Local Greenery

here’s nothing like a little green to bring in the spring. Let’s face it, we don’t get outdoors as much in the winter; and the skies can be a little grey. Here in the Northeast, we make the most of the cold season with skiing, travel, entertainment, and a plethora of events we are fortunate to have here in our area. I’m personally looking forward to the bright colors of spring and the greenery that comes with it. In this issue of New Jersey Lifestyle, we travel to the green isles of Ireland and celebrate Irish culture with some of our local pubs with great food and a few Guinness pints. And hold on to your seats for a green ride in the Tesla Model 3. We head over to the Atlantic City Hard Rock Hotel and Casino to check out the all new Hard Rock Café Restaurant that features fresh ingredients. Health Contributor Robin Stoloff’s article on vaping will shed some light on this new phenomenon sweeping youth culture. Lisa and Dennis take us up to Belmar for a road trip that once again shows off a special spot in N.J. Check out our spring fashions and a great piece on Chazz Palminteri by David Spatz. Michael Cagno sheds some light on the robust local theater scene. While we're going green, check out the organic wines featured and obtainable at Passion Vines. So welcome spring, we know you're just around the corner. Sincerely,

LOC AL H A PP E NI NG S A Parade of Green
At the parade
CELEBRATE EVERYTHING IRISH at Atlantic City’s Annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade. On Saturday, March 9th, there will a sea of green shamrocks and merry leprechauns on the boardwalk as this fun holiday is celebrated in style. The first Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Atlantic City was held in 1986 and was organized by Al McMahon, who was the owner of the Circle Tavern in Brigantine and Joe Shields, a bartender who worked at the Surfside in Margate. Inspired by the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Philadelphia and the work of Jimmy Cavanaugh, Al and Joe enlisted the cooperation of local tavern owners. Members of the Irish Cultural Society and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick also joined the parade, and it has been an area tradition ever since.

Featuring hits and essentials from every studio album, 50 Years — Don’t Stop is the first exploration of the full history of the band on one album. On March 9, the Grammy-award winning band will make a stop at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. 14 Years
of Fun THE ATLANTIC CITY BEER & Music Festival celebrates 14 years of success this year and on March 29-30, festival goers will see nearly 600 different beers from 150 breweries. Participating breweries — from down the street to across the country — will showcase their unique libations and various styles. The goal of the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival is to promote and educate attendees on craft beer and the brew masters that create them. This event is the perfect opportunity for beer geeks, beer lovers, and beer beginners to speak to the brains behind the brews. Starting in 2006 with 3,000 people and less than 30 breweries, the original Atlantic City Beer Festival was born. Over the past 14 years, the event has undergone countless changes, added innumerable breweries to the roster, and to date has seen nearly half a million people in attendance.
Lennon Live in Somers Point LENNON LIVE, THE BALLAD OF JOHN will be presented on March 22 at the Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point, NJ. Recapture the excitement, the mood, and the frantic intensity of some of the most turbulent decades of modern times. You will flashback to historic moments of space exploration, protests in the streets, the raging war in Vietnam, “Flower Power” and “Peace and Love”, the lives and deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and the politics of Richard M. Nixon, as Lennon Live meticulously performs incredible renditions of John's legacy of decades defining songs that continue to be relevant today. 8

Honoring Harriet Tubman CAPE MAY WILL REBUILD a former pastor’s house as a tribute to the accomplishments of abolitionist Harriet Tubman. The building was previously the home of the Rev. Robert Davis, pastor of the Macedonia Baptist Church for many decades. The plan is to restore the home and turn it into a museum, which will include a permanent exhibit on Harriet Tubman, who spent time in Cape May during the 1850s raising money to help slaves escape from the South. The museum also will recognize the large African-American population that once lived in the area. Developers hope to complete the project by 2020 when federal officials plan to release the new $20 bill featuring Tubman’s face.

pring is an exciting season for fashion lovers. It marks the end of a long, cold winter when stylish outfits are forced to be covered up by seemingly endless layers of clothing and long puffy jackets. Eager to come into the light, chic outfits are joyfully debuted this season in all their glory. For both sexes, seasonal trends include a tribute to the classic styles we all love and esteem; the timeless shirtdress for her and the stylish, yet haphazard look of “Dad style” for him. The light, easy style of the shirtdress has justifiably earned a place for itself in fashion history. It’s one of the true greats — the enduring classics that somehow never lose their standing — like the timeless Little Black Dress for her or his classic leather bomber jacket. These fashion pieces will always be relevant, ultra-versatile, and undeniably chic. For 2019, the classic shirtdress has been reborn. Reimagined by fashion designers with exciting new colors, details, and innovative silhouettes, the shirtdress of today is dynamic and fashion forward. Slip on one this spring and experience firsthand the timeless versatility of statement-making style.
Striped Shirtdress, Alexa Chung Classic Shirtdress, Anthropologie
nnn The Classic Shirtdress If you want to make a chic, albeit a tad safe, style statement, a classic shirtdress is the ideal choice. You will look on trend while remaining true to your traditional fashion roots. An ideal choice is this blue and white striped Granddad Collar Shirtdress from designer Alexa Chung. Featuring a characteristic stripped pattern, the partial button front closures give a modern update to this classic version. With nearly a decade of experience designing clothes for other fashion houses, and with the vison of starting her own label, Alexa Chung took the plunge in 2016 and launched her namesake label in London. At the heart of the brand is Alexa’s vision; to create clothes that people want to wear. Combining Parisian chic with a New York edge, as well as the very British sense of humor, the label is inspired by everything from Jane Birkin’s insouciance to David Hockney’s stripy sweater. Alexa Chung prides itself on its unique approach to making clothes, marrying distinctive fabrics and prints with classic tailoring alongside more feminine designs. The result is a carefully considered, alluring combination of prim, racy, and rock ‘n’ roll, where frivolous party pieces interact with grown-up tailoring and classic silhouettes. nnn An Asymmetrical Hem You will long for the warm, carefree days of summer when you wear this enchanting white shirtdress from California designer Derek Lam. Perfect for your spring holiday suitcase or weekend jaunt to the beach, this oh-so-comfortable piece can go from day to night in a flash. Crafted in unique flocked silk, it blends classic style with luxury to create a gorgeous effect. With Derek Lam 10 Crosby, the beloved American designer puts a contemporary spin on his signature relaxed-elegant aesthetic. Launched in 2011 and named after the address of Lam’s former headquarters, the label appeals to the modern woman’s need for elevated, versatile staples. Standouts include simple, yet unexpected, silhouettes, like boxy poplin tops, open-back cashmere sweaters, and cinched-waist shirtdresses — pieces that transition seamlessly from workweek to weekend and from day to night.

