SPORTS SPECIAL MEET THE TEACHERS STUDENTS AWARDS

2

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju Sports are an integral part of North London Collegiate School Jeju, being part of the Physical Education core curriculum, IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme. We also offer opportunities for elite and recreational sports as part of the CCA and Bryant programme. We want to ensure that our students lead healthy lifestyles as this contributes greatly to their wellbeing and academic success. There is much educational research across the world today which clearly shows the benefits of sports for academic achievement. Those students who are engaged in sports and participate regularly in physical activity and co-curricular programmes have been shown to outperform their peers and as in the case of US studies to have higher GPA scores. World wide, studies have consistently demonstrated that physically active people are not only healthier but also perform better on tests of cerebral or intellectual ability. Some studies even indicate that the results can be expedient; even a quick 5-minute walk can yield immediate results. Most studies show that the more exercise students get, the more proficient their mental faculties and cerebral performance can become. This makes it clear that, as well as for environmental reasons, our students who live in the GEC should not be driven to school but walk or cycle! As we all come together next week with all our students back on our campus and as Spring approaches I hope that our day students will bear this in mind to avoid the traffic queues coming to school in the morning. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

This week we focus on Sports! Sports have long been an integral part of life at NLCS Jeju. From elite national and international competitions to a fun Sunday morning football game for our boarders - there is something for everyone! We encourage every student to find a sport they love with a passion and something they will commit to throughout their School lives. We also encourage everyone to experiment and to try out new sports. It may be the one for you! Join us in this week’s newsletter as we talk to our new Director of Sport - Mr. Glenn Roberts and some of his team. We hear about what is available, when and where. We also look at CCA and Bryant sport and hear from our Sports Council. If you have any questions about sports please contact Director of Sport - groberts@nlcsjeju.kr Sports Council - sportscouncil@nlcsjeju.kr

SPORT AT NLCS JEJU

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Sport and co-curricular activities form an integral part of life here at NLCS Jeju and is also one of the three pillars of the NLCS ethos. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in many sporting opportunities during after school CCA clubs or on a Saturday morning in Bryant activities. These opportunities can be for purely recreational and participation with activities such as mountain biking, cross country, rackets or fitness, or at a more competitive level, students can join a squad that prepares a representative team to compete in school matches and competitions such as KISAC. NLCS has many squads for students to be involved in; Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Badminton, Tennis, Soccer, Cross Country, Athletics - all of which are available to High School and Middle School boys and girls. As NLCS follows a British curriculum; we also run a HS and MS Boys Rugby squad. Both these teams are very popular and these groups of boys have the opportunity to test themselves against Korean and International schools.

SPORT ON THE CURRICULUM

North London Collegiate School Jeju

We value Sports highly at NLCS Jeju. Each student has a weekly PE or Sport lesson from Reception through to Year 11. In JS, students also have a weekly Swimming lesson as it’s a valuable life skill and one all our students should have. In JS the PE curriculum provides students with fundamental skills • • • • • •

Running Jumping Catching Throwing Gameplay Basic Rules and Principles of team sports

In Year 7-9 the focus is on team sports such as Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Rugby. They also continue Swimming on rotation and take part in Athletics. We then introduce fitness and stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle. In Years 10-11 there is the option to do IGCSE PE (as well as the core PE lesson) for students who are practically able and interested in the theory aspect. Finally - at IB, students may choose the Sports Science option where they study the Anatomy and Exercise Physiology of Sporting movement. This science based course is taught by two of the department’s most experienced teachers; Mr. Daniel Long and Mr. Stuart Brown.

SPORTS CCA

North London Collegiate School Jeju

For students who have learned to love Sports on the curriculum there is ample opportunity to take it further. During CCA and Bryant Mr. Roberts and his team have worked with Mr. Douglas Machin and his team to create a programme which is second to none! Some sports and games offered are • • • • • • • • • •

These CCAs develop students to a higher level and offer the opportunity to represent the School in national and international competitions such as KISAC and FOBISIA.

