PRINCIPAL’S LETTER Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju Please congratulate our students in Year 13 who have been receiving offers for their preferred US choices for Early Decision which have included Ivy League and Ivy League Plus universities as well as specialised colleges. In terms of the UK we have students with a range of top offers for Russell Group universities as well as medicine. We are also pleased to congratulate the three students who have been offered places at Oxford. The process is still under way and once the students have completed their mock examinations they will be in a position to update the School fully on all offers and we will be able to provide full details. The process continues as students await decisions from universities over this term and this includes the release of regular decisions from the US at the end of term. Well done Year 13 on your successes to date! We have also been delighted to congratulate students across other years for the success in LAMDA and Music examinations this week. Well done to the students, many of whom were awarded with distinctions. We are pleased to welcome NLCS Jeju academic speakers during the year and we will be including in the newsletter further details of how our academic speakers are working with our students and enriching their curriculum. We are always pleased to receive offers of support for our students from visiting speakers and so we are aware that within our parent body we have a great deal of expertise and so please contact Vice Principal, Henry Wiggins, if you would be able to participate in events which enable our students to explore other careers and specialisms to NLCS Jeju as well as academic matters.

Here are the biggest stories from around the School this week.

MOCK EXAMS Our IGCSE and IBDP students have had a busy start to Term 2 with their mock exams. We are very proud of our students’ hard work and positivity throughout this period. Remember, we are all here to help and guide you through the exam period, your wellbeing is important to us. Please speak to your Tutor or one of our Emotional Guidance Counsellors if needed.

US AND UK UNIVERSITY OFFERS We are delighted to announce that a number of our students have received offers from the US and UK - these offers are all for world class universities, through the early decision process. The offers from the US include three Ivy League Universities and five Ivy Plus, as well as a number of prestigious universities. From the UK, we have also received three offers from the University of Oxford and three from Brunel University London (for Medicine). Cambridge are yet to make their decisions. We will update you all as we are notified of more offers. Well done to you all! We hope to share individual success stories soon.

The Main Event TES AWARDS - SHORTLIST We are very pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted for two prestigious TES Awards - the winners of the categories will be announced in April, however, we are more than happy to have been shortlisted as the two categories are linked to the very important topic of wellbeing - of both students and staff.

Student Mental Health Initiative of the Year The shortlisting was in response to all our work around supporting the mental health and wellbeing of students but with a focus on three key initiatives that have been implemented at NLCS Jeju over the past 12 months. 1. MyConcern 2. Wellbeing Manager 3. Komodo As well as working closely with student led groups - the Student Welfare Awareness Group and the Student Council, who are also integral in this shortlisting. “Through the synergistic use of these diverse tools, we have cultivated a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to measuring and nurturing our students’ mental health, ensuring a holistic and proactive support system for their well-being.” - Mr. James Caudle Thanks to all our staff, in the pastoral teams and beyond, who help to make student mental health a priority at NLCS Jeju.

Staff Wellbeing Initiative of the Year The School has been shortlisted for its ‘Common Room Committee’. A volunteer group that arranges a number of weekly, regular and one off events for all teachers, support staff and their families. There are currently 17 weekly activities and since the formation of the CRC in 2021 there have been over 150 activities/events. These include : volleyball, beekeeping, Olle walks, cooking classes, jewellery making, language exchanges, wreath making, book club, spin cycle, open water swimming, quizzes, tai chi, dance fitness, badminton, football, Gaelic football, climbing Halla, choir, yoga, meditation and much more. Thank you to all the staff who volunteer their time to arrange and host events and activities - it is much appreciated.


The Main Event CHEMISTRY ENRICHMENT WEEK We are looking forward to the return of our Enrichment Weeks - the next one is our Chemistry Enrichment Week which is always a lot of fun. The Chemistry Department and our chemistry loving students bring science to life in an enjoyable and engaging way! We will share photos throughout the week.

What is light haunted house? In a dark room, you put on light diffraction glasses and step inside. The lights in the room are scattered, and the glasses refract the light, creating strange and spooky effects. Will you find your way out, or will you be trapped forever?? The bending of light

Ooho uses a double membrane to contain water based on two ingredients: sodium alginate, a natural thickener from algae and calcium chloride.

