A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju One of the aims of NLCS Jeju is To develop an outward looking, internationally minded, community of young people who have a clear understanding of the value of commitment and service to others. This is recognised in the commitment our students place on service and in the work they do. An understanding of service is engendered from the moment a child enters NLCS Jeju, perhaps in our Reception class, throughout their journey into Year 13. Examples of service can be found in many forms and I hope that in this week’s newsletter you will be able to gain an understanding of the work of TowerAid, a student committee who oversee all service and community works at NLCS Jeju. Service is not merely donating money - as valuable as that is for various projects, but it is also about the actions and work which many students are engaged in, in order to serve within the School and at local, national and international levels. This week has been exceptionally busy for our students and particularly those engaged in the school production of ‘Alice in Wonderland ‘ performed on Thursday and Friday of this, the penultimate week of the term. I congratulate all the students and staff for their commitment and dedication to making this show a huge treat for all the rest of us. As usual there will be recording of this event for all those of you who are unable to see in person. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

CAREERS DAY WE NEED OUR PARENTS!

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Mr. Thomas Carter Stead has shared updated information on our forthcoming event Careers Day. We have already had a good response from some of our parents and we are looking for more parents, alumni and friends of our community so we can make this our best ever day! Venue - NLCS Jeju (in person and/or livestream) Saturday 1 May 9:00 – 12:00 Year 9 and Year 10 Boarding and Day students The aim of the event is to help our students learn about a broad range of exciting and varied career paths, workplace environments, and employment opportunities. Our Year 9 and 10 students will use their new found knowledge to help them decide their study paths and career paths. This event has previously run with the generous help and support of our parent community. We are now seeking parents who would be willing to donate their precious time to share their experiences of working within a particular career area for the event next year. Without our parents we cannot run this event! We would like to offer two options to parents/alumni who would be willing to volunteer their time, as follows:

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Option 1 • Attend the event in-person • Speak to the students directly about your career area and your experience of the world of work. • The students find this event highly valuable and genuinely appreciate speaking to parents about a wide range of different jobs. • No preparation required. No formal presentation - just your knowledge and expertise and enthusiasm. We will hold a short interview with each parent on stage with the students in the audience, in the style of a TV chat show. Option B: • Record a short video interview to be shown to students on the day. • A member of the teaching staff will record a short (3-5 minute) interview with you about your job when it is convenient for you to do so, via video call. Do not worry about language. We would love to have you speak in English, Chinese or Korean. Our wonderful translation team will be able to help with your materials. Please contact us to be involved Korean - Mina Chang - Parent Relations Manager - mchang@nlcsjeju.kr Chinese - Ying Gao - Parent Relations Manager/Translator - ygao@nlcsjeju.kr General Enquiries - Thomas Carter Stead tstead@nlcsjeju.kr

FOCUS ON TOWERAID

North London Collegiate School Jeju

What is TowerAid and what does it mean to NLCS Jeju? TowerAid is the student committee that oversees all service and community works at NLCS Jeju. They aim to actively develop NLCS Jeju’s contributions to local, national and global service, as well as to stimulate members of the NLCS Jeju community to serve others and be aware of how to make a positive impact inside and outside of School. The name originates from ‘Canon Aid’ from NLCS UK as their address is North London Collegiate School; Canons, Canons Drive, Edgware, London. However, since we have the tower, our team was named ‘TowerAid’. TowerAid consists of 7 members from Years 11 and 12, each with a distinctive role. All requests or enquiries regarding service go through the relevant member in TowerAid.They take care of all fundraising activities in School and Mufti days as well as big events such as the Christmas Bazaar, Summer Fete and the Colour Run. Angela Seo (Chair) Sarah Park (Community Service Fundraising) Juyeon Ma (Community Service Fundraising) Yurim Nam (TowerAid Fundraising) Eunju Seo (TowerAid Fundraising) Clara Kim (Mufti Days) Siyeol Choi (Publicity) TOWERAID· NLCS SERVICE

