Mawson Lakes

Alive

People are beginning to associate Mawson Lakes with quality events. Outstandingly successful happenings such as Dogs Day Out, Matsuri on Mobara and the H R C I S Y T R MA Christmas Carols S MER are generating momentum to stage other popular, crowd-pulling fixtures here. Mawson Lakes certainly has what it takes to become a cultural and festival hub of the North - a beautiful environment with plenty of open space, a sparkling lakeside, easy train/bus access plus cafes and facilities to service the needs of visitors. And, for locals, it’s all within walking distance. How lucky are we! Big community events bring Mawson Lakes ALIVE, inject money into the shops and foster social inclusion and wellbeing. They attract and integrate people from other suburbs and break down the 'northern suburbs stigma’. In an economic impact study commissioned by Festivals Adelaide, it was revealed that Adelaide’s festivals deliver around $62 million to the South Australian economy each year.

Wow, festivals are big business. How can we capitalise on this in Mawson Lakes? As Chairman of the Mawson Lakes Chamber of Commerce, I am urging Council to run more events along the lines of Matsuri on Mobara. Maybe we could have a Chinese Lantern Festival on the Lake, a Vietnamese Day or an Italian Taster. How about a Rock’n’Roll Concert or a summer evening on the green with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra playing popular classics. Matsuri is a Council event, but Dogs Day Out and Christmas Carols are run by residents. All are sponsored by MLL in the spirit of community support. If you have enthusiasm for such events, or other ideas, contact our Council representatives Brad Vermeer or Steve White or Major Gillian Aldridge (see their numbers below). Our Christmas Gift Guide last issue was so popular that we are running a new selection of gifts this issue. Do your shopping locally and support local businesses. And look out for some silly gags throughout this issue for the silly season. Have a good holiday. MLL will be back in January with ideas to help you achieve your New Year's Resolutions.

New format for MLL a winner Wanting to congratulate you on the new format for Mawson Lakes Living. It continues to provide all of the interest we have come to expect, but with a fabulous new layout and approach, especially to our Garden Club page - Sue Reid Mawson Lakes Garden Club Black Fingers I detest reading newspapers because I end up with black newsprint on my fingers and dirty streaks on my clothes, but when I read MLL it has a soft, clean feel and there is no print rub off. The photos are just great, particularly the stunning one last month of The Bridges. Thanks for giving us a quality local mag that we can be proud of. I show it around all over the place and people marvel at it. - Luke Trowler, The Bridges Cycling and the law Bicycles on footpaths are dangerous and ILLEGAL. Each morning as I walk the footpath along Elder Smith Drive I have to dodge bicycle riders travelling at high speed, particularly on the downhill run. This is a busy footpath full of school-bound kids, mums with strollers, commuters to the train station and pedestrians out for a walk. It is no place for cyclists. I went to the police station to get a copy of the road rules for cyclists and found it is illegal for cyclists to ride on footpaths and a fine of more than $100 is applicable. I have reported this problem to police and henceforth will keep a log and photographs. - Resident, The Sanctuary

Matsuri on Mobara Congratulations to everyone on a fabulous event. The weather was so lovely that many people found the Brella Painting a perfect thing to do on the grass in the sunshine. I was so busy all day there was not enough time to paint a Brella for you Linda to go with your beautiful kimono. See if I can arrange that for next year. I will bring lots of purple paint! - Tricia Stedman, Arty Brellas Feeding birds If we shouldn’t feed bread to the ducks (MLL/Nov) what can we feed them? - Pat Gebbutt Ed: There are healthier alternatives. (See MLL/68 online). Feed only small amounts of grated vegetables and fruits, leafy greens such as lettuce, cracked corn, oats and other grain and soft defrosted peas. Also get the kids to dig up worms, collect snails and earwigs from the garden and feed them to ducks as natural sources of protein and calcium. Make sure you have not used chemicals lately if you are taking things from the soil. Silly Rego Plates Funny and clever car registration plates always catch my eye. Festivals like this one attract a lot of attention and bring huge crowds and big spending into a community. We need more outdoor annual festivals and fairs at Mawson Lakes. We have the perfect environment. We have a couple of successful outdoor events but we need more to bring fun and vitality to the streets and to the shops here. 4

Finance with Joe Vacura Cut the credit: Breaking up with debt!

