iWAY HOTEL IS AN HOSPITALITY SPACE LOCATED IN SPAZIO M.I.L., IN SESTO SAN GIOVANNI (MILAN) AND THE HYPOTHETICAL CLIENT OF THE PROJECT IS LONELY PLANET. SPACE IS INTENDED TO A SPECIFIC TARGET, THE FLASHPACKERS, A NEW TYPE OF HANDY TRAVELERS AND WORKERS WITH NO MUCH TIME AVAILABLE. iWAY HOTEL HAS 21 THEMED ROOMS, AND EACH ONE INSPIRED FROM AN ITALIAN REGION. AN ITALIAN CUISINE RESTAURANT WITH THE SAME IDEA IS LOCATED IN THE SAME STRUCTURE, AND ALSO A COWORKING AND RELAXING AREA. MOREOVER, IN ANOTHER PART OF THE BUILDING, THERE ARE THE LONELY PLANET’S OFFICES, AN ADVISORY SERVICE AND CERTIFIED TOURIST GUIDES’ SCHOOL. THE RESULT IS AN HYBRID SPACE BETWEEN AN HOSPITALITY PLACE AND A WORKPLACE. THE HOTEL ROOMS ARE CONTAINED IN PARALLELEPIPEDS WITH DIFFERENT HEIGHTS, LAID OUT IN SPACE APPARENTLY IN A MESSY WAY: IN THIS MANNER SEVERAL POSSIBLE PATHS TO REACH THE ROOM HAVE BEEN CREATED, GIVING THE FEELING OF UNDERTAKING A NEW “TRAVEL IN THE TRAVEL”. TO ORIENT YOURSELF IN THE PARALLELEPIPEDS AREA, AS WELL AS THE ROOMS, AN APPLICATION IS DESIGNED AND, AS AN ALTERNATIVE, A PAPER GUIDEBOOK INSPIRED FROM THE LONELY PLANET ONES.

FOLLOWING THE URBAN ANALYSIS OF THE AREA IN WHICH IS SITUATED VIA PAOLO SARPI, AS WELL AS THE CHINATOWN OF MILAN, AND OF THE FLUXES OF PEOPLE THAT MAINLY TRAVERSE IT IN THE DIFFERENT HOURS, IT WAS ESTABLISHED THE IDEAL TARGET: THE WORKERS. DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS WITH THE COMMON AIM TO SPEED AND TO GIVE THE HOME COMFORT TO THE CUSTOMER WERE DESIGNED. THE RESULT IS A SPACE WITH THREE DIFFERENT SERVICES MANAGED ENTIRELY BY AN APP, TO ACCELERATE FURTHER THE USER: THE PICK&GO, A FOOD AND BEVERAGE TAKEAWAY IN WHICH YOU CAN BUY PRODUCTS COMING FROM THE SHOPS OF THE STREET, THE WASH&GO, ‘PUBLIC-PRIVATE’ BATHROOMS WITH ALL THE NEEDS TO FRESHEN UP AND THE LEAVE&GO, DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOCKERS FOR THE LUGGAGE STORAGE, FOR THE PACKAGE DELIVERY AND REFRIGERATED FOR THE GROCERY SHOPPING. THE DEVELOPED CONCEPT IS BASED ON SPEED AND DYNAMISM, AND IT WAS APPLIED IN THE SPACE THROUGH THE USE OF CURVED AND FLUID SHAPES AND HORIZONTAL LINES, BEEING INSPIRED ABOVE ALL FROM THE BOLIDISM AND STREAMLINE MOVEMENTS. THE COLORS USED IN ALL THE SPACE ARE MAINLY WHITE, BLACK AND YELLOW, WHICH ARE VERY ATTRACTIVE, USED ALSO IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AND MOTORCYCLE SECTOR FROM WHICH INSPIRATION WAS TAKEN.

HALLWAY, CENTRAL PART OF THE SPACE, IN WHICH THERE IS A BIG SITTING, ENTIRELY MADE IN EXPANDED POLYURETHANE, USABLE WHILE WAITING THE SERVICES’ AVAILABILITY.
LOCKERS ARE LOCATED IN THE HALLWAY, NEAR THE SPACE’S WAY OUT. COMPLETELY BLACK, NOT TO BREAK THE WALL CONTINUITY, THE LOCKERS ARE MANAGED BY A CENTRAL SOFTWARE.

BATHROOMS, IN WHICH SOME STREEPS OF THE EXTERNAL HALLWAY SEEM TO ENTER INSIDE TO SHAPE THE FURNITURE: FROM THE BENCH, TO THE WASH-BASIN, TO DIFFERENT CONTAINER SHELVES.

