When talking to me about the community magazine, people often comment on how much they value the regular columns covering topics from health care to legal matters to financial affairs. This sharing of advice is called 'content marketing'. If you have useful and current information from your professional field and you would like to write a regular column, give me a call. Joe Vancura who writes a regular column in MLL on financial matters told me that 2 to 3 people come into his office every week as a direct response to his columns (see page 21).

Coming up this month is Australia Day. This is celebrated annually on 26 January. It marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships in Australia and the raising of the flag of Great Britain.

Dry Creek Underpass As a resident at The Cascades, I find it completely strange the decision not to upgrade the underpass under Dry Creek near the Mawson Lakes Railway Station (Council Report MLL/Nov). Barely 300m away, Elder Drive in Shoalhaven travels over Dry Creek and there is a walking trail underneath the road. If you travel another 300m further up Dry Creek you come across Salisbury Highway, and, yes, there is a walking trail beneath the road. Then, another 700-800 metres up Dry Creek there is the Port Wakefield Road. Here you will find a newly constructed underpass. The network of walking trails throughout Mawson Lakes is fantastic but Council's decision not to open up the underpass linking Mawson Lakes Central with Shoalhaven is a step backwards for the walking/running community and a continuing HUGE inconvenience for the residents of Shoalhaven to gain access to Mawson Lakes Central. - Peter Reimann Parking warning We have fallen foul of the parking rules in the carpark outside Target. My wife was flabbergasted to receive a parking fine for $88 after spending less than 30 minutes in Target. What she failed to realise was that the sign does not mean 2 hours at a time but 2 hours in a 24 hour period! She had been to the chocolate shop earlier in the day to catch up with a friend and take a walk around the lake with our dogs. She then returned later in the day to do some more shopping, only to be fined. We spend hundreds of dollars each week in the shops that front the lake, some days coming down 3 times a day to have coffee, eat lunch and do business locally. Parking Problems I live in Coventry Street and I have parked in front of my house since I moved into Mawson Lakes in 2013. Today I found a parking infringement warning from Salisbury Council on my car for parking within 10 metres of an intersection. I want to obey the law but parking is becoming a real problem as multiple apartment blocks go up and parking spaces are inadequate for the number of people living in the area. Hair by Marcela Marcela Lastra from Mawson Lakes has been named the South Australian Ambassador for Hair Aid, an organisation that provides hair cutting skills to people in the Philippines so they can earn a livelihood. Foodland coming to Mawson Lakes Mawson Lakes will get another supermarket this year when Foodland opens a new store in the commercial area in a fit-for-purpose building. CEO of Foodland Supermarkets Con Sciacca told Mawson Lakes Living that the chain is expanding across South Australia and Mawson Lakes has been identified as a rapidly growing suburb in the north with a discerning and cashed-up customer base. The expansion comes as Aldi is set to enter South Australia with the first stores to open in February, but Mr Sciacca said that Foodland was not threatened by Aldi, saying the real competitors are Woolies and Coles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We see Aldi as a drawcard for bargain shoppers but it lacks the product range and service required by most households.â&#x20AC;? SA is the only state where an independent chain is serious competition for Woolworths

and Coles. Foodland has 118 stores and attracts 32 percent of the market. As part of its expansion it will open 22 new stores across SA. "At Foodland we specialise in products sourced from Australia, and particularly South Australia. Our prices are competitive with other supermarkets but we add a wide range of products - finer supplies - that are different and we have the flexibility to stock products for a local community." "Foodland is a creative and innovative retailer," said Mr Sciacca. "We give customers what they want to buy, whereas other suppliers give customers what the retailer wants to sell." The store will create new jobs in Mawson Lakes that will be a mix of part-time and full-time positions and Foodland intends to recruit local people of different ages. Ed

How your air conditioner can save you money As temperatures rise and energy costs increase, new technologies to save energy are being developed in Mawson Lakes. Clean energy trends were demonstrated at the launch of a new product at The Light Factory (see page 9). Anup from Accumulus Energy in Mawson Lakes said that governments, industry and homemakers are looking for ways to reduce power bills while boosting their green credential. One of the biggest users of energy is the air conditioner and more than 80 percent of homes in SA use an air conditioner.

Environment: Pigeon Problem A professional pest controller has been hired by businesses to control the pigeon population at Mawson Lakes. The increasing number of feral pigeons (pictured in Mawson Lakes) pose a threat to health and safety. Pest controller Sean Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shea, who is a fully qualified and licensed pigeon shooter, said the birdsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; droppings were corrosive and toxic, and as deadly as asbestos.

