even before birth) assists a child’s brain development. Sing anything you like, any way you like. In your baby's eyes, you are an 'Australian Idol', even if your singing is off-key and off-pitch or you forget the words and make up silly mumbles as you go along. 7 Ways Babies Learn When We Sing To Them! 1

Bonding – Yours is the first and most important voice in your baby's life and singing songs develops close bonds.

2

Prediction – Babies feel safe when life is predictable. By having a song for waking up, a lullaby for going to sleep, and songs for other routines you help your baby know what comes next.

3

Rhythm – Tap your feet or clap your hands when singing to baby to introduce rhythm.

4

Play – When you kiss your baby’s feet or tickle his tummy and giggle, baby feels your touch and hears happiness and feels playfulness.

5

Learning their name – A baby can learn its name by hearing it in songs. Use your baby’s name instead of other words in the song so he hears his name over and over again. For example "Harry had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. Harry had a little lamb as white as white as snow."

6

Listening skills – Singing requires listening. Repetition is important. Some simple repetitive songs to sing are: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Row Row Row Your Boat, The Wheels On The Bus, Mary Had A Little Lamb.

7

Love – All of the above express love. Babies don't care if you can't sign or are tone deaf. They only care that they are the centre of your world and singing to them is a sure sign. Ed

At the movies - REVIEW Far From The Madding Crowd Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, Far From The Madding Crowd is the ravishing love story of an independent, attractive and strongwilled young woman, Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) who attracts three very different suitors.

well-to-do landowner William Boldwood and the unprincipled cad Sergeant Francis Troy who has a not-so-hidden agenda. Which one does she marry? She makes the wrong choice for the wrong reasons and everyone lives to regret it, until the end of the movie when good triumphs over bad.

Headstrong Bathsheba is toiling on a farm when a poor but strong manly shepherd named Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts) proposes marriage. She declines his offer because he is below her station and before misfortune takes him to the point of destruction. Later in the story Bathsheba hires Gabriel as a farm hand on her property, although the pair is seriously uncomfortable about it (what with him being so proud and handsome and her being so proud, so driven and so beautiful).

The movie features fine performances from Mulligan and Schoenaerts who swoon together beautifully against a gorgeous 1880’s rural backdrop bathed in delicious cinematic lighting.

Bathsheba has two other suitors - an older,

Urban foxes by Nigella The other night just before bedtime, mummy let me out on the grass. It was raining so she stood under the veranda in her dressing gown and slippers while I wandered up the grassy pathway at the side of our house. Mummy was looking at the moon when she saw something move in the bushes. At first she thought it was a cat, then she saw a thick bushy tail. It was a fox and it was looking intently at me. Quick as a flash mummy ran towards me calling out my name in her "urgent" voice. I looked up just in time to see the fox run off, frightened by mummy’s flurry. Next morning when we went walking I could smell that fox. They have an unmistakable smell, pungent and musky. Mummy was exceedingly upset at the thought of a fox grabbing me by the neck and dragging me off to its den because July to September is the time of year when foxes are breeding and have lots of hungry little cubs to feed. Wouldn't I make a tasty catch? Many people in Mawson Lakes report seeing foxes at night and in the early hours of the morning so we decided to do some research. The coordinator of open spaces at Salisbury Council Steve Desmond told us that built-up urban environments are full of foxes and provide rich pickings.

Foxes make their dens in the wetlands, in hollow logs, in back sheds, abandoned cars, anywhere. In South Australia foxes are classified as pests (in the same category as cane toads, dingoes and rabbits) and they are a threat to babies, birds and small pets (chickens, ducks, caged birds, kittens, puppies and little dogs like me!). They are usually rife with fleas, and can also carry worms and a range of diseases and conditions that may be passed on. Foxes are particularly difficult to eradicate because they are fast and smart and too clever to trap. "They move from the wild into the suburbs looking for food and they can scale high fences and dig under the ground to break into cages and they stop at nothing to get to food," said Steve. In urban areas, by law, foxes cannot be shot, baited or poisoned, so even though Council gets lots of complaints there is little they can do. Steve said the best preventative measures are to keep pets inside at night, do not let them wander, and do not leave food out at night for pets or birds. Keep garbage bins secure and clean up everything. "If a fox finds food it will keep returning to the same location," he said. One thing I’ve noticed is that now mummy never takes her eyes off me when I go out last thing at night, even if it means she has to stand shivering in the winter wind and the rain.

Foxes are hunter-scavengers, meaning they are equally happy eating prey that they catch for themselves, or tucking into abandoned and scavenged food from garbage bins.

"Discarded human food, unguarded bins and people deliberately leaving food for ducks and wildlife can all lead to a significant fox population," said Steve.

Dangers on the phone Barry Jenkens from The Bridges had just settled down to dinner when his home phone rang. To his annoyance it was another unsolicited caller trying to sell him something and get his credit card number. No, he didn’t want it and he didn’t appreciate a call after hours. He gets lots of these calls and he is fed up. If you have a landline you are likely to be a target for telemarketers, nuisance callers and scammers because these phone numbers are published. Remember the old phone books, now gone online. Telemarketers are annoying, but scammers are dangerous; they are after your money and your identity. In the first quarter of this year Telstra received more than 4,000 reports of scams. The most common types include callers pretending to be from Telstra and asking for remote access to a home computer to fix a problem that does not exist, or telling customers their home phone will be disconnected if the customer does not pay a fee. Barry told Mawson Lakes Living that he has tried several tactics to rid his phone of unwanted calls including a silent number, plus putting his contacts on the Do Not Call Register. He said the free register is limited as it does not stop international operators. "I get a lot of the callers with a foreign accent," he said. He is now trialling Call Guardian which allows people to filter incoming calls and decide whether to accept or reject them. Ed

8 PROTECTION STRATEGIES • Be wary of anyone claiming to be from a company that requests personal details or upfront payments. • Don't talk to or email someone claiming to be from a government department. Take their name then hang up and call the department back. • Never provide personal details, credit card numbers or account numbers over the phone unless you know and trust the caller. • Never give a random caller access to your computer. • List your number with the Do Not Call Register. • Keep your computer’s antivirus and antispyware up to date. • Call your bank immediately if you think you have provided your account details to a scammer. • If in doubt about a deal tell the caller to send you a letter. You’ll probably never hear from them again.