How to Make an Ooho? Measure one tablespoon of Sodium Alginate solution Gently set the spoon with the solution into the large bowl of Calcium Lactate solution being sure to keep the solution in the measuring cup from pouring out. Allow the spoon to become completely immersed before tipping it over to pour the solution out. It may be difficult to see the ball forming - this is normal. You may add more than one "ball" of sodium alginate to the calcium lactate bath at a time. Set a timer for 10 minutes (minimum) and remove the "water bottles" with a slotted spoon.

NLCS Jeju Awards and Achievements ABO SUPPORTERS AWARD “The NLCS Jeju ABO Supporters is a student-led group working to raise awareness and proliferate blood donation practices in our surrounding community. In April 2023, we were appointed as one of the groups for the 9th Red Campaigner by the Korean Red Cross. The Red Campaigner is an annual competition held by the Korean Red Cross to encourage students to lead creative initiatives to promote blood donation. As one of the high school representatives to advocate for blood donation culture, we have been funded by the Red Cross to carry out various activities such as uploading weekly card news, holding fundraisers during Biology Enrichment Week, and inviting blood buses to our school campus. Our efforts and commitment have been recognised by the Korean Red Cross, and we are to receive a national award for the commendation of service efforts from the Head of the Blood Management Division of the Korean Red Cross.” - Ms. Kym Prichard

Other News TITANIC DRESS UP DAY Yesterday our Year 2 students took part in our annual Titanic Dress Up Day. A day where the young children brought learning to life. They took part in a number of activities and learnt all about this historical event. Learning through play and activity is proven to enhance and deepen the level of knowledge in a subject. DR JENNIFER HARTLEY “We were thrilled to welcome back Dr Jennifer Hartley this year. Jennifer, who is an acclaimed Applied Theatre Practitioner, hosted a number of workshops for our students from Year 8 through to Year 12. The Year 8 drama students have been working on a topic called Verbatim Theatre which uses spoken texts from controversial issues in order to create a dramatic script; Jennifer has worked with each Year 8 class and used newspaper headlines on the topic of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. With the three Year 10 IGCSE classes, Jennifer has used fairy stories as the starting point however the focus of the work is on the characters not involved in the story such as the father of Little Red Riding Hood and the mother and father of the Wolf. This technique allows the actors to explore each character’s motivations from a different audience perspective. And finally, with the Year 12 IB Theatre students Jennifer has been working on a series of 9-minute monologues called ‘Confessions’ whereby they have used techniques from Augusto Boal’s theatre practice known as ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ which the students have been learning about in their IB Theatre lessons.” - Mr. Ian Peirson, Head of Drama.

CHARITY CONCERT Jennifer Lee (Year 9), along with other students from Jeju international schools, arranged and performed in a charity concert on 13 January at Shinhwa World. The Peace Prayer New Year’s Charity Concert raised money for the preservation of fir trees which are in danger of extinction due to climate change. The students also wrote letters expressing their prayers for peace - which will be delivered to the United Nations. Read more here. Well done to Jennifer and the other students who took part. Other News

Our next Senior School Parent Workshop focuses on the Digital World. We encourage our Year 7 to Year 11 parents to join us for this informative session which will cover the challenges that not only your children face online but the challenges also for us as a School and you as parents. We will also discuss our new approach to dealing with peer on peer abuse, including cyberbullying, and the Power of Zero Programme.

HOUSE COUNTDOWN Our Junior School students recreated the popular television show, Countdown, for their House Competition last week! Lots of fun was had solving tricky maths problems and unscrambling anagrams. A great way to learn new skills and beat the clock in a fast paced activity.


Other News YUJIN CHOI AWARD In honour of their daughter, Yujin Choi’s parents have generously arranged an annual scholarship of $1000 - given to a student who demonstrates the same passion and dedication to the arts as Yujin. This year, Sihyun (Stella) Kim (Y12) was selected to receive the award during our end of term assembly in December. Stella is now able to decide how the money will be spent at the School to benefit not only her, but other passionate students. We thank Yujin’s family for their kind support of our students and the Arts at NLCS Jeju. Well done Stella, this is well deserved.

