CHEMISTRY

North London Collegiate School Jeju

To coincide with Chemistry in Action Week we focus on Chemistry - one of the most popular subjects amongst our students at all ages. We’ve talked to teachers and students about Chemistry at NLCS Jeju. We also share events from this week and a wonderful Junior Science class where some of our youngest students explore some chemical reactions under the tutelage of Mr John Gilbertson and Science Tech, Ms Erin Scott.

TEACHERS Mr Lynden Astill - Head of Chemistry Mr Lynden Astill is our Head of Chemistry. He has a rich history involving an early career in the Marines in his native UK followed by his 888 Days Around The World where he discovered over 70 countries and developed his international ambitions and spirit. He retrained as a teacher at the age of 30 - teaching Chemistry and Oudoor Learning another of his great passions.

Mr Lynden Astill Head of Chemistry

Mr Astill has worked in schools in Singapore and Vietnam and has also worked at an Outdoor Learning centre in India - preparing him for his life here in Korea. He loves the beauty of Jeju and the fantastic reputation of NLCS Jeju. “Our students are polite and diligent. They are so eager to learn. I really love their unique sense of humour and their natural interest in Chemistry!” He explains that Chemistry is the “middle science” able to influence and support the others. Studying Chemistry can help support a huge number of university courses and careers. “Also Chemistry is great fun! Study Chemistry because it’s a great subject. It’s fun. It’s a multi sensory subject filled with sounds, sights and smells! I am in awe of the chemical processes and the astonishing nature of both Chemistry and Science in general.” Mr Astill is a regular contributor to the Chemistry Review and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. As he says - “It’s incredible what we know and incredible what we don’t know.”

Mr Derek Paternaude Mr Derek Paternaude has had a lifelong love of science. He initially considered Geology as a university subject and career path but turned away from the mining aspect and onto Organic Chemistry. “ I love its logic and its creativity. It’s about building things and I think that’s the real appeal for children!” We are very lucky to have in Mr Paternaude, a real understanding of learning Science in a second language. Brought up in Montreal in Canada he was taught Science in school in dual language - one year in English, the next in French! This gives him a unique perspective as most of our students are learning in English but native speakers of Korean. He explored this in his Masters at the University of British Columbia where his paper was entitled “ Developing a Science Curriculum for Second Language Learners.” Like all our Science teachers, he describes our students as “ a joy to teach. They are lovely they are sharp. They are so engaged in what they are doing.Their level of English is incredible and it gives them such easy access to everything. Their accomplishments are outstanding.” Mr Paternaude advises • • • • •

Dr Paul Anada Raj Poovindran

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Paul Raj left his native Malaysia to join NLCS Jeju last August and is already proving a very popular Chemistry teacher! Before entering teaching he was a neuroscientist focused on brain trauma and Alzheimers. He spent 7 years engaged in this field, conducting important research before deciding to move into teaching. “I wanted to share my own knowledge - and it was important to me to share with younger minds not just with university students who have already formed all their opinions! “ He was attracted to NLCS Jeju for the School’s ethos and the way we “go beyond the curriculum.” He says “we have students who are thinkers. They are enquirers and they are thirsty for knowledge. They are a pleasure to teach. And I learn from them, too. I feel I can really explore science alongside them. Each level I teach is totally unique. Years 9 - 11 are at a very critical time. They need to be challenged and stimulated - not just trained to pass exams! And when they move on to the amazing platform which is the IB they really get to think. They think about thinking! “ “I love Jeju - walking on the beaches and in the forests among nature makes me very happy. I am very lucky to be here - and very happy to be in the Chemistry department. We are a team - we collaborate and we share plans and ideas.” To find out more about our Chemistry teachers pop along and have a chat with them. Ask them about Chemistry In Action Week and about how and why they love to teach!

STUDENTS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

We talked to some of our students who are passionate about Chemistry. We asked them why they love it so much and where they want it to take them in life!

Joona Kim - Year 10 Chemistry is my favourite subject. In Year 9, I didn’t love Chemistry as it felt too hard to understand and learn. This year, everything clicked and now I find it really fun to see the equations fitting in with the experiment and the compounds forming when we just put them in together! I think I started to like Chemistry when we started some calculations and balance equations. Actually solving them and doing the practicals are way more interesting (as we get the answers and we can actually compare them with the actual practical) than just learning the basic theories when we start learning the subject for the first time. It feels real! Also, I really like comparing the theoretical yield and the actual yield. It’s fun to see the experiment being proven with some scientific calculations. Chemistry can be the basis of all science subjects as everything is made up of particles and it can explain the whole thing going on around us… As I’m in Year 10 and study IGCSE Chemistry, it requires us to be alert all the time because as it gets harder, it becomes more possible to forget the equations and the formulas. It’s practical which is fun!

