Beauty Buzz: What is Syn-Ake? Move over Botox!

Beauty Buzz: What is Syn-Ake?

WHAT IS IT?

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Syn-Ake is a synthetic tripeptide that mimics neuromuscular blocking compound of the venom of a Southeast Asian temple viper, that works in a similar fashion to Botox by blocking the neurotransmitters that tell muscles to contract.

Marc Heidl, Ph.D., explains us:“miimic wrinkles are part of the visible face wrinkles. As time passes, these wrinkles persist permanently and become deeper and deeper: frown lines, laughter lines and crow’s feet appear more and more due to the repeated movements of facial muscles.” Syn-Ake has been developed as an efficient smoothing and anti-wrinkle care particularly effective against expression lines by relaxing facial muscles. This active tripeptide acts in a manner similar to Waglerin-1, a neuromuscular blocking compound of the venom of the Temple Viper.

The mimic wrinkles, or so called expression lines, differ from the secondary lines and the primary lines since they are much deeper. These mimic wrinkles are caused by repeated facial movements. By a temporary immobilisation of the facial contractions by SYN®-AKE, it is possible to smooth out mimic wrinkles and make the skin return to a younger, more natural and relaxed look.

10 steps to look rich on a budget (with a little help from Coco Chanel)

Eventhough you're not technically the next heiress everyone's talking about, if you want you can still look like one. And nowadays you really don't need to spend a fortune to look like an A lister. If you want to look (and feel) like a millionaire, just follow our tried-andtrue tecniques and learn how you can still look the part on a dime. And to make things easier (and classier) for you, we've selected the perfect quotes from Coco Chanel, whose lessons in elegance and "fabulousity" will never become obsolete.

Coco Chanel photographed by Horst

10 steps to look rich on a budget 1. Classy is not always trendy If you stop and think about it, the classiest people are not the ones you see sporting always the latest, crazy fashions. That means, you don't have to rush to the nearest Gucci or Prada flagstore as soon as a new item comes out. Quite the contrary, rely on classics like a designer's black bag, a trench coat, and other staple items for a classy, ageless wardrobe. This way, even if you do spend some money for these items, you can rest assured you will be wearing them for years to come, and they will never look out-of-date. Coco Chanel 101: "Dress sharply and they'll remember the outfit; dress impeccably and they'll remember the woman."

2. Always look your best You want easy, simple rules to look like a million dollar bucks? Stick to the basics: white smile, shiny hair, well manicured hands, impeccable feet. In other words, just try your best to look healthy and well groomed. See... it's not that difficult: clean, neutral makeup, natural looking highlights and neutral polish shades look classy. Coco Chanel 101: "I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little - if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny."

3. Don't put too much on display

There is no easy way to put this: showing too much skin is vulgar. This rule does not apply if you're strolling on the beach, but going out for dinner wearing tiny pieces of fabric that work like Eve's leaves... definitely not classy. And while we're on the subject of showing skin, inked skin is not classy either. The Jolie's and the Beckham's may look hot with tats scribbed all over, but if it's elegance and class you're looking for, just skip any tattoos. Coco Chanel 101: "A woman is closest to being naked when she is well dressed."

6. Before spending, consider the "unflattering" factor Ok, so, that bright color is in right now, and that weird shape of pants, too. But, do these things really look good on you? The impeccable person only owns clothing that will look great on them. If yellow is all the rage, it doesn't mean you have to wear it. Stick to what really suits you. Coco Chanel 101: "The best color in the whole world, is the one that looks good on you."

7. Set a real budget

The internet is oozing with designers' discount shops and coupons. And, most importantly, get the most expensive clothing when it's on sale. And if that means having to wait a couple of months before being able to buy that handbag... well so be it. In the meantime you will have time to consider if you really want that bag, too. Coco Chanel 101: "Elegance does not consist in putting on a new dress."

Before hitting the stores or the internet shops for a shopping spree, be realistic and consider how much you want to spend. Prioritize your needs and desires: don't spend 80% of your budget on a pair of stiletto shoes that you will only wear on rare occasions. Spend your money on something you can wear more often and that will make you look "rich" on more occasions. Coco Chanel 101: "There are people who have money and people who are rich."

