Summer Is Here!
There’s no better time for basking in the glow of a summer sunrise while relishing the sounds of nature upon an early awakening. And when it comes to spectacular sunrises, look no further than the author of our cover photo, Kristian Gonyea. Kristian has many more beautiful prints available to order at facebook.com/Kristiangonyea. With that being said, we have an exciting Summer issue for you to enjoy that is packed with a lot of great features.
One of the hottest trends in cocktails is the Espresso Martini. In our Leisure column, we explore some of your favorite spots to get this delicious drink along with a ready-to-use option from a local distiller, Little Water Distillery in Atlantic City.
Travel is always at the top of our list, and this issue is no different. But this time, we’re looking at adventures provided by travel tour companies. These businesses offer turnkey options with great service, whether you travel solo or in a group. Why risk your expensive trip when you can have Carefree Travel?
In our Art feature, we speak to our friend Bill Horin at ArtC about the Cut International Film Festival at the Levoy Theater coming in September. Expanding on Millville’s great history, the theater will be a great spot for filmmakers, artists, and the public to view these films while networking among their peers.
And speaking of art, let’s not forget the art of cooking. I started hearing about Saltwater’s pizza a lot last year and finally had the chance to catch up with owners David and Lori Salvo to get the secret behind their much-talked-about creations at this authentic Italian eatery in Margate.
I happen to be a big fan of BMW, having owned one. So, when the subject of an electric BMW SUV came up, I couldn’t resist knowing the history of the performance for this brand. In our On Wheels column, we check out the BMW iX and all its modern features.
And as always, we have lots of photos of local celebrities in our Social Scene. Speaking of social, please join us for the upcoming Abbacadabra show hosted by the Schultz-Hill Foundation featuring a musical tribute to the music of Abba. Proceeds support arts programs for local children and seniors.
This and so much more from our talented writers and dedicated marketing partners in the pages of New Jersey Lifestyle magazine. Please head over to NJLifestyleMag.com to see an augmented version of these articles online.

Must-Know Trends
A whole new season of fashion is upon us — think layers of thin and chunky sweaters, luscious leather boots, and new denim styles. We’ve got the scoop on the trends and staples you’ll want for a fashionable fall.
By Danielle DaviesFASHION
We can’t sugarcoat it — saying goodbye to summer is tough. On top of letting go of our beach days and breezy bayside nights, we have to endure new back-to-school schedules and traffic patterns (no one wants to get stuck behind a school bus). Come November, we’re even tasked with handling Daylight Savings Time. The end of summer can be a struggle.
Fortunately, there’s a bright side — the fall wardrobe. As hard as it may be to let go of our strappy espadrilles, sundresses, and beach bags, it’s made better knowing that a whole new season of fashion — think layers of thin and chunky sweaters, luscious leather boots and new denim trends — is upon us.
New Jersey Lifestyle magazine spoke with two of the area’s most popular boutiques — Talk of the Walk in Stone Harbor and Atlantic City, which hosted a fashion show we were lucky enough to attend, and Briana

Central Square in Linwood — about trends and staples you’ll want for a fashionable fall. Here, we’ve got the scoop.
Fall, Fun & Football
The casual and cozy fall look is iconic, and with good reason — there’s nothing better than warming up with a new sweater during that first chill of the year, whether it’s in the stands at a football game or walking the grounds of a winery. Both occasions call for comfortable digs, but there’s no reason comfort can’t be cute or classy.
“For fall, we really focus on basics and comfy clothes for the chilly weather,” says Briana Giannone, Co-owner of Briana Central Square. “Also some fun graphics for Sunday Football!”
At Briana Central Square, there are plenty of laid-back tops, perfect for pairing with your favorite leggings or joggers, including loose knits and pullovers from Electric & Rose that are ideal for that first post-beach season. And don’t shy away from all things sports. With “Football” and “Varsity” sweatshirts from Project Social T, you’ll be channeling your inner athlete — or athletic supporter — in no time.
And while it’s the season for football, the Reversible Peace Baseball Jacket at Talk of the Walk — with its navy base and cream sleeves with a chartreuse stripe — is an excellent choice for that first lightweight jacket of the season. Pop it over the ¾ sleeve V-Neck tee with a rhinestone pocket and additional dazzling details for an all-eyes-on-me afternoon. If you’re looking for something less bold, but equally cozy, try an oversized crochet knit sweater from Talk of the Walk — it’s just the right weight for a fabulous fall afternoon.