North London North London Collegiate Collegiate School School Jeju Jeju

I think teamwork is really important in chemistry. We can of course study by ourselves when we are learning about theories and strategies, but when we are doing experiments during the lessons, it is always good to have a team with good teamwork so that I can go through them together, making sure for each other, and especially, cleaning up the mess together! When we do it together by dividing up the work, it is way easier to process our experiments! I am really excited about Chemistry Week and I look forward to the different events and activities - especially the experiments and to learn more fun facts

Terry Kim - Year 10

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Terry Kim came to us after a year in a school in Sussex in the UK. On his return he wanted to follow in his cousin’s footsteps and study at NLCS Jeju. He tells us “ I first had a love of Chemistry in my UK school. Then once I was here it developed under the great teachers here. Mr Bharat Joghi helped and inspired me and Mr Paternaude is a brilliant teacher now. Chemistry feels like a really pure science. I love that the PeriodicTable is the basis of everything. I’m enjoying my IGCSE work and am already looking forward to choosing Chemistry as one of my IB options. I would like to consider being a Lab Scientist or a Professor of Chemistry one day. I want to share that the answer to all the world’s questions can be found in nature.” Terry’s best piece of advice from his Chemistry teacher, Mr Paternaude is “ You have to understand, not memorize.”

Terry Kim

Philip Kim - Year 11

NorthLondon London North Collegiate School Collegiate School Jeju Jeju

“When I first came to this school, ironically, Chemistry was one of my least favourite subjects. It was difficult for me to wrap my head around the fact that I had to study about things I could not see nor touch. Since Year 9, however, the subject that seemed most removed from me suddenly became my favourite subject. The biggest reason why I became so passionate about studying Chemistry is very simple. It is fun: burning, bursting, and so much more. While other subjects heavily rely on learning through reading books, Chemistry is enthralling in that I can explore through experimenting and visualize what is happening in the very smallest unit in the universe.

Philip Kim

Philip Kim - Year 11

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Besides that, I have begun to grasp that chemistry is related to many other subjects that I am also interested in studying. As a student who is planning to choose Biology and Chemistry as HL subjects, I see that Chemistry is at the very basics of Biology. It is also very satisfying to discover bridges that link between the two seemingly very different areas of science. These are the major reasons why I am so passionate about studying chemistry. But there are many more! “

Chemistry at IBDP Kyle Choi - Year 13

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Kyle Choi is in Year 13 at NLCS Jeju and is taking Chemistry at HL. Here he explains how chemistry has enriched his lifeThrough its rigorous curriculum, IBDP Chemistry allows students to garner sophisticated theoretical chemistry knowledge. The individual topics comprising the syllabus of chemistry in IBDP are closely intertwined with each other. Looking at how each topic is in close relationship with others, students may be fascinated by chemistry as a subject matter and cherish the true joy of learning chemistry.

Kyle Choi

OPEN HOUSES

North London Collegiate School Jeju

With NLCS Jeju’s learning environment that values and prioritizes practical knowledge, students may participate in the extensive experimental sessions through the Chemistry IBDP curriculum. With my experience of growth and learning, I can safely say that students may easily link their study to the real world at the end of the course. Aspects of IBDP Chemistry can also be applied to Physics and Biology, which in turn empowers students taking Chemistry and other science subjects in IBDP to already have an edge. In the same context, the course further provides a considerable benefit to the students considering continuing their careers in medicine, biological sciences, environmental sciences, or any other science-related fields. With these beneficial aspects of Chemistry, I strongly recommend future IBDP students consider Chemistry not merely a recommended option but rather a ‘must choose’ option.

Sekyoung Hwang Year 12 - Chemistry Society Co-Chairs with Cindy Ku and Rosie Baek

Sekyoung Hwang, Year 12, explains her passion for Chemistry. She loves it so much she is driving the Chemistry Society forward this year.! Currently, I’m taking Chemistry HL. Knowledge required for IB Chemistry is mostly based on IGCSE Chemistry but it requires much deeper knowledge as well as practical and investigational skills. In the process of gaining knowledge and skills in IB Chemistry, students are required to communicate and work collaboratively with others. During the first halfyear I have been able to develop an understanding of knowledge in Chemistry within a global context. Also, I was able to develop experimental and investigative skills as well as finding limitations and possible improvements of current scientific technologies. My favourite module is Organic Chemistry. It’s fascinating, but at the same time, it is also a challenging topic that requires lots of time and effort. It plays an important role in our daily lives and I personally think organic chemistry is the base of chemistry and our lives so I found it interesting when the knowledge of organic compounds is actually applied to our daily lives.

