What is caring?

This term we focus on the IB Learner Profile: Caring. As usual, Jennifer Park, Year 12, introcuces our topic.

LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS, HELPING... THESE ARE THE WORDS THAT WE CAN RELATE TO THE TERM ‘CARING’. CARING IS ABOUT SHOWING LOVE BY HELPING EACH OTHER.

Caring exists not between only different people, such as families, friends, teachers, couples, neighbors, fellow workers, and even strangers, but also people and animals, the environment, and even different objects that people love. Caring is not limited to human society, but can be seen across the whole world. Then why should and do we care about things other than ourselves? It’s because we and all the living things in the world have emotions. All living things can feel different emotions - sympathy, love, happiness, and satisfaction. Once we realise that someone desperately needs help, we naturally create sympathy in our minds, and that emotion creates a helpful attitude towards that person. We care even if someone does not need any help. If we love or respect someone, we naturally

try to make him/her happier and more comfortable by caring more about what benefits them than what benefits us. Caring makes us certain amount of satisfaction and happiness ourselves. We often think that we should do something huge or great in order to care for others and make them more comfortable. Actually, we can start from something small. For example, in the students’ daily lives, there are a great number of opportunities to care for others. We can be mindful about the actions and words that we use to towards others during the day. We can help classmates and younger students if they need any academic help by using our prior knowledge. We can also help them with their personal affairs by listening to them and giving them advice. Much simpler, we can show caring by saying “Thank you” “Good luck” or “Cheer up”. Even these small words and actions can give others love and hope. Caring is something that comes from small action and a simple willingness to help but it can create a huge positive effect on others.

by Jay Lee, Year 10, Noro What does ‘skeleton’ mean to you? For many it provokes negative ideas of death, sadness, coldness... Artists use it as an object of fear. However, everything could look different from the skelton’s perspective. It could be shivering from cold and bullied by the whole world with no blood for warmth, skin for protection - not even a heart. We should take a closer look at the skeleton; empathise with it’s situation. This skeleton needs care, we should give it a heart. We should share warmth and be caring to those in need of it.

Jiu Chang and Irene Jeong, both Year 8, both Jeoji discuss the validity of including ‘caring’ in the list of IB learner profiles.

‘RISK TAKING’, ‘REFLECTIVE’, ‘OPEN-MINDED’, ‘INQUIRERS’, ‘BALANCED’, ’PRINCIPLED’, ‘KNOWLEDGEABLE’… AMONG ALL OF THESE ASPECTS FOR THE IB LEARNER PROFILE, A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WILL THINK THAT ‘CARING’ IS THE LEAST IMPORTANT, AND THEY WILL WONDER WHY IS IT INCLUDED. HOWEVER, CARING IS VERY IMPORTANT; IN FACT IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS FOR AN IB STUDENT. THIS IS BECAUSE MAK ALL THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN IT HAPPIER. IF CARING MAKES WE’RE HAPPY, WE CAN LEARN BETTER! WE ALL WANT TO BE CARING PEOPLE. HOWEVER SOMETIMES IT ISN’T AS EASY AS WE THINK, SO WE DECIDED TO INTERVIEW SOME PEOPLE TO GET OPINIONS AND TIPS ON HOW TO BE A CARING PERSON.

Year 7 girl: “I think to be a caring person, we need to put a stop to bullying, and not be a bystander. We should try to help and get along with the bullied people.” Year 7 boy: “We should just try to talk with friends a lot. Also, when our friends have some problems, we should try to help solve them.”

Year 8 girl: “I think to be a caring person we need to stop what we are doing and look around. Your, friends, families, and even some people you know only by their names or faces, and ask them if they are alright and care for them.” Year 8 boy: “I think we should be kind to be a caring person.”

3

Year 9 girl: “If we constantly take a look at the people near by, and if we listen to the others and be respectful, I’m sure that we can be a caring person." Year 9 boy: “To be a caring person, you should be organised and think what I have to do next. Without organisation, caring about anything could not be done properly.” Year 10 girl: “ To be a caring person, I should be responsible. I should think of the consequence of my actions. For example, if I am responsible for my actions, and thinking of the people who will get hurt if I was being rude, I will be a caring person to them.” Year 10 boy: “First, we try to understand what people are “Fi thinking. We should try to predict how they are feeling, and we shouldn’t make people blame themselves.”

