A person ND loves Music, respects Natura and lives enjoying or creating every day Culture influenced by the first two as well as our contents. We would like to thank Tulum, and with Tulum we intend the people, workers, clients and friends that since we started talking about our project have helped us, supporter and the result is the magazine you have in your hands. This feeling is the mission he had in 2005 when he began to move the first steps of this project in Ibiza and Formentera. Una persona ND ama la Musica, respecta la Natura y vive disfrutando o creando cada dia Cultura influenzado por las primeras dos asi como nuestro contenidos. Querriamos agradecer Tulum, y con Tulum intendemos las personas, los trabajadores, clientes y amigos que desde que hemos empezados de hablar de nuestro proyecto nos han ayudado, suportardo y el resultado es la revista que tienes entre tus manos. Esta sensacion es la Misma que he tenido en el 2005 cuando empezé a mover los primeros pasos de este proyecto en Ibiza y Formentera. When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences?

I was just 12 when I started buying records and by 14 I had my own Technics and a mixer. I would spend every day after school on the decks teaching myself how to mix. I spent any spare time at weekends in record shops and listening to pirate radio stations and by 16 I was playing the warm up slot in a local club. My taste was always quite eclectic; playing acid house, breakbeat and techno but at the same time I was collecting soul, funk and jazz.

I was always quite confident and not afraid to put myself in situations above my years or experience. It took me a long time to gather skills and technique as a dj but I was committed and I knew that I loved everything about electronic music. Having good friends around me helped me really believe in myself and I simply worked hard at it until one day I suddenly realised that I had ‘something’. It then took another few years to really understand my craft and my style and to create something that was both personal to me and very real.

For sure setting up Crosstown Rebels was a key factor in giving myself a platform and discovering other artists that went on to become huge stars helped also

Tenía solo 12 años cuando comencé a comprar discos y para los 14 tenía mi propio Technics y un mezclador. Pasaría todos los días después de la escuela entrenandome cómo mezclar. Pasaba el tiempo librede todos los fines de semana en tiendas de discos y escuchando estaciones de radio piratas y a los 16 años estaba pinchando el worm up en un club local. Mi gusto siempre fue bastante ecléctico; tocaba acid house, breakbeat y techno pero al mismo tiempo coleccionaba soul, funk y jazz.

Siempre tuve mucha confianza y no tuve miedo de ponerme en situaciones superiores a mis años o experiencia. Me tomó mucho tiempo reunir habilidades y técnicas como DJ, pero estaba comprometido y sabía que me encantaba todo sobre la música electrónica. Tener buenos amigos a mi alrededor me ayudó a creer realmente en mí mismo y simplemente trabajé duro hasta que un día me di cuenta de repente de que tenía “algo”. Luego me tomó otros años entender realmente mi estilo, y crear algo que fuera personal y muy real para mí .

I guess, but there was a time when people saw me as a label guy as opposed to an artist. Probably because I didn’t start producing my own music for some time. I think the biggest impact came to me during a period when I started playing outdoor spaces as opposed to inside clubs. This co-incided around a time about 15 years ago that I was experimenting with psychedelics to try and expand my mind and my creative vision.

How would you describe the relationship between your choices / selections within a DJ set and the expectations of the audience? Do you find yourself playing for specific audiences or do you deviate from this idea?

this is true to an extent but more I find that it is more important to just be yourself and play from the heart. You are being booked by the promoter because you are you… it took me a long time to become the artist I knew I was capable of being and so I figured that as my music is quite wide and open and that you can never second guess which way I will turn next, then I need to present that also in live situations. I always wanted to be the kind of artist that people would want to go see, hear and dance to… even if they were not 100% certain what I was going to do, and in many ways I think I’ve achieved that.

Tulum is described as an amazing place where art and freedom are combined, Can you describe your approach to art and being an artist? Where does Day Zero fit into this?

Do you feel like there is a connection between Ibiza and Tulum? What are the main similarities and differences?

Playing by ancient Mayan temples, in jungles with natural Cenote cities running beneath… what could be better? In Tulum you see the universe so clearly at night and once morning arrives and the air is filled with Copal, I have a sense of home, of wonderment, of beauty and I feel connected. Its hard running around the world 4 nights of every week of the year, it becomes difficult to remind yourself of how incredible nature is and how in the big scheme of things we are simply a minor detail. In Tulum, I am reminded to forget my ego and my problems and to play music for amazing people all being connected together at this unique and special experience that we create, Day Zero.