The main source of all pigeon related problems in urban areas is deliberate and persistent overfeeding. While feeding feral pigeons may be a nice thing to do on a sunny afternoon it is causing an environmental problem that will result in culling. Put your rubbish in the bin, not in the lake or on the grass. Ed

Droppings damage air conditioners and roofs. Pigeons carry diseases that can affect native birds, humans and dogs. On pathways their droppings are unsightly and they pose a slip hazard for walkers and joggers. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources advises that feeding birds is a major stimulus to population growth and when birds grow to unmanageable numbers they become a pest.

Extension of Mawson Lakes Preschool A growing population of young families in Mawson Lakes has put increasing pressure on the Preschool situated in the grounds of Mawson Lakes School. Director of the Preschool, Sandra Cattel, said that one third of families were being turned away. In the spirit of humorous ditties in Christmas crackers, I thought I would share this with you to commence the New Year. It seems that a devout, couple were about to get married, but a tragic car accident ended their lives. When they were admitted into heaven they asked St. Peter if he could arrange for them to be married, saying that it was what they had hoped for in life, and they still desired wedded union by religious ceremony. St. Peter thought about it and agreed, but said they would have to wait as there was a shortage of priests in heaven. Hurry, spend that gift card Post Christmas warning Early last year local resident Shaynna Molly received 4 gift cards as birthday presents - one at a bookshop, another for a beauty treatment, one for a restaurant in Mawson Lakes, and a voucher to use in a department store - but when she went to reclaim her gifts she was too late. Shaynna put the gift cards in her wallet thinking she would use them later but in every case (except one) she lost out because the card had expired and the retailer refused to honour an outof-date voucher. In one instance the business had closed down. A look at the small print on the card confirmed that she had no legal rights to redeem the gifts. "I was really upset that my friends’ money (usually over $100) had gone to the retailer and not to me as intended. I am now very wary of gift cards," she said.

In Australia retailers’ gift cards have grown into a $2.5 billion a year business and almost nine out of ten Australians buy or receive one each year. Gift cards are growing in popularity as an easy way to solve the gift-giving dilemma. Also to serve as awards and prizes for competitons etc. Consumer group Choice says that gift cards are a very clever way for businesses to put restrictions on money. It’s an easy way for shops to make a sale and for customers to lose their money, so the

Wrap Rage Too many products are too hard to get into. The other day I bought a bag of nuts on the way home but when I left the store I couldn't open the tough, heat sealed plastic bag. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to use my teeth to rip the bag apart but the annoyance was growing inside me as my hunger increased and the delectables beckoned. Wrap rage is a new term given to the frustration derived from trying to open packaging that seems impenetrable. It might be a bottle of sauce or a jar of coffee, a cosmetic product, a medicinal capsule or some electronic equipment that needs a samurai sword to prise it open.

In Australia, the Arthritis Foundation is working with industry and government to review products and provide recommendations on improving accessibility. Goodbye Pastor Stephen After seven years as Pastor of Mawson Lakes Community Church, Stephen Trautwein and his sweet wife Fran are retiring. They are going home to the Riverland to look after their parents. The couple have been a vital, energetic and caring part of the Mawson Lakes Community and will be missed by those who were fortunate to know them. Colin Pridham wrote a farewell poem (printed here) which he read out at their final church service in November.

Who was Paquita? Behind the boat shed on Sir Douglas Mawson Lake is a park called Paquita Park, named in honour of the wife of Douglas Mawson. So what's the story behind Paquita . . . When I was visiting the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra recently I saw this portrait of Paquita that was painted in 1949. The gallery notes say . . . Francisca Adriana (Paquita) Mawson OB (nee Delprat, 1891-1974) came to Australia with her family in 1899, a year after her father Guillaume Delprat, became General Manager of the Broken Hill Company. She was 17 when she met geologist and explorer Douglas Mawson who was an associate of her father. They were engaged within a year and married in 1914, a month after Mawson’s return from the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. During the first World War, Paquita relocated to England where she assisted Mawson in his work for the Ministry of Munitions and where the second of their two daughters was born. Settling in Adelaide after the war, Paquita worked for organisations such as the Mothers and Babies Health Association and the Australian Red Cross Society and was equally prominent in the city’s social and cultural life. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1946 for her work with Dutch refugees during World War II: and was awarded an OBE in 1951. She also wrote and published two books - biographies of her father, A Vision of Steel (1958) and her husband, Mawson of the Antarctic (1964). Ed

Recipe - frozen fruit snacks for summer Ice blocks are a refreshing treat on a sunny day. Cool off this summer holidays by making your own delicious and healthy homemade frozen snacks.

Mango Lassi 2 peeled and chopped mangoes. 1/2 cup yoghurt or milk.

You don't really need a recipe, as essentially you are just freezing fruit and juice in icypole moulds but here are some flavour ideas for inspiration.

Blend until smooth, pour into moulds and freeze.

