PRINCIPAL’S LETTER

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju

The Summer Term has begun and for many of our students this term sees the culmination of all their years of education at NLCS Jeju in their IB Diploma Programme examinations, the results of which determine their final destinations at universities across the world. We wish Year 13 every success in the examinations. Our year 11 students have also begun their IGCSE examinations and so we wish them every success in their examinations. IGCSEs are well regarded across the world, specifically too in the US as they are external evidence of student achievement. Due to issues across the world with a lack of student integrity and academic dishonesty, having world recognised external examination results as evidenced through their certificates, is beneficial for our students when they make applications to universities across the world. With all our students we remind them of the importance of balance in the planning of their revision schedules with limited periods of revisions, breaks, healthy eating and of course sleep. The examination season is like a marathon and so students need to pace themselves and without adequate sleep, no students will be able to perform during examinations!

Although other year groups are involved in annual examinations and assessments across the School it is good to celebrate the many other ‘beyond the curriculum opportunities’ the students have experienced this term already as well as the opportunity to compete successfully in sports competitions as you will read about. Outdoor education is highly valued in our community and so it has been good to see the enthusiasm and preparations for the International Award (Duke of Edinburgh Award) expeditions and also the upcoming Year 8 Year expedition next week. Students have also received recognition for their academic endeavours in a number of areas such as history, computer sciences, mathematics to name but a few. We have students engaged in book week in Junior School and also in Year 12 on Collaborative Science Project (CSP.)

Next week we welcome colleagues from NLCS schools and International for annual Monitoring (Senior School) and Inspection (Junior School) visits as some of the community will be aware as surveys have been distributed as well to them.

Yours sincerely,

Here are the biggest stories from around the School this week.

FOUNDER’S DAY

The annual Founder’s Day ceremony took place during the last week of the last term, as always it was a special and enjoyable occasion for celebrating the founding of our school in London. Here are some photos of the various ceremonies, thank you to all who contributed. More pictures.

SERVICE ENRICHMENT WEEK

Before the end of term we had our first ever Service Enrichment Week - here, the chair of Toweraid, Suwoong Kim explains the week further - “This initiative is designed to highlight the commendable efforts of our school’s diverse service Bryants and CCA groups, which enhance engagement within our community. This is particularly targeted towards our younger students, who will be leading those service groups in the near future.

Throughout the Service Enrichment Week, all 16 student-led service groups, along with TowerAid, hosted informative stalls. This endeavour served as an enriching platform for our school community to acquaint themselves with the ongoing projects and missions of each service group. Notably, four groups—Penguin Village, Behind the Scene, Project Salute, and Bridge Builders—ran fundraising events, each with its unique approach to making a meaningful contribution to our community.

The Main Event

We trust this week provided valuable insights into the essence of service that each group endeavours to share with our community. Through these immersive experiences, we aspire for everyone to have found a renewed appreciation for service, fostering a core value of NLCS Jeju. We anticipate that the Service Enrichment Week will have a lasting influence, encouraging a commitment to service that transcends beyond this week.”

The Main Event

PSHE ENRICHMENT WEEK

Next week is our PSHE Enrichment Week - we will share updates throughout the week and in our next newsletter. ‘Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future - the focus of the Enrichment Week will be pregnancy, with enrichment talks, debates and display booths throughout the week.

HISTORY MEDAL

20 NLCS Jeju students took part in the National History Day competition in Seoul in February. Students were asked challenging questions from a tough group of international teachers. Despite the difficulties, the NLCS Jeju team achieved our best results at the competition:

Senior Group Exhibit - 1st Place- Power of Sports in the 88 Seoul Olympics: Transforming the Domestic Socioeconomic Landscape and Shaping International Politics- Jae Hyun (Jayden) Kim, Choisung Park, Youngjae Seo, Hyeonbeom (John) Shin.

Well done all and thank you to the History team who supported them.

MIMI HAN

Last week we had the privilege to welcome Mimi Han (Advisory Board Member of N.E.W Entertainment Corp and previous Vice President of the World YWCA) to our campus.

Mimi presented to our Senior School students in the morning with a focus on ‘visionary leadership’ - the students were very engaged and I think we can all agree the session was too short.

Later, Mimi, took part in an interview with our Director of Marketing and Admissionsallowing us to delve deeper into how Mimi became so visionary, positive and resilient, and how we can also be the same, regardless of the setting.

