It’s summer and the livin' is easy here in Mawson Lakes as you'll see from our photo spread on pages 20-21. This issue has a playful, summery feel with pictures and puzzles and a few light-hearted articles, poems and quips.

There aren’t any places for silly old laces but a thing that holds on to your toe.

The owners of a new business on Metro Parade called Devine Spine invited me to try a Floatation at their salon last week. With such a catchy business name how could I possibly resist! Divine it was, so was Andrew's spinopractic massage that followed. What's a Floatation? Well, to find out you'll have to come along to Devine Spine's official opening this month. Your invitation is opposite.

You’re flapping and tapping with feet overlapping and people who watch will agree that the song of a thong when you’re flopping along is of feet that are born to be FREE.

One of my favourite things in summer is walking along the beach with Nigella on a warm afternoon. I put on my bathers and thongs and together we clock up thousands of steps on the Fitbit. Whenever I wear my thongs (called flip flops if you come from America or UK) I'm reminded of a short, summery, thin, thong song we used to recite at school. What NOT to give on Valentine's Day They say it's the thought that counts, but don't heed this simple advice on Valentine's Day. Words are not enough on this special day - a gift is the token of affection. But to win your honey's heart, a gift requires some careful thought. No matter what stage your relationship is at, you should think twice before picking any of these 10 not-so-sweet gifts for Valentine's Day. 1 Lay off the lingerie Being off sizewise can be the kiss of death. Many would.

A very un-merry Christmas Your story about gift cards in MLL/Jan (Hurry, spend that gift) was timely, but unfortunately I ignored its warning. I am a victim of the Dick Smith downfall. For Christmas I bought gift cards from Dick Smith - a big TV screen for my son, a washing machine for my daughter and a variety of electronic things for the grandkids. They had not had time to claim their gifts before the announcement in the first week of January that the electronics company had gone into administration and that gift vouchers would not be honoured. What a horror story. My ethical dilemma is: do I go out and buy the same gifts somewhere else (thousands of dollars worth) or do I say to the family "bad luck"? - Ian Rojalle Pricing post out of business Many of us fought long and hard to get a post office at Mawson Lakes but Australia Post is on a downhill slope so it will not happen. Australia Post has this amazing strategy for a declining business. Their solution is to increase the price of regular postage and reduce their service so that it could take 5 business days for local delivery. Add to this the rude proposition of charging a premium for next-day-delivery. Some businesses are now charging their clients extra if they want correspondence such as an invoice. sent by mail. The reputation of a once grand national business is in shreds. - Ginny Kym, Shoalhaven Harming the birdlife It's pleasing to see that Salisbury Council is considering putting up signs in Mawson Lakes to instruct people about the dangerous effects on native birds of eating bread. Everywhere I walk in ML I see bread littering the ground. Some people scatter whole loaves, while others throw hot chips and cakes without realising that this sort of food can cause deformities, even death in birds. Native birds should forage for their own food, not eat human food. But why is Council only considering putting up signs at The Bridges? We need them around ALL the lakes. - Rod, Shearwater Lake

Waiting for Daddy to come home Thank you for the lovely Mawson Lakes Living Calendar. I have two daughters (2 and 5) and we have used the calendar to mark off the days until Daddy returns from the Middle East where he is serving in the Air Force. He comes home in April and every day we look at the calendar and count off the days. - Amanda and girls Hats for High School The Cancer Council is campaigning for Aussie kids at high school to wear hats when outdoors in Terms 1, 3 and 4. What a sensible idea. My kids went to Mawson Lakes School in their primary years where there was an enforced hat policy of "no hat, no play". They grew up wearing hats as part of their school uniform so they will transition to this sensible rule with ease. - Helen Peters

"Bed and Breakfast... with local honey"

