IBVA ARTS SHOW STUDENTS AWARDS

6

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju This past week has seen so much celebration for our students, not least the Valedictory Celebration for our graduates on Saturday. As usual it is inspiring to see the selfless approach of some older students as they work with younger students as in the Junior School Arts celebrations this week and the Senior students in their preparations for next week’s Arts Festival. Well done to all the students in the Junior School along with their teachers who have put on fantastic displays this week. We are also delighted that we have the pre-arranged visits of so many alumni who have returned to assist and lead many performances. This has been a huge logistical challenge for our staff to ensure that the events can go ahead with fully acceptable COVID-19 precautions in place to keep our community safe. We wish all the hundreds of NLCS Jeju students who are performing next week every success. The Sports Department, following on from the Junior School’s successful Sports Days, are now preparing for the Senior School’s Sports Events which are spread over three sessions next week. It has been good to see the Houses actively preparing and training the students for the events. Next Friday at the final end of term assemblies we will be able to announce the House winner for 2020-21! Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

VALEDICTORY Last Saturday was a very big day for our Year 13 students as they closed their schooldays with the Valedictory ceremony. Thank you to Mr Simon Cox, AVP - Head of Sixth Form for hosting the afternoon which featured speeches and performances by the graduating class as well as photography, flowers, goodie bags and more. We were very sorry that we were unable to invite parents due to the COVID-19 precautionary measures we must abide by, but we livestreamed so all could enjoy. We say goodbye to our Class of 2021 and wish them all the very best in their futures and look forward to welcoming them all back as alumni!

IBVA ARTS SHOW Last Friday Ms Sharon Kennington and her Art team hosted a beautiful display of the work of the Year 13 artists. The students worked incredibly hard and produced pieces of work which could hold their own anywhere. Speeches and flowers were presented from and to both teachers and students before Principal, Ms Lynne Oldfield cut the ribbon and declared the exhibition open. Olivia Sung and Joohee Kim spoke on behalf of the students and their speech is a testament to a wonderful group of students and a relationship between students and teachers which has produced some incredible results “We are Olivia and Joohee and it is a great honour and privilege for us to deliver this speech on behalf of the year 13 art students.

IBVA ARTS SHOW Every time I stand in front of a blank canvas, I feel both intimidated by and invited to a new place I have yet to explore in the medium of art. Creating art always feels like being in a bubble detached from reality, with no restraints on what I can express. As Picasso said, “Art washes away the soul and dust of everyday life”, and it indeed does. The mixing of colours, blending hues on the canvas, and even something as simple as preparing a palette feels like a welcome departure from the many burdens of the IB program: an exciting journey I can partake in at any moment. For me, and I’m sure for other artists as well, art is a medium that lets us, at least for a moment, escape the stresses of reality and, as we explore different themes, colours and materials, begin to construct a new world on our canvas. Most of the time, our original vision rarely matches what the piece ultimately looks like. This shows how art isn’t simply about the end result, but also the continuous process of ideas, visual experimentations, and reviewing and refining. Throughout the two years of the Visual Arts course, we took care to methodically build upon our themes to carefully construct a curation that best delivers our ideas to the audience. Every piece you see in this exhibition has hidden meanings and imagery. Thus, to fully enjoy the show, feel free to ask the artists about the process of their creation. We also recommend that you think over your own interpretations of the artworks first and share it with the artist because the value of art is as much dependent on the eye of the beholder as is the intentions of the artist. We would like to acknowledge the efforts of not only the artists but also the teachers and staff members. So many of them put extra effort and gave up their time to ensure that we could achieve our maximum potential for the exhibition. We are extremely grateful to have the teachers truly care about us and what we do.

Ms Kennington

Even when Ms Kennington had to go back to the UK, she scheduled tutorials with every one of us to make sure that we complete our course; even if it meant that she had to flip her whole sleep schedule around. We admire and deeply appreciate the dedication and patience she had throughout the 2 years. We love you! We thank Mr Davidson and special thanks to Mr Tim Draper, who worked endlessly to put up the show, gifting brownies to Ms Kennington to keep her sane during tough times. We would also like to thank Ms Donaldson for helping us put together the show, being an idea bank, helping with digital works, and chasing us around. Thank you Mr Tamlyn. Thank you to Dex and Chris for helping with the lighting and the music. Thanks to Ms Forster and Mr Lock for coordinating the exhibition. The works that are in the exhibition are the results of our hard work during the 2 years of the IB course. Tonight, as we present this show, we invite you to this world that we created on our canvas. We hope that it could wash away the dust of reality. “