SUGARCANE PAPER Seoha Han (Y10) has been working hard to answer the question ‘How can we continue to use paper without chopping down a single tree?’ and she has come up with a solution! “NLCS Jeju will soon start to transition from white wood pulp paper to a much more sustainable alternative; sugarcane paper. The paper contains 100% sugarcane, 0% wood pulp, and 0% bleaching chemicals. The subtle oatmeal shade and the absence of toxic, non-biodegradable bleaching chemicals ensure that it is both pleasant for your eyes and healthy for your skin (note: just because it’s made of sugarcane doesn’t mean it’s “tasty for your tongue. Hopefully this is common sense for all of you!). In the future, NLCS Jeju will not only use sugarcane paper on campus but you can also choose this eco-friendly paper when printing students’ assignments. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you absolutely have to use paper of the colour WHITE for specific purposes (e.g. art), please do not worry, you may use certain selected copy machines/printers. If you need to print ordinary materials that do not require the background colour white (e.g. worksheets, documents, notes), also please do not worry as the sugarcane paper is great for printing (I print EVERYTHING with sugarcane paper). I truly hope everyone reading this will actively participate in becoming a school that cools the Earth, one page at a time.” - Seoha

OUTDOOR EDUCATION YEAR 8 AND YEAR 9 OUTDOOR EDUCATION TRIP Following on from the success of our previous trips, we are very pleased to confirm that our Year 8 students have the opportunity to travel to Pyeongchang and our Year 9 students to Seoraksan later this year for their residential activity trip. CAS CAS INTERVIEW Chloe Lee (Y12) interviews Gabrielle Oh (Y12) Chloe: Can you provide a brief overview of your CAS experiences? Gabrielle: Firstly, I’ve been involved in swimming as my activity section. For creativity, I’ve delved into baking and cooking. Lastly, I’ve taken on the role of a mentor in Bryant called ‘The Cool Chemists’, where I assist Junior School students in conducting engaging science experiments for creativity.

Chloe: What were some challenges you faced during your CAS experiences, and how did you overcome them?

Gabrielle: One significant challenge I faced was the initial difficulty in selecting an

activity. I found myself lacking options for the activity slot as I wasn’t particularly active, and none of my existing CCAs aligned with this category. To address this, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and explore something entirely new – swimming. Although I hadn’t considered it for years, it turned out to be a rewarding decision, and I now see it as one of the most enriching aspects of my CAS journey. ​​

Chloe: In what ways do you think your CAS experiences have contributed to your personal growth and development?


CAS Gabrielle: I think it gave me the opportunity to stay fit and stay healthy and try something new. By trying something new, I actually made myself more brave and more outgoing when I had to face with the option to try something new or stay in my comfort zone. I think it has really changed my mindset because now I know that if I want to have new experiences I will always have access to it and I could if I tried.

Chloe: How did you manage to balance your CAS commitments with your academic responsibilities?

Gabrielle: Striking a balance between CAS commitments and academics was a priority for me. I organised my experiences to occur weekly during CCA time, allowing them to serve as refreshing breaks without encroaching on academic responsibilities. In instances where it happened to collide, I made a conscious decision to prioritise my academic work, ensuring that I maintained a balanced harmony between my CAS experiences and academic pursuits.


FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM YEAR 12: THE POWER OF ONE TO ONE SESSIONS Every week, Y12 (and Y13) tutors are given an opportunity during Tutor Time to speak to students on an individual level. These meetings allow our tutors to check in on their tutees, and get to know them on a personal level. Students have commented on how valuable these interactions have been because it makes them feel appreciated and cared for. Our tutors care for the wellbeing of every student in their group, and take this opportunity to emphasise the pastoral care we offer in Sixth Form. Similarly, the tutors have found these meetings to be very productive because it allows our students to talk about their academic and personal growth in a safe and non-judgemental way, which allow us to help students at an early stage should a problem arise. We care, and we want to help our Sixth Formers, so this is one of the many ways we ensure that our students feel special at NLCS Jeju.


FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM Yoonkyo Kang- Y12 MJE “In our 1:1 tutor meetings we are provided with the opportunity to speak about our academic progress and most importantly general well-being. It is a comfortable session where we feel a heart touching connection with our tutors.”

YEAR 13 Our Y13 students have been on study leave, and they have been busy with the mock exams. This is a great experience for them to practise for the IB exams later this year. Best of luck for the Mocks, you are almost there!

Wendy Lee- Y13DJE Wendy joined NLCS Jeju in Year 10, and she has been a force to be reckoned with ever since! Wendy has been an active memory of the Sixth Form, and she has demonstrated her talents in leading positions around the school, and she has maintained a brilliant work-life balance. Wendy - “Year 13 has been a tumultuous and rewarding experience so far -- I cannot believe that half of it has already passed. With the Mock Exams, I am finding myself in a better place than I was last year for the Annual Exams, as I employed a new study method of updating my resources from IB Year 1. Having the privilege of Study Leave has been extremely beneficial, in micromanaging my time even between morning and afternoon exams.


FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM Of course, a large part of Year 13 is preparing for the next step forward. From the beginning of the academic year up until a couple of weeks ago, I dedicated much of my time to university applications. As a student applying to universities in three countries; the US, the UK, and France, I had to stay on top of my schedule to meet my deadlines. Through all the steps, my UGC Ms. Boyoung Kim, and the European Languages Department Head, Ms. Laetitia Choi, and teachers were beyond helpful. I want to thank them for sacrificing their time to assist with my mock interviews and essays. As I am now awaiting more decisions to arrive, I am grateful for the supportive environment with all staff and friends.”

HOUSE NEWS E-SPORTS HOUSE COMPETITION Jooa (Lana) Lee (Y9), Minjun (Nick) Kim (Y8) and Yong Hyun (Lucas) Kim (Y8) have been pioneers in introducing the first ever ESports House Competition to the School. They have exhibited amazing student leadership and have worked hard to create a fun and inclusive experience for students. They have been working really hard to find the right formula to create an inclusive Esports House competition. This first ever House Esports competition will be based on Mario Kart. It is hoped to grow this eagerly anticipated student led House competition in the future. - Mr. Lim and Mr. Mckeogh

BOARDING NEWS WEEKEND ACTIVITIES Last weekend was fun packed for our boarding students as they left the campus for a day out. Year 5, 6 and 7 visited Vaunce Trampoline Park, Year 8 went to Park 981 and our Year 9 students had a trip to the cinema.

CULTURAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE

Welcome back from the Winter break! In this edition of our cultural highlights, the CAC will revisit some of the vibrant and culturally rich events that unfolded during our time away from school. We’re eager to share a bit about the origins and traditions of these events, and we hope that you’ll find as much joy in exploring them as we did writing about them!

Diwali Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a major Hindu festival that symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Celebrated over five days, it involves lighting diyas (oil lamps), setting fireworks, and decorating homes with rangoli designs (representing happiness). Similar to other Holiday traditions, the festival also includes family gatherings, special prayers, and the distribution of sweets and gifts.

Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday that serves as a celebration of life from the 26 December to 1 January. It is often considered a time for families and communities to come together to remember the past and to celebrate their culture. Created in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga, Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday, with ideas and concepts often expressed in the Swahili language, one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa. CULTURAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE January 16 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a holiday in the United States observed on the third Monday of January each year in celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr, who was chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law and civil society. Take the opportunity to learn more about the work of civil rights leaders globally here.

25 January - Burns night Celebrated in Scotland, Burns Night celebrates the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns. The celebrations are held on the poet’s birthday, 25 January with a reading of his poetry along with a traditional meal including Haggis and Whisky - learn more about Burns Night here.

