STUDENT LEADERS GREAT EXPECTATIONS SERVICE STUDENTS & TEACHERS
1
A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju We congratulate many students this week who have risen to the challenge to ensure that school continues. As always they are fully supported by their inspiring teachers as well as their parents. These two weeks have been very very hard work for our Year 11 and Year 13 students who have been undertaking their examinations in preparation for iGCSES and the IB Diploma Programme. This experience is essential for their preparation and so that they can learn from this experience and focus more accurately on targeting their study, leading up to the final examinations. Congratulations too, to our new BIg Eight who are now settling into their role and have many ideas and plans for the year ahead. We are also delighted with how our new students are settling into School and embracing the challenges and opportunities. I would urge everyone in our community to ensure that we welcome and support them in our school as they settle and grow. We are a community with a clear identity as NLCS Jeju and it is necessary in this time of increasing isolation that we all focus more on being part of a community and the responsibilities this carries rather than self interest. We must be an inclusive community and so the speaking of English is essential around school and over this term we will all be working to ensure that students remember this especially when they are only in school for certain days each week as otherwise some experience loneliness and isolation. We are also aware that not speaking English will have a detrimental impact on students’ studies as they follow a British/international curriculum. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal
WINTER STUDENTCONCERT LEADERS

Our New Big Eight Every year our Senior School chooses their new leaders from Year 12 and their leadership term runs from January to December. The end of last year saw strong competition and some excellent applications from our current Year 12s. All applicants are proven leaders and have contributed to the School in many ways so this was a very difficult choice. Not only did the Senior School Leadership Team contribute their thoughts and choices but other teachers, leaders and the students themselves had a say.

We were very excited to welcome some new Year 6 students at the start of term. It’s daunting starting a new school and we all aim to help every single student settle in. We have made a full new class in Year 6 so many of our students could share experiences with new friends. Ms. LaiLai Luo, one of the class teachers has shared some thoughts from students new to NLCS Jeju. We absolutely love this piece by Lily Kim. She is going to rule the world!
Great Expectations By Lily Kim

It was a good day. It was the start of a new year and I was pumped for a new day and it was great with magic and rainbows and everything was awesome, end of story. Okay, who am I kidding. Let me tell you what really happened. So I’m not lying about the first part. I actually was pretty successful walking up to the front gate, and The only problem was I had no idea where I was going. Eventually, after standing there like an idiot for 5 minutes I tried my luck and just followed this random guy who looked around my age. I know, it was stupid, but you would’ve done the same thing if you had been there. And thankfully I was on the right track. I looked around trying to think of asking somebody where I was. An older girl asked me if I was new and I replied with a quick nod. She immediately pointed me in the direction. I thanked her and then went in that direction, another problem hit me in the face. There were two buildings there and frankly I’d been too excited to hear that she knew where I needed to go to pay much attention. So technically this was my fault.

Continuing this resulted in me having a full-fledged panic attack, silently in my head. I did end up finding where I was going and finding a few friends along the way. For the remaining time of the week, our classes continued online, remaining in contact and within reach of classes with Google Classroom. Although some may have had a few issues, with the new learning education system for the remaining time, the class still continued and was a pleasant experience. And my first day and week was quite a wonderful experience. Our subjects included Computer Science, Science, English, Swimming, Dance, Mathematics, Humanities, English, Mandarin, Physical Education and of course last, but not least, Tutor Time. We used a program called Google Meet helping us to resume class online. It’s basically Facetime with 22 people at the same time. For the rest of the week, classes stayed on the same regular schedule following your timetable. Find the link, take the class, move on to the next one. To end this first week was a pleasant time and I look forward to more.
New School, New Life by Jason Jung Jason Jung - another new student - shares his thoughts here. His writing is also fantastic. This class is going to be amazing and we are so happy to hear how welcoming everyone in School has been. January 4 was the day I began a new school life at NLCS Jeju. And it has been a week since I joined NLCS and I still remember the first day very vividly. I heard the alarm clock, and that was when I woke up. I felt nervous, but also excited because it was the first day. I have waited a long time for this day! I shouted to mom, “I woke up!”, and began changing clothes. The uniform of NLCS was better than I expected. When I changed my clothes, I felt like I already was a part of the school. Then, I walked to my mom and said, “Let’s go!” When I got to the front door of NLCS, I saw my friend and ran to him. I was feeling nervous, but because of my friend, I felt calmer. We went into the door and lined up. We saw our tutors and went to our classrooms, and carefully listened to the tutor’s sayings. Actually, there was no need to be nervous, everyone in the school was so friendly. This day was an induction day. The Little Eights, who are the representatives of NLCS talked about NLCS and took us on a little tour. Thanks to them, we learned more about the school and became familiar with the school. At lunchtime, I ate lunch with the students who had been in NLCS for a long time. I felt more comfortable by talking to them and eating lunch with them. When I completed my daily schedule, I felt satisfied.