THE PROJECT AREA, TORRE GALFA, IS A SKYSCRAPER OF 27 FLOORS BUILT IN MILAN IN 1959. THE PROJECT GOAL WAS TO FIT THE HUMAN BODY ALONG WITH THE TOWER. ANALYZING THE 13TH, 14TH E 15TH FLOORS WE TOOK INSPIRATION FROM THE SPINAL COLUMN, THE STRUCTURAL PART OF THE HUMAN BODY: THE MOVEMENTS KEY POINT. IT GIVES THE VERTICALITY THAT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO STAY ERECT, IN EQUILIBRIUM AND TO MOVE. EVERY ACTIVITY DONE BY HUMANS IS POSSIBLE THANKS TO THE BACK. STARTING FROM THIS CONCEPT A SPACE WHICH STIMULATES THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WAS CREATED. SPACE WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE MAIN AREAS IN WHICH IS POSSIBLE TO DO EXERCICES THAT STIMULATE THE BACK AND ITS MUSCLES, LIKE A CLIMBING WALL, A PARTICULAR GYM, AERIAL SILKS AND A BIG ROPE TO CLIMB AND TO GO IN THE UPPER FLOORS AND ON THE SUSPENDED BRIDGE. THE LATTER IS A REFERENCE TO THE PROJECT CONCEPT, STIMULATING THE PEOPLE EQUILIBRIUM THAT WALKS THROUGH IT. THE CENTRAL AREA IS COMMITTED TO RELAX AND MEDITATION AND IS AN EXPLICIT REFERENCE TO THE JENGA GAME, WHICH IS BASED ON JOINTS, EXACTLY LIKE THE VERTEBRAE, AND IS A VALID DEMONSTRATION OF BALANCE AND STATICS CONCEPTS. EVERY ELEMENT IN THE PROJECT FOLLOWS VERTICAL LINES ALLOWING TO GO FROM THE FIRST TO THE THIRD FLOOR IN A DYNAMIC WAY.

ADRENALINE IS A HORMONE RELEASED BY THE BODY IN RESPONSE TO A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT TRIGGERS A PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF THE BODY. THE CONCEPT OF THE PROJECT IS THE ADRENALINE RUSH, A PHYSICAL MECHANISM OF HUMAN BODY THAT APPEARS IN SPECIFIC SITUATIONS. IN THESE SITUATIONS SENSES ARE AMPLIFIED OR INHIBITED, THE MUSCLE PERFORMANCE IMPROVES AND FOCUS INCREASES. IN TERMS OF SHAPE THE PROJECT IS DEVELOPED AS A RETICULUM OF NEURONS-LIKE SPACES IN WHICH THE ACTIVITY HAPPENS AND A NET INSPIRED BY DENDRITES WITH THE FUNCTION CONNECTS ALL THE SPACES. IN THE SPACE A DIRECT PROCESS TO MAKE PEOPLE “FELL THE RUSH” IS ADOPTED. THEY WILL EXPERIENCE EFFECTIVELY THE PHYSIOLOGIC RESPONSE OF THE BODY TO THE HORMONE, THROUGHOUT FOUR DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES IN WHICH THE ADRENALINE UNLEASHED IS PROMPTED: THE HEIGHT AND THE VOID, THAT YOU CAL FEEL THROUGH A JUMP, CAUSED BY ANGER, THE PHYSICAL FIGHT, DURING A COMPETITION, REPRODUCED IN A RACE, CAUSED BY FEAR, REPRODUCED IN THIS CASE AS A LABYRINTH. THE PROJECT IDEA IS TO RENDER THE SPIKES IN THE MOMENT WHEN AN EXTERNAL SIGNAL IS SENT TROUGH AN INSTALLATION IN WHICH IS PROPORTIONALLY CREATED LIGHT, IN RELATION WITH THE ADRENALINE UNLEASHED DURING THE EXPERIENCE.

