The coming of winter Snowflakes on the windscreen and wild weather marked the beginning of winter for me. I was in the highlands of Tasmania last month walking, touring and enjoying Tasmanian landscapes and fine food. I like the cool, moody weather of Tasmania . . . and with zero temperatures comes log fires, thick doonas and cosy indoor spaces. Nigella was there too in her warm overcoat scampering amongst the snow and running in the wind. To get her take on the trip see her article on page 28. We can both really recommend the beautiful Apple Isle for a holiday. On the home front things are buzzing. The highest property sale ever in Mawson Lakes fetched $1.525 million at auction a few weeks ago. Read about it on the opposite page. The ire of residents is expressed in this issue at a plan by Salisbury Council to rezone parts of Mawson Lakes. Residents raise environmental and economic concerns at plans to rezone a wetland area and put in more dwellings. Our wetlands are valuable assets, not only from an economic perspective but from an environmental aspect and we need to be vigilant in protecting them from developers.

Tasmania is full of examples of the power of the people to protect their natural heritage. I can remember fighting to save the Franklin River in the 1980s from hydro-electricity development. Today the Franklin runs free and as I crossed it several times during my recent travels I felt a tiny tinge of pride. The cover of the magazine this month shows the beauty of our environment in the Greenfields Wetlands at Mawson Lakes near the Watershed Restaurant. This is a stunning 12-metre work of art that recognises the original Aboriginal inhabitants of the Salisbury area - the Kaurna people. The sculpture resembles a flock of birds suspended in the sky. A boomerang flies through the flock in an effort to hit some birds and send them to the ground for food. You can read more about this artwork in the free online book Public Art in Mawson Lakes on the MLL website. Another aspect of man-made development of Mawson Lakes will be highlighted in a talk by Bruce Naumann from Salisbury Council on plans for the long-term management of water in Mawson Lakes. This includes a change to the management of water in Sir Douglas Mawson Lake. The public meeting is on 10 June in the Mawson Centre. Be there to hear the plans and have a voice. See page 5.

What public meeting? There is talk in Mawson Lakes about a public meeting by the local council that took place in April to discuss rezoning of some areas to allow more development. Most people in Mawson Lakes did not know there was a public meeting! The Chamber of Commerce did not know, the Mawson Centre did not know, Technology Park did not know, local residents did not know. I did not know and I have lived in ML for 10 years and take a keen interest in local affairs. If you want to talk to the people of Mawson Lakes put it in Mawson Lakes Living. Everybody here reads this publication, all the rest gets chucked in the bin as junk mail, drenched in the rain or run over by cars on the footpath. - Matthew Michaels Editor: I agree Matthew. See page 10 Bird identification The e-book on Birds of Mawson Lakes (www.mawsonlakesliving.info) is proving very useful. Tina Edwards who is 94 years old and a resident of Helping Hand Aged Care walks most days around Mawson Lakes. She was curious about two large birds. A look at the e-book found they were the Australian White Ibis and the Great Egret. I printed them out on photo paper, framed them and gave them to her as a gift. Cheap solar panels hurt ML industry Five years ago when Tindo Solar opened in Mawson Lakes (MLL cover/Issue 57) I joined an inspection tour of the plant in Technology Park and was impressed with the quality of the solar panels being manufactured and the business planned to grow the industry to 250 employees in 5 years. Tindo was an $8 million dollar investment. Today Tindo is the last solar panel producer in Australia and has a staff of only 20 employees. At the opening of Tindo the politicians were full of encouragement and I remember seeing a picture of the Prime Minister at the site. Recently I read that Tindo is struggling to survive as cheap Chinese solar panels flood the market. Ben Kerry, financial officer at Tindo said: “we’re not asking the government for subsidies, we’re not asking for protectionism, what we’re asking for is fair trade." It concerns me that Australia is becoming a dumping ground for cheap overseas products and in the process we are destroying Australian industry and jobs. - Peter Butler Groundbreaking news It’s happened again. An original article published in Mawson Lakes Living has been picked up by the media and made into national news. The latest instance is your story on Water Contamination in MLL/April which is making headlines around Australia. Post Office Management How is it that Australia Post is not viable and can’t make a profit even after they sack 900 people but pay their CEO $4 million dollars a year. I put it down to lots of bad decisions, such as failing to keep pace with a changing market, and diversification of business to the point where it’s painful to stand in line at the PO while people fumble with bills, buy toys, t-shirts and pencil cases. Australia Post is increasing prices for reduced service that does not deliver on time . . . and of course the foolish decision to deny a post office in Mawson Lakes which would have been a profit centre. How many more bad decisions have they made? Australia Post is poorly managed. The solution - sack the CEO, go back to basics, close unprofitable centres . . . and open a post office in Mawson Lakes.- S. Sallick

Cambodia Project

Gail is the Industry Liaison Manager at Uni SA Mawson Lakes.

Known for her work placing university students with industry, Gail Jackman took on a new challenge when she first set off for Cambodia in 2011 to improve the infrastructure in rural areas.

Australian university students are purify ing water

in Cambodia.

Now, each year, Gail takes a group of final year students from engineering, business, health science, information technology and environment to Cambodia to work on humanitarian projects.

"We collect the bottles and fill them with clean rubbish such as paper, cardboard and other non-organic waste material. The bottles are then stacked and secured in a shape with a mesh blanket that forms a wall. They are rendered in place. We turn landfill into classrooms."

The next group will leave in September for 6 weeks with a federal government grant and sponsorship from industry. Objectives of the trip are to improve new learning stations, provide safe water, improve health, and educate the children on ways to protect their environment.

"The bottles provide good insulation, and the process helps get rid of a lot of the rubbish in the district," said Gail. "Everybody in the village helps with collection, sorting and stuffing so that both adults and children are learning new construction skills."

