“One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter.” —–Henry David Thoreau

What We Love About South Jersey in the Winter

E

veryone heads to South Jersey in the summer. After all, our unique mix of sand, surf and summer fun is hard to resist! But I’ll share a little secret. The winter months offer their own blend of charm and excitement. Here are just some of the reasons why we love South Jersey in the winter.

No Reservations Required: Those world-class restaurants with the long lines over the summer are walk-in ready during the winter months. You’ll find many of your shore favorites open year-round, and some even offer winter discounts. Looking to get your Boardwalk fix? You can grab a slice of pizza at Manco & Manco on the Ocean City boardwalk at 9th Street on weekends throughout the winter, weather permitting. Local Attractions Open Year-Round: There’s no need to fight the crowds. Check out your favorite shore attractions during their winter hours. Lucy the Elephant is open on weekends, the Absecon Lighthouse is open Thursday through Monday, and the Cape May Zoo is open daily during the winter months. The zoo has the added advantage that many of the animals are more active due to cooler temperatures and fewer visitors. Celebrity Entertainment: The stars come out at night at Atlantic City’s casinos and Boardwalk Hall. Mary J. Blige, Jeff Foxworthy, Luke Bryan, and Boys II Men are part of this winter’s lineup. Pair an evening out with a meal at one of those world-class restaurants and you won’t even notice it’s winter. Fun Conventions & Festivals: The Atlantic City Convention Center offers plenty of activity even on cold winter weekends. Check out the Atlantic City Classic Car Show or the Atlantic City RV and Camping Show in February. Drink up at the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival in March or the Winter Beer Garden at Congress Hall in Cape May throughout February and March. Learn about your other favorite beverage at Tropicana’s Winter Wine Festival. There’s plenty to keep you warm and happy throughout the region. The Ultimate Snow Day: It’s winter year-round at Flyers Skate Zone in Atlantic City, the perfect excuse to strap on some skates and give it a whirl. Winter also is a beautiful time on South Jersey’s trails. Bundle up and take a stroll through the Wharton State Forest in Hammonton, the Edwin Forsythe Wildlife Refuge or around Lake Fred at Stockton University. Discover your favorite local trail and don’t forget to take pictures. Of course, New Jersey Lifestyle serves up fun all year round, so grab a cup of hot cocoa — or your beverage of choice — and relax with the latest issue. Happy reading!

Chatter 5 Not-So-Known Valentine’s Day Facts

THE HOLIDAY OF LOVE has some less-than-romantic origins, and actually some very dark roots. Test your knowledge on these not-soknown facts. 1. Historians believe Valentine's Day actually began in Ancient Rome as a pagan fertility festival called Lupercalia, which included sacrificing animals and whipping women with animal skins until they bled, signifying their fertility. 2. The most common founder of Valentine's Day was the Saint Valentine who defied Emperor Claudius II. At the time, Claudius had banned marriage because he thought it distracted young soldiers. Valentine felt differently, and illegally married couples until he was caught. After he was sentenced to death, young couples would visit his cell and give him flowers and cards. He died on February 14. 3. Nearly nine million Americans will buy gifts or cards for their dogs. 4. The most popular gift on Valentine's Day is flowers. Americans send more than 220 million roses each year, and as many as six million couples will get engaged on February 14. 5. The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1868. Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold each year. That's 58 million pounds of chocolate.

A NAME CHANGE IS currently underway in Atlantic City as the former Revel Casino Hotel will soon become Ocean Resort Casino. AC Ocean Walk recently acquired the property for $200 million and will begin work to ready the property immediately, with plans to open in summer 2018. “We are incredibly excited that we were able to take advantage of the opportunity to acquire this tremendous property at a time when Atlantic City is seeing great economic strides,” said Bruce Deifik, Chairman, AC Ocean Walk. “Now the city has a number of exciting new projects with our property and the Hard Rock, as well as Stockton University's new campus and the expansion of the medical center.” The newly-envisioned Ocean Casino Resort will take full advantage of the 6.4 million total square feet of the property, with plans for 138,000 square feet of gaming space — featuring 100 table games and 2,200 slot machines and plans for a sports book. “It is our mission and vision to fully serve the customer base of Atlantic City,” said Deifik. “Our investment in this property will make certain there is something for everyone at the Ocean.” 8

Heart in the Right Place HOW AN AED AND QUICK ACTION SAVED A LOCAL COACH THE MORNING OF NOVEMBER 4, 2017 started out just like any other Saturday during football season. Matt McAnaney, 43, of Cape May Court House got dressed headed out to coach his son, Micah, in a Cape Atlantic Football League game. Little did he know what would happen that day. His team, the Middle Township Panthers, was playing well and leading the Egg Harbor Township Eagles at Egg Harbor Township Veterans Memorial Sports Complex. With three minutes left in the game, McAnaney gave a play to his son, a fifth grader who is the quarterback. Suddenly McAnaney fell to the ground. “The next thing I remember, I was in the ambulance,” he says. McAnaney suffered a heart attack. Fortunately for him, there were people in the stands and across the field who knew just what to do. Dave DeMara, PA-C, the assistant coach for the Eagles, is chief physician assistant at the Heart Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona. DeMara ran to McAnaney and joined two off duty emergency medical technicians, Kristen Davis and Katrina Warren to help the assistant coach. “I told them I am a physician assistant and assist with open heart surgeries at AtlantiCare and that I could tell he’d had a heart attack,” said DeMara. Someone called 911 and they started CPR while waiting for the AED, an automated external defibrillator. When they got the defibrillator, the leads were hooked up and the pads were placed on McAnaney. The machine began analyzing and advised a shock. It was around that time that David Kenny, D.O., ARMC Medical Staff radiologist, arrived to help. He happened to be at another field at the complex. Two more times, the AED analyzed McAnaney and gave the command that a shock was advised. DeMara said they resumed CPR after each shock. While these were trained professionals helping the assistant coach, defibrillators are designed for anyone to use. Each machine includes illustrated instructions as well as step by step audio instructions. The AED walks the user through each step — placing the pads, analyzing and reminding rescuers not to touch the patient if shock is needed. Within 15 seconds after the third shock, the assistant coach was awake and talking. The ambulance arrived and DeMara explained the situation and said he needed an emergency catherization. 20

“It all happened so fast,” said Sarah McAnaney. “The other coaches didn't leave Matt’s side while he lay on the field … after Matt was in the ambulance, the entire complex went to the 50-yard line to pray and have kind thoughts for Matt. It was nice how the two teams came together.” The ambulance took the assistant coach to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus in Pomona where the Cardiac Catheterization and Rhythm Center Heart Institute teams were ready to care for him. Howard Levite, M.D., AtlantiCare Physician Group Cardiology, performed an emergency cardiac catheterization. He stented one of McAnaney’s arteries to open blood flow to the heart. Two days later, after McAnaney was stabilized, Levite stented a second artery. McAnaney was released from the hospital Tuesday, November 7. “Without the AED, and someone dialing 911, our quick, coordinated efforts might not have made a life-saving difference,” noted DeMara. Looking back now, McAnaney recalls, “I felt a little weird during the game. My arms started feeling heavy. I thought it was because I was excited about the game and needed to calm down,” said McAnaney. Before the incident, he was a bit disoriented, “My son said I didn’t call the numbers right, but he knew what I meant. He’s a pretty smart kid.” He never thought the AED would be used on him. He remembers the coaches taking the training to use the AED and thinking to himself “When would we ever need to use this?” Now he knows. After that game, McAnaney says he was planning to go to a lacrosse tournament for his son out of town. “It could have happened while I was driving in the car. It happened so quickly, I would never have been able to pull over.” McAnaney recalls the holiday season, which came only a few weeks after his heart attack. He thought to himself how he might not have been there and how thankful he was to be with his two children and his wife, Sarah, who commented, “The support from our entire community has been truly overwhelming and so much appreciated. I wish I could find the right words to truly show our gratitude.” Before the incident, McAnaney, like many people, said he did not go to the doctor on a regular basis, but when he was screened several years earlier, he did not have high blood pressure or notably high

