Keep to the left When driving a car in Australia we follow the road rule of "Keep to the Left". Without this rule there would be chaos. The same applies when walking and cycling. I often do a footpath shuffle in Mawson Lakes when I'm out walking and people are coming towards me in the opposite direction. If everyone follows the Keep Left rule it makes it really simple to share a path. It's pleasing to report that plans for the Christmas Carols and the Christmas Market are on a roll for the end of the year with lots of local support. MLL is a sponsor for both of these happenings and I urge others to get behind interactive community events.
Mother's Day is on Sunday 8 May and to help you choose a gift we have prepared a beautiful centrefold so you can buy local. Then on page 26 you'll find a simple Mother's Day recipe prepared by international chef Aamod who lives in Mawson Lakes.

Healthy Mind Platter The best article I have ever read in MLL was The Healthy Mind Platter (MLL/March/p20). It made me examine my own life and assess if I am engaging in the seven activities necessary for optimum mental health. I decided I’m not taking in enough mental nutrients every day. I cut out the article to keep, copied it and gave it to other members of my family. - Lisa Fixing Easter I agree with your editorial about a set date for easter (MLL/March). First weekend of April would do just fine. Yes, I understand it’s a religious holiday but that’s really no longer relevant to most people. If the churches can’t agree, let the government decide. As for me, just give me a choclately-four-day-weekend with some cute bunnies and let’s leave it at that! - Dan Nuclear State It’s a worry when SA cannot operate, maintain and protect its residents from burst water mains: makes me wonder how the government
can safely operate, maintain and protect us from nuclear waste over thousands of years. The correspondent in MLL/April is right: we do not want to become the Nuclear State. Scary stuff. Ethan Pambow Local service providers I agree with Marie Woerth (MLL/March). It would be handy to find in MLL, electricians, plumbers, painters etc who live in Mawson Lakes and service Mawson Lakes. - Mark White, Cascades Northern Blackspot Accidents are increasingly happening on Elder Smith Drive (ESD) due to the growth in traffic, the expansion of ML and the design of the road which forces drivers to merge. People use the ESD as a quick route from Main North Road to Salisbury Highway. Nothing wrong with that except the road was not designed for so much traffic. With the opening of OTR and the proposed development at Parafield along Main North Road, ESD is becoming a major artery,

Electronic Learning with Lady Tech Man is seen as technical and when a woman wants a technical solution she calls for a man. Amanda McPhee from Lady Tech wants to change this perception and teach women how to use technology so they will reduce the technology gender gap. "The world is speaking a new language - the language of computers and technology - and if women don’t learn the language they will be left behind in our rapidly changing electronic world," she said from her office in Technology Park. Amanda developed and runs Lady Tech, an organisation that conducts courses to show women (and men) how to connect with machines and overcome the barriers that hold them back from using electronic devices and the internet effectively. "Technology is about information. And information is power. If you do not have upto-date information you become increasingly powerless." she said. She wants to provide women with the skills and tools so they can compete in the business environment. Her courses are also designed for anyone who wants to communicate via electronic devices, whether that be using dictation tools to

write a book, searching for recipes, doing tax and banking online, or talking to friends and family across the world via real-time video. Her courses are designed for all ages and all skill levels. Men are not excluded. If you don’t have a modern device, Lady Tech will lend you one to get started. "There’s a gender gap in our society and it’s my mission to narrow the gap," said Amanda who has spent many years specialising in technology training in government services. She is now launching into private industry and is writing a book to explain the language of technology which will be available in March 2017.

