PRINCIPAL’S LETTER
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju
We are delighted to inform you that on Wednesday 6 March, an MOA was signed between JDC, JEINS and Cognita. Further information and a photo capturing the moment is shared on page two of this newsletter. We are looking forward to welcoming Congnita to campus again later in March for a number of planned meetings.
The community has been in action this week and it has been exciting to see them preparing for future events as well as engaging in new discoveries. Thank you to the societies who have been working with departments for Enrichment Weeks bringing in visitors and speakers as well as engaging students in a range of new activities as well as broadening their horizons such as about diversity in sport last week as part of PE Enrichment Week.
Congratulations to all those who did so well in the various sports competitions with KISAC and the other competitions such as FOBISIA as well as national competitions. We have had individual and team success as the results which are published will indicate. Great participation from so many students across all age groups in the School ably coached by the dedicated teachers! The range of sports was impressive and it demonstrated the School’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
Well done to our MUN students who demonstrated a range of skills in international competition last weekend coming away with many awards. Competing against international students they demonstrated great fluency in English along with a range of other skills compared to the other 18 schools across Asia. The ability to express themselves so fluently is also witnessed in IGCSE monologues, the Senior and Junior School Productions and also the many other drama productions on going currently. It also shows evidence of individual determination as well as great collaboration and teamwork. This is also seen in the work of many other students in science, technology and other activities.
Today we welcome students from NLCS Singapore to spend time with us including Year 12 involved in the Student led Ignite Project. This followed on from our Year 9 students visiting NLCS Singapore previously. These opportunities for our schools to work together are invaluable and enjoyed by all.
Yours sincerely,
Lynne Oldfield PrincipalThe Main Event

PE ENRICHMENT WEEK
The theme of last week’s PE Enrichment Week was ‘Invictus Games’ and took place across the Junior and Senior School.
What are the Invictus Games?
The Invictus Games is an adapted multi-sport event, created by Prince Harry, this international sporting event brings together wounded, injured or sick military servicemen and women from over 20 nations, to inspire recovery and showcase the courage and resilience of those who served.
The name ‘Invictus’ comes from the Latin word for ‘unconquered,’ a fitting representation of the spirit these games embody.
The event brought together 22 nations and 550 competitors through 10 sports.
A busy week…
The week included activities such as sitting volleyball, boccia (a precision ball sport, sitting basketball, a range of adapted games to try, watching the ‘Power of Cycling - Josh’s Story’ and much more!

INVICTUS ATHLETE - YOON KUN KIM
During the Enrichment Week it was our honour and pleasure to welcome Yoon Kun Kim to our campus. Students had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Kim’s inspirational story and ask questions.
Mr. Kim served South Korea in the Marine Corps under the Blue Dragon Unit. During the Vietnam War in 1968, Mr. Kim gained a serious injury and had both legs amputated. Due to his injuries he was discharged from military service and began a long rehabilitation process.
The Main Event
During the recovery phase, Mr. Kim demonstrated a huge amount of resilience, courage and belief. He wanted to represent his country again, but this time it would be in a different way.
Mr. Kim found a passion for cycling and attended the Invictus games, and went on to represent South Korea and competed at many high level, global sporting events for individual road cycling and lawnball, winning many championships across the world.
Thank you Mr. Kim for your time and generosity.
Thank you to our fantastic Sports Department for such an interesting and informative week.
DRAMA ENRICHMENT WEEK
This week was Drama Enrichment Week! There were a number of activities taking place on campus. Including a performance of Argonautica on Thursday evening - an epic Latin poem that recounts the adventures of Jason and his fifty heroic companions in their ship, the Argo. As always the performance was of a high standard and the stage looked fantastic. Well done to all the performers, the tech crew and everyone behind the scenes. We also enjoyed a performance of Romeo and Juliet and took part in charades, story writing and voice acting!
MATHS ENRICHMENT WEEK
Next week is our Maths Enrichment Week, one of the most popular subjects at the School, which is looked after by a team of dedicated mathematicians. We are looking forward to seeing what is in store for us next week - we know it will be jam packed and exciting!

JEJU INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
Year 3 Taeyang (Sage) Lee shared his experience of participating in a Music Festival. “I joined the 7th Jeju International Chamber Music Festival Winners Concert II. I had to go through a lot of processes to participate in this concert. And finally, the day of the concert arrived.
I waited a long time for it to start. I checked what to do before starting to play the piano. When I bowed, it was so dark that I could only see the front two rows.
I wasn’t a bit afraid. I took a deep breath before starting. The piece of music I played is called ‘Butterflies op.59 No.2’ by W. Lege. W. Lege composed this piece while thinking of a field full of flowers and butterflies.
I had a good start, but a few seconds later, I made a mistake. However, I quickly overcame it as if a butterfly lost its footing and fell off a pedal but used its wings to fly back up. I peacefully kept on playing. I accidentally changed the tempo faster when I remembered that I was sitting uncomfortably in my performance suit. If this piece of music were a story, it would have changed the story as if a butterfly had changed its speed from slow to maximum speed. At last, I cheerfully finished with a bow.
I also thank my three friends who came to watch me play. Friends, I will be with you and cheer for you at the important moments.”