The team at AAA Mortgage Solutions wish all our clients and readers of Mawson Lakes Living a happy holiday season and a new year of health happiness and prosperity

As many of us know, it’s all too easy to get into credit card debt. A holiday here, a Christmas shopping binge there, an emergency trip to the mechanic to keep you on the road. Small debts add up to big interest repayments when not pa repaid swiftly: Here are some basic ideas to help you chip away at that lump sum.

4.74% 4.98%

Get Motivated pa In the short term you’ll need real motivation to make the lifestyle changes necessary to pay off your debt. It’s easy to ignore your monthly credit card statements as they build up – but it’s financially damaging in the long run. Use Strategy Not all credit cards are equal – some charge higher interest rates than others and have annual fees. If you have multiple credit card debts, consult with your broker to identify which card to pay down immediately and think about transferring your debt onto a credit card offering lower rates. Other options include negotiating repayment terms with your financial institution, consolidating your debt into a personal loan or incorporating your debt onto your mortgage. Pay Your Cards Off The time is now! Cut up that card, knuckle down and pay off your credit cards! It’s as simple (and difficult) as that. Keep your eyes on the prize: before too long you’ll be debt free and able to use your loan potential and ready cash for property investment, saving or improving your lifestyle as you see fit.

Tree Down It’s always sad to see a big old gum tree die and come down. That’s what happened to the Red Gum that shaded the sandstone circular wall at the Peninsular Walk (pictured below). The tree on the corner of The Walk and Parkview Drive was estimated to be 80-100 years, but it was full of borers and it had been dying for several years. Its dead branches were hanging dangerously over the path beneath it. Council removed the tree last month. Mark Purdie, Manager of Parks and Landscape at the City of Salisbury, said that Council had been keeping a regular check on the tree. He writes: "Our tree services section believe the decline in the tree's health is probably attributable to impacts from development. It is not uncommon for tree damage (to roots etc.) to occur during landscaping/ development and for the full effects of that damage not to be realised for many years into the future. There is very little we can do in these situations." The tree was full of borers and Mark explains: "Longicorn Beetle is the main borer that attacks the eucalypts in Salisbury. This beetle is species specific so it will not attack any other species of tree. Trees that are under stress are more prone to being attacked. Trees will often outgrow a borer attack, however greatly stressed trees may be killed. There is no available treatment for the control of the Longicorn Beetle. Council received calls from local residents about the tree and Mark concludes, "It is pleasing to see such concern for trees in the community as we in the parks team share in the disappointment of the loss of mature trees such as this one from the landscape.” - Ed

by Minnie Wilson If you are looking for an Australian Native Christmas Tree, look for an Albany Woolly Bush, (Adenanthos Sericea). These plants grow well around Mawson Lakes and you'll spot them in many front gardens. The grey green leaves give the bush a colour that almost hints at being snow covered and because of its size, the Woolly Bush is a decent sized Christmas tree. The dwarf Woolly Bush is an attractive medium shrub with soft silver/ green woolly foliage and produces dainty pale red flowers in spring. It grows best in full sun with good airflow and well drained soils. Once established this plant will tolerate dry periods. The plant requires little maintenance as its textural compact habit naturally forms a good shape, thus requiring little or no pruning. It is best to initially feed with a slow release low phosphorous fertiliser to help establish the plant. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and suppress weeds. The dwarf Woolly Bush is an excellent plant for creating contrasting textures within the landscape. It can be used as a feature plant or for border planting in formal and informal gardens.

Interiors with Janneke Less bling/more heart Christmas has traditionally been an important time in the life of many families. Recently, this time of year has become just another commercial opportunity and decorating your home is no exception. The array of ready-made decorations, tinsel and glitter is dazzling but are we losing sight of the real reason we deck the halls? Decorating your home for the holidays doesn't have to be consumer-oriented; it can be a great opportunity, especially for the children in our lives to get crafty and generate wonderful memories. Here are some suggestions that will get you thinking about alternative decorating ideas this Christmas: •

Home made, hand made or just made with love. You don't have to be Martha Stewart to sprinkle pine cones with glitter or string together paper chains. Go on a scavenger hunt and collect interesting treasures from outdoors to create a pretty centrepiece or wreath. Check out page 24 for instructions on how to make salt dough decorations.

There are plenty of fun alternatives to the 'traditional' plastic tree. Sometimes a real tree is not an option, but a spray painted (naturally shed) branch can make a real feature. Or adopt a tree in your yard or neighbourhood. Decorate it with things birds like to eat such as peanut butter filled pinecones. (and a little bit of tinsel won't hurt!)

