Celebrating a Centenary Early one morning when I was out walking with Nigella, a woman in a car pulled up and hurried towards me saying, "I just want to tell you how much I enjoy the magazine. I read every word - Linda and Grace pla nning the concert even the ads. If your’e not in Mawson Lakes Living, you’re not on the map!"
The courtyard in the University will sparkle with fairy lights and the surrounding space will have a selection of quality food vendors. Free ice creams and free pancakes will be a treat for all.
It's encouragement like this that keeps the magazine coming month after month. And now we publish our 100th Issue. What a milestone!
Please like us on facebook and share the occasion with others far and wide. I look forward to seeing you there.
To mark the occasion and to thank all the people in Mawson Lakes who contribute, support, help and encourage the magazine team, I'm throwing a thank you party - a Centenary Celebration - and everyone is invited. (See back cover).
Linda Vining
The stage will be set for a 30-member band, and the beautiful voice of opera star Grace Bawden will fill the air. It will be a night to remember so invite your friends, book your tickets and sit back and enjoy. Gates open at 5pm so come early and get a good posie on the lawn. Wet or fine the show goes on. Tickets are available online, via email to the MLL office, or at our stall at Dog's Day Out.
Editor, Mawson Lakes Living Living Legend, City of Salisbury
Grace is the young classical-crossover soprano that everyone is talking about. She is presently touring with Co-Opera. For the concert at Mawson Lakes she has prepared a breathtaking repertoire including best-loved arias and music from Phantom of the Opera, The King and I and other treasures from Broadway and modern culture. Alongside Grace will be the vibrant Salisbury City Band conducted by Adrienne Meikle. Together they will thrill you with a sparkling night of moving entertainment.

Local talent exposed What a newsy magazine. However do you find so much quality local stuff each month? I wait with anticipation to see the beautiful covers. I notice that the dentist (Peter Bertossa) is trying his hand at photography. Loved his heart-warming story on Cambodia. It’s good the way the magazine gives local people a place to show their talents and interests. - Trent Snape Marriage goldmine My lawyer friends are very excited about same-sex marriage and will vote for it because they see it as a boon to business, especially when heterosexual marriage is a fading market. Same-sex marriage means more divorce, more wrangling over property, more disputes over possessions, the kids and the pets, and nice incomes from pursuing cheating partners. It’s a goldmine. - Chris Anderson Insufficient parking at rail station Since mid-July the overflow parking area at Mawson Lakes interchange has been closed off. There's no alternative parking in the surrounding area. As a Shoalhaven resident it takes me almost 1/2 hour to walk to the station (I am in my 70s). I do a volunteer job at the State Library on a Tuesday so need to get to town. Am I now supposed to incur a parking fine for parking in a 2-hour spot on the street? My council rates for 2015/16 have increased; is it too much to expect parking at ML interchange? Also closed for some years is a gravel parking area on Metro Parade. - Furious and frustrated resident Ed: MLL looked into this and here is the response from the City of Salisbury CEO. The State Government is responsible for providing sufficient parking around interchanges. The sealed parking area next to the station belongs to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure. Contact Susan Close our local State Member about this issue (Ph 8241 0300). The gravel car park used for overflow was always private land awaiting development and that is now proceeding. Up till now the owner kindly let commuters park there.

Coming to SA We are from the UK, travelling in Australia and thinking of making South Australia our home. Mawson Lakes Living has been influential in helping us make that choice. We like the look and feel of the suburb so will get in touch with the real estate agent in the magazine. See you at the Twilight Concert - Gabi, Great Ocean Road, Victoria. Word fashion I live outside Mawson Lakes but often find myself in the community for appointments, catching up with a friend or shopping and always pick up an issue of Mawson Lakes Living. I noticed in Issue 97 July 2015, Word Fashion, the word ‘sanger’ was said to be slang for sausage when actually it means ‘sandwich’. Just another piece of trivia! - Moira Giacopini Outdoor community gym Mawson Lakes is a perfect place for an outdoor calisthenic gym for fitness training for local people. Not a commercial gym but a community gym with parallel bars, loops, dips and poles etc. I’m going to talk to Council about it and if you’d like to support this idea give me a call on 0403 708 856. - Michael

Congratulations on the 100th issue of Mawson Lakes Living. Linda's labour of love has made an enormous contribution to building our diverse Mawson Lakes community. MLL informs, challenges, connects and brings people together in a myriad of ways sometimes planned, sometimes by chance. I look forward to the next 100!