Jobs growth and increased investment in the northern suburbs are the centrepiece of the NEP, with the announcement of $24 million for new initiatives to identify key industry sectors and retrain workers for new careers. The NEP, which includes a new 40-acre Food Park, will help us respond to some of the challenges likely to be faced with the closure of Holden next year. The opening of the new Aldi store at Parafield Gardens is also a good sign for local jobs. The closure of Holden will have flow-on effects both directly for components suppliers and also indirectly for other northern businesses. That’s why it’s so important to invest now in job creation in Mawson Lakes and Parafield Gardens. For more information on the NEP go to www.looknorth.com.au The Rotary Clubs of Salisbury and Elizabeth along with the Polaris Centre at Mawson Lakes are playing leadership roles in regional business networking and education. The monthly Northern Business Breakfast and regular Northern Business Women’s Network events are two such initiatives which provide practical short-term assistance to help realise improved performance and growth opportunities. Dr Peter Bertossa BDS I would certainly agree that having regard to the things we should minimise in our diet is still definitely the safer ground when it comes to the health of your teeth, however scientific evidence has arisen to the benefits of certain foods.
Awesome! But which ones?
Well to expunge some of your Easter guilt, the good news is that Chocolate is on the list. Before you get too excited we are talking dark chocolate here in small amounts. For the same benefit but without the sugar and calories, raw chocolate, or even less palatable, chewing on cacao nibs is considered beneficial to your teeth. Property Tips with Ben Frank RENT-VESTING Our long held and much loved Australian Dream – to start a family, buy a house and settle down in the suburbs – may be a thing of the past. These days our Gen Y buyers want to live in a nice house or apartment close to amenities and lifestyle hotspots. These tend to be areas in high demand where property prices are outside the reach of first homebuyers. They know the longer they wait to get into the property market the harder it may become, but what can they do? Here enters the concept of rent investing or ‘rent-vesting’, which involves purchasing an investment property in a less expensive area while continuing to rent in the luxury area you wish to live. Some advantages of rent-vesting are:

World Happiness Rating Australia ranks as one of the happiest nations in the world according to the 2016 World Happiness Report.
TOP 10 HAPPIEST COUNTRIES 1. Denmark 2. Switzerland 3. Iceland 4. Norway 5. Finland 6. Canada 7. Netherlands 8. New Zealand 9. Australia 10. Sweden
To come up with the rating the following factors were measured across 126 countries: income per person, absence of corruption, social support, life expectancy, social freedom, and a sense of generosity. Denmark topped the list, closely followed by Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Finland were not far behind. Australia was one of the three non-european countries to make it into the Top 10, below New Zealand and Canada.
TOP 10 LEAST HAPPY COUNTRIES 1. Burundi 2. Syria 3. Togo 4. Afghanistan 5. Benin 6. Rwanda 7. Guinea 8. Liberia 9. Tanzania 10. Madagascar
Not surprising, crisis-ravaged Burundi, Syria and Afghanistan are amongst the most miserable, while overall, countries in Africa are the least happy. Greece which has been suffering severe financial hardship and a crippling migrant crisis has drooped off the Top 10 happiness list. Also missing is the United States which is facing many issues of unhappiness that have been exposed in the recent presidential elections.

Home Loan Help with Joe Vancura Is a holiday house a good investment? There’s nothing better than getting away to one of the many picturesque holiday destinations Australia has to offer. A change of scenery can get you thinking about investing in a holiday house of your own. It’s important to determine whether you want to utilise the property as a holiday home, as an investment, or a combination of both. The most ideal situation is to keep the property available for when you want to use it and rent it out to other holiday makers the rest of the time. This ensures regular income to help pay the mortgage but also allows you to enjoy the property and surrounds. You should take a business-like approach in the search for your holiday home and avoid making any emotional decisions. This is critical if you’re relying on the property for income. As with any property purchase, ensure you research prices in the area and realistically assess your existing financial commitments. The location is particularly important if it’s an investment as this will have an impact on what return you’ll get from holiday letting. Look in areas that attract a lot of holiday makers due to local attractions or proximity to metro areas. Alternatively, there is the option to purchase a unit within a resort development. These properties are leased back to the manager of the resort and offered as holiday accommodation. As the owner, you can usually make use of the property when it suits you. Be sure to check the fine print with these purchases as you may acquire a share of a managed investment scheme, which can include a stake in the total income of the resort as well as expenses incurred by the development. If you can’t find your dream holiday house, it could be worth buying a block of land. Securing a great block gives you the flexibility to design and build the house you want. If the plan is to live in the home when you retire, this option is definitely worth exploring. Bear in mind that to attract holiday makers to your holiday home, you’ll need to fit the property out with furniture and kitchen essentials. Having items like a barbeque, television and laundry facilities will add to the appeal.

