A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju This week we have been privileged to enjoy the Visual Arts Enrichment Week and so have benefitted from a plethora of colours around the school as we have enjoyed the IGCSE exhibitions as well as seeing the Year 9 digital work, and the ongoing work of the Junior School. Enrichment Weeks also allow for related lectures to be presented and we all went on a journey through Brazil through the Architecture Society who had invited Vice Principal - Mr Toby Waterson, to talk on Architecture in Brazil. The Visual Arts are a strength of NLCS Jeju and play a key role in both our curriculum and co curricular programmes and our students’ talents and experimentations are so ably developed by the Heads of the Departments in both the Junior and Senior Schools. The changeable weather and the restrictions this can bring - such as storms or poor air quality - can play havoc with our extensive Bryant Programme on Saturdays. A special thanks this week to the CCA and Bryant Team, led so strongly by AVP - Mr Douglas Machin, for their sterling efforts to ensure that we reorganise and give other worthy opportunities to our students, often at the last moment, when we are beset by issues which force some activities to be changed. Bryant continues this Saturday so let us hope that we can continue unabated! Finally, congratulations to our rugby squad who have made a brilliant start to their Rugby competition on the Mainland and have won very convincingly in their first three matches. We wish them continued success and we are all following their matches which are generating great excitement at School. Good luck to them all as they progress through the tournament. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal
WHEN COLO(U)RS SPEAK Last week, we were privileged to have three nights of the entirely student led musical When Colo(u)rs Speak. This was a real departure by our team as previously the students had staged musicals written by professionals and staged many times previously in the West End of London or on Broadway, New York! This year’s show was brave, bold and experimental. It was also great entertainment and our audiences of teachers and students praised it highly. Eunice Lee - Year 12 - creator shares her thoughts now the final curtain has fallen. “After one year of crafting and another of rehearsing, the show has finally come to an end.

When Colo(u)rs Speak takes a special place in my heart - it was the summer of 2019 when Chelsea and Austin came to life, and last year’s quarantine period was more of a continuation of midnight composition sessions for us. Living in this historical fantasy has truly highlighted our high school years, and I want to thank all students and staff who have dedicated so much time and effort into this project - ranging from sawing wood for constructing stage sets to directing separate scenes and designing the most effective position of stage lights. Through this production, we ultimately wanted to deliver our interpretation of racism and acceptance through an artistic lens. I hope our message that you can “ignite the magic of your days” instead of “defying your stars” is delivered through our songs and words. We send endless gratitude to our audience members both online and in person who walked through this journey with us. “May this story change your world.” Chelsea Engelmann”
IGCSE AND YEAR 9 VISUAL ARTS DISPLAY This week, it’s been the turn of our Visual Arts department who have run their Enrichment Week. The corridors have been ablaze with colour, a real feast for the eyes. Head of Art, Ms Sharon Kennington says - “We have loved celebrating the talents of our Year 11 and Year 9 students. We have shared IGCSE work from each Year 11 student. Each student’s work is individual and reflects their hard work and application over the two year course. We also shared Year 9 digital work - examples of new schemes of work introduced this year as part of a drive to incorporate digital skills and disciplines into the portfolios of every year group.” Take a look at some of the work here -
YEAR 4 ART Thank you to Junior School Head of Art, Ms. Krista Merrill who has shared pictures of a wonderful Abstract Art class last week. She says “Guest artist, Ms. Elizabeth Collison, led the Class 4GH lesson, encouraging students to experiment with materials, mediums and colour to create some fabulous abstract art. The drying rack is full of gorgeous work. Well done, Year 4! And thank you so much, Ms. Collison.” So much fun and so much mess. Just how it should be!