Ring returned On a bus trip to the city I lost a gold diamond ring. Just over four weeks later I caught the bus again from the same stop on Mawson Lakes Boulevard and I noticed a faded message taped to the top of the rubbish bin. "Found Ring". After several text messages my ring was returned by a young man and his partner. We hear a lot of negative things about young people so I was inspired to meet this honest and thoughtful young couple. - Kath Henderson, Trinity Green.
Plastic bag swindle To protect the environment the SA Government banned plastic bags. A bold initiative, only now we STILL use plastic bags but we have to PAY for them. I stood in a queue at ML recently and observed that only one person out of 5 had her own bags (me). The 4 in front bought bags to transport their groceries. Regrettably, a good idea gone wrong. Roslyn Barrand
Perfume bottles Does anyone collect perfume bottles? I have a lot of empty perfume bottles, too beautiful to throw away. - Julie Nigella makes my day I just live for Nigella’s column each month. Makes my day when the magazine arrives in our letterbox. - Darryl, Bella’s dad.
Poor introduction My friends and I attended the opening of Writers' Festival at Mawson Lakes to hear Julia Gillard talk about her political autobiography. The theatre was packed but we were sorely embarrassed by the fawning, childish and self-centred introduction the former Prime Minister received from a Council employee who acted as the emcee. Surely Salisbury Council has a more erudite spokesperson who knows how to present a Distinguished Guest to an Intelligent Audience.- Visiting authors

Business Developing unmanned vessels Dangerous, dirty and dull work at sea could soon be a thing of the past when unmanned navy vessels being develop by Saab at Mawson Lakes come into operation. Work such as clearing sea mines, protecting oil rigs, hazardous search and rescue operations, submarine warfare, sea piracy detection, scouring rivers and delivering supplies, are all part of the duties that could be outsourced to unmanned vehicles. Dr Derek Rogers is the Programme and Engingeering Manager at Saab in South Australia, which is located in Technology Park. His team has been working on developing unmanned surface vehicles (USV) for just under two years and has made great progress in this time. "The biggest challenge comes from the complexity of the oceans," said Dr Rogers. "Electronics, salt water, humidity and heaving seas do not mix well. Other considerations are space and weight so we have to design electronic systems that are rugged, small and light to fit various types of boats that are suited to different operational missions." Preventing USV from colliding with other vehicles is also a major consideration and involves research using radars, lasers, sonar optical and marine Automatic Identification Systems. Similarly, the control station, which may be located on the shore, a mother ship or an oil rig must be lightweight, compact and portable,

and in the case of defence, integrate with naval systems, which Saab specialises in. Saab has five offices in Australia, and its only South Australian facility and Head Office is at Mawson Lakes. The company develops solutions for defence, security, civil aviation and traffic management, all built around computer-based command and control. "Unmanned surface vehicles are an emerging technology within a developing market and we use such advances to remove our armed servicemen and women from harm’s way," said Dr Rogers. He said that Saab’s global centre of excellence in autonomous vessels is well placed in Mawson Lakes. The location is central to the rest of Adelaide, to the military services and to the universities. And for the 300 staff, Mawson Lakes offers a calm and beautiful environment where people can go walking along the quiet pathways and around the lakes to think, reflect and relax. Ed

The pleasure and the pain of being a Prime Minister When former Prime Minister Julia Gillard spoke at the Mawson Centre about her book My Story she told a packed audience that when she was in government people constantly asked her how she did it and why she did it? She wrote her book to explain these two basic questions.
It took her just 6 weeks to write the big manuscript. She toiled every day, all day, because she said she wanted to record her memories with clarity while her recollections were sharp. "I wanted to write with truth and candour, to be sure the book was crisp, so I wrote quickly, then edited slowly." "My book is a story about resilience and coping strategies and although it applies to my three years as PM (2010-2013) I believe it applies to others in stressful occupations as well, in that you need three things to survive - a strong sense of self, people around you who care for you and talk truthfully, and a crystal clear vision of why you are in the job."
Author Julia Gillard signing her book at the Mawson Centre.
Tel: 8344 0000
"For me the reason for being in politics stems from my core belief in the power of education to transform a nation, so I put a lot of effort into educational reform to achieve greater opportunity and equity," she explained.