Meet Our Service Ambassador and TowerAid Chair - Angela Seo - Year 12 Angela Seo has been at NLCS Jeju since 2013 when she was in Year 5. Her whole School career has involved service in many forms. Here she tells us how “Service has always been a big part of my life. It has helped shape who I am today and taught me things I could have not learnt elsewhere. My interest and love for service has led me to become the service ambassador as I wanted to share this experience with the whole school community and provide more opportunities and support to community services within school. I still remember my first service activity when I was 9 years old. I used to play the ocarina at the time and our team went to play for a school for disabled children. After our performance we stayed to help out with the sports day that they were having with their students. I have to admit that as I was young I got scared. It just seemed like a totally different world at the time. However, pretending to be courageous, I helped out eagerly. The fear I felt was soon gone and enjoyment instead took place. The pride I felt when I saw the students of the school enjoy their day with my help is unforgettable. This was when my journey for service started. Then I worked with Village is School. I taught children but I soon came to realise that I was the one who was learning as well. I was learning how to organise and plan for lessons, to open up myself more to get closer with the children, and to cope with unplanned situations. In return for teaching them a subject, I learnt a valuable life lesson that made me who I am right now. From Gueokri, I moved on to Shinpeongri as a leader to teach music and help the library. I try my best every moment to make the children enjoy their lessons. In my opinion, community service is not just doing what I enjoy or want to do, but helping and entertaining others in ways that they will enjoy. With this in mind, I try to become as flexible with my lessons as possible always listening to what the village kids want to do. Later, in Year 10 I joined the Ami Ensemble. We perform a variety of music monthly, including classical pieces and pop songs. When I was in year 10, we used to go play for the elders. Although I’m more comfortable in playing classical music, I played traditional Korean songs such as arirang in front of the elders so that they can enjoy the music. We also started to play for children which involved different repertoires and ways of performing. I also worked at The Frame - another enterprise and then moved on to TowerAid. Being a TowerAid member opened a door to a lot of opportunities for me. Even the regular Mufti days, which seem so simple from an outside view, require a lot of attention and effort from the members. It gave me the opportunity to experience coordinating a big event such as the Christmas Bazaar from the very beginning to its end. The process was time consuming and there was a lot to keep in mind but when you work with a real passion for service, the pride that you feel when the event is done and the happiness you feel when you look at the delighted faces of the students overcomes everything else.

Angela Seo Year 12

North London Collegiate School Jeju

“My final stop to this journey in our school was becoming the Service Ambassador. As the Chair of TowerAid and as somebody who has learnt a lot from service activities, I want to encourage more of our students to participate in service groups and events and to ‘give in to giving’ in their daily lives as well.” Angela’s story makes us incredibly proud. There are so many initiatives - big and small going on around School. Contact Angela if you want to hear more. And if you have a story then share it with us!

Meet Our New members of Tower Aid

North London Collegiate School Jeju

We are very happy to introduce three Year 11 students who recently joined Tower Aid. Tower Aid oversee all volunteer activities in the school and consists of senior students in Year 11 and 12. Yurim Nam, Seoyoon Sarah Park, and Eunju Seo went through an in-depth interview and have been participating in various activities since last year. They are working more passionately this year to make up for last year’s restricted activities due to COVID-19. Yurim said, “I’ve been able to work with Tower Aid for Society activities for quite a long time. I felt that Tower Aid was a brilliant committee, and I applied because I wanted to be part of it.” “I also thought that I wanted to be part of these various volunteer activities and let people know more about them. I especially remember the first Mufti Day, which required more time and effort than I had expected. It was hard because there were many manual tasks such as handing out envelopes, receiving them again, counting money and so on, Sarah added. Eunju also said, “I also realized that there were many things to be done behind the scenes, from selecting a Mufti Day beneficiary to sharing the final results, such as meeting with tutors on the day before Mufti Day to hand out envelopes and checking them out again on the day. However, I want to let many people know what true service can teach us through Tower Aid activities.” Please cheer for the three students who are taking the lead as examples, not just sitting down and managing service groups!

