Hello Holidays!
“A holiday is an opportunity to journey within.” —Prabhas
H
appy Holidays! I know it's a bit early, but now is the time to begin your seasonal planning. We’ve weathered the storm and we're not out of the clouds of the pandemic yet, but that doesn't mean we can't get a head start on gift buying, and preparing for a prosperous new year. In this issue, we’ve reached out to our local experts to gather what they suggest when it comes to extravagance! Check out their recommendations in our Holiday Gift feature. For me, all I have to do is look at our highlighted car, the Taycan Cross Turismo. This car offers the convenience of a wagon with the benefits of an electric car all wrapped up in a Porsche, a must-have in my opinion! And to make it all easy, Michael Bray and his team at Passion Vines will deliver all the holiday spirits you need with the ease of online shopping . But we can't forget to take care of ourselves. Robin Stoloff introduces us to several local experts to help relieve the stresses of life. Most of us know the basics, but incorporating some yoga and meditation has become a critical daily practice to cope with the modern world. Part of relieving that stress is developing a modern home workspace. I’m sure most of you, myself included, have adapted to a hybrid way of working between home and the office. Although I seem more focused at the office, it's still critical that I get some work done at home too. This brings me to our Home and Design feature where we explore some tools and tricks to make your workspace more comfortable. But what is work without some play? Our Travel feature takes us to several creative vacation options that push the limits on our adventurous spirit. In our Restaurant feature, I had the chance to work with the Dougherty’s to highlight their latest venture, Dougherty’s Steakhouse. This new addition to the Dougherty portfolio of restaurants does not disappoint. The steakhouse is similar to their other properties, with an emphasis on steak and seafood inside a large, elegant space in the historic Resorts Casino. It's a must-stop for their famous happy hour to get the culinary adventure started.

here’s one word that perfectly sums up this year’s holiday trends… GLAM! “People are dressing up again. We are already selling LOTS of dressy outfits for the holidays and it feels so good,” says Rose McCarthy, general manager of Talk of the Walk. From sparkling sequins to jewel tones, luxurious accessories to glamorous pleats, this holiday season is all about making a statement. So, whether you’re shopping for your holiday fashions or looking for the perfect gift, McCarthy has gathered the season’s hottest trends to style your holidays. Navy is the New Black “Black of course will always be a staple, but we are seeing more and more navy in place of basic black,” McCarthy says. Navy is considered softer and more universally flattering than black. Adding more navy to your wardrobe brings in some much needed, effortlessly chic variety. Bringing navy in to your wardrobe has even more benefits: it coordinates with every other color, it’s slimming, it’s elegant, and it’s timeless. “We have several beautiful navy designs. Our versatile navy tunic, our miracle dress, is incredibly flattering on everyone. We also have a very classy navy jumpsuit, which is fabulous,” McCarthy says. Sparkle and Shine Rhinestones and sequins are showing up everywhere. From jeans to dresses, touches of sparkle are adding pretty touches to almost every look. New York’s fall and winter fashion week sparkled too with virtually every fashion house incorporating some major shine into their collections. “People are excited to get dressed up again. They want to be seen. Sparkle is VERY in!” McCarthy says. Rhinestones and sequins work in a wide variety of looks. They can add a touch of glam to casual looks as seen on Talk of the

Walk’s denim and rhinestone. They also add pretty elements to formal fashions like Talk of the Walk’s navy and rhinestone dress. Jewel Tones Ugly sweaters have their place in holiday celebrations. However, sometimes you want to be festive but also fashionable. When it comes to holiday fashion, you can always wear the colors of the season. It’s the perfect way to be festive while also being stylish. “Our miracle dress comes in both green and red, which is perfect for holiday parties,” McCarthy says. Glam Cuts Break up the basics with unexpected cuts and materials. Sheer fabrics, pleats, and pretty hemlines are an instant glamour boost to any look. “Adding a touch of the unexpected is luxurious and perfect for holiday parties,” McCarthy says. With Talk of the Walk’s glamorous mesh jacket dress in black or navy, you’ll be the talk of the party. For a slightly understated look, the perfect ‘LBD’ — little black dress — got a glam update with Talk of the Walk’s black pleat dress. This wardrobe staple will definitely get you noticed at any holiday party. Fur “One of the biggest trends that we’re seeing this season is fur. Both real and faux fur are very IN right now and showing up everywhere,” McCarthy says. There’s something comforting about fur. It keeps you warm and cozy, while also being luxurious and beautiful. Whether you opt for real or faux fur, it’s the must-have fashion of the season. From jackets to trim to accessories, anyone can add a touch of fur to their wardrobe. Fur accessories also make great holiday gifts for your loved ones. For a gift that’s sure to please, check out Talk of the Walk’s fur-trimmed ponchos or funky fur handbag. n

