Quality art in Mawson Lakes How fortunate we are to be surrounded by quality public art in Mawson Lakes; and the collection keeps growing. A large new addition has come our way from the acclaimed artist Sydney Ball. Ball is an art trailblazer, recognised as an Australian pioneer of the abstract movement. His famous painting Pale Stream is on the cover of this issue and behind me is another much-loved Ball painting Magellan Blue. Recently I attended the launch of Ball's prestigious art collection valued at more than $1 million which he has gifted to the University of South Australia. His art is on display on the walls of the Sir Eric Neal Library on the campus at Mawson Lakes. You can go into the library and explore the paintings for yourself. See page 6.
Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Advertising is open to anyone with products, services or events relevant to the people of Mawson Lakes.

UniSA Mawson Lakes has a new Pro Vice Chancellor, a trailblazer of a different kind. A profile of Professor Simon Beecham is in this issue outlining his vision for the future of education. Read about it on page 11. On the calendar this month we celebrate Mother’s Day, so MLL has been asking mothers about the advice their mothers gave them that they pass on to their children. Read their words of wisdom on page 14. We have also developed a centrefold - a Guide to Shopping for Mother’s Day so you can buy your gifts locally and support the advertisers who make it possible to produce your community magazine. Volunteers who give their time are a vital part of Mawson Lakes and this month MLL marks Volunteer Week - a time when we want to recognise our valued volunteers who work across a range of activities. We thank you all and appreciate your gift of time as we continue to seek your support and help.

have your say... Narelle and Craig Leahy, The Peppercorns We have just bought a house in Mawson Lakes and love it here. Everything you need is close by and the suburb has an amazing variety of people of all ages and many cultures. We look out every month for the community magazine. It's a window to the suburb and has helped us navigate our way around the shops and find out-of-the-way services.
Parks and Playgrounds in Mawson Lakes What a wonderful and informative eBook from MLL. I can appreciate all the research and time spent putting it together and I am sure the community will love it and use it for fun and adventure. - Marlene Tribbeck Watch your step I was in a bit of a hurry. Enjoying the trees of residential streets in Mawson Lakes, I was nearly home, when I tripped. Crunch! There I was, sprawled along the pavers. No one around. As I picked myself up, I saw a red splash on the ground and as I reached up to hold my chin, there was another! As soon as I could, I got home and headed straight to the sink. Nice clean split. No broken teeth, but a sore jaw. This has slowly improved with gentle stretching. Xrays confirmed no jaw fractures or dislocations. Staff at the local medical surgery were so supportive and understanding, as were my friends and family. I could feel God’s love in action. So if you go out walking - or running - please watch the path in front of you, and concentrate on the road ahead. - Fran Trautwein All round winner Great story on the greyhound Nigella (MLL/April). Waver is an all round winner - on the track, as a stud, and at home. Enjoyable reading. - Ian Russell

Development of wetlands As a resident in Mawson Lakes it is very concerning that there could be any thought of development that could encroach on the wetlands. When it comes to weighing up development and conservation of wildlife areas, recreational areas, bushland, etc, it is too often the case that developers are able to go ahead. And the reason, as far as I see it, is clearly financial. The dry dams in The Sanctuary and the park alongside the railway track in The Bridges probably look good to an investor/developer. But why is there ongoing building when there are so many apartments and shops standing empty? - Lesley Rosenthal Bird Book I have checked out the book Birds of Mawson Lakes on the MLL website. It is wonderful! My road goes down into the Sturt Gorge so we have lots of birds – but not as many as your end of the world. I will point out the book to the Field Naturalists Society – they will be very interested in it as well. - Rona Sakko Manager, Safer Communities Australia Calming the traffic Elder Smith Drive is becoming increasingly unsafe as drivers use it as a speedway or short-cut between Main North Road and Salisbury Highway. As Salisbury Highway has a 60km limit could Elder Smith Drive have the same speed limit to calm the traffic?

Dumping on vacant land It is with great disapointment that every time I go for a walk in Mawson Lakes I see that vacant land is being used as dumping sites. The City of Salisbury has 2 options for residents to correctly dispose of hard rubbish. Details on how this operates can be found at: www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/Services/ Waste_and_Recycling_Services/Hard_waste. I have used this service myself and have to say that it is convenient and easy. To report dumping in your area ring Council on 8406 8222. - Ricardo