North London Collegiate School Jeju

ChemSoc is composed of many intelligent young Chemists. During the meeting, we discuss and plan the experiments that we want to do, and research some hidden interesting facts about Chemistry. We publish weekly ‘Did you Know? ‘ articles which tell about Chemistryrelated fun facts in our daily lives. Through writing and publishing these articles, our members were able to approach chemistry more easily. Chemsoc helps students to have a better understanding of Chemistry and provides various opportunities to step forward as a chemist in our school. During the Chemistry Action Week, Chemsoc prepared four different lunchtime activities including slime making experiments. The activities were very simple and interesting, so they were appealing to a wide variety of year groups.

Junior School Chemistry

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Junior School Science Teacher, Mr John Gilbertson invited us to visit one of his Year 3 Science classes. They did a rock composition lab, in which one of the tests was to see if the rock is ‘reactive’ to acids. Limestone is ‘basic’ and the students were surprised that a rock could fizz. This is a real, hands-on investigation of the natural world and a genuine examination using Chemistry to understand the natural world.

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Students in the class were incredibly engaged and enthusiastic about the work. Celina told us “Science is fun and we learn and investigate and find out surprising things.” Scarlett added “This lesson is so interesting and surprising! David says “We guess and we find out whether or not we were right. It’s fun!” Afterwards three of the students shared their written work. Thank you -

Luis Torquato One of the features of this week has been guest speaker, Mr Luis Torquato who has participated in several live sessions - despite the time difference between London, UK and Korea! Mr Torquato is an ex student of Mr Astill - from the UK. He advised a small group of students on studying at Oxford University where he gained his MChem before moving onto Imperial where he is studying for his PhD. He eventually hopes to be able to improve the formulations of soaps, detergents and cleaning solutions. In his two keynote lectures he shared undergraduate Chemistry topics encouraging students to use the knowledge that they already have in the sciences to understand complex processes in the world. As a school we are incredibly lucky to have the input of such outside speakers. We are able to add a whole new level to our academic enrichment programmes. Thank you to all our teachers who find such interesting speakers for us.

Online Science Day

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Four Year 12 students were awarded with an Excellent Content at the SW.IT Content Competition held on 2020 Online Science Day! Juyeon Ma, Yeobin Amy Han, Ez Kim, and Hyun Joo Annette Cho produced a kit named “Room of Truth” with which you can make a lie detector on your own. “In Year 11, we took the computer science class together and got interested in related subjects. At the class, we learned proxy servers. That is the reason we participated in the competition and named the team Proxy.” “We discussed a variety of topics, but as Covid 19 made it online, not face-to-face events, a much simpler topic was needed to increase people’s participation. So we decided to make a kit that you can make on your own with the provided parts. It is not necessary to meet in person for this project.” You can actually watch the project of the Proxy team HERE. During the event, people could ask for a kit if they got interested in it after watching the video and get a chance to make a lie detector designed by the Proxy team. “With only a few days left before the deadline, we received the parts we requested to the event organizer, but they were not compatible, which was very frustrating. We even had to spend our own money to buy the parts. There were many difficulties like this during the two-month long preparation, but what we gained is much more. In fact, participating in the event, I was able to fully experience that software was used in a variety of ways in real life, which is a totally different experience from what I studied through theory in computer science. If I can get another opportunity, I would like to participate again.” They advised younger students who want to participate in the same event next year to choose a topic that is not difficult but interesting. “It doesn’t have to be complicated, so find a topic that attracts you and many people!”

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Genius Magazine - Junior School There are a lot of school publications where you can get a glimpse of our students’ outstanding ideas. Student journalists and writers are spending a lot of time and effort on them, and GENIUS is one of those brilliant publications - with a difference! This one isn’t the work of our older students but the younger ones, still in Junior School. The new issue of GENIUS, a J science and history magazine published termly, is filled with such varied subjects as Frida Kahlo, the history of Hangeul, Genetic Engineering and Elephant Toothpaste.

Chief Editor Hyeyeon Angela Seo (Y12) and designers Heeseo Ginger Kim (Y12), and Sunwoo Layla Bu (Y12) talked about their experiences working with Junior School students. They joined the Genius Magazine team last year at the recommendation of their Seniors. Angela and other editors spend their CCA time once a week to support Junior School students to write their piece from beginning to the end. Angela, one of our Big Eight, says that working with younger students is very different from working with Senior School students. “The most difficult and important thing is to get to know each other. Some students don’t want to share their writing with us, so I think it’s important to build a relationship and gain trust first. Also, younger students need a lot of help from time to time because they have not written as much yet. Coming up with a new topic which has not been written before is another difficulty.