hanks to the quarantined year, busy offices around the globe emptied. Watercooler chats became Zoom meets. And, the business world seemed to change overnight. However, despite common thinking, remote working is nothing new. The pandemic may have put it in the spotlight, but it’s been around for centuries. Before the industrial revolution, almost everyone worked from home. In the 1920s, the Ford Motor Company introduced the 9 to 5 workday, which the Fair Labor Standards Act set in stone in 1938 (Bestlifeonline. com). However, as early as 1979, forward-thinking companies began letting some employees work from home. IBM and JC Penny were two of these companies. In 2000, the DOT Appropriations Act was enacted and mandated companies to create telecommuting policies (SorryOnMute.com). Fast-forward to 2021, and many would say the 9 to 5 office job is a thing of the past, gone the way of cassette tapes and VHS. In its place, the home office has become a staple. Whether it’s for kids to do school work or a true remote work necessity, a dedicated workspace in the home is becoming more common. As a result, real estate listings have even taken notice. According to RocketHomes. com, from 2019 to 2020 there was an almost 20% increase in the number of listings that included the mention of a home office. If you’re late on this trend, looking to add a home office, or just ready to update yours, NJ Lifestyle has some tips to help you add a workstation to any location and make it both productive and stylish. Built-Ins “If you are ready to fully commit to a home office, built-ins are the ideal

way to add permanence, function, style, and value to your workspace,” says Ben Chapman, owner of Ben Chapman Development. They create a space with intention. “Built-ins will work in any size space. I’ve had clients use built-ins to convert whole rooms all the way down to nooks, and even unused closets, into workable office space,” Chapman says. When it comes to built-ins, it’s best to hire a professional so that you’re able to make the most out of your space. “It’s not like buying a piece of furniture, builtins have exact dimensions, and if the measurements are slightly off, the whole design won’t work. Built-ins also require a professional installation,” Chapman says. He recommends Colmar Kitchen Studio in Margate. While built-ins can bring the most functionality and style to a space, they tend to be more expensive than simply using furniture to create an office. They are also permanent. If your style changes five months or five years from now, your built-ins will still be there. Fast Fix If you’re not ready to fully commit to a home office, there’s still plenty that you can do to create a finished and functional work area. “The first thing you’ll need to consider is where you want to put your home office. You can convert an extra bedroom, den, large closet, or even an unused corner into your workspace. It all depends on your available space where you think you’ll be most comfortable working,” Chapman says. Do you work better with distractions, or do you need a quiet workspace? Do you have a rarely used guest room? Once you’ve carved out your home office space, you can begin

the design. “A home office should have a different design than a typical corporate office. Your home office should reflect the design aesthetic of the rest of your home,” Chapman says. Look for furniture that reflects your style and fits your space. “The options are endless. There’s a desk to fit every space. I’ve even installed desks that fold up into the wall,” Chapman says. As far as chairs are concerned, opt for something that matches your style. Avoid the standard industrial office chair and anything that you may find in a corporate cubicle. Finally, use finishing touches to complete the space. Paint color, pictures, plants, and accessories add personal style to your home office. All About the Ergonomics Nothing has redefined the workspace in recent years more than ergonomics. As evidence continues to mount, the

importance of creating a workstation that is built around the body’s anatomy has taken center stage. Dynamic office accessories are the biggest trend in home office design and with good reason. The science behind going ergonomic is powerful. According to ScienceDaily.com, an ergonomic workspace has been proven to increase productivity and efficiency, prevent fatigue while also being beneficial to your overall health. On the flip side, recent scientific evidence has demonstrated that sitting at desks for an extended period of time can have a negative effect on your health and lead to a dramatic increase in a wide variety of diseases. Bringing your home office up to ergonomic standards has never been easier. The key to having an ergonomic office space is to focus on posture and movement. There’s a wide variety of desks, chairs, and accessories that
make this a breeze. If you are shopping for all new office furniture, consider purchasing an ergonomic desk or a stand that can raise your computer to a healthier position. A great line to check out is Lounge-tek. This revolutionary ergonomic laptop desk was designed to create a healthier workspace for your home. This line is made in Italy and features artisan-created designs that are both stylish and ergonomic. The desks feature highly mobile components so that the placement of the workstation can be fully adapted to a comfortable, healthy position. The bottom line when it comes to your home office is that you create a space where you want to work. Make it comfortable and make it your own with personal touches. Remember, it’s your space, and you don’t have to wear pants to work there. You can take a nap anytime you want. Then find your inspiration to accomplish great things. n