Dad Style When one hears the term “Dad style ” for the first time, their mind automatically goes to visions of brown sandals paired with white knee socks and memories of those off-brand jeans in that funky light blue color only Dad seemed to have in his closet. Well, those embarrassing fashion faux pas from your childhood have been cleverly renamed and, believe it or not, are distinctly on trend. The new “Dad style” of 2019 incorporates items that formally were taboo to any fashionminded father. Items including patterned shirts, light-washed jeans, and pleated khakis are now all suddenly current; and dressing like a suburban Dad is both practical and hip. nnn Dad-Patterned Shirts Many of the new “Dad style” pieces are created with a slimmer silhouette than its previous counterpart, creating a more modern, updated look. This patterned shirt from the Haupt label available locally at Lou Marchiano For Men in Northfield features a slimmer shape and more a sophisticated, eye-catching print. Manufactured in Europe, the Haupt label creates shirts for confident men who have an awareness for aestheticism and an eye for detail. Haupt interprets trends, adapting these to add style elements of its own, which it integrates into wearable fashions that are modern and casual, and fit with utmost reliability. Defining itself by modernity, style, and a fanatical attention to quality, Haupt shirts are subtle, yet effective, and the company’s high-tech, innovative fabric engineering expresses their commitment to being on the cutting edge of shirt craftsmanship. nnn Dad's Light-washed Jeans After countless years of oh-so-dark indigo denim, light-washed hues are coming back in style with a vengeance, all thanks to the resurgence of “Dad style.” Top-rated by customers, the vintage light denim Essential Dad Jeans from BDG, exclusively available at Urban Outfitters, are the ones to grab. By Molly Golubcow IMAGINE A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY while volunteering at a local hospital finds himself invited to watch an operation. The surgeon tells him to put on a pair of gloves, and then proceeds to plop a recently removed gallbladder in his hands! He goes home thinking that was the coolest thing that has happened in all of his 15 years on earth. In addition to his memorable day at the hospital, the boy excels in science and is madly in love with the TV show surgeons on M*A*S*H. So, what happens next? If you are Frederick Coville, you have been smitten to enter the medical profession, perhaps even destined. By the time he is 16, Coville starts his university studies and graduates from medical school before his 25th birthday. While interning, he assisted a plastic surgeon in the ER working on a young girl severely injured in a car accident. That moment changed his life. Dr. Coville explains, “I watched in amazement as the plastic surgeon took this little girl’s face, which had been severely damaged and disfigured, and restored her to the beautiful little girl she was meant to be. doubt I knew that not only did I want to be able to do that, but somehow, I knew that I could be very good at it.” After post-doctoral training in New York including a Surgical Residency at Maimonides Medical Center and Plastic Surgery Residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, saying that Dr. Coville is “good” at what he does is an understatement. For the last 25 years, his reputation as a leading Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon precedes him. In addition, Dr. Coville is also the owner and Medical Director of Cornerstone Plastic Surgery in Linwood, NJ — bringing his knowledge, skills, and methods to the Atlantic City area. To truly understand Dr. Colville’s journey into plastic surgery, one of the longest training of all specialties, the good doctor has taken several paths — professionally and geographically. Although he knew plastic surgery was his calling early on, Dr. Coville decided first to spend time in Family Practice to get a “holistic” understanding of the human body. According to Coville, a plastic surgeon needs to be an expert on operating from head to toe including deformities, burn trauma, cancer reconstruction, and cosmetic procedures — the entire body. Acquiring Family Practice methods to further enhance his understanding of medicine and patient care, was only one aspect of Coville’s journey. So as a young man out of medical school, Dr. Fred, as he is known to his patients, combined his wanderlust and medical skills to practice medicine in over 15 countries on five different continents. Dr. Fred fell in love with the Caribbean and spent most of his time there, learning and healing, before landing in the South Jersey area. While living on a small island, Coville interacted with people of many different backgrounds, cultures, languages, and needs. He liked the laid back and nonjudgmental personalities he found in the Caribbean, as well as the opportunities to treat VIPs and politicians frequenting Richard Branson’s Necker Island. Coville reminisces on his island days, “I was able to care for a great many celebrities, VIPs, and politicians from around the globe. Since I was a drummer, I even got to jam with Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones when
he stayed at my house for a few days. Not bad for a kid from Brooklyn! It was a very fulfilling time for me.” Although some people look at plastic surgeons as frivolous, Dr. Fred always takes a compassionate approach to the imperfections on a human body — especially in children. Whether fixing a cleft lip of a baby girl in rural Mexico or rebuilding a little boy’s face badly burned in a fire in New York, he finds the results beyond rewarding. Coville explains, “I don’t want to minimize the work I do with adults, but it is children whose lives you can change for the better most by the quality of work and effort you put in.” Dr. Fred and Cornerstone Plastic Surgery believe there is “beauty in everyone” and it is their job to bring it out and create a more confident you. By using a “combined approach” of gradual and paced procedures rather than an unrealistic overnight transformation, Coville compares his treatment like cooking a wonderful dish — methodically combining just the right spices and ingredients. As a result, patients receive a customized approach that is effective, natural, and resulting in as little downtime as possible. So, what makes Cornerstone a cut above other plastic surgery practices? According to Dr. Fred, “Service, service, service!” Cornerstone feels the patient is always the most important person in the room — modeling the practice after the Ritz-Carlton motto of “ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen.” From your first phone call to the way you are greeted when you enter the office, professional and caring staff members focus on you. In addition, staff as well as Dr. Fred himself continuously train and keep up with the latest surgical approaches. Cornerstone prides itself in investing a great deal of money to make sure they have the best equipment available and a staff trained in delivering world class service. Coville strives to “…do everything we can to make sure that you are happy. It is really that simple.” When Dr. Fred is not practicing medicine, he loves spending time with his two sons and his wife. In addition to family time, his ecelectic interests include travel, dabbling as a percussionist (congas to be exact and careful not to hurt his hands!), and working on a novel — in his “spare” time. n

The Power of Music By Felicia L. Niven
THE STEADY BEAT OF THE DRUM filled the halls in Comfort Care. The group rhythm, strong and comforting, sounded an anthem for the dozen or so residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Gathered in a circle, they were kindred spirits, engaged in a moment that they will likely forget when it’s over. But for the time being, that steady beat was their lifeline, their connection to the present and to each other. The Comfort Care Residence is a dedicated unit at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC) for seniors with memory loss. A secure dementia care neighborhood, Comfort Care was carefully designed for the unique needs of these residents. Drum circles are among the many activities, which include bingo, cooking classes, aromatherapy, massage, art, crafts, games and pizza parties. Music, in particular, has a special connection for these residents. “If we start to think about how meaningful music is for us at any age, it’s not surprising,” noted David C. Burdick, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Director, Stockton Center on Successful Aging (SCOSA). “Music engages so many different areas of the brain that it is able to break through the pathology associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.” Dr. Burdick described the effect using a familiar analogy. “It’s like getting into the car on a cold morning and waiting for the defroster to clear the windshield,” he said. “In the same way, music breaks through the fog. It’s part of our long-term memory. You may not have heard a song in decades, but when you hear it, you can remember all the words, and where you were when you first heard it.” Lillian Shifrin, a former drum circle participant, loved Yiddish songs, according to daughter Norma Blecker. “We played them for her during her last days, and they seemed to soothe her,” she remembered. “Music has a wonderful power for everyone from babies to the elderly. It seems as if it awakens neurons in people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. I know that my mother especially enjoyed the drum circles at Seashore Gardens Living Center.” In 2019, SGLC will be expanding its music program in Comfort Care as a result of a grant that the home has received, to become a Music & MemorySM Certified Care Home. This involves training staff to use iPods loaded with personalized playlists to connect with, and bring joy to, those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. “These musical favorites tap deep memories not lost to dementia and can reawaken residents, enabling them to feel like themselves again, converse, 18

socialize and stay present,” according to Music & MemorySM. “Alzheimer’s and dementia patients may become more lucid for a short time after the music stimulation,” noted Dr. Burdick of Stockton. “The personalized playlist is very important to make that connection. Our playlist is deeply embedded in helping us bond with others. It’s why a dementia patient can sing happy birthday even though she no longer talks.” SGLC Board Member Steve Chang was excited about the possibilities of the new grant. He’s been following the music program at SGLC ever since Bruce Springsteen’s drummer, Max Weinberg, led a drum circle there, years ago. Chang was also instrumental in getting the Home a player piano to help engage residents. “Every person has special pieces of music in their lives, whether it’s Mozart or Motown,” said Chang. “Now I’m a pharmacist by training, and I’m looking at it both clinically and from a quality of life perspective. Music therapy has been shown to reduce agitation and improve quality of life for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia. What if we could reduce the medication needed by using the therapeutic power of music? If we could find out those special musical pieces from the families, and play those for the residents, it can make a real difference.” “It can be very stressful to see the decline of a loved one,” said Alysia Price, LNHA, CALA, LCSW, CDP, Administrator, SGLC. “But we can continue to share meaningful moments with our loved ones. Programs like Music and Memory can help. We’re excited to be able to bring it to our families.” SGLC is seeking donations of used iPods for the program. To read more about it, visit musicandmemory.org. Family members and caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or dementia also are invited to attend Alzheimer’s Support Group meetings at SGLC, 22 W. Jimmie Leeds Rd., Galloway, N.J. on the third Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. The group is free and open to the community. n