ARTS WEEK PREVIEW We are extremely excited about Arts Week which begins tomorrow and involves almost all our students and staff as performers, audience, organisers and more. This is our tenth year of Arts Week and the theme this year - Our Journey - reflects how far we have come. Students have been working on their projects for months and we have been lucky to have alumni performers return and help the current students - remembering, as they do, a time when they, too, were students. We also have had the input of professionals via Zoom and other online platforms and also parents have contributed their ideas and professional expertise. Venues will include our PAC, the Auditoriums and outdoor and indoor specialist setups. We have some very unique installations and performances to look forward to. AVP - Head of Arts, Mr Neil Tamlyn says “We are an exceptional School with some very, very talented students. We - you - are extraordinary and we can’t wait to see you perform. The atmosphere is not to be missed and even with restrictions and guidelines we know it will be very special. We encourage you to watch via Livestream if you can’t be with us. Thank you to all our community for their support, enthusiasm and passion.”

Behind The Scenes We thank the amazing teams who have helped ensure that Arts Week goes ahead. We are as always, grateful to the commitment of all our Arts teachers - Drama, Dance, Music and Visual Arts. They work tirelessly to support all our performers both in School and outside the curriculum. Many other teachers also volunteer to help and support with costumes, design, rehearsals, direction and more. Mr James Tuffs and his dedicated student crews race around School all week ensuring that everything is recorded via Livestream, edited and shared. Mr Dex Masrey and Mr Christopher Chang are our tech wizards - running not just the PAC but every venue without them the show could not go on so well! Thank you all.

BOARDING STORIES Noro Boys Cooking Residential Assistant, Ms Miri Kang ran a version of MasterChef in Noro last weekend with 2 teams of 4 boys. They were asked to choose one variation of tteokbokki from spicy classic and creamy rosé. Very basic instructions and ingredients were given to boys; rest was up to each team. After Mr. Ramsey, Sunghyun, and Yr 9 Hua joined as hungry judges, the spicy classic tteokbokki team won. Ms Kang says “I couldn’t believe that most of them came with limited cooking experience (only having cooked instant ramen at home! ) because they seemed so skilled at every step of the cooking process. What left a deep impression on me, though, was their excellent team spirit, a sense of responsibility, and their unforgettable sense of humour!”

Noro Boys Camping Mr Daniel Long, Noro HM organised a wonderful camping trip for a small group of boarders this weekend. The lucky group cycled to Hyeopjae (15km downhill) and set up camp. The boys put up their own tents, organised the area and made themselves comfortable. They had a great time playing games on the beach, made a fire, cooked food and just had a lovely time. Mr Long says - “ The cycle back (15km) on Sunday was challenging for some but the ice cream at the finish made it more than worthwhile. Next time, I know lots more of our students will want to come!”

JUNIOR SCHOOL - TES TARGET4GREEN ONLINE SYMPOSIUM On Friday 4 June, the Junior School Eco Ambassadors took part in the Beyond COP21 Online Symposium, hosted by Taipei European School. The students participated in presentations and workshops aimed at discussing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and what students can do to achieve these locally. Guest keynote speakers were Solene Cornilleau (French founder of Concrete Garden) and Adrian Hayes (British explorer and adventurer). A lot of ideas for personal, schoolwide and community changes were discussed to help ensure that we can work together to help solve the global issues threatening our planet. Next year’s Eco Ambassadors will have a lot more projects for our School to participate in, we are sure! Thank you to Ms Vivienne Brooks for sharing this information.

STUDENT COUNCIL As we approach the end of the academic year our Student Council have a message for all students Dear NLCS Jeju Community, Why does it always feel as if change is in the air? Luckily, the Student Council has been incredibly busy this year meeting each week after school to discuss the most pressing issues and deciding on the best ways that we could gather feedback from our fellow students. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for participating in the surveys that we have conducted, especially as we have taken your feedback to the Senior Leadership Team and raised your concerns. Of course the opinions of students are important and Mr Waterson and Ms Oldfield have listened to your points and used them to inform their final decisions. Although the school reserves the right to make the final decision, we have been very pleased with how well the school has listened to our concerns. We have met with both Mr Waterson and Ms Oldfield to discuss issues relating to: school facilities, the impact of COVID-19, Changes to the Dining Hall and how lockers will be used in the future. We would like to especially thank Mr Waterson for attending a recent meeting where we grilled him for 45 minutes on the changes to the boarding system and the timetable and hope that he will indeed return! In the near future, we will dedicate our time to carrying out various actions including providing sanitary products in the girl’s bathrooms, holding campaigns and providing incentives to promote the usage of bikes/buses, and help the school consider what it can do to ensure a smooth and satisfactory transition into the potential locker system change and much more. As the end of the academic year approaches, we sincerely hope that each member of the NLCS Jeju Community will take the time to say farewell to any leaving students or staff. We thank you for all of your support this year. Enjoy the summer break!