MEET THE TEACHERS

Director of Sport - Mr. Glenn Roberts

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Director of Sport Mr. Glenn Roberts

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Mr. Roberts joined us in August 2020 and has already made a big impact on the department. He tells us what led him to Korea and NLCS Jeju “I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a Bachelor of Education degree in PE. I have taught for twenty years in two Independent Schools in the North of England as Head of PE and Head of Sport respectively. Before starting a teaching career, I played as a Professional Cricketer for Derbyshire County Cricket Club for four seasons and also spent time playing and coaching cricket in Brisbane, Australia and Cape Town, South Africa. During my teaching career, I have led a number of overseas sports tours and ski trips and am also qualified as a cricket coach and umpire, a rugby and football referee and coach and a ski instructor. After my first term at NLCS Jeju I have been very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the students to play sports and also with the amazing range of opportunities they have. I am very much looking forward to when we can start fixtures and competitions again and providing the students with the opportunity to represent the school at sport locally, on the mainland and internationally.” Talk to Mr. Roberts with ideas about any sport. Volunteer to play or to teach or mentor. There are opportunities for everyone!

MEET THE TEACHERS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Head of Senior PE - Mr. Gaspar Villanueva “I was born and raised in Madrid, Spain where I studied Sport Science to gain a Masters degree. While at University I competed in Triathlon and started swim coaching, developing athletes to European Championship level. After finishing my studies I moved to Canada to develop my outdoor training and adventure skills, where I became a Ski and Snowboard instructor and a hiking guide. Since then I have been teaching in international schools in China, the UAE, Switzerland and now in Korea. In 2014 I took a sabbatical to cycle from Beijing to Madrid, covering over 11,000 km across Asia and Europe. However, my true value goes beyond my subject experience and extends to my passion in empowering young people to push their personal, academic and physical boundaries to reach their true potential. It is my belief that through sport and physical activity young people have the chance to not only develop themselves mentally and physically, but also to develop a love for learning and so continue to grow throughout their lives. In my free time I like to cycle around Jeju and enjoy the beautiful, natural scenery. I also enjoy cooking new recipes.”

MEET THE TEACHERS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Head of Junior PE and Sport - Mr. Dien Wooler

“I am in my 6th year at NLCS Jeju and I am responsible for the delivery of Junior PE and Swimming. I am passionate about providing sporting opportunities for all and firmly believe that there is a sport out there that everyone can excel in. My aim for Junior PE is that all children move into the Senior School with the confidence, competence and motivation to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through physical activities. To achieve this, there are wide-ranging activities in the PE curriculum for children to discover their hidden talents such as Tchoukball, Boccia and Goalball. My love of sports can be traced back to 1980 when I first got selected for the School Football team! I clearly remember the day I first saw my name appear on the team sheet on the noticeboard! In Senior School I discovered a talent for athletics and joined my local club specialising in Long and Triple Jump. I competed at national level for Triple Jump.

Head of Junior PE and Sport Mr. Dien Wooler

North London Collegiate School Jeju

I joined the British Military when I was 17. During 25 years in the military I continued to excel in athletics, representing the UK Armed Forces and I also played Rugby and Hockey. I reached the rank of Major and served in Former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Falklands. I spent 4 years teaching the Oman military all aspects of leadership and it was this that led me to undertake a MA in Leadership and Management in 2012 with the University of Exeter. I then qualified as a teacher in 2013. During my time in the military, the one quality that has been most valuable to me in my teaching career is interpersonality; I pride myself in getting to know all our students and what their interests and hobbies are. I love teaching PE to such enthusiastic pupils at NLCS Jeju. Some highlights have been training and preparing students for four FOBISIA Games as well as numerous Songdo Football Tournaments.”

SUPPORT

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Like many departments, Sport is very fortunate to benefit from the expertise of our many support staff here at NLCS Jeju and facilities are kept in excellent working order by the CNS maintenance team. Our Sports Manager, Ms. S J (Jennie) Kwon is integral to the smooth operation of the PE and Sports at NLCS. Jennie has worked at the school for over nine years and has established a very strong relationship with all members of the community. Over the years she has provided invaluable support when organising overseas sports tours and has been involved in many rugby tours to the mainland, China, Malaysia and Southern Africa. Her excellent knowledge of the sport scene on Jeju has led to her being invited on the Seogwipo District Sports Committee three years ago to advise and assist with sports development in our region. This accolade is testament to the quality of the support staff we have here in School.