Up In Smoke
M The Vaping Epidemic in Our Kids – A MustRead for Parents By Robin Stoloff
att Cox, from Barnegat, New Jersey, started vaping in college. A former social cigarette smoker, he switched to vaping because he didn’t like the dirty smell of cigarettes and thought vaping would be safer. He started with a larger tank system vaping device, but then he learned about the Juul through high school kids who worked with him at a restaurant. Juul is the name brand of a small batteryoperated vaping device that resembles a flash drive or USB stick. Matt’s starter pack came with Juul pods and small cartridges containing a liquid that is heated to create a vapor. It included flavors such as crème brulee, cherry, mango, and tobacco flavor. After just one puff, he felt light-headed, but “not in a bad way.” He was likely experiencing the feel-good effect of dopamine released in his brain due to nicotine. He had smoked cigarettes for a few years and he never felt as if he was addicted. Yet, after buying his first Juul, he realized it became a part of him. It was always in his hand, and he would vape before bed and go to sleep with it at night. He says, “At first, it would take me three or four days to go through a pod, then a pod every two days, then a pod a day. They say one pod has the same nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, but I think it’s more.” Time and again he justified his vaping saying, “At least I am not smoking cigarettes.” As time went on, he began to feel terrible. He was coughing all the time and got winded when he ran at the gym. He felt as if he had fluid building up in his lungs. His girlfriend pointed out how much he was “Juuling” and finally shamed him into quitting. This past October, he gave it up cold turkey. He suffered symptoms of withdrawal such as extreme headaches and continued coughing for months after he quit. It was difficult, but today, his coughing has finally subsided, and he feels great, not to mention the fact that he is saving $60 a week he used to spend on his Juul habit. The Vaping Epidemic Matt was actually older than many of the young people who start vaping. The rise in vaping among teens has risen so drastically that the FDA and Surgeon General have now declared it an epidemic.
It happened, literally, under our nose. Vapes have no odor and those that resemble pens or flash drives are difficult for parents to detect. It is not just harmless water vapors, these products use an “e-liquid” that may contain nicotine, as well as varying compositions chemicals such as propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease, and volatile compounds such as benzene, found in car exhaust, and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin and lead. The liquid is heated to create an aerosol or vapor that the user inhales through various battery-operated devices. Vapes, vaporizers, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), hookah pens, and e-pipes, are all forms of electronic nicotine delivery systems, known as ENDS. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), between 2017 and 2018, the use of e-cigarettes among high school students increased by 78% and by 48% among middle school students. Now, more than 3 million high school students use e-cigarettes — up from 220,000 in 2011, making them the most commonly used tobacco product among our youth. The 2018 CDC study revealed the primary reasons teens use these products are because the candy and fruit flavors are appealing to them, their friends and family are using them, and they think e-cigarettes are less harmful. E-cigarettes have been touted by their makers as devices to help adult smokers kick the habit. However, school officials, struggling to control an explosion of vaping among high school and middle school students, fear that the devices are creating a new generation of nicotine addicts. Many of these kids who would never dream of smoking cigarettes are now vaping, believing that it is a safe alternative. As a mother of an 18-year-old high school senior, I hear first hand from my son how prevalent it is in his school. He noticed that the kids on one of his sports teams who vape became a lot more winded than before and had to stop or slow down as they ran across the field. Apparently, students vape in the bathroom, in the halls, even in class. Because vaping has no odor, it is much njlifestyleonline.com

H E A LT H W AT C H easier to hide than smoking, and the small size of the Juul makes it simple to conceal in the palm of a hand. Vaping Effects “The American Lung Association remains extremely troubled about the rapid increase of youth using these products,” according to Jennifer Hobbs Folkenroth, National Senior Director, Tobacco for the American Lung Association. “We have repeatedly called upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase their oversight and scrutiny of these products to protect kids.” She says there is increasing evidence that proves the harm of e-cigarette products. “Comparing the safety of e-cigarettes vs. a cigarette is a fool's errand because the cigarette is the most deadly consumer product on the market. You really must look at the harm of the e-cigarette and public health.” The research shows e-cigarettes contain dangerous chemicals that are linked to irreversible lung damage or cancer. In addition, e-cigarettes can damage the developing brain of teens. “Specifically, in adolescents, we know there are high levels of toxins that are going into the body. The brain is not fully developed until about 25 years old. Nicotine is highly addictive, and it alters the brain’s chemistry, forever changing the brain at a young age.” Experts say this can lead to problems affecting memory and attention. The addiction is not just physical. Hobbs Folkenroth explains, “There are other components to addiction, many times overlooked — behavioral aspects such as routines and rituals associated with using these products. There is the handto-mouth oral fixation as well as social and psychological parts to addiction that present significant challenges.” A Multi-Billion Dollar Industry Much of the blame for the tremendous growth in vaping falls on the companies who make these new electronic nicotine delivery systems. Juul is by far the biggest company controlling 75% of the market. As usual, it always comes down to money, and there is a lot to be made. Vaping is now a multibillion-dollar industry. It has exploded so quickly, that regulations have not kept up. As with opioid addiction and other public health issues, the problem grew faster than 22

the solution. To illustrate how lucrative this industry has become, at the end of 2018, Altria, the parent company of tobacco giant Philip Morris USA (maker of Marlboro cigarettes), purchased a 35% stake in Juul for almost $13 billion. As they suffer a steep decline in cigarettes sales and their stock price, Altria now has a whole new addictive product to market. While most e-cigs contain nicotine, Juul has one of the highest concentrations in the market. To make it worse, they offer their pods or cartridges with flavors such as fruit flavor and mango, appealing to teens. The company insists that its vaping products are for adults only who want to wean off cigarettes, but a new report from Stanford University discovered many of the company's images, videos, and social media posts features young people. Juul even launched a flashy online campaign asking people to become to become “Juul influencers,” in which every day people get paid to help drive sales on social media. Juul executives explained that its initial advertising “was intended for adults, was short-lived and had very little impact on our growth.” Like cigarettes in the fifties, vaping is marketed and accepted as cool in the younger generation. It took many decades to get teens and even adults to finally understand that cigarettes are harmful and anything but cool. The fear is that this new generation of vapers are now addicted before they even realize the harm they are doing to their bodies and brains. In October of last year, the FDA conducted a “surprise inspection” of Juul’s offices, seizing thousands of documents. In anticipation of an FDA crackdown and stronger regulations, Juul ended sales of flavored vapes in retail stores and renamed certain flavors to be less appealing to the younger market. No longer will they claim their Juul flavor crème brulee is like a “dessert without a spoon.” In addition, they have closed U.S-based social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Yet, their practices have been appalling and it is too little, too late. Their message has already been sent and received. Many of us remember the Camel cigarette marketing campaign that targeted kids during the late eighties to mid-nineties. Camel used a colorful, fun cartoon character, Joe Camel, that significantly boosted the brand’s market
share among youth smokers and became almost as identifiable to six-year-olds as Mickey Mouse. Fast forward to today and the tobacco industry continues to use the tactics they’ve used for decades to market to youth, but with significantly fewer restrictions and more outlets, such as social media. According to the American Lung Association, advertising by e-cigarette companies increased from $6.4 million in 2011 to $115 million in 2014 and we are witnessing the results. More than one in two middle and high school students have seen e-cigarette ads in retail stores and two in five have seen online ads for e-cigarettes. While cigarette manufacturers are prohibited from advertising on television and from sponsoring events and other marketing activities, those rules do not extend to the marketing of other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and cigars. Switching is Not Quitting Recent TV ad campaigns feature adult smokers who are quitting after switching. That is almost like starting to smoke marijuana to quit drinking. It is just trading one addiction for another. The American Lung Association is striving to navigate tobacco users to cessation methods that are proven effective such as counseling with the Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking program, in addition to seven FDA approved smoking cessation medications. Hobbs Folkenroth notes, “Without a doubt, this one-two combo undeniably results in the highest possible success rates of quitting smoking and maintaining a tobacco-free lifestyle. Switching to e-cigarettes does not mean quitting, which we know is very difficult. The Lung Association has decades of experience in successfully helping smokers to quit using proven methods that are safe and effective. The FDA has not found any e-cigarette that is safe and effective.” The Annals of Internal Medicine published a study that found smokers who used e-cigarettes to help them quit smoking were less likely to quit than those who did not use e-cigarettes. Only 10.1% of the smokers who used e-cigarettes had quit smoking after six months compared to 26.6% of smokers who did not use e-cigarettes. In addition to the health costs, the habit is financially very expensive. In New Jersey, a Juul device is about $35. A package of
four pods is approximately $16. For pod-aday vapers, that is almost $30 per week. The Juul starter kit is about $50 and comes with the Juul device, a few pods, and USB charger. It is unimaginable that our underage kids, for who vaping is illegal, can so easily afford and obtain these devices and refills. Somehow they find a way to get them and pay for them. That demonstrates the undeniable dominance of an addiction. How To Quit The American Lung Association offers several youth programs to help educate youth on e-cigarette use, empower them to be leaders of tobacco-free community efforts and quit tobacco products, if they currently use. These programs include Not On Tobacco (voluntary youth cessation program), Intervention for Nicotine Dependence: Education, Prevention, Tobacco and Health (INDEPTH – an alternative to a school suspension or legal disciplinary action), Teens Against Tobacco Use and state-based youth leadership groups. To learn more call them at 1-800-LUNG-USA or visit Lung.org Today, Matt is thankful that he ended his cycle of addiction to vaping. His message to teens about vaping, “You should not be doing this … you should not even think about doing this. It’s not cool.” As parents, there are so many issues facing our kids that concern us, and now we can add vaping to the list. Just like drugs, alcohol and smoking, it important to educate ourselves on e-cigarettes and vaping and make sure we discuss the dangers with our children and teens. There is no greater gift to give our children than the knowledge, love, and support they need to live healthy and productive lives. It starts with us. n