Trucks on walkways Vehicles on pathways at Mawson Lakes are a concern to residents. The network of walking pathways is a fine feature of Mawson Lakes but these pathways are made of pavers. They are not constructed to carry vehicles, particularly heavy trucks. I have observed garden maintenance trucks (glg) drive on walkways to empty rubbish bins when a road was just a few metres away. To access the parklands, heavy vehicles ride up over gutters, they damage pavers and cause them to move, hence the pathways start to shift. In wet weather truck tyres gouge great scars in the grass and these valleys fill with water. Our walkways are for pedestrians including small children, kids on their way to school, dogs out for a walk and cyclists. Trucks moving on these pathways are dangerous and inconvenient. How can we stop this? - John Stallman

Dog attack Our gentle little poodle was walking around the lake when a big dog attacked her. Both dogs were on a lead but the attacker was being held by a small child. Seeing our dog, the big dog charged and the child could not hold him and dropped the lead. The owner collected his dog and hurriedly disappeared from the scene so no details were recorded. The incident cost us $1600 at the vet and huge anxiety. The message for others is if your dog is attacked grab your iphone and take a photo of the aggressor if you can (dog and owner). Try to get the owner’s details. Report the incident to Council. It is not appropriate for kids to be in charge of dogs.

Major art gift on display in Mawson Lakes A rich body of artworks by the acclaimed Adelaide-born artist Sydney Ball, graces the walls of the university library in Mawson Lakes. Thirty paintings valued at more than $1 million now hang in large expanses on the walls of the Sir Eric Neal Library. When bush fires threatened his studio in NSW, Ball, 81, decided to gift his artwork to his alma matter, the University of South Australia.
"The gift means I can share my paintings with other artists, students and the general pubic instead of storing them away," he said at the opening of the display earlier this year. The prestigious gift spans 50 years of the artist’s career. Throughout his life Ball has been an art trailblazer and he is recognised as an Australian pioneer of the abstract painting movement. Unveiling the collection, the Vice Chancellor of UniSA, Professor David Lloyd, said that Ball’s gift is the most valuable gift of Australian art to UniSA.

Ball is best known for painting on a large scale using strong contrasting colour as seen in Magellan Blue (1978) and Pale Stream (1976) which is pictured on the cover of this issue. Other streams on display that the artist pursued at different times in his life are expressionist paintings of the land, and a series of ridged geometric forms. More lately his work displays saturated colour and jagged forms that explore colour depth and intensity. Ball's works are on permanent display at the Sir Eric Neal Library. Large posters explain his life history and his connection to Adelaide. Members of the public can visit during library opening hours 8.30am to 8.30pm daily and 2pm to 6pm on weekends. Ed

Janelle's Battle Last year was the blackest year that Janelle McLean has ever endured. It was Valentine’s Day 2014 when the doctor told her she had breast cancer.
In February this year Janelle got the all clear.
Janelle (50) who lives in Mawson Lakes, said the ordeal was so overwhelming and so terrifying that she didn’t know where to turn or who to talk to. She found very little easy-to-read material to comfort and inform her and the brochures from the hospital were morbid. “There was so much to take in, so much to terrify me,” she recalls. Every day in a diary she would note her feelings and record her treatment and this became the basis for a book for people who are similarly frightened. "I was in the grip of cancer for nearly a year and my life was dictated by visits to the doctor, chemotherapy and radiation. I’m relieved to say that I'm well again and starting to put my life back together."
Her hair has grown back thick and curly, and although her medication is ongoing and she will always live in Looking good and feeling well, Janelle the shadow of McLean in 2015 after her battle with cancer. cancer, she feels she is gaining control over her life again rather than her life revolving around doctors' appointments and hospital visits. At the conclusion of her treatment, she and her partner took a much-needed holiday to Tasmania to unwind because they were both so battle-weary.
Writing her book called "Janelle’s Journey" helped her come to terms with her ordeal, to express her fears and to thank the people who travelled the journey with her.
This year, life is much brighter and Janelle is setting new goals to do with sport, travel and work. She hopes her story will give others courage to fight the cancer battle. Ed

"I was fighting a battle and I needed a plan of attack. When you leave the cocoon of a hospital environment it’s easy to slip into a state of druginduced depression," said Janelle. "I didn't want to go there and I didn’t want to be a burden on others so I tried very hard to maintain a normal pattern throughout my treatment. I went to work, maintained a social life and kept exercising, even if I could only manage the 'chemo shuffle to the shops'."
You can get a copy of Janelle’s book from www.janellesjourney.com or on 0403 539 226. Cost is $25 for a printed copy and $10 online.