cholesterol, yet two of his arteries were clogged enough to cause a heart attack. While McAnaney’s job as a carpenter is very physical, it does not get his heart rate up enough to provide cardiovascular conditioning, according to Dr. Vinesh Patel, M.D., FACC, AtlantiCare Physician Group Cardiology, who is McAnaney’s cardiologist. Now, instead of walking by his treadmill at the house, McAnaney actual walks on the treadmill three days a week. He still enjoys a steak every so often, but has added more fish, chicken, and healthy choices to his diet. He is living a healthier life, not just for himself, but for his son, daughter, and wife. After the experience, Sarah McAnaney said the Middle Township Football Association decided they needed an AED at their home field. They applied to the AtlantiCare Heart Heroes Program and began fundraising for the matching funds. She explained, “It would mean so much to Matt and me to be able to help us get one for our football team.” On January 12, 2018 at the player’s annual awards ceremony, that wish came true. AtlantiCare presented an AED to the Middle Junior Panthers Football and Cheer Association, which included assistant coach McAnaney and his son. The donation to the Panthers is the 246th AtlantiCare has made in the communities it serves. Now the Panthers have their own AED that will be available for anyone utilizing the facility. The stars were aligned for Matt McAnaney on that fall day in November. He happened to be playing at a field that had an AED, just installed there in July of last year, only four months before McAnaney’s heart attack. He happened to have professionally-trained medical personnel around him who responded immediately, and he had the heart attack in a public setting, before he got in the car to drive his family to another event. He had many guardian angels that helped save his life that day. Now back to work in his carpentry job, he knows he is a lucky man who has been given a second chance, and does not take that lightly. He is thankful for the AED and the team of people who saved his life. His advice to all of us, “Don’t take any day for granted.” n Robin Stoloff is a former TV Health Reporter for NBC 40 in South Jersey. With the theme, “Be a Superhero for Alzheimer’s,” this fundraising event benefits SGLC’s Alzheimer’s Outreach Services. “We run and walk for many reasons, not the least of which is to make a difference,” said Janice Cambron, executive director, SGLC. “We run to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia, which affects one in nine people over age 65. We run because we can help people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. There is no greater reward than making an impact in someone’s life—and we can do it together.” For more information, visit www.seashoregardens.org/5k/.

If you think you can’t have a workout in a wheelchair, you’ve never been to a session at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC) in Galloway, NJ. The foot tapping, arm waving, stretchy band workouts really get residents moving. It’s more than a fun, social experience, however. It’s an important part of their wellbeing. “The research has shown that physical activity is correlated to our quality of life,” says Martin H. Klein, President and CEO, SGLC. “The benefits are tremendous. Being physically active helps improve your balance and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls. Exercise strengthens your heart and lungs. It also helps reduce feelings of anxiety or depression. It’s why we incorporate physical activity into our care for our residents.” This includes Chair Yoga, Fitness Fun and Music and Movement, as well as themed exercise such as the Bunny Hop workout. The activities staff ensures that all residents are exercising safely based on their age/ability and medical history. SGLC Rehab is Progressive But it’s not only daily fitness that helps keep residents fit and active. The rehabilitation (rehab) program at SGLC helps residents with the full spectrum of issues that affect us as we age or fall ill. The staff assesses the residents through quarterly and annual screenings to see what help is needed. In addition to residents, SGLC rehab is open to anyone in the community who qualifies for its services. The team treats people following hospital stays who need time to build up their strength and abilities before going home and returning to normal activity. Rehab focuses on three areas: physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Physical therapy increases strength, reduces pain, improves balance and endurance and includes safe movement strategies. Occupational therapy instructs on how to use adaptive techniques, skills or equipment to overcome physical limitations and resume routine activities. Speech therapy identifies strategies to help remember both past and upcoming events, and breaks down and organizes information to ease decision making. “We will help residents who have problems swallowing,” said Janice Cambron, executive director. “We’ll help build their cognitive skills, such as with problem solving or noticing cues if they get lost. We also work to help incontinence. The staff takes a person-centered approach with individualized plans to meet specific needs.” The rehab staff works in a fully-outfitted room with occupational therapy equipment. Medical equipment includes electrodes that may be placed in key areas of the body to stimulate muscles. Residents also may work on the ItsNever2Late computer, which helps residents maintain brain function in the areas of memory, attention, language, executive function and visual/spatial acuity. “Our customer satisfaction surveys are always very positive,” adds Cambron. “Our rehab team goes out of their way to help each person reach his or her maximum potential. They are so encouraging, and really work to be creative, to achieve those results.” SGLC participates in Medicare/Medicaid and accepts many supplemental insurances. When Washington Blossoms Plan a trip to the nation’s capital and cheer on the iconic cherry blossoms On a misty Sunday morning, before the buzz begins on the National Mall, unsuspecting observers might think Washington has more monuments than people. That’s especially true during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, a month-long party that is the highlight of the city’s social calendar, not only for residents, but for visitors lured by the annual return of the pink and white flowers. Festivities begin this year on March 15 with the annual Pink Tie Party, a fund-raiser for the festival. The tradition of cheering the cherry blossoms began on March 27, 1912, when First Lady Helen Herron Taft joined the Japanese ambassador’s wife to plant the first of 3,000 trees gifted to the city by the mayor of Tokyo. That planting, on the north bank of the Tidal Basin 24

in West Potomac Park, grew into the nation’s grandest garden event. With the possible exception of Opening Day at Nationals Park, there is no better harbinger of spring. And spring comes early to the District of Columbia, a small, stateless city that is home to less than 700,000 residents. Most Americans know the nation’s capital as the home of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the Capitol dome, but the list of landmarks is longer than the Declaration of Independence. One of them, the White House, has been the home of every president except the first one. George Washington laid the cornerstone of the future Capitol Building in 1793. Its iconic facade is so famous that the National Park

Service placed its visitors center underground to showcase the view. The internal view is almost as good, with the circular Rotunda surrounded by Doric columns and embracing the compass star that marks the only meeting place of the district’s four quadrants. An hour-long guided tour and film are free, though reservations are recommended. That structure has survived burning by the British in 1812, countless upgrades, and destruction in the pilot episode of ABC’s Designated Survivor. It also spent years as the logo of the hapless Washington Senators, a baseball team that was so bad it twice left for other cities. Thanks to its malfeasance, the city was often called “first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League.” That can’t happen again, since the 2005 transformation of the Montreal Expos into the Washington Nationals made the capital a National League city. In addition to Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson, people honored with memorials include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, and the American soldiers who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. There are museums of every size and description, including a dozen Smithsonians that don’t charge admission and a spy museum that does. There’s even a museum — appropriately named the Newseum — dedicated to the history and gathering of news, much of it generated a few blocks away on Capitol Hill. It took a transplanted Frenchman to foresee what for him was a foreign capital. Pierre-Charles L’enfant conceived a design that deliberately separated the legislative and executive branches of government. He made the Capitol the anchor of a mile-long grand avenue (now called The National Mall) and placed it at the spot where the city’s quadrants converge. Looking due west from the capitol steps today, visitors can see the Washington Monument, National World War

II Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. Those who reach the top of the 555-foot monument, by steps or elevator, have a perfect view of the White House to the north, Jefferson Memorial to the south, Lincoln Memorial to the west, and Capitol to the east. On a sunny day, photographers at the Lincoln Memorial can capture the reflection of the Washington Monument in the Reflecting Pool, a rectangular blue staple sandwiched into the green oasis. And visitors with a sense of history can reflect on the legacy of the spot, where women demanded the right to vote, Martin Luther King demanded equal rights for minorities, and throngs thundered against the War in Vietnam. The city’s most popular attraction, the Air & Space Museum, is the best-known of the Smithsonians that stand on both sides of the mall. The collection includes museums of art, crime, American history, natural history, the American Indian, and even the postal service. The collection at Air & Space got so big that an offshoot was added near Dulles Airport. While the former features the planes made famous by the Wright Brothers and Charles Lindbergh, not to mention moon rocks and Star Trek artifacts, the star attraction among the 160 aircraft at the Chantilly, VA showplace is the Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb. Both museums show spectacular IMAX movies and the former also offers a planetarium — a perfect place to rest after perusing the enormous collection. A formidable stone structure called The Castle, which predates the Civil War, might be the best starting point on the mall. The first Smithsonian building, it offers visual histories of both the city and the Smithsonians, which sprouted like dancing mushrooms after a $500,000 grant from British subject James Smithson, who had never njlifestyleonline.com

LIFEST YLE TRAVEL been to America. He was inspired by people like Thomas Jefferson, whose desk resides in the American History Museum, along with Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz and the Woolworth’s lunch counter where the Greensboro Four staged a 1960 civil rights sit-in. The smallest of the Smithsonians may be the most interesting. The National Postal Museum, housed a building that was once Washington’s main post office, includes six ongoing shows that cover everything from the Pony Express to unusual stamps, mobile postal stations, and documents that mark the upcoming 500th anniversary of England’s Royal Mail Service. A sobering reminder of religious intolerance, the nearby U.S. Holocaust Museum documents the American reaction to the Nazi slaughter of Jews during the Second World War. With 900 artifacts and 70 video monitors, it is the only national memorial resulting from a genocide. Visitors are invariably so overcome with emotion that they speak only in hushed tones or whispers while perusing its harrowing halls. The same sensation prevails at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where the names of 58,000 dead or missing soldiers are inscribed in a long, horizontal wall of granite Lincoln Memorial adjacent to the Reflecting Pool. Photo courtesy of A trip to the top of the washington.org. Washington Monument is a good remedy from the memory of both man-made tragedies. Though damaged in the surprise earthquake of 2011, the world’s tallest free-standing masonry edifice has reopened to the public. Hearty souls can try the 897 steps but most prefer the elevator. Also on the can’t-miss list in the colorful capital are the Supreme Court, National Archives, and Library of Congress, home of the Gutenberg Bible and 130 million other books. A hot spot for cool nightlife is the U Street Corridor, where refurbished row houses from Florida Avenue east to 13th Street ooze enjoyable sounds that drown out the discord emanating from the houses of Congress. Politicians of all parties are fair game for The Capitol Steps, a political comedy troupe operating out of its own theater in tony Georgetown. Composed of former Congressional staffers, the company presents songs with familiar melodies but distinctly different lyrics. Plays are still performed in Ford’s Theater, where Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, and in the swanky Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a palatial edifice perched on the banks of the Potomac. Athletes also perform in the capital, which has pro sports teams in baseball (Nationals), football (Redskins), and basketball (Wizards), plus college competitions involving six area schools. The Nationals, one of two major-league teams that never reached the World Series, may fill that void this season. George Washington never threw a silver dollar across the Potomac but did spend much of his life on the Virginia side. His Mount Vernon estate remains a robust tourist magnet. Also located in Virginia are the Pentagon, CIA headquarters, and Arlington National Cemetery, where John, Robert, and Ted Kennedy are buried. The streets of Old Town Alexandria, a short hop by metro, are paved with history. From there, frequent ferries whisk visitors to Mount Vernon, Nationals Park, and 26

Out-of-towners could spend months in town without seeing everything. A city of neighborhoods, Washington looks different on Embassy Row than it does in Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Chinatown, or Georgetown. Hidden treasures are everywhere. The vice president’s house, near the Naval Observatory, is tucked into the northwest corner of the city. The National Zoo is a perfect place for a spring stroll. Yet another option is the home of Woodrow Wilson, the only president who remained in Washington after leaving office. Although the district depends upon tourism, finding rooms during Cherry Blossom Festival won’t be easy. Since the sleek Metro system links downtown D.C. with destinations in Maryland and Virginia, many visitors seek the serenity of the suburbs, not to mention the lower prices. MONEYWATCH

The Year in Review Early Predictions Heading into 2017, many analysts were predicting a modest year for investors. Fresh off the end of 2016 where stocks rallied strong in the fourth quarter to finish up almost 12% (S&P 500) for the year, both Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs were predicting an S&P 500 return for 2018 of less than 3%. Further, many analysts were also predicting a rough ride for the bond market, where it was widely believed that rising interest rates would cause most bond returns to be flat or negative for the year. The S&P 500 posted a total return of 21.31% for 2018, its best year since 2013. And, although the Fed (FOMC committee) raised short-term interest rates three times in 2017, the long end of the interest rate yield curve (as indicated by the 10 Year US Treasury Rate) actually declined slightly during 2018, starting the year at 2.45% and finishing 2018 at 2.40%. The US Bloomberg Barclays Aggregate Bond Index finished 2017 with a respectable 3.54% return. If the last two years have taught us anything, it is that forecasting elections or market returns is a fool’s errand. Low Volatility One thing that was steady throughout 2017 was record low volatility. The S&P 500 did not have a single month of negative returns. In fact, you have to go back to October 2016 for the last negative month, a win streak of 14 consecutive months, the longest in history. Also, the magnitude of daily moves in the market was also much less than normal. Not a single day in 2017 did the market move up or down by 2% or more. Finally, the average largest intra-year decline of the S&P 500 (meaning the largest draw down during the year from a high to a low point) is close to 16%. It was only 2.8% in 2017. All those investors waiting for the big pullback in 2017 found themselves still waiting at year end. Equity Markets As mentioned above, Large Cap US (S&P 500) was up 21.31%, for 2017, Mid Cap US (S&P Midcap 400) was up 16.24%, Small Cap US (Russell 2000) was up 14.65%, Developed International (MSCI EAFE) was up 25.03% and Emerging Markets (MSCI Emerging Mkt) was up 37.28%. Any year where all equity indices are up double digits is a great year for investors.