veryone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, when cultural appropriation is not just sanctioned but celebrated. At this time of year, all the totems are on display: shamrocks and shillelaghs, leprechauns and tam o’shanters, pots of gold and pints of ale. But there’s much more to Irish culture than funny hats and beer. Welcome to a mini-Cook’s Tour of the Emerald Isle, where castles are almost as common as pubs, and history is alive on every corner. Irish Rovers Are you a first-timer? Start your adventure in Dublin. This beguiling capital on the River Liffey isn’t Ireland any more New York City is the USA. But it’s a great jumping-off point, and you can plan day trips from there. Kim Santoro of Mixed Travels (avoyanetwork.com) says you’ll see more — and see it more efficiently — if you start with a group tour. But leave some time for solo wandering too. There are a couple of fun, easy ways to see a lot of Dublin at once (and you won’t have to worry about driving on the “wrong” side of the road). Our picks: • Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tours. These big green double-deckers visit many of the city’s major landmarks: The National History Museum and National Gallery; Trinity College, home of the illuminated Book of Kells; St. Stephen's Green, an exquisite medieval garden
smack-dab in the middle of town; the Irish Emigration Museum, known as EPIC; the Guinness Storehouse and Teeling Distillery; and more. With a 24-hour or 48-hour pass, you can jump on and off the bus at will. • Viking Splash Tours. Layer up before you climb aboard one of these open-air cruisers. The former World War II amphibious vehicles, or “Dukws,” take you on an entertaining tour — on land and water! — past Christchurch and St. Patrick’s Cathedral; the Dublin Docklands; the city’s picturesque medieval and Georgian sections; and other landmarks, including those included on the bus tours. You’ll get your own Viking helmet (complete with horns), and plenty of amusing patter from the exuberant guides. Don’t miss Dublin Castle, built in the early 13th century on the site of a Viking settlement, and Kilmainham Gaol, where Irish revolutionaries — including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising — were imprisoned by the British. Magically Delicious In the past, it was hard to find great cuisine in Ireland (or the U.K. as a whole, for that matter). That’s all changed. And Dublin in particular has made an effort to up its gastronomic game. Just to mention a few: On the fine-dining side, there’s the Michelin-starred Chapter One on Parnell Square. Chef Ross Lewis calls it “an Irish restaurant with njlifestyleonline.com

LIFEST YLE TRAVEL an international standard.” The seven-course tasting menu includes terrine of wild game with preserved cherries, marinated foie gras and brioche (it’ll set you back at €115, but your taste buds will thank you). In Dublin, a pub crawl is essential. Try Devitt’s on Camden Street for local delicacies (grilled bangers, fish and chips) paired with your favorite brew. Other pubs we love are the Merry Ploughboy, which serves up traditional music and dancing nightly, and the Brazen Head, Dublin’s oldest public house, dating to the 12th century. Sláinte! Old as the Hills Ireland calls itself “the best small country in the world,” and that’s no blarney. This fair isle is home to just 5 million souls. The whole country, north and south, could fit quite snugly inside the state of Indiana. Though it’s compact, you’d be hard-pressed to see all its marvels in one trip. To make the most of your time, consider traveling the famous Ring of Kerry. This 111-mile scenic route around County Kerry includes rugged coastline, breathtaking mountain passes, Iron Age forts and centuries-old castles, and villages with names like Molls Gap, Sneem, Ballinskelligs and Portmagee. It’s possible to drive the Ring of Kerry in a day, but why hurry? Slow down and savor the sights, including: • Killarney. This hospitable town among spectacular rolling hills was one of Trivago’s top tourist destinations for 2016. Treat yourself to a horse-drawn “jaunting car tour” through beautiful Killarney National Park. • MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. This mountain range includes Ireland’s
highest peak, Carrauntoohil. In a wild Pagan rite, each year the town of Killorglin hosts the annual Puck Fair, in which a wild mountain goat is crowned king. • The Skellig Ring. This narrow 20-mile stretch, which doglegs slightly off the Ring of Kerry, epitomizes the Wild Atlantic Way, with its broad windswept beaches and otherworldly landscapes (and I do mean “otherworldly” — moviemakers chose this spot to film parts of Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Rock of Ages Have a little more time? Set your cap for Ireland’s “Ancient East.” Here you’ll find the Rock of Cashel, the historic home of St. Patrick, who came here as a slave, drove out the snakes, and gave the country its most iconic figurehead. The Cliffs of Moher in County Clare are among Ireland’s most beloved landmarks. Readers of the Irish Independent voted this natural wonder the country’s best visitor attraction for 2019. Be careful with those selfies: the cliffs are almost 400 feet high at Hag’s Head, and reach a pinnacle at O’Brien’s Tower — a giddying 702 feet. Finally, it’s almost mandatory to visit Blarney Castle in Cork, where you can not only kiss the famous Stone of Eloquence, but see other attractions like the Witch’s Kitchen, the Wishing Steps, the Dungeon and Badger’s Cave. As you tour the land of poets and patriots, keep in mind the old Irish saying, “Two people shorten the road.” May the road rise to meet you. n Despite her rather WASP-y name, Marjorie Preston is a proud daughter of Ireland, with a family tree full of Finnertys, Connerses and McClintocks.

A Tesla For Everyone
Tesla Model 3
This elite automobile brand has recently entered the mainstream market, and consumers couldn’t be happier. By Elaine Rose
LIFEST YLE ON WHEELS
TESLA: IT ISN’T JUST FOR WELL-HEELED TREE HUGGERS anymore. With the introduction of the Model 3, people of moderate means can kiss their gas stations goodbye and step into the most prestigious brand of all-electric vehicles. Elon Musk’s company introduced the five-seat Model 3 in 2017, in hopes that the less expensive option would lift Tesla out of its much-publicized financial woes, Eric Jhonsa wrote for The Street in late January. Production of the base model, with an MSRP of $35,000, is expected to ramp up in a few months. In the meantime, somewhat more expensive versions of the Model 3 are on the market, though you’ll probably have to order yours in advance. There are three trim lines to choose from: The Mid-Range battery has one motor and rear-wheel drive, with 258 horsepower and a range of about 260 miles between battery charges. It will retail for $35,950. The Long-Range battery variation has dual-motor, all-wheel drive, provides 340 horsepower, and can go about 310 miles on a single charge. It lists for $42,950. The Performance option, with a base price of $53,950, has the same engines as the Long-Range, but with 450 ponies in the battery pack. Tesla claims it can go from zero to 60 in a headspinning 3.3 seconds. The transmission is one-speed Direct Drive, which requires no shifting. All versions have a glass sunroof, which Tesla says can withstand the weight of two full-grown African elephants. For the time being, the Mid-Range comes with a mandatory premium package, upping the cost, but equipping the car with goodies such as heated seating with 12-way adjustable front seats, a premium audio system, and heated side mirrors. But if you have concerns about reducing your use of fossil fuels and leaving a cleaner planet for your children and grandchildren, reviewers say the Model 3 is worth serious consideration. U.S. News & World Report ranked the 2018 model second out of 22 luxury sedans. “Everything Tesla has done up to this point has built towards the Model 3 — a genuinely affordable mass-market (electric vehicle),” the British publication Top Gear wrote, giving the Model 3 an 8 out of 10 rating. “And it’s been worth it.” It is a “truly well-engineered car,” and drivers should “prepare for conversations at every set of traffic lights, waves from grown men and women and traffic behaving erratically around you,” the Top Gear reviewers wrote. Despite its nearly two-ton mass, the Model 3 drives almost like a sports car thanks to the low center of gravity, as the battery pack is located beneath the seats. “The Model 3 behaves like a proper sports sedan on a twisty road, aided by minimal body roll and a slightly rear-heavy … weight distribution,” Edmunds noted. “The ride is firm without being harsh, but you do hear plenty 30