Be sure to keep all of the special bits the kids bring home from school and make a point of buying unique pieces whilst on holiday. An eclectic collection of special decorations can be added to each year and every one of them will bring back a memory as you hang them on your tree (or your spray painted branch!) Janneke is a graphic designer and interior architecture graduate who believes we should all find our own style.

FOR THE SILLY SEASON

Lucky at Bingo Bob goes to the doctor feeling ill. The doctor checks him over and says, “Sorry Bob but I have some bad news, you have Blue 16, a deadly disease that turns your blood blue and usually kills you in about 16 weeks. There’s no known cure so just go home and do all the things you ever wanted to do but never got around to." So Bob goes home and tells his wife. “Well," she says, "let’s go to the RSL Club and have a drink and a game of bingo to cheer you up as you’ve never played bingo before." So they arrive at bingo, and with his first card Bob gets four corners and wins $45. Then, with the same card he gets a line and wins $350. Then he gets the full house and wins $5000. Then the national game comes up and he wins that too, getting $30,000. The bingo caller brings him up on stage and says, "I’ve been here for 20 years and I’ve never seen anyone win four corners, a line, the full house and the national game on the same card. You must be the luckiest person on earth!” “Lucky?" screams Bob, “Lucky?” I’ll have you know I have Blue 16.”

Young Entrepreneur Breaking computer addiction A young resident in Mawson Lakes is encouraging people to turn off their computers and get into board games. In November he launched his popup board function called The Big Game Theory at the Denison Centre. Cameron Benham (14) has started the venture with the help of his family. More than 200 games are available to choose from including classic board games such as Monopoly, Uno and Mousetrap; to classic word games such as Scrabble; to everpopular games along the Dungeons and Dragons theme. And if you’ve played all these games before and want a bigger challenge, go to the new bestselling European board games such as Settlers of Catan or King of Tokyo. There’s something for every ability level and interest. Board games involve pieces that are moved on a pre-marked board according to a set of rules. At the Big Game Theory you take a table, select a game and learn the rules. On the night I attended there was not a computer in sight and the room was packed with players of all ages generating a happy, noisy vibe. Cameron has set up the Big Game Theory in a professional way with a sponsor (The Game Station). He has a designed a creative business card and a website and his father is supporting the venture by providing business and marketing advice and helping set up the game equipment and ensure there is strong adult supervision.

Board games for all ages: Cameron Benham (left) from Big Game Theory with the Watters Family who say that board games are great family fun.

"There are not many things for kids to do in the evenings that are safe and local so I’m hoping this venture will appeal to groups and families for a night's outing,” said Mr Benham. People can play as singles or in groups up to 12 people. Staff will get you started and explain the rules and show you how to play different games. Cameron said that games involve much more than chance. ”Different games demand strategy, role playing, acting, bluffing, skill and memory.” The monthly Saturday evenings run from 5.30 to 11.30pm. Admission is $5 per person. Ed The next night is on 13 December at the Denison Centre. Invite your friends or family, and book a table, or go alone and meet new people. Call Cameron on 0427 228 830. And every year the emergency phone rings throughout Christmas day and the public holidays as folks troll through the Yellow Pages, sifting through trying to find an open dentist to stop their pain or fix their broken tooth! There is much to be said for a comprehensive check-up prior to the Christmas season, when Christmas closures and long waiting times start to choke the ability to get a check-up. Remember that most health insurances dental extras cover renew their claiming limits on January 1st, so there is much to be said for using this year’s claiming limit before it simply expires, unused.

Kids Corner with Kirra and Sharna Salt Dough Decorations Salt Dough is often used to create crafts, sculptures and ornaments. It can easily be made at home using 3 basic ingredients so it is a perfect activity for the kids. Salt dough Ingredients 1 cup table salt 2 cups plain flour 3/4 cup of water

(plus paint, glitter and ribbon to decorate)

Instructions In a large bowl, mix salt and flour together. Gradually stir in the water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency. Turn onto the bench and kneed until smooth and combined (add a sprinkle of flour if too wet or a few drops of water if dry.) Make your creations! Roll the dough out to 7mm thick before cutting shapes with cookie cutters and making holes with a plastic drinking straw. For tree decorations, place the hole at the top, for the christmas tree centrepiece pictured above, cut your holes through the centre of star or flower shapes in various sizes. Place the decorations into a cool oven, approx 1000C for an hour or until firm and dry. Paint and decorate with glitter before tying a ribbon through the hole. For the tree, stack your shapes onto a wooden skewer, trim the skewer and top teh tree with a star.