Patterns and Prints in Deeper Colors
Come fall, it’s not always chilly. Some days feel practically balmy, but when we’re in late September and early October, we want our palettes, if not our materials, to reflect the season. This is why the soft floral prints in some deeper, earthier tones from Briana Central Square are splendid for the fall season. Pair with some
strappy heels you’ve got your goto fall dinner dress.
At Talk of the Walk, try the exquisite leopard print blouse with Maribou cuffs. Unique and chic, this silky-smooth blouse is a definite statement piece that’s bound to make you feel like a million bucks, whether paired with some Frank Lyman jeans or the hyper-versatile black pull-on pants.
Pant Sets and Pant Suits
“Trending this fall will be pantsuits,” says Giannone. “We really went for a fun look with this bright pink velvet suit from

The single-breasted, hot pink suit is exquisite and striking — it could be considered the statement piece of the decade. If the color is too bold for you, try the plaid pantsuit from Gilner Farrar. With wide-legged pants and a tie belt paired with a short matching jacket, the suit is a much more daring spin on a more traditional print.
While pantsuits are great for work or an important event, pant sets are better suited for a casual afternoon out with friends. For those occasions, check out the rhinestone embellished striped teal pant set or the large pearl trim and drawstrings aqua pant set, both from Talk of the Walk. Both in beachy tones, the pantsuits provide a refreshing burst of color to autumn days.
Jackets
It might seem too early to think about jackets, but it’s never too early to find a spectacular addition to your fall wardrobe. And with so many options available, plenty of them lightweight, you may just have to get a few.
“We LOVE our jackets here at Briana,” says Giannone. “From leather to faux fur and Sherpa, it’s going to be hard to pick just one!”
From cropped faux leather moto jackets and oversized fleece vests to knee-length faux Sherpa coats in brown and leopard print, the options are varied and delicious at Briana Central Square. And the options at Talk of the Walk are just as diverse, with a faux leather chain trim jacket with leopard liner and a reversible raincoat with a print of “The Kiss” by Klimt — both your new best friends this fall. n

“BARTENDER, I’LL HAVE AN ESPRESSSO MARTINI, PLEASE”
The Espresso Martini has become one of the 10 most ordered cocktails in American bars. So, what are the magic components that make up a perfect Espresso Martini? We asked a few local bartenders who were happy to reveal.
By Molly GolubcowSmooth, potent, and delicious, the Espresso Martini has become one of the 10 most ordered cocktails in American bars according to a 2022 Nielson survey. In fact, this potent mixed drink even comes with its own urban legend. Supposedly, the dark and delicious martini was invented by a London bartender in 1983 when a fashion model asked for a drink that would “wake me up and f--k me up” all in the same glass. Whether or not that request actually happened, this vodka and espresso coffee drink truly has been shaking up the bar scene from coast to coast.
So, what are the magic components that make up a perfect Espresso Martini? Depending on who is making your drink, ingredients may include vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, sugar syrup, and coffee beans as a garnish.
Locally, any bartender will be more than happy to pour you this coffee concoction at many area establishments. Are you thirsty yet? If so, find a comfy seat at the bar or at your dinner table and say, “Bartender, I’d like an Espresso Martini, please.”
#cocktailenvy
For the “perfect cocktail,” Fran Northridge of Ventnor, New Jersey explains why an Espresso Martini at Tomatoes in Margate is her go-to place. “When you walk in and see people drinking those martinis at the bar, you can’t resist thinking I must

have one. #cocktailenvy. They are perfect because you get a little caffeine, a little buzz, and just the right amount of flavor. “
Northridge is not alone in her love of the ever-popular local Espresso Martini. Absecon, New Jersey resident, Sue Voci, looks forward to savoring her favorite after-dinner cocktail. Whether dining at Knife & Fork or Dock’s Oyster House in Atlantic City, Voci cannot get Espresso Martinis off her mind. “l always enjoy my meal, but I cannot wait to taste an Espresso Martini after my dinner. It’s smooth and delicious — like dessert in a martini glass that’s for adults only!”
From a bartender’s perspective, the Espresso Martini is in high demand. Kristina Rich, bartender at Nucky’s Speakeasy in Ventnor, New Jersey, sees the Espresso Martini as one of the most popular mixed drinks she pours. Rich elaborates, “As a bartender these days, I see the Espresso Martini as one of the biggest fads. The drink has a kick of caffeine and a great taste — I get a lot of requests for this one.”
DIY Beverage Bliss
Another way to enjoy an Espresso Martini (day and night) is to make your own. To do so, you need proper and quality ingredients.
Mark Ganter, CEO at Little Water Distillery in Atlantic City, proudly offers 48 Blocks Espresso Vodka
— a perfect Espresso Martini in basically one step. Once you purchase a bottle, all you need to do is pour, shake over ice, strain into a cocktail glass, garnish with three coffee beans, and the best part — enjoy every sip.
What makes 48 Blocks Espresso Vodka award-winning?
Ganter explains, “We spent about 6 months in research and