Students then had an opportunity to chat with Mimi over lunch, well done to all the students who joined the group, your questions were well thought out.

Mimi graciously provided insight into how we can all be visionary leaders and taught us to focus on ‘the why’ to help rebalance our life goals. Thank you Mimi for flying all the way to Jeju and fitting us into your busy schedule.Thank you also to Ms. Jenny Liu (Head of Senior School Mandarin) for arranging the visit.

GAYAGEUM

“On Wednesday the 20th of March, NLCS Jeju’s one and only Gayageum (Korean traditional string instrument) CCA held a performance at the Jeju Elderly Home. The performers ranged from year 7 to year 13 students, and all of them enjoyed their opportunity to shine beyond the scope of NLCS Jeju and to spread their talents to a wider community. Following the performances in gayageum, they also had a karaoke time with Teletubbies!” - Yeonsoo (Catherine) Kim.

YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL

“Year 4 showcased the Junior School Learning Habits during their ‘Jeju Island Adventures’ residential this term. All of the adults were blown away by the children’s resilience and courage to stay away from home for the night with their NLCS friends. At all times, the children showed kindness and empathy and supported each other to try their best during our visit to Vaunce park and Mazeland.” - Alex Lea

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TALK

Daun Lee recently gave a speech about her documentary looking at how Jeju agriculture has been impacted by environmental policies to our Year 6 students. Students were encouraged to think about their own research they would like to do and they would then present this. Her documentary is being funded by National Geographic. Thank you to Daun for joining us!

YEAR 8 ENERGY TRIPS

“On Monday and Tuesday, the Year 8 geographers had their first taste of fieldwork in senior school, investigating energy production on Jeju Island. With 18% of the island’s energy generated from renewable resources, how realistic is it to meet the government’s target of carbon neutrality by 2030? What are the factors that make these transitions difficult?

The students visited Sinchang Wind Farm to assess the environmental impact of wind power, before heading to Hwasun Power Station to explore its siting factors and the impact of the necessary infrastructure required to operate it. Finally, the students participated in a decision-making exercise on Songaksan, which involved taking measurements using anemometers, making field sketches to highlight natural and human features, and subsequently deciding upon the most appropriate location for a wind turbine in the area.

Other News

The trips would not have been a success without our experienced, energetic, and enthusiastic team of geographers, expertly supported by some of our graduates, honorary geographers for the day!”” - Mr. Dorian Brown (Head of Geography).

JUNIOR SCHOOL SEOUL HISTORY TRIP

“During this Easter break, 18 NLCS Jeju Junior School students in year 4, 5, and 6 embarked on a two-day Seoul history trip.

Other News

Other News

On the first day, they explored the main buildings of Gyeongbokgung Palace while listening to explanations from a guide, learning about the majesty and historical significance of Gyeongbokgung as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty.

On the second day, they visited the Seoul Independence Hall, where they toured permanent exhibitions such as the prison, watchtower, execution grounds, and walls. At this site where many anti-Japanese independence activists were imprisoned during the Japanese colonial rule, the students honoured the noble patriotic spirit of the independence fighters, imprinting values of freedom, peace, and patriotism in their hearts.

One student who participated in this experience said, “Seeing Gyeongbokgung and Seodaemun Prison firsthand, rather than just in books, has made me even more interested in the history of our country.” - Ms. Geun Lee

EXPLORING PSYCHOLOGY CCA

SESSION 1: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY

In the first week of the Exploring Psychology CCA, we learnt a brief overview of what psychology is and the history and origins of psychology

Definition of Psychology

Psychology is often represented as the Greek symbol psi Ψ, meaning soul during the time of the ancient Greeks thus it is also referred to as the study of the soul It is the scientific study of observable behaviour and mental processes It seeks to understand how people think and act and encompasses a wide range of topics, from cognitive processes to social interactions and mental health

Behaviours are observable actions, while mental processes, also known as cognition, are internal thought processes An example of a mental process can be memory or thinking which we can easily observe in our everyday lives Psychology is a very broad field, often broken down into several different branches Each branch is centred on a specific subfield and differs in terms of what it studies or what perspective it typically takes All of these areas of psychology share the goal to help describe, explain, predict, and sometimes change how people behave and think

Among the various branches of psychology the IB course focuses on the sociocultural approach, biological approach and cognitive approach While pure psychology focuses on the pursuit of knowledge and the expansion of theoretical frameworks, applied psychology harnesses that knowledge to address practical challenges and improve human well-being

HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY

During ancient times, it was the Greek philosophers, namely, Aristotle, who first thought about consciousness He believed consciousness stemmed from the heart, as people without their heart or otherwise “soul”, would die They pondered about the subject, engaging in many discussions from a philosophical point of view that formed the foundations of, and spurred the development of what we know today as ‘psychology ’

As scientific outlook was gradually developed, philosophy started losing its prominence, as did the soul Psychology began to be defined as the ‘the study of mind’

During the 19th century, German psychologists Wilhelm Wundt and William James solidified psychology as a distinct field of study

CURRICULUM ON A PAGE

The Academic Leadership Team is pleased to share with you the new Curriculum on a Page booklet for Term 3. This is a brand new resource for parents and students to provide specific information about the term ahead, which we plan to publish in advance of each term.

The creation of these booklets has been the result of feedback from both parents, our Senior School Student Council, and also Heads of Department to ensure that we provide all relevant information in one place. We understand how challenging it can be to keep track of what your child is learning about across such a wide range of subjects and activities and we hope that this booklet proves to be a handy reference tool for you to refer to when speaking to your child about their day and their studies.

JUNIOR SCHOOL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR FUNDRAISING

For the Christmas bazaar, the Junior school and First school children made Christmas cards to raise money for Childfund Jeju.

We sold every one of the Christmas cards we made. Not a single one was left and we raised ₩314,000! ₩30,000 of this was Alex selling a painting he donated. Well done Alex! The money was donated to Childfund Jeju and was used to buy backpacks and stationery for 8 children starting first grade.

Thank you Mrs Evans for the wonderful idea and for assisting with running the stall at the bazaar. Thank you Childfund Jeju for the wonderful work you do supporting children in need.

The five houses in the Junior School; Baek Ho, Cheong Nyong, Hae Tae, Hyeon Mu and Ju Jak, are a source of great pride for each of our students. When students are in Year 6, they can apply for a leadership role as House Captain. Six exceptional students are selected to represent each house; supporting younger students, organising house events and inspiring house pride and passion.

Here is what this year’s House Captains have to say about their house and what it means to be a House Captain.

CHEONG NYONG

The year of the Azure dragon/Cheong Nyong has arrived! Good afternoon to you all, we are the Cheong Nyong House Captains. This year’s Cheong Nyong house captains are Belle Ji, Hayool Ko, Philip Joo, Juwon Ha, Yonjay Nam and Stella Lee. The blue dragons have numerous talents such as turning out victorious in the tug of war house competition and the count down! Cheong Nyong’s colour is the tranquil blue, and blue is seen as a sign of stability and reliability. We hope to be a house captain of a house that is victorious and resilient. For the upcoming house competition, ‘Sports day’, we are picking the best people for each sport. Wish us the best of luck, for the mighty Cheong Nyong.

JUNIOR SCHOOL HOUSE CAPTAINS

BAEK HO

As a House Captain, we say that we care more about teamwork, kindness and courage than victories. House Captains have responsibilities for the whole house and will be a part of the progress that has been made for our own house. Baek Ho means white tiger in Korean. To be Baek Ho, we fight and compete in a sense of pride and cooperation.

The white tiger holds a special importance in Korean culture. In Korean mythology, it is believed that when a tiger has been through many obstacles and eventually comes to understand the true meaning of life, the fur turns white and the tiger becomes a sacred spirit. Which stands for our resilience and flexibility to come back after our burdens and hurdles have been overcome and to learn from our mistakes. We value teamwork, kindness and courage. From that, we have won the house shield more than 6 times - countless compared to the other houses.

HYEON MU

Hyeon Mu students of all ages are excited to try their best in every activity and support each other. Hyeon Mu turtles showcase all of our Junior School learning habits but our resilience and kindness set us apart from others.

We are all so proud of our fantastic House Captains, who inspire us to try our best. The 2023/24 Hyeon Mu House Captains are; Hanna Lee, April (Kwonyi) Kim, Stacey (Minseo) Back, Ryan (Hyunmin) Ko, Louis (Yujun) Lee, and Jungwoo Sim.

Hanna -

I have been so excited for everything that has happened this year! I will keep trying my best and aim to see Hyeon Mu win! I believe the only easy way to victory is to work hard and respect each other. That doesn’t sound easy, but it is the most efficient way to a favourable result. From Y1 to now, I have continually followed these steps and come to this stage; to become a house captain. Practice, respect, and practice. I believe everyone deserves to achieve their goals so I will do my best to teach the younger turtles in Hyeon Mu everything I know. Always try, and NEVER give up.