Post office needed In this day and age of online shopping a local post office would make life easier for residents of Mawson Lakes to collect parcels. At the moment when a parcel is delivered and no one is home to receive it (or in the case of an apartment building that the deliverer cannot access) a collection card is left for the receiver to collect from Pooraka, Ingle Farm or even Salisbury North Post Office. This is not at all convenient for working people. Surely the growth of this suburb warrants such a service. - E Lachoulis Enough to make you cross Just a week or so after Christmas, I saw hot cross buns on the Woolies shelves. Our traditional celebrations have been hijacked by the supermarkets as a cash-grab. Sadly it seems that people have forgotten the historical significance of the events for which we have public holidays and only respond to the commercial glitz and Food, Food, Food. Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten at the end of Lent and are marked with a cross to represent the crucifixion of Jesus. - Richard Cundy

Model Yacht Club Awards Congratulations to members of the Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club who received the following trophies at the Annual Awards Dinner - the Regatta Cup was awarded to Dean Bonnet for top points for the weekly racing competitions. The Leske Award went to Gary Polomka for the greatest contribution to the club both on and off the water. The Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup was presented to John Dotkerill for his continuous supportive efforts during 2015. Finally I wish to commend Mawson Lakes Living on a splendid calendar for 2016, for its superb artwork and very professional layout. - Geoff Fox, Model Yacht Club Bicycles and broken bones Walking along Dry Creek, that stretch between the school and the train station, my little boy was hit by a fast-peddling bicycle. My son was running towards me obscured by some bushes and I did not see a bike come up behind us. The cyclist did not even stop to check for damage, but sped away towards the station, and there was no way I could identify him. All I can do is write to the government who is considering reversing the "bicycles on footpaths" law following public outcry. My recommendations are: 1.

Bicycles be registered and display a numberplate. 2. If bicycles are allowed on footpaths they only move at the speed of a brisk walk. 3. Local councils be authorised to fine speeding cyclists on the spot. Residents are very concerned that the walking tracks in Mawson Lakes are being used as speed lanes by bicycle riders and it is becoming unsafe to walk. My son suffered a broken arm. - Concerned Resident

OPINION - Adjusting your speech In an age when the full stop, once an essential part of grammar, is now considered a hinderance, I write to commend Mawson Lakes Living on its use of language - clear and concise, usually correct and with a sprinkle of humour. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy the magazine so much each month. I know that language is in a constant state of flux and we must move with the times but some of the changes worry me… and some amuse me.

A US study claims that text messages that end with full stops are seen as insincere, and, instead, the author suggests skipping punctuation altogether, as a lack of punctuation indicates your reply is "spontaneous". But punctuation is one of the cues used by senders, and understood by receivers worldwide. They help us make sense of the written word, be it on paper or online. A full-stop is a terminal point; the end of a thought. How will we cope without it?

But I am reserving my strength to endure the latest in grammatical trendiness - the conversion of nouns to verbs. The trend is found in all areas of life. Sports commentators tell us that winners have been "medalled". Names of equipment have morphed in activities. Take "rollerblade", "skateboard" and "snowboard". Football referees used to book players, or send them off: now they "card" them. Racing drivers "pit"; golfers "par"; and coastal divers "tombstone".

"bookmark" websites; "inbox" our e-mail contacts and "friend" our acquaintances on Facebook — only, in some cases, to "defriend" them later.

Our rapid-turn-around political climate opens up a whole new vocabulary. How about "Australia has been re-Prime Ministered". Politics has come up with "to handbag" (a tribute to Lady Thatcher) and "to doughnut"—that is, to sit in a ring around a colleague making a parliamentary announcement, so that it is not clear to television viewers that the chamber is practically deserted.

On the other hand, verbing can be entertaining — you may be rushing "to boilerplate" (automatically include) material in a document, or "to demagogue" a political subject (discuss it in a rabble-rousing manner), or maybe you are tired of "shouldering the blame".

New technology is fertile ground, partly because it is constantly seeking names for things which did not previously exist: we "text" from our mobiles;

Sometimes verbs are minted from nouns which were formed from verbs in the first place. To say "Let’s conference" instead of "Let’s confer", or "I’ll signature it" instead of "I’ll sign it", or "They statemented" instead of "they stated". Who comes up with these mangled forms of the language?