As part of the program over the last 4 years, Gail’s team has built schools, computer laboratories and a library in an ingenious way. They convert rubbish into building material to make walls.

"We then teach the villagers how to light their buildings using solar power and how to purify their water and build vertical gardens."

Gail explains that water in Cambodia is not safe to drink so people buy water in plastic bottles then discard the bottles.

Gail is highly regarded in her field and has won many awards for her work including an award from the Vice Chancellor in 2011 for professional staff excellence. Ed

Watershed Art Prize Last month, at an announcement in the John Harvey Gallery, Sum Woon Chow’s ‘A Sacred Balance:H20’ was hailed as the overall winner of the 2015 Watershed Art Prize. The Watershed Art Prize competition was established by the City of Salisbury 6 years ago to encourage awareness of water as a precious resource and a significant environmental management issue. Artists from all over South Australia are invited to submit works which focus on water sustainability and wetland biodiversity. Sum Woon Chow believes that the art of painting has endured countless predictions of its death. He continues to paint because the challenge to defend the artform's relevance keeps him interested. This is what Sum Woon Chow had to say about his winning piece:

"I made my painting in response to a subject that is often taken for granted but materially vital to all living organisms." He says his paintings are only seeds for conversations – for rediscovering our place in nature. He hopes his work generates discussion about the environment of which we are all a part. Rezoning upsets residents - Report by Cherie Hicks At a public meeting in April, Salisbury Council discussed plans for rezoning Mawson Lakes. This plan is called the Mawson Lakes Development Plan Amendment (DPA). Areas under consideration for amendment include Sharp Court, the rail corridor, Hudson Road, the corner of Main North and Montague Roads, Mary and Dan Streets and an area of wetlands in Sholahaven to be zoned residential in place of wetlands. This rezoning has raised concerns amongst residents, in paticular those who fear that part of the Mawson Lakes wetlands are under threat. Three submissions were heard at the public hearing on 21 April. Two of these were from local residents from Shoalhaven and the other was from the airport. Local resident Tom Steel made the point that if Shoalhaven’s wetlands are zoned residential, Council will be failing to adhere to its own Biodiversity Plan. Road congestion will increase and the value of houses in the area will be reduced as water views disappear. In a submission by Cherie Hicks it was pointed out that Mawson Lakes has an international reputation for water management.

She asked what would happen to the water from the wetlands should it be drained by developers to make way for more buildings. Cherie and her husband have undertaken monthly bird surveys. To date they have recorded 100 varieties including 5 migratory birds, one bird coming from as far away as Siberia. Australia subscribes to international agreements which protect the habitats for these birds. The wetland form part of the birds’ habitat. Adelaide Airport Ltd on behalf of Parafield Airport made a submission based on 4 key areas - the building heights surrounding the airport, recognition of noise, considerations of a national guidelines framework and incorporation of public safety. The protection of the ongoing operation of Parafield Airport from encroachment from inappropriate development must be considered in Council’s Development Plan. This includes structures attached to the tops of buildings and the impact of construction, such as cranes, which may endanger aircraft operations. Chloe Lee Valentine died at Ingle Farm on 20 January 2012 aged just 4 years and 5 months. Chloe repeatedly fell from a motorcycle that she was forcibly and repeatedly placed upon. She weighed 17 kilograms, the motorcycle weighed 50 kilograms. She remained unconscious on the ground for over 8 hours while the adults who supervised her looked on the internet for what to do with an unconscious person and occupied themselves with Facebook and internet banking. Lying there on the ground, Chloe eventually stopped breathing and died. You have heard it mentioned in the media – but I recommend you read the report of the inquest conducted by Mr Mark Johns, our State Coroner. It is a powerful denunciation of the past and current practices and culture of Families SA, a government department headed by a highly paid public servant whose responsibility it is to safeguard children in our community who are known to be at risk. This report is a testament to the rightful place in our community of a Coroner who is appointed to act independently of Government. We can be comforted by the fact that we have a Coroner who will speak up boldly and loudly when required and call to account the Government and those public servants who are paid public funds to meet public needs. Holidaying With Dogs

When mummy got an invitation to tour the west coast of Tasmania last month she said yes . . . on one condition. I had to go too. Lucky me! Now taking a dog to Tasmania is quite a challenge, but armed with a book on pet-friendly accommodation it worked out brilliantly and we stayed in some wonderful out-of-the-way-places and met some very nice people. More and more people are travelling with their dogs so I want to tell you how to get in on the next family adventure. Firstly, grab a copy of Holidaying With Dogs for about $20, or go online. The book lists 2,000 dogfriendly cottages, caravan parks, camping grounds, host farms, motels and holiday houses throughout Australia. We booked well ahead and checked on the conditions at each place so there were no surprises.

Getting across Bass Strait was no bother as we took the car to Tasmania on the overnight ferry out of Melbourne. Mummy put my bed on the back seat and I spent the night in the car. Come 7.30 next morning we were on our way. I love Tassie - got to play in the snow, visit a farm and talk to the animals, run on the beaches, go to galleries, climb steep mountains and eat lots of fish.

Strange neighbours on the farm

When we arrived in Hobart we stayed in a cosy little Victorian cottage called Peck’s on Pine with a "five paw" rating. The first thing that greeted me was a bag of doggie biscuits. So thoughtful. Later on, owner Fiona, popped in to say hello. She is a volunteer who collects injured animals and takes them to a shelter. When she said goodbye she was off to pick up a joey who’s mother was a victim of road-kill. Fiona is a gentle and genuine animal lover so we got on really well. Another time we stayed on a farm in Quamby and here my nose worked overtime checking out the many different smells, and my ears stayed pricked all night listening to strange country noises. It’s doggone good to travel.
