What a summer it was! We were graced with great weather and a chance to return to normalcy. From beach concerts to white parties, it was one for the books. I hope you can get a taste of it from our social pages or our Facebook page (@njlifestylemag). With the end of summer comes that time when we have to get back into the swing of things. It's not all bad, getting back into a routine gives us the chance to update our wardrobe and freshen up our closets. And this year is no different, therefore, we have worked on a few hot trends for this Fall that you can find at our featured boutiques right here in South Jersey. Also in this issue, we look at some real estate trends in our area, along with the ever-changing housing market. And we even look at the past and present to celebrate the St. Leonard’s Tract in Ventnor and 100 years of community pride. Our Health Watch feature delves into the advanced technology behind knee replacements, and the life it restores to those with few options beyond replacement.Ofcourse, we wouldn't be a lifestyle magazine if we didn't travel. Our esteemed writer Molly Golubcow traveled to Prague to get a history lesson that only Europe can deliver. With each issue, we enjoy tasting a variety of great food and wine. And this issue is no different. With a recent visit to the historic Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield and its ever-improving dining options, Chef Dom overwhelmed us with many delectable meals. And speaking of wine, we invite you to attend The Right Notes event that supports the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. We recently lost our friend Jayne Bray, partner/contributor Michael Bray's mother to the disease. But you can honor her legacy by attending and supporting this September event that I personally consider the best wine experience of the year.So please enjoy these great features and the many others within the pages of New Jersey Lifestyle created by our talented contributors and staff. I feel blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by so much talent. And with that, I encourage you to get a copy of the new book Lucien by Danielle Gomes, the sequel to Evo-O, and a copy of Molly Golubcow's book, The Hotel on St. James Place: Growing up in Atlantic City between the Boardwalk and the Holocaust I look forward to seeing you soon. The texture trend extends to jackets. If you really want to up the cozy fall mood, grab a Sherpa jacket. Or better yet, choose a reversible jacket and get two styles in one. However, when it comes to jackets the bottom line is to have fun, because just about anything goes. “This fall we will be seeing sherpa, puffers, vegan leather, and real leather. Soft, warm sherpas and light-colored puffers will be big. Leather jackets in deep reds, browns, and embroidered will be very popular. Our favorite leather jackets are Jakett NY, which is 100% real, machine washable leather. Other brands we carry include; Paige Denim, Mother Denim, Velvet by Graham & Spencer, Cami NYC & Z Supply,” Giannone DENIMsays. Denim is a wardrobe staple and it’s not going anywhere this fall… thank goodness! Even better, just about anything goes in denim styles. “Denim is our store’s best-selling item. For fall there will be dark and light color denim. In cuts, we will see wide-leg denim, straight-leg denim, coated denim, cropped flares, and long flares. Black denim will be making a comeback for fall as well,” Giannone says. the — & Auction 18th, 11am til 2pm at Resorts can be purchased

Celebrating 100 Years — St. Leonard's Tract

Lately, there has been much to do in the press and social media about Ventnor suddenly becoming the “bougie” place at the Jersey Shore. Bougie as in upscale, upper-crust, and exclusive? Well, Ventnor may or may not be transforming into the chic place to be, but the St. Leonard’s tract, an incorporated sub-division of Ventnor, has epitomized exclusiveness for the last 100 years — continuously with the style and grace of a fine silk ascot.