SPORTS COUNCIL

North London Collegiate School Jeju

We are very proud to have an active Sports Council at NLCS Jeju. Led by Year 12 students Alex Chung and Nick Oh the focus is on several individual areas. Sports Marketing - newsletter, social media and posters Sports Mentoring - Students in Year 10 and 11 have the opportunity to sign up for a CCA that allows them to get involved with sports to develop their coaching and leadership skills. Female Participation and Welfare - This is an initiative to encourage more girls to choose sport as a CCA and represent the school and be part of the squads.

SPORTS AMBASSADOR Nick Oh - A Message From the Sports Ambassador Sports have always been an integral part of my life, helping me realise what it is to live in a community. The various incidents that only take place while playing sports, I feel, have not only taught me the importance of possessing certain character traits but also when to take advantage of those different character traits. Hence, when I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to represent and help improve what’s already a part of my life in our school, I could not resist applying for the role. Aware of the positive influence one can benefit from sports, I sincerely hope that as many students can benefit from our school’s sporting opportunities. The Sports Ambassador’s formally depicted role is rather ambiguous - “To be a role model within the Sports scene, and to help the Sports Department implement initiatives.” The very nature of the description of the role, provides the Sports Ambassador with a lot of freedom but also a lot of responsibility. I believe this was why the Sports Ambassadors, throughout our school history, were unique in their own ways when it came to serving and improving our NLCS Sports community. I personally view the role of the Sports Ambassador, as being the primary link between the students and our community. I feel that students may find that they do not want to, or may not bother to bring up sports issues they experience directly to staff members. However, as a student myself, I hope that I can be an friendly figure so that other students will feel that it is much easier to approach me with sports suggestions - even if they are the tiniest of issues (every single one of them matters).

Nick Oh - A Message From the Sports Ambassador I envision a sports environment where the students of our school are naturally encouraged to embrace challenges and take risks. I believe that the first step that should be taken to transform my vision into reality is to form a more friendly and approachable Sports environment. I wish to do whatever it takes to achieve that. It is truly a joy that I am able to take part in bringing a positive influence to our sports community.

Alex Chung - Sports Council for a Thriving School Alex Chung is leader and co-founder of our Sports Council. He is passionate about Sports and hopes to help create an atmosphere in School where sports are celebrated and promoted and loved by each and every member of the community. He tells us “As a founder of the Sports Council, I aspired to widen the NLCS Sports Community, making it more approachable and energetic and open even to the local communities. As a big lover of sports, starting my new life in this school in Year 9 was harsh because sports were rated under academics or arts or even music. Boarders would stay in their houses during breakouts and day students would study at home. The biggest ambition I had was to have 15~20 people playing sports in the sports hall or on the field during breakouts. This was my main motivation in creating the Sports Council. I thought sharing sports news, taking pictures and videos of athletes in school and posting to different social media platforms would gather more students to play more. This has turned out to be successful as more than 30 people every day are playing basketball or rugby on the field or court. Perseverance and endurance are the two things that I’ve learned playing sports before I came to this school. At the age of 3, my first step to the world of sports kicked off which became something that I can’t live without. I had the chance to learn Taekwondo, traditional Korean martial arts, from the best coach living. Every day after school, I would run to the arena and practice for 6~8 hours. This regulated lifestyle was laborious and I was eager to quit! What kept me to reconsider my dream of becoming an athlete was the constant taste of defeat in competing in tournaments and championships. Years of practice couldn’t help me achieve a gold medal from hundreds and thousands of competitions which eventually led me to discuss with my coach on behalf of giving up. Without any doubt, I can easily say that my coach was the key in my life of sports. He knew me better than anyone else and said “Giving up means defeating yourself.”