Community Fundraising

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Seoyoon Sarah Park in Year 11 and Juyeon Ma in Year 12 coordinate Community Service fundraising. Their role is to look over all fundraising activities proposed by the community in general such as societies, service groups, and enterprises. They ensure • No schedule clash and appropriate and optimum timing • All events have service purposes • All events are safe and secure and all participants are protected They tell us “If the proposed fundraising events do not meet the criteria then changes are proposed to enable fundraising to continue. This is to encourage as many people to initiate and participate in fundraising. Communication is the key to our job as we are the conduits of the fundraisers themselves and the TowerAid team. “

TowerAid Fundraising The TowerAid Fundraising team are Eunju Seo and Yurim Nam.They work incredibly hard on the TowerAid fundraising projects. They say “Over the past few weeks, the participation for all fundraising has been phenomenal! We are in charge of the proper functioning of the TowerAid projects - making sure that all supplies have arrived, setting up for events, doing the fundraising itself, and cleaning up afterwards. Although there is much work involved in holding the events, we are very pleased to see many students eagerly participating and having such fun. We want to raise our school spirit through the upcoming activities and we hope that students will enjoy them. We have many more events planned for the next few weeks, so please stay tuned for further announcements!

TowerAid Projects and Results The team tells us “So far this year we have implemented a new system of TowerAid fundraising which occurs every two weeks. First created to raise morale in our school during the COVID-19 pandemic, these activities have been organised by TowerAid. These activities include cookie sales, guessing the number of books in the library, coin toss on a rack and so on. This year, we have not only started to hold these activities in the Senior School but in the Junior School as well! It is wonderful to work as a Whole School with a unity of purpose. For the most recent Junior School fundraiser, we made over 800,000 KRW thanks to the huge participation of the students. Please look forward to more exciting activities to come in the near future! This year, although we still have some restrictions due to COVID -19, we have been trying to make our school lively again. So far we have seen the fundraising of the Cultural Awareness Committee, the Giving Artists, Art Society as well as the Senior School Library. We encourage other societies and service groups to join in.

Publicity Officer Siyeol (Sean) Choi The publicity officer manages the publicity materials produced by TowerAid. This includes TowerAid videos, service articles, and notice board. Videos summarise the school community’s service activities and remind the viewers of the significance of volunteering, and the articles specify the positive impacts the school brings to the community. The role is, however, not limited to producing publicity, but assisting presentations and fundraising. The publicity officer is involved in most media and design aspects of TowerAid activities. Enjoy our publicity products! How Can You Help? • Listen to and read all our communications • Make suggestions! • Design your own service activities • Join in Mufti Days! • Notice and participate in service events • Choose to serve whenever you can • Support your friends when they are organising service initiatives • Support your children • Donate your time, energy, spirit, support (and money!) • Choose to serve whenever you can

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD - SILVER As we learn to live with and adapt to the COVID pandemic we are able to pursue some outdoor trips and activities once more. We are delighted to give our students these opportunities - and teachers keep them safe and well and follow all guidelines. Link teacher, Mr. Nicholas Chaddock tells us all about the recent trip to the mainland for our students taking the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. “COVID-19 has accentuated the importance of being outdoors and its tremendous influence on our mental health. After a long absence of trips from our busy calendar of events, our Year 12 Silver Duke of Edinburgh International Award students finally got out on their adventurous journey in the first week of March 2021. We all hope this trip is a sure sign that things are beginning to get back to normal. Our founding ethos, established by Mary Buss and Sophie Bryant, is based on Johann Pestalozzi’s idea that every aspect of the child’s life contributed to the formation of their personality, character and capacity to reason. Pestalozzi’s educational methods were childcentered and based on individual differences, sense perception, and the student’s selfactivity. Pestalozzi was an important influence on the theory of physical education and developed a programme of physical exercise and outdoor activity linked to general, moral and intellectual education that reflected Pestalozzi’s ideal of harmony and human autonomy. Later Sophie Bryant, a ‘Doctor of Mental and Moral Sciences’, would imbed this belief at North London Collegiate School.

