FOUNDER’S DAY STUDENTS SERVICE AWARDS
3
A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju It was testament to the efforts of our faculty staff and the marketing, events and theatre teams that we were able to hold the annual Founder’s Day Ceremony in school this week for both Junior and Senior Schools. Without the additional efforts and organisation of these staff to link up our 4 auditoria for the Senior School and 2 auditoria for the Junior School and to live stream the events to our parents, governors, alumni and friends this would not have been possible with the current social distancing regulations. Founder’s Day enables us to come together as a community and strengthens our sense of identity and who we are as North London Collegiate School Jeju and our role in the wider NLCS family. I hope that all our community was reinvigorated and as proud as I am to be part of this family of schools. I hope that all our students and faculty have a much deserved rest this holiday as term life is very full and demanding and in order to gain the most of school everyone needs to ‘recharge their batteries’. Once term starts again we will be announcing how NLCS Jeju will move forward into the next ten years of our life, committed always to delivering an exceptional British Education underpinned by our ‘Three Pillars’. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

FOUNDER’S DAY CELEBRATION
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Why Do We Celebrate Founder’s Day? Founder’s Day is the highlight of the NLCS school year - wherever in the world you are and whichever school you attend. All four schools will celebrate the founding of North London Collegiate School in Camden, London in 1850. Our Founder, Ms Frances Mary Buss was an educational pioneer and was one of the influences on the idea of education for all and equality for women. On Founder’s Day we commemorate Ms Buss, all her family who supported her ideals and we also acknowledge all Heads of School in London and here in Jeju.

FOUNDER’S DAY AT NLCS Jeju At NLCS Jeju we have celebrated this week with traditional ceremonies. We have observed social distanced seating which has meant holding the ceremonies in separate venues but each one has been very special. The ceremonies have involved key elements such as Prayers of Commemoration, The Lord’s Prayer, New Home of Daffodils - our School song (composed by former NLCS Jeju students) - and Where’er you Walk. The Music department has been hard at work for weeks ensuring that all the students know the lyrics and that they have practised every word!
The ceremony involves a Principal’s Address - this year focusing on environmental issues. And, of course, the famous Daffodil Procession brings us all together as every student whatever their age and stage - has a chance to walk across the stage and hand their daffodil to a member of the Big 8 or Little 8. If you missed the ceremonies, would like to remind yourself or hear everything again then we invite you to see the Livestream link HERE and HERE for the main Junior School and Senior School ceremonies. You can see the programme HERE

SOCIETIES EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
North London Collegiate School Jeju
One of the key student roles in School is the Chair of the Societies Executive Committee. This role is taken each year by one of the Big Eight. This year the Chair is Angelina Lee. She has already begun working with her Committee and tells us “After the handover of the role in January 2021, our first job was to check the progress of each of over 40 societies. We tried to establish individual links with the chairs so that we can assist them accordingly. We then finalised the guidelines for online meetings. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the societies had been struggling to function to their maximum potential. Now we have clarified the number of options societies can choose from if we were to go into lockdown again. Next we implemented a meeting log system. The chairs have been required to take attendance for each meeting and briefly report on their weekly progress to the SEC on their assigned meeting log sheet. This was to track each society’s work so that we could renew our societies list for the Academic Year 2021-22. Our fourth job was to make links with the NLCS Jeju Hub Team. Now it is part of every society’s duty to contribute to this wonderful academic platform, once every four weeks. By this, we have also encouraged societies to share their expertise also with people outside their own communities. We will continue to make improvements to the societies management system throughout the year. Some of our plans include revising the Chair Selection Process and introducing the Societies Awards System. “ If you’d like to know more about any of our societies then please contact the individual Chairs or Angelina and her team.
MUSIC THEORY SOCIETY
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Maeji Son,Year 10, Chair of the Felicia Music Theory Society explains what Felicia is all about and why you should join! “We are a music theory society. We strongly believe that the theory is as important as the practical ability. Since the other music societies focus on the practical part, we thought that there should be a society aiming for the theory and this is why I decided to create a Felicià society. Felicia helps the student to understand and apply their actual knowledge to their music by having discussions about aspects and the history of music. We also organize mentoring sections for KS3 students who are interested in applying to ABRSM theory. During KS3, students aren’t often able to learn more about music unless choosing IGCSE Music in Year 10. If you are one of the students who want to learn about music during KS3, Felicia is a great opportunity for you. Basics are the most important thing in learning. Felicia and the Music department believe that this is a point where NLCS Jeju could take part in helping students in theory. This will be a chance for students who wanted to study ABRSM but failed, or couldn’t work by themselves. Felicia is currently recruiting new members who are interested in learning music and will apply to do IGCSE Music. If you are interested in music theory such as composing, Intervals, melody, rhythm, counterpoint, harmony, form, and electronic sound production, you are very welcome to participate.”