Overall, I thought that I had done a pretty good job in a new school. However, we started doing online learning, because of the COVID. Even though the location is not the school, but my house, I am doing school work just like when we were not online!

Seyfried Sung and her team have been working hard, wondering how they can support less fortunate members of the Jeju community. They have come up with the concept of Give Up and Give Hope where students and staff at NLCS Jeju can give up their own meals to fund meals for others. Please read Seyfried’s letter (attached) and ask yourself what you can do to help.Thank you to our students for showing that they appreciate their good fortune and think about others.

In the new year, our students are always looking for a way to help and support their neighbours and the local community by sharing what they have. We are excited to share this great story that Ensemble Ami became one of the first donors of the 2021 new year. They visited the Jeju Community Chest of Korea on January 1, 2021 and donated the prize money from ‘the First 4.3 and Peace Video Contest’. Year 10 students, Seok Hyeon Moon and Jinyeong Oh, co-representatives of Ensemble Ami, who have consistently donated their talents through music performances, said they decided on this donation “to help our neighbours suffering from COVID 19

Since 2018, we have learned about the Jeju 4.3 Uprising and Massacre, a deep scar in Jeju History, through performance at the Jeju Provincial Museum of Art 4.3 Concert and the Alddreu Airfield Memorial Concert. We performed there as a talent donation. As a student on Jeju, we were embarrassed that we didn’t know much about this important history, but after that, we decided to participate in the video contest to share and not to forget this sad painful history.

Ensemble Ami was awarded in ‘the First 4.3 and Peace Video Contest’ for its work titled ‘Playing the Pain of the Day in April’. This video shows a desperate photo and record, promise not to forget this pain and a performance of ‘Gasiri’ with consolation at Alddreu Airfield and hangars. You can watch this piece through this link. ‘Gasiri’ is a song expressing sorrowful feelings and it is also the name of a village which got seriously damaged during the 4.3 Uprising and Massacre. Seok Hyeon and Jinyeong have more volunteer plans this year. “Starting with a talent donation performance in ‘Hope 2021 Share Campaign Launch Ceremony’, we are organizing a donation relay concert with the subtitle ‘2021 Sharing Classic: I, Family, and Neighbour’. Non-contact music concert, held this month, was the first in this relay. Ensemble Ami keeps performing for healing and consolation at libraries, art museums, welfare centres for elderly, hospitals and multicultural centres. We are planning to have the second concert at the campus or Gotjawal provincial park to raise hopes against COVID 19. Our fundraising activities will also continue with busking or producing some merchandise such as a mug.” We are looking forward to listening to their amazing music performances and lots more volunteer stories this year!