This became my motivation both in life and sports. He knew that I was competitive. He developed my potential, and after years of defeat, at the age of 11, I won my first gold medal. Because sports taught me who I am and what I’m capable of, now I can’t stop loving it! Above all I gained perseverance and endurance. I am very proud that the Sports Council now consists of more than 30 members from Year 7 to 13 and they’re divided into five different teams • • • • •

Newsletter Media Marketing Sports Mentoring and Women’s Sports and Wellbeing

The Newsletter team produces a newsletter on behalf of internal and external news on any sports which are sent to the whole school every Wednesday, the Media team takes videos and pictures of ardent athletes in school, the Marketing team works with Ms. Forster to broaden the devotion in sports. One of the newly-formed branches Sports Mentoring focuses on expanding the personal abilities of young athletes in NLCS Jeju and the other focuses on the female athlete’s participation and wellbeing in the school. In Sports Mentoring, considering leadership as one of the priorities, we gave opportunities for students from year 10 to 13 to become mentors and lead each squad teams beside coaches. We are providing a programme in Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Rugby, Badminton and many other sports in order to draw out our young hopefuls’ strengths and improve their weaknesses. Our primary goal in mentoring is to make the mentees not only a good teammate but also to make them good leaders and show that unity is strength. To all the former members and the current members of the Sports Council, I am truly thankful for them trusting my lead. I still feel blessed to have the Council as a student led organisation supporting students who are academically and athletically outstanding.

Sunny Choi - Women’s Sports and Wellbeing I love Sports so much because it’s my comfort place. Having started IBDP, I felt like every week and every day was a challenge for me and I had to keep myself on my toes to stay alert. Under a significant amount of pressure, I had to let this stress out somewhere. In these times, playing sports has helped me a lot to unload the weight. Before I even realised it, I was looking forward to CCA and bryant sessions to play sports. When playing basketball or netball, I stop thinking about the upcoming tests or homework that I tend to worry about. Somehow, the concentration during sports gives my head a huge break from academic life. Also, I feel good when my body is tired!

North London Collegiate School Jeju

There are huge numbers of people who love playing sports as much as myself, and I really like how mental connections between athletes are formed while playing the same sports together. I joined NLCS Jeju in Year 3, but Year 7 was when I started to play sports seriously. I joined the netball and the basketball team simply because the older students playing basketball and netball seemed cool! They were running around and passing the balls like real athletes. So, I joined the squad. However, I realised my genuine interest in sports and I continued to play basketball and netball until now, in Year 12. I have tried various sports such as badminton, swimming, football, and much more. However, basketball and netball were the sports that I liked the most and that I could play well in. As a member of the girls basketball team for 5 years, we have entered KISAC multiple times and won first place twice.

North London Collegiate School Jeju netball tournament,

As a member of the girls netball team, we have entered ACAMIS which is an international sports competition for Asian international schools. And currently, I am the head of Women’s Sports and Wellbeing, as I want the female athletes to enjoy sports more and receive as much opportunity as possible to play sports. Firstly, Women’s Sports and Wellbeing involves the participation of female students in sports in NLCS Jeju. It is an inevitable fact that there are more male than female athletes in NLCS Jeju. Even though many of them are interested in playing sports, the younger students are generally shy or even scared to go to a tryout for one of the squads. So we encourage those younger female athletes to actively participate in the trials and realise that they are very welcome to join the squads. Secondly, our group helps female athletes in NLCS Jeju to feel as safe as possible. Our group makes NLCS Jeju a home for all players and helps with any problems that arise in the process. As one of the few students who started playing sports when I was very young, I would like to tell the Year 7, 8, 9 students to go for the challenge. I know how you feel about joining the team that has many older students. It is natural that you feel a little intimidated and nervous. However, taking that risk to join the team is completely worth it. You can have a strong bond between the team members and you know that they will always have your back and you’ll work it out together. Do not worry that you are young because age is not important when playing sports. If you have passion, dive into it and take that risk.

