A
s the saying goes, time sure flies when you’re having fun. It seems like we were enjoying summer just a few weeks ago. But with the change of seasons comes new opportunities. From holiday gift shopping to travel, this time of year is special for many reasons. In this issue of New Jersey Lifestyle, we bring you some unique ways to share the holiday spirit. Our features on cars explore a few options; from a shiny new Range Rover to collecting a classic car for those occasional summer drives down to Cape May or holiday shopping in Haddonfield. And if you like hitting the slopes, you have to check out our feature on Deer Valley and this upscale experience of luxury skiing at its finest. I know I have my plane ticket booked for 2020! There’s nothing more satisfying than personalizing your space for form and function, and Danielle shows us how we can re-imagine our space with some creative products from the Sunset Outpost in Margate. I had the pleasure of stopping by The Mud Girls Studio just above St. Michael’s Church in Atlantic City to meet up with Artist and Founder Dorrie Papademetriou. She introduced me to some of the women at the studio and the amazing works they create to sell and earn money. This is not your mother’s pottery; The Mud Girls are creating modern works of art that inspire and support those who can use a leg up. Accessories are the perfect way to put a little more of your style into your house. “It’s those little touches, like greenery or flowers, books, framed pictures and art that turn a house into a home,” Hartman-Hiltner says. It’s such an easy way to completely change the feel of the room,” Burns says. In cool months opt for thicker, softer fabrics and rich colors. “I love knits, velvets and wool. They are cozy and add texture and warmth to a room, when it’s cold outside,” Burns says. When the temperatures rise, seek out brighter colors and gauzier fabrics. “Lighter colors and thinner fabrics, like cotton and linen, create an airiness which is perfect for warmer months,” Burns says. NEW TRADITIONS Tips for a Safe and Healthy Holiday Season By Felicia L. Niven THE FESTIVE MUSIC, the sparkling decorations, the abundance of food … there’s so much to love about the holiday season. Yet as we age, this season can present its share of challenges. The snowfall we once enjoyed is now a slippery hazard. The Thanksgiving feast we once prepared is now a lot of work. And the inevitable losses — of mobility, independence and even friends and family — are not-so-gentle reminders that nothing stays the same. It’s time to trade in the old traditions. We can all enjoy this festive season on our own terms. We consulted the experts at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC) to find some of the ways that we can help our parents, grandparents and great grandparents fully enjoy the holiday season while staying safe and healthy. Here’s what they shared with us. It’s Not Just Cold. It’s Dangerously Cold. Even if it’s just seasonably cold, late fall and winter weather can be challenging for older adults. That’s because as we age, our core body temperature can drop, according to a study in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. It’s due in part to the thinning of the layer of fat under our skin that normally acts as an insulator. “This can be complicated by medication that you’re taking and any other medical problems you may have,” said Edmond Francisco, RN, director of nursing at SGLC. “Seniors with cardiovascular conditions may experience difficulties as constricted blood vessels make it harder for oxygen to flow.” He advises keeping the thermostat comfortably warm for your loved ones and limiting their exposure to outside frigid temperatures. New tradition: Watch holiday movies. Look at family scrapbooks. Find the best indoor holiday fun right in your warm and cozy living room. Medications Don’t Take Holidays. Neither Does Healthy Eating. For busy seniors who may be navigating a schedule that has them out and about, it can be tempting to skip medications. “Remember to bring pill boxes along with you, or otherwise take your medication first thing,” suggested Francisco. “Keep in mind that some medications interact with alcohol, and you may need to monitor your loved one during holiday parties.” While seniors may enjoy some holiday treats, “it’s also important that they follow dietary restrictions because making healthy choices will have them feeling their best,” said Jill LaBoy, director of food services at SGLC. “Make sure your loved one is 18

drinking enough water. As we age, we may not feel thirsty, but it is important to stay hydrated.” New tradition: Find new holiday recipes that accommodate your loved one’s diet. Use colors and décor to make healthy eating a festive occasion. Don’t forget to toast often with your water glass! Look Out for Trips and Falls. Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries in seniors, and a common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We regularly work with our residents, and those who come to us for rehab services, to improve stability and balance,” said Francisco. He offers some hints for those at home. “For seniors navigating new places during the holidays, it’s important to be cognizant of tripping hazards like throw rugs, uneven floors and low lighting. Also, know the impact of your medication. Sometimes side effects can compromise our stability. Finally, choose shoes with good traction and nonskid soles. Replace worn cane tips. Stay away from icy walkways and beware of slippery surfaces inside that may be created by people coming in with ice on their shoes.” New tradition: Bring the celebration to your loved one, so that he or she won’t have to worry about navigating a new environment. Loss & Love During the Holidays The holidays are supposed to be a happy time, but it’s inevitable that our senior relatives are experiencing some mixed feelings, according to SGLC Executive Director Alysia Price, LCSW, LNHA, CALA, CDP. “They may be missing friends or family who have passed away. They may be mourning their own loss of independence, reduced energy and mobility levels.” Staying busy and involved in holiday preparations can help to alleviate this sense of loss, she noted. Seniors can enjoy many of the traditional holiday activities, sometimes with a little help. This includes baking cookies, making decorations or planning a holiday party. “At SGLC, we bake with our residents,” noted Price. “We sit down together for Thanksgiving dinner and we ring in the New Year with a party.” “Start a new tradition of spending time with your loved ones — on their terms — this holiday season, and you’ll find that is the most precious gift of all,” she said. n