Value vs Growth and Sectors Unlike 2016 where value stocks did better than growth stocks, 2017 was clearly a year for growth stocks with the S&P 500 Growth index up 27.44% while the S&P 500 Value index (mainly your dividend payers) was up 15.36%. The top performing sectors, not surprisingly were the growth sectors, with Technology leading the way up 39%, Consumer Discretionary was up 23%, Materials were up 23%, Financials were up 22%, Healthcare was up 22% and Industrials were up 22%. The sectors that lagged the benchmark for 2017 were Consumer Staples up 13%, Utilities up 12%, Real Estate up 10%, and the only two negative sectors for the year were Energy and Telecom which were both negative at -1%. Outlook Going into 2018, we are cautiously optimistic. While we see the possibility of another 20% return from the stock market in 2018 as unlikely, most of the economic indicators are still positive: low unemployment, low interest rates, low inflation and once again, as in 2017, it is widely expected that most of the world’s economies will be expanding in 2018. This, coupled with the potential positive economic gains in the U.S. from the recent tax reform, bodes well for another positive market in 2018. We would expect there to be more volatility in 2018. As always, there are some geo-political potential headwinds, mainly in North Korea and Iran, which could upset things in 2018, but barring either one of those situations escalating or something unforeseen as of this writing, the table is set for what could be another decent year in 2018. n

MONEY MATTERS By Terri L. Marakos, CPA

To Pre-pay or Not to Pre-pay? THAT WAS THE QUESTION THAT WAS THE TOPIC of many discussions relating to taxes at the end of 2017. However, it only scratches the surface of the issues resulting from the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Most, if not all, taxpayers will be affected by the sweeping reforms. Listed below are selected federal act provisions and selected state tax provisions that may impact you for 2017 and beyond. In light of these changes, we recommend that you begin tax planning as soon as possible. Please join us for a practical, easy to understand one-hour informational session on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 5:30. Call Capaldi Reynolds & Pelosi at (609) 641-4000 by February 12, 2018 for reservations. New For 2017 • Medical expenses are deductible as an itemized deduction so long as they are greater than 7.5% of adjusted gross income. • Additional standard deductions are available for certain net disaster losses (also for 2016). • For businesses, some key depreciation provisions were implemented. • For NJ resident/non-resident Gross Income Tax Returns, military veterans honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States by the last day of the tax year are eligible for a $3,000 exemption. New For 2018 • The TCJA has specified seven tax rates for individuals: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% & 37%. • The “kiddie tax” is no longer based upon the “allocable parental tax,” but is determined by applying the ordinary and

capital gains rates applicable to trusts and estates to the unearned income of a child. • The standard deduction increases to $12,000 for single taxpayers and $24,000 for married individuals filing a joint return. • There is no longer a deduction for personal exemptions. • The moving expense deduction is repealed for tax years 2018-2025, with the exception of special rules applicable to members of the Armed Forces. • Owners of partnerships, S corporations, sole proprietorships, and rental activities may be allowed a deduction in an amount equal to 20% of qualified pass-through business income, subject to a number of limitations and qualifications. • The itemized deduction for mortgage interest is limited to interest on up to $750,000 of acquisition indebtedness for mortgages entered into after December 31, 2017. • Taxpayers will no longer be able to deduct interest on home equity indebtedness. • State and local income tax and property taxes will be limited to $10,000 as an itemized deduction. • The TCJA removes miscellaneous itemized deductions subject to the 2% of adjusted gross income floor, so no longer can taxpayers deduct such things as union dues, investment advisory fees and unreimbursed employee business expenses. • The child tax credit increases to $2,000 per qualifying child, with a substantial increase in the income limit to be able to claim the credit. • Beginning with gifts or deaths on or after January 1, 2018, the Act doubles the exemption amount for gift, estate or generation-skipping transfer taxes to approximately $11.2 million per person, adjusted annually for inflation. Lifelines BY MICHELLE DAWN MOONEY

What Are You Waiting For? Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today. That familiar phrase is a great motivator, but it's often easier said than done. Sometimes it's hard to take care of those dreaded tasks we know we SHOULD do, when we have zero desire to do them. Granted, few people jump at the chance to clear out their inbox or delve deep into their tax returns, but what about the things you actually WANT to do? What about those things you said you'd always like to get around to doing someday, only that day has yet to come? The start of a new year is always a great time to wipe the slate clean and get moving on all the schemes and dreams that have been swirling around in our heads, yet here we are staring down February with many of those aspirations still sitting on the back burner. Why do so many of us put off chasing our dreams? What are we so afraid of? I recently came across a quote from Nelson Mandela that was somewhat of a game changer for me — "I never lose. I either win or I learn." Wow. Think of how your view changes when so-called "failure" isn't really an option. Even the most ambitious people know that sometimes the ideas we are most passionate about don't come to fruition as quickly as we

would like, if even at all, but that doesn't mean we've failed. It's hard not to be discouraged when the outcome isn't what we had hoped for, especially if the results are unfavorable, but even worse...never putting the plan into motion in the first place. Some of the biggest inventions in the world have only come about after exhaustive trial and error. Still, many of us are scared to break out of our comfort zone and spread our wings because we're afraid of falling. While it is true that you can't fail if you never try, you also can't win unless you play the game, and it's never too late to learn. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was a 31 year-old single mother trying to make ends meet when her story of a boy wizard was finally published, more than 5 years after it was written and after a dozen other publishers turned it down; former figure skater and fashion editor Vera Wang was 40 when she designed her first bridal gown, which started her on a path to a $600 million empire; Marvel creator Stan Lee was just shy of his 39th birthday when he first found fame with his comic book The Fantastic Four; and Donald Fisher, with no prior retail experience, was 40 years old when he and his wife opened their first Gap store in San Francisco, a

venture that led to his net worth of $3 billion. Granted, most of us are probably not willing, or able to plunge into a bigtime business venture, but what about smalltime? Take the first step. If you can't quite take that step, at least tie up those laces and get ready for when you can. Whether it's entertaining a career move, working on that "next big" invention, deciding to go back to school, or simply taking up a hobby you've always dreamed about mastering — what are you waiting for? Life is short. There are far more reasons why you should at least start the race, rather than stand on the sidelines watching everyone else run past, doing the things YOU have always dreamed about. As iconic sprinter Usain Bolt put it, "Don't think about the start of the race, think about the ending." n Michelle Dawn Mooney is a nationally recognized author, as well as a tv and radio personality. Case Solved!

By Harry Hurley Op-Ed Contributor

NEW ATLANTIC COUNTY PROSECUTOR SOLVES APRIL KAUFFMAN MURDER CASE

IT TOOK NEARLY SIX YEARS. THE CASE HAD BECOME FREEZING COLD. MANY HAD LOST FAITH THAT THE MURDER OF APRIL KAUFFMAN WOULD EVER BE SOLVED. I have maintained that when former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie named Damon Tyner as the new Atlantic County Prosecutor, he would solve the case. It took Tyner and his various legal controlling authorities at the local, county, state, and national level 10 months to solve the case. For inexplicable reasons, the former Prosecutor James McClain (who is now a New Jersey Superior Court Judge) was a major impediment towards making any measurable progress regarding this ice cold case. McClain is a friend and former patient of Dr. James Kauffman, April's former husband. McClain never recused himself. For reasons only known to him, McClain did not believe he had an inherent conflict of interest to oversee the prosecution of this murder case. When the time is right, McClain must answer some serious and pointed questions. Did he ever consider James Kauffman to be a target, subject or person of interest in the murder of April Kauffman? Did McClain's friendship and patient status with Kauffman cloud his judgment? Did he simply not want to accept that James Kauffman could have been involved? That time is not now. After no movement in this case for more than five years, Tyner has presented serious charges against multiple defendants. Although there has been a flurry of activity and buzz; there will be no race to the trial. The process and run-up may take more than one year. In a major break in the case — that I exclusively revealed on January 9, 2018 — James Kauffman and seven others were arrested in connection to the murder of April Kauffman, along with conspiracy and racketeering charges. James Kauffman has been charged with: 1st degree Racketeering, 1st degree Leader and Murder. Ferdinand Augello has been charged with: 1st degree Leader, 1st degree Murder (April Kauffman), conspiracy to commit the murder of James