Finance with Joe Vancura Planning for a family Beginning a family is one of life’s great rites of passage: everything you thought you knew is about to change forever. Whilst a joyful and wondrous time, beginning a family is also a costly adventure (the average cost of raising two kids being currently a little over $800,000) - so in between painting the nursery and buying the crib, take time to plan for your child’s future. Have you thought about the immediate costs of taking time off work? Check your leave entitlements early (hopefully you’ve some holiday leave tucked away), then formulate a savings plan around any income gaps in advance. Don’t forget to check-in with the Government’s Department of Human Services to see what parental benefits may be available, too. Every little bit helps, particularly if it helps you stay away from those all-too-convenient credit cards. Have you thought about future schooling for your little darling? You might like to invest in a small property on your child’s behalf, or purchase shares to be later cashed in to pay for a private school education.

Changes in Learning at UniSA The newly appointed Pro Vice Chancellor at Mawson Lakes, Professor Simon Beecham, said it is imperative that universities change to keep pace with digitally skilled students. “Most students work part-time in order to fund their studies so they want flexible learning. The traditional model of a large audience sitting in front of a lecturer is being replaced by video lectures, online learning and external courses that are accessible to students at a time that suits them.” "This does not mean the demise of academics. Nowadays lecturers run small-class tutorials where interactivity is encouraged and students are stimulated with problem-solving exercises." Professor Beecham said that UniSA is proactive in engaging students. It is one of the first universities to appoint a pro vice chancellor to develop the student experience. At Mawson Lakes the university library is being transformed into a student learning hub. Books are being replaced with computers and spaces are becoming centres of culture and relaxation, with more project rooms for peer interaction.
“Campus socialisation, forming friends and peer study sessions are still an important component of a university education,” he said. With a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Manchester in England, Prof Beecham migrated to Australia in 1991. When he moved to Adelaide eight years ago he was appointed Director of the Centre for Water Management and Reuse. Then in 2010 he became Head of the School of the Natural and Built Environment. This year he has taken on the role of Pro Vice Chancellor in the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment, making him the top man at UniSA Mawson Lakes. One of his objectives is to build closer relationships with industry. "I want innovative businesses, particularly in energy and engineering to have a collaborative presence on campus and test their installations here where we have space, clever researchers and well equipped laboratories." "The future of education is in a digital environment and I am enthused by the change," said Professor Beecham.
Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Beecham wants to increase the vibrancy of the university campus by building closer connections with industry and improving student engagement.

National Volunteer Week
11-17 May
Volunteering Australia says that just a few hours of volunteer work makes a difference in the happiness and mood of the volunteer. It also makes a huge differnce in the community. Research shows that half of all the people who volunteer in Australia are employed. These are people with a strong sense of responsibility to the community in which they live. In Mawson Lakes we have many volunteers who give their time to maintain a caring community and a better place - socially and environmentally. Many of our volunteers are listed below. National Volunteer Week provides a great opportunity for us all to say thanks to the volunteers who make our community stronger, and let them know their efforts and commitment are appreciated, so if you see volunteers at work take a moment to acknowledge their contribution. Mawson Lakes Living relies heavily on volunteers to produce and distribute the magazine. The editor works as a volunteer and takes no financial return from the magazine.
Helping her are Cliff Arnold, Karina Bobridge, Karin Brown, Ann and Murray Diment, Erik Helgerod, Ali Helliwell, Kerry Henderson, Mary and Geoff Hill, MLL Volunteer, Marlene Tribbeck Mike Holtby, Cheryl and Mark Jaeschke, Trevor and Kris Mead, Frank Pellas, Ian Russell, Kay Scarlett, Vince Spartano, Colin and Margaret Taylor, Marlene Tribbeck, Berry van Vuuren, Viv Ward, Steve and Elaine White and John Wilmot. Many thanks to all. I couldn’t do it without you! Claudine Spinner, Manager of Community Development at The Mawson Centre says all her volunteers are registered with the City of Salisbury and perform a wide range of tasks such as administration, program support and event planning. "As part of Volunteer Week we would like to say how grateful we are to our volunteers whose contribution each week is so valuable. A big thank you to Judy, Sharan, Jonathon, Cathy, Steve and Marie."
FRIENDS OF THE PLEDGER WETLANDS (pictured below) The Friends of Pledger Wetlands is a volunteer group of (mostly) Mawson Lakes residents. Mother's Advice On the second Sunday in May we honour mothers. Mother's Day is an occasion to thank mothers for their love, their care and the spirit of selflessness they bring to the role. Every day mothers juggle a formidable round of minor matters from school lunches to ferrying children to events during school hours and beyond.
And it does not stop at school. Mothers listen, guide and love forever. Their advice rings throughout the generations. Mawson Lakes Living asked the mothers of Mawson Lakes for the advice their mothers gave them that they are now passing down to their children.