Year 11 girl: “I think paying attention to the detail in your life is the best way of being a caring person.” Year 11 boy: “Caring is a very important aspect which is needed to create a healthy society, especially in school. By caring for each other, people can prevent individuals from being isolated from others, and we can create healthy, successful friendships, which can last for a long time. ‘’

Year 12 girl: “Certainly, it is more important to be caring “Cer in words; even remarks that seem trivial can make someone’s day, or even change their lives! But one should not stop there to be truly caring. “Caring” is an adjective derived from the verb “to care”; to be truly caring is to take that compassion that you possess to the next level and to act on it with true n commitment, showing by deed that you really do “care” about the world around you.” Year 12 boy: “Caring is to be sad together when other people are sad, and to be happy when other people are happy.”

BIG 6

You’ve probably heard about them, you might even have had a chance to vote for them. But who are they and what do they do? Zi Won Kim, Halla asks all the right questions. FRONT: EUN HO SEO HEAD BOYY AND YUN HA HWANG HEAD GIRLL MIDDLE: AH YOUNG CHO AND CHANWOO BANG BACK: SOPHIE LEE AND LIZZIE MONAGHAN

Big 6 THE BIG 6 WERE CHOSEN THIS TERM TO REPRESENT THE STUDENT BODY OF NLCS JEJU. AS THE BIG 6 IS GOING TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN THIS SCHOOL, WE SPOKE TO SOPHIE LEE, AHYOUNG CHO AND DANIEL SEO TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO FOR THE SCHOOL.

What is the Big 6 all about? Ahyoung The Big 6 work as a link between students and staff. We ensure the voice of the student body is heard by the senior staff. That’s the main role, but we are also the student representatives, or the role models, of the school.

What are the roles of each member? Daniel & Ahyoung The Head Boy (Daniel) and Head Girl (Yunha) control the collaboration and unity between members and they put together the information and the content of the separate meetings held by the four other members. The School Council - Chanwoo and Lizzie Cha Boarding Life - Sophie Societies - Ahyoung.

What does this look like in practice? Sophie & Ahyoung The meetings for School Council, Boarding Life, and Societies are held each week separately. Then, the Big Six have their own meeting once a week to gather the information that comes up in those meetings. Lastly, they meet with the Vice Principals every Monday to present the student voice.

What do you hope to achieve for the school? Sophie, Ahyoung and Daniel We’d like to achieve the following: 1. Culture of student autonomy 2. Active communication within the school community 3. Affection and love towards the school.

What values will you promote in the school? Sophie, Ahyoung and Daniel We, the school community, including students and staff, should have mutual respect towards one another, between both staff and students, and between students themselves. Then, along with that should come mutual trust within the school community. Lastly, we feel that a sense of family in the school should be valued.

Why do you think you were chosen for this job? Ahyoung and Daniel We believe that the ability to communicate well and my experience as a leader of a group in the school community gave a good impression to the senior staff. Along with that, other factors must have been taken into account such as our affection for the school, the effort we put in for the school, and lastly, the balanced qualities of ourselves. By balanced qualities, we mean that ou we don’t only value one aspect of school life. So we value and perform well in academic studies, but we also put ourselves into other activities such as drama, music, dance and sport.

Introducing...

The

PSHE DEPARTMENT

I t's a fa m ily affa ir

Introducing... MRS COOKE INTRODUCES THE PSHE DEPARTMENT AND SUBJECT. CERTAINLY ONE OF THE LARGEST DEPARTMENTS, BUT IS IT ALSO ONE OF THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD? PSHE – it’s a short title, but one that is often misunderstood – does the “E” stand for education, environment, or enterprise? In fact, if we were to create an acronym for what this subject is about, it would probably include most letters of the alphabet at least once. So rather than trying to explain what the letters actually st stand for, it can be more easily described by the use of one letter. “U”. Or more accurately, “you”. PSHE is about understanding you and your place in the world – your thoughts and feelings, your actions and the impact of these upon others. You will investigate what future decisions you may need to make, and the consequences associated with these. Some of the content is very factual, for example you might learn about the dangers of smoking. What makes it a PSHE lesson, however, as opposed to a “health education” lesson, is that letter “U” – What is going to help you make an informed decision about whether to smoke? In this we might cover aspects such as whether you ar are a risk taker, a person who makes rapid, spontaneous decisions; whether you are someone who is easily influenced, and whether you have an addictive personality. We would also look at the consequences of the decision to start smoking, both for you and the people around you.