This year is the last year for me in my house; Hyeon Mu, so it is my goal to lead this house to victory! I want to lead the small turtles to become stronger and braver. We will show all the learning habits, especially resilience. If we don’t give up, we can do anything!

Slow and steady wins the race.

HAE TAE

Jungwoo -

Since this is my last year in junior school, I was extremely excited to be picked as the House Captain! When I came to NLCS in Year 2, Hyeon Mu was always second in every competition. However, when the last House Captains won the house shield, it made me confident that we, (the terrific Hyeon Mu House Captains), will win the house shield again and make Hyeon Mu the best house. I’ll always try my best to make students more confident and happy in Hyeon Mu.

Try to be a turtle at ease in your own shell

Hello everybody, we are the Hae Tae House Captains: Ivie, Rael Jiwoo, Olivia, Jiwon and Benedict. The most wonderful house, Hae Tae is mighty and open minded. We are full of competitive spirit but we also have sportsmanship. We know how to be creative and think critically. It is such a pleasure to be a House Captain of the wonderful house of Hae Tae. As the House Captains, we strongly believe that Haetae will win the house shield this year. The Hae Tae House Captains are not perfect alone, but with Hae Tae we can be perfect for sure and win the house shield. The House Captains will try our best to lead Hae Tae to victory. Let’s Go Hae Tae!!

We look forward to working with our First School and Lower School students and seeing the progress we all build up together. Thank you for giving us this precious opportunity!

JUNIOR SCHOOL HOUSE LIP-SYNC COMPETITION 2024

“What a fabulous event with an electric atmosphere! This year the Junior Shool House Lip-sync Competition saw a few ‘firsts’. It was the first time that the House Captains and Heads of House had picked only one song for their whole house to perform together, it was the first time we have made videos rather than live performances, it was the first time that house teams from the senior school had been invited to make rockumentaries with us, and it was the first time we have screened our videos in the PAC!

“What a fabulous event with an electric atmosphere! This year the Junior Shool House Lip-sync Competition saw a few ‘firsts’. We all sat in houses in the PAC and eagerly awaited our team’s videos. The running order was decided by house captains playing ‘rock, paper, scissors’. The Cheong Nyong blue dragons were up first with ‘Try Everything’ by Shakira (from the movie, Zootopia), followed by the Hyeon Mu green turtles with ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake. The red Ju Jak phoenix team was in the middle with ‘Uptown Funk’ by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, the purple Hae Tae team came next with ‘Hall of Fame’ by The Script, and the yellow Baek Ho tigers were the last video to be screened, with ‘Anything For You (Tiger Lily)’ by George Ezra.

The Senior School teams worked with our Year 6 children to make fantastic documentaries showing all of our hard work and some funny moments of making our lip-sync videos, and we hope to have more senior school/ junior school house collaborations in the future.

A big thank you to our impartial, VIP, guest judges; Ms Imogen Elliott (NLCS Lip-sync and singing expert), Mr. Luke Lamkin (NLCS Jeju Cool Moves and Dance Expert), and Mr. Henry Wiggins (Vice Principal of Lip-Syncing). They scored each house on song choice, lip-syncing, participation and FUN, and the much awaited scores will be announced at the celebration assembly at the end of term....” - Ms. Jenny Wayte (Year 1 Teacher, and House Coordinator).

“In Year 3, students are delving into the world of soil and its vital role in plant growth as inspiration for their dance exploration. Recently, they went on a fascinating journey to the Biology department, guided by Mrs. Prichard, the Head of Biology. There, they were enlightened about terrariums and the significance of soil. They explored the role of rocks in aerating soil for growing roots and how fungi are a transportation system for food. They are very excited to turn these fun facts into movements in their upcoming dance sessions.” - Ms. Rohita Menon-Gordon (Dance Teacher).

STEP ASIDE, THE NEW BIG 8S ARE HERE!

On 25 March, Ms. Minic and Dr. Karamalla organised a training session for the members of the Big 8 2024-25. This was the first time our new Big 8 students have undergone such training.

Although all Big 8 students are reliable, approachable and conscientious individuals, it was important to spend some time exploring the role, expectations, and how to align their talents with NLCS Jeju’s ethos and values.

The training was positively received by the students, and their feedback was very positive. We look forward to working with this brilliant group next academic year!