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY KOREA We are excited to share that Donghyun Lee, Alvin Hyoungtak Cha and Sunny Seohyun Bae have been awarded First Place in the Junior Performance division in National History Day Korea. Guided by the National History Day programme, students investigate a topic of their choosing based on an annual theme, and through this lens, they can explore areas of history that have often been forgotten or ignored. This year, the NHD theme was “COMMUNICATION IN HISTORY: THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING”. Donghyun, Alvin, and Sunny decided to research Jikji, which is the World’s First Movable Metal Type Printing Book from the Goryeo Dynasty. They created the performance, Jikji: the Window of Communication with the help of teachers, Andrew Thomas and Dylan Loser.
With more than 600,000 students competing from the United States and around the world, they were invited to compete in June at the University of Maryland at College Park. For these three students, the NHD journey is just beginning! Congratulations to you all. We can’t wait to hear how it goes in June.
COLLABORATION WITH LONDON - ENGLISH Why not Walk To School? Mr. Nicholas Chaddock’s Year 12 English class have had the pleasure of finishing off their ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit of work by posing questions to the NLCS London Eco-Committee. Collaboration is one of the big benefits of being part of a global school network like NLCS. Having shared their questions, Ms. Chapman and the Eco-Committee kindly recorded their online discussions. It is really great to listen to their wonderful spoken English and feel their passion to do their bit to tackle the environmental issues we all face. Please watch the video below and think about their commitment to walking or cycling to school. Do you live in the GEC? Could you be doing the same? Walking to school helps develop numerous skills that might not be obvious at first. Time management and organisation develops as you begin to understand what time you need to leave your home and at what pace you need to walk at. Decision making and planning develops around route selection, an optional stop at a shop or perhaps a daily rendezvous with a friend. Weather management and dealing with the elements helps organisation and an understanding of the environment. The chances of social interaction and conversation are far higher on a walk to school than they are sitting in a car. Self-awareness and awareness of others develops, including the awareness of the dangers of traffic and strangers. Lastly, there are the obvious health benefits of walking. How about this spring you ask your parents if you can walk to school? https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Rqd7GYLgk6r1cEZDMTk-XkzVqxR2llsP
MUFTI DAYS
North London North LondonSchool Collegiate Collegiate School Jeju Jeju
Clara Kim is the Mufti Day Coordinator at Toweraid. She organises Mufti days and leads the process of selecting student-led service groups that have applied for Mufti money. “Students donate 2,000 KRW each Mufti Day to wear casual clothes instead of school uniforms and smart dresses. Raised funds are distributed to accepted student-led service groups, and TowerAid usually chooses two groups per one Mufti day. We prioritize groups that are willing to support urgent causes. However, when there are no student-led service groups that have applied, TowerAid decides charity organisations that are relevant to the status quo.