SELF CARE
The journey to self-care is not a straight road. By Robin Stoloff
S
elf-care…this term has been loosely tossed around during the pandemic to refer to a wide variety of ways to live healthier and feel better, both physically and mentally, but what does that mean? It can involve different things to different people. What is it that makes you happier, calmer, or revitalized? Getting buzzed at the local bar and raiding the refrigerator at midnight doesn’t count. It is all about healthy choices, of course. Maybe it is curling up with a book, going for a jog, spending time with a friend. It may seem like common sense, but it is often the first thing to go when we are stressed or in a difficult situation such as a medical problem, divorce, financial trouble, loss of a job, or a life-changing pandemic. That is why it is important to make self-care a top priority, especially if other people depend on you. When life basically shut down in the spring of 2020 due
The ancient art & science of Yoga Giselle Toner, Yoga Instructor, Eternity Fitness Yoga is a powerful science and an amazing healing modality with its roots being traced back to Northern India over 5,000 years ago. In our Western culture, we know yoga mainly for its physical benefits which include flexibility, balance, and physical strength, but there are many other scientifically-proven benefits such as stress reduction, decreased depression and anxiety, reduced inflammation in the body, heart health, and relief of chronic pain. It promotes deeper sleep at night and the breathing techniques add to better lung capacity and increased energy during our day. There are endless volumes written on yoga, but briefly, the word yoga means union. Yoga is meditation in motion and the connection to your highest power. While practicing the postures, your mind becomes focused on your body and the sensations you are feeling, causing a "State of Oneness." Yoga has helped many of my clients who not only had physical limitations, but also debilitating mental stress and anxiety. I can give the strongest testament to yoga's profound benefits, as it has helped me overcome many of life's ups and downs. With practice, the mind, body, and spirit all connect, giving the practitioner the feeling of bliss. This is true Yoga.
to COVID, we were all out of sorts. However, as we adjusted and got a little more comfortable in our sweatpants and slippers, many of us took some time to re-evaluate our lives and what we really want from them. Some people changed careers or decided to work fewer hours, others are still working remotely. We heard lots of jokes about weight gain and the “quarantine fifteen” in the early days of the pandemic, but there were people that took advantage of the extra time, exercising more (albeit from home) and cooking healthier. As the world begins to open again and things get busier, it is easy to forget to take time for ourselves. Lack of time is probably the biggest reason people give for not taking better care of themselves. However, when we prioritize something, it is funny how we make time for it. There are almost endless approaches to taking better care of yourself, but here are a few ideas from experts in the self-care field in their own words.
Get to the point with Acupuncture Ericka Dice, Licensed Acupuncturist, Living Well Integrative Health Acupuncture is a great place to turn as a holistic remedy to not only treat aches and pains but also stress and anxiety. Acupuncture is like a reset button: many of my patients find a weekly acupuncture session is a healthy way to keep them “relaxed and able to cope with increased stress.” Beginning in China more than 2,000 years ago, Acupuncture has a long history of success. The insertion of very thin needles into the skin at strategic points on the body is known to release endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. In addition, recent studies have found acupuncture suppresses the inflammation caused by stress and improves immunity. What’s most exciting about acupuncture is seeing the body heal itself, and how multiple symptoms can be addressed in each session. Acupuncture is certainly an option to explore for natural treatment.

HEALTH WATCH
Eat well, live well with good Nutrition Georgia Saler, Vitality Nutrition & Wellness
Do you know the power of a healthy dietary regimen? The dietary choices we make play a huge role in overall health and longevity. Research estimates that in the United States, 90% of type 2 diabetes, 80% of heart disease, and 70% of stroke and colon cancer are preventable by diet and lifestyle choices. With the pandemic, we’ve seen that many nutritional factors play a role in determining the severity and risk of death associated with Covid-19. In addition, our bodies make some of our “feel good” hormones in our gut, so it is important to feed our bodies with a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and fermented and cultured foods. It is best to avoid highly processed foods that contain high amounts of fat, sugar, and salt. Nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated, frustrating, or overwhelming, and eating healthy doesn’t have to mean giving up on enjoying food. The truth is: there are a lot of “right” ways to eat well, but most of us could use a little bit of help. While we would love a quick fix, lasting change is in the little habits that we build over time, with practice and support. Many of my clients report that when they begin to eat healthier, in just a couple of days they feel happier, have more energy, and have a more positive outlook on life.
Here’s to our heroes. Today, we salute our veterans. This Veterans Day, we’d like to pause for a moment to thank the brave men and women who have served in defense of our country, our freedoms, and our safety. Your courage and sacrifice is an example for all of us. For everything you’ve done for us, it is our honor to serve you and your family. Think about Meditation Heidi Farber, Hummingbird Yoga Many people have considered meditation in the last few years as a way of dealing with the stressors we all face. Instead of quickening our pace, we find that slowing down may be the only way to catch up. When life throws us a curveball, we are forced to pause and observe what is happening. However, what if you decide at any time to take a few moments to settle into the body and just watch anything that comes up? Let your fears and doubts, anger, and resentments surface. Embrace your emotions and invite them in. Befriending feelings becomes a gateway to letting them go. Meditation gives us the tools to handle whatever life brings. By looking into yourself, notice without any judgment what it feels like to be human. Sitting with yourself is probably one of the most difficult things to do, but with regular practice, you can grow comfortable with your body and explore your mind. The technique is not that important. The main point is learning how to relax the monkey mind. Learn to let the thinking mind be settled and at ease in a state of peace. Wake up to the treasure trove of beauty and goodness from deep within. Allow serenity into your life. A 12th century Tibetan meditation teacher said, “Don’t recall, don’t imagine, don’t think, don’t examine, don’t control. Rest, relax, right now, and rest.” Begin where you are. n