Rich in History
Name Dropping Since flappers danced the Charleston at crème de la crème parties in the 1920s, stately St. Leonard’s tract manors have been home to some very notable people from the Wannamaker department store family to casino mogul, Steve Wynn. Rumor has it that Marla Maples lived in Wynn’s grand home on South Cornwall Avenue during her divorce from Donald Trump. Oh, if those walls could only talk. From politicians to Hollywood starlets, St. Leonard’s tract has hosted many notable names. To drop a few, let’s start with Irving Berlin and Charles Lindbergh in the 1930s and 40s. Other prominent people include politicians
Although the first homes in St. Leonard’s tract were built in the early 1900s, an Association with deed restrictions was established in 1921 — the oldest continuously operating homeowners’ association in the United States. To ensure that the look and feel of the properties stayed true, the Association dictated strict rules and bylaws including specifications of the house and garage, prohibited uses including multi-family dwellings (excluding servants’ quarters), and commercial use like slaughterhouse, piggery, and sanatorium.Although some of the bylaws may seem dated in 2022, the adherence to the rules, then and now, has kept St. Leonard’s tract a coveted place to live. Bill Sill, resident, and current St. Leonard’s Tract Association President understands how the times and needs of residents have changed over the years. However, he also sees that the years have not altered how committed the St. Leonard’s tract community remains. Sill explains, “Television, cell phones, computers, ATMs, and Zoom were decades away, women had only been granted the right to vote a year earlier, the average life expectancy was just 60 years, and the average income was only $3,600! Thankfully, what has remained constant is our residents’ love affair with the Tract, a desire to better the Tract, and the fact that our residents enjoy and preserve our tight-knit sense of community.”
Treasures to Discover Beth and Eric Neiderman immediately fell in love with their St. Leonard’s tract home — over 100 years old, with original woodwork, a deep hearth/ fireplace, and an original wrap-around porch with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, the beach block house offered a bit of colorful lineage — previously owned by the family of reputed Mafia boss, Angelo Bruno, in the 1960s and 1970s. Eric, Vice President of the St. Leonard’s Association, has become involved in the historic preservation group and the action committee. Neiderman explains, “I joined the board to get to know my neighbors, improve the community and the city of Ventnor, and help preserve the unique character of ourRenovatingneighborhood.”thegrand
ol’ house has become part of the family’s DNA. Beth explains, “We purchased the house with the intention of restoring it. It has become a hobby and a passion for us. We like that our home maintains the historic character of the neighborhood.” During renovations, the Neiderman’s continue to find “treasures” including a glass milk bottle from the 1970s, a Beatles album, and an original claw-foot bathtub under the porch. n
like Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton. On a local level, Paul “Skinny” D’Amato (of 500 Club fame) often entertained his Rat Pack pals from his Suffolk Avenue home — including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. on many occasions. Teresa Katz, a current St. Leonard’s tract resident, loves her neighborhood and its history. Her home, built on one of the lots from the John Wanamaker estate, gives Katz a unique sense of “… peacefulness and elegancy.” In addition, the fame and history of her neighboring homes add to the total ambiance and her appreciation of living in St. Leonard’s tract. On one side of her home, stands the famed Ireland house — once owned by the well-known coffee family. On the other side, another slice of history and note. According to Katz, “My neighbor’s house was once used as a brothel and speakeasy in the 1920s, and many years later, hosted the late Whitney Houston.”

When the clock strikes 6 pm on Saturday, October 29th, the ballroom at Resorts Hotel and Casino will be awash in black and white…tailored tuxedos and glittering gowns, crisp table linens and dazzling decor, and at the center of it all, a guest list that is passionate about enriching elder lives. It’s been a long time coming. In its triumphant return after four years, the Black & White Ball promises to deliver an extraordinary evening for the very reason it was begun a decade ago — to be the major fundraiser for the enriching programs at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC), the nonprofit home for the aged in Galloway. This year, the black-tie event will celebrate 20 years in SGLC’s Galloway location, 18 years of the Seashore Gardens Foundation, and pay tribute to the 53-year legacy of CEO Martin H. Klein.
“This will be our fourth or fifth year attending the Black and White Ball,” said Jason and Jessica Goldstein, co-chairs of the event. “We have always enjoyed the opportunity to join other members of the community to support and celebrate the staff, the residents and the programs that make Seashore Gardens Living Center such a special place for seniors.”
There are iN2LTM computers that connect residents with music, travel, video chats, and more. The Pet Therapy program features furry and feathered friends who visit and live among the residents. The annual dog parade on the Boardwalk is a highlight for all. Residents enjoy baking, movies, book groups, discussions on current events, and more.

The activity program at SGLC is one of the most robust in the nation. While the average nursing home might schedule a handful of daily activities, SGLC strives to fill residents’ days with stimulating programs that engage both mind and body, and enhance their quality of life. Here are some highlights.
Eldergrow is a therapeutic gardening program that engages residents in meaningful ways: physically, socially, cognitively, creatively and spiritually. Classes are a range of traditional gardening, garden art and garden harvest. The benefits are numerous and include: improving motor skills, reducing the risk factors for dementia, elevating mood, improving sleep, reducing falls, reducing agitation, improving self-esteem, and acting as an antidepressant.

“You only need to talk with Marty about SGLC to appreciate the reverence and love that he has for this place and for the people who live, work, and support SGLC,” said Black & White Ball co-chairs Brian K. Jackson and Michael Baker.