5. Tone down the jewelry

8. Learn how to save

4. Spend wisely

As strange as it may seem, jewerly does not always make you look rich. Avoid going over the top and keep it simple. A pair of vintage earrings, one ring sometimes it's all you need. Coco Chanel 101: "It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory of fashion that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure."

Breaking news: even rich people have a budget! When you learn how to weed out superfluous things you may not need, you’ll have more bucks to dress how you please. So, take a honest look at where your money is going: sometimes little things like ordering a smaller latte, saving a few phone calls and avoiding any waste, can result in having more money to spend

on better clothes. Coco Chanel 101: "Some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty. It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity."

9. Consider vintage Vintage designers' clothing is something you can afford, it looks fabulous and it's unique. So here you go, go treasure hunting with a friend for expensively made, gently worn pieces. '70s, '80s and '90s designers' clothes were impeccably designed and have remained virtually timeless. Coco Chanel 101: "Fashion fades, only style remains."

10. Sometimes, less is really more... Coco Chanel 101: "When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on."

BOLD LIPS Lip shades range from dark red to bordeaux. They can be red or dark berry, matte or with just a hint of gloss. But most of all, they must be mysterious, dark-fairytale like.

This coming fall, lips are not afraid the be the center of attention. The pros' advice is to feather the line for a soft finish and adhere to the golden rule: apply a lip-toned liner. Fill the entire lip first with the lip liner, to give depth and longevity to the color. Paint the lipstick over with a lipstick brush. Choose a sheer texture for juicy, vibrant lips. Opt for minimal make-up on the rest of the face to keep the mouth the center of attention. Also keep skin clear if possible, just even out the skintone and neutralize redness with a concelear. You could forgo mascara, but balance the proportions of the face by strenghtening the eyebrows with a pencil instead.

THE DARK LADY Get in touch with your darker side, and try a more provocative look. Smoky eyes if paired with deliciously dark lips create a dramatic, decadent and mysterious look: the key is keeping it uber-polished to avoid the grungy angst teen effect - it looks good on models, but not so good in real life.

Keep your face polished and sleek, à la Dita Von Teese. To create an interesting contrast on the eyes, highlight the eyebrow arch with a light shade. Then, gradually blend the black or dark gray on the eyelid and etch towards the outer corner of the eye. Remember loads of black mascara.

Key products to get the look: Yves Saint Laurent Collector Powder for the Eyes in Black Tuxedo is a contemporary interpretation of the tuxedo theme. This eye trio palette achieves the ultimate smoky look—the soft texture shades and blends effortlessly.

With the rest of your face kept au naturel, now focus your attention on the lips. Dark, juicy, sexy. The brand new wicked lipsticks by Urban Decay tempt you to stray from your predictable color palette. This luxuriously creamy formula nourishes and protects your lips with vitamins A, C, and E and is infused with a crème-caramel scent and flavor. Hyaluronic spheres are added to stimulate cellular function, prevent dehydration, and fill in lines and wrinkles. Meet Raul make-up artist

This month we chat with Raul Flores, a 24 year-old make-up artist from Santiago de Chile. He lives with his girlfriend Andrea and 9 cats. His first experience with makeup was at his sister's birthday party, where he found himself putting makeup on his sister's friends - and that was when he was only 12 years old! He then began doing makeup for his friends and himself, too, as he was in the goth scene. His love for makeup remained a hobby until he began studying artistic and fx makeup, while working at a MAC store. He now collaborates actively with independent photographers.

You are very young and yet you're a skilled make-up artist. What else do you do that we don't know of yet? I love to create dreads: they are for the goth/electro/industrial scene - you can see them at this site: www.obsessivehair.tk, and I also design and create corsets, skirts, bags and other stuff. But I mostly dedicate my time to makeup. At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to be a makeup artist, and why? I always liked art, I attended Artistic school and I specialized in sculpture. After a quick attempt at industrial design during college, I went back to my desire to create makeup: I didn't want to be a traditional artist and I didn't want a traditional, boring job either. I always knew I wanted to do new things and makeup gives me just that... I love to create art on a woman's face!