od Stewart wrote a song about them. Tina Turner is famous for them. Heidi Klum had hers insured. We rely on our legs our entire life, yet problems with blood circulation can cause serious issues that can lead to painful and unsightly varicose veins. More than just a cosmetic issue, varicose veins often result when valves in the leg veins become weak and damaged. These one-way valves are designed to keep blood flowing back to the heart. When they are damaged, some of that blood flows backward, causing blood to pool and enlarge the veins. This is known as venous reflux disease or venous insufficiency. A common condition, it is estimated that more than half of the people over age 50 in our country suffer from varicose

veins. In addition to age, other risk factors for varicose veins include being overweight, prolonged standing, family history, and pregnancy. People who suffer from varicose veins often experience pain and discomfort and can become self-conscious about showing their legs. Jeffrey Gosin, MD, FACS, is a vascular surgeon with Shore Vascular & Vein Center in Somers Point. He says his patients with venous reflux often complain of a burning sensation and aching heavy legs. The good news is that a state-of-the-art procedure for varicose makes treating them easier than ever before. Dr. Gosin says Endovenous Ablation, also known as the Vein Closure Procedure, is one of the most common techniques they perform to manage varicose veins. This FDA-approved,

minimally-invasive procedure treats venous reflux, often the underlying cause of varicose veins. Before the procedure, Dr. Gosin administers local anesthesia to numb the area. He accesses the vein through a small needle stick and then passes a catheter into the vein using ultrasound guidance. The ultrasound helps to identify the source of the problem that may not be seen with the naked eye. He then treats the vein with radiofrequency (RF) energy, which causes the diseased vein to collapse and close. Blood naturally reroutes to normal veins, reducing or eliminating the abnormal pooling of blood in the legs. The entire procedure is performed in an office setting in about 20 minutes. There is very little discomfort, no stitches, and prescription pain medication is generally not required. Usually, the pain begins to improve within a few weeks. In many cases, the veins disappear completely, or Dr. Gosin touches them up with other techniques that can reduce their appearance.

Varicose veins often result when valves in the leg veins become weak and damaged. Depending on your situation, the Vein Closure Procedure may not be needed, says Dr. Gosin. In less severe cases, he might recommend a conservative approach with exercise and compression stockings. In other situations, Dr. Gosin removes the affected veins through tiny incisions that are so small they do not require stitches. Patients experience only mild discomfort, they can walk immediately following the procedure, and they can return to normal activities within a day. There are other treatment options to close damaged veins utilizing chemicals, medications, and a new procedure using a special type of “glue� that is inserted into the vein to close it and reroute the blood. A combination of treatments may be used depending on a patient’s needs. While varicose veins may be a painful condition, spider veins are more of a cosmetic issue. Named for their spiderweb look, they are unsightly tiny broken blood vessels that spread out like branches on the skin of the face and legs. People affected by spider veins often feel self-consciousness and may avoid wearing clothing that shows their veins. For spider veins, Dr. Gosin utilizes a variety of

treatment options. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue which fades from view. In addition, he often uses the state-of-the-art Excel V laser system, a unique high-powered laser to deliver energy to the skin. Sparkle Town Fun The holidays are magical and merry in Haddonfield. By Dennis Hayes & Lisa Johnson
Downtown Haddonfield is an ideal spot to connect with friends.
H
addonfield’s charm shines year-round, but it sparkles brightest during the holidays. Starting Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, the historic town takes on a Dickensian feeling. Luminarias line the sidewalks as horse drawn carriages take to the streets transporting visitors back to historic times. The town's historic roots in New Jersey run deep. Located in Camden County, Haddonfield was settled in 1682 and formally incorporated in 1875. The Indian King Tavern, now a museum, is where New Jersey legislators met during the Revolutionary War. A sculpture of a dinosaur makes for a great selfie and commemorates where the first skeleton of a dinosaur was unearthed in North America. Its history alone makes Haddonfield a great road trip, but its bustling downtown area, with over 200 great shops and dozens of award winning eateries, puts it over the top as one of New Jersey’s best destinations. Lisa and I just had time for a quick half day trip and wanted to take advantage of a nice weekend. I convinced Lisa (who is not a beer drinker) that the King’s Road Brewing Company was a great place to start our adventure. Located in a historic structure built in 1777, the

