CULTURES DONATIONS PODCASTS STUDENTS

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju It is always gratifying to get rewards and to be recognised for our achievements and so our world ranking as a top Global IB School is very pleasing and recognises the efforts and hard work as well as the abilities of our students and teachers supported by their families. This alone will not enable them to follow their dreams and go to the universities of their choices and so is testament to the holistic and exceptional education they receive at NLCS Jeju. For our current class of 2021 these are challenging times as they work towards their IB Diploma examinations in the summer and await offers from universities. As many of you will be aware, many students last year including many of our class of 2020 deferred their entry to university due to COVID-19 and so the numbers of places available particularly in the UK and the US are far less this year which makes it more challenging and is delaying the decision making process this year for our students. We wish them every success. In COVID-19 times, it can be all too easy for some to withdraw into themselves and to only think of their own self interests after spending so much of the last year in long periods of isolation. It is therefore really pleasing when I look at how our NLCS Jeju community have continued to maintain their commitment to their wider community and service. In today’s newsletter you will read about a variety of projects which students are involved in which are most commendable. Stay safe and well Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

WINTER CONCERT CULTURES Stories From Other Cultures

North London Collegiate School Jeju

As part of their studies in English, the children in Year Five have been learning about ‘Stories from other Cultures.’ Very kindly, teachers from across the Senior and Junior Schools volunteered to share traditional stories from their home countries with the students. This was a great learning experience and really helped bring this unit of work to life for the children. They heard tales from an exciting array of places, including Australia, England, Kenya, Ireland, Korea, Scotland, Poland, China and New Zealand! The Junior English department would like to thank our faculty colleagues for making this such a successful, enjoyable event for the children.

Donations

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Over the Christmas break we received acknowledgement from many charities who have benefited from the efforts and generosity of our students and staff. St Isidore’s Hospice, The Dongkwang Senior Welfare Centre, The Gotjawal Foundation and Hot Pink Dolphins all acknowledge our donations here with certificates.

Dear students of NLCS Jeju Junior School

It was a great pleasure and surprise to receive a donation from you, which is a manifestation of your interests in preserving the natural heritage of Jeju, particularly the “Gotjawal” terrain. Gotjawal is the name of a particular kind of forests that have been formed of volcanic lava. They are so special and rare worldwide and is quite properly likened to “lungs of Jeju Island”. The money raised through your “Mufti Day” event got the excellent destination. The whole staff at Gotjawal Trust of Jeju joins me in sending you the best wishes for your happiness and achievements as well as your health through this difficult time of Covid19 Pandemic. Thank you and good bye.

Kim, Kook-Joo Chairman The Gotjawal Trust of Jeju

SERVICE

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Alternative Service Bryant Angela Seo - Chair of Toweraid and her team have been working hard to make the Bryants meaningful and authentic in a world still affected by COVID-19. Here they explain their efforts Many of the students in our school lead or are in a service Bryant that interacts with the community. However, with the current COVID-19 situation, it has proven very difficult to continue with these Bryants for the past several terms. Therefore, we came up with several alternate Bryants for term 2 and possible longer as well.

School Environment and Development Our new Bryant ‘school environment and development’ works to resolve problems that have not been solved for a long time in our school. Firstly, we will be looking at the boards around school to back them up and to remove some of the old posters. Secondly, we will be working on the empty spaces inside school, such as the tower area, and try to decorate/make it so that students will be able to use it more effectively. Thirdly, we will be going around school doing litter clean up and even sometimes extending to the road in front of school. Lastly, we are aiming to fix all the broken lockers around school. It is our hope that this will still continue on after this crisis has ended.

Car Wash Peace Village Bryant team consists of students who are passionate about helping people with special needs and enhancing their welfare. We regularly visit ‘Peace Village’ located in Seogwipo and teach Peace Villagers English and Western culture. We always do our best to be enthusiastic and make every session memorable. Unfortunately, due to social distancing, we cannot visit them this term. Amongst many different ideas suggested by our team members of what we could do for Peace Villagers without meeting them in person, we decided to initiate a fundraising activity. We will do car washing every Bryant session after getting reservations in advance from the staff members of NLCS Jeju. We are planning to make donations to Peace Village and other charity organisations.

Under the current COVID-19 restrictions, Village is School Gueok-ri cannot continue for now because we cannot visit the village to meet the local children. Therefore, our team decided to do another activity that can be done at school in this term, which is the Recycling Project.Through recycling our team aims to increase awareness and understanding of waste sorting and improve the current system of rubbish bins to more effectively recycle and reduce waste. Our team hopes to bring positive changes to both Senior School and Junior School and we look forward to making steps towards an eco-friendly NLCS Jeju!

Donations of iMacs to Jenam Orphanage

North London Collegiate School Jeju

One of our service teams who work with Jenam Orphanage have made a very special donation to start the year. Most of the students in Jenam Orphanage were unable to have a full education because there were insufficient number of devices. They are especially going to be very useful for extended online lessons and research and homework. The Jenam Orphanage Bryant team came up with an idea of providing online tutor sessions with the Elementary and Middle School students in Jenam. This will allow us to continue volunteering during social distancing and restrictions. The first step was to provide Jenam with enough devices for them to join the online meetings. 20 iMacs in our school that are no longer being used were identified and earmarked for the orphanage. On January 23, the iMacs were delivered to the Jenam Orphanage, and the online tutoring session began on the next day, January 24. 12 members of the Jenam Service team will provide individual and detailed lessons to 16 Jenam children. There are no more than two per group, and we currently are helping students to prepare for the first semester. The subjects include Maths and English. Service Coordinator, Mr. GwangHo Im says - “We are living in such an uncertain time, and online lessons are now an essential part of education. Students might be asked to continue distance learning at any time. I hope that this small donation will reduce the marginalization of children in education. It’s especially important to us to help children living in our Jeju community.”

PODCASTS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Introducing a new media star in our community. We love what Shona has done - and we invite you all to listen to her podcast! “Hello, my name is Shona Hyun Park and I am a Year 10 student who has made an NLCS HUB Podcast. The podcast is named “Spatium” which conveys the meaning of a thinking space where everyone can share everything no matter where they are. It is an international podcast where there are a lot of interactions outside South Korea. For my very first podcast which launched on 27 January, I have interviewed three people from Germany, Japan, and America under the topic of How did the pandemic shape the lives of High School students. For my next episode, I am planning on interviewing some NLCS Jeju alumni currently attending schools in Ameria, England, and so on, to seek some advice on High School life and more! Spatium is the idea of not being limited to place and time while still being able to interact with others. I wanted to create this space where everyone was able to share their ideas and thoughts without hesitation and this is also where I came up with the name Spatium. I hope this podcast will brighten people’s day and play its role in making NLCS HUB broader.” Listen HERE

OPTION INFORMATION SESSIONS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

On Friday Jan 22 we ran the Year 9 Options Session where students heard all about how to pick their subjects for the future. Assistant Vice Principal - Ms. Claire Easter explained how and why to select each subject. It is really important to take advice, to read up on what each subject really entails and to talk to your teachers and parents. Choose what you are passionate about (not what you think you should do!) Students also learned about the core subjects which are mandatory and form the base of a successful IGCSE education. Today, Jan 29 was the turn of Year 11 students. They heard what to think about when choosing the crucial 6 subjects (3 Standard Level and 3 Higher Level) which make up the IBDP.