development on the ingredients, flavor profile, and final recipe with countless focus groups and staff involvement.
Unlike making your own or ordering one out, the proportions in the recipe are exact every time, and the taste and finish are consistent with every pour.”
And speaking of ingredients, 48 Blocks Espresso Vodka uses La Colombe — a premium international coffee roaster based in Philadelphia — to supply the cold-pressed Brazilian Espresso base in their product. Then, they create a coffee liqueur using their own Liberty Rum, a house-made simple syrup, artisan coffee, and a hand-crafted vanilla extract from the Classic Dessert company to add to the mix.
The end result using these carefully selected ingredients, according to Ganter, is a “velvety smooth, intensely flavorful, and balanced martini with the perfect crema as the top layer. The only thing left to do is add a lemon twist on top or float three coffee beans for good luck.” n
Why 3 Coffee Beans?
Topping an Expresso Martini with three coffee beans represents health, wealth, and happiness. The custom originates from the way Sambuca is served in Italy where the beans are referred to as con la mosca — literally translated to “with the fly.”
FIT FOR SUMMER
Summer is your chance to stay active, burn a few calories, and have fun in the process. Here’s a list of ideas for an active summer at the Jersey Shore.
By Robin StoloffWhat’s better than the Jersey Shore in the summertime?
For locals and “shoobies” alike, there is so much to do, drink and eat in our fabulous coastal towns. However, it is all fun and games until we step on the scale in September. While it is easy to have a “who cares, I’m on vacation” attitude, with a little effort, we can stay active, burn a few calories, and have fun in the process.
The list is endless, but here are some ideas for an active summer at the Jersey Shore.
WALK
We all love those “lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer,” but that does not mean our buns are plastered to our beach chairs. Every time you go to the beach, be sure to take a walk. Of course, there are other beautiful places to walk — our famous boardwalks, fantastic parks, trails, and nature preserves. One of the most underrated forms of fitness, walking is easy on the joints, requires no equipment other than a pair of sneakers, and is a fantastic way to take in all the sights. BIKE
Whether you pedal off to a destination or take a ride on the road or bike trail, cycling is an excellent form of cardio exercise. Almost everyone can ride a bike, from little kids to older adults, making it a favorite family activity. It is a law that kids under 17 wear a helmet for biking, rollerblading, or

SPLASH
One thing about the Jersey Shore, there is water everywhere. That gives us the opportunity to enjoy a variety of water activities. From riding a wave on a boogie board to surfing and standup paddle boarding, there is something for everyone. If you prefer to stay a little drier, try kayaking or canoeing. Another option is to take the family to one of our fantastic water parks. What a fabulous way for you and the kids to have fun and be active at the same time!
Here are a few of the best.

SKATE
However you roll, on a skateboard or on rollerblades, you are certain to burn some calories. There are skate parks just about everywhere these days. While the younger kids tend to flock to these facilities, we can always rollerblade on flatter ground at our own pace.

Another way to swing is to play a round at any of the area’s 9-hole or 18-hole courses. It might be a surprise that playing 18 holes of golf can burn 800-1,500 calories. If you walk and leave the golf cart behind, that number climbs to 1,200–3,000 calories. Drinking a few beers and eating a hotdog during the game diminishes some

We’ve got Atlantic City; need I say more? You have your choice of nightclubs and dance spots throughout this buzzing city. There are also plenty of bars and clubs with dancing and live music in almost every shore town, indoors and outside, under the stars. Bill Driscoll, OwnerBMW’S iX SUV AN ELECTRIFYING RIDE
The 2023 BMX iX SUV is described as fast, efficient, comfortable to drive, and meticulously well-built. Consider it everything you could want from a luxury electic SUV.
By Molly GolubcowON WHEELS
In the 1700s, Benjamin Franklin, the man famously known for flying kites in thunderstorms, envisioned that electricity would eventually power personal transportation. Almost 300 years later, the arrival of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has given car manufacturers a jolt, if you will. In a recent Reuters report, more than half of all cars on U.S. roads will be EVs by 2050. As a first-class leader in the automobile industry, these stats have not gone unnoticed by the BMW Group — offering several all-electric models, from compact to luxury. In fact, BMW plans to increase its share of all-electric vehicles to 50% starting in 2025. So, are you wondering if a car that is good for the planet may not be luxurious and sexy? If so, just take a look at (and take a drive in) the 2023 BMW iX SUV to see that the answer is a resounding “no!” According to Car & Driver magazine, the iX offers “just about everything you could want from a luxury electric SUV. It’s fast, efficient, comfortable to drive, packed with advanced features, and meticulously well-built.”
Let’s Talk Power
One of the myths centering around EVs is the lack of power compared to a traditional fossilfuel engine. The two iX models come complete with not one, but two electric motors that provide all-wheel drive and plenty of power: the iX xDrive50 — 516 hp and 0-60 MPH in 4.4 seconds, and the iXM60 — 610 hp, 0-60 MPH in 3.6 seconds. These electric motors, similar to their traditional counterparts, are expertly designed and built by BMW with the highest standards. As soon as you start moving, you can feel the supremacy of an iX —