of noise inside the cabin as the tires thwack and thrum when driving over pavement imperfections,” Drew Dorian wrote in his review of the 2018 model for Car and Driver. To eliminate some of that noise, some car mavens recommend shelling out some extra bucks for the optional 19-inch wheels instead of the standard 18-inchers. If you’re looking to travel in the lap of luxury, the Model 3 may not be for you. The interior is somewhat spartan, with only the basic creature comforts. But adults can easily fit in the front, and the rear seats aren’t too cramped for those under 6 feet tall. Driving the Model 3 takes some adjustment. Nearly all the controls are located in the 15-inch touchscreen, which can distract the driver from the road. While it can be operated with a smartphone app, the system is not compatible with Android Auto or Apple Car Play. “Although the basic driving controls couldn’t be simpler, this isn’t a car you fully understand in the first five minutes,” Top Gear noted. “Like a new smart phone, you need to commit some time to learning the shortcuts, locating the settings you might need and engraining them in your brain.” Another downside is that charging is no longer free. Owners can buy a supercharger for home use — making it much faster than plugging it into an electrical outlet — and pay at Tesla charging stations located all over the country. On the plus side, the Model 3 has all the latest safety gizmos, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it a perfect five out of five stars for safety. Consumer Reports expects its reliability to be above average. Interested? There are two ways to get your hands on this baby. The first is to logon to tesla.com and order one to your specifications. The car will be assembled in Fremont, California and delivered in four to six weeks. You’ll have three days to drive it before the sale becomes final. The other option is to head to the dealership in Cherry Hill, where you can test drive one of their cars. They may be able to procure what you want from another dealer within a week. Either way, you won’t be sorry. “For those who can afford it, the smallest and least expensive Tesla offers day-to-day usability (and) surprisingly fun road manners,” according to Kelley Blue Book. “And an intriguing glimpse of a gasoline-free future.” n Elaine Rose was a staff writer for the Press of Atlantic City for nearly twenty-two years, and during that tenure covered every subject except sports. The show runs from June 26th through August 2nd. Afterwards is a new comedic play called “Sidekicked” by Kim Powers. The play centers on the night Vivian Vance, who plays Ethel on “I Love Lucy,” finds out the show is getting cancelled and now has a lot to get off her chest. The theater transforms into a dressing room and sound stage from the 1960s. The performance runs August 7th through September 20th. Cape May Stage is often called the premiere theater in South Jersey because of the talented team of artists. Sylvia’s cast include actor Bill Timoney who comes directly from the Broadway hit, “Network.” He is joined by Kate McCauley Hathaway and Andy Prosky, who are favorites and have a long history with the theater. Tony Award nominee, Sally Mayes, plays Vivian Vance in “Sidekicked” written by Emmy Award and Peabody Award winner Kim Powers, with costumes by Tony Award winner Jess Goldstein. Both plays are directed by four-time Emmy nominee Producing Artistic Director Roy Steinberg. Centered in the Hammonton Arts District and under the direction of Ted Wioncek III & Ed Corsi, this nationally-recognized, awardwinning regional theater produces more than 160 live performances each year, including full-scale Broadway caliber world premieres and re-conceptualized revivals. Projects include The New Works Development Series, a play reading series dedicated to nurturing local playwrights; a traveling Theatre for Youth Audiences program, specializing in providing arts education to schools in underserved communities; an Annual Fringe Festival, a 3-day street fair and theatrical marathon, featuring multiple eclectic productions, a beer and wine garden, pop-up art, food, live music, and street performers; Innovations Factory, a core of theming artists’ dedicated to experimental storytelling through medium advancing technology; and Eagle Theatre Conservatory, a year-round tuition based theatrical institute for all ages and levels of professionalism. Innovative technology is a centerpiece of the theatre’s productions. Digital projections, mechanical winches, moving walls and other techniques are regularly used to augment immersive storytelling. The introduction of Theme Park Theater, amusement park style effects providing an experiential feel on stage and in the audience, was invented and trademarked by Eagle Theatre’s Innovations Factory. The New Jersey Fringe Festival is produced
by the Eagle Theatre every August in Hammonton, featuring productions from New Jersey and around the nation. Eagle Theatre Conservatory teaches theatre arts to a wide range of ages and abilities. Anchored in the historic downtown of Blackwood, the Mainstage Center for the Arts is the only children’s theater in New Jersey. Since 1989, Mainstage has been led by executive director Joe Bretschneider and producing artistic Director Ed Fiscella. With classes in acting, voice, dance, and musical theater, Mainstage uses the performing arts as a catalyst for individual expression and growth. Home to the Summer Stage program, along with the Harmony and Encore Show Choirs, Mainstage Center for the Arts enriches the quality of life for its South Jersey community. Mainstage Center for the Arts provides a creative, vibrant, and nurturing environment for youth and adults to enrich the quality of life for its South Jersey community. With a new semester just beginning this spring, Mainstage provides diverse classes such as, Check out Acting for the Camera, a class for children in grades 6th-12th. Students will learn how to bring out the best of themselves at a commercial audition. This includes tips, techniques, and personalized coaching on how to deliver a professional commercial audition. This class is ideal for the student who wants to become comfortable in front of the camera and loves to perform. Each week students will be filmed, and the commercials will be watched in class for feedback from their peers and the instructor. Orchestra conductor, Michele Mariotti so eloquently states, “Art has an undeniable force, and it is necessary for human life. At the same time, it cannot be imprisoned and strangled by the utilitarian rules of the marketplace.” Theater in southern New Jersey is alive telling stories that interpret the past and prepare for the future. Without institutions like Cape May Stage, The Eagle Theater, and Mainstage Center for the Arts, there would be no stage to express the human experience. n Michael Cagno is the Executive Director of the Noyes Museum of Art and the Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums.

An Updated Bronx Tale
Chazz Palminteri
Travel back in time to the Bronx as one actor’s amazing life story is touchingly recreated. By David J. Spatz
Palminteri performing in his one-man show A Bronx Tale at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City this past October
A small, almost imperceptible smile formed on the face of Chazz Palminteri as the actor stepped into familiar territory. He sat down on the steps of the front stoop of his home on East 187th Street, near the intersection with Cambreleng Avenue in the Belmont section of the Bronx. Off in the distance, he could see — actually, he smelled it first — the cloud of sweetness that enveloped Gino’s Pastry Shop, a neighborhood fixture for years. As Palminteri looked out over the street in front of the three-story brownstone, he spotted a couple of old Italian men puffing away on their De Nobili cigars. They were muttering in an unusual tongue that fused the native language they brought from the old country with the more informal and colloquial-laced dialect they’d picked up on this side of the ocean. In another time, the neighborhood elders could have been witnesses to the mob hit Palminteri witnessed right in front of his house when he was just 11. Looking back, Palminteri wonders if that was the turning point in his young life, along with some sage advice from his mom and dad about remembering right from wrong and good from bad. “My mom and dad really gave me a strong foundation. My father always said the saddest thing in life is wasted talent,” Palminteri says. “He said, ‘If you want to be something, don’t make stupid mistakes.’ And I guess I made the right choices.” *** The stoop on which Chazz Palminteri sat was 100% real, at least as far as stage sets go. That’s because the actor who lived the real-life version of his hit play-turned-movie-turnedBroadway musical “A Bronx Tale” had brought his one-man show to South Jersey, just as he’s been doing for more than 10 years. The set is basically the front of a series of five or six attached brownstones commonly seen in New York City. Talking to him first on the set of the play, then later on the phone, gave the 66-yearold character actor some time to reminisce about his childhood. He reflected on the old njlifestyleonline.com

Hometown Charm

Sunset at Belmar Fishing Pier
ometimes, when you’re road tripping, there’s nothing better than a road trip back home. I’m originally from Belmar, in Monmouth County. The name Belmar is a corruption of the Italian words “bel mare,” meaning "beautiful sea” and beautiful it is! Belmar is a short drive from New York and Philadelphia and a popular summer destination with its natural and recreational resources. Belmar boasts some of the state’s best events too; such as their annual Seafood Festival, May 17-19, and Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, March 3, which is one of the state’s largest. What began in 1974, with approximately one-thousand spectators, has grown immensely into a celebration of everything Irish with more than 5,000 marchers and 200,000 spectators! Belmar also has some fabulous shops and restaurants. It’s home to bake shops, a vintage vinyl store, cigar shop, and more. Foodies will delight in the varied dining spots. One of its trendier is, Brandl, a wonderful BYOB restaurant with tempting weekly dinner specials. Chef Chris Brandl is constantly experimenting seasonally with his menu, working with local farmers and purveyors to procure the finest, most select ingredients, and is recognized for innovative takes on classic American cuisine. 40