Kauffman and 1st degree Racketeering. The charges against James Kauffman and Augello are also related to the illegal distribution of narcotics through Kauffman's former medical practice. April Kauffman was murdered on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at approximately 11:30 AM at her residence in Linwood, NJ. James Kauffman had reported to the Linwood Police Department that he found his wife deceased. April Kauffman was pronounced dead at 11:45 AM in the second floor master bedroom of multiple gunshot wounds. Like the elements of a made-for-television movie, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office determined that a long time alliance between James Kauffman and the Pagan Outlaw Motorcycle Gang had been established. Tyner alleges that Kauffman and the Pagans created an illegal drug distribution enterprise for profit through Kauffman's former medical practice. Tyner further alleges that the plot to kill April Kauffman was hatched beginning in August, 2011. The motive appears to be centered around April Kauffman wanting to divorce James Kauffman. Tyner alleges that James Kauffman “would rather kill April Kauffman than grant the divorce and lose half his empire.” James Kauffman objected to a divorce settlement and Tyner has concluded that April Kauffman had threatened to “spend as much money as possible until a divorce was granted, and expose the fraudulent practices taking place at Kauffman's medical office,” which allegedly was an illegal Oxy distribution network that James Kauffman had allegedly established. Tyner has also confirmed the man responsible for murdering April Kaufman died on October 8, 2013 of a heroin drug overdose. Francis Mullholland was found dead at his home in Lower Township. You cannot overstate the importance of Tyner becoming the Atlantic County Prosecutor. Upon his appointment, everything changed for the better. While Tyner has deservedly been the face of the renewed

interest in this investigation, Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Sgt. James Scoppa, Jr. and FBI Special Agent Daniel A. Garrabrant are the lead investigators. Both have done an incredible job in picking up the cold case following McClain's indefensible inaction. An impeccable, highranking law enforcement source has confirmed to me that McClain would not even allow his staff to investigate the Kauffman murder on their own time. That's highly suspect and disgusting to ponder. A well-placed source of mine especially credits Special Agent Garrabrant for keeping this investigation alive, while the County Prosecutor's Office had refused to properly investigate. Year-after-year, vigils for April Kauffman were held. I typically spoke at these events and served as master of ceremonies. I vividly remember saying (with each passing year) that I hope we will not be gathered back together one year from now and witness this case growing even colder. April Kauffman's daughter Kimberly Pack has conducted herself in such a commendable fashion throughout. It is almost impossible for anyone to imagine the pain she has been forced to endure. The life of her mother and her children's grandmother was brutally taken and then be forced to sit back and watch the case grow colder and colder for more than five years. It had to be almost too much to bear. Pack handled this life shattering, heartbreaking situation with true grace and elegance. She has handled the news of the cold case finally being solved with even more grace and elegance. Pack is actually diligently working on “forgiveness.” This is a level of civility and decency you rarely see anymore in society. n Harry Hurley is the president of Harry Hurley Consulting and Communications, LLC. The Compact SUV with a Heart INTRODUCING THE ALL-NEW 2018 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN THE ALL-NEW 2018 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN builds on its 2017 fun-todrive character with a redesign specifically engineered to meet the needs of American customers, with a more sophisticated and spacious interior, flexible seating, and high-tech infotainment and available driverassistance features. As with the all-new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas full-size SUV, the new Tiguan is based on Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture. At 181.5 inches long, the new Tiguan has more interior space and up to 58% more cargo space in the two-row model. Tiguan’s expanded dimensions give it one of the longest footprints in the segment, although it still remains nimble enough to excel in urban driving. The Tiguan’s exterior marks an evolution in Volkswagen’s clean and timeless design DNA, with modern lines and a refined appearance. The MQB platform allows for a wider, lower stance; the combination of this with sharper character lines and the vehicle’s LED lighting has already garnered several European design awards.

The compact Tiguan SUV is available in S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trim levels. With a starting price of $24,595, the S trim is distinguished by halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, fog lights with cornering function, heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, and 17-inch “Montana” wheels. The SE trim starts at $26,750, and wears 17-inch “Tulsa” wheels and features, and a chrome exterior package. The Tiguan SEL starts at $31,090 and includes 18-inch “Nizza” wheels, a power liftgate, and silver roof rails. Starting at $36,250, the top-of-the-line SEL Premium trim is shod with 19-inch “Victoria Falls” wheels, LED headlights with the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding exterior mirrors with puddle lights. The SEL Premium also features a hands-free Easy Open power liftgate, which is foot-activated on opening to make Tiguan’s cargo space more accessible when customers’ hands are full. The liftgate also includes an Easy Close feature. Two buttons give owners the option to close the liftgate with the touch of a button — one

to close it immediately and one to automatically close once you step away from the vehicle. An R-Line® package will be available later in the model year for the SEL and SEL Premium, and includes R- Line-specific aluminum-alloy wheels — 19-inch “Trenton” wheels for the SEL and 20-inch “Braselton” wheels for the SEL Premium. Further design elements specific to the R-Line are a revised high-gloss front bumper with large air inlets, a unique rear bumper, wheelarch extensions, and R-Line side skirts and exterior badging. The exterior design of Tiguan also emphasizes its rugged utility. Roof rails are standard, allowing outdoors enthusiasts to upgrade the vehicle with Volkswagen accessories such as bike, kayak, and ski carriers. The new Tiguan has a lower lift-in height for the tailgate, making it easier to load, no matter what cargo you’re carrying. The available towing hitch can be used to pull up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. The Tiguan’s entire interior has been rethought and refreshed, but the versatility of its seating is what sets it apart from the competition. In frontwheel-drive Tiguan models, three rows of seating are standard, including a second-row bench that can recline, slide seven inches fore and aft, fold down, and be split 40/20/40. The 50/50 split third-row provides seating for two, and also folds down. When configured with Volkswagen’s 4Motion allwheel-drive technology, the 2018 Tiguan comes standard with two rows and a third row is optional. Rear view of the 2018 Tiguan R-Line cargo space, and that can be easily expanded to a maximum of 65.7 cubic feet. In two-row models, the new Tiguan supplies a generous 37.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 73.5 cubic feet in all. The 40/20/40 split seats allow the two-row Tiguan to accommodate skis, fishing gear, or other large items. To let the outside into the Tiguan cabin, there’s an available panoramic glass tilt-and-slide sunroof. The interior also features modern, high-quality design with a sporty, driver-focused layout, using gloss-grey and chrome details. Standard features now include a multi-function steering wheel and cloth seats with a rhombus pattern that offers a premium look. Tiguan SE and SEL models feature heated leatherette seating surfaces along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel; the SEL Premium brings leather seating surfaces for rows one and two and a heated steering wheel. Between the large speedometer and tachometer is a multi-function trip computer that helps monitor everything from fuel consumption to trip distance, Bluetooth® connection status and navigation directions (when equipped). The available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display, first seen on the 2018 Atlas, offers drivers a reconfigurable display of key data and the ability to position navigation data front and center for easy viewing. As standard equipment across the Tiguan line, the MIB II infotainment system not only creates the foundation for the next generation of Volkswagen’s Car-Net® connected vehicle services platform, but also offers one of the most comprehensive suites of connected vehicle services and features available in the automotive industry today. The new Tiguan SEL Premium also has the latest Fender Premium Audio System as standard equipment. Updated for the new-generation models, this is the most powerful Fender sound system ever offered in Tiguan. 36