Vince Morelli, ASE Certified Automotive Teacher/Instructor and owner of Providence Motor Cars in Absecon, New Jersey, details how impressive BMW technology has become, “The iX SUV stands out with electric visionary apps that can be monitored by your smartphone. It can check your range and charging station availability. The BMW iX SUV is also an

aggressive vehicle with over 600 horsepower, which overrides any muscle car from back in the day.”
A Wow of a Battery
The 105.2-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery for the iX delivers an estimated driving range of over 300 miles per charge; 307 to be exact. That means for a 366-mile road trip between Atlantic City and Pittsburgh, you would only need to charge the battery up one time.
According to Car & Driver, when the iX was tested on a 75-mph highway fuel economy drive, the results were surprising.
The two iX models come complete with not one, but two electric motors that provide allwheel drive and plenty of power.
Normally, highway driving reduces the overall driving range of an EV, but the iX recorded an impressive 290-mile range.
As for charging options, the iX uses DC fast charging that can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just 35 minutes when hooked up to a 200-kW connection — yes, only 35 minutes! For charging options, BMW has partnered with EVgo to provide a network of public charging stations across the country available for iX drivers. In addition, you can charge the iX on other popular networks as well as through a Level 2 home charging station.
Fashionable — Inside and Out
Inside and out, the iX boasts outstanding safety features and onboard technology. All models have a rear-view camera, parking sensors (front and rear), front collision warning system, lane departure warning, and blind spot assist. The interior is lined with fine materials and features a futuristic, large digital dashboard. The iX also comes with BMW’s iDrive infotainment system — wireless charging for smartphones, Apple CarPlay, and an in-car WiFi hot spot. The audio system includes SiriusXM® with 360L + 1 year Platinum Plan Subscription as well as a HiFi Sound System with 205-watt digital amplifier and 12 speakers.
Let’s talk comfort. Both iX models feature 3-stage heated front seats, heated steering wheel, automatic 4-zone climate control with preconditioning, as well as automatic-dimming interior rearview and driver’s-side mirrors.
As for the sleek exterior, BMW’s design and ingenuity speak volumes — from an optimized aerodynamic body to its 20” Aero Wheels with all-

From a maintenance perspective, Morelli sees changes in the way EV vehicles will need to be serviced. Unlike car repairs that he made with his father (who taught him the ropes), Morelli and now his son, Carmine, are ready for EVs. “It’s not going to be like the old days, where everyone knew a little bit about everything with regards to a car or truck. By Molly GolubcowWhether you plan to visit Paris, Beijing, or Miami Beach, you need to make travel plans — planes, trains, and automobiles. B&B or a 5-Star hotel? Cruise or land trip? Book a tour in advance to visit the ruins of Pompeii? How do I find a walking tour of old London? What’s the best way to see Denali in Alaska? So many details to cover before and during your trip.
Rather than Google your fingers off trying to cover every angle of planning a trip on your own, let experienced travel companies guide you. From booking your flight to organizing the perfect itinerary, experts in the travel industry can take care of details that will no doubt make your vacation memorable and hassle-free. So, let’s visit, pun intended, a few tour companies that have the experience and the know-how to make your next travel adventure a carefree one.
Gate 1 Travel
In 1981, Gate 1 Travel started with three employees based in suburban Philadelphia. Today the travel experts employ over 200 people around the world from Cambodia to Argentina to Israel. —Jeff Goldblumyou covered. For example, explore on your own the 9-Day Venice, Florence, & Rome by Rail package. Gate 1 does all the planning and booking — getting you their special rates. Once you arrive in Italy, your train and hotel itinerary are all set. However, you can decide what you want to visit and when independently.
If you prefer an escorted tour, Gate 1 features modern motor coaches and wide-ranging itineraries. They pride themselves on offering customers “one upfront price” that covers accommodations, transportation, most meals, and guided sightseeing. All you need to do is pack your bags! The rest of the planning will be taken care of by guides who escort you from the minute you arrive at your destination until they take you back to the airport to head home.
Avid traveler, Jan Creighton of Lakewood Ranch, FL, vouches for Gate 1 and its customer service. Creighton who shared the 3 photos below explains a recent travel glitch that Gate1 helped her navigate, “I had a trip to Egypt recently and my flight was canceled, the airlines rebooked me for the next day! When I called the emergency line at Gate 1, the agent said, ‘No way, you can’t miss the first day — you’ll miss The Great Pyramid’ and rebooked me herself… I so appreciated their dedication to helping travelers.”