location served as Haddonfield’s local tavern; known as Gibbs Tavern during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Brewing Company is just yards from the Indian King Tavern museum. In keeping with the town’s historic nature, the brewery named one of its more popular IPA’s (India Pale Ale) after another of the town’s historic taverns; the Blazing Rag. IPA’s are a bit “more hoppy,” meaning a little more bitter, than other beers. It’s an acquired taste, but one that beer drinkers learn to love. King’s Road Brewing Company has one of the widest selections of beers, ales, porters, and stouts than any other brewing company I’ve visited. It’s well worth a visit! This put us in the mood for a little English fare, so we crossed over Kings Highway to visit the British Chip Shop. Proprietors, Ian and Kate, were warm and welcoming. Ian’s in the kitchen using his 25 years of culinary experience to create traditional British dishes. His wife Kate runs the front of house, while also being a full time high school teacher and raising their two beautiful girls. During the season, they’ll be offering Christmas puddings, and other British desserts and pastries to enjoy there or take home. The British Chip Shop is also preparing traditional Dickens Christmas dinners, including roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Lisa and I enjoyed Potato Leek Soup and some Cheddar Mac ’n Cheese. For entrees, Lisa chose the Jumbo Haddock and Chips, Ian’s twist on traditional Fish & Chips, and I had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. The portions were huge. The Haddock was lightly breaded and flakey. The meatloaf was extraordinary, with a slight spicy kick. The gravy was created using some stout from King’s Road Brewing Company and

was out of this world. There are so many varied restaurants in Haddonfield to choose from; The Little Hen, a French Bistro, was highly recommended. Verona, with its Italian specialties, was another that shop owners we visited touted. Arguably the most popular seems to be The Bistro. Located at the corner of Tanner Street and Kings Highway, The Bistro is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has something for everyone’s tastes. They also feature In the Kitchen Cooking School, which offers holiday classes and Cookie Exchange parties, starting in November. We learned Haddonfield is a dry town, so bring your favorite bottle; some restaurants sell New Jersey wines, they just can’t serve it. We found that odd, but as long as we had our rose’ we were happy! As I said, the shopping is fantastic and now through January 1, the downtown turns into a magical village, with trees wrapped in twinkle lights and friendly merchants. Here you can feel good about supporting small businesses while avoiding the hustle and bustle of big box stores. Lisa, who is a tea drinker, fell in love with The Spice and Tea Exchange. We both were enamored at the English Gardener Gift Shop with its vast and distinctive selection of décor and gifts for the home and garden. Haddonfield also has a wonderful Farmer’s Market, open on Saturdays, from 8:30 AM to 1 PM, on Kings Court, a walking friendly area where cars are prohibited. With candlelight shopping every Friday, musical performances, and free parking, now through Christmas, Haddonfield knows how to put the happy in the holidays. Cheers! n

UTILITARIAN LUXE The Range Rover; embodying the ultimate combination of form and function By Elaine Rose

ou want the best of both worlds. You need a vehicle that can drive over any terrain, whether it’s a January snowfall or the rocky trail that leads to your favorite fishing hole. But you also like being pampered with luxuries such as leather seats, a sunroof, and a premium sound system. Enter the Land Rover Range Rover, a luxury SUV that’s generally acknowledged to be the best at cruising over all kinds of turf — and even wading through nearly three feet of water. Be aware that this jewel of the British auto industry will set you back a pretty penny. But it will make you feel like royalty. As Martin Padgett of The Car Connection put it, the Range Rover “leaves no luxury unmet… (and) can pamper any well-heeled driver, no matter if their wallet is exceedingly plump or merely thick.” “It’s just (as) at home bouncing along a muddy and rocky trail as it is cruising Rodeo Drive,” wrote the car experts at Edmunds. “It’s an obvious choice if you want something that can handle both pavement and trail.” Range Rovers have been on the road for half a century. The first model was introduced in 1970 by British Leyland. Between 1974 and 1987, the vehicles weren’t sold in the United States, and owners purchased them on the gray market. American sales officially began in March 1987. The Range Rover is now in its fourth generation, introduced in 2012. Some 2019s are still in stock, and the 2020s are coming in, said Eric Loftlin, who works in sales at Land Rover Cherry Hill. Customers can buy a vehicle off the lot, search for one at a nearby dealership, or order one built to specifications at the factory in Sulihull, England. The latter option takes a few months for delivery. Once you decide to buy a Range Rover, there is a dizzying array of trim level and engine choices. The base price for a 2020 Range Rover starts at $90,950, and the top-of-theline SV Autobiography trim can run over $200,000. The trim levels are too lengthy to list, as each has several sub-categories. Let’s just say there’s the Range Rover, the Range Rover HSE starting at $96,950, and the Range Rover Autobiography starting at $131,595. All seat five, have eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time allwheel drive. For about $10,000 extra, the long wheelbase version adds 7.5 inches of legroom to the rear seats. Even the base model is well-appointed with creature comforts, and more are added as you go up the trimlevel ladder. Grained leather seats, a sliding sunroof, a 13-speaker Meridian sound system, and heated front seats come on all Range Rovers. All trims come with front and rear parking assist, at the least. Trust us, you’ll need the last one. The Range Rover is 16.4 feet long and weighs nearly 2½ tons. Most versions have 31.8 feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which have a 60-40 split. Not as roomy as some large SUVs, but reviewers say it should meet most families’ needs.