She misses the intensity of business and the power to make change; but at the same time there is relief from the relentless battles, the media microscope and the gruelling pace of political affairs. "It was a bitter/sweet time," she recalls. "But it’s not until you stop that you realise the enormous pressure you were under and the cost of public life." Listening to Julia Gillard at the Maws on Centre: Cr Steve White, Christine Davidson, Patricia Spry and Janet Coolen.
As for regrets, Ms Gillard who now simply calls herself an author, said she misses her colleagues and friends from the political world including her staff, and the police who protected her day-in, day-out.
Gillard’s book was the highest selling political biography in 2014. Asked if she would write another book she said "Maybe, but first I want to refresh myself, do some new reading and new thinking." Ed

Research - Looking down desert cracks Looking out across the Gibber Plains, Helen Waudby, a research student at UniSA Mawson Lakes, wondered how small animals survive in arid lands, particularly when the land is grazed. Where do they seek shelter in the sweltering heat and how do they find food? For three years Helen examined cracks in the deserts of SA to see how animals lived there. The photograph to the right of her downloading data from a weather station in the Gibber Desert was a finalist in the UniSA's Images of Research photographic competition.
Wildlife ecologist and Helen’s university supervisor Dr Topa Petit is passionate about the relationship between plants and animals. "Everything is intertwined and the relationship between plants and animals must be understood if we are to conserve our ecosystems." She said the current mass extinction of native plants and animals that is unravelling millions of years of evolution is due to human activities. "If we create artificial imbalances in nature through poor management of the land we are heading for disaster."
A researcher downloading data from a weather station in the South Australian outback.
Australia supports the largest area of managed grazing land in the world and ecologists are concerned that grazing-induced degradation (land clearing, cattle tramping) can lead to the decline of desert-dwelling mammals and reptiles. "We need to understand the nature of this biodiversity so we can argue for and support a more sustainable industry that works with nature, rather than against it," said Dr Petit. Ed Dr Petit is a senior lecturer in Wildlife Ecology in the School of Natural and Built Environments at the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes. Contact sophie.petit@unisa.edu.au

Helen found that the cracks are filled with biodiversity where animals such as native mice, geckos, dragon lizards and invertebrates can find a relatively constant microclimate where they can take refuge from weather extremes and predators.

What is the value of a homemaker and carer of children? In property settlements following the breakdown of relationships the court will divide the property in accordance with (amongst other things) the contributions made by each of the parties to the relationship and to matrimonial property they have acquired. Clients often come to me with a view that a wife who is a home-maker and child-carer during the relationship makes little or no contribution to the matrimonial property. Not so! In the recent case of Mr and Mrs Lane, the Judge found that during a sixteen year marriage, the wife’s contribution as home-maker and child-carer of their two children, together with other factors, was virtually equal to the husband’s financial contribution of an annual salary of $560,000. His Honour Judge Brown said that the marriage was "one of equals" in that each took on their respective roles and combined their respective contributions into the household and because of this and the relatively long marriage involving children, the property should be split between them on a 50/50 basis. So, the value of the non-financial contribution made by the wife who kept the home and cared for the children was recognized as equal to the financial contributions by the husband. If you need advice about a separation and a property settlement come and see us on the basis of a free first interview and we can work out the value of your contribution to the matrimonial property.

Who Are You? by Emily Doan Vivid illustrations using bright colours and whimsical characters fill the pages of a children’s book written and illustrated by Emily Doan who is a Year 11 student at Endeavour College. "Who Are You?" is a story of adventure and friendship.
Emily with the illustrations said that a work like this takes a lot of talent and drive. "Emily has a good eye for detail and children love this. A writer has to be a good storyteller and know how to push the story along."
At the book launch in the school library last month Emily said she has always dreamed of becoming a published author. Now after three years of work, the book is ready for sale.
"Imagination is still very much alive in young people," said Emily who has been visiting primary schools to read her book and interact with her intended audience. The book is self published and self funded. It is available from the school for $15. Ed

Sudoko Puzzle Solution on page 30 Sudoku is an easy to learn, logic-based puzzle. Even though numbers are commonly used, it is not maths based. It is possible to make and solve a Sudoku puzzle with just letters or symbols. A Sudoku puzzle consists of 81 cells which are divided into nine columns, rows and regions. The word Sudoku is short for Su-ji wa dokushin ni kagiru which means "the numbers must be single". How to play The task is to place the numbers from 1 to 9 into the empty cells in such a way that in every row, column and 3×3 region each number appears only once.

Central Australia Should SA merge with NT? With a fast growing economy, low unemployment rate and proximity to Asian markets, the Top End has a lot of investment potential and it is keen to change its status to a State of Australia rather than a Territory. But other states question if the Northern Territory has a big enough population to become an independent state even if it has mining, agriculture, offshore oil and gas and good connections to Asia. This is where South Australia comes into the story. A merger with SA, a state with a struggling economy but many competitive advantages and the critical mass to compete with the eastern states could be a productive option for both. The two jurisdictions already share infrastructure and work closely together in areas such as tourism, the management of remote communities and resource management. Supporters argue that a merger could take both to the next level. It wouldn’t be an easy merger. It would mean that respective governments of SA and NT would need to agree on laws, road rules, regulations to industry and safety standards, cultural differences and how a combined parliament would operate. Inevitably, Adelaide would be the centre of political power and Darwin would be the gateway to trade. The Northern Territory has internal selfgovernment but it does not have full legislative independence which means the Federal Government can overturn any legislation passed by the Territory, as it did with the voluntary euthanasia laws. The NT held a referendum in 1998 to push for statehood but the proposal was defeated. Is it time to open the topic again and explore a merger? Would South Australians be willing to accept a broadening of it’s empire. And what would the new super-state be called? How does Central Australia sound? Tell us what you think. Ed 20