Despite these struggles, you can feel a strong sense of accomplishment with a sense of relief after completing one issue! Another advantage is that you can get a chance to get close to Junior students.Younger students who worked with me last year joined the Senior School in Year 7, and I'm so glad that they contact me and come to see me often." The design team's work begins when students upload the completed text with the images they choose to a shared folder. The images students want to use and the images suitable for editing are often different, so the designers also make great efforts to improve the quality of the magazine from image searching to adding additional design elements. Ginger and Layla, also the designers of Senior School Magazine Islander, said that they get very different joy when editing GENIUS compared with Islander. "There's a lot of writing about fun topics like unicorns and slime, so you need a different approach from other Senior Magazines. The overall design also includes more playful elements. Of course, there are some students who surprise us with their writings on very complicated topics!" Ginger said that our School magazines are one of the reasons she decided to join NLCS Jeju. When she was comparing NLCS Jeju with other schools, she received and read the Islander and dreamed of participating in the project like that. She actually became an important part of the Islander team and later joined the GENIUS team as well! To Junior School students who want to work with this amazing Genius team, Angela advised, "If you are interested in science and history, it is a great opportunity to find more about your favourite field, so I hope you participate with a sincere attitude." The design team also said, "We are ready for every topic, so we want you to be able to expand your talents here." If you're thinking about next term’s CCA, throw your hat into the ring! You can read the Latest issue through this link.

Minseo Cha - Ecuador Embassy Minseo Cha in Year 12 tells us about a wonderful opportunity that she had to put her studies into practice “I had an opportunity to work as an intern at the Embassy of Ecuador in Korea over the winter holidays. I mainly worked with the Commerce Director at the Embassy. My task was to do a market analysis on six types of food products Ecuador is currently exporting or planning to export to South Korea and write a report for each of them regarding its prospect in the Korean market and suggestions on export strategies. Although the task initially sounded daunting, I found it very enjoyable to apply the knowledge I learned in my Economics and Global Politics lessons in real life! It was also meaningful to get to know what embassies and commerce departments do.” If you’ve had experiences that you’d love to share with others please contact marketing@nlcsjeju.kr

ALUMNI STORY

North London Collegiate School Jeju

In our Alumni Story series we hear this week from Andrew Han, Class of 2015. He tells us how he has spent the years since he graduated from NLCS Jeju and became an ONLJer! Andrew has already given back to NLCS Jeju by participating in our Gap and Graduate Student Programme. He has also completed his compulsory Military Service. “Currently I am a student at Ringling College of Art and Design. I entered the school with a Computer animation major but changed my major into Illustration during sophomore year. During the first year of school I was excited to learn how to create characters, concepts, and stories for my animation career but it turns out that animators exist as technicians rather than artists. So during military service and a year of time that I spent as a Gap student in NLCS Jeju, I decided to change my major into illustration. Being an illustration major helped me to express my thoughts into visual content. Learning diverse traditional materials, and digital materials made me confident in illustrating my concept and characters in different visual explanations. In future, I would like to be an art educator and I believe this major would help students to learn basic skills in arts.

Andrew Han’s Illustration

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Andrew Han As an art student you are surrounded by art. Everybody draws all day without thinking about any other subjects! Everywhere - cafeteria, gym, library, road, and on the grass. You can also see different people’s styles and thoughts and this inspires you as an artist. Also it is easy to find people drawing like a zombie in their lab or room to finish their assignments!! For art students in art college, don’t expect to sleep 7 hours per day. 3 hours would be enough. That is a typical art student in art college. My first goal is to graduate Ringling College of Art and Design as soon as possible, then get a certificate in international teaching in England. Then I would like to be an art teacher in international schools teaching students how to express their thoughts and knowledge with visual context in different styles. International schools have a diverse culture to inspire me as an artist and it would have a better opportunity for students to illustrate their future in different perspectives. I want to help them to complete their goals with a proper personality and skills. Key memories from NLCS jeju are House competitions and staff. In South Korea as far as my research, NLCS Jeju is the only school that has a House competition system that makes students excited and feels like they belong at home. Students will never know until they graduate what memorable things they have during their teenage lives. The one thing that I regret during my life in NLCS Jeju was that I didn’t spend enough time in Sarah. As a Gap Assistant, I felt the energy, excitement, and emotions. It is the one of the most positive memories that I have for this school. So participate inHouse as much as possible and don’t live to regret it! Another memorable thing for me was the staff around the school. I strongly believe that students will never agree with my opinion but most of the alumni agree that the NLCS Jeju cafeteria was awesome. You guys should thank all the staff in the cafeteria, cleaning people, people who do laundry, and nurses in the medical centre. These people don’t exist in college; so as being one of your alumni, my request for all students is to be polite to them. They are angels.