Then there are the engines. Range Rovers have six different motors — four using gasoline, one hybrid, and one diesel — but not all are available with every trim level. The basic engine is a 3.0-liter, P360 Ingenium six-cylinder with 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. It can reach speeds of 130 mph and goes from zero to sixty in 6.6 seconds. At the opposite end is a 5.0-liter P565 V8 with 575 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It can go up to 140 mph and from a standstill to 60 mph in an impressive 5.1 seconds. Premium gasoline is recommended. All the gasoline engines guzzle fuel, getting about 19 mpg. For the more environmentally conscious, there is also a hybrid engine, with a stated 31-mile driving range on the battery, and a diesel engine, which gets about 27 mpg. But some reviewers say the hybrid’s battery range is variable and recommend the diesel if you want fuel economy. And despite its massive size, the Range Rover rides well. “The Range Rover does a convincing impression of an ultra-luxury sedan most of the time,” Padgett wrote for The Car Connection. “It can relax and peel off highway miles at a languid pace and leave four or five passengers inside blissfully unaware that the road beneath them sucks, or isn’t even there.” There are two drawbacks to the Range Rover, reviewers noted. One is its reliability rating. It needs repairs more often than other SUVs, and parts are pricey. And some say the infotainment system is slow to respond and takes some time to learn. There are two 10-inch touchscreens, one for entertainment and the other for handling the car. It can be made compatible with both Android and Apple CarPlay. US News & World Report ranked the Range Rover low among SUVs, largely because of its reliability and infotainment system. But writer Cory Trotter praised the Rover for its handling. “The Range Rover is a good luxury large SUV,” Trotter wrote. “Not only is it one of the class leaders in off-road prowess, but it offers … a comfortable ride and a fair amount of agility for a vehicle this size.” For those who covet the Range Rover label, but don’t want to spring $90,000-plus, Land Rover Cherry Hill’s Loftlin said there are three other models in the family. The Range Rover Evoque, the Range Rover Sport, and the Range Rover Velar have the prestige, but with smaller price tags. Most of his customers don’t want the Range Rover’s offroad capability for much more than getting out of their driveways after a snowstorm, without having to haul out the shovel, Loftin said. But many Range Rover buyers are repeat customers. “Once you drive one, it’s hard to get away from it,” he said. n

It’s a great time for enthusiasts to come together and revel in the joy of classic cars from all eras. Perhaps you’re a “gearhead” who has always been intrigued by the hobby but never quite had the time or money to get involved. Or maybe you’re newly-aware of car collecting and interested in learning more. The good news is, there’s no wrong time or way to get started! Let these tips, taken

from personal experience, help guide you into the wonderful and fulfilling world of car collecting. Try Before You Buy A classic car is a major investment that you don’t want to rush into. Make sure you do your homework. Yes, this means online research, which is easier than ever. You can also consider attending a local or regional classic car show. The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) has a N.J. chapter which puts on an annual show in Morristown. You can also look into local clubs, both formal and informal, and see about attending a meeting or Cruise Night to chat with other
hobbyists and receive advice. A great place to start is www.newjerseycarshows.com. You might find that you have a lot of local options available to you! Understand your Intentions (and Budget) Hobbyists come from all walks of life. There’s no wrong way to partake in classic car collecting, as you can be in total control over how you enjoy your vehicle. However, you should have an understanding of your interests and goals before you start shopping. Getting acquainted with local, experienced collectors is one way to help you figure this out. Maybe you’ll realize that having a car to take to casual Cruise Nights is sufficient. Or perhaps you want to show the car and dedicate a good amount of time to maintenance and cosmetic upkeep. These are all valid and fun options, but it helps to know your direction before setting off. You’ll also want to be smart when budgeting for the car purchase. Don’t forget to account for important add-ons, like classic car insurance, garaging and any possible repairs. Owning a classic car can be an ongoing project, so it’s also smart to have a slush fund set aside for general upkeep and surprise repairs. Shop Smart When you’re ready to start browsing for your dream car, the internet, once again, is a great place to begin. Choose among national websites dedicated to collector cars (www. hemmings.com is one example), forums which are brand-specific, or local listings like on Craigslist or Facebook. Each has its advantages. Or maybe a local club member can get you connected with a potential seller. Whichever way you choose to do your shopping, you’ll always want to view the car in person before writing the check. Ask one of your new auto club friends to tag along, a second set of knowledgeable eyes is very valuable. here are countless companies targeting us in the mail, social-media, and emails asking us to buy their latest widget. Most likely a widget that we don’t need and will be placed in next year’s yard sale. This holiday season, consider giving a gift of art in a way that supports our artists and art institutions. Sure, you can get great deals if you go down the rabbit hole of "wall decor" on your favorite websites, or in the decor cubicles at big box stores. Walk the crowded decor aisles with the towering monolithic shelving units looking for gifts and you will find a lot of calming landscapes or vibrant abstract images designed to match your couch. Or let’s be real cliché and think about buying the black-and-