LifeStyle Wine SUMMER OFFERINGS
By Michael BrayFinally, the sun is out and summer is here! I hope this finds you and your family in good health and ready for what summer “at the shore” has to offer. In this issue, I answer your specific questions. For those of you just tuning in, you can find me at, Michael@passionvines.com. I welcome you to email me with any wine-related questions and I will use this column to answer them. While I will not be able to answer them all here, I do promise to always provide an answer via email.
Q: Ron K. from Ocean City asks, “What is the difference between Prosecco and Cava?”
A: Prosecco and Cava are both popular sparkling wines, but they come from different regions and are made from different grape varieties, which results in some differences in taste and style. Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine that is made from the Glera grape. Prosecco is known for its light, crisp, and fruity flavor, with notes of green apple, pear, and citrus. It is typically produced using the Charmat method, where the secondary fermentation takes place in large stainless steel tanks rather than in the bottle. Prosecco is usually served as an aperitif or paired with light appetizers.
Cava, on the other hand, is a Spanish sparkling wine that is made primarily from the Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo grape varieties. Cava has a drier and more complex flavor profile than Prosecco, with notes of citrus, green apple, and almond. It is produced using the traditional method, also known as the Champagne method, where the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle. This method typically results in smaller, more persistent bubbles and a creamier texture. Cava is often paired with seafood, poultry, or light pasta.
Overall, Ron, the main differences between Prosecco and Cava are the grape varieties used, the production methods, and the resulting taste and style. Thanks for your question. We get asked this a lot in our stores.
Q: Debbie S. from Margate asks, “I like white wine and I typically drink Sauvignon Blanc. What else would you recommend I try?”
A: Hi Debbie! I have a hunch that you like white wines with high acidity. Acid is the mouth-watering feeling generated by and felt on the sides of your tongue. Think sour patch kids. Because of this, I’m going to recommend Gruner Veltliner (Austria), Albarino (Spain), Vermentino (Italy), and my favorite, Assyrtkiko (Greece)!
Q: Dave M. from Brigantine asks, “What does ‘estate grown’ on a wine label mean?”
A: “Estate grown” on a wine bottle means that the grapes used to make the wine were grown on a vineyard that is owned or managed by the winery that produced the wine. This means that the winery has control over the entire winemaking process from
vineyard to bottle, which can result in higher quality and more consistent wine. It also implies that the grapes were carefully selected and tended to on the estate, which can contribute to the unique character of the wine.
Q: Carol P. from Linwood asks, “Is all Riesling sweet?”
A: No, not all Riesling wines are sweet. Riesling is a versatile grape variety that can produce wines with a range of sweetness levels, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. The sweetness level of a Riesling wine depends on several factors, including the climate in which the grapes were grown, the ripeness level of the grapes at harvest, and the winemaking techniques used.
In general, Riesling wines from cooler climates tend to be higher in acidity and lower in sugar, resulting in drier wines. In contrast, Riesling wines from warmer climates can be riper and sweeter. Winemakers can also adjust the sweetness level of Riesling wines through techniques such as stopping fermentation before all the sugar is converted to alcohol or adding unfermented grape juice to the finished wine.
So, while some Riesling wines are indeed sweet, it is not true that all Riesling wines are sweet.