PSHE is important... ...because it allows the school to develop the students understanding of how the world works. Mr Monaghan ...because it gives you an opportunity to think about a variety of issues, linking together knowledge and ideas from different subject areas. Mr Paulin ...because it contributes in developing the emotional, cognitive, social areas of the students’ lives. Mr Campbell

What do students learn? We have been focusing on emotional intelligence in my Y7 and 8 classes understanding our emotions and learning impulse control. In Y9, we have been exploring career pathways and looking at the qualities, as well as skills, students need to be successful in their careers. Ms Collier PSHE this year has looked at learning about yourself and others. We have spent some time looking at what qualities people value. Students overwhelmingly chose caring as one of their vital characteristics, which not only shows a lot about their knowledge of a need to be caring but also shows a definite desire or want to be cared for by others. Mr Malley In year 11 we have looked at three extremely important areas of life; teamwork, communication and leadership. Mr Monaghan

So, PSHE is not just about learning a few facts about your health, and nor is it an opportunity each week to talk about your “feelings”, it is a subject in which you have the opportunity to explore, in a meaningful way, issues that will impact on your life and the importance of taking responsibility for your actions. In essence, PSHE is one of the most important lessons on your timetable. Without the ability to understand yourself and the issues that surround you and your relationships, a factual knowledge of any one subject alone will not help you to go on to enjoying and achieving a successful and fruitful adult life – one in which you also have a positive in influence upon others. So, whilst I doubt that a lesson in “U” would ever appear on your timetable, I urge you to make the most of your PSHE lessons, so that you can continue to learn about the most important topic that exists.

A caring story A TRUE STORY RETOLD BY YEJIN CHOI, YEAR 9, MULCHAT. One day, a poor boy, known as Howard Kelly, was hungry and his pockets were empty. He planned to ask for a meal at a nearby house. He knocked, and a lovely young girl opened the door. He lost his nerve and he asked for a cup of water instead of a meal. However, the young girl realised that he looked very hungry so she gave him a large glass of milk. After drinking, the boy asked, “how much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything” the girl answered, “Mother always told us never to accept payment for a kindness” “Then I thank you from my heart” said the boy. As the boy left the girl’s house, he didn’t only feel strong physically, but he was now prepared to start again. After several years, the young girl became deadly ill. The doctors in her town couldn’t find a way to save her, so she was sent to a hospital in a big city. Th didn’t really help, because even the doctors in That the big hospital said it would be very hard for her to survive. However, when one of the senior doctors heard the patient’s name, everything changed. He paid extra attention to the case and literally tried his best. Thanks to all the hard work he had put in, the patient eventually won the ba battle against her illness. She survived, and the time had come for her to pay her bills. Just before the business office sent her the bills, the senior doctor asked them to pass the final bill for his approval. Then he scribbled something on the paper, and the bill was sent to the patient’s room. When the girl got the bill, she instantly knew that it would take her the rest of her life to pay it all. However, her expression changed when she got to the bottom of the page. It said, “Paid in full with one glass of milk.” Dr. Howard Kelly

Beyond the classroom

WHERE CAN WE FIND CARING? BETWEEN A PARENT AND A CHILD, A YOUNGER AND AN OLDER STUDENT, AND A STUDENT AND A TEACHER. GIVEN THE FACT THAT IB LEARNERS SHOULD STRIVE TO DEVELOP A SENSE OF GLOBAL-MINDEDNESS, WE SHOULD ALSO FOCUS ON THE ACTION OF CARING AT AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. There are countless international organisations around the world that are continuing their efforts to care for and provide a better life for humanity. Save the Children tries to help the lives of children in need in the United States of America and around the world. UNICEF is an organisation that works for children’s rights, their survival, development and protection based on the Conventions on the Rights of the Child. Save the Children, a non-governmental organisation founded in 1919, promotes children’s rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries. Save the Children helps keep children healthy so that they do not fall behind or drop out of school. Because of their efforts, Save the Children’s education programmes reached approximately 10 million children in 2011.