EXCHANGE TRIP - NLCS SINGAPORE
A group of Year 9 students spent an enjoyable week at our school in Singapore. The students took part in classes and co-curricular activities, experienced Singaporean culture and made friends with other students. They also had an opportunity to be tourists and enjoy the warmer weather.
Today, we welcomed a group of students from NLCS Singapore to return the favour! We will share photos of their time with us soon!
Being part of a family of schools allows for such opportunities and we look forward to more in the future. Thank you to Mr. Drew Thomas and Ms. Sarah Heydinger for accompanying the group.

GRAD ASSISTANTS
Our talented grads put together this great poster introducing themselves to the community. We would be lost without the help and support of our grads, we are grateful for everything they do - whether that is in boarding, in the classroom, in a support department or during our beyond the curriculum provision. As the grad role is only for two years, we are now seeking new grads to join us from August - if you are or know any recent graduates - take a look!

THE ARTS
IB ART SHOW
Our IB Art Show is taking place this evening from 6pm to 8pm in and around the Parent Hub. Our IBDP students have to display their work to the public as part of their IB course and, as with every year, the work is outstanding.
The Art Show is not just about the students displaying their work, it is also an opportunity for us to celebrate all their hard work and commitment to the course, whilst wishing them well for the future.
We are looking forward to welcoming the parents of our artists and staff to join us at the Exhibition for an evening of celebration. Thank you to Ms. Kennington and her team for all their hard work creating the exhibition.

Well done to you all! It was brilliant! More pictures.
JUNIOR SCHOOL KINDNESS OWLS
THE ARTS
This year the JS added ‘kindness’ as one of our Learning Habits. The Art Department embraced this as the theme for the House Art activity. Each child created an origami owl in the colour of their house. The Art Ambassadors, Art the School CCA and Bryant groups, and a few helpful Year 3s and 4s created a large tree trunk as a home for our colourful owls as well as the lettering to spell out “We will ‘owl’- ways be kind!”
A huge thank you to Mrs Evans for the hard work in pulling all these elements together to create the colourful display - and reminder to always be kind - that welcomes us into the canteen at lunch time. - Mrs Michelle

This week, Chloe Lee interviews Kyran Coughlan.
Chloe: Can you briefly outline your CAS activities?
Kyran: I engage in various activities. I cook food for myself, I participate in environment preservation which in simple terms is picking up rubbish on beaches and on local roads. I do swimming for my CCA, and I occasionally join Bryant too. I was a rugby mentor, where I basically helped the coaches teach. I do weight training, aka going to the gym to build strength and I’m currently a Noro house assistant, trying to support Noro’s success.
Chloe: What are your provisional plans for the CAS group project?
Kyran: I have two potential ideas. One is to organise a charity poker event, where participants pay x amount to enter, and the money entered would go to the designated charity. Or, I am thinking of working with the Halla committee to build the fire area in the back of Halla East, to something that is actually usable, rather than just a pile of rocks.
Chloe: Since the start of the IBDP, in what ways do you think your CAS experiences have contributed to your personal growth and development?
CAS
Kyran: I think rugby mentoring has contributed to my personal growth quite a lot. Sure I used to play rugby but now, I am teaching it to other people, learning leadership and other qualities. Additionally, swimming’s always quite nice, because it’s the way for me to recognise my current fitness as you need to be very fit to be able to swim well and doing that on a weekly basis is beneficial.
FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM
Y13 EXAMS SEASON IS HERE!
Second Language final speaking exams will be taking place on Friday 15 March. In the photo, French Ab Initio students are practising with Ms. Choi for their upcoming finals. We wish them all the best!
GRAD HELP SESSIONS
FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM
Mr. Fred Bate is an Economics grad student, who is one of many around the School conducting extra support sessions, which the students find very helpful.
“I’m Fred, a Graduate Assistant working in the Sixth Form to help students with their IB economics and IB politics. I love being able to engage students on a 1 to 1 basis, and to work with them to understand the academic challenges and aspirations they have. My aim is to give Sixth Formers a deeper comprehension of economics and politics, facilitating their exploration of content they find particularly interesting. Often, I find that when discussing problems in a 1 to 1 session, my own knowledge is enhanced as well, introducing me to new perspectives and ways of understanding an issue. The fact that such constructive dialogue is possible at NLCS Jeju is a testament to the passion and quality of students we have here, and it is a joy to work with them.”
PEER MENTOR
“The Year 12 peer mentors gave a lecture to Year 10 students about how to manage their IGCSE exam schedule next year - sharing their real life experiences from their exams - giving them authentic and useful advice. The students involved were - Minji (Ashley) Koo, Yumin (Angela) Lee, Joohyun (Katie) Hong, Taehoon (Terry) Kim, Jaehyun (Justin) Won, and Dongmyung (Daniel) Kim.