Not every coinage passes into general use, but as for trying to end verbing altogether, forget it. If they stick around for long enough we just get used to them and "action" them into our speech. - Gregory Kingston

Knowledge Plus awarded $33,000: I recently met with Ly Lim and students of Knowledge Plus at Mawson Lakes. Knowledge Plus was awarded $33,000 under the Fund My Idea Northern Suburbs program for a proposal to engage with around 25 disadvantaged young people and provide them with the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills by immersing them in real life learning experiences in order to help them gain employment. Mawson Lakes Golf Club receive funds for irrigation: Mawson Lakes Golf Club received $8,781 through the Active Club Program to assist with an irrigation upgrade. I met with President Peter Thomson and Secretary / Manager Brett Strickland to present them with the certificate. I have also written to UniSA to ask it to investigate bitumenising the car park and access road, which is used by the club, other local sports groups and Endeavour College.

People Profile A new life in Australia has meant big changes for Farad Rahmanian and his family who came from Iran to Mawson Lakes 10 months ago. "We love it here; it's so peaceful and spacious," said Farad who shares an apartment in Mawson Lakes with his wife and son Arman (12).

"School here is more fun and it’s much bigger with lots of things to do. I have also joined the Mawson Rowing Club and I like being on the water and making new friends."

Farad who speaks English well and has a university degree in chemical engineering was sponsored by the government on a skilled nominated visa. He has a job but he said that finding work within his profession is not easy. His wife, who used to be a maths teacher in Iran, is studying English at TAFE. So it comes as no surprise that his son Arman is a top achiever in maths at school.

DVD Review - Captain Phillips Based on a real life hijacking incident that garnered worldwide attention, Captain Phillips tells the tale of two strangers from opposite corners of the earth who are brought together by circumstance and fate. Richard Phillips (a fine performance by Tom Hanks) is the Captain of an unarmed cargo ship sailing international waters off the coast of Africa en route to Mombasa. A band of Somali pirates (all very convincingly scary first-time actors) led by Abduwali Muse are determined to board the ship and hold its captain and crew hostage for ransom. Captain Phillips is directed by Paul Greengrass of Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum fame. Not surprisingly therefore, the tension and urgency are very real. It is both exhausting and exhilirating. I had a bit of trouble with some motion sickness as I often do with movies filmed at sea or with hand-held cameras but it moved along at breakneck speed with plenty of nail-biting thrills to distract from the shaky camera. Compelling.

How to fight fair Wherever there are people, disputes will exit, but fighting can be frightening and damaging whether it’s with your child, your spouse or your workmates. When family therapist Dr Lee Gippsland talked to a group of parents in Mawson Lakes he outlined some rules of engagement to constructively manage conflict. He said that conflict stems from the emotions, so try to get the feelings behind the issue on the table. This involves listening. Try really hard not to interrupt or talk over the top of the other person. Encourage them to get it all out so you know the extent of the grievance. When you think you have it all, pause and ask, "is there anything else worrying you?" A key rule to conflict management is no name calling. Words are powerful swords and once spoken cannot be taken back so be careful what you say. Stick to the issue and avoid personal, hurtful attacks. Reframe from using sarcasm and resorting to smart remarks as this will inflame. Don’t make threats or give ultimatums, don’t yell and scream and don’t physically intimidate. Sitting down across a table is a good way to begin a difficult conversation.