Volkswagen is committed to driving the development of more connected and intelligent vehicles, and the Car-Net® connectivity system is a major element in achieving that goal. Features available through Car-Net are divided into three key areas: “App-Connect,” “Security & Service,” and “Guide & Inform.” Tiguan can be equipped with the 4Motion with Active Control allwheel-drive system. All Tiguan models with 4Motion all-wheel drive feature Active Control, which allows the driver to select specific vehicle profiles based on driving conditions. It has four settings: On-road, Snow, Off-road, and Custom Off-road. Mounted in a lightweight, one-piece strengthened steel subframe, the Tiguan’s strut-type front suspension has lower control arms and long-travel coil springs. The Tiguan is the only vehicle in its class to offer the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which is standard on all models. This system builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact — the most significant of which can cause additional collisions. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System addresses this by applying the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage. The Tiguan offers a standard rearview camera and number of available driver-assistance systems, including Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), front and rear Park Distance Control with Maneuver Braking (ParkPilot), High Beam Control (Light Assist) and Overhead View Camera (Area View). If handsome looks, a spacious cabin, available third-row seating, and a quiet and plush ride are what you’re in store for, then the new Tiguan may be just what you’re looking for in 2018. n

Lifestyle Entertainment The Pointer Sisters

Surviving the Excitement REMINISCING WITH THE POINTER SISTERS

Owing to the enormous success and popularity she and her sisters enjoyed as recording artists during the 1970s and ‘80s, it’s impossible for Ruth Pointer to remember every Atlantic City gig the Pointer Sisters have played over the past four decades. But there’s one engagement from 1984 that Pointer will never forget. That’s because she remembers working a show, going to sleep at a Boardwalk casino and waking up in a hospital in Chicago. At the time, Pointer, now 71, was abusing 38

drugs and alcohol. And now it was time for her to pay the piper. “It never occurred to me that I was abusing my physical body, weakening my body, destroying my body. All I wanted to do was have fun,” the oldest member of the Pointer Sisters says, both over the phone from her home in suburban Boston and in her 2016 autobiography, Still So Excited! My Life As A Pointer Sister. “You know, you’re in your late 20s, early 30s, and you just think you’re gonna live

forever and you can just fix it all later. Well baby, later comes real quick, and your body will let you know. It says ‘no more.’” Pointer remembers she and her sisters June and Anita did something they’d rarely done during 15 years of relentless touring: they cancelled a show. “Back then, we’d have had to be near death to cancel, but I was very sick,” she remembers. She had contracted viral meningitis, but she has no memory of being transported from Atlantic City to a hospital in Chicago. She was,

By David J. Spatz indeed, near death. “I almost left the planet (died). That was a very hard time. I’m just glad that I was able to survive and just be here and look back on that time,” she says. “Sometimes, people say they wouldn’t change anything (about their life). Well, I sure would. The Pointer Sisters started out as a duo in 1969 when June and Bonnie Pointer began performing in small clubs under the name Pointers, a Pair. They became a trio when Anita joined and for a short time were a quartet after oldest sister Ruth added her voice to the mix. Bonnie Pointer decided to explore a solo career in the 1970s, right around the time her other three sisters were beginning to make some noise on the music charts and their live shows with their infectious and danceable songs that blended rhythm-and-blues with Top 40 pop to create a unique sound. When she and her sisters began singing professionally, they never had a game plan for moving forward if one or more of the women decided to veer off in a different direction. “It wasn’t something that we planned, it’s just the way our family has evolved and the way we’ve all just sort of moved along through the family and ended up on that stage together,” she says. Right around the time Ruth Pointer became ill during the Atlantic City gig, the Pointers were at the peak of their popularity. Between 1978 and 1985, they were a veritable hitmaking machine. They cranked out 13 Top 20 hits between 1978 and 1985, including “Fire,” “He’s So Shy,” “Slow Hand,” “I’m So Excited,

Ruth Pointer

“Automatic” and “Jump For My Love.” But the Pointer Sisters also refused to be pigeon-holed or musically stereotyped. “We could sing everything,” Ruth says with a big laugh prior to the ensemble’s New Year’s Eve show at Resorts Casino Hotel. Early on, they even tried a little country music, and before the masses had even heard of the Pointer Sisters, they won a Grammy Award for their country singer “Fairytale,” written by sisters Anita and Bonnie. “It was a surprise to us,” Ruth laughs. “They called us and told us (we’d) won a Grammy,” Ruth remembers. They knew they’d been nominated, obviously, but they also figured they had no chance of winning. So instead of attending the Grammy Awards that year, they decided they could be more productive by being on the road performing shows and earning money. Meanwhile, a good lawyer could probably make a case against the Pointer Sisters for false advertising these days. That’s because after nearly 50 years, the trio of singing siblings really aren’t sisters at all. But they are family, blood relatives representing three generations of the same musical genes. Ruth Pointer is the last of the original sisters still working with the group. She’s joined on stage by her 39-year-old daughter, Issa (pronounced EE-sa) and her 33-yearold granddaughter, Sadako, whose mother is Ruth’s oldest daughter Faun. Ruth remembers the first couple of gigs when Issa performed with her, not long after original Pointer Sister June died in 2006.

“She was scared, terrified,” Pointer says. “The first time she worked with us, we were doing a TV show. The next time was an event every year in Antwert, Belgium called Night of the Proms, where you’re performing in front of 35,000 people every night.” But adding two more generations to the act only makes it more exciting for Ruth to walk on stage. When she sees her daughter and granddaughter singing 40-year-old songs that once hit the top of the charts, she can’t help but be invigorated. “I’ve been having so much fun with them because they bring an element of youth that I left in days gone by,” she says with a big laugh. “Sometimes, I can just relax on stage and turn to both of them and tell them to turn it loose and they do, because they all have that Pointer blood running through their veins.” In addition to the music of the Pointer Sisters, the next significant contribution the group has made could very well be Ruth Pointer’s no-holds-barred, lay-it-all-on-the table book. She didn’t gloss over the painful moments of her life. She hoped her honest talk about her near-deadly encounters with drugs and alcohol might help some people struggling with addiction. “I tried not to (hold back). It was just my interpretation of my experience being in the business and just the way that my life took such twists and turns,” she says. “I was getting into things that were enjoyable, things that were dangerous, things I didn’t know I was going to get involved in and how I survived it all. It makes me grateful every single day when I wake up in the morning.” n