We started with the Crispy Calamari and Tuna Tower. Brandl makes some of the best, crispiest calamari we’ve ever had with whole grain aioli and sweet marinara. The Tuna is served over avocado salad with a light wasabi crème fraiche with caviar. Although it was “Fresh Catch Friday”, I chose the Filet Mignon with a mushroom potato gratin and truffle demi glace. Lisa loves the Lazy Lobster, the chef’s signature dish, with chunks of meat floating in asparagus risotto, poached in vanilla bean butter. We ended on a decadent note with Brandl’s signature dessert, a White Chocolate Fresh Raspberry Soufflé, which was utterly incredible. After dinner, we hopped over to the Anchor Tavern to meet up with a few natives (“Belmartians”) I know who still live in the area. Anchor is a classic casual Jersey Shore bar scene with live music, great bar food and, when warmer, outdoor sidewalk seating. Although home to some wonderful Inns; we stayed at my uncle’s house while he was in Florida. Saturday, we woke to a cold morning, but not cold enough to keep us off the boardwalk. Belmar is one of New Jersey’s most walkable towns. We started our stroll along Inlet Terrace, where a collection of beautiful homes shares a lagoon with access to the Shark River Inlet. Reaching the boardwalk, Lisa noted

LIFEST YLE ROAD TRIPS that my hometown has some of the nicest white sand beaches on the Jersey Shore. We walked east, down to 1st Avenue to where the historic Belmar Fishing Club is located. Originally chartered in 1909, the private club is a true shrine for sportsmen. It sits next to Belmar’s Nature Beach Preserve or “Shell Beach” as many of the locals call it. The Preserve is the only natural, unmanaged beach between Sandy Hook National Park and Island Beach State Park and is home to many shore birds that nest in the spring. It’s a protected area where foot traffic is allowed only on the trails and dogs are prohibited. Heading south we passed the former location of the 8th Avenue Pavilion, where I had my first summer job flipping burgers and making pork roll, egg and cheese sandwiches. Unfortunately, the pavilion was taken out by Sandy, but memories remain. For lunch, we decided to visit a local mainstay, Kelly’s Tavern. Although it’s not in Belmar, the legendary Irish tavern is right over the Route 35 Bridge in Neptune City. Opened in 1949 by Ed and Mabel Kelly, the tavern was moved across the street in 1959 when

business outgrew the original spot. A large hand-painted ancestral map of Ireland covers the ceiling above the bar and authentic banners and coats of arms line the walls. The crowd is always boisterous, the staff jovial, the food is fantastic, and the Irish spirit instantly transports you to the Emerald Isle. After lunch, we walked back to Belmar’s downtown, along F Street. Things have changed quite a bit since I was a kid. The iconic Freedman’s Bakery, located in the same spot for 60 plus years, is now the Beach Haus Brewery. Schatzow’s Variety Store is gone, replaced by Rite Aid. Yet, some things have stayed the same. Don’s Pizza King is still serving the best slices on 9th and F Street on Pyanoe Plaza and Taylor Hardware, owned by my childhood friend Joe Connor, is still on 10th and F Street, where he’s always ready to answer a home repair or gardening question. F Street is still where you can find anything you need without heading to the strip malls. Dinnertime was soon upon us, so we picked up my parents and headed for one of our favorite restaurants at the shore, La Dolce Vita.
njlifestyleonline.com
The location is spectacular, right on Ocean Avenue, across from the boardwalk; when the weather is right it’s a great place to sit outside and soak in the beautiful beachfront. La Dolce Vita is family owned, so once inside you feel as if you’ve been transported back to the hills of Sicily. Co-owner Nick Fuccilli, who 14 years ago convinced his Uncle Giuseppe to open the upscale restaurant alongside his already popular casual eatery, La Terrazza, greeted us like family. He told us they had a special not to be missed, a stuffed artichoke, that he promised would blow us away. He also recommended the night’s special escargot appetizer. We took his advice and also ordered a house specialty, a homemade meatball that is the size of a softball. Immediately hot bread served with dipping oil and eggplant tapenade was on our table and quickly devoured. Nick’s recommendations were spot on. The artichoke and escargot were exceptional; so much so that when the meatball arrived stuffed with fresh mozzarella and served with Pomodoro sauce and ricotta, we each took one delicious bite and had it wrapped to save room for entrees. Knowing you can’t go wrong with the pastas, Mom and Dad shared the Rigatoni alla Bolognese. I ordered the Crab Cakes, topped with citrus mango chutney, and Lisa the Chilean Sea Bass al Pistachio, served over wild mushrooms risotto with sautéed spinach and white truffle butter. Everything was pristinely prepared, expertly served, and handsomely presented. Belmar sometimes gets a bad rap as being a summer vacation town, but if you’re a native, like me, you know there’s a Mayberry feel to this seaside haven. Bob and Doris Hayes lend to that small-town charm as they can be found most days and evenings sitting on their porch, two blocks from the ocean, chatting it up with neighbors and passersby. Even this morning leaving town, as I dropped off some Beckman’s Deli breakfast sandwiches, my parents were there, enjoying the unusually warm winter morning. Ah yes, there is nothing like a road trip back home. Well remember my friends, there’s a lot to see and do in beautiful New Jersey. So, until next time; keep on tripping and send us your suggestions! Keep It Real
What We’re Missing by Not Being True to Ourselves By Michelle Dawn Mooney I HAVE A CONFESSION. I’m not a natural brunette. Well, at least not completely. I think I was 19 when I noticed my first stray gray in a sea of chestnut brown hair. By the time I was in my late twenties, I was seeking the services of clever colorists to keep things looking “natural” and I’ve relied on their talents ever since. While I don’t exactly look at this as being a lie per se, in a way I guess it does resemble a misconception of reality. After all, I’m not exactly who I present myself to be, which is someone who would be sporting a look rivaling Cruella Deville if it weren’t for the guided hands of a hairdresser. In a world where fake lashes, fake tans, and so-called fake news have become part of our vernacular, the line between fantasy and reality can easily be blurred. Each year, Americans spend upwards of $15 billion dollars on plastic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, and more than $50 billion in the beauty industry; with men steadily sharing more of the market. As 44

evidenced by the opening of this article, I’m all for getting a little help in the looks department, but where we really miss out by choosing superficial over authenticate is where it counts … within. I told my husband at the beginning of the year that my 2019 resolution would be more of a mantra than a specific task intended to complete, or a vice to refrain from. I decided from here on out I was going to challenge myself to keep it real. He looked a bit perplexed at first, not really understanding what I meant. To be honest, I was/am still forming my definition of the statement. It’s a notion that doesn’t exactly have strict parameters. While I would never consider myself a fake, I am well aware I have fallen victim (more times than I can count) to pretending to be something I’m not. In a quest to be accepted and loved, we often feel obligated to push ourselves a little too hard and spread ourselves too thin, all the while giving off the perception that we totally have things under control. Well, the
truth is I don’t. No one really does. Most of us are continually sidelined with pressure from our friends, family, and workplace to do more. Yet, even when we know we’ve reached our limit, many of us pretend that we have it all together and can juggle x number of tasks and commitments with the ease of a Cirque de Soleil performer appearing to float from one position to another with the utmost of ease as they spin around at death defying heights. We figure it’s just something we must do. What’s the alternative? Saying no; admitting our limitations and resigning ourselves to the fact that we are indeed human and not superman or superwoman? Yes. Too many times we become so wrapped up in tackling things on our to-do list we fail to stop and think of why we’re doing them in the first place. Do they really need to be done, or do we just “think” they need to be done? Yes, there are certain obligations that are more or less mandatory. But what about the times when we find ourselves
stressed out, racing to an event or rushing to complete a task at the risk of our own physical/emotional well-being because we don’t want to let someone down or we’re too afraid of what people might think? Remember, it’s okay to say no if it means saying yes to a healthier you. With spring cleaning in full swing, now is the perfect time to not only take inventory of our closets, but our lives. What really matters? What tasks, events, appearances should we hold on to and which ones should we ditch from our calendars? Keep in mind, even the mandatory chores sometimes need to be pushed to the back of the closet. That overflowing laundry basket will still be there tomorrow, but opportunities to spend time with your family on a night when everyone miraculously has an open schedule may not. We can’t control our hectic lifestyles, but we can control how we react to them. When we’re honest with ourselves about where our priorities should be, it becomes a little easier to navigate through the craziness. So, I hereby challenge you to keep it real … with ourselves, with our food, and with our loved ones about our feelings, our ambitions and even our limitations with chasing them. Imagine the freedom that comes from holding nothing back, that is aside from maybe a few wiry gray hairs; but that’s just between you and me. n