MINSEO CHA JEJU STUDENT DIPLOMAT Editor of Sustainability, Minseo Cha has been elected as a Jeju Student Diplomat recommended by the Principal through Ms Katrina Daniels-Samasa. She tells us “About 40 students from schools in Jeju who are diligent, proactive, highly responsible, have service spirit, and are likely to become talented global citizens have been selected as student diplomats by recommendation and submitting an essay about Image building and the role of diplomats in branding Korea. (There was a more complicated application process for schools with more than one applicant, but the four international schools could only recommend one student.) The aim and role of the Jeju Student Diplomat Project are to - Develop awareness, understanding, and ideas to solve global challenges - Develop proactive mindset and leadership - Promote the culture and history of Jeju and South Korea to people, especially teenagers, around the globe - Participate in the Jeju Youth Forum and its panel discussion as the Jeju representative and organise and support the event - Create a culture promotion video of Jeju

MINSEO CHA JEJU STUDENT DIPLOMAT I would like to express my gratitude to Ms Daniels-Samasa for recommending me to the Jeju Student Diplomat Project and helping me to further develop my passion in global politics and diplomacy as always. “ We can’t wait to see the video and hear more about this. Please let us know if YOU have a story to tell about your work for Jeju, Korea or the world!

LUCIDITY MAGAZINE As we come to the end of the School year magazines are handing over to new editors and saying goodbye to old. We have marvelled all year at the work of the Lucidity team led by Year 12 students Minseo Cha and Sean Yoon. They are now handing over to students Chandler Ahn and Remy Lee who are both in Year 9. They have shared their future vision for the magazine - acknowledging the founding editors, then Minseo and Sean and looking forward to stamping their own mark on the magazine. We’ll be sharing new issues all year. “Ever since its first appearance in 2017, LUCIDITY magazine has been carved in every facet by its predecessors. Ihyun’s LUCIDITY was a forum for the exchange of knowledge and promotion of the sciences. Minseo believed in providing insights into the future world to NLCS students, and Sean sought to storm into the grey area between STEM and humanities and render it accessible to the masses. Each generation of editor-in-chiefs have cemented LUCIDITY’s place within the school community through their contributions, and our shared belief in nurturing critical wisdom through a cosmopolitan appreciation of the sciences have shaped LUCIDITY into the magazine it is today.

Never before in the history of human existence has science given us a better understanding of the world that we live in. Here at LUCIDITY, we are dedicated to promoting an on-theground approach to the sciences through journalism. How we choose to deliver that vision has evolved along with the quotidian breakthroughs of our discipline, but our mission to help foster a scientific understanding of the world has remained constant. As LUCIDITY’s third generation of editor-in-chiefs, we aspire to uphold LUCIDITY’s vision as the official STEM magazine of NLCS Jeju and bring our own two pennyworths to the school’s scientific community. Ihyun and Hyunjin made it - Sean and Minseo transformed it - now it’s our turn to revolutionize it. We look forward to hearing from you and please do keep an eye out for further updates! “

ISLANDER The new issue of Islander is here. The student writers have produced a marvellous issue on the theme Forward Thinking. Features span a myriad of subjects including COVID-19 (of course). Interviews with alumni, sports, Spotify in South Korea, cities and societies. Make some time this weekend to read! https://issuu.com/nlcsjeju/docs/islander_issue_27_r?fr=sNDUyOTM3OTY2NTY

MUFTI DAYS We have a special triple length Mufti Day in Senior School next week! Bring in 4,000 KRW and wear your own clothes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There are four charities who will benefit from this initiative - The Architecture Society, Supplies With Hope, Aspirin, Amnesty International.