2010 Bent Creek Cabernet Merlot Bent Creek wines are located in the heart of McLaren Vale, known as McLaren Flat. McLaren Flat is a sub region of the Vale. It benefits from cool nightly breezes, coupled with long warm days that ensure the reds from this area are opulent and elegant in structure. At Bent Creek this has enabled the wine makers to create wines with excellent balance, structure and flavour. This wine is a perfect example of an aged McLaren Vale red. Sourced from two of the best growers in the Vale this blend shows what elegance McLaren Vale has to offer in the Cabernet family. With dark cassis fruit and clove spice, the palate is all Cabernet with dark fruits, spicy undertones and textural tannins. The Merlot softens the palate giving it a soft textural structure. Let me provide an example of a service that is available at Dental on Metro. If you do not like particular aspects of your front teeth such as the shape, size, position or colour, our clinicians are able to use materials ‘on-the-spot’ (while you watch) to ‘mock up’ your new smile. When you are perfectly happy with the result we then use an accurate 3D laser scan to import the new shape into our CAD-CAM software. From here the software is able to use this new shape to propose then mill fine, realistic, life-like, highly cosmetic and super strong veneers. Shape, size, position and colour can be corrected. Our ceramics are furnace glazed (not just polished) to provide a glassy life-like translucency and are completely metal free and are ‘computer’ accurate in fit. Old crowns can be re-done with improved gum lines and old discoloured fillings can be covered. Worn down teeth can be built up. High maintenance teeth can be turned into low maintenance teeth. Because this is all done on-site, the finished result can be available within an hour or several days for more comprehensive cases. The same software can import 3D scans of your jaw for virtual implant planning. These procedures are claimable on most dental extras cover. At Dental on Metro we are continuing our training and development so that we can provide our clients with the best. Come in and see what we can do for you.

Business Using referees at job interviews When you write a resume for a job application, it’s likely the new employer will ask for referees to speak about your previous work skills and experiences. You can either write "referees available on request" or you can list people to contact. If you choose to list your referees make sure you ask their permission, including the contact details the person is happy to list. This will include organisation and position, name of referee, phone numbers (office or personal) and email. Ask them about their preferred times and if they are planning to be away.
Even if your referees have supported you before it is courteous to alert them to each new job application, if you want their assistance. By listing “referees available on request you have greater control over who gets called and when. There is no need to alert your referees until the interview process looks promising.
Give them the details of your application so they You can then contact them and tell them to expect a call and remind them of the experiences you are ready to talk about the time you worked together and recall examples of your relationship. shared and the selection criteria for the new job.

Legal Eagle’s Perch with Bill Morris The case of the sex worker and the client. In January this year the Federal Circuit Court decided a case about whether two people were in a de-facto relationship. The facts: • They met in 1999 when Ms K. was employed as a sex worker and Mr X. was one of her regular clients. • After a while she began to involve him socially with her family. Their sexual relationship continued but was no longer a “commercial one”. • Later she ceased her job as a sex worker at his request. • She claimed they lived in a de facto relationship from about 2003 to 2011. • In 2003 he owned real estate properties in which he lived. She lived with him at least two nights a week, but not more than five. She did cleaning work at the houses when she was living there. • Their sexual relationship continued throughout the whole 8 year period but they kept their financial affairs completely separated. The Judge decided that although they “had a mutual commitment to a shared life together” some of the indicators of de-facto relationship were present and some were not. The lack of shared finances was an important fact in his decision. Ms K’s application for a share of his property was dismissed. The Judge said “… there is no ‘bright line’ test” of a de-facto relationship. For low cost advice as to whether you have commenced a de-facto relationship and placed your personal property at risk of division with your partner, make an appointment to see me.

Movie Review
“Once upon a time . . .” So begins the spellbinding film of Cinderella, a movie of fantasy for children, but with a captivating story for adults who are willing to be enchanted. The story of Cinderella (Lily James) follows the fortunes of young Ella whose father remarries following the death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally, relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind." She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. Then one day she meets a dashing stranger in the woods (Richard Madden). Unaware that he is a prince, Ella feels a strong attraction towards him, and he towards her. When the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, CInderella's stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand when Cinderella's fairy godmother comes to her rescue and transforms a pumpkin into a golden coach to take her to the ball.