WAGON MEETS SPORTS CAR With a roomy back seat, a decent amount of cargo space, and 468 horsepower, this all-electric vehicle is not your mother's wagon. By Elaine Rose

T
he Taycan Cross Turismo might just be the car of your dreams. Want to go easy on the environment? This vehicle is allelectric. Doesn’t take a drop of gas, therefore no carbon emissions. Have a couple of kiddos, or want to travel with friends? The Taycan Cross Turismo has a roomy back seat and a decent amount of cargo space. You like speed? The base model has 468 horsepower and can reach 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. The top trim goes from zero to 60 in an astonishing 3.1 seconds. And the top speed is 161 mph. You want it to handle like a sports car? It’s a Porsche. ‘Nuff said. The Taycan is new in the Porsche stable. The name reportedly comes from the Turkish for “lively young horse,” in reference to the stallion on the Porsche crest. The sedan made its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Cross Turismo was first manufactured for the 2021 model

year. It is assembled at Porsche’s plant in Stuttgart, Germany. Porsche markets the Taycan Cross Turismo as a crossover SUV. But every expert reviewer says it’s really a station wagon — but definitely not your mother’s wagon. Fun to drive, the Cross Turismo is “both a useful family-hauling tool and a great way to make wagon-haters look like fools” Eric Stafford wrote for Car and Driver. The battery uses 800-volt technology, as opposed to the 400 volts in most EVs. The performance battery Plus, standard in all Cross Turismo trims, has thirty-three modules with 396 available cells. Each vehicle has two Permanent Magnet Synchronous motors. One charge can take you about 200 miles. All-wheel drive is the only option, and the car comes with two-speed automatic transmission and several drive modes. There are three trim lines: the 4 Cross starting at $93,700 with 468 horsepower, the 4S with a $110,300 base price and 562 horsepower, and the Turbo (albeit with no turbo engine) with 670 horsepower and a starting price of $153,500. Unless you’re a real speed demon, reviewers say the base model should suffice. The controls will take some getting used to. There are three screens: a 16.8inch curved screen for the driver, a 10.9-inch display on the dashboard for controls, and an 8.4-inch screen on the center console for infotainment. There are no manual buttons; everything is controlled on the touchscreens. The “sea of touchscreens are simultaneously simple and infuriating to operate,” Travis Okulski wrote for Road and Track. The system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and has built-in navigation and a WiFi hot spot. For hauling stuff — be it luggage, groceries, or sports equipment — the storage capacity is good for a sports car. The rear compartment holds 15.7

