Astrology & Weather Forecasting DR. B. V. RAMAN

A

CCORDING TO RECENT PRESS REPORTS, the establishment of a high altitude astronomical observatory on the Himalayas with an hundred-inch reflecting telescope is being planned by the Indian Meteorological Department. The observatory “ when set up will help in the study of the heavenly bodies, researches on cosmic rays, astro-physics, geology, geo-physics, high level meteorology, micro-biology, etc.” Such an observatory would doubtless be a valuable addition to the extant ones in the other parts of the world. But a National Government in India is expected to do something more than merely add to the huge number of observatories already existing.

The Government should do something to give a fillip to the indigenous culture and indigenous sciences, not the least important of which is Astro-Meteorology. It is a fashion with some of the Western educated Indians to refer to the achievements of the ancient Indian sages in the realms of physical science including Astronomy and Meteorology, let alone the superstitious subject of Astrology, in contemptuous terms. According to them, the ancient Hindus were only a set of hair-splitting philosophers. Such a misconception is due to two factors, viz., (1) the one-sided education they have received and (2) pre-possession. It is evident from the remains of some of the most important achievements of the Hindus that in addition to Philosophy, Mathematics and Astronomy, many other equally important sciences flourished in ancient India. Chemistry, Dynamics, Meteorology, Physics and other cognate sciences existed in a much more advanced state than what we find them at the pfesent day. That there were powerful telescopes in ancient India is doubtless a fact. One is mentioned in Mahabharatha. It was given by Vyasa to Sanjaya at Indra Prasta in order to witness the battle going on at Kurukshetra. Coming to recent times less than two centuries ago Rajaputana produced an astronomer, no doubt the greatest of his time. This astronomer was no other than the famous Jai Singh of Jaipur. Raja Jai Singh constructed a set of observatories at his capital Jaipur, Muttra, Benares, Delhi and Ujjain, THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

and “was able to collect the astronomical tables of De La Hire published in 1702 A. D. The Raja left as a monument of his skill, a star list collated by himself”. It must be noted that all these astronomical achievements were intended for the good of humanity especially for the benefit of the navigator and the agriculturist. The study of astronomy could not be divorced from the study of astrology, for the simple reason that according to the ancients, celestial combinations always coincided with terrestrial disturbances. This gave them a clue to pursue the subject of astrology, astronomy and meteorology in all their aspects and arrive at remarkable conclusions about weather forecasting. Even now, it is a matter of common occurrence that village astrologers are right in a surprisingly high percentage of their weather predictions. Their rules are simple and dispense away with costly apparatus and laboratories. Observation coupled with experience enabled the great sages of India to dive deep into the subject of meteorology and discover the laws governing weather, rainfall, storms etc., which are of utmost importance to us. It must be noted that the ancients had been faced with the same pro-blems that we are and they must have therefore wracked their brains to find out solutions for such problems. They had to study weather conditions and guide the farmer in his agricultural operations. India being an agricultural country, great attention was paid to the study of astrology in its relation to weather forecasting. There was not a sphere of achievement in which the ancients had not made their mark. Whether in the art of peace or warfare, economics or sculpture, laws or languages, they had made their distinct marks. It is sheer absurdity on the part of the modern scientist to arrogate to himself the privilege of scientific enlightenment. The ancients discovered a grand truth that every member of the solar system exerts an important influence by gravitation upon every other and that the Sun in particular is the major arbiter of weather. Indeed the modern meteorologists completely ignore the major factors affecting the weather but considers only minor influences with the result that they hardly succeed in making any correct predictions. T WOULD BE APPROPRIATE to point out, initially, that much of the special Yogas and other factors, good or bad, have their genesis in some selective combinations of these five angas. They are collectively or separately, either interrelated or independent. To appreciate them effectively, a quick look into the technicalities of the five angas or limbs will be helpful. The first limb - Thithi or Lunar Day is covered in the covered previous issue.

Second Limb – Vara Now let us go to the second component of the panchanga namely the Vara or weekday. Of the seven weekdays Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered auspicious. Some consider Mondays as inauspicious when the Moon is weak. For specific purposes the weekdays ruled by malefics like Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday are admitted. Opinions vary with different authorities, over the selection of weekdays, especially for various agricultural activities. The lord of the weekday must be strong along with the Kalahoras and the Amsa lord rising at the time selected, to make the day chosen, effectively auspicious. Of the many restrictions and recommendations for the acceptance of weekdays for specific purposes prescribed by different authorities, the weekday spike or Varashoola is generally observed and rejected for travel in different directions, though exceptions come to the rescue, in emergent situations. Monday and Saturday have Soola towards East, Tuesday and Wednesday towards North, Friday and Sunday towards West and Thursday towards South. An extensive discussion on other aspects of the Vara is however, is beyond our present assignment. Third Limb – Nakshatra The third limb is Nakshatra . Nakshatras are 27 in number excluding Abhijit. Hindu astrology considers the zodiacal belt as Kalapurusha comprising of 27 constellations (28 including Abhijit). It is in tandem, divided into 12 rasis as well fitting 2.25 constellations in each rasi. Each Nakshatra has its presiding and subsidiary deities. The * continued from the April 2012 issue) THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