Mandarin Showcase Mandarin teachers, Ms. Maggie Dai, Ms. Jenny Hill and Ms. Lailai Luo hosted a very successful Mandarin Showcase in the Junior School last week. It is lovely to see how confident the children are as they sing, dance, recite poetry and act out scenes in Chinese. Take a look at the Dragon Dance HERE and some lovely pictures of the children. Several of the Year 5 and 6 students shared their opinions on what they learned in the preparation and performance of their pieces. “As a presenter and an MC of the Junior Chinese Showcase, I got to learn a lot of different things about Chinese. I improved my Chinese skills while making our slide presentation and also, it really helped me with fluency. Me, Derek, and Max worked hard as an MC team. We are now closer now to each other. As Max is a Chinese first language speaker, I learnt a lot of fluency and grammar for Chinese. Thank you to our Mandarin teachers for having the opportunity of having this wonderful space to let me be the MC and the presenter.” -Lucy Lee 6EF
“The Mandarin showcase was amazing and so fun! I like presenting my work, but I also like looking at other’s hard work too.” -Sophia Park 5GH “When I was in the Mandarin showcase I became more confident in speaking mandarin. This presentation made me achieve new heights I thought I could never reach before. This presentation made me lose a lot of my stage fright because in the audience there are a lot of people who support you.” -Sean McKeogh 5AB “I thought I was very funny in the Mandarin showcase! Now I think I am much better at Mandarin now and I thought I could never be good but I practiced a lot and I was much better at Mandarin.” -Ethan Cox 5AB “I have learned a lot of Mandarin in the last two years such as Mandarin characters, different kinds of foods, animals, transportations and our daily life. Finally, we challenged ourselves to make sentences using all that we’ve learned. As my friends and I were starting to become more fluent and skilled at writing and speaking Chinese, we had a chance to do a Mandarin showcase. During the Mandarin showcase, I could see others’ efforts and enjoyment. When I was on stage with my friends in front of the audience, I felt a little bit embarrassed, but while I was showing everyone else what I’ve learned during 2 years, I thought that this was a glory.” -Roy Jeong (Junu) 6EF
ROMAN BANQUET Latin teachers, Ms. Margaret Baird and Ms. Sandra Coll held a wonderful Roman banquet to celebrate the end of Latin and Philosophy Enrichment Week. Their Year 10 and 12 Latin students enjoyed a great feast of Roman-esque food and grape juice.
RUGBY TOURNAMENT Update Our MS Rugby Squad are currently at the National Spring Season Tournament - and they could not be doing any better! They have won their first three matches comprehensively - one of them 60 - 0. They are now on target for the Semi Finals having topped their group stage. Year 10 student and full pack, Jinwoo (Jinu) Chun puts his thoughts into words for us “To start off with, I would like to say thank you to everyone supporting us at NLCS Jeju. It means a lot for us as a team and is definitely pushing us forward. For all of you in Jeju, our trip would have started from the 15 May, but for us it was a long journey starting in Years 9 and 10. Our team has players of different sizes and different abilities but we have all trained hard for months because of our passion for rugby - and our hard work is paying off. In contrast to the glorious victories at the moment, there have been hard moments for
us where tournaments were cancelled due to COVID, but these adversities only made us stronger and forced us to bond as a team for the love for the sport. Now that we have the chance to play, we will take advantage of this opportunity and we hope to make it to the finals and bring back a gold medal to our school.” -JinwooCoach, Mr Sebastien Crebier and his assistant, Mark Moss are also really enjoying their time at the tournament. They reflect on their story so far and remind us that the boys have won their group and go straight through to the semi finals on Sunday at 13.30. Please watch them and support HERE. “After months of preparations, it has been great to finally see the boy playing games. We believed, from our training, that this team had the potential to do well in any tournaments we entered but the nerves were still there on Friday evening waiting for our first game against Sadaebu. Personally, as a coach was looking forward to seeing our practice applied, so my key message to the players is focused on our process, rather than the final scoreline. In attack, we have asked the boys to be creative in the search for gaps, and space, to give us good go forward and in defense, we are searching physicality to force our opponents back and make mistakes. The players and coaches alike have been humbled by all the support from parents, students, and staff of NLCS Jeju and are driven on from the support at home.” Mark Moss, Assistant Coach
RUGBY TOURNAMENT
“As a coach, I look forward to these kinds of tournaments. COVID-19 has frustrated the players and the coaches, but for me, the rewards are here, participating in this Spring Season and seeing the boys playing. After months of training, time spent on the Astro with support from the older boys, which is important to the progress of the team, the boys can now express themself. We are delighted to be in the semi-finals. We have 1 day rest with plenty of prep time, then back to rugby and training for our match on Sunday!