Meanwhile, UNICEF is also working really hard to make the world a better place to live. The organisation’s work covers Child Survival and Development, Basic Education and Gender Equality, HIV/AIDS and Children, and Child Protection. UNICEF carries on global efforts to end preventable child deaths, works with governments, national and international agencies and civil societies to support effective and life-saving actions, and so on.

What can you do? Write a letter to the officials of organisations demanding for active, altruistic humanitarian work. Address the importance of the issue by organising campaigns and raising funds with people around you. Become a member of a charity, keeping in mind that there are people desperately in need of help and care on the other side of the globe. Remember: you are a really small part of the global community, but you can empower the world by making a real difference!

LOUIS SON, HALLA, REPORTS ON THE MEDICAL CENTER IN OUR SCHOOL, THERE IS ONLY ONE MEDICAL CENTRE THAT MANAGES ALL OF THE STUDENTS’ ILLNESSES. BECAUSE NLCS JEJU IS A BOARDING SCHOOL, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS HAVE TO RELY ON THE MEDICAL CENTRE WHEN THEY FEEL SICK. ALL OF THEIR MEDICAL PR PROBLEMS ARE DEALT WITH BY OUR FOUR FANTASTIC NURSES: MRS BURFORD, MRS PIERCE, MINJI AND SCARLET.

THE MEDICAL CENTRE Is there any difference between foreign students and Korean students?

Which type of students are the hardest to handle? And why? I don’t find any students difficult to handle. It is only difficult when their English language is limited and they are unable to explain clearly to me what is wrong with them.

No, they all have the same medical needs at times.

Have you ever experienced a student who you did not want to care for? No, everybody deserves to be treated the same.

What does ‘caring’ mean to you? It means looking after someone’s physical, social and emotional needs. Showing empathy towards them holistically. Caring doesn’t just mean physically helping someone or giving tablets(pills) but listening to their individual needs, acknowledging their issues and helping find a solution to help them.

As you know, the process of getting treatment in the medical centre is time-consuming, such as waiting for the duty teacher to give them a permission slip. As a result, some students feel offended by the need for a medical slip when they are in pain. How do you feel about that? Medical slips are necessary to keep a record of who has been in. They are also kept and sent to house masters, so they are aware of their students’ illnesses, symptoms and treatments during the day. If we didn’t have this system, students would come in at all times and unnecessarily for any small symptom. Then, the waiting times would be a lot longer! We also need to know where students are during the day.

How should we care for ourselves? Sleep well, eat well, drink plenty of water and be happy. Most symptoms we see can be overcome by these simple ‘good living’ practices.

Caring for the environment

SELENE LEE, YEAR 11 JEOJI, ENCOURAGES US TO TAKE ACTION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. EVERYDAY, WE WAKE UP AND BRUSH OUR TEETH, LEAVING THE WATER TAPS OPEN. WE STAY LONGER IN THE SHOWER (ESPECIALLY IN WINTER). WE TURN ON THE HEATER, AND LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS AND HEATER. MOST OF OUR DAYS START BY WA WASTING VAST AMOUNTS OF ENERGY THAT WE DON’T EVEN NEED. Last year, Green Club held a Green Week. We had a week of no elevators, turning off lights, computers, and smart boards. Remember? There was another ‘green week’ last half term focused on reducing food waste. Green Club members met with the J&J catering manager to figure out how much food waste our school is producing everyday. Eunseo, from Green Club, said, “The catering company collects all the food waste from breakfast, lunch, and dinner and weighs it everyday. It weighs about 200 kg per day.” 200 kg per day! Eunseo became aware of the food waste problem in our school and planned Green Week to make people aware of the problem and to reduce food waste.

We all know that food waste is a problem, so what are we going to do about it? Our opinion and beliefs are not what are important. It is our actions. This was best shown when we asked a group of people about their commitment to the environment and whether it was their responsibility to pick up litter. Out of 500 people, 94% agreed and answered it was their responsibility. Then, to test their commitment, the research team scattered litter. Guess what? Only 2% of the people li followed through with their commitment. This is not activism. It’s ‘slacktivism’. Green Club is a great chance to put our beliefs about preserving the environment into action. Anyone out there who cares about the environment, don’t just sit there! Who cares if you care about the environment if you’re not taking any action. Join the Green Club and try. If you don’t want to, there are many ways to save our environment. I just need to say taps, sa light, heating to you. Start being an activist!