cubic feet and a trunk in front holds another 2.9 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded, the base model holds 42.8 cubic feet, with slightly less on the Turbo model. Enough of the tech. The reason you buy a Porsche is for the pleasure of driving it. And a pleasure it is, reviewers say. “The Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo explodes forward when you breathe on the throttle, at a pace few other station wagons — let alone sports cars — can match,” Christian Seabaugh wrote for Motor Trend. And that’s the base model. Running around town on errands, it feels the same as the sedan, but in “normal” mode, the ride is a bit stiffer than the sedan, Seabaugh wrote. Step up to the Turbo, and you won’t know what hit you the first time you get behind the wheel. Driving it is a “special thing,” wrote Road and Track’s Okulski. Though not the fastest Taycan, “it's still quick enough with launch control to make you think that your brains are going to fly out of your ears,” Okulski wrote. “The first launch is truly mind-boggling. The sheer shock of a thing this heavy-hitting 60 in three seconds will sit with you for far longer than it should.” But on the road, it handles quite well, he said. The low center of gravity allows the 5,000-pound Cross Turismo to take corners better than other electric vehicles on the market. Although not made for off-roading, the Cross Turismo can handle itself off the beaten pack. Hannah Elliott, writing for Car Reviews, took the base model for a test ride up a dirt road south of Pasadena, California. “I’m happy to report that Porsche’s newly kitted-out wagon proved capable and powerful enough to make it to the top of a hill, easily covering the worst of the terrain while its electric motor hummed away,” Elliott wrote, adding she would not attempt that feat in the Taycan sedan. With the “gravel” drive mode, “I was rewarded with a sweeping 360-degree view ranging from downtown Los Angeles to Highway 2 and Angeles National Forest, a vista I shared only with a hawk.” Nice to know, even if you have to go to Sussex County to have this experience in New Jersey. To keep you safe on your driving adventures, emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. More gizmos are optional. If you take road trips, you may have an issue with keeping the engine charged — at least until charging stations become more widespread. But three years of Porsche’s Electrifying America come with the purchase. And it takes just 22 minutes — or a quick lunch break — to get the battery almost up to full charge. Consumer Reports has not rated the Cross Turismo, but predicts the Taycan will be about average in reliability and way above average in owner satisfaction. If you’re interested, you probably won’t find a Cross Turismo on the dealer’s lot, so you’ll have to special order one. But trust us, it will be worth the wait. n

hen planning a vacation, lodging typically tops the checklist right after selecting a destination. The safe route for most people — book a vanilla-style room with a reputable hotel chain featuring four symmetric walls that are decorated exactly the same whether you are in California or Florida. Amenities may include ice bucket, hair dryer, and a coffee maker with complimentary decaf or regular packets. Not to say that there is anything wrong with those choices, but some people look for a more interesting and unique place to hang their hat when travelling. In 2020, Airbnb, the online vacation rental marketplace, advertised a whopping 90,000 cabins, 40,000 farms, and 3,500 castles available for rent. Within the category of unusual places to stay on vacation, there is a sub-level of options that are uber unique and over the top. For example, a glamping tree-house or a completely mirrored apartment. The desire to rent “something different” increased 20% last year according to Vrbo, another rental website, offering chalets to cabin options. If you are planning a vacation and want more than a cookie cutter room, with or without a view, imagine yourself waking up in one of these out-of-this-world lodgings.

Holiday Q & A with Michael Bray
F
ingers-crossed, it certainly feels like we’re entering a “safer place” this holiday season compared to where we were a year ago. No better holiday than Thanksgiving to increase our collective level of gratitude that we so need as a community. I for one am so thankful for the opportunity to connect with you via email and in-store. In this issue, I share a few of these interactions via Q&A. I hope that it will provide you with some (wine) inspiration to make this Thanksgiving — one to remember! “We're having a very traditional Thanksgiving (turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce) — what do you recommend for a white and red, approximately $20 / bottle?” The Thanksgiving table has a lot going on. Centerpieces like turkey and ham have unique flavor profiles that are rich, salty, and ever-so-slightly sweet. Throw in stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and gravy, and you find a boatload of flavor profiles to try and match. So on a feast day, you need a wine that can pull everything together; fruitiness is your friend here. Reach for Beaujolais, such as Moulin-a-Vent. This cru-level red wine made from Gamay gives you fruitiness, with a touch of herbs, spice, and minerality all while providing a backbone of acidity and tannin to cleanse your palate between bites. White wine lovers should seek aromatic wines like Pinot Gris, Riesling, or even a sparkling blend of aromatic varieties, like Montinore Vivace (because no one is refusing bubbly). “What do you suggest I pair with homemade pumpkin and pecan pie.” Pumpkin and pecans are also challenging foods, especially in pie format, when it comes to wine pairings. Pumpkin has a savory-umami, lightly sweet character. Late harvest white wines of any kind work very nicely here, giving you just a touch of sweetness, but if those are difficult to find you may have more luck with a Tokaji or a Sauternes, whose funky/vegetal characteristics lend well to pumpkin’s flavor profile. Pecans have a bitterness to them and in a pie, we have a bittersweet combination, a tough but certainly not impossible pairing! Try a Pedro Ximinez Sherry, which is sweet and nutty. An aged Tawny, such as Graham’s 20 Year, is versatile enough to work with both pumpkin and pecan pies as the dried citrus, toffee, caramel, and baking spice profile can help pull both together. For those who may not be looking for a wine, a Port-finished Bourbon or even a Milk Stout make for excellent alternatives.