Programs for Kids At CrossFit 5000 we offer a weekly kids class. CrossFit Kids is meant to be BIG fun for ages 7-12, Broad-Inclusive-General fun. Fun means we provide an active alternative to sedentary pursuits, which means less childhood obesity and all-around better health for our children. We play games, teach nutrition and get the kids moving. Programs for Teens We offer a teens class twice a week for ages 13-17. CrossFit Teens emphasises good movement throughout adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement. Our Kids and Teens program is fast becoming our most popular program. Parents are starting to see the huge changes in confidence, sports performance, school results and the general wellbeing of their children.

Pledger Wetlands gets a sign post Running alongside the railway line in Mawson Lakes is a stretch of water and parkland known as the Pledger Wetlands. This is a City of Salisbury Reserve and a recent signpost on Brookside Drive now clearly identifies the area. A large part of the stretch is maintained by the Mawson Lakes community environment group called ‘Friends of the Pledger Wetlands’. Over 30 residents have been active this year undertaking planting of seedlings, mulching and weed control. Local community and school groups have also helped – the Guides group under the leadership of Kerry Henderson has been to work sessions and also the Cub Scouts under the leadership of Sarah Jones.

Staff from Endeavour College have given generously of their time and Year 9 students have also made a valuable contribution. The Wetlands is a tranquil, off-road place to walk, jog and cycle. If you would like to join the Friends and lend a hand for a couple of hours once a month please contact Coordinator Colin Taylor on 0427 616 814 or at colintaylor_7@ bigpond.com or just come and find us on the last Sunday of the month from 9.30am. Brian Pledger was the Biodiversity Officer for the City of Salisbury. He was instrumental in managing the open areas of Mawson Lakes in the early days of the development. Tragically Brian was killed three years ago in a road accident in the Barossa Valley whilst walking his dogs. - Colin Taylor

Start a Memory Bank Can you think of 10 lovely memories from the past year? What about 50 memories? Memories are fragile and incredibly precious and sometimes they are all we have left in life. As the years go by we forget more and more, so start a memory bank and try writing down a nice thing each day. That would add up to 365 memories in one year. An online memoir writing program Histography. com by Michael McQueen inspires people to record their history. He gives five reasons why you should write down your memories: 1. Do it for the kids. Record your stories for the next generation. They will really appreciate having written accounts of your life and your loved ones who are their relatives. It will help them understand family connections. 2. Do it for yourself. We tend to remember the tough times in our life (loss, tragedy, disaster)
more vividly than the good times so write down the happy memories and how you felt at the time, then when life gets tough you can look back on the good times. 3. Stop memory playing tricks on you. False memory occurs with time and can cloud the truth so write it down as it happens. Our brains are wired to fill in the gaps so when we don’t remember all the details our brains can trick us with “fake memory”. 4. Train your brain. Storytelling strengthens your memory. By writing things down we tend to have an easier time recalling information. Tie events, feelings people and circumstances into your narrative and be sure to record the date it happened. 5. Learn about yourself. Writing things down gives you insight into who you are and why you did things and how your past has shaped the person you are today. Ed

A Dog's Plea
by Nigella I was waiting for my owner outside a cafe when I saw this poster on the wall written from a dog to its owner. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for loving kindness than mine.
LL ER M NT I PR
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I might lick your hand between blows, patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you wish me to learn. I live to please you. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ears.

Kid's Corner - Making Music in Mawson Lakes This month in Mawson Lakes we are making music at our Centenary Celebration. (See the back page for details about our Twilight Concert and ask Mum and Dad to go online to www.mawsonlakesliving.info to book. Tickets for children are just $5) You can make music yourself these school holidays by getting crafty and creating your own musical instruments. Here are some easy ideas to get you started: •
Tape drinking straws together and trim on an angle for a super quick pan pipe! Blow gently across the flat end and listen to the different notes.
•
Fill empty and dry water bottles or similar with dried legumes or grains of uncooked rice and shake shake shake!
•
An old Milo tin decorated with markers or stickers makes a great drum. (sorry Mum and Dad!)
•
Stretch elastic bands over a hole cut in a shoebox for a makeshift guitar.
We hope to see you at our twilight concert. Happy music making!