The Magic of Music
By Felicia L. NivenThe students filed in quietly, taking it all in as they entered the enormous performance space. Their eyes darted here and there, and in hushed whispers, they shared their excitement with their friends. Once settled in their chairs, the chatter began. For some students, it was their first time on a college campus. For most, it was their first experience seeing a symphony perform live.
The lights dimmed, the spotlight appeared, and the maestro stepped onto the stage. It was the start of a magical performance by the Bay Atlantic Symphony at Stockton University. This is what the Schultz-Hill Foundation makes possible, sharing and advancing the gift of music, art, and history, not only with students, but with seniors, educators, nonprofits, and the residents of Atlantic County.
“We have been fortunate to be a grant recipient since 2019, and it’s been truly inspiring for our students,” said Sara Caporilli, Chief Operating Officer, Principle Academy Charter (PAC) School. PAC is a K-6 public charter school, with students from a number of different sending districts, including Pleasantville, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Twp., Galloway, Somers Point, and Absecon. Students often come from economically disadvantaged families. “At PAC, we focus on core values, getting the kid’s college and career ready, and helping them grow into responsible world citizens,” said Caporilli. “Our school is committed to a purpose-driven arts and music curriculum, and we truly appreciate the chance for our students to step away from campus to experience a bigger picture.”
This year, the PAC students will join those from Highland Academy in Absecon in an Atlantic City Experience, courtesy of the Schultz-Hill Foundation and the Historic Organ Restoration Committee, Inc. The students will receive a private tour of The Atlantic City Experience Museum. They will walk behind the world’s largest pipe organ with organist Brett Miller, and participate in a Q&A with the artist and restoration team. Finally, they will enjoy a private concert featuring the organ, followed by lunch in the arena of Boardwalk Hall.
“So many of our kids come from the Atlantic City area but probably have never been inside of Boardwalk Hall,” said Caporilli. “We’ve been so fortunate to have our students participate in these programs, thanks to the Schultz-Hill Foundation.”
Students are just one focus of the Foundation, which also funds the Senior Music Series and the Mighty Writers Program. In fact, Schultz-Hill has a deep and broad influence throughout Atlantic County, with its DINA grants funding programs like MudGirls Studios Empowering Women, Atlantic City Arts Foundation Chalk About AC, and Seashore Gardens’ Music & Memories and Opening Minds through Art, among others.
The Schultz-Hill Foundation organizes one annual benefit concert to make this possible. It is the primary fundraiser to support a year of arts outreach programming.
Abbacadabra, The Ultimate ABBA Tribute
This year, the Schultz-Hill Foundation welcomes Abbacadabra, the Ultimate Abba Tribute on Friday, July 28 at 8:30 pm at the Superstar Theater at Resorts Casino Hotel. Flashback to the bedazzled 70s with pop and disco hits Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, and many others as the Foundation salutes one of the most captivating pop bands in the world. Wondrous vocals, fantastical costumes, and captivating choreography all help to recreate the fascinating disco days of yesteryear.
Resorts Casino Hotel is a presenting sponsor of the event. Limited $175-per-person VIP tickets include VIP Seating and a tax-deductible post-show “meet and greet” VIP Dessert & Champagne Disco Party with Abbacadabra, and may be purchased online at www.schultz-hill.org. General admission seating tickets are $35; preferred seating tickets are $50. Both are available through Ticketmaster or at the Resorts box office.
The Foundation is a (501c-3) tax-deductible charity in Atlantic City. For more information on the Schultz-Hill Foundation and its programs, including tickets for the benefit concert, visit www.schultz-hill.org. n
THE FILM FESTIVAL
Since the beginning of the 19th century, cinema has become the medium of mass entertainment. On September 22 and 23, Millville’s Levoy Theatre will continue its long history of entertainment with the CUT International Film Festival ‘Short Films for Quick Minds.’
By Michael CagnoOn display at the Thomas Edison Center in Menlo Park, NJ are two objects considered to be the beginnings of the movie industry, the kinetograph (a motion picture camera) and the kinetoscope (a peep-hole motion picture viewer). Since the beginning of the 19th century, cinema has become the medium of mass entertainment. These early films were often shared at Nickelodeon and vaudeville theaters. In 1888, Thomas A. Edison says, “I am experimenting upon an instrument which does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear, which is the recording and reproduction of things in motion...” Founded in 1908 and expanded in 1912 as the “New Levoy,” this original Vaudeville theater was a beacon in the arts. On September 22 and 23, Millville’s Levoy Theatre will continue its long history of entertainment with the CUT International Film Festival ‘Short Films for Quick Minds.’
Bill Horin is an awardwinning documentary filmmaker, photographer, and founder of ArtC, a nonprofit arts organization responsible for expanding the art of film in New Jersey. “We created CUT because we wanted to have a high-end festival in New Jersey that promoted the democratization of motion picture making by celebrating short films. Almost anyone with a vision, a story to tell, and a few friends, can make a film today. We encourage all manner of filmmakers, from professionals to amateurs, to tell stories and put them on a big screen for all to see,” states Bill.
Storytelling is an art form as
old as time. Even before we painted pictures on the walls of caves, we sat around the campfire and told stories. The ones who were able to captivate us with a little drama, pathos, comedy, and insight, were the ones we relied on to keep our histories and explain our world. Filmmaking is an advanced form of storytelling where you take sight and sound, and project a world onto a screen that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Cut co-founder, Chris Orazi of C.A.S Music Productions, strongly feels that such a festival allows the film community networking opportunities for writers, videographers, actors, designers, lighting designers, etc., while also forging lasting relationships. From an economic perspective, the CUT film festival will bring hundreds of visitors to the Millville Glasstown Arts District. They will dine in “our restaurants, and visit galleries, and special shops. The second year of CUT will have a bigger draw equating to a larger financial impact on these businesses,” says Marianne Lods, executive director of the Millville Development Corporation.
According to Diane Roberts, executive director of The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, one block down from the Levoy Theatre plans to take advantage of the increase in visitors during the festival and provide live music inside the gallery and