ONLJ Profile Chaeyun Sophie Lee Class of 2014 Carnegie Mellon University - B.A Architecture Columbia University - MS Architecture and Urban Design What is your degree? & What led you to choose this particular subject? I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University before completing my Masters of Science in Architecture and Urban Design at Columbia University in May 2020. During my undergraduate program, I encountered design challenges that required me to focus on the importance of architectural elements articulating existing contexts, and how public spaces are designed. This led me naturally to gain interest in urban design. The architecture and urban design program at GSAPP was appealing to me as its design approach has an emphasis on advancing narratives which provided me with skills to better communicate, demonstrate and develop new strategies for urban changes, considering all aspects of human life. How was your university experience? College life as an architecture student was very interesting. During my undergraduate program, I had the opportunity to work and practically live with my studio friends, who came from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. With friends from the studio, I was able to involve myself in school-wide organizations and events such as the school fashion show, where I served as a designer. At both universities, I engaged in extensive travel, and the most fascinating studio trip was to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Each studio trip provided me with treasured memories of encountering unique environments and spaces, along with making lifelong friends. What are you currently engaged in? After briefly working as a product manager at a start-up, I returned to an architecture firm, specifically joining the urban design division. Our interdisciplinary team covers a whole range of projects, from urban planning to design and architecture, involving varying scales such as whole city masterplans and smaller-scale urban spatial projects. In the near future, I aspire to contribute to a project that addresses design problems related to climate change and water urbanism. Share some cherished memories from your time at NLCS Jeju. During my time at NLCS Jeju, I was deeply involved in school life and co-curricular activities. In my final two years of NLCS Jeju, I took on several leadership roles, such as serving as a member of the Big Six and the captain of the School netball team. As the first Big Six group, we focused on supporting students, teachers and staff throughout the process of building a new school community and were given the opportunity to organise and participate in fun team-building activities and events. Sport was also a very big part of my NLCS Jeju life, and I thoroughly enjoyed participating in all netball related events. The most memorable moment was when our team secured the second-place position in the national netball tournament! Through these roles, I developed interpersonal skills and gained qualities that enriched me both on a personal and professional level. I am happy and grateful to be part of the NLCS Jeju alumni network and hope to meet many more ONLJers over the next few years!


ADMISSIONS NEWS RECEPTION, YEAR 1 AND YEAR 2 Applications for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are open! Visit our website to apply. Due to the volume of applications received for these year groups the Admissions team will be in touch as soon as possible after you apply, please allow for up to 5 working days. Applications close 29 February. Should you have a younger child or friends with children who wish to join the School, please encourage them to apply. Reception Applicants will be invited to attend an assessment day on 22 March 2024 at NLCS Jeju. The assessment will include classroom activities and observations, as well as a friendly and fun test, which is interactive and age appropriate. Year 1 and Year 2 Applicants will join us on campus for an English test and maths test as well as classroom activities and observation on 20 April 2024. These two dates are one of the highlights of the Admissions calendar, every effort is made to ensure the young applicants feel relaxed and enjoy their experience. All the staff and students involved thoroughly enjoy the event! Decisions will be made within 3 weeks of the assessment. STAFF NEWS OLLE TRAIL RUN FOR CHARITY Always one for a challenge, over the next 6 months, Mr. Dorian Brown, is planning to run all 27 Olle trails (437km!!) on the island in order to raise money for Pieta House, an organisation that supports people dealing with mental health issues and suicide. STAFF AWARDS At NLCS Jeju we believe in life long learning and that has been modelled by four of our teachers who have found time on top of their busy schedules to complete courses that benefit the School.

Theory of Knowledge (Category 2) - International Baccalaureate The course develops expertise in delivering an IB programme - connecting the programme framework to the classroom practice, as well as in increasing understanding of assessment in IB programmes, discussing and analysing standards and practices. STAFF NEWS Boarding Qualification Mr. Adam Yates and Ms. Emily Spivey both successfully completed a Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) course. The BSA is the leading voice in education for boarding schools based in the UK and across the world. These are highly sought after and respected qualifications. Ms. Spivey’s Action Research Report was the ‘Importance of Communicating Wellbeing and Safeguarding Concerns Effectively Within the School’ and Mr. Yates’ was ‘How can staff wellbeing be defined, measured and acted upon in the context of an international boarding school.’