Try not to bring up previous grievances and refrain from blame. Express your own feelings as they apply to you, rather than as an attack, for example, instead of saying, "You make a fool of yourself when you..." turn it around and say "I feel embarrassed when you…" If things get too heated and you feel you are losing it, go get a drink and suggest you talk again later. Dr Gippsland said he likes to go for a long walk and weigh up things as he strides along because physical activity can help ease emotional turmoil. Come back to the discussion when you are not tired and you have had a chance to think of the long-term consequences of your words and actions. Is this what you really want? "Being able to communicate feelings in a calm manner is an essential life skill, so think before you speak. Be prepared to give a little or apologise if you have been too hard or unfair," said Dr Gippsland. His final suggestion was to seek professional counselling if you are not managing conflict well and the issues are not being resolved through discussion. Ed

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards Holiday Footwear If you are heading away on holidays this year, remember to consider your footwear carefully. Your shoe choices can be the difference between hours of comfortable walking, and worlds of pain. A forgotten toothbrush can easily be replaced but poor footwear choices are harder to resolve. Footwear shouldn't be a last minute decision. I have met many people whose holiday plans have been crushed by foot pain and blisters. With a little planning this can be avoided. It is important to consider your destination, the weather and holiday itinerary. If you are going to Europe or the United States chances are you will be doing a lot of walking, usually more than you anticipate. This type of trip requires comfortable supportive footwear. A walking or sports shoe is ideal. It is also preferable to wear-in shoes prior to your trip to ensure comfort. If a beach holiday is more your style an enclosed shoe is not a priority. The most walking you may have planned is to the beach and around the pool. In this case a non slip supportive sandal or thongs would be ideal to protect your feet from hot surfaces and provide foot comfort on your short walks. It is also a good idea to address any foot issues prior to your departure to ensure a comfortable trip. Have your feet assessed in advance to allow time to resolve issues before you go away. Corns, callus, ingrowing nails and heel cracks can be treated ahead of time to make sure your feet are as ready for your holiday as you are. Hibiscus - at their best in February Loved for the beauty of their flowers that only last a day, hibiscus thrive in a hot climate as long as they get plenty to drink in summer and their roots live in moist, humus-enriched, well-drained soil. Plants need at least 6 hours of sunshine to flower profusely throughout summer. They hate to dry out. Hibiscus look lovely as a stand-alone feature or as a hedge if they are trimmed to the same level. They can also be grown at the back of a flower bed. Apply a liquid fertiliser in late winter or early spring to encourage the summer flush of flowers and reapply it every month during summer. Hibiscus are heavy feeders and a handful of rose or citrus food is good for them but be careful to water well before and after application. Prune in late September or October. Mulch around the base of the trunk, leaving a small empty tyre for air circulation and to prevent disease. Cut back on the water and fertiliser in the cooler months. Ed

The Farmer’s Lament - Farmers have it tough but some things really irk them: Metric conversion has ruined me financially. When they changed to dollars my overdraft doubled overnight. Then when I was struggling against this burden, they changed from acres to hectares, and my farm was only half the size it was! Then pounds were replaced with kilograms. And now I get only half the wool clip I used to. On top of all this they brought in daylight saving. At my age the days became so long I decided to sell. Wouldn’t you know it. They changed miles to kilometres. And now I’m so far out of town I can’t sell the blooming place!

Chalk Art in Mawson Lakes by Nigella I’ve sometimes walked on colourful footpaths that are covered in a chalky layer with a funny smell. The paths left my paws covered in fine powder and as I licked it off I wondered what it was . Now I know. It’s sidewalk chalk and its all part of Chalk Art which is a roaring worldwide craze. Over the Christmas season it came to Mawson Lakes - to a house right next door to me. Christmas in our street is always an engaging event. We decorate our houses with dazzling lights, play happy music, and the neighbours sit outside and talk to each other and to the passersby way into the night. It’s my favourite time of year because everything sparkles, all the children come out to gasp at the lights and lots of people stop to talk to me. Everybody in our street does something different and this year the children next door drew colourful scribbles on their driveway with chalk; things like rainbows and a hopscotch. They left the chalk bucket on the step so others could decorate the street too. So when some of my young friends came to visit they grabbed some chalk and drew a message on my driveway. What a thrill.

Anyway mummy and I took to the internet to learn more about chalk art. We discovered some amazing 3D stuff particularly on the streets of America and Italy where they hold chalk art festivals and invite top artists. Mummy thinks it's messy and too 'ephemeral' (that's one of her big words, you might have to look it up). It just all washes away in the rain.