different Nakshatras represent the various parts of the stellar deity. Generally, nine Nakshatras Bharani, Krittika, Aridra, Aslesha, the three Poorvas, Visaka and Jyeshta are rejected for auspicious functions. The Nakshatras have many types of classifications that may require by itself an elaborate dissertation. To mention a few, there are classifications of males, females and eunuchs; divine, human and demonic; urdhwamukha (upward looking), adhomukha (downward looking) and triyangmukha (straight looking) and others. They are also divided into groups of chara-chala (movable), kshipra-laghu (short-dynamic), mridu-maitra (gentlefriendly) dhruva or sthira (constant-fixed), ugra-krura (aggressive-cruel), teekshna-daruna (ferocious-bitter) and misra–sadharana (mixed–ordinary), An elaboration is not attempted at this juncture. These varied classifications help us to select the appropriate Nakshatras for our specific and wide-ranging day-to-day activities depending upon their purpose and practice. Fourth Limb – Yoga The next limb of the panchanga is the Nityayoga that is nothing but the sum of the longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. This value is divided into units of 13º20’ to form the 27 Yogas. It starts with Vishkumbha, when this sum is naught and ends with Vaidhruthi, when again the sum becomes zero. Of these Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, Ganda and Atiganda are generally spurned for auspicious events. Nevertheless, there are several relaxations. Fifth Limb – Karana The fifth limb is the Karana that is technically half of the Tithi. So much so, the lunar month of 30 days will have 60 Karanas. They are mainly classified as sthira - fixed or immovable and chara or moveable. The chara karanas are seven in number and the sthira only four. The fixed ones, sakuni, chatushpada, naga and kimsatugna can be easily identified because these four are permanently allotted to the latter half of the krishnapaksha MAY 2012

Will Jupiter’s

Transit into

Taurus

Benefit You? GARGACHARYA

(Jupiter enters Taurus on 17.05.2012 when the Moon is in Revati in Pisces. He becomes retrograde on 6th October 2012 and assumes direct motion on 29th January 2013. He leaves for Gemini on 31st May 2013) He dons Suvarnamurti for Taurus, Libra and Pisces. He assumes Rajatamurti for Cancer, Scorpio and Aquarius. He has the attire Tamramurti for Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn. He has the garb of Lohamurti for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. For Suvarnamurti the results are splendid. For Rajatamurti good results are experienced. The results are mediocre for Tamramurti and bad for Lohamurti. Jupiter gives good results when he transits 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11 from the Moon viz. for the rasis Aries, Capricorn, Scorpio, Virgo and Cancer. This has been adjusted with the murti and other transits. No rasi gets Suvarnamurti with a favourable transit.

MESHA (Aries) [Aswini, Bharani and Krittika 1] Jupiter moves to a favourable place, but being Lohamurti the results are not well pronounced. Results depend very much on other transits. Though not very cheerful, the period gives some satisfaction. Many reverses you earlier had are now set right. There will be financial gains. Frustration and mental agony undergone earlier may gradually vanish. In official career you get elevation, yet the position may not be very satisfactory. The elevation is only in name and in effect may not be very desirable. You feel that despite the position you get, your wings are partially clipped and the powers cannot be exercised freely. The proposals for marriage may click, but there will be delay. The betrothal may take place, but marriage may be delayed because of some technical reasons. The time may not be suitable for marriage or the bride or the groom may have to complete some work before marriage. In the same way childbirth is likely, but there may be tantalizing moments making you frustrated. There may be travels, but problems of visa and other official formalities cause delay. You can vanquish your enemies, but the enemies are still powerful and the force you exercise turns out to be inadequate. There may be some unexpected success. Even in general life you will feel happy. The only problem is that all the achievements you have give you satisfaction. But the circumstances do not make you enjoy these things properly. Aswini: In the first part you meet with setbacks and some hindrances. In the middle part you gain in different ways and you feel comfortable. In the third part you face setbacks. Bharani: There will be favourable currents in the beginning. In the middle part, you are disappointed. In the last part you have gains. Krittika 1: There will be problems of health in the beginning. The second part gives you gains. In the last part you will face setbacks. THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