This educational philosophy holds strong at NLCS Jeju, and we are in an incredible place to deliver it and integrate it as part of the IB Learner Profile and the idea of an adventurous IB school culture. This Silver trip took us to Andong and Cheongnyangsan, where our two groups of Year 12s hiked up and down the mighty Nakdong river. Hiking the valley for nearly 60km over three days and carrying their food and water was a challenging but rewarding endeavour and one they should be very proud of.” Watch the video HERE

North North London London Collegiate Collegiate School School Jeju Jeju

Student, Lyndsey Cho - Year 12, adds her voice to Mr. Chaddock’s message. She is passionate about the authentic value that DofE offers our students. She says “For me, education at NLCS is more than just sitting behind desks and acquiring knowledge. I think a school curriculum should encompass ‘life skills’ and the best way to learn them is through hands-on experience. From a practical perspective, participating in such a programme like the International Award gives students a strategic advantage in their college application. In times when everyone already has perfect scores, universities are putting more weight on the pupils’ personal interests. I think the International Award improves soft skills such as how to manage time, manage your health and focus on your well-being. In addition, the intensive experience makes students both physically and emotionally stronger by putting them in a tough situation. Through these rigorous experiences, pupils gain perseverance and learn the satisfaction and enlightenment that they can achieve anything by themselves. Korean students’ drop-out rate from overseas colleges and universities is significantly higher than other nations. I assume the main cause of this issue is rooted in Korea’s education system. Some of Korean students have a lack of experience stepping outside of their self-interests. Data I read revealed the average study time for Korean HighSchool students to be more than 15 hours per day in some cases. Furthermore, their low social interaction with foreigners or even each other make them even more vulnerable when they enter overseas colleges and universities where they require grit, determination and social skills. I believe overseas colleges and universities want students who have the ability to listen, learn and open their mind to various viewpoints. The International Award at NLCS has taken students out of their rooms and away from their desks to have some fun, interact with different people, enjoy nature and learn more about what kind of a person they are.

EUROPEAN LANGUAGES

North London Collegiate School Jeju

To commemorate la Journée internationale de la Francophonie the European Languages Society presented on Current Debate in France on Wednesday 10 March. Topics included • Religious extremism • New laws propelled by unfortunate events • Black Lives Matter manifestations against police brutality “We want our students to start thinking globally with the spirit of the IB in mind as they learn French,” says Dr. Maxton Karamalla, link teacher for the EL Society. “Due to COVID restrictions, the celebrations are limited this year, but they are definitely happening! This week the Year 9 girls and boys classes presented to each other about Francophone countries. Peer presentation is a wonderful way to teach, to share, to learn. “ If you want to find out more about our language programmes contact our presenters Year 10 IGCSE Student Rep - Joona Kim Year 12 Ab Initio Student and Chair for Spanish - Hyun Joo (Annette) Cho Year 11 French IGCSE student Rep - Byounghyun (Kevin) Lee Year 12 Language B Student and Chair for French - Siyeol (Sean) Choi

GEOGRAPHY

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Year 9 Geography Class Mr. Hogan shared an article written by one of Year 9 students, Jungahn Gabrielle Oh about her current Geography class. These amazing classes run daily in NLCS Jeju and we love hearing from our students what the lessons really mean to them. Gabrielle says “Part of the currentYear 9’s Geography unit is about slum towns. To deepen our understanding about slum towns, there was an activity in which the students made miniature slum houses from the given materials; such as paper towels, aluminum foil, straws and paper.Through this activity, we were given the opportunity to feel empathy with the slum dwellers, as well as being able to find the positives and negatives of living in a slum town. Most, if not all, of the students in our class have not experienced slums, let alone building them. This activity was effective in identifying the actual pros and cons of slums, based on the events or problems that occurred during the activity. For example, people were working or stealing to earn resources, which is also what often happens in actual slums. At the end of the activity, we were able to tell much more about slums and challenges of living there than we could before. Overall, it was a meaningful project effective in the short period of time.”