TAR SANDS ARE A MIX OF CLAY, SAND, WATER AND BITUMEN FROM WHICH A VISCOUS MATERIAL IS EXTRACTED. THEY HAVE A MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT COMPARED TO THE MOST COMMON HYDROCARBON, BOTH IN THE EXTRACTION PHASE AND IN THE FURTHER STAGES OF TRANSPORTATION AND REFINING, SINCE A HUGE QUANTITY OF ENERGY AND WATER IS REQUIRED. HOWEVER, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF THIS PROCESS IS THAT ONLY HUMAN ACTION MAKES THIS MATERIAL TOXIC. THEREFORE, THE INSTALLATION IS AIMED AT ENHANCING THE DUALISM OF TAR SANDS IN RESPECT OF THEIR NATURAL FEATURE AND THE POLLUTING CHANGEOVER CAUSED BY MAN. A BIG EXPANSE OF NATURAL SAND GETS DESTROYED BY PEOPLE CROSSING THE INSTALLATION BECAUSE OF A BLACK FLUID THAT COMES UP FROM THE GROND AS SOMEONE STEPS ON IT. THIS FLUID WILL DAY BY DAY TRANSFORM THE SAND INTO A BLACK MUDDY MATERIAL, TAKING OVER THE WHOLE SPACE. THE METAPHOR IS THE IDEA THAT MAN IS DESTROYING HIMSELF WITH HIS OWN PATHS. MOREOVER, WHO STEPS ON THE INSTALLATION WILL TAKE HIS FOOTPRINTS AROUND THE CITY, IN THIS WAY CREATING POLLUTION AND DIRTYING THE CITY. IN THIS SENSE, THE PAINTING USED TO CREATE THIS KIND OF OIL EXTRACTION EFFECT, COMING FROM THE GROUND, IS A SPECIAL MATERIAL ABLE TO CATCH THE POLLUTION IN THE AIR LIKE A REAL GREEN AREA.

SCALO FARINI IS AN OLD RAIL YARD OF ABOUT 600SM IN SIZE LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY OF MILAN. STARTING FROM THE CONCEPT OF THE HAND, WHICH IS ABLE TO CONNECT AND TO TOUCH, WE DESIGNED THREE DIFFERENT PATHS THAT BRING THE COSTUMERS FROM THE ENTRANCES TO THE CENTRAL BUILDING. THE THREE PATHS’ SHAPE IS GIVEN BY THE PALM LINES OF THE HANDS DIRECTION: LIFE LINE, HEART LINE AND BRAIN LINE, AND THE ACTIVITIES PLACED ON THEM TAKE REFERENCE FROM THESE MEANINGS. THE “UN-TOUCHED” CONCEPT IS DEVELELOPED LEAVING THE EXISTING ELEMENTS ON THEIR PLACE AND OVERLAPPING NEW DESIGNED ONES, IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE MEMORY OF THE PLACE. THIS CONCEPT IS REINFORCED WITH THE MATERIALS USED, FOR EXAMPLE, THE METALLIC GRID WHICH ENABLES THE CUSTOMER TO LOOK BELOW AND SEE WHAT WAS ALREADY EXISTING THERE. ANOTHER FOCUS OF THE PROJECT ARE THE STRUCTURES DISPOSED NEAR THE MAIN BUILDING: THEY ARE INSPIRED BY THE FRAGMENTS CREATED BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE TRAIN LOOKING OUTSIDE THE WINDOW. THE SHAPE IS DEVELOPED STARTING FROM THE CONTAINERS’ SHAPE. INSIDE THE STRUCTURES THERE ARE DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES, WITH DIFFERENT FURNITURE AND MATERIALS TO RESPONSE TO DIFFERENT NEEDS.

THE ASSIGNED BRAND IS L’OPIFICIO SERICO FIORENTINO, A COMPANY THAT PRODUCES FABRICS AND CUSTOMIZED PRODUCTS. TO ENHANCE THEIR PRODUCTS IN THE EXHIBITION SPACE, THE FOCUS IS ON TWO MAIN POINTS: EXALTING THE TEXTILES, MADE WITH NATURAL FIBER AND WITH A GREAT RANGE OF DIFFERENT TEXTURES AND COHERENCE BETWEEN THESE, AND THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS: THE PRODUCTION KNOW-HOW AND DESIGN ARE CORE COMPETENCIES OF THE COMPANY. THE FIRST POINT HAS BEEN PUT IN EVIDENCE THROUGH THE LIGHTS, WHICH CHANGE THEIR COLOUR TEMPERATURE AND TO HIGHLIGHT THE SECOND ONE A SOUNDTRACK HAS BEEN MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PROJECT. FROM OUTSIDE THE CUSTOMER COULD PERCEIVE THAT SPACE IS ABOUT TEXTILE BECAUSE SOME DISORDERED FILAMENTS GO INSIDE THE CUBE IN WHICH, THROUGH AN IDEAL LOOM ARE REORDERED AND PLACED IN A PARALLEL WAY, AND PROGRESSIVELY THEY BECOME FABRICS FIXED ON PANELS. IN THIS WAY THE FABRIC’S PRODUCTION PROCESS IS IDEALLY REPRESENTED ON THE TWO OPPOSITE WALLS. INDEED, IN THE OPPOSITE CORNER OF THE ENTRANCE, THE TEXTILE PANELS SWARM THE ENTIRE WALL AND CEILING. THE USER CAN TAKE AND ATTACH THEM ON THE WIREFRAME STRUCTURES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CUBE, TO UNDERSTAND BETTER HOW ALL THE COLLECTIONS COULD MATCH BETWEEN THEM.