(Hard) Rock Around the Clock People visit the Hard Rock Café for the exciting memorabilia but return again and again for the delicious fare. By Molly Golubcow 54

Who knew back in 1971 that the first Hard Rock Café in London would grow to 185 restaurants in 75 countries by 2019? From New York to New Delhi, that massive electric guitar hanging outside each property has become one of the most notable brands in the world. It may just be an electric sign, but it blares like an amp announcing that the place is rockin’ and ready to feed you signature dishes surrounded by Rock & Roll photos and memorabilia.
In Atlantic City, the recently renovated Hard Rock Café, located in the once-upon-a-time Taj Mahal Hotel & Casino, rocks and rolls day and night. From traditional breakfasts to soup-to-nuts dinners to midnight (and later) munchies, the Hard Rock Café serves up rocker magic to locals and tourists alike. Ch-ch-changes… Although the Hard Rock Café has been in Atlantic City for over 20 years, the menu was updated along with the $500 million renovations to the entire property in 2018 — hotel and casino. According to Leigh Merritt, Vice President of Food & Beverage for Hard Rock International, “The menu has changed quite a bit from the original menu.” Merritt proudly lists the new additions including new flatbreads like Smashed Avocado and BBQ Chicken baked to perfection in a newly added wood-stone oven. Another new item, the California-Style Cobb Salad, hits the perfect pitch with fresh, grilled chicken, avocado, black beans, fresh corn, and pomegranate seeds. In addition to food changes, beverages have not been overlooked. For example, imagine rocking and rolling while sipping the new Passion Fruit Mai Tai complete with an edible orchid or a glass of Sparkling Blackberry Sangria which Merritt boasts has quickly grown to a top-selling cocktail for the restaurant. Because Hard Rock Café focuses so intensely on their food and drink, customers in the Atlantic City café and across the globe crave and rave about Hard Rock. Absecon resident, Sue Vocci, explains why she returns for the food and ambiance. “From the moment you walk into a Hard Rock Café, you are greeted with a friendly face that says we are glad you chose to dine with us. From appetizer to dessert, the professional service is top notch and you are treated like family.”

Burger — a 1/2-lb Certified Angus Beef® burger topped with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, onion rings, lettuce, and vine-ripened tomato. Today, many such menu items are still available and ordered by the thousands each day. However, as time changes so do customer palates. To accommodate current culinary preferences like fresh, local, and organic, Hard Rock has not missed a beat (pun intended). Merritt explains the philosophy behind Hard Rock’s choices for ingredients and style, “Fresh is pretty simple for us. If it comes in fresh to our back door, then and only then do we consider a product truly fresh. Our cafes get deliveries up to seven days each a week because of our commitment to fresh, high quality food and beverage.” In addition, Hard Rock has taken signature menu items and improved them. For example, fresh steak burgers were introduced to the Atlantic City location. What makes them “fresh?” Rather than purchase packaged meat, Hard Rock makes their own ground beef daily in their onsite burger grind room. Atlantic City Twist and Shout Hard Rock keeps their brand consistent in Atlantic City, but also adds a dash of local uniqueness to the menu. Merritt explains, “Our cafes and their general managers pride themselves on being stewards and ambassadors that represent the local community, so wherever we can, we try to bring those beloved items to life.” Whether in Atlantic City or elsewhere, the cafes are specifically curated by memorabilia teams focusing on the surrounding area. In fact, planning memorabilia begins 12–24 months in advance of a cafe opening to ensure each cafe pays tribute to the culture and tradition of that region or area. As a result, you will see belongings from legendary and contemporary musicians including Lady Gaga’s hand embellished outfits, David Bowie’s outfit worn for his last appearance as Ziggy Stardust, and boots worn by Michael Jackson during his “Bad” tour. And, keep your eye out for Jersey boy stuff belonging to favorites like Bon Jovi and Springsteen as you stroll through the property! In addition to paying careful attention to memorabilia details, food gets a Jersey twist as well. An example on the Atlantic City menu is the New Jersey Breakfast Sandwich — classic Taylor ham, egg and cheddar cheese on a locally-baked Formica Bakery brioche bun, served with Hard Rock breakfast potatoes. And speaking of potatoes, Merritt won’t
give out all of their secrets, but does share a tidbit about their Grammy Award-like hash browns, “We start browning and caramelizing our hash browns at least 30 minutes prior to a guest ordering, so before you even sit down to breakfast, we are anticipating your order to bring you the best hash browns in New Jersey.” Rock & Roll Never Forgets… What people love about Hard Rock Cafe is that there’s something for everyone. Whether you want some fall-off-the-bone tender Baby Back Ribs or a heaping plate of nachos, the “perfect” rocker meal awaits you — combining all the elements that Hard Rock Cafe brings to life — the food and drinks, of course, but also the people, the music, and the energy in every café. Hard Rock Café lives by the “Love All, Serve All” motto. When it was founded 48 years ago, the restaurant was one of the first restaurants in London open to all classes of people. Merritt sums up the Hard Rock philosophy of inclusiveness that leadership never forgot, “Today, more than ever, Hard Rock embraces that motto wholeheartedly, so that wherever you are, and wherever life finds you, you know there is a place you can go that is waiting with open arms.” n

What is Organic Wine? By Michael Bray
I
love questions, especially in a retail setting such as Passion Vines. If you listen closely enough, you understand not only what the customer wants, but more importantly, what they value. What I can tell you firsthand is that customers want organic. Why? Because they value health and source integrity. Here’s what you need to know: Wines labeled “made from organically grown grapes” consist of grapes that are harvested using sustainable agricultural practices. Simply put, these are grapes grown without the use of artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or chemicals in the vineyards. Wines labeled “organic” consist of grapes that are harvested without the use of artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or chemicals — in the vineyards and in the winery. This includes the winery’s fermentation tanks, ageing barrels, and even the bottles themselves. Lastly, organic wines cannot contain sulfur dioxide added during winemaking. Sulfur dioxide is a natural element that is a byproduct of fermentation and is also present in soil. All wines have some degree of naturally-occurring sulfites. Wines that are organic (or biodynamic, think organic plus astrological and lunar influences) do not have additional sulfites used as a preservative. Unfortunately, our labeling laws require just the words, contains sulfites, on the label and do not differentiate between the naturally occurring and the additional. Here’s why it may be confusing: The overwhelming majority of organic wines have no indication of such status on the label. In some countries, the certification process can be expensive, ridiculously strict, or even incongruous to making quality wine. In turn, incredibly passionate producers that practice the most intense sustainable, organic, and even biodynamic methods, 58

do not get certified. Yet the wines they produce may be more pure, natural, and tasty than some winemakers that promote their “organic” qualities. Here’s a trick if you don’t have someone to help: A great indication of purity comes from the back label of the wine, where the wine importer is noted. Passion Vines represents importers that deal exclusively with natural and traditional producers, which invariably means organic. Some of these importers are Fleet Street, Vias Imports, Jorge Ordonez, Louis Dressner, Skurnik Wines, Polaner Imports, and others. Next time you’re drinking or shopping imported wine, turn the bottle around and see who imports it. If you like the wine, I strongly recommend you try other wines by the same importer. Lastly, know this … there are wines made in a boardroom and wines made in a vineyard. I will never deny the need to make a profit; that’s a critical piece to sustainability. However, I will always defend and fight for integrity, and by the questions I get, it sounds like a lot of people feel the same way. n Drink Passionately,