ArtC documentary, “Showtime!: The Story of Walter Webster & The Off Broad Street Players” will premiere on Sept 22 at 7 pm at the Levoy Theatre.” Founder & Artistic Director, Walter Webster, “The Off Broad Street Players will always be a passion of mine and I hope that audiences will see the magic that we, as artists, have created for nearly 25 years. I also hope this documentary will urge other people to join and participate in our group. Here’s to the next 25 years!!!”
In addition to hosting a premiere international film festival in Millville, the film industry seems to finally recognize Cumberland County as a hidden gem. The Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission, a grantor of the film festival, is excited to see the film industry grow in the county. Shared Service Coordinator at County of Cumberland Omarey Williams wants the industry to know there are excellent locations for different types of filming: agricultural, industrial, nautical, urban, and rural areas.
“Another advantage of filming in Cumberland County is its rich cultural and ethnic diversity,” says Omarey. n
As an employer, you probably know that the most valuable asset of your business is your employees.
Retaining those employees is crucial to maintaining consistency in your business, without the high cost of recruiting and training new employees.
Beyond the efficiencies that comes with seasoned staff, retaining employees also sends a message to your customers that you take care of your workers.
Customers develop relationships with employees and enjoy the familiarity of speaking to the same person when they call in to place an order or come in to do business.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift in the mindset of the country’s workforce. Originally referred to as the “Great Resignation of 2021”, workers continued to voluntarily leave their jobs at alarming rates in 2022. Many having realized the frailty of life, went searching for work with more purpose.
Now in 2023, although it has been challenging, you’re finally fully staffed again, and business is operating like a well-oiled machine. What can you do to make sure it stays that way?
1. Flexibility – After working at home for months or more, workers are standing their ground when it comes to returning to the office full-time.
2. Increased Paid Time-off – Increased paid time-off does not cost anything extra and chances are an engaged worker will be checking in anyway.
3. Defined Career Path- Work goals, similarly, to finding purpose at work, keep employees engaged. Discuss a vision for their future during reviews, and how you will support that journey. Listening doesn’t cost anything, making staff feel essential leading to higher productivity.
4. Better Benefits – Offering supplemental benefits is one of the best ways you can offer more to your employees, at little or no cost to you. These benefits provide additional protection for illness or injury, both ON and OFF the job, that a typical health insurance policy does not cover.
Recent surveys show that many employees still misunderstand how supplemental benefits work. With over 30 years of supplemental benefit knowledge and experience, The Forza Insurance Group will educate and engage your workforce. Our custom solutions increase employee retention so that your business doesn’t miss a beat.

David and Lori Salvo, owners of Saltwater in Margate, are serving up Italian food that is authentic and family friendly. Their creative Italian dishes would get the blessings from any Nona!
By Molly GolubcowNestled in the corner building on Adams and Ventnor Avenues in Margate, NJ, Saltwater serves up Italian food — authentic and family friendly. Whether a small batch of square Mushroom Rosemary pizza or an order of the heftiest (but fluffiest) homemade gnocchi in town, Saltwater serves up perfect plates — with just the right blend of seasonings.
And, speaking of the right blend, owners David and Lori Salvo epitomize the ideal pair to run a restaurant. Chef David worked for his father as a teen and opened bars and restaurants in his early adult years. Lori, a local realtor, compliments her husband on her sense of business. Lori explains with a wink, “What are the two things that people always talk about while relaxing at the beach: real estate and food!”
As a result, the Salvos create Italian dishes that would get blessings from any Nona! And speaking of Nona, any selfrespecting Italian grandmother knows that pasta needs to be boiled in salted water that tastes “…like the sea.” Add that culinary concept to the fact that the Salvos live in a beach town and you get the name of their restaurant — Saltwater, of course.
Let’s Start With The Pizza
To make authentic pizza that is Saltwater approved, the Salvos start with fine quality ingredients, mostly imported from Italy. Then, they hand mix small batches of dough in bowls that are scattered around the restaurant — the oldschool way never ever using a mixer. Salvo explains why they pride themselves in ensuring quality, “We never forget that we are only as good as our last pizza.”
When Saltwater first opened
EATS its doors four years ago, the Salvos decided to serve square pies because it was something different, and “they simply love it!” For example, the Italian Vegetable is a white Sicilian pie covered with roasted and sautéed peppers and grilled eggplant with a balsamic drizzle. If you’re thinking of a too-thick and doughy Sicilian, fugget about it! Whether red or white, their square pies are just right and crispy-thick like Sicilian, but amazingly light and airy.
For the 2023 season, Saltwater plans to add a new menu item — round pizza pies. Although they are a bit smaller than their square cousins, the Salvos are making sure they keep them “just as light, airy, and full of flavor.” For example, red pie selections include Pepperoni, Tomato, or Prosciutto. As for toppings, you can expect to choose from the usual suspects like sausage or veggies, but Saltwater “tops” that with options like long hots or arugula with shaved Regiano Parmigiana.
Although toppings are popular, the pizza itself is the foundation. Salvo explains how sometimes less is more, “The simplest food is the hardest to make, and we are always on a quest for deliciousness, so our favorite pizza is the simplest one, the old school, just amazing crunchy crust, topped with our Marinara sauce (tomatoes crushed by hand) then drizzled with the best extra virgin olive oil and a light dusting of Pecorino cheese.”
Clouds of Gnocchi
What happens in Saltwater’s kitchen, stays in their kitchen! So, don’t bother asking how they manage to make their gnocchi as fluffy as clouds. Salvo elaborates, “We always do things just a bit differently and it’s simply the way we like them!” Normally, the ricotta-filled pasta bites are about an inch long — about a knuckle’s length. Interestingly enough, the word gnocchi is derived from nocca, meaning knuckle in Italian.
Jennifer Seak, a Saltwater loyal fan, just loves the homemade gnocchi. Regardless of the choice — the Passelli with Proscuitto & peas in a blush sauce or a plain marinara sauce, she is enamored with each bite. Seak explains, “They are so delicate — like pillows of heaven.”
Another Saltwater gnocchi admirer, John Valenti, offers up the highest of praises, “The gnocchi was wonderful — light as a feather. They were right up there with my mother’s!”
Sauces that accompany the gnocchi are plentiful.
For example, try the Toasted Gnocchi appetizer — baked golden brown served with a side of blush dipping sauce. Other options include Ragu, for the meat lover — marinara sauce with turkey, meatballs, and sausage. Another favorite is the Sicilian Red — hot peppers, Sicilian olives, capers, and eggplant. And, according to Salvo, the Gnocchi Blush has “…a cult following on its own.” n