A Treat for Mother's Day by Aamod Sharma There's no sweeter way to say "I love you" than with a homemade Mother's Day dish. To give your menu a kick start I have a 10 minute very refreshing salad recipe with a unique touch, and best part is that most of the ingredients are easy to source. Watermelon, Mint and Ginger Salad with Creamed Goats Cheese Ingredients: 300g Diced watermelon 5 stalks Freshly picked mint leaves 30g Meredith Dairy Goats Cheese (Creamed) Ginger Honey Dressing 5mL Fresh grated juiced ginger 30mL Honey 1. 2. 3. 4.
1 Lime (squeezed and juiced) 1 pinch Salt
Mix in all the dressing ingredients and stir vigorously. Toss watermelon dices and mint leaves together in ginger honey dressing. Present in a salad bowl with a few mint leaves and piped goats cheese on top. Serve chilled and fresh.
What may seem like an absurd mixture is actually a harmonious blend of ingredients and textures. This dish illustrates how the seemingly different flavours of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty can be successfully combined. The salad does not take a lot of time to prepare yet it looks appealing, refreshing and elegant.

Eating In or Out Gin Long Restaurant Sawadika means Hello in Thai, which is the very first word any foreigner learns in Thailand. To embrace Thai flavours we went to busy O’ Connell Street in North Adelaide and dined at "Gin Long Canteen" - a very modern and vibrant place with funky neon sign boards, loud music, delightful gimmicks and wooden industrial canteen style seating with mosaic tiled bar. Gin Long’s menu focuses on Asian street food with Thai influences by Chef Kenneth Wong. The drinks menu is compact with a modern twist on the classics drinks are served in bubble tea vacuum sealed cups which refreshes my memoirs of Singapore and Hong Kong. Aamod Sharma is a chef with professional experience working in restaurants and hotels around the world. He lives in Mawson Lakes.

Turtles in the Lake by Nigella One day I was walking around the lake in the sunshine when I saw a pair of bright yellow eyes watching me from the water. I came to a halt and stood there staring back at the moving eyes. Mummy saw that I was mesmerised so she came over to have a look too. She told me it was a turtle. I’d never seen a turtle before. Then we saw a few more eyes. We asked a turtle expert about these little fellows who are the size of a dinner plate and he said they are Murray River Turtles. They are native to Australia and live in freshwater lakes. The turtles spend most of their time in the water and have webbed feet like flippers for swimming. They come out to bask on the rocks in the sun or nest in the reeds and rocks. In the winter they like to snuggle down in the mud. The females lay their eggs in spring and summer in rock crevasses around the lake and they can lay up to 2 lots of eggs with 15-30 babies each time. That’s a lot of babies to look after! But then there are a lot of animals who eat turtle eggs and the baby hatchlings, including cats, rats, birds and foxes (and we have a lot of foxes in Mawson Lakes at night time), so the survival rate is rather low. Turtles live on water plants, snails, insects and bugs and best of all they clean up the dead fish and other rotting stuff in the lake. If you see one take a look, but be careful not to harm them. We don’t want to add dogs to their list of predators - not in Mawson Lakes at least.

Pet Care with Dr Sarah PETS CAN'T OPEN FRIDGES Well most of them can't. This means your average dog or cat will only eat what you give them! Obesity is a major problem in today's pets, as they generally have a less active/indoor lifestyle and have trained their owners/slaves to feed them on demand. The "Oh I have to give him/ her something when he/she looks at me like that!" syndrome. A good way for owners to assess their pets weight is to GENTLY run their index finger along the side of their pet's chest from head to tail. If you can feel the ribs bump-bump-bump under your finger as you do this then their weight is good. If you have to push in to feel the ribs then weight loss is needed.