Mulchat HM, Ms. Gemma Stevens

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Sports teacher and Mulchat HM, Ms. Gemma Stevens adds her agreement to Sunny’s points At NLCS Jeju, we believe it’s incredibly important for girls to get involved in sports and exercise, because of the essential sociological and physiological benefits that they have to offer. Through PE lessons, CCAs, Bryants, House Competitions, Fixtures and Tournaments, our girls are able to learn important life skills that they can use beyond any field, track, pitch or court. Participation in sport enhances the ability to develop teamwork, collaboration, and the opportunity to successfully communicate to friends and peers. We encourage the girls to demonstrate leadership and decision making skills, and learn how to deal with success as well as failure, and at the core of this, we want them to have the knowledge that participation in physical activity and sports, will help them naturally develop an increased sense of self confidence, happiness and character.

STUDENTS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

There are so many sporting superstars amongst our students that it’s hard to highlight just a few. If you are passionate about a sport then let us know - who knows, you may inspire others!

Leo Oh - Year 3 - Chess Leo is in Year 3 at NLCS Jeju and he has been playing chess for 3 years. He began playing when he was 6 years old at Summer School in the UK and really enjoyed it, so when he returned home he carried on playing with his mum and dad and also joined a local chess club and played at the weekends. His talent was quickly noticed and he entered into Junior Chess competitions. When he was only 7 he finished 4th in the Chess Olympiad in Korea. His finest achievement came last December when he finished 2nd in the Junior World Chess Championship for 9 year olds. Leo enjoys playing chess as it helps him concentrate and it focuses on discipline, manners, strategy and at the same time learning to accept success and failure. Some of his matches can last up to 5 hours, but Leo doesn’t mind, because he can have ice cream or chocolate afterwards! Here in School, Leo attends the Senior School Chess Club to challenge himself against the older students. We wish him all the very best for his chess career and we will be keenly following his progress.

Lael Kim -Year 5 National Ski Competition

North London Collegiate School Jeju

We are excited to share Lael Kim’s successful result at the Korea Ski Association President Cup. She stood on the podium for four different types. Freestyle (Big Air) - 1st place Freestyle (Half Pipe) - 1st place Freestyle (Slope Style) - 2nd place Freestyle (Ski Cross) - 2nd place

Lael Kim -Year 5 Lael started her ski journey when she was young, following her father who is a Freestyle ski international judge. However, it has been only two years since she started to take her formal ski lessons. She was registered as a ski racer last year. She also participated in the competition last year. It was an enjoyable experience and made her decide to work harder and aim for a better result. See what she achieved this time after a year of hard work! She was 3rd place on Slope Style and Ski Cross at the National Championship. After the competition, she got an injury on her knee, but her passion for sports grew more. Now she is playing ski, yacht, and tennis, and wants to be a professional player of one of them! We are sure she can make it.

STUDENTS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Lily Kim - Year 9 Lily is a longtime student at NLCS Jeju since joining nine years ago in Year 1. During her time at School she has fully immersed herself in the sporting activities on offer; joining the swimming team, football and volleyball squads. She has participated in KISAC tournaments and been to Thailand to compete at FOBISIA. Lily loves all sports and school is the only opportunity where she gets to participate and she enjoys playing and getting to know girls from other year groups when being part of a team. Making new friendships through playing team sports is key for Lily. Her most memorable moment playing for NLCS was when in Year 6 her football team finished 2nd in the Songdo 7’s competition in Seoul.

Mike Shim - Year 6 - Swimming Mike is in his fourth year at NLCS Jeju after starting in Year 2. He enjoys participating in all sports and PE is his favourite lesson! At school he is part of the swimming, football and rugby squads and in recent years he has excelled in the pool. He enjoys playing sport and swimming as it makes him feel fitter and healthier and better about himself; which improves his confidence, reduces his stress and he feels more prepared for his academic lessons. His sporting highlight at NLCS Jeju was finishing first in four out of five swim races when he competed at FOBISIA in Thailand two years ago. Why not try out for a Swim Squad or swim for leisure and pleasure in our pool!