For me the connection is wider than these two places, there is a tribe of people that love partying and will travel to the best possible places on earth to experience that. These places generally have a spiritual connection, as in Tulum, Burning Man and Ibiza for example; there is a shared sense of wonder and awe at how good certain party situations can

Pinchando en los antiguos templos mayas, en selvas con ciudades naturales de cenotes que se ejecutan debajo... ¿qué podría ser mejor? En Tulum se ve el universo tan claramente por la noche y una vez que llega la mañana y el aire se llena, tengo una sensación de hogar, de asombro, de belleza y me siento conectado. Es difícil recorrer el mundo 4 noches de cada semana del año, se hace difícil recordar lo increíble que es la naturaleza y cómo, en el gran esquema de las cosas, somos simplemente un detalle menor. We’re so self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save the planet...where do you stand regarding this matter? How does sustainability fit into the Day Zero ethos?

Its a new dawn and a new day so I will treat it as such and attempt to capture the moment - there is no grand plan.

Of course as a dj you are always working and selecting from a specific palette of music, the trick is to tell your story in a particular way, finding exactly the right music for the right moment and throw in some real surprises and special “bits” that will live on in the memory of those people around you forever. I tend to pre-decide the exact music I will play as the sun comes up but then I will improvise everything around that.

It is a very important part of Day Zero, particularly because we are creating a festival in a beautiful natural environment where flora, fauna and animals reside. Our location is quite self contained in the jungle which makes it easier for us to protect and preserve however I do wish that some people were more in tune with our efforts to be respectful and minimise any possible harm to the environment. I created a Director of Sustainability job title a while ago and we work closely with conservation groups and activists, doing the best we can to make a difference. We make films about what we do but actually we dont feel we need to shout about it as this is not something we are 18

We all live on this planet and we all need to do our bit to preserve it for our children and future generations and we, as a collective, making Day Zero and Get Lost events, are doing the best we can.

The inspiration to become a photographer for Paola was born between the island of Ibiza to the Jungles of Tulum. Her unique style of photography resulted in her being approached to shoot a campaign for Tulum’s hottest new clothing sensation, “Dirt in the Dust”. Dirt in the Dust is an exclusive costumier, which has encapsulated the ethos of Burning Man and infused it with the ever popular dress up culture of the Rivera Maya.

My self portrait was part of an earlier project on which I was working. I had worn one of my own favourite Bordelle outfits for the shoot. Sometime later Sian saw my pictures and invited me to shoot “Ti Fa”, which was a great experience. My vision is to create an experience of emotions and feelings. Inspiring confidence where every subject is a Goddess and every time I click, I want to see that coming out”.

Sian: “Paola has a way of creating images that have a cinematic, storytelling feel to them yet she manages to maintain a certain sensuality and softness in her work.

Sian: “Curating the sensual side of a passionate and established brand, dedicated to promoting the conscious growth of Art and Culture like Radio Tulum, is essential to us. The styling of the station itself is extremely aspirational and in keeping with our brand ideals, while the gallery upstairs has been as inspiring as it has been successful”.

Paola: “I have always enjoyed photographing strong women and when I was offered the opportunity to work on this campaign I was naturally delighted.

Where are you from?

I am really not sure where I am from, who does these days. We have gone far beyond a geographical location or the word from… The more pertinent question would be where are you off? And then I would answer that the blood of the ancient indian runs through me, and I used to live in NYC and would still consider that I would call it a the city of all cities but I also grew up in Boston and lived in LA and now I live in Tulum, so I am of Tulum at the moment. If one really thinks about it that question is sort of moot since we are all kind of searching for a home but it’s mostly in our hearts anyway. 34

Realmente no estoy seguro de dónde soy, quién lo hace en estos días.Hemos ido mucho más allá de una ubicación geográfica o la palabra de... La pregunta más pertinente sería ¿dónde estás? What do you take care of?