while photographs of flowers or colorful images of cafes in Europe, all with the same facades. All these products are mass-produced and shipped in without thought or care. The artist gets nothing, and the retailers run to the bank. THAT TIME I STOOD UP JOSH GROBAN FOR BILLY JOEL (Josh, if you’re reading, I can explain.)

et me start off by saying that I love both Billy Joel and Josh Groban. As a piano player myself, how does one not idolize “the” piano man who is a songwriting genius and entertainer extraordinaire? Josh on the other hand is also a gifted writer with an unbelievably charming stage presence, whose golden voice literally brings people to tears. Yes, I may be talking about myself here, but there were others. I saw them! When it comes to music, most people will tell you there is nothing better than hearing your favorite artists live. I was 17 when I saw my first concert with my high school girlfriends. It was U2 and it was amazing. A few years later I caught Billy Joel in Philadelphia for what was being billed as his final tour. It wasn’t, but who can say no to more Billy? Since then I’ve seen countless shows from almost every genre of music from classical and rock, to jazz and country. What’s changed, however, is where I’m seeing them. Years ago, my friends and I would hope and pray that our favorite artists would make a tour stop in Philadelphia, the closest big city for those living in the Atlantic City area. We weren’t thrilled about the twohour trip, but it was the price you paid to see a musician or group that you loved. Unfortunately, that price was tacked onto what we also had to pay for the actual tickets, not to mention parking and tolls. Slowly the tides began to turn with a few big-name artists headlining at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Gradually more and more acts made their way to the shore, and today you’d almost be hard pressed to find a top selling artist who doesn’t book in Atlantic City. As crazy as it sounds, sometimes there’s almost too much talent for one person to handle, which is exactly what happened to me on the night that inspired the title of this article. It’s no secret that Josh Groban is one of my all-time favorite artists. He’s my dream duet partner as well as my dream soloist for a song I wrote about 15 years ago. I have followed his career almost from the start and had the thrill of seeing him early on at Caesars, at what may have been his first Atlantic City show. His voice blew me away, which is why I couldn’t wait to see him a few years later, this time at Boardwalk Hall. It was going to be a full girls night out with dinner and drinks before the show and then on to see Josh. What I hadn’t planned on was a
last-minute call from a friend who asked me if I wanted to be his plus one for an invite only show with Billy Joel at the Borgata. I was torn. Josh had a voice of an angel, but Billy was the piano man and I had already paid good money to see him on his first “farewell” tour. What if this really was his last time around? As much as I loved Josh, I knew he had a long career ahead of him, so I opted for Billy and he didn’t disappoint. Since then Josh has played several shows in Atlantic City that I didn’t have the chance to attend. In fact, I’ve missed a number of opportunities to see my favorite artists over the last few years, despite the fact that they were virtually in my own backyard. Admittedly, sometimes I’ve taken for granted the luxury of the close locale. I need to stop. Regardless of the season, the city consistently offers top notch entertainment; from big name headliners at casinos and Boardwalk Hall, to film and jazz festivals in large venues or quaint theaters like Dante Hall. The hardest part is making time to take it all in. Yes, we all have super busy lives with crazy schedules, but just think back to the last show or concert you went to and remember how it made you feel — the energy, the emotion, that intimate feeling that you’re part of something really special that will never happen again, at least not exactly in that way. Even if you have seen an artist more than once, you know that each show can have a different vibe. You never know which songs will be played or what might happen that may surprise you. Speaking of surprises, that’s exactly what I got when I finally did catch Josh Groban performing a few months ago. Interestingly enough, it was Billy’s show at the Borgata Event Center that forced me to give-up my ticket for Josh, and it was at that same venue where I saw Josh in July. Imagine my surprise when he sat down at the piano and started singing Billy Joel. Talk about full circle. I couldn’t help but think it was a sign that Josh would grant me a “get out of jail free” card for skipping out on him all those years ago and would tell me that, “It’s ok, I love him too. You’re forgiven.” Either way, it was another phenomenal show. I just wish it didn’t take me so long to get there. Lesson learned for the future. See you at the next show! n njlifestyleonline.com