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 95 - May 2015
This modern-day version is a tale as old as time, but here we have real actors rather than Disney characters, and Cinderella may be a girl reduced to domestic service, but she is no victim. She is undaunted by the spectacular cruelty of her step-family, is unimpressed by wealth and status and falls not for a prince but an “apprentice” whom she meets on equal grounds out riding in the woods. The whizz bang effects on the big screen create dramatic cinematography. The ball scene is breathtaking as carefully choreographed cameras swirl around dazzling sets with all the grace and charm of a classic Hollywood musical. The orchestral score charms too, harking back to a bygone era of ravishing romance. The sequence at midnight when Cinderella’s fleeing carriage turns back into a pumpkin, the footmen to lizards and the horses to mice, is a skilfully paced dramatic highlight. Everything about the film is visually stunning, from the sets to the costumes to the actors. I was particularly taken by the use of colour, such as the transformative magic of the fairy godmother when she turns Cinderella’s dress into a blue ball gown covered in crystals as if it were cut from the night sky. Dressed in sparkling blue, CInderella morphs from a country girl into a regal figure who is ready to become a princess. By contrast, Lady Tremaine, the wicked godmother, wears green which runs from deep and rustling tones to poisonous acid lime - "50 shades of fierce.” - Ed

EMPLOYEE PROFILE Penny Reidy, Marketing & Communications Manager How long have you worked in travel?
What destinations are on your bucket list?
I am a rookie; I have only been in travel for 2.5 years. Previous roles were in higher education and defence.
South America and Antarctica are the last two continents for me to tick off my list – both big ticket items that will need some heavy investing into my bucket!
Where is your favourite destination? I am a big New York City fan. It is my favourite city in the world and continues to surprise me on every visit. Favourite thing to do while travelling? Cycling tours. You see places from a different angle and experience everything at a slower pace. What do you never travel without?
Best tip for first time travellers. Learning a few phrases to use in non-english speaking countries is a great pre-trip investment. Locals appreciate the effort of tourists being able to say please, thank you, hello and goodbye in the local language.
Travel Insurance! I have heard some horror stories from people that have had freak accidents whilst travelling – the costs can be horrendous.
What is your claim to fame.
If you could travel with anyone, who would it be?
Where are you travelling in 2015?
Someone from a remote area that had never travelled before. I love seeing the reactions on a traveller’s face when they first enjoy a new experience.
I am Under 9’s Team Manager at Pooraka Bulls Football Club. My 8yo son thinks that is impressive! Just back from an Easter break in Bali, my next planned trip is a two week cruise from Perth to Singapore enjoying some great destinations in Asia along the way.

Friendly Dogs
by Nigella
Plugged In, Tuned Out The other day I received a letter from an elderly man who walks around Mawson Lakes. I see him some mornings, and if I’m outside I say hello. This is what he wrote . . . I have lived in Mawson Lakes a long time and I used to love going for a walk and stopping to chat with other walkers, but sadly my early morning walk over the last couple of years has become quite lonely. Nearly all of the oncoming pedestrians have their heads down and their ears plugged with earphones. It seems that verbal greetings are gone forever, other than an occasional jogger who offers a "hi" or a weak wave between puffs. In this new technical age I feel invisible.

Thank goodness all is not lost and my daily walk has a few friendly highlights. Along the lake is a golden labrador who sits at his back fence and here I am greeted with a smile, a lick and a wagging tail. The dog is telling me he is pleased to see me. Then as I turn into your street Nigella on some mornings I see you sitting in the sun, out the front, or maybe on your veranda behind the rose bushes or on the grassy verge as your owner tends her gorgeous garden. When you see me and I say, “Hello Nigella” you slip out of the garden and come over to me wagging your tail and smiling to say hello. It’s just a short time before you turn back, but the friendliness of the dogs makes my morning.

The "good mornings and how are you?" are disappearing and a friendly chat with the neighbours is a thing of the past. The school students with pulsating thumbs who pass me by have their ear pieces plugged in and their eyes glazed over as they mouth their favourite tunes, so there’s no opportunity there to say a few words.

Good Neighbours Neighbour Day is a national, annual event run by Relationships Australia and held on the last Sunday in March each year. A neighbourhood is strong when people look out for each other, not in an intrusive way but in a neighbourly way. Good neighbour interrelation creates a safer and friendlier suburb. Mawson Lakes Living hosted a neighbourhood afternoon tea this year in Parkview Reserve under a gazebo to foster social connection.

Coke goes green: Coca-Cola Amatil has launched a new line of soft drink called Coke Life that has 35 percent less sugar and calories than traditional Coke. The green bottles started to appear in stores after Easter. The new cola has a natural sweetener made from the leaves of the Stevia plant from Paraquay which has zero calories. Coke hopes to re-engage customers, particularly the 30 to 45-year-olds who are concerned about unhealthy sugary drinks and artificial sweeteners, and older consumers looking for less energy intensive drinks. This is Amatil’s latest product since it launched Coke Zero in 2006.