“At the beginning of the academic year, TowerAid members create Mufti envelopes with student checklists and recording tables. We use our break time, lunchtime, and free periods on Mufti Days to count donations as tutors or tutor representatives bring in Mufti money envelopes. Please be reminded that your donations on Mufti days are used to support either community service teams of NLCS Jeju or to highly in-need communities. You are more than welcome to donate more than ₩2,000 and thank you always for your participation.”
LANGUAGE AMBASSADORS
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Ms Louise Symonds, Academic English Strategy Coordinator has shared a major initiative to support, nurture and promote excellent academic English for every student. She says “It is with great pleasure and excitement that we launch the Language Ambassador scheme in the Senior School at NLCS Jeju. By becoming a Language Ambassador, students will be instrumental in transforming the way English is used inside and outside of the classroom at our school." Our Alumni, together with students in Years 12 and 13, have told us how they wished they had taken more opportunities to speak and practise their English whilst they were studying in the lower years. They now find themselves having to work harder to polish their language skills in order to compete with their international peers, when they are already incredibly busy with their IB, graduate and post-graduate studies. The Senior School Language Ambassador roles are open to students in Years 7-11. News about the Junior School Language Ambassador initiative will be available soon. Senior School students who have a passion for improving their own English skills, and those of their peers, and who are keen to take on a role which builds confidence and involves leading others should apply by explaining their interest in an email to me at lsymonds@ nlcsjeju.kr. The Language Ambassadors will wear the ‘English Language’ pin badge and chat with their peers, giving students opportunities to practise their English skills. They will receive initial and ongoing training and work closely with the AE Prefects who all have a real passion for improving the Academic English proficiencies of our students here at NLCS Jeju. If you are looking at additional ways to boost academic language skills, please note the importance of reading (literary and non-literary texts). Students should read for at least 20 minutes every day to get regular exposure to high quality language. Importantly, students should also be reading texts in their first language (literary and non-literary) in order to hone their academic language skills. Please contact me if you would like further guidance on this. Eileen (Heesun) Chung, Senior Academic English Prefect, Year 13, adds her comments “Last week, Academic English (AE) Prefects presented in each year group assembly to inform students about the Language Ambassador role. Starting from next term, AE prefects will work closely with the Language Ambassadors to encourage the use of English around the school, mainly through approaching peers and having day to day conversations. Language Ambassadors will be wearing the Language Ambassador ‘English Language’ pin badge at all times.
Therefore, if students are approached by a Language Ambassador they should welcome them and expect to be able to practise using their language skills by speaking to them in English. During the year, Language Ambassadors will also take part in further projects with the Academic English Prefects (Year 12s and 13s), working together as pioneers to develop the levels of English in our school. “ Favourite Language Quotes selected by our Academic English Prefects Jisoo Shin: ‘The English Language is a work in progress. Have fun with it.’ - Jonathan Culver Stella Yeom: Language is “the infinite use of finite means.” – Wilhelm von Humboldt. This shows you don’t need to be perfectly fluent in English to go out and have interesting conversations with other people. The Language Ambassador pin badge was designed by Alison (Hyeyun) Song, Yr 12

SERVICE - ENSEMBLE AMI We have news of a wonderful service project coming your way. Ensemble Ami is a Music service initiative run by two students - Seok Hyeon Moon and Jinyeong Oh.They are always looking for ways to serve the community through the medium of music.
Seok Hyeon tells us “Ensemble Ami is a music enterprise that does many services in the local community, playing music (Song-ak library, Gotjawal, senior welfare centres, hospital, and local events). Due to COVID-19 we couldn’t really play music in the local community, so we have tried an un-contact music concert back in January and are currently planning for busking in the school Green Gallery. Our next event will probably be busking.” At these and other events, Ensemble Ami, will be selling mugs. Please support them and buy a mug. They are environmentally friendly and a good way to remember to do the right thing!
SOROPTIMISTS NATIONAL SINGLE PARENTS’ DAY (US) Thank you to Katie Min of the Soroptimists who helps coordinate consistent support to the Single Mothers’ Home here in Jeju. She explains what National Single Parents’ Day means In the early days, single parenting was caused by tragic accidents such as illness, war or even death during childbirth. However, as we get closer to the present, we can recognise that single parents are often widowers or divorcees. This resulted in a new issue which is the complicated and lengthy process of court and later on the struggle of their children proceeding the divorce of their parents. Both the children and their parents face various challenges while living their normal day life. Many single parents often feel that the absence of a parent limits the childhood experience of their children especially in families with multiple children. Moreover, children can experience childhood trauma from the divorce or the negative views the society has. This is a problem that our whole community has to work against to improve the life quality of single parent families. Single parent families often face realistic problems so to minimise this problem there are several organisations for single parent families around the world. For example, Spin has been providing single parents with the information they need from volunteers. Also, another organisation called Spark helps single parents who have a child under 18.There are numerous organisations to support single parents financially and mentally. Contact Katie and the Soroptimists to find out more information.