Computer Science
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Head of Computer Science, Mr.Tajvir Singh has shared news of more student success. Many of our computer science students took part in the first round of the American Computer Science League (ACSL) with thousands of other students from all over the world. ACSL consists of 4 rounds and a final round in the USA. Each round has two types of tasks such as a programming task - this lasts 3 hours and assesses each student's programming and problem-solving ability. There is also the fundamental computing task to assess students' knowledge and understanding of Computer Science. Contest 1, was held on Dec 19 2020 online. We have three teams participating in this competition with each team consisting of five students. The intermediate team (Year 10 and 11) got an amazing 100% score in the first round. The Senior team has done well and achieved a 90% score in the first round. The Junior team (Year 7, 8 and 9), have also done well by securing 100% marks in fundamental concepts and 2 students got 100% in programming tasks. Some of these students are entering for the first time so this is an amazing achievement. Round 2 will be held on February 6, 2021 and we’ll keep you posted! Please contact Mr. Singh or his team if you’d like to know more.
STUDENT WRITING Senior School We are proud to share two great examples of student writing. Mr. Sam Wilson shared a piece of work by his student, Andrew Ki Myoung Cheon. All our teachers see wonderful work daily but Mr. Wilson was prompted to share this with us all and he explains why “This essay, from Andrew in Year 12, is strong on a number of levels. Firstly, Andrew handed in this homework several days early, demonstrating his excellent work ethic. Secondly, it is a pretty lengthy and developed piece of writing, at almost 800 words (the HL essay, which is 20% of the course, needs to be only 1,200 words). Finally, the essay itself has a few noteworthy qualities: Andrew’s thesis (that the poem is really about a loss of individuality) runs through the entire essay structure; he has shown his ability to use the context of a text to back up his arguments; and finally, he has had some success in analysing not just the language, but also the structure, of the poem. “ LINK TO ESSAY HERE
Korean Youth Honor Society
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Congratulations to Sekyoung Hwang who has had her writing published in the magazine of the Korea Youth Honor Society, UNSEEN. This is a great achievement and Sekyoung talks about the process and how she was inspired to take part. “The Korea Youth Honor Society (KYHS) is a youth academic volunteer group and our members participate in public awareness promotion of diverse global issues by writing and publishing articles in ‘Unseen’. We investigate and write about the global issues that we choose and the biannual journal is spread to the community. I participate in KYHS because I want to study more deeply in the subjects that I want to major in the future. When choosing the topic of my first article which is drug addiction, I wanted to write a paper about something that a wide variety of people can read with interest. The second paper that I wrote was about hormones which is the one that everyone knows but not much in detail. In order to build and strengthen my biological knowledge, I specifically focused on the interaction between hormones and human behaviours. Through the process of research, I was able to deepen my knowledge and was able to take a step forward to the future. I was proud to see myself grow stronger throughout the process. The subject of the thesis to be written in the future is the drug delivery system, and I will continue to write articles so that I can focus more on my future.” LINK TO UNSEEN ON ISSUE
TEACHERS
North London Collegiate School Jeju
We are always amazed at all the extra talents our teachers have and everything that they do to keep professionally updated and to grow their skills and talents! Year 4 teacher, Mr. Mark Eyton Jones has published a book! As part of the Christmas Bedtime Stories last year, he read his newly published story of Flob Lost. Flob is a little alien who visits various animals and tries to make friends and be kind - despite language differences. Mr. Eyton Jones says he wanted to share the message that we can all be kind even if we don’t always have the language skills to communicate fully. It’s a message we can all learn from! A natural curiosity and love of learning can help overcome language barriers.
Mr Eyton Jones has long held an ambition to publish a book and he worked on this one while teaching his Year 1 class, last year. “They really helped me,” he says. “I read to them and they gave me advice - and told me what I’d got wrong! I tested out Flob’s language on them. It’s true to say that children really are the toughest critics!” You can buy a copy of Flob Lost on Amazon.com/Amazon.co.uk AND in the new bookstore in the GEC! Enjoy!
ALUMNI STORIES
North London Collegiate School Jeju
We are in our Tenth Anniversary year and have built up a wonderful community of NLCS Jeju alumni. We would like to hear stories from all our illustrious ONLJers! Where in the world are you now? What are you up to? We look forward to a day when you can visit us in School. In the meantime we share the story of one of our ONLJ Committee members. 이채윤 / Sophie Lee - Global Team Leader - Class of 2014 I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University before completing my Masters of Science in Architecture and Urban Design at Columbia University this May. During my undergraduate programme, I came across design challenges that required me to focus on the importance of architectural elements articulating existing contexts, and how public spaces are designed, leading me naturally to gain interest in urban design. Moreover, the architecture and urban design program was appealing to me as it was going to provide me with skills to better communicate and demonstrate new strategies through its emphasis on advancing group-oriented projects. College life as an architecture student was very interesting. During my undergraduate programme, I got an opportunity to work and practically live with my studio friends who came from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. With friends from the studio, I was able to take part in school-wide organisations and events such as the school fashion show and as a designer. Also, at both universities, I did a lot of traveling and the most recent studio travel was to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
After going from one school to the other non-stop, I am now taking a break before searching for a job! I want to refine my digital media skills and also find a new hobby. In the near future, I hope to find a job that values solving design problems related to climate change, water urbanism and migration. Sport was a very big part of my school life. During my time at NLCS Jeju, I thoroughly enjoyed participating in all netball-related events. The most memorable moment was when our team came second place in the national netball tournament! I am happy to be part of the Alumni network and hope to meet many more ONLJers over the next few years!