Each day, women in recovery reassemble broken lives at MudGirls Studio in Atlantic City. This extraordinary organization allows them to earn, learn, and find a path out of poverty and dependency. By Marjorie Preston Dorrie Papademetriou
H
er name is Susan. An addiction to pain pills and a subsequent arrest cost her jail time and the custody of her daughter. It also led her to become a recovery coach for other women, rediscover a lifelong love of art, and find work that is leading her, step by step, to a productive, responsible life — including a reconciliation with her child. Like the other women of MudGirls Studio, Susan is using the lessons of the past to map out a brighter future. Fired Up for Change Founded by artist and designer Dorrie Papademetriou, MudGirls is located in a row of former classrooms at St. Michael’s Loft in Atlantic City, above the church of the same name. The church was built in 1912, and until 1988, its second and third stories housed a kindergarten and Catholic elementary school. After the school closed, the space was used for storage. Then, in 2017, St. Monica’s Parish opened the loft space to several community organizations: HR Recovery Initiative, which combats human trafficking; Recovery Force, where Susan was trained to become a peer counselor; and MudGirls, a working ceramic studio that employs women grappling with addiction, poverty, and sometimes homelessness. While paying them to turn out the MudGirls line of hand-crafted, small-batch ceramics, it teaches them self-sufficiency and imbues them with self-respect. The first day she came to Recovery Force, Susan met Dorrie, who asked her if she wanted a job. “I thought, ‘Wow, this is amazing,’” Susan says. “I had experience — I had studied art and used to throw on the wheel. So, I said yes.” A Hand Up With its scuffed tile floors, whitewashed walls, and chalksmeared blackboards, the space occupied by MudGirls looks like the school it once was — with a few differences. In a corner of one room is a big kiln, which fires the clay pieces at

temperatures that can exceed 1,000 degrees. Shelves are lined with the finished products: dishes, platters, bowls, vases, and more — some with a matte finish, some glossy. Every piece is finely rendered and one-of-a-kind, embellished with different patterns: starbursts, waves, keys, pressed ferns and other flora. A series of simple white bowls are imprinted with the words Believe and Hope. The studio produces delicate ornaments in the forms of doves and flower blossoms. Long tables are covered with tiles and other ceramicware in various stages of completion. It took 4,000 of those tiles to construct a dramatic, multicolored fireplace surround at the new Stockton University Atlantic City campus. The project won raves for its vivid reimagining of a seaside locale, with the tiles working together to create the look of bending reeds and undulating waves. That success led to another large-scale installation at the multimillion-dollar New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, which opened in September. For Susan, being part of such ambitious projects satisfies the artist in her. “I love my work,” she says, “and I really do take pride in everything I make.” The Turning Point Prior to forming MudGirls, Dorrie Papademetriou spent much of her professional life in the rarefied worlds of art, design, and fashion, working alongside industry icons like Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford, and directing global ad campaigns for brands like Louis Vuitton and Infiniti. Her life changed unexpectedly at a high-fashion photo shoot in Boston. “We were in the middle of Copley Square, a beautiful place with models and hair and makeup and this big entourage,” she recalls. “Then a street man came up. I remember his face to this day; he had been disfigured in a fire. And he came into the middle of this glamorous scene and said, ‘What about me?’” She calls those three words, uttered by a dispossessed and discarded street person, a “turning point.” The incident was “so jarring, so powerful, it was really hard
for me to go on with the rest of the day,” she says. “I started to question myself, to ask, ‘What am I doing?’ I knew I needed to rethink where my life was going. “I realized there was a reason I was given what I was given,” she says. “I had a passion for humanity and I was given it to help others.” She found her Atlantic City studio with the help of Cookie Till of Steve and Cookie's By the Bay in Margate and entrepreneur Evan Sanchez, co-founder of Authentic City Partners. They introduced Dorrie to Father Jon Thomas, pastor of the citywide parish, St. Monica’s, which includes St. Michael’s Church. “In exchange for studio space, the MudGirls made beautiful medallions to distribute to the first 500 guests of the 2016 return of the Wedding of the Sea Festival,” an annual rite of summer hosted by the parish, says Father Jon. After that, MudGirls “became the pioneer tenant of St. Michael's Loft.” Now, the former storage facility is “an incubator for new nonprofits,” he says. “The MudGirls’ work fits our interest in addressing the special difficulties of needy women in Atlantic City and cooperating with the city in making Mississippi Avenue the city's Arts Corridor.” Sanchez agrees, saying MudGirls “provides Atlantic City women in need with a hand up. The opportunity for the women to learn a valuable skill and create beautiful artwork is empowering and provides a path to a better life.” The Artists’ Way Several women who started with MudGirls at its inception in 2016 are still there, but some eventually move on. Donna, for example, is a formerly homeless woman (she prefers the term “hobo”) whose life has stabilized in her three years working at the studio. “My attitude is better,” she says. “I’m dressing like I used to dress. I’m filled with hope and happiness.” Donna will soon relocate to Washington, DC, to reconnect with her family. “I am not a hobo now, and I am not homeless,” she says. “This is my time.” Susan, by contrast, says she never wants to leave. “Thank God for Recovery Force, and thank God for Dorrie — without them, I wouldn’t be here. They saved my life.” Dorrie finds the work — and the changes that are a byproduct of the work — just as gratifying as her team members do. “I put every bit of myself into MudGirls, from emotional to spiritual, from the creative end to the business end,” she says. “It takes every ounce of what I am. And it’s becoming what I intended it to be.” n