I take care off a lot of things since I am a juggler and a poet but it’s mostly a concept to create something that resonates far beyond what is considered the norm of creativity. I’m a cultural curator,created Radio Tulum and that is what I take care of. We are much more than a radio station. We’ve been calling it a production thinktank. It’s a way of life , a way of existence to remain at the top of the pyramid of progressive culture, history and forefront of now. The headquarter of Radio Tulum is the Radio Tulum hotel. A cultural center in the heart of town where local and international artists gather and where we are facilitating cultural and artistic events since 2016. We officially opened our new location at the Tulum Beach. A cultural hub that is home of an art gallery in collaboration with Siete Arte Contemporaneo, a concept store featuring highly curated international high street slow fashion, and our street level radio booth from which we are broadcasting live. Itʼs a multiverse that constantly evolves. I am also writing a book (2nd edition) called the ‘Small Letter Iʼ working on a screenplay and a play and also in the process of starting a band with my girlfriend Marie Moon who is an artist herself. We are working on a few art projects together beyond the realm of Radio Tulum which is created as an example for the world and then there is the personal stuff that I want to do once Radio Tulum has become an institution.

Me encargo de muchas cosas porque soy malabarista y poeta, pero es principalmente un concepto crear algo que resuene mucho más allá de lo que se considera la norma de la creatividad. Soy un curador cultural, y creé Radio Tulum, eso es lo que tomo cuidado somos mucho más que una estación de radio. Lo hemos estado llamando un grupo de expertos de producción. Es una forma de vida, una forma de existencia para permanecer en la cima de la pirámide de la cultura progresiva, la historia y la vanguardia de ahora. La sede de Radio Tulum es el hotel Radio Tulum. Un centro cultural en el corazón de la ciudad donde se reúnen artistas locales e internacionales y donde estamos facilitando eventos culturales y artísticos desde 2016. Abrimos oficialmente nuestra nueva ubicación en la playa de Tulum. Un centro cultural que es el hogar de una galería de arte en colaboración con Siete Artistas Contemporáneo, una tienda conceptual que presenta una moda internacional yla nuestra cabina de radio a nivel de la calle desde la que transmitimos en directo. Es un multiverso que evoluciona constantemente. También estoy escribiendo un libro (2da edición) llamado ‘Small Letter Iʼ (letra pequeña i) y trabajando en un guión de una obra de teatro y también estoy en el proceso de comenzar una banda con mi novia Marie Moon, que es una artista. Estamos trabajando en algunos proyectos de arte juntos más allá del ámbito de Radio Tulum, me gustaria que se crea como un ejemplo para el mundo y luego están las satisfaciones personales que me gustaria tener una vez que Radio Tulum se haya convertido en una institución.

Yes of course I know ibiza not from being there as much as just all my friends who go there and you guys, but it’s another magical place over run now by progress and commercialization but it still holds its magic and the photos I have seen of the sunsets, its magical and some day I would like to visit but not just as a passer by perhaps to bridge Radio Tulum with Ibiza somehow.

Sí, por supuesto, conozco Ibiza pero no tanto como todos mis amigos que van allí y ustedes. I’m very excited about our event series at Ahau. Each year we curate a group of artists that really resonate with the vibe of the amazing spot on the beach. Starting with our season opener tradition with Eduardo Castillo, myself and the birthday of JP Jupiter. NYE has become something of a legend here at Ahau. It has developed into such a high vibration celebration with a fusion of cultural performance art, incredible dinner on the white sands and a little bit of our Burning Man DNA. The Music this year will be Nico Stojan, Hoomance, and yours truly. This is absolutely one of my favorite gigs to play every year. The vibes are incredible. Then on Jan 3rd we are hosting Abracadabra again with Blond:ish, Parallels, myself, Lunar Disco, and Carlita. Jan 5th escape to the Disco with Kaz James and friends. With everything being so “tulum” musically, this is going to be an epic departure with a night of full disco house. 70’s disco attire encouraged! Then our season closer on January 7th. Jan Blomqvist, Serge Devant and myself bringing it home. This will be an incredible night of music. Plus our sunset sessions. Wow. I am really looking forward to this season!!!

What do you think about the connection between Tulum and Ibiza?

I think they are very distinctly different places. Tulum cannot handle the scale of IBIZA. It is the intimacy of this place that makes it so special.

Abracadabra is a lifestyle once you’re plugged in, you experience life differently. We started it in Tulum thru an evolved party concept, and it’s now evolving into a much bigger project pairing magic, impact and sustainability. The label gives the stage to upcoming artists that fit this mission ;)

Music is a constant evolution for me, there is endless ways to approach it, and i’m exploring that --- there are some beautiful collaborations that happened, you’ll hear about them next month!