North London Collegiate School Jeju
The support from the school, staff, students, parents, and friends has been immense, and let’s hope we can go bring that gold medal home and make our community proud! Thank you! In rugby, “ Mr. C. (Sebastien Crebier, Coach)
BOARDING Our boarders had a great weekend with our House teams organising trips out, activities such as Fingerprint Lab inside when rain stopped play. We also celebrated Teacher’s Day. This is, of course, on top of independent study, lots of sports and a full Bryant. Thank you to Mr. Brown and Ms. Torrance for these pictures!
MINSEO CHA ESSAY COMPETITION Minseo Cha, Year 12, has received acclaim for her essay skills. Minseo has forged links with embassies and other organisations and she drew on these recently in the 2nd Youth International Environmental Laws and Policies Essay Competition in April. She received the main award from the Korean Educational Association for Empowerment of Software and tells us “Although writing a 1500 word essay during my annual exam season seemed like a challenge and a burden, I decided to enter the competition as the environment, politics, and economics are all my passions. Out of the two essay prompts given, I chose to respond to the statement - “Choose an existing environmental policy, law, regulation, or agreement and analyze it for improvement.” I analysed and evaluated the Paris Agreement by taking a new approach to view international treaties on the climate crisis. The essays were judged based on criteria including the understanding of environmental policies and problem-solving skills. I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Maher and Mr. Hall for giving me thought-provoking comments upon reading my first draft that helped me to strengthen my points!” Thank you to Mr. Geoff Hall and Mr. Raymond Maher for advising and supporting Minseo - and to all our teachers who are always there to help every student in the classroom and beyond.
HOUSE POETRY Thank you to Grad, Emily Monaghan who shared some pictures of House Slam Poetry. There were impressive performances from each of the Houses of a selected piece of poetry, with topics ranging from being stuck in quarantine to WWI poetry. The pieces were accompanied by choreographed physical theatre movements that expressed the tone and meaning behind the poems. These pictures make us want to hear all the poems all over again. Well done to all students who contributed.
MATHS COMPETITION Congratulations to Sean Yoon (Year 12), Joshua Chang (Year 12), Daniel Yoo (Year 11), and Sarah Park (Year 11) who together formed a team to enter the international maths research competition IMMC. Sean Yoon tells us all about their success -
“Although our team had a frenetic Easter break preparing for the Year 12 Annuals and Year 11 IGCSEs, we also dedicated ourselves to the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IMMC) - an effort that ended up with great success as first place in South Korea. The IMMC, hosted by the consortium of Mathematics and its applications (COMAP), is the largest and one of the most prestigious Applied Mathematics competitions in the world. Each of the teams are required to write a 25 page formal report after constructing a mathematical model on a given topic, which is ranked in each country to choose two teams that will represent the country in the international round. This year, we had the honor of being awarded first place in South Korea, and have qualified to participate in the international round, where 45 different countries will also be competing. This is, in fact, our third year participating in the IMMC. Our first attempt ended with a dismal failure with three pages, let alone 25, but it inspired an interest in mathematical modelling and applied mathematics. The second year was much more successful, where we represented South Korea and won Honourable Mention, the third highest award in the international competition. This year, as feedback from the judges are mostly very positive, we are looking forward to receiving even better results in late July. To prepare for the competition, our team had analysed journals such as the Journal of SIAM or previous award-winning reports published by the IMMC or the HiMCM - a US version of the IMMC. We also read mathematical modelling-related books to stockpile knowledge on applied mathematics before the competition. Some of the members practiced mathematical writing and presentation during free time. Although our team is united with a common passion in mathematics, each has a specialty ranging from modelling, coding, and mathematical presentation - I believe this positive synergy between the members is what made this achievement possible. I would definitely recommend this competition to aspiring mathematicians in Year 9, 10, or 11, as it has not only developed my skills in Maths, but has also hugely enhanced my aptitude in mathematical writing and presentation. One piece of advice is that it is crucial for the team members to have a wide variety of skill sets to reap the benefits of collaboration. Also, it will be preferable to complete vast amounts of the task during the first few days, to prevent pulling all-nighters and “cramming.” On a final note, I thank my teammates for being cooperative and helpful despite my incessant obsession with details, and Ms. Minseo Cha for supporting us for three years.”