What is your favorite thing about your job? I love the capacity to make a woman even more beautiful, and learn new things every day. What has been the most challenging makeup you have ever done? I once had to do a complete body painting in just 2 hours, which seemed like an impossible task: I managed to finish it on time thanks to my girlfriend's help. Thanks, Andrea! What projects are you working on currently? I am getting a MAC certification in order to do makeup at fashion shows patrocinated by them. I also work with Kevin Kobek - fashion designer and p r o d u c e r (www.flickr.com/kevinkobek) on some independent productions.

Where do you find inspiration? What music, movies and books do you like? I don't have to look far away: I find inspiration in my house my girlfriend always helps me! I also find inspiration by looking at the sky, nature, my cats etc. I like mythology books and The Lord of the Rings, 100 AĂąos de Soledad, The Da Vinci Code. I like watching movies that have lots of fx, and I listen to new wave, goth/electro, pop.

set with powder (which can be a little darker than your skin tone). Then, apply blush on the cheeks - to achieve that "healthly look". Fourth: lipstick! Last but not least, apply mascara. I believe this is the most important part of makeup: applying 2 layers of mascara onto the lashes. You could also use eyeshadow and eyeliner, but mascara alone already helps a lot!

Your make-up work is mostly of the artistic kind, but going back to the basics, can you tell us the quickest make-up a woman can create in the morning when she only has 5 minutes to get ready before work? First of all, moisturize the skin always do this, as it helps keeping the skin beautiful and radiant! Second, blend foundation well on your face, and choose a natural shade; then

Great tips Raul! And what is an easy way to change a day make-up into a nighttime party face? The secret "ingredient" to go from day to night with your makeup, is eyeliner! You can change a day makeup into a night makeup applying a powerful eyeliner and applying a darker shade of lipstick; then touch up your blush, and apply mascara. This is the easiest way, and very effective.

Meet Raul www.ickr.com/photos/biteandscratch Being a make-up artist, I bet you can't help but look at women as they walk on the street and think: "Oh I would love to fix that!". What are the common make-up mistakes most women make and how should they fix them? ...I think the biggest mistake I see is applying a foundation or powder too dark for one's skin tone. So many women want to look tanned and choose a foundation shade which is too dark and they abuse it! Women should understand their natural skin color is beautiful, they really should learn how to take advantage of their own features. Did you read that girls? Don't try to hard to change yourself, just enhance what you've naturally got. And with such a huge variety of makeup on the market today, how should women select their cosmetics brands? I advice to choose cruelty-free makeup and organic skincare

brands. Also, try the makeup in the store before you buy it, to be sure it's ok for you. What is your favorite beauty product of all? An old faithful that sticks with you as years and new collections pass by? That's a hard question: I don't think I have a "favorite of favorites" yet. I love all my makeup products! Yes, being a beauty junkie myself, I can understand your answer. Let's see if this is an easier question: from your experience, what's the best way a woman can take care of her face and improve her overall beauty? (we're talking skincare routine, nutrition etc.) Think of your skin as the canvas for the makeup: you must have a daily skincare routine for mornings and nights that includes cleaning and moisturizing the skin. Also eat vegetables and fruits! And drink a lot of water... to do makeup on a dry skin is awful.

Makeup Lessons Raul Flores www.flickr.com/photos/biteandscratch This picture was a co-production with Kevin Kobek; the concept is inspired by the song "Pupila de Aguila" by Violeta Parra: this song talks about sadness and how a little bird died and never returns, so we created a set of 3 images and 3 different kinds of "dead". We proposed this idea to photographer Matias Troncoso and he loved it. We worked with Elite models and the pictures were published in Elite Magazine, a blog from Elite a g e n c y www.elitechile.cl/2008/08/19/ birds/ The concept makeup was inspired by birds of paradise from different places, this one in particular is the poisoned one, when she was still alive. Here are the steps to create it, you'll see it was very easy: 1) Apply concealer where needed, on dark circles, cheeks, lips, the apply MAC nc15 studio fix fluid foundation and set

with nw15 studio fix powder. 2) Applied bare canvas paint on the eye as a base, and then different kinds of MAC blue eyeshadows, and liquid liner. 3) Illuminate the cheeks, nose and lips with MAC mercurial mineralize eye shadow and mac quick frost pigment. 4) Finally apply MAC boundless 3D glass. As you can see, I use several limited edition products from MAC - which I just love.

(...) Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,-While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river sallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies; And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn; Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