RESTAURANT REPORT By Alyson Boxman Levine

Next Level Dining NERO’S ITALIAN STEAKHOUSE HAS SURVIVED, AND THRIVED, FOR OVER THREE DECADES WITH THEIR INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND QUALITY CUISINE WHEN A RESTAURANT ACHIEVES OVER THREE DECADES OF success, it is certainly time to celebrate, especially in the competitive casino industry. Each year in Atlantic City, many dining establishments close their doors or change their name in hopes of reinventing themselves into a more successful version. Well, Nero’s Italian Steakhouse has been housed in the same location at Caesars Atlantic City since 1994 and has survived, and thrived, through 42

all the ups and downs the area has experienced over the last few decades. What’s its secret? For starters, there are the amazing staff, their homemade savory cuisine, and, of course, that magnificent ocean view visitors simply adore. Upon entering the establishment, the breathtaking seascape overtakes you. With sweeping direct views of the Atlantic Ocean, you will feel as though you are at sea cruising on

a private yacht. And once you are seated, your thoughts drift from the sea to the well-appointed menu and Nero’s plethora of mouth-watering offerings. Serving prime meats, including their 28-oz. Nero’s Signature Prime Rib and other traditional steakhouse classics like Steakhouse Wedge salad with gorgonzola dressing and fresh fish — including Chilean Sea Bass and Branzino — what makes Nero’s rise head and shoulders above other area steakhouses are the authentic Italian offerings expertly crafted by Chef Maurizio DiMarco. House-made pastas are prepared daily, with menu selections including a delicious Linguine with Seafood and the local’s favorite, Rigatoni with a Rustic Bolognese. Chef DiMarco also creates a special item for Valentine’s Day, a Heart-shaped Seafood Ravioli to share. Chef DiMarco got started in the culinary field at age 13 working at numerous resorts throughout Italy before coming to the U.S. A graduate of the Italian Culinary Institute, his career in the restaurant industry encompasses more than 22 years of professional culinary experience attained from some of the world’s most well-known hotels and restaurants both in the U.S. and abroad. His kitchen is committed to promoting organic agriculture and supporting local growers and artisanal food producers whenever possible. With the expert team of General Manager Betty McHugh and Chef DiMarco running the front and the back of the house, respectively, the restaurant’s strong focus on customer service is at the forefront. The team’s newest brainchild is Betty’s Back Room, lovingly named after McHugh, who has been with Caesars since the early days, and whose experience — coupled with her warm and charming hospitality — is the ideal representative of this hidden gem. Housed privately in a separate room, Betty’s Back Room is open on Saturday evenings and specializes in a unique dining experience. This is not simply a place to dine and depart; this a place to spend the evening with music, friends, and exceptional food and libations. Upon entering, you will experience a transformation back to the heyday of Atlantic City, when decadence reigned and fun abounded. A white grand piano centers the room and music continues throughout the evening as guests have a drink and dance between courses. Betty’s Back Room offers its own unique menu created by Chef DiMarco and guests are treated to elegant tableside service. The offerings at Betty’s Back Room include Controfiletto Curato, a 24-oz. Dry Age Center Cut Sirloin Steak paired with mushrooms and steak fries for the ultimate steak feast and Sogliola alla Mugnaia, Dover Sole served with Jumbo Lump Crab, wilted spinach, and white wine truffle sauce. Nero’s also serves the most decadent Sunday brunch in Atlantic City and across the entire east coast, with specialties such as filet of beef, grilled swordfish, freshly-carved turkey, and handmade lasagna. Dive into the succulent seafood favorites, including shrimp, crab claws, oysters, and freshly-prepared sushi. Stop by the omelet station and have stylish, fedora-wearing Matt prepare you a delicious creation. Design your own Bloody Mary at the bottomless Bloody Mary bar or, if a more healthy option is on your mind, the juice bar will blend any creation you desire. One thing you will certainly notice when you’re dining at Nero’s in the evening, at their famous brunch, or inside Betty’s Back Room, is that everyone is having a great time. From the jovial guests to the smiling staff, the enjoyment can be felt from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave; it’s something you simply must experience to believe. “We credit much of the success to the staff at Caesars,” explained McHugh. “Many of the staff has been here since the restaurant opened and work together seamlessly. From the kitchen staff to the severs, there is a unique feeling of comradery not often found in many restaurants.” And things are continuing on the upswing for this beloved establishment. “2017 was our most successful year so far,” revealed McHugh, and with all the buzz around Betty’s Back Room, it looks like 2018 is going to be record-breaking as well. Lifestyle Cooking With Chef Will Savarese

Winter’s Chill Hearty food enjoyed with friends makes it all taste better

W inter is surely here. It came in with a serious cold spell and, to top it off, we got a wallop of a snowstorm with high winds. From what I’m hearing, we are going to be in for a couple more storms before it’s all said and done. Did someone say bring on the spring and summer? The only white I want to see is the white sand between my toes. In the meantime, we just have to suck it up and get through this. My wife, Patti, and I will be having our annual get-together with friends. Mom will be attending this year; she’s been with us more since dad’s passing almost one year ago. Our get-together always have a nice turn out: good food (how can it not be), wine, and our homemade punch with a kick. It’ll be good for mom to see a number of people that she hasn’t seen in a while. Besides that, it’ll give me the chance to cook for a group of people and make their taste buds happy. I’ll also be looking to do some kind of get-together for the Super Bowl. I may come up with a theme and make food from the regions of the teams playing in the big game. Remember to share, always spend time with friends, and enjoy each other’s company. We are not granted tomorrow, so why not enjoy today and live out our life to the fullest?

With all these cold months still in front of us, what’s better than a hearty bowl of soup? A big concept in my cooking is to season as you go. This is also seen in what I call “building the layer of flavors” as you go. With soup, if I start off with garlic and onions, I still like to season a bit. Then, as I add other vegetables to the soup, I lightly season again. Lightly seasoning is the key. I know other people believe in seasoning at the end, but I taste as I go and then am able to determine in what direction I want to take the dish. Again, I feel very strongly about building the flavors in layers. The bottom line: What’s better then cooking and baking in the cold of winter, staying at home, and having a terrific home-cooked meal with the ones you love? You can even make a themed-meal, as I mentioned earlier. One suggestion is an artichoke heart soup or perhaps a dish, such as rack of lamb, classically-prepared herb bread crumbs, and Dijon mustard crust. Nothing too extravagant, since you’ll want to enjoy your time together; have some nice wine, and some chocolate for dessert, that would make anyone happy. Oh, and enjoy the fine wine, life is too short not to drink the good stuff! n

Recipe Corner Simply Divine Artichoke Soup Ingredients:

• 4 fresh large artichokes • Handful of garlic • 2 carrots • 3 ribs of celery • 2 large onions • Bunch of fresh thyme

• Bunch of Italian parsley • 32-ounces of vegetable or chicken stock • 8-ounces of cream • 2 lemons • White Riesling wine to deglaze • Baby spinach

Instructions: Trim up artichokes, save all the peels. Place artichokes in cold water with a splash of wine vinegar. Sauté one onion with garlic cloves. Add diced carrot and rib of celery with a few pieces of thyme and parsley stems. Then add all the trim of the artichokes (leaves). Sweat out good, season with salt and pepper. Then deglaze with the Riesling and add stock to cover. Bring to boil and then simmer; reduce and taste as you go. Then add cream, bring back to a boil, and simmer. Strain and reserve liquid. While still hot, add a couple of handfuls of baby spinach and diced artichokes. Squeeze a lemon or two. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Enjoy! Winter Wine Tour Travel the world one bottle at a time