EDANTA DESIKA, the celebrated Sri Vaishnavite polyhistor observes in his Padukasahasra thus:

jeces jp³eb efHelegjefYeceleb mebceleb ®e Òe®eeveeb ceelee JeJe´s leoefHe Yejles mel³eJeeoer ooew ®e ~ ef®evleeleerle: mecepeefve leoe HeeogkeÀeû³ee efYe<eskeÀes ogefJe&%eevemJe¿o³ecenes owJece$e ÒeceeCeced ~~ Dasaratha wanted to install Rama on the throne. Kaikeyi wanted it for Bharata and truthful King gave it to Bharata. But, what happened was the coronation of the sandals, a thing which was beyond all expectation. It is difficult to know fate which operates in its own way. This drives home the idea that fate is indomitable and one cannot know the inscrutable ways of the Supreme Being. One question is this. If this is the case, what is the use of remedial measures? They become irrelevant. But there are people who view in a different way. For example Yajnavalka observes:

owJes Heg©<ekeÀejs ®e keÀce&efmeef×J³e&JeefmLelee The manifestation of the results of Karma is partly controlled by Fate and partly by human actions. There is also the statement,

jLem³ewkesÀve ®e¬esÀCe ³eLee veefn ieefle Ye&Jesled ~ leÜlHeg©<ekeÀejsCe efJevee owJeb ve efmeodO³eefle ~~

God knows everything and what he has willed will inevitably happen. But an astrologer does not know the fate. He only approximates to truth and from his point of view the combinations are not final. At times the evil results get obliterated by remedial measures. It is said:

With transits you consider the weak results. With combinations you decide the results which are neither weak nor strong. Thus from the astrological point of view, there are actions the results of which cannot be altered. In some cases the evil effects can be altered. In some they can partly be changed. With all these things the fact remains the Supreme Being who is omniscient executes his will. The horoscopes indicate Prarabdha Karma. It is said,

meefáeleeveeb Hegvece&O³ee lmecee¿l]³e efkeÀ³eeqlkeÀue ~ osnejcYem³e mece³es keÀeue: Òesj ³eleerJe ³eled ~~

Just as a chariot does not move with one wheel, fate does not operate without human effort.

Time selects a part of the Sanchita Karma accumulated in different births and makes it act with the soul at the time of birth. This is called Prarabdha Karma.

These things do not favour determinism. Astrological combinations are indicative or astrology is a probabilistic science and not deterministic. It is true that the omniscient

Solar Power for Government Buildings DR. J. KRISHNA KISHORE

[Whether it is Jyotisha or Vastu, primary importance is always given to Sun, the planet of health. It is a known fact that the Sun prevents our earth from freezing and keeps it warm. Exposure to the morning sunlight by way of a walk can stimulate one’s body to produce enough vitamin D that can keep one away from (or minimize the effects of) cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and maintain cholesterol levels that fight heart ailments. The healing energies of the Sun aid in production of serotonin in the brain that controls mood levels. While Vastu highlight’s the importance of the Sun in terms of orientation and ventilation, Jyotisha highlights the positive strength of Sun by signifying it with satwa guna, personal magnetism, self reliance, political power, authority, places of worship, gold, finance, health, coronation and courage. When this young scientist Dr. Kishore showed us the article, we felt it was a very relevant article that our readers world wide, and in particular our state and country politicians read the article and take the cue and focus on generating energy through the power of the Sun in Government habitations first. The Government (state and central) is the largest consumer of electricity and it is necessary that instead of asking individual homes to go solar, they first implement the solar project in all the Government buildings. Those of you in power (or in attendance), if you wish your future (health and happiness) to be as bright as the morning Sun, arise, awake and stop not till all the Government buildings use solar power and go green! – Editor, The AeM]

HE ADITYA HRUDAYAM, in praise of Sun, was taught to the tired Rama on the battlefield by sage Agasytya when He had almost given up. Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana is well known. The power of Sun is best seen with the following sloka from Aditya Hrudayam that Lord Rama recites. Aditya Hrudayam Punyam Sarva Shatru Vinashanam | Jayavaham Japennityam Akshayyam Paramam Shivam||

Meaning Aditya Hridayam will result in destroying all enemies and brings victory and never ending supreme bliss. Our forefathers recited the Aditya Hridayam (and we too) as they believed that Sun is the source of all energy. They performed Yoga with Surya Namaskar (prostration to Sun). Today, we have to once again seek the blessings of the Sun if we have to survive as a ‘power’ to reckon with. The security of a nation is related to its self-sufficiency in energy. India’s power shortage is serious. More than twothird of the power generated in India is through thermal power stations which use coal as the fuel. The rapid industrialization and urbanization has increased the demand for power manifold and a major portion of it is being met by thermal power. This has also started hurting the environment due to pollutants like CO2, SO2, etc. which are leading to climate changes that have serious implications on life itself. Recent reports from media 18