AN ARTIST IN THE MAKING Cindy (Seungbin) Min - Wellesley Cindy (Seungbin) Min has been offered a place at Wellesley College to read Studio Art for this Autumn. This prestigious school boasts a host of famous alumni including Hillary Rodham Clinton and it is a wonderful achievement to be offered a place. NLCS Jeju has an excellent record of sending students to the best Art institutions - with alumni past and present studying Visual Arts, Fine Arts, Architecture, Design. Each year Ms. Sharon Kennington and her team advise, guide and nurture the artistic talent within our students and we are developing a wonderful reputation in this field. Cindy has been at NLCS Jeju since Year 9. She came to us from several years spent living in the States - Michigan and California - plus several years in a Korean public school in Seoul. It was at NLCS Jeju where Cindy really found her passion for Art as she embarked on her IGCSE course. Cindy took Visual Arts at HL and cites her teachers’ help as a huge factor. “Ms. Kennington really inspired me. She became like a second mother to me. She really listens to our ideas and cares about what we do. Ms. Sloczynska was very supportive but she also let me weigh up all the factors myself and didn’t try to push me. I know I’ve done what’s right for me. “ Cindy is looking forward to being in Boston. She feels Wellesley offers a good intellectual challenge in a smaller college environment. The college and the course were much more important to her than chasing a big name. Her tips for aspiring artists in younger years “Choose a university that’s right for you. What is its value to you personally? Is the course something you will actually love? “ She adds “ In art it’s important to have a strong, personal vision and a coherent message. IB Visual Arts has helped me find my artistic identity. This is so important for now and for my future.”
BOOK FACE During Book Week, Head of Libraries, Ms. Hager Braham set up a green screen so students could give full rein to their imagination with Book Face! Students took up the challenge and found themselves in historical fiction, romance, science fiction and fantasy. Mr. James Tuffs provided the creative touch once the pictures were taken and we share a small selection here. The others will be on display in the library very soon.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD Mr Nicholas Chaddock has a message for all Years 9 - 11 who love a challenge! “We are now taking applications for the Duke of Edinburgh International Award 2021-22. All students in Year 9, 10 and 11 have received an invitation email. Year 10 and 11 students are able to apply for Direct Entry Silver, although all students with the Bronze certificate will get priority. If you think it is something you would like to do, then please do not hesitate in applying. Closing deadline is May 28. Here is a video of our Year 10s in action...”
SERVICE Thank you once more to our Junior School students. They have made an enormous commitment to Jenam Orphanage - in recognition of Children’s Day and Parent’s Day in May. These donation certificates show 4,115,550 KRW (Book Sale 2,816,550 KRW + Junior School Mufti Day 1,299,000 KRW) which is a huge achievement and all our students should be very proud.
LITTLE 8 Riwon (Emily) Hwang The first thing I wanted to accomplish as a member of the Little 8 was being a role model for the other students. The greater position I was in, the greater was the responsibility. It was like dyeing myself with different colours of new experiences being the Little 8. The more I stood up in front of the school, the more colours I had. This gave me more confidence, leadership, and courage to reach my legacy. We, the Little 8, contributed to making our school campus a more diverse society, tolerant for the newcomers, and much more. After this great opportunity, the reason for studying hard to help other people and the society was now more clear. This gave me the motivation to carry on even in the pandemic. I wish to leave a better, non-bullying, and diverse school for the students next year.