talian Food … what immediately comes to mind when you hear these words? Hearty, cheesy, comforting, and delicious, just to name a few. From creamy rich dishes from Northern Italy to tangy and tomatoey red sauces from Southern Italy — everyone loves Italian cuisine. Traditionally, Italians serve meals in courses. Depending on the meal and the occasion, it can be up to seven plates from soup to nuts — figuratively speaking. The three must-serve courses in any Italian meal include; 1. Antipasto, the “before the meal” starter like long hots or minestrone soup; 2. Primo, a pasta or polenta as the first course; and 3. Secondo, the main course usually chicken, meat, or fish. would result in a list as long as a box of linguini all strung together! As a sampling, let’s take an orderly and delicious tour of some local Italian cuisine options, 1-2-3. POPPIN' BOTTLES! How to Select the Perfect Sparkling Wine or Champagne By Michael Bray
N
o occasion calls for something sparkling more than holiday parties and New Year’s Eve! From amateurs to experts, we’ll all be grabbing something with bubbles to celebrate. So, before you purchase something to pop — here’s what you need to know about sparkling wine and Champagne. What’s the difference between Champagne and sparkling wine? “Sparkling wine” is the umbrella term for all wines with bubbles. In order to be Champagne, the wine must be produced in Champagne, France using the traditional method of Champagne production (aka, “Méthode Champenoise”), as well as the traditional grapes for making it — Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. Wines produced anywhere else in the world, even if they are produced using the same method (e.g., think Cava from Spain), are not technically Champagne. There’s no hiding from the ubiquitous “yellow label,” Veuve Clicquot Brut, but I strongly recommend checking out Pol Couronne Brut ($45). Where exactly do the bubbles come from? There are two main methods of producing bubbles: the traditional or Champagne method, where the wine undergoes a secondary fermentation during which added yeast and sugar form CO2 bubbles (the yeast eats the sugar and expels alcohol and CO2). This process allows the wine to gain complex, biscuity flavors. In addition, the bubbles will be smaller, less aggressive, and last longer. The second method is the Charmat method, where the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in pressurized stainlesssteel tanks. The pressurized environment allows the yeast/sugar mixture to create CO2 more quickly, and the process is thus much more cost effective. Think Prosecco from Italy. Why is Prosecco so popular? Because they use the Charmat method (thus keeping labor/price down) and they taste great! Prosecco wines are made from the Prosecco grape, which is also known as Glera. These wines are produced in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. They are typically marked by aromas of flowers and stone fruit (peach, nectarine, etc.) with touches of vanilla. These wines are dry, although they do taste slightly sweeter than traditional Champagne. Try Bisson Glera 2018 ($18) as a beautiful example.
Is Cava more like Champagne or Prosecco? In terms of taste, Cava is far closer to Champagne, because it is made in the traditional method. Usually dry and comprised of indigenous varieties of, Macabeu, Xarel-lo and Parellada. Cava reveals characteristics of a toasty/yeasty mid-palate with vibrant and sometimes racy fruit. However, the beauty is in the price. An outstanding example is Dibon Cava Brut Reserve ($13). How do I know if a sparkling wine is sweet or dry? The terms used to designate the level of sweetness in sparkling wines are a bit confusing. The most common terms you’ll see on bottles are Brut Nature, Brut, and Extra Dry. Brut Nature is the driest of the bunch (“bone dry” is an accurate descriptor here); Brut is still very dry, and the most common style you’ll encounter; and Extra Dry is still dry, but not as dry as Brut. If you’re not satisfied and want to know a bit more, here’s the complete list of terms, in order from driest to sweetest: Brut Nature, Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Sec, Demi-Sec, Doux. The ripeness of the grapes and the amount of sugar added during dosage will impact the sweetness of the finished wine. A must try wine is Gruet Brut from New Mexico, made in the traditional method, and can be found locally at Joe Canal’s for $15 per bottle. What’s the difference between Blanc de Noirs and Blanc de Blanc? Blanc de noirs literally translates as “white from black.” This indicates Champagne made from “black” grapes (Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier). Juice obtained from dark grapes is still white; due to some contact with the dark skin of the grapes, this juice will take on a slightly yellower color than Champagnes made with white grapes. Blanc de blancs literally translates as “white from whites.” This term is used to designate Champagne made entirely from Chardonnay grapes. An excellent example is, Pol Couronne Extra Brut Blanc de Blanc ($56). Lastly, there is also, Rosé: These are produced either by allowing the clear juice of black-skinned grapes to macerate on the skins for a brief time or, more commonly, by adding a small amount of still Pinot Noir to the batch of sparkling wine. Rosé Champagne is one of the few wines that allows for the production of rosé by the addition of a small amount of red wine during blending. n