“I’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving with my in-laws for the first time. They are big wine drinkers and I would like to impress them with a nice bottle. Thoughts?” The Thanksgiving table often calls for simplicity, but whether after the meal or for another night altogether, a special bottle is wonderful to give someone (especially new extended family). Burgundy is always a lovely wine to present at Thanksgiving. Vincent Girardin has always been a favorite producer here at Passion Vines, whose wines have graced our shelves for many years. The Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes (white) or Pommard 1er Cru (red) are great choices, whether your family is going to be introduced to fine Burgundy, or is already experienced with it. Do they like Italian wines? You can’t go wrong with a Brunello di Montalcino (try Canalicchio di Sopra). Do they like bold California red wines? Try Waypoint Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa. “We’re hosting and my wife is making a homemade pumpkin soup. What wine pairs with soup?” So if we take a page from the previous pumpkin pie example, we can certainly apply it to a soup. Hearty fall soups made from pumpkin, butternut squash, and other “bisques” are great with Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, but this is also an opportunity to enjoy a dry Chenin Blanc, such as Dry Creek Vineyard. Taking the leftover turkey meat and bones to make a soup? Pair it with an unoaked or lightly oaked Chardonnay to complement the richness, or make a contrasting pairing with a Sauvignon Blanc from Chile (citrusy and bright) or South Africa (grassy with exotic fruit). I hope this Q&A provided you with some insight and inspiration. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any lastminute questions or even a bit of gratitude you would like to share with me. Together, let’s raise our glass and the collective gratitude (and consciousness) of our community!
With Gratitude,

he story about the early Jewish Alliance agricultural colony and related Jewish farming communities in Southern New Jersey, which had their inception during the initial years of the refugee crisis, 1882 and 1883, is driven by resilience. Fueled by a desire to escape violence, suppressed freedoms, and prejudice, Eastern European Jews fled Russia seeking the opportunity to become “Tillers of the Soil” and, eventually, American citizens. The development of the Alliance Agricultural Colony, as well as its sister communities, reflects a variety of challenges faced by the families who built these communities. Their adoption of American pastimes shows their desire to embrace American culture while maintaining their religious beliefs. In late 1881, Russian Jewish emigrants began arriving in America by the thousands, with most disembarking at the New York City docks in lower Manhattan. Castle Garden, located in Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan, became the emigrant landing depot, functioning as the New York State immigrant registration center and de facto entrance point for most of the East Coast.

Remembering their arrival in South Jersey many years later, founding settlers described being “dumped” at the rail station. Carrying all their earthly belongings from Russia, not much, they tramped two miles on foot to three long, wooden barracks, recently built-in anticipation of their arrival. These barracks, situated on a hill overlooking the Maurice River, were dubbed “Castle Garden,” an ironic nod toward the initial point of entry for immigrants into the United States. The better-known Ellis Island took its place as the emigrant landing center in 1892. The Hebrew Emigrant Aid Society of New York (HEAS), had purchased twelve hundred acres from the Leach brothers and paid them to make initial preparations for the colonists, first building the barracks and later building houses for each family. Amid the 1881 pogroms, a group of Russian Jewish intellectuals formulated the idea of Am Olam, the belief that Jews “should go to America to become tillers of the soil and thus shake off the accusation that we were mere petty mercenaries, living upon the toil of others” (Sidney Bailey, Yoval). According to Sidney Bailey, a founder of the Am Olam chapter in Odessa and an early colonist of Alliance, our thought was to live in the open instead of being “shut-ins” who lived an artificial city life. We desired to be dependent for our living upon the elements of Father Sun and Mother Earth instead of depending upon the whims of others. We desired to lead a really healthy and honorable mode of life. We were not to be, at our farm vocation, envious one of another, but to live upon our own resources with the help only of nature. Our goal was to own a home and land as a means of earning a livelihood and to be true citizens of our adopted country For most Jews, the drive behind emigration was not a yearning for the land, but rather for safety and freedom. York, and to a lesser extent Philadelphia and Boston. Most were destitute, or nearly so, and in need of assistance to gain a foothold in the United States. In New York City, in December 1881, the Hebrew Emigrant Aid Society (HEAS) was incorporated and began its work as the most consequential American Jewish relief organization of the period. For a brief time, the HEAS was involved in agricultural colonization; the society was the first to support the farming colonies of Alliance and Rosenhayn in southern New Jersey, as well as colonies further west. Sheer numbers overwhelmed its efforts. Immigrants arriving daily at the Castle Garden needed food, shelter, and some means of employment. The cost of supplying these immediate needs quickly precluded expenditures on resettlement to far-flung agricultural colonies. By 1883, the HEAS, along with European efforts by the Alliance Israélite Universelle and the Mansion House Relief Fund, had turned away from colonization, disenchanted by repeated failures and the great expense. When the influx of immigrants decreased after the temporary cessation of pogroms, the HEAS believed the crisis was at an end; it closed shop by the end of March 1883. The birth of Alliance was therefore a momentary possibility. Several farming colonies that preceded it (and followed) failed after short periods of trial. In the spring of 1882, on May 10th, a train stopped at Bradway Station on the New Jersey Central Railroad, in Pittsgrove Township. Forty-three Russian Jewish families disembarked from emigrant cars. These were the inaugural settlers of the Alliance Colony. Soon they were joined by other refugee families and together, with the help and support of philanthropists, government workers, and local community members, these newest immigrants, almost wholly untrained in agriculture, made Alliance their home and the first successful Jewish farming community in America. Sixth months after arriving at the colony, the settlers were in homes, with mortgages set at $350 payable over ten years with interest. They had begun working their land, but there would be no harvest for at least six months. They were going to be strapped to survive. Throughout the initial harvest season, with few crops of their own to tend, the settlers walked long distances to serve as harvest labor for Salem and Cumberland county farmers. Often walking eight miles one way, or more, they picked berries, scooped cranberries, and did whatever they could to find work. As time went on, new Jewish colonies like Estellville and Burbridge sprang up in southern New Jersey and eventually collapsed for various reasons. As you visit the exhibit, the story continues with Jews gaining citizenship to grow the American dream. Artifacts and photos explore how the communities rallied around baseball and the local swimming holes on the Maurice River. Finally, the narrative shares the strong history of the local synagogues and schools. n