Have fun everyone!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT We are very proud of all our teachers who continue to learn, train and develop as teachers as they handle teaching, marking, planning and a million and one other daily tasks. We will be updating you on the vast breadth of knowledge contained in our departments. Congratulations to Mr Nicholas Chaddock who has passed his National Professional Qualification in Middle Leadership through NPQ Online and the UK Department of Education. Mr Chaddock tells us I believe an outstanding leader simply allows teachers to do their job to the best of their ability. They share their vision and manage to get the best out of their team in terms of achievement for the students. It is important that a team leader communicates well with their team and that the whole team shares a sense of purpose. I have learnt that when leading a team, it is important that my team knows that I do not know all the answers and that I need their help in order to be successful. This develops a very strong feeling of collegiality, but it must begin with recognition of individual talents and strengths, which means a leader needs to know their team well. I believe good leadership starts by building real relationships with the people you are working with. I emphasise the word ‘real’, as I view bad leadership in terms of degrees of false face and lack of genuine care for the people you should be there to inspire, motivate and listen to.

Every conversation or email matters. Every word in the conversation or email matters. Every facial expression. Every greeting. Every day. Having a bad day? It does not matter, as your team and your relationship with them matters more. Only by building and sustaining a genuine relationship with people can you really achieve great leadership. When a leader says ‘Hi, how are you?’ – do they really care? If not, staff will know over time and the ability to lead diminishes. One of my favourite quotes on leadership is from an American pastor. He said ‘Leaders who don’t listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say.’

Mr Nicholas Chaddock

LITTLE 8 Minjae Park “The three main events I participated in as a Little 8 member were the Founder’s Day event, leading an induction programme for our new students in 6IJ and participating in assemblies. I enjoyed the Founder’s Day event personally, because I could stand up in front of a large crowd and make a speech. I was a bit nervous, but I felt proud after doing it. Next, I liked the induction programme (which was Jaden’s idea!) that we made for the new students. It was great to welcome the new students and show them the school facilities. I liked the idea because we could get closer with the new pupils quickly. I also liked participating in assemblies. I’ve never imagined standing in front of the audience and speaking but I have managed to do it after being a Little 8! In one of the assemblies the Little 8 got to introduce themselves to the year groups. I was proud of myself that most of the Junior School members knew me. I like being a member of the Little 8 because I can represent NLCS Jeju and leave a legacy behind in the Junior School.”

YEAR 8 ASSEMBLY P4G SEOUL SUMMIT Year 8 girls, Kellyn and Rosa participated in the P4G Seoul Summit last week and shared their precious experience of it with other students. They also suggested ways how Year 8 students can be more conscientious about the environment. You can check their presentation and more photos of events HERE. Mr Karamalla encouraged them to take a more proactive role in promoting environmental issues in the school and year group. Well done and keep up the good work!

ALUMNI STORY Continuing our series of alumni stories - meet Jongguk Kim - Class of 2015. He tells us about his journey “I studied BSc Politics and International Relations at LSE in London, UK. Initially, I simply wanted to work in international organisations. After all, it did give an insight into the roles of organisations and how they work in the international arena. It wasn’t like what I thought they would be. Yet, although I no longer consider working in such areas as my dream job, I still feel that it was a great choice to take this particular course as now I am able to see the broader picture of how the world works. To be more specific, how international and domestic politics work, and the interactions between the two, and their implications to our daily life. LSE is located at the very centre of London. It means that property prices are extremely expensive. Thus, you should not expect there to be much space. Lecture halls, classrooms, dining facilities and libraries are packed in a single block. It has really decent restaurants and cafes around it, as well as art galleries and museums. Central London has plenty of places to visit and enjoy so the size of the campus wasn’t really a big problem to me. Also, LSE provides world-class guest lectures, inviting various public figures. I once had a chance to attend a lecture inside the Parliament building where one of the ministers gave a special lecture about the British welfare system to LSE politics department students.

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Currently, I am doing my compulsory military service as an interpreting officer. I provide translation and interpretation support in various meetings between the ROK and US militaries. Through this experience, I was able to witness leadership-level decision making and negotiation processes at the international level, and have learnt a lot of things from it. Since I still have a year left until the discharge, I am considering various options regarding my career. The most memorable moment at NLCS Jeju would be when I went up to the stage to sing ‘Don’t look back in anger’ by Oasis during the acoustic night event. Students who sang during those events went up to the stage because they were good at singing but I wasn’t one of them. At the time, I simply thought that this might be the last chance where I could sing in front of hundreds of people. Although the crowd seemed quite surprised by my awful voice, I really enjoyed it and had so much fun. “