TOURS AND COMPETITIONS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

For those students who excel at sport and are selected for NLCS Jeju squads there is the opportunity to represent the School. Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions have prevented us from travelling to the mainland and overseas for tournaments and competitions. But this year we have managed to play some sporting fixtures against the other schools in the Global Education City. When we are allowed to travel, we are looking forward to entering our teams in FOBISIA Sports competition at Under 11, 13 and 15 age groups at their sporting headquarters in Thailand. We will also participate in many KISAC competitions against the other International schools in Jeju and Korea. Our rugby teams will be able to travel to the mainland to participate in national competitions organised by the Korean Rugby Union. We will also be entering a team in the World Student Games in Dubai and then visiting NLCS Dubai for some sporting competition. Finally, we are looking forward to being able to host visiting teams in many sports here at NLCS Jeju so they can experience our wonderful facilities and hospitality.

ONLINE ACTIVITY

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a lot of teaching going online the PE department have adapted and been creative on ways to teach PE and Sport remotely. Such ideas have involved the students creating their own videos of fitness workouts and gymnastics sequences or copying the teacher as they do circuit training exercises in front of a computer screen! We have also organised some virtual competitions with the other NLCS schools in our family. These include the 1KM challenge; where students, and staff from all four NLCS schools have to run 1KM on the treadmill as quickly as they can. The winners at NLCS Jeju were Mr. Long on staff and Archie Tamlyn and Hailey Choi amongst the students. Coming up before the end of the year we also have a virtual swim meet and an athletics competition against NLCS London, Dubai and Singapore.

STAY HEALTHY AND ACTIVE There is scientific evidence of a correlation between academic success and participation in sport and physical activity. Leading an active lifestyle enables your body to produce endorphins which can increase your feeling of well-being, reduce stress and make you more alert and focused on study. As we are all very busy with the pressures of modern life, it is very important we create time for leisure and recreation. Staff and students are very fortunate to have many opportunities at NLCS; but also some fantastic opportunities here on the beautiful island of Jeju - whether it be cycling along the fantastic coastal roads or exploring an Olle trail or the challenge of hiking to the top of Halla. Participating in sports at NLCS or recreational activities on Jeju are a fantastic way to increase both your physical and mental well-being. Twitter: @NLCSJejuSport

STUDENT WRITING

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association Well done to Year 12 student, Andrew Ki Myoung Cheon who has had an essay highly commended by the Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association. Head of Economics, Mr. Raymond Maher shared the story of his success and Andrew tells us “Though I had a great passion for economics, due to my lack of research skills and knowledge, I have not had much chance to participate in extracurricular activities. But with the recommendation from Mr. Maher about the Harvard Undergraduate Economics Association, I finally was able to demonstrate my abilities in the essay writing competition. I believe it was a good fit for me as one of the topics was actually what interested me Behavioral Economics. I appreciate Mr. Maher sharing a great opportunity with me, and Mrs. Paliwal for helping me accumulate my knowledge which eventually allowed me to accomplish this!” You can read the essay HERE or on the NLCS Hub.

Our Student Council, led by Elysia Bae and Seyfried Sung play a vital role in the student leadership of our School. They tell us what it involves. “At NLCS Jeju, the potential for a better future is always in the air and the Student Council provides students with a forum for not only discussing significant issues, but the opportunity to speak directly to members of the Senior Leadership Team. The Student Council is composed of the Big 8 Student Council Co-Chairs, Year Group Representatives and our link teacher Mr. Sannegadu. The Student Council’s main focus is to discuss issues that affect the whole school and our year group representatives play a vital role in providing feedback on issues of importance. One change that we have made is that we will return to our model of Year Group Representatives serving for six months so that we can provide other students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and represent the views of others.” If you’d like to know more then please contact one of the chairs or Mr. Jason Sannegadu. JUNIOR SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY LESSONS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Philosophy in Year 6 Some of our Year 6 classes were doing philosophy in their live Humanities lessons just before Half Term. One enquiry involved this visual. Mr. James Tipney explains how children were encouraged to look at this puzzle. He also apologises to parents if they were assailed with questions related to it! “Believe it or not, I counted at least 20 different answers that could be logically justified (and many more that could not be!) Questions raised and discussed as a result by the children included - What is a number? - Are numbers made up or invented? - If the world ended, would there still be numbers? - Where can numbers be found? - Is the word ‘number’ the same as ‘a number’? “

What do you think? And how many numbers can you find?