enerally speaking, restaurants come and go like the tides. However, in the Atlantic City area, the Dougherty family has been serving fine quality food for over 120 years. “Consistent,” “friendly,” and “delicious” are only a few words that customers use to describe their restaurants. Whether Dock’s Oyster House (opened in 1897), Knife & Fork Inn, or the Linwood Country Club, the world-renown culinary brand has become an Atlantic City icon. Rather than rest on their impressive laurels, the family introduced their latest venture in 2021 — Dougherty’s Steakhouse. A Culinary Journey According to Maureen Shay, owner, the quest to open a steakhouse began about 15 years ago. While investigating options in town, Mack Latz, former owner of the Knife & Fork, approached the Dougherty’s with an unexpected offer. Shay explains, “The Knife & Fork Inn is such an iconic and beautiful building, we could not pass up the opportunity. Because Dock’s Oyster House had such a focus on seafood, the Knife & Fork became more of a steak & seafood restaurant when it opened in 2005.” As a result, the steakhouse idea went on the back burner (pun intended). Since good things come to those who wait, the Dougherty’s eventually found a location for their next restaurant — in the Resorts Hotel and Casino. The classic building fits perfectly with their vision for fine dining in Atlantic City. In addition, the location epitomizes Dougherty's deep roots in the community. According to Shay, “The hotel itself is a beautiful representation of Atlantic City’s history, which we
are doing our best to preserve and celebrate. And the Resorts team could not have been more supportive throughout the process.” Tried-and-True So, what can customers expect from Dougherty’s Steakhouse? The answer is easy — the same emphasis on quality ingredients and fresh preparations found in the other Dougherty restaurants. You also will find warm and friendly staff regardless of which venue you select. Shay and the rest of the Dougherty family want all guests “…to feel like a local the minute you walk in the door” — whether the door is at Dock’s, Knife & Fork, Linwood Country Club, and now The Steakhouse. All of their culinary team members are extremely knowledgeable, and they care — a trait that customers immediately experience at all of their restaurants. Whether the new steakhouse or the tried-and-true locations, Shay wants her guests “…to be wowed by the food and the service. We want them to enjoy the ambiance, and feel comfortable and welcome the minute they arrive. We want them to leave feeling like they have made new friends and can’t wait to come back.” Something for Everyone Because of the unique layout of the room, the Steakhouse is almost like two restaurants in one. For example, if you are out for a casual evening, try the bright and airy experience at the Raw Bar. Open for lunch and through the evening, the 32-seat Raw Bar is a go-to place to pop in for lunch, happy hour, or dinner, or just grab a drink — all without reservations. Happy Hour is a draw offering a variety of halfpriced appetizers and drink specials every day from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. And, you can watch your $1.25 oysters and