The Black & White Ball will feature cocktails, dinner and dancing to music by Eddie Bruce Experience. There will be complimentary professional photography for guests. Resorts is offering special room rates for ball guests and self-parking is complimentary.“Gettingeveryone back together and celebrating after so long is particularly uplifting,” said Erin Luurtsema, Special Events & Marketing Coordinator for SGLC. Erin comes to SGLC from One Atlantic Events, and the Black & White Ball is the first social event she is planning in her new role. “I think it’s helpful that I understand how a venue approaches an event, and can bring that perspective. It’s been especially rewarding working with a committee who knows the Black & White Ball and SGLC so well. The ball’s success ensures that we can continue our mission to enrich elder lives.”

Don't wait to get out of pain and enjoy your life. Dr. Orozco reveals why you're never too young or too old to get better. NOT YOUR FATHER'S KNEE REPLACEMENT 32 Fall 2022 | LIFESTYLE njlifestyleonline.com Orozco Orthopaedics, with three locations in Linwood, Manahawkin and Hammonton (left).
Dr. Fabio Orozco
It was a bright winter day when Tracey Shurman of Buena left the Atlantic City sporting goods store. Her knee had been aching all day, but she had almost become accustomed to the pain. However, this day was different. As she left the store and began walking to her car, she stopped in her tracks. The pain from her knee shot through her entire body. She could not take one more step. She sat down in front of the store with her bag and purse in her lap and began to weep. That is when she finally had enough. That was more than four years ago. Since then, Tracey, who is 51 years young, has returned to her active lifestyle after getting a knee replacement. She can work, exercise, drive, shop, do yoga, even ski without pain. It is a dramatic improvement from the life she was living before the surgery. A competitive gymnast in her youth, Tracey works as a nurse, standing for most of her day. The arthritis and instability from wear and tear on her knee grew worse with each year. In fact, her friends at work told her it was painful to watch her walk. It got so unbearable, that she avoided everyday activities such as seeing friends, exercising, and food shopping. At her son’s soccer game, she would stop to rest every few steps before reaching the field. It had completely changed the quality of her life. Looking back, she realizes now that she was depressed. She tried injections, physical therapy, rest, and medications. While some of these provided temporary relief, none of them fixed the problem. On that day when she sat crying in front of a store, she knew she needed a new knee. Tracey was in her late forties and more than one person told her she was too young to have a knee replacement. Her response, “I’m too young to be in this much pain and not live my life.” As an AtlantiCare orthopedic nurse, Tracey knew the surgeons and the outcomes of their patients. She had always admired the work and bedside manner of Dr. Fabio Orozco, of Orozco Orthopaedics.
Dr. Orozco discussed the surgery with Tracey, explaining the procedure in detail. After doing a CT scan to get 3D images of Tracey’s right knee, he determined the size of her titanium replacement and how he would realign her knee. Under local and regional anesthesia, and with the help of cutting-edge robotic surgery, he made precise incisions, sparing the tissues of the quadricep muscle, to give Tracey her new knee. While the robotic technology helps speed recuperation time, Tracey also played a huge role in her recovery. She was at physical therapy five days after her surgery. She went consistently and followed the program to stretch and strengthen her knee. Three weeks later she drove to Virginia. She got the surgery in January, and she wore heels to her daughter’s wedding in May. She went skiing the following season. Today she has no limitations. She calls Dr. Orozco, “One of the kindest, most generous surgeons, always with a

There are also other factors that are at play when it comes to recovery. In addition to physical therapy after surgery, he sends all his patients to “prehab” before surgery to help them strengthen their body, lose weight if needed and become better surgical candidates. Nutrition, exercise and making healthier lifestyle choices before and after surgery can influence the result.Another aspect of recovery, often overlooked, is the psychology behind suffering. As Dr. Orozco states, “Pain is such a negative emotion. It changes people’s perspective on life. They become anxious, depressed, or both. It is very difficult to socialize and be independent.” He says healing is a two-way street and emphasizes the patient’s role. “They have to want to get better…It is a significant part, possibly the most important part, of theirTraceyrecovery.”was not herself before the procedure and she was motivated to get better. Today she is living a vibrant, happy life. She exclaims, “I am forever grateful. There are times I see Dr. Orozco and I just say to him, thank you for giving me my life back.” n

smile who genuinely cares.” Dr. Orozco addressed the concerns many younger people have about getting a knee replacement, “Many years ago, when materials were not as durable, there was a conversation about age…Today we use implants that are very durable, that rely on bone growing into the prosthetic so they can last decades, usually a lifetime.” He says the process of sterilizing the polyurethane in the replacement blocks free radicals and oxidation and decreases wear to almost nothing. In addition, surgeons no longer use cement, which tended to break down over time. He says, “Why would you wait to get out of pain and enjoy your life? What we have today, we don’t know if we will have tomorrow. You are never too young or too old to get better.”