Tutti Fruitti 1 cup of mixed chopped fruit of your choice. 2 cups of fruit juice. Fill moulds half way with fruit and top up with juice before freezing. Smoothie Poles 1 banana 200g strawberry yoghurt 2 cups milk Blend banana, yoghurt and milk. Pour into moulds and freeze.

Berry Blend 250g mixed berries (fresh or frozen). juice of 1 lemon. 4 tablespoons cordial, water or juice. Blend until combined, leaving a few berry chunks for texture. Freeze and enjoy! If you have the patience, try combining a few flavours in layers. Fill the mould 1/3 of the way with one flavour and freeze. Then pour a second flavour on top and freeze again. Go for a third if you're game! YUM!

Loneliness can shorten life A study by SA Health has found that social isolation and loneliness are increasingly serious issues in SA. The report warns that feeling isolated can be just as damaging to a person’s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or drinking six standard alcoholic drinks. There is also a relationship between social isolation, depression and heart disease. The study looked into factors affecting the population’s health, including diet, exercise, infectious diseases and lifestyle. It identified loneliness and isolation as a major health issue in SA in the coming century. SA’s ageing population (16.7% are aged over 65) is contributing to the issue. Nearly 1 in 4 houses is occupied by only one person. Risk factors for loneliness and social isolation include widowhood and marriage breakdown,

being childless, deteriorating health and bereavement due to loss. Other socio-demographic factors include age and low income, particularly for women. Loneliness generally increases with age for men, while it decreases for women, perhaps because women seek greater social support. The report suggested that volunteering may play a major part in combating loneliness because it helps combat isolation by giving people a purpose thereby lowering heart rates and blood pressure, helping people sleep better and boosting energy levels.

Minister for Education and Child Development, Dr Susan Close, is the mother of two primary-school-aged children, and although she has a hectic work schedule she highly values the time she spends reading to her children at night. Here is her story. My children are in Years 5 and 7 – and I still read to them. Not because they can't read to themselves, but because I see so many benefits to sharing reading time together. Reading is the single most important skill we can teach our children, and a love of reading is the most important gift. Kids need to learn not only the mechanics of reading words, but how to derive meaning from what they read. Reading connects us to the world of ideas and knowledge. You can spot the schoolchildren who read widely – their general knowledge is broader, their vocabulary is larger and they tend to see multiple points of view. The early time of life is exactly when we should start reading to and with our children. My view is there isn't a time to stop reading with kids - at least until they physically barricade the door to keep you out! As a busy mum with work responsibilities that can stretch into the evening hours, I find spending

time with my two is precious. I have a rule: if I am home before 8:30pm I'll read to them, and I've been known to leave functions early to make it by then. Although my kids are good readers, I see many advantages in continuing to read to them. •

First, I get time alone with them, about half of which involves sharing a great story, and half is having a chat.

•

Second, I can choose a book that pushes their limits, so their minds are stretched by hearing more complex ideas and vocabulary.

•

Third, now they are a bit older, I really enjoy the books myself, so the reading is a pleasure and interesting to us all.

•

Finally, nothing says to your kids that you value reading more than actually choosing to read to them.

As we all battle to find a balance between work and family time – and struggle between the freedom of modern technology and the related tyranny of never actually getting away from work – it is worth making the effort to find time for reading with kids. Try it tonight. Choose a book, gather the children, and share a story, and your time.

Shopping at Bunnings with Nigella When the tradies pull into Bunnings with their dogs, what options do they have? Leave the dog on the back tray of the ute in the hot sun or put him inside the car, which is a dangerous place to wait. So in the best interest of dogs, hardware chain Bunnings has announced that dogs are allowed to enter the store if they are under the control of their owners.

Bunnings Managing Director John Gillam said the policy came about simply to update what the reality actually is. "For 20 years, in a low-key way, pet dogs have been visiting Bunnings stores- some have come in on the back of a tradie’s ute and other smaller dogs have been carried in by their owners." Well, that’s me. Mummy takes me everywhere, and if dogs are not welcome we simply don’t go. When we go shopping I often travel in a back pack, not to protect people from dogs, but to protect me from over-enthusiastic people! Of course, some people don’t like dogs and that’s part of life, even though I wag my tail at everyone and I like to chat. I must say that most of the staff at Bunnings at Parafield are ever so friendly. Many of them have dogs themselves and it's always a nice outing. And the smell of that BBQ . . .

My friend Marcia, a pug puppy who goes to Bunnings with her dad Brent Matthews (pictured), tucked inside his jacket, says she thinks Bunnings needs to have more doggie things on their shelves, and I agree. Mummy always comes away with a trolley full of plants, and I see the men loaded up with hardware stuff, but there’s nowhere for me to spend the family fortune. Maybe that will change too. There’s scope here for a whole new range of products. Anyway, thank you Bunnings for your dog-friendly policy and your lovely people.