By Phillip Silverstone

P

lease send positive thoughts my way, as I am writing the column just one week before I have spinal fusion surgery. And, I dedicate this column to my greatest hero, my wife Linda, who will be by my side sampling wines with me while I’m feeling sorry for myself. I remember once saying “In sickness and in health” and the same can be said for wine. As long as my medications will permit me to drink the nectar I adore with the woman I adore, perhaps the recovery period will be less painful and more of an adventure. We shall see. Anyway, it’s winter so you know most of my wines will be red, but, some whites bring thoughts of summer, so we have to include a few of those in this column’s selection. And let’s start out with everyone’s favorite wine country: Italy. Caroso Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva, Abruzzo, Italy (This red wine is approx. $21.99.) Abruzzo is in the south eastern part of Italy, just above “the boot.” The Citra family of stylishlycreated Italian wines came into being in 1973 when 3,000 small growers scattered throughout the Abruzzo region opted to band together to form a single wine cooperative. What they all shared in common was a commitment to win the national and international recognition they felt the wines of their region deserved. This red wine is aged in a combination of Slavonian oak barrels and French oak barriques for 24 months, with additional aging in bottles for minimum six months before release. Caroso’s Montepilciano has a beautiful deep ruby color with complex aromas of dark fruit and warm spice, accented by hints of sweet vanilla. Rich, generous, full-bodied and velvety, with loads of deep red fruit, plum and cinnamon; the winery insists that we try it with kebabs! Feudo Principi di Butera Insolia, Sicily, Italy (This white wine is approx. $14.99.) This expansive estate is located on land once owned by the Prince of Butera, 46

situated in the southeastern part of the Province of Caltanissetta, making it apart of the DOC district of Riesi, Sicily. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for 7-10 and remains on their lees (parts of the original grape that remains after the initial winemaking process) for three months. They then age in stainless tanks for six months, followed by an additional three months in the bottle. The wine has a clear and brilliant golden straw yellow with faint green hues. The perfume is full of delicate minerals with fresh apples, tangerine, cream and exotic flowers. The flavor is dry, medium bodied and refreshing, with notes of citrus and tangerine, sweet almond and stone minerals that lead to a long and crisp finish. And we all need something bright and cheerful and bubbly in the winter, but sadly Vanna White is busy, so as a neat substitute I suggest some Prosecco: Castello del Poggio Prosecco, Asti, Italy (This sparkling wine is approx. $12.99.) Castello del Poggio's name honors the original castle built in the village of Poggio. The estate is situated entirely in the town of Monferrato and it lies within the Province of Asti, one of Piedmont's finest wine regions. And since we’re on the subject of Vanna White (why did she just come into my head … now my head is spinning) this semi-dry sparkling Prosecco hits you right in the swxet txoth (buy a letter or two to finish that sentence). The color is a bright straw yellow with very tiny bubbles. The perfume is intense and fruity with golden apple notes. The flavor is very fresh, fruity and has strong minerality. And now we move around the map a little and come to a region that tends to be overlooked and definitely misunderstood and — in the words of many wine buyers who say: “It’s all Greek to me” — they got that one right! So it's high time to bring some of Greece's finest grape varieties and cheeses together

for the ultimate Greek wine and cheese pairing. Hopefully you will start seeking out wine stores and cheese departments to find these treasures. Moschofilero (This white grape produces wines approx. $14.) This is a deep pinkskinned grape variety, producing an intensely aromatic and golden-hued wine. The wines are usually floral, with crisp acidity and powerful flavors to match the aroma. You can expect hints of white flowers, honeysuckle, violets and rose petals. Pair with: Manouri, a whey cheese that is exclusively produced in central and western Macedonia and in Thessalia. Made from pure sheep's or goat's milk, Manouri is a rich, soft, spreadable cheese with a texture similar to French Chévre, but with a uniquely Greek tang. Agiorgitiko (This red grape produces wines approx. $16.) This grape produces wines with a deep ruby color, full of vitality and character. An Agiorgitiko wine generally has a rich bouquet of wild flowers and fruits, such as plums and cherries. Pair with: Graviera, a hard yet mild cheese made on the Greek island of Crete. Made from sheep's milk or blend of sheep's and goat's milk, and aged for a minimum of five months, this cheese has a sweet nutty flavor. Excellent for shredding over pasta and for general cooking use. Assyrtiko (This white grape produces wines approx. $22.) The wines made from this grape are usually light in color, with a soft golden hue. The wine is well structured and balanced with notes of fruit like pears, green apples, and citrus. The result is a dry and full-bodied wine with intense minerality, a fair amount of acidity and an elegant finish. Pair with: Kasseri, a semi-hard cheese made from a blend of sheep's and goat's milk. It's a pale yellow cheese with mild tangy flavor and springy texture. Kasseri is slightly salty and a bit oily in texture,

RESTAURANT WEEK commonly referred to as the Greek Mozzarella. Kasseri is a versatile cheese and is great in sandwiches, on pizza and on pasta. And now we are globetrotting to South Africa: Aslina Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch, South Africa (This white wine is approx. $20.) Growing up in the rolling hills of Zululand, Ntsiki Biyela embarked on a life changing journey to the Cape Winelands. It was here that she discovered her talent and passion to create amazing wines. And she turned her dreams into reality and dedicated her brand’s name to her great inspiration, her beloved grandmother, Aslina. This story is so romantic that every sip encapsulates the passion, elegance, and vision with which it was crafted. This is a complex Sauvignon Blanc with bright fruit, lots of citrus characters, lemon zest, beautiful complexity, and depth. And extended time on the lees gives this wine a unique, lingering, silky finish. Thank you Ms. Biyela for this complex Sauvignon.

HAPPY HOUR Drink Specials & Half-Price Glasses of Wine, Appetizers, Sandwiches & Salads

And finally, another version of the most overlooked grape ever made and often being left on shelves to collect dust, except when I am in the store. Lubanzi Chenin Blanc, Swartland, South Africa (This white wine is approx. $18.) This Chenin is precisely what I refer to as “Summer sunshine in a glass” and was the wine which I alluded right back at the beginning of this column. A wine which will drift you through the calendar to a lazy, hazy day outdoors. Only 100 cases were made and all of the grapes were hand picked. The wine has a lively green color, with hues of pale straw which are the first indication this is going to be both fresh and complex. The perfume is true summer fruits: Fresh figs, and nectarines and the taste is full of citrus fruit and melon. The finish is creamy and long and fresh like watermelon sorbet. YUMMY! I have convinced myself that as the sleepy cocktail slides down the IV tube into my veins, my fading, sleep induced, drugged up voice will be attempting to shout: “My cork, my cork, my kingdom for a cor … zzzzzzzzz. Cheers! n

PHILL’S WINTER BEST OF THE BUNCH CHOICE Thokosani SMV, South Africa (This red wine is approx. $20.) The wine is made from a blend of 86% Shiraz; 13% Mourvedre; and 1% Viognier and it is aged six months in wood. And what an amazing red winter this is and, for the price, it has no peer! This is a big wine with a complex bouquet of dark chocolate, dark cherries, liquorice, smoky bacon and butterscotch, with the flavor that has a smokiness along with a savory mix of fruit and mocha, with silky tannins to finish. njlifestyleonline.com