We get it. Times are a bit rough right now. The price of everything is going up, up, up, and some economists say a recession may be around the corner. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style, comfort, or safety if you want to save a few bucks on a new set of wheels.
The two higher Type S trims come with a 355-horsepower, 30-liter, turbo V6 engine, and all-wheel drive. The Type S has an MSRP of $53,700 and the Type S Performance starts at $54,500.“This is a sharp sedan that will look good in just about anyone’s driveway,” Christian Wardlaw wrote for Edmunds. “The leather/faux suede interior is also pretty spiffy … (and) at the TLX’s bargain price tag, it’s hard to justify paying thousands of dollars more for an incrementally better sedan.”Thanks to various adjustments, it is easy to find a comfortable driving position, Wardlaw wrote. Large door openings make entering and exiting the TLX “Inside, simple.design is clean and driverfocused, right down to the invitingly chunky steering wheel,” Willis Keulthau wrote for MotorTrend The infotainment system is on a 10.2-inch screen that pops out of the dashboard. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your time and readership. Should you have any questions about The Right Notes, wine, or our South Jersey community, please feel free to email me any time at Inmichael@passionvines.com.gratitude,
The Right Notes is produced collaboratively by the National MS Society, Passion Vines, and Greate Bay Country Club, and it remains the only fundraising event of its kind in South Jersey. The main feature of the evening is a large-scale wine tasting, including more than 100 top-scoring wines from around the world. To complement the impressive wine offerings, the event also includes a prominent selection from acclaimed breweries and distilleries. The addition of artisanal food, live music, and amazing auctions makes for a truly remarkable and unforgettable evening.

The Right Notes is very personal for me. My mom, Jayne Bray, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1990, and finding a cure for MS has been the charitable focus of Passion Vines since we first opened our doors. This debilitating neurological disease moved my mom from a cane, to a walker, and ultimately to a wheelchair. These circumstances, despite their challenges, never led Jayne to a space of negativity. Rather, she chose Grace — which was visible and felt by everyone she met. In June of 2022, Jayne passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Because of Jayne, The Right Notes was born, and in Jayne’s honor, we will keep going.

While some consider September to mark the end of summer fun at the shore, there are still plenty of reasons to visit this time of year. With its beautiful weather, lighter traffic, and abundance of festivals and events, September is one of my favorite months to be a Jersey Shore resident.I’d like to take this opportunity to share some information on one of my favorite annual fundraising events: The Right Notes, presented by The Donovan Financial Group of UBS Financial Services. The Right Notes is South Jersey’s fight against multiple sclerosis, and it will be held on Thursday, September 22 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. This year marks the 8th production of The Right Notes and 10 years since the event’s inception in 2012. To date, the generous support of event attendees and donors has allowed The Right Notes to raise over $500,000 to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and those living with MS in our local community.
As a recap, here are the event details:

The funds raised at The Right Notes benefit ongoing MS research and support the more than 400 people living with MS in Atlantic and Cape May Counties through the Society’s MS Navigator Program. This program connects patients and caretakers with information, education, support, and resources to help navigate the challenges of living with MS. Over the past two years, the MS Society received more than 450 requests for information, financial assistance, and services from our community through the Navigator program. If you are able to join us for this year’s production of The Right Notes, please stop and say hello. I would be honored to connect, and I’d be happy to provide some tips to guide you through the evening. It can be intimidating to enter a room with over 100 fabulous wines to taste (although I’d definitely categorize this as a good problem to have!), and I’ll be happy to share some of the insight I’ve learned over the years.

Atlantic City is becoming a beacon for the arts in New Jersey. Murals are popping up across the urban scape, cultural institutions are charging forward forging an era of creativity.
Two artists captured the ever-changing landscape of Atlantic City. Discover the connections made, and the memories preserved.

The celebrated African American artist Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City in 1917 and known around the globe. However, Atlantic City has also fostered the careers of two other artists born in the early 1900s, Floretta Mostovoy and Attilio Sinagra.Hailing from New York City, Jewish artist Floretta Schiff Mostovoy, born in 1919, began private art lessons at age eight and graduated high school with a degree in fashion illustration in the middle of the GreatAfterDepression.working as a fashion illustrator for an advertising agency for several years, Mostovoy met her husband Ira aboard a cruise ship. Together, the couple opened Captain Ira’s Bait and Tackle Shop, a fishing supply shop in the heart of Atlantic City’s Northside. Here Floretta continued freelance fashion sketches for local department stores while Ira worked on his photography.
While living in Atlantic City’s Northside, Floretta’s subjects were usually her neighbors. Her paintings remind viewers of the affinity between Blacks and Jews through their common heritage of oppression and shared fear of random violence. As a charter member of the now defunct Atlantic City