MAY 2012

highlight the critical shortages of coal supply to thermal plants which has started affecting power generation across the nation that can lead to power outages. Any reduction in power production leads to loss of industrial productivity and has a serious impact on GDP also. In recent times, there has been focus on solar energy to provide green power with major initiatives from MNRE Government of India for individuals to set up roof-top photo-voltaic power in their homes and also for solar power developers. Biggest Consumers of Electrical Power In this article, the main thrust is to highlight the need to have cent percent funding from Government for grid tied Roof-Top Solar Photovoltaic Power for State and Central Government buildings. Governments are some of the biggest consumers of electric power (order of hundreds of Gigawatts) in the nation. Already India is being ranked among the largest economies of the world. However, this ranking is linked to energy generation and consumption. Chinese demand for coal has started increasing due to their power requirements which will have an impact on the international coal prices. Any increase in the price of coal in the international markets will have a major impact on India’s energy situation as it is tied to thermal power. This impact on the nation. will be similar to the priceraise of oil in the global markets. The shift to Green Power in India needs to begin with Government buildings on top priority as funds are actually available with Government THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

The time of crash was 18:40 local time. Certain peculiar combinations and disposition of planets could have contributed to the crash.

The lagna lord is in the 8th house though in its own house but subjected to affliction from Ketu. The Moon transiting 6th house from the lagna is the weak point as it was Amavasya thiti ruling. Moon is in the 6th house indicating roga, losses, injuries and is aspected by Mars from Leo, the 8th aspect of Mars falling on Moon and Mercury. Moon lacks Pakshabala. Even though the Lagna is occupied by Saturn in its exaltation sign it could not behave well as it was in retrograde motion.

MAY 2012

The transit of Saturn in retrograde motion is 8th house from the radical Moon. The transit of Saturn in retrogression from Moon is a detrimental point that could have contributed to the accident. 6. The lordship of Venus from both signs has the significance of the 8th house. Moon in Pisces, the 3rd and 8th lord is Venus. Thula lagna rising, the 8th lord is Venus. Thus Venus has become 8th lord , and the day was ruled by Venus (Friday) 7. Jupiter the 3rd and 6th lord for Thula (Libra) lagna is aspecting the lagna. The lagna has the malefic aspect of Jupiter. 8. The constellation of Revati was ruilng on this day. The Moon is in 4 th pada in Vargottamsa. This constellation is the last constellation of the vedic Zodiac and often depicts final journey. 9. Jaimini sutras says when Atmakaraka is in the Pisces Navamsa it depicts final journey. If aspected by benefics it will remove evil, but in this case malefic Mars is aspecting it and hence could not cause good. - Uchhe Dharmanityata Kaivalyam Cha 10. The Dasa bukthi at the time of the accident is also not favourable as it involves the 8th place. Mercury dasa/Saturn bukthi was in ruling at the time of explosion. Saturn bukthi lasting from 7th February / 2011 to 21st October 2013. The Bukthi lord is posited in the 8th place from dasa lord and is a significant point to note. Further analysis of the antara lord reveals that Venus antara was ruling from 26 th January 2012 to 9th July 2012. Venus is in the 8th place from Saturn. 11. The numerological analysis reveals the day was totally ruled by number 2. The date is 20th April 2012. The combination amount to 11=2, Both day number and the total number is 2. continued on 39 5.

Healing Power of

Gems and Rudraksha PUNIT KUMAR VOHRA

NCIENT INDIAN TEXTS have demonstrated the power and efficacy of gem stones in astrological and medicinal applications. Popularly know as Ratna Chikitsa, gem therapy has been in use since several hundred years in India. In ancient times, astrologers used to advise Kings and royal families to wear gems. This would help the royalty to increase wealth, power, status and popularity and for averting diseases and disasters. Charaka Chikitsa, an ancient Indian medicinal text, often termed as the bible of natural medicine (Ayurveda) quotes several examples where gems have been effectively used to cure

illnesses. Astrologers have studied the various aspects and the effects of different gem stones and concluded that different gemstones created distinct reactions in the human body. Different gem stones have different refractive indices and thereby absorb the different colors of the sun rays and allow only certain colors to pass THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