BOARDING WEEKEND Last week we hosted a Boarding Taster Weekend for some very lucky Year 4 students who all had the time of their lives! Thank you to Housemistress, Ms. Vivienne Brooks, AHM Mr. Seungmo Chung and the team of teachers from Junior School. They worked incredibly hard providing academic support, reading sessions, games, crafts, sport and lots of treats. A highlight was toasting marshmallows over a campfire. If you’d like to try boarding sign up for a taster session. Contact vbrooks@nlcsjeju.kr (Junior) and pscargill@nlcsjeju.kr (Senior and Halla houses).

PODCASTS Some weeks ago we shared the first Spatium podcast by Shona Park in Year 10. It was also hosted on the Hub. Shona has now shared her second episode which we are delighted to share HERE. Shona tells us “I am so excited for the launch of the very second episode of the NLCS HUB Podcast, Spatium. This time I was so lucky to interview two amazing students from NLCS London and Dubai. Food, uniform, universities, school facilities, school events, gender-mixed classes - we have all the details right here in Spatium. It was so amazing to connect as a whole NLCS community although we are all many miles away from each other. Even though we were able to find similarities and close links between all of our schools there was something unique and significant about each school which makes it extraordinary and remarkable in its own way. I sincerely hope that students and teachers in NLCS will be interested in this link to each school that will broaden the NLCS community in the future. Most importantly I hope it will bring some joy to their lives.” Check out the Hub HERE and see how YOU can contribute.

STUDENT INITIATIVES Our students are always exploring different areas and initiatives around their passions and interests. Minseo Cha - Year 12 - tells us about an opportunity which came her way due to her position as Chair of the Environmental Studies Society. She tells us “The new section in Sustainability, “Interview by the Editor-in-chief ”, was created to interview people from all walks of life who care about the environment. We also want to promote our school’s environmental society to a larger community. The first person I met was Junsoo Kim, the programme director of “Law of the Jungle” (정글의 법칙), a top-ranking entertainment show in Korea. We talked about the programme’s new series and its contributions to the environment. He also shared his experiences and thoughts about visiting remote areas, environmental pollution, and his crew’s effort to preserve nature. This story was also written as a news article for SBS Entertainment News and was displayed on the main page of Naver: http:// naver.me/FeOJQPcQ Interviewing him was also a great chance to promote our society and the school’s efforts towards environmental conservation. UGC

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Seminar Throughout the School year, the UGC team is always ready to help our students whatever their request and wherever they wish to study after NLCS Jeju. Throughout the pandemic they have been thinking of new and creative ways to communicate with parents and students. Recently they recorded a fact-filled seminar for Year 10 - 12 students and parents. This can be watched whenever you like HERE

Janice Choi - Toronto - Chemical Engineering

University offers come in throughout the first few months of the year. We congratulate all our students on their efforts and their successes. We’ll share the final total in the Summer but in the meantime we will bring you the stories behind the offers in our newsletter.

Janice Choi - Toronto - Chemical Engineering Janice (Jiwon) Choi in Year 13 is heading to the University of Toronto to study Chemical Engineering. Janice has always wanted to study in Canada as she has lived there previously, has family there - and she’s heard from friends in our Class of 2020 that it’s an amazing place to live and study. Janice balances her Physics, Chemistry and Maths HL with Spanish, English Lang and Lit and Psychology. A perfect combination for Chemical Engineering, it seems. This degree appealed after a lot of research. Janice was attracted by its high potential for future careers. Janice has been at NLCS Jeju for four years - choosing to board in her final two years. She loves Halla North and values the freedom it gives her to manage her own time effectively. “It’s easy to make friends in the House. There are social activities and you can always hang out with friends.” Like many other Year 13 students (who are almost looking back on their school days now!) Janice advises students to take up sports. She was part of the Badminton squad and thought it a great way to release stress and feel better. She also became part of Sonitas, ending up as leader of Sonitas Hip Hop. “Take advantage of all the advice you are offered” she says, “Ms. Sloczynska was so helpful and knowledgeable. I did think about using a counsellor outside school but realised it was pointless as the guidance inside School was exactly what was needed.” We wish Janice well and look forward to her returning as an alumni!