INTEREST RATE ENVIRONMENT IN 2023
Clients often ask about the effect the Federal Reserve has on interest rates. Often there is a misconception as to what rates they directly control vs. which rates the market dictates. While the Federal Reserve’s shortterm rate policy can influence all interest rates, it is not the sole determinant. The interplay of market forces, investor sentiment, and macroeconomic factors can result in divergent movements between short-term and long-term interest rates.
The Federal Reserve Bank does directly set the shortestterm lending rate through the Federal Funds Rate.
Banks receive this overnight lending rate on excess deposits, for example. Bonds that are shorter term, say 3 months, are heavily influenced by this rate. As the term of the bond increases, a broader range of market forces influences the rate.
Typically, you are paid a higher annual interest rate for locking up your money longer when buying a bond that matures further out. If you were to chart out on a line graph Treasury bond interest rates ranging from 3 months to 30 years, you would have something that is referred to as the “yield curve.” When the yield curve is “normal” it is upward sloping where the short-term interest rate pays less than the longer-term bond. A quick look at the current Treasury market in mid-May showed a 6-month Treasury paying 5.1% while a 10-year Treasury bond is only paying around 3.5%. Currently, shorter-term bonds are paying a higher interest rate than longer-term bonds. The yield curve is said to be inverted when this happens which is also a possible warning sign of an upcoming recession. This situation illustrates a scenario where despite the Fed raising its rate, longer-term rates are still not as high as you may expect.
Long-term interest rates are influenced by market expectations of future economic conditions.
The market could have lower long-term interest rates if the market predicts rates to decline in the future.
This could be for a number of reasons such as an expectation that inflation will continue cooling or lower than expected long-term economic growth. Ultimately, it is somewhat of a prediction of where rates will head in the future.
Bonds are also impacted by supply and demand dynamics. If economic conditions deteriorate globally, the demand for guaranteed government-backed U.S. Treasury bonds would likely increase as there is commonly a flight to safety among investors. This increase in demand would mean that the U.S. could then offer to pay a lower rate on their Treasury bonds. Additionally, if the U.S. offers a higher rate on their government debt than, say Europe, then this will create a greater demand for U.S. treasuries. This could then decrease the interest rate that U.S. Treasuries have to pay should international investors increase their demand for this U.S. debt.
As you can see from this discussion, given all these factors, it is very difficult to predict where interest rates will go. Clients commonly ask whether they should wait to buy a bond until after the Fed raises rates.
Even if the Fed raised interest rates, longer-term rates could simultaneously fall based on some of the market dynamics discussed. Market timing for either the stock or bond market cannot be accomplished with any consistency. When comparing bond investments it is typically best to consider what yield and income the bond will pay and consider whether this corresponds with your goals.