Luckily, Karen Sherman and Carmen Rone reacted differently when they entered the completely empty building that would become their first restaurant in Margate. Restaurant Report “Funky Fresh” food ever since that day. Running restaurants are part of Sherman’s and Rone’s DNA makeup, and the Atlantic City area has benefited from their talents. Before the birth of Tomatoe’s, Rone opened Carmen’s in Ventnor, followed by a second Carmen’s in Voorhees. Sherman and Rone joined forces in 1993 and then moved the original Tomatoe’s to its current location on the Bay in Margate 19 years ago. In addition, Rone and Sherman own and operate a gourmet take-out/catering business in Margate appropriately called (done.) — a great way to have a healthy and easy dinner that you pick up and warm up at home. Thus, the name — all done and taken care of for you. What continues to keep Tomatoe’s ripe and juicy, so to speak? For starters, the menu promises that it “…will never get boring.” Eclectic choices range from Crispy Octopus Tacos — using shells made from healthy-choice jicama to Cuban Pork Chops — complete with pumpkin gnocchi and mango to Brown Rice Buddha Bowls — topped with chicken, shrimp, or tofu for the vegetarians in the crowd. You want sushi and your date wants pasta? No problem. Sherman explains Rone’s and her culinary philosophy of pleasing everyone out there from carrot-loving vegans to Filet Mignon carnivores, “We both like to eat cleanly and Pacific Rim cuisine suits our palate as well as our customers. We keep some of the older tried and true menu items or we would get lambasted by our customers!” Regular customers are as plentiful at Tomatoe’s as is their sushi and maki choices on the menu — good, fresh, and interesting food options guarantees that! Ventnor resident, Fran Northridge, explains why she enjoys Tomatoe’s all year round, “We love to bring family and friends to Tomatoe’s because there is something to satisfy everyone. Where else can you go where your party can enjoy upscale sushi, a variety of bar food, as well as pasta and seafood. After dinner, we can stay for the music and the bar scene … it’s a great place to people watch.” Speaking of the bar scene, Tomatoe’s welcomes customers in a relaxed, yet

In addition to their daily fare, Tomatoe’s offers special events like Happy Hour options every day of the week as well as Social Sushi Wednesday, featuring new menu items and drink specials. Susan Cavanaugh, of Northfield, NJ, associates Tomatoe’s with a great night out for food and fun. Even her foodie friends from Manhattan insist on Tomatoe’s when visiting the shore. Cavanaugh elaborates on what draws her to Tomatoe’s, “We love the friendly bartenders and the fresh and very delicious late afternoon specials. That’s what makes us come back.” Knowing your customers, what they like and what they don’t like, is a must when you own a restaurant — something Sherman and Rone have lived by in their collective 38 years in the food business. “Our customers are generally very knowledgeable and health conscious. This fits in well with our own esthetic — let the quality of the ingredients shine.” In addition to knowing their customers’ culinary tastes, Tomatoe’s strives to use local vendors and ingredients. For example, the Margate Wedge Salad includes locallymade Water Dog Smoked Salmon on a bed of iceberg lettuce, red onion, tomato, and a cream cheese dressing. Daily innovations of the burrata appetizer use cheese from Claudio’s of Philadelphia — all subtle touches that please customers looking for fresh and local as part of their dining experience. Sherman sums up what she hopes her customers will experience when they come to Tomatoe’s, “Hospitality, a full belly, and a happy heart.” Whether you are craving Asian fare, like a sashimi appetizer, or a bowl of pasta, Tomatoe’s can surely please your palette. So, stop by for a drink and a bite to sample the eclectic menu items. And while you are there, don’t forget to thank Karen and Carmen for noticing that little ornamental tomato/tomatoe lying on the floor many years ago, and never considering the possibility of calling the whole thing off. n