If you are looking for a more intimate and sophisticated evening, the atmosphere at the Steakhouse suits your needs. The dining room offers more of a classic, steakhouse feel with dark woods and rich finishes that speak to the history of Resorts (formerly the classic Chalfonte-Haddon Hall). The menu is quite impressive from a variety of steaks to fish and seafood options. And, the answer to the burning question that many loyal customers have asked, Shay confirms, “Yes, we are bringing Joe’s Cheese Pie to Dougherty’s!” On the Menu To start your meal at Dougherty’s, try the Grande or Royale Seafood Tower appetizers — three tiers of freshly shucked oysters and clams, shrimp cocktail, whole Maine lobster, tuna tartare, king crab, colossal crab meat, and all the accompaniments. These towers showcase the raw bar aspect of the restaurant. Without a doubt, the signature dish is the Bone-In Ribeye — an enormous, in size and flavor, 38-ounce Tomahawk style cut. Very impressive in looks and taste. Another Steakhouse entree, taken to the next level at Dougherty’s, is the Wagyu Carpaccio — raw Wagyu beef sliced paper-thin and paired with truffle pecorino, baby arugula, and charred piquillo pepper. For something shareable, Dougherty’s Charcuterie & Cheese Board is not only beautifully presented, but also delicious and satisfying. Guests rave about the combination of cheeses and meats along with the sweet and savory garnishments. Not a meat-eater? No worries. The Wedge Salad, with crisp iceberg topped
with (or without) bacon, chives, red onion, and bleu cheese dressing is a classic combination. The Tuna Poke Bowl is a popular choice — raw chunks of ahi grade tuna, garnished with edamame and radish, atop perfectly cooked black rice, and dressed with just the right amount of sesame aioli to allow the freshness of the tuna to shine. For something a little lighter, the salmon is a must — cooked perfectly with a slight crust while remaining tender and moist inside, along with the zucchini, corn, and orzo salad. Next Chapter Harry “Dock” Dougherty, the founder, is hopefully smiling down on his great-grandchildren thinking how far the business has come from the neighborhood restaurant he created well over a century ago. For generations, the family has participated, first hand, in Atlantic City’s dining revolution. What’s next for the culinary dynasty? Shay sums up the family’s goals, “We will continue to be a foodie’s destination, with some fun gambling and entertainment to round it out. We are in the Atlantic City game for the long haul!” n

TAX-LOSS HARVESTING Don't miss the opportunity
T
his time of year many people start thinking about year-end tax planning. An integral part of tax planning involves the potential for tax-loss harvesting in your taxable portfolio. What we are going to discuss below can only be done in taxable accounts (i.e. individual, joint, UTMA’s, Trusts) and does not apply to IRA or other tax-deferred accounts. Tax-loss harvesting involves taking investments worth less than what you paid for them (unrealized losses) and selling them (realized losses). Investment losses can help reduce taxes by offsetting gains and if you offset all of your gains you can deduct an additional $3,000 in capital losses against your ordinary income. By deducting the additional $3,000, an investor in the 37% bracket can save $1,110 in federal taxes. In addition, any realized losses over $3,000 can be carried forward indefinitely to future tax years to offset future capital gains. Therefore, an investor in the 37% bracket who had total unrealized losses of $50,000 in his or her portfolio can recover more than 1/3 of that loss by harvesting now and saving taxes in the future. We believe this is a good strategy to turn something positive from a negative situation. Many investors avoid tax-loss harvesting because they want to avoid selling something at a loss and possibly miss a rebound. We advise our clients to maintain their equity exposure even while tax-loss harvesting. You can do this by simultaneously selling your asset that has an unrealized loss and purchasing a similarly correlated asset to the one just sold. For example, if you have a large-cap U.S. stock fund with a loss, sell it and purchase another large-cap U.S. stock
fund with a similar risk and holdings profile. If you have an individual stock with a large loss, choose a stock in the same industry or sector or comparable market (i.e. sell Coca-Cola and buy Pepsi). With three consecutive double-digit return years in the U.S. stock market, most long-term portfolios will have few losses to realize especially if it is a low turnover portfolio. However, the two places investors may find losses in this current environment are international equities and fixed income. International stocks have underperformed U.S. equities for more than a decade. The S&P 500 is up 519% since 2009 while the MSCI EAFE is up only 163% over the same period. With the rise in interest rates over the past year, many bonds are worth less than what investors paid for them. The Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index was down year to date through October 13 by (1.65%). If you do choose to implement tax-loss harvesting, be sure to keep in mind that tax savings should not undermine your investing goals. Ultimately, a balanced strategy and frequent re-evaluation to ensure that your investments are in line with your goals is the prudent approach. n Respectfully Submitted CRA Investment Committee Matthew Reynolds, CPA, CFP® Robert T.