We have created a declaration with “Red Tulum Sostenible” to give to Tulum promoters some basic tips for starting on their sustainable journey for Tulum this January. We have also included key contacts for sustainable options in Tulum. We created the guide to save promoters time, so they have no excuse. We need to all take these sustainable actions together, so we can evolve together. We are also organizing an event on Jan 8th (TBC), it will either be a beach clean with Makers Tulum involving other local promoters as well, or a local effort with the Tulum locals who are passionate about sustainability efforts. We will be posting about it on instagram the 1st week of January (Check @byebyeplaticlife instagram for updates).

El lanzamiento estuve Tulum a través de un concepto de fiesta evolucionado, y ahora se está convirtiendo en un proyecto mucho más grande que combina magia, impacto y sostenibilidad. La música es una evolución constante para mí, hay infinitas formas de abordarla, y estoy explorando eso, hay algunas hermosas colaboraciones que sucedieron, ¡escucharán sobre ellas el próximo mes!

Hemos creado una declaración con “Red Tulum Sustenible para dar a los promotores de Tulum algunos consejos básicos para comenzar su viaje sostenible por Tulum este enero.También hemos incluido contactos clave para opciones sostenibles en Tulum. All these bio materials need binders. From my knowledge, it is binded together with HDPE. Yes, HDPE, the synthetic plastic made from fossil fuels, which raises the question of greenwashing on the part of the people behind the material. This material is recyclable as a plastic as well, as long as everyone in the recycling process knows that, and doesn’t mistake it for tree paper. So yes, it uses stone instead of trees to make paper, but it couldn’t do so without a little plastic. Stone material is also photodegradable, but needs sunlight exposure, so in landfill I don’t see this breaking down so easily. I would say, for carbon footprint, “great”, for a truly circular solution --- “the search continues” :)

Todos estos materiales biológicos necesitan aglutinantes. Que yo sepa, está unido con HDPE. Sí, HDPE, el plástico sintético hecho de combustibles fósiles, lo que plantea la cuestión del lavado verde por parte de las personas detrás del material. What type of music are you listening to while you are not playing? A lot of music without kicks, meditation music, mantras, the sound of nature, binaural beats for focus, and a lot of acoustic music and World music for some flavor and culture.

I was conceived in the summer of 1969 in the Balearic Islands on my parents’ honeymoon. I first went to Ibiza as a young man in 1996. I was hired by the founder of the Cirque du Soleil in 1999 to be his private yacht DJ. I have been going regular ever since then. I would consider Ibiza as my second home. 50

Fui concebido en el verano de 1969 en las Islas Baleares en la luna de miel de mis padres. Fui a Ibiza por primera vez cuando era joven en 1996. Fui contratado por el fundador del Cirque du Soleil en 1999 para ser su DJ privado de yates. He estado yendo regularmente desde entonces. Considero Ibiza como mi segunda casa.

I have had an interwoven relationship between business and pleasure with Ibiza thorough the years.

Why have you decided to move to Tulum?

My relationship with Tulum dates back to 1975 when my father used to work for the Mexican Tourist counsel and as part of the creation of Cancun. I started going more frequently since 2008 and have resided there since we first opened Ahau Hotel in 2010. I was summoned by my business partner David Graziano to join his team in the creation of Ahau.

What events do you collaborate with there?

I kick off the season with the opening party in Tulum with my birthday celebration every year on the 28 of December in Ahau. We do a few key events through the season and we end with the Art and Me Festival which began three years ago.

What is the connection between Tulum and Ibiza?

The connection between Tulum and Ibiza spans on a multitude of levels. First the people, second the music and third the life style.

Tell us what you like best about each of the two places... What I like best about Ibiza is its positioning and freedom. It’s a meeting point for all cultures, open minded souls and globally aware people with one common thread: music. What I like best about Tulum is the weather, the consciousness of its people and the energy.

A lo largo de los años he tenido con Ibiza una relación entretejida entre el negocio y el placer.

¿Por qué has decidido mudarte a Tulum?

Mi relación con Tulum se remonta a 1975 cuando mi padre solía trabajar para el asesor turístico mexicano y como parte de la creación de Cancún. Desde 2008 empecé a ir con más frecuencia y resido allí desde que abrimos el Ahau Hotel en 2010. Mi socio comercial David Graziano me convocó para unirme a su equipo en la creación de Ahau.

¿Con qué eventos colaboras allí?

Todos los años comienzo la temporada en Ahau con la fiesta de apertura en Tulum y la celebración de mi cumpleaños el 28 de diciembre. Hacemos algunos eventos clave en la temporada y terminamos con el Art and Me Festival que comenzó hace tres años.