Delish Recipes by Annette Shotton Pistachio & White Chocolate Strudel I made this Pistachio & White Chocolate Strudel at Christmas and it was a hit! It's easy to whip up and there are very few ingredients needed and only a few steps. Cheek Kiss xx

Ingredients

100g White Cooking Chocolate 80g shelled pistachios 250g fresh ricotta finely grated rind of 1 orange 2 tbs honey 2 egg yolks 1 tbs plain flour 4 sheets filo pastry 40g butter, melted 1 tbs icing sugar

Method

Preheat oven to 220째C. Break chocolate into pieces and process in a food processor with pistachios until finely chopped. Add ricotta, orange rind, honey, egg yolks and flour and process until blended. Line a baking tray. Brush each sheet of pastry with butter and layer on top of each other. Pile the filling along the short side 5cm in from the each edge. Roll up halfway, fold in sides and complete rolling to the end but not too tightly. Transfer to prepared tray and brush with butter. Make 4 small knife incisions in the top to allow the steam to escape. Bake for 20 minutes until golden and crisp. Cool, dust with icing sugar and cut into slices. Serve with ice-cream or fresh cream or both!

Dining review On the Plate with Ali Hellewell

PACEWAY RESTAURANT Globe Derby Park At the home of harness racing you can enjoy a great family night out watching the races and stuff yourself silly at the Saturday night Buffet, upstairs in the Paceway Restaurant. Overlooking the track with the Hills as the backdrop, this is where I was headed. With entrées including soup, cold meat platter, jumbo prawns, Asian finger foods and bruschetta it really was hard to choose. I settled on the pumpkin soup and delighted in its sweet and nutty creaminess. But then of course I just had to sample a little bit of everything else, because, after all, isn’t that what a smorgasboard is all about? (wink).

The main course dishes were good quality, with an equally impressive selection. Succulent roast meats, panko crumbed prawns, salt and pepper calamari, chicken satays and grilled fish, just to name a few. Add in a variety of salads and vegetable dishes, and you have a very satisfying feast, sure to please every palate. This is a very kid friendly place. Then just when you think you can’t fit in another morsel, bring on dessert. Mini cakes, pavlovas, profiteroles, cheesecake, trifle, fresh fruits, cheeseboard and of course all the fixings for an icecream sundae. With tea and coffee on tap too, I literally rolled myself back to my car at the end of it all. Great value as the price also includes gate entry. The summer racing carnival is nearly here, so this is a great night out for the whole family. Go on, give it a go! Ali Hellewell is a chef who lives in Mawson Lakes. Learning Japanese

by Nigella

A busy social life has kept me busy this month, including a Japanese Festival and a Christmas Market. Mummy bought me a new fold up chair so I could sit in comfort all day at the MLL stall and talk to passersby (see picture opposite). The chair even has a holder for my water. I always like it when people stop to chat with me at the MLL stall. In return I like to give them little kisses. My job is PR. An interesting breed of dog that I’ve never seen before came by at Matsuri on Mobara. Five Japanese Shiba Inu were out for the day, enjoying everything Japanese. What a handsome, small, agile dog they are, originally bred for hunting. They come in beautiful colours and are double coated with a stiff straight outer coat and a soft, thick undercoat so they can tolerate the cold of the Japanese mountains. The Japanese Breed Standard describes them as: a dog with a spirited boldness, a good nature, and an unaffected forthrightness, which together yield dignity and natural beauty. The Shiba has an independent nature and can be reserved toward strangers but is loyal and affectionate to those who earn his respect. They can be aggressive toward other dogs. Well not to me. They were very sociable and friendly, especially when their owners were rewarding them with treats if they smiled for the camera. I was quick to get in on this act, and I gobbled up lots of dried turkey titbits. Yummy. Just look at us all smiling in the photograph. I learnt two new Japanese words this day - matsuri which means festival and inu which means dog. You can find the word INU in the puzzle on this page - along with 23 other words that mean DOG in different languages.

Merry Christmas, Nigella 28

Pet Care with Dr Brendan “Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat…” It may be OK (indeed desirable) for the goose to get fat for Christmas, but for our pets obesity is (literally) a growing problem. Recent studies have shown that around 33% of Australian dogs are overweight, and a further 8% are clinically obese. Great Christmas Idea

Shortened life expectancy, arthritis, heart and respiratory problems, diabetes, cancer and pancreatitis are all associated with increased weight.