Sinagra completed a vast body of work throughout his life, ranging from book covers to internationally shown fine art. As an illustrator, Sinagra perfected the art of capturing the soul of his subjects. This gift, along with his appreciation for beauty, transferred over to all disciplines and bodies of work that Sinagra completed in his lifetime. Under the philosophies of Gerald Celente and Verdi, Sinagra focused much of his life on the redevelopment and Renaissance of Atlantic City. Acting as vice-chairman of the Atlantic City Art Commission, as well as through a series of personal artwork responding to the state of Atlantic City, Sinagra worked to bring Atlantic City back to its former glory. Attilio Sinagra received his BFA in Illustration from Pratt Institute, studying under illustrators Nicholas F. Riley and Harvey Dunn. Sinagra worked as an advertising and publishing illustrator in New York for thirty-two years, during the peak of commercial illustration. AtlanticFromCity.the time of the Vietnam War, Sinagra was appointed an Official Artist for the US Air Force. He completed assignments to paint his impressions of the war, which required him to travel to the middle of the action on aircraft and on the ground. His sketches from these scenes later informed completed paintings and lithographs that are now part of the US Air Force’s permanent collection. The discipline and sense of duty that came from his military background followed Sinagra throughout his life, eventually leading him to platform for the restoration of Atlantic City’s beauty as vice chairmen of the Atlantic City Art Commission. In the last third of his life, Sinagra primarily painted scenes and impressions of his hometown, Atlantic City. These illustrations highlighted the time of transition throughout the city. When Sinagra returned to Atlantic City in 1968, he was dismayed to find that the town he grew up in looked altogether unfamiliar to him. Heartbroken by the mass demolition of charming architecture and Victorian homes on the northeast end of the island, and decaying structures throughout the city, Sinagra felt inspired to improve his hometown. He began to document the changing face of Atlantic City through watercolor paintings, a project that continued until his death in 2004. Both artists capture a sense of place during the 20th century, the ever-changing landscape of Atlantic City. They draw attention to the connections made while preserving memories. While Mostovoy explores a sense of belonging and its associated feelings, Sinagra’s landscapes resonate with sharp architectural designs and transformation. Both artists have several pieces in the Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University's permanent collection.

Voted by Golf Digest as one of the 50 Best 19th Holes in the country, guests have been enjoying indoor and outdoor dining overlooking the awardwinning golf course since the late 1880s. The golfing term, Birdie, was coined on the grounds of the Atlantic City Country Club in 1907. Throughout its long history, the finely manicured fairways and large sloping greens have hosted many notable golfers including Joe Louis, Willie Mays, and Joe Namath. Although the Country Club was private and memberonly until 2007, the doors are now open to the public for dining options —lunch and dinner daily. In addition, the welcoming bar features many imported and domestic beers as well as other drinks to wet one’s whistle.

the Atlantic City Country Club is their “world famous crab cakes.” Each generous portion is topped with fresh bruschetta and creamy remoulade served with mashed potatoes and the vegetable du jour. While it is futile to time the market, often your market risk premium is the highest after stocks have already sold off.
CFP®, CPA, CFA, CRPC quarter after a drop as we’ve seen. Given the upward move we saw in July, the 3rd quarter has a great chance of posting a positive return. If history repeats, the second half of the year and subsequent 6 months could provide impressive returns should recovery take place.
While timing the market with any consistency is impossible, history has shown that selling after the market dips has never worked. Doing so just locks your investment account in at low prices and causes you to miss out on a market rebound that can take place. One thing that is important to be cognizant of is that volatility works both ways. While, typically, we associate volatility with market decline, the outsized moves of the market also make it so that some of the best days of the stock market follow some of the worst days. After the market bottomed from the Coronavirus selloff on March 23rd of 2020, the S&P 500 Index rallied a whopping 65.2% to close out the year! NASDAQ stocks advanced 88% during the sameWhiletimeframe.thevelocity of both the dip and recovery in the market was unique in 2020, looking at more past market dips can give you a better context. In actuality, there has not been an instance, since World War II, where the S&P 500 Index was not up over the next year after a 20% drop over 2 quarters as we have seen to start 2022. Data from the chart shown on this page from the Bespoke Report suggests that returns could be robust once the recovery ensues. An interesting thing to think of is how in July the S&P 500 rallied by over 9%. This chart shows that 6 out of 7 times historically the market did quite well the following