¿Cuál es la conexión entre Tulum e Ibiza?

La conexión entre Tulum e Ibiza se extiende en una multitud de niveles. Primero la gente, segundo la música y tercero el estilo de vida.

Where are you from?

I’m 100% Italian, I was born in Rome but I feel that the years spent in the UK influenced a lot the person I am now. I moved to London when I was 20 and lived there for 14 years... it was the best school of life I could ever ask for.

Relationship with Ibiza.

My relationship with Ibiza started at the dawn of my “dancing career”. I ended up on the island in the summer after finishing high school. What I felt in that summer made me realize that no matter what I would do in life, the Ibiza way of living was going to be my way of living. Ibiza used to be different then, but the spirit of the people who still come and live here is the same.

What do you take care of?

I care for a better world. Pretty simple answer, but I have the feeling that despite the fake news of 52

¿De dónde eres?

Soy 100% italiano, nací en Roma pero siento que los años que pasé en el Reino Unido influyeron mucho en la persona que soy ahora. Me mudé a Londres cuando tenía 20 años y viví allí durante 14 años... fue la mejor escuela de vida que podía pedir.

Relación con Ibiza.

Mi relación con Ibiza comenzó en los albores de mi “carrera de baile”. Llegué en la isla en el verano después de terminar la escuela secundaria. Lo que sentí en ese verano me hizo darme cuenta de que, sin importar lo que hiciera en la vida, la forma de vida de Ibiza sería mi forma de vida. Ibiza solía ser diferente entonces, pero el espíritu de las personas que todavía vienen y viven aquí es el mismo.

¿De qué te preocupas?

Me preocupo por un mundo mejor. Es una respuesta bastante simple, pero tengo la sensación de que a pesar de las noticias falsas

imminent disasters, politics controlled by aliens, etc., the world has never been better and easier to live for humans than it is now. We live longer and healthier. War battles are killing hundreds, not millions, of people. Most of the children get their education, and for the first time in history there are more men dying from eating too much than eating too little. So I care for this new trend of compassion to spread all over and not just in the trendy peace places like Ibiza or Tulum.

Why did you decide to move to Tulum?

Me mudé a Tulum para compensar el invierno en Europa, pero luego me di cuenta de que las habilidades que había adquirido al dirigir clubes y al estar involucrado en el negocio del entretenimiento podrían ser realmente útiles allí... muy lentamente, siendo un turista, me convertí en un habitual y un residente ahora en invierno.

I moved to Tulum to balance out the winter in Europe, but then I realized the skills I had gained by running clubs and being involved with the entertainment business could be really helpful there… so, little by little, from being a tourist I became a regular and now a resident in the winter.

Which one are your favourite places in Tulum?

The natural magic of Tulum was definitely boosted by the arrival of very smart and inspired entrepreneurs. Lio Malca with his iconic mansion made a natural paradise into an artistic heaven, Nomade and Be Tulum brought the glamour to the jungle and Ahau and Gitano make the best day and night entertainment all year round.

Ibiza and Tulum are places where the rich and poor, the young and old, bankers and artists meet and can become friends, lovers and business partners. I believe that there have always been places in the history of humanity where people gathered from different backgrounds, and these are the places that have inspired new ways of living. I believe that only with these conditions you can have social evolution. A Night person for sure. I am much more creative and active in the night hours… the days are to chill on the beach.

Yes I Know. The Tulum season is a short season so for the Ibiza people the connection is the gathering of hundreds of artists with dancers from all over the world in a magical and special place. It just feel like the summer never finishes.

I do not consider myself an activist but I like to support interesting projects that help the planet but more looking on to the low-income local realities that needs help. Both of them.

Yo creo que es mas que nada el crecimiento que a tenido la industria del la música electrónica últimamente con toda la tecnología que existe y a su vez un DJ ya se convierte en una marca cuando es impulsado con un marketing millonaria.

Yo creo que principalmente una falla en el equipo.

Si claro la conozco. La temporada de Tulum es como una temporada corta de Ibiza, la conexión es la reunión de cientos de artistas con dancers de todo el mundo en un lugar mágico y especial.

No me considero activista pero me gusta apoyar proyectos interesantes que ayuden al planeta pero mas aún a la gente de bajos recursos que necesita ayuda. Ambos.