Good Things Await at the Pub
Five exceptional Irish Pubs that will leave you celebrating in true Celtic style this St. Patrick's Day. By Alyson Boxman Levine McCullough's Lucky Shake
T
hey say everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, and with this special holiday just around the corner, now is the ideal time to plan your annual celebration. You’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to the Emerald Isle when you celebrate in true Celtic style at one of the area’s best pubs. A delightful new Irish pub, Josie Kelly’s Public House, recently opened in the Somers Point restaurant district, conveniently situated in the historic building that was once home to the area’s renowned and much-loved Mac’s Restaurant. The brainchild of husband and wife team Dermot and Kathleen Lloyd, Josie Kelly’s is a true Irish pub; from the authentic food and décor to the welcoming feeling you get upon entering the establishment. “My husband grew up in County Limerick in Ireland,” said Kathleen, “and Josie Kelly’s is inspired by the pubs he grew up with.” The couple met when Kathleen, a hairdresser, cut Dermot’s hair and, according to the Ventnor native, it was a connection from the start. “Opposites attracted,” Kathleen revealed. “We are so completely different that we complement each other. In our working style, he is a little bit more laid back. I never shut up, so it works out pretty well.” The pub’s Irish roots extend to the kitchen staff as well, as Chef Rick Semonchik is first generation Irish-American, and his family moved back to Ireland for a portion of his childhood. His creative, traditional Irish recipes fill the expansive menu and transport patrons deliciously across the pond. The mouth-watering Seafood Chowder is named for Chef Rick’s mother, and the Beer and Guinness Pie is a true Celtic treat. Another nod to Ireland on the menu is the lovely Dublin Lawyer, so delicately balanced and delicious; featuring Jonah crab claws, crab meat, shrimp, lobster, and mushroom risotto, all in a whiskey cream sauce. For St. Patrick’s Day, the pub’s celebration will continue over the two-day weekend with live traditional Irish music, bagpipers, Irish dancers, and lots of traditional cuisine. “The thing that sets us apart from other Irish pubs is the fact that Dermot is from Ireland; that gives us a bit of an edge,” explains Kathleen. “We give customers something more traditional, and that’s something they can relate to. We named it the Public House because it is for everyone; from the 80-year-old man quietly sipping his Guinness at the bar to the newly-turned 21-year-old ordering shots for all her friends, and everyone inbetween.” This St. Patrick’s Day, everyone can get a taste of Ireland with food specials at McCullough’s Pub & Restaurant, Egg Harbor Township’s only Irish Pub. Celebrate like a true Irishman and join friends both new and old for food and fun. McCullough’s will channel the true spirit of the Irish by serving authentic cuisine like potato leek soup and fish and chips in a light Guinness beer batter. Chef Kenny Klein’s mouth-watering choices include a corned beef and cabbage dinner with parslied potatoes and Irish lamb stew with carrots, celery, baby potatoes and pearl onions accompanied by buttered egg noodles. At the bar, enjoy an emerald green McCullough’s Lucky Shake, made with Irish

whiskey, coffee liqueur, green crème de menthe, and vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream, while overlooking the McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links. Serving hearty and innovative food, McCullough’s Pub satisfies the hungry and those who wish to share delicious large and small plates. The pub is open seven days a week, with a happy hour to 6 PM. “We have a poker and dart league, and entertainment on Saturday nights featuring live bands,” said Thomas Sullivan, General Manager. “Our loyal customers are people that live in the area, but we also have a lot of summer visitors that keep us busy as well. Being a golf course, we have the best of both worlds. All are welcome. It’s a great place to come in for a drink or a nice meal.” And this Irish pub will certainly be busy for St. Patrick’s Day weekend. “We have a bus that leaves from here and brings you to Atlantic City for the parade. Then, we bring you back here for the party,” reveals Sullivan. “We will feature Irish music and entertainment, Guinness and Jameson Irish Whiskey specials, and, of course, the delicious Irish dishes. Also on the schedule for that Saturday is their Annual St. Patrick’s Day Golf Tournament, featuring the Police vs. Firefighters. If you’re visiting the casinos on St. Patty’s Day, be certain to stop in Rí Rá, located on the second floor of the Quarter at the Tropicana. The name of the pub — translating roughly to devilment, good fun or any sociable activity that improves with fine food and a nice pint of Guinness or dram of whiskey — ideally describe the lively establishment. The pub's interiors were salvaged and restored in Ireland prior to being shipped to Atlantic City and showcases Fish and Chips at Josie Kelly's

a unique and genuine Irish pub atmosphere. This hotspot, for locals and visitors alike, offers an impressive lineup of live music, a comprehensive drink list, and fare that defies pub standards. Stop in and say “dia dhuit” (hello in Gaelic Irish) to General Manager James Jaye from Wexford, Ireland while you experience their delicious Cottage Pie, featuring ground beef, peas, carrots and onions, with a rich brown gravy, over broiled mashed potato and cheddar cheese. “Stop by for a pint and a chat and I’ll be sure to recount a few tales from the lovely town of Wexford for anyone willing to listen,” reveals Jaye. If you’re looking to experience a taste of the old Atlantic City this St. Patrick’s Day, look no further than The Irish Pub, located on James Place & the Boardwalk. For the Monopoly enthusiasts out there, it has been said the red hotels used in the game are actually based on the architecture of The Irish Pub. In fact, The Irish Pub’s history dates all the way back to the 19th century. Serving as a speakeasy back in the days of prohibition, the building has survived numerous hurricanes, two world wars, and countless high and low tides … along with the appearance of countless celebrities, including the Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio. The location’s current evolution was created in 1972 by Richard and Cathy Burke. Today, The Irish Pub is known for its lively Shepard Pie at McGettigan’s 19th Hole Tavern
tavern and restaurant, which deliver a consistently authentic and fun entertainment experience staffed by friendly and well-trained employees. After the St. Patrick’s Day parade, or any day you’re in the area, drop in and experience the great food and fast friends only such an historic locale can bring. Located in Galloway and rounding out the top five pub list, McGettigan’s 19th Hole Tavern caters to dedicated locals, as well as out-of-towners. Situated dangerously close to the Seaview Hotel and Golf Club — close enough for guests to sneak over for the alluring Irish pub atmosphere — the tavern offers live music and merriment on St. Paddy’s Day. Try their Guinness French Onion Soup and their Irish Nachos, fries topped with bacon bits, Monterey jack and cheddar cheese. You will fall in love with their Garlic Steamers, little neck clams served in fresh garlic, butter, and white wine. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, experience a local favorite, their authentic Shepard Pie, featuring fresh minced beef and vegetables served over mashed potatoes, with garlic toast. No matter where you choose to spend your St. Patrick’s Day this year, one thing is for sure; you will certainly experience a truly enjoyable meal. These fantastic local pubs will be serving authentic Irish fare and festivities on that special day, and throughout the entire year as well. And remember, there are no strangers in Irish pubs, just friends you haven’t met! n

Year-End Outlook 2018 MARKETS IN 2018 TURNED OUT to be a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, but ultimately finished on a very sour note after a horrible 4th quarter. We began 2018 with optimism, having just come off a tremendous year in 2017 which saw 20%+ equity returns. Many investors were hoping the Tax Cut & Jobs Act of 2017 would continue the stock market rally for another year. January of 2018 appeared to do just that as the S&P 500 gained almost 6% for the month. The rise was short lived, however, and the market declined just under 12% over the next two months before bottoming near the end of March. From there, the stock market was either flat or up for the next six months and the S&P 500 ended September 30 with a year to date gain of 10%. It seemed we were well on our way towards another good year, until October decided otherwise. The market began selling off in early October with concerns over rising interest rates and by the end of October, worries about the growing possibility of a trade war with China caused the S&P 500 to give up most of its gains for the year. We saw a slight rebound in November before December hit and again, continued worries about trade and rising interest rates (Federal Reserve) sent the S&P 500 down another 10%. The S&P 500 index finished the year down -4.38%, but when compared to the rest of the equity indices, outperformed. The Russell 2000 (U.S. Small Cap Index) and the S&P 400 (U.S. Mid Cap Index) both finished 2018 down -11% and the international indices, the MSCI EAFE Index and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, finished down -13% and -14% respectively. 2018 was also not a great year for bonds. Rising interest rates caused a decline in the value of outstanding bonds, offsetting the interest earned for the year. The Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index finished the year flat at 0.01% return (which was actually an improvement over the ytd return of -2.38% as of 10/31). High Yield bonds lost about -3% in 2018 and 66

International Corporate Bonds were down about -7% for the year. Floating Rate bonds managed to finish slightly positive, up about ½ of 1%, and municipal bonds finished with the strongest returns in fixed income up 1.28% for the year. With all of that said, what lies ahead for 2019? There has only been one instance in the last 30 years (the Dot Com bubble burst and 9/11 period from 2000-2002) where the S&P 500 has had negative consecutive years, so if history is any guide, a positive market is in the forecast. So far, the markets are off to a good start. As of this writing, the S&P 500 is up just over 8% in the first 5 weeks of the year. We believe how the rest of the year goes will depend mostly upon three things: Does the U.S. get a trade agreement with China? Does the Federal Reserve continue to raise rates this year, and if so, how many increases will they do? Finally, expectations are that the U.S. and Global economies will slow this year. If that is the case, by how much? The answers to these questions will more likely than not dictate what kind of year 2019 turns out to be.