Around 5% of overweight dogs have a predisposing medical condition; the rest have overeaten to attain their extra body weight. As such, calorie restriction is the standard remedy, but this can prove challenging in some cases.

Legal Eagle’s Perch with Bill Morris The Child Sex Offender Register is now partly available on-line Parents of young children have to face the grim reality of being alert to the risk of child sex offenders having contact with their children. Convicted child sex offenders are legally obliged to regularly report certain information about themselves, including where they are living, to the police. The police keep this information in a register but previously that information was not available to the public – so you had no way of knowing if a paedophile lived near you. This law has changed, but just a little. If a known paedophile has not reported regularly to the police as required or has gone missing, the police now have legal authority to publish that person’s details to the public at large. You can go to the police web page and check out the full name, a photo, date of birth and last known location of child sexual offenders who have not reported to the police as required. A WARNING: you can look at the information on the web page but you cannot pass the information on. You commit a very serious offence involving up to 5 years imprisonment if you send the information you have viewed to someone else – others can go to the webpage and look at it themselves if they want. So, in effect the police web page has a ‘wanted’ list of child sex offenders that you can check for yourself to be sure that such a person is not living near you.

DVD Review

The LAST SONG A heart-warming story about fractured families, first love, second changes and coming of age from the author of 'Dear John' and 'The Notebook’. The movie follows Ronnie and her estranged father, a music professor, as he tries to restore the loving relationship he had with his daughter before he and his wife divorced. But reconnecting with his rebellious daughter isn’t easy, so he chooses the one thing they still have in common - music. Ronnie was once a classical piano prodigy under the tutelage of her father but now she ignores the instrument as part of her rebellion.

When she is sent to her father’s house for the summer, with her younger brother, she must overcome her defiance and defensiveness towards all those around her. When handsome Will enters her life things start to change and truths are revealed. Gently he brings her round and a new bond is formed. The movie is set in a Southern US beach town and makes an easy-watching film for the holiday months, suitable for the whole family. The Last Song is available from the Mawson Lakes Library. Ed

Teaching Children

Persistence

The ability to persist at a task and see it through to the end is one of the most important skills that you can teach a child. Children need to be able to persist when work gets hard or life gets tough. When things don’t go their way they need ‘stickability’ and this is a learned response. Parents who allow children to stop when the going gets tough, avoid the consequences, stay home from school for a minor reason or give up on a sport or task because they are not succeeding straight away are not doing their children any favours. Parents can promote persistence by encouraging their children to keep going. Adults who sit down and talk through an issue with their child, make a list of all the problems to be overcome, plan ways to deal with problems and how to manage time, develop a solutions-based attitude in their child. An edited version of an article by Karen Kesby, Pastoral Care Coordinator at Endeavour College.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. - Calvin Coolidge

FOR THE SILLY SEASON

Bather’s Guide - The Invisible Line With the coming of the swimming season out come the bathers. Here’s a meaningless misguidance as to where and when to wear your swimming togs. If you’re reading this sitting in a suburban cafe wearing nothing but a bikini, chances are you’ve cross it. “It" being the invisible line where bathers becomes underpants. Some people think the line ends where the sand does. Others are a bit more lax with the rules and think it’s ok, as long as you can still see the water. I, on the other hand, prefer to use a sliding scale to determine how far you can travel from the beach in your bathers before it becomes, well, wrong. For example, if you’re a hairy middle-aged gorilla wearing beige budgie smugglers, the line is your towel and not a foot further - no strolls, no chatting by the shore and preferably no swimming inside the flags. On the other hand if you’re Jude Law or Elle the line is more of an arc. By all means, Jude and Elle look-alikes, take a walk on the sunny side of the water, go for coffee and leave your towel on the sand, even catch the bus home fresh from the beach. Indeed why not turn the invisible line into invisible bathers. With a body like that, who needs bathers anyway? From Like i give a frock by Michi Girl

The club held its Annual Regatta in October. Twenty yachts participated and competed for honours. Calm waters greeted the early races but by the afternoon the weather had completely changed to rough and windy. This gave competitors who sail well in difficult conditions the opportunity to score points, so at the end of the 10 races the scoring was close.

"We stress to people that we are a mixed social club, and welcome all classes of boats, said PR Officer Geoff Fox. "Our competitions are friendly and we do not award prizes, but we work on a point score system, and at the end of the year we add up the points."