through. This ability to filter light of certain wavelengths helps in producing the desired results. Depending upon the positions of the planets and their cause-effects, different gems are recommended to augment or neutralize the effects. As in medicine, the doctor prescribes antibiotics along with the vitamins. Gem therapy similarly uses a combination of gems for the best results. The difference between an astrologer and a doctor is that the doctor can prescribe medicine after the symptoms appear while the astrologer can predict the effects much earlier. The accuracy of diagnosis as well as the quality / purity of the medicines play an important part in the efficacy of any healing – likewise, in gem therapy the accuracy of interpretation as well as quality / source of gem stones are important. Vedic astrology states that there are nine gems which are assigned to nine planets i.e. Ruby, Pearl, Coral, Emerald, Yellow Sapphire, Diamond, Blue Sapphire, Hessonite and Cat’s eyes are assigned for Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu (dragon’s head) and Ketu (dragon’s tail) respectively. Indian ancient texts give ample details of their efficacy along with details of 84 other gemstones. In this scribe’s experience, we have experienced that gems, when properly used, have produced very good result. To get the desired results, the gemstone should be purchased on a particular day and

time (Nakshatra) and should be worn with proper procedure, only after completing appropriate rituals to energize the gems. The Power of Rudraksha Rudraksha seed (botanical name ‘Elaeocarpus Granitrus’) holds special significance for its healing properties as well as deep rooted connections in Indian vedic mythology. The seed has several clefts and the number of clefts on the seed determine its properties as well as its vedic astrology significance. The seed typically has anywhere from one to twenty clefts. In Hindi, the clefts are known as “mukha” which roughly translates to “face”. The seed is typically a size of a walnut and is also referred to as bead, as it is worn extensively in India in form of a necklace.

Rudraksha beads are also worn for health benefits as well as to protect from evil spirits. Each Rudraksha is good in its own way and a Rudraksha with different number of clefts is not inferior to another. Even the cheapest Rudraksha, which is five faced has its own significance. MEENA (Pisces): [Poorvabhadrapada 4, Uttarabhadrapada, Revati] Jupiter transits the third, the worst possible and assumes the garb of Svarnamurti the best possible. These introduce a kind of paradox and consequently there will be good results coupled with bad results. When you take up some ventures, you find that it is blocked at every stage. If it is construction of a house, the various phases like buying the plot, getting the plan sanctioned, construction and completion will take place. But you may be bewildered by the multiplicity of facts that impede the whole process. The bottleneck of bureaucracy, the lethargy of contractor and slow functioning of labourers, all these impede the progress. But there may be instances when things happen all of a sudden to your astonishment. There may be dislocation at times. With great interest you may leave your place and start after some difficulty. Suddenly unexpected changes take place and you may come back to the original station. If it is proposal for marriage there may be rejection at the outset. But gradually the people concerned may know about you and make overtures. In this way there will be many events which cause disappointment at times and pleasure at times. You may feel frustrated at the action of your opponents who are bent upon spreading scandals about you. At the same time you may have some well-wishers who give good reports about you and boost your reputation. You may feel the effects of both, but the turn of events in a zigzag way causes disgust at times. One cannot summarily reject this as a bad period. There will be pleasant experiences which warm the cockles of your heart. Poorvabhadra 4: There will be favourable currents in the first part. In the second, there will be problems of health. Timings for Rahukala, Gulikakala and Yamakantaka 12 hours of the day and 12 hours of the night are divided into 8 sections each having duration of 90 minutes or 1½ hours each. The seven Upagrahas kaala, paridhi, dhooma, ardhaprahara, yamakantaka, indrachaapa and Maandi take over by turns their ruler-ship of the seven sections, each day, leaving one to Rahu. The period ruled by Rahu is called Raahukala which is generally considered inauspicious. The timings of the ruler-ship of Raahukala for the seven weekdays are furnished in the table below. The timings given are for days when the sunrise is 06.00 AM and sunset 06.00 PM. For calculating the exact duration of the period of Raahukalam, on any day, the duration of the daytime must be ascertained first and that has to be divided by 8. The result arrived will denote the duration of the

each of the 8 sections for the day. For example take a Sunday having the sunrise at 06.20 AM and sunset at 05.40 PM. The duration of the daytime will then be only 11h.20m.., or 680minutes. Divided by 8 the sectional value will be only 85 minutes. Raahukala generally for Sunday is from 16.30 to 18 hrs. In this case Raahukala must therefore be only for

85 minutes. It would commence 85 minutes before the actual unset of the day namely, 05.40 AM. Therefore the Raahukala for the day will be from 16h.15m, to 17h.40m. It has to be worked out accordingly for the periods of other Upagrahas also. Gulikakala is considered auspicious. Regarding Yamakantaka, popularly considered inauspicious, opinions however, differ.
