ARTS WEEK
YEAR 6 GRADUATION
6
A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju What a way to end the year with an Arts Festival which brought our community together and really was special as this year we celebrated our tenth Arts Festival with an eclectic range of events - and despite COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines - we have made it outstanding. Congratulations and thanks to all the performers, directors, visiting artists and backstage crew. It has been delightful to have visiting alumni who have contributed so much to the Festival both in terms of performing and working with students in a variety of workshops. A special thanks is due to Mr and Mrs Kim - the parents of Yoon Sang Kim who provided a fantastic light show which opened the Arts Festival last Saturday evening. For the Boarders and staff who were able to be present for our opening ceremony this was an experience like no other as Geomun was lit up to show our Journey of the last ten years which was the theme of the Festival. There have been so many outstanding and creative performances this year and I encourage you all to view the range of the events which we live streamed on our YouTube channel. Some of these were linked to the Junior School’s arts week last week and so it has been great to see students from Senior School collaborating with Junior School students
We have also been able this week to celebrate Sports Days on three occasions with different year groups across the Senior School. Thanks go to all the teachers and support staff who organised these events and ensured that the final points for House competitions could be awarded. The winning house this year: Junior School - Baek Ho Senior School - Geomun The week has come to a close with many celebration assemblies across the school. As usual we are celebrating the plethora of achievements and successes of students at NLCS Jeju, with colours being awarded too. Congratulations to all our students, faculty and support staff for their tremendous efforts this year. As usual at this time of year is also tinged with sadness as we say goodbye to some students: our graduates of 2021, as well as a small number of students across the school and also some of our faculty who are moving onto new climes. We wish you all success, health and happiness. It also remains for me to wish our whole community a well earned rest and a relaxing summer holiday with the opportunity, perhaps to try new challenges and to spend time catching up with families. Please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back in August. Your sincerely,
Lynne Oldfield Principal

OPENING CEREMONY We are in awe of the light show which formed the centrepiece of the Opening Ceremony. After three performances - Presto Strings, Drumline and a traditional performance of Arirang - and a speech from ex Big Six member, Stefano Hyun - it was time for the main event.

Mr Hyungsu Kim and Mrs Hyo Jin Kim - parents of departing Year 13 student, Yoon Sang Kim - created a show which drew gasps and shouts of excitement and astonishment throughout the ten minutes of projection onto Geomun House. The show acknowledged our history and our future as a School. It referenced our Houses and our sister schools and it also namechecked all our Class of 2021. This was spectacular in every way from the effects, the colours and the original music. Mr and Mrs Kim would like to acknowledge a student Daeyoung Kim who gave huge help including the Tetris and the Super Mario-inspired pieces. Take a look HERE if you missed it.
FANTASY FASHION SHOW On Saturday, Mr Stephen Davidson and a team of students created amazing fantasy fashion outfits and staged and choreographed a catwalk show featuring students.

HIP HOP NIGHT This was, deservedly, one of the most popular events of the week with lots of brilliant student performances and input from alumni. The Boys School was staged differently this year with the audience seated rather than standing and crowding round. The energy was just amazing!

Huge thanks to Ms Cristyn Draper - Head of Music and Ms Krista Merrill - Head of Art. for driving the week with such enthusiasm. All the teachers in Junior School contributed enormously and we thank them all, too. We were very lucky to have several visiting artists and alumni share their talents this week. THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE EXHIBITION We hope you had a chance to see the Theory of Knowledge exhibition situated outside of the library in the Senior School. The Theory of Knowledge is integral to the IB Diploma Programme and really stretches all our Sixth Form students. The ToK team - Mr Alex Schwarz, Mr Nick Canning, Mr Michael Dillon, Mr Ben Matthews and Mr James Tuffs - tell us what the exhibition signifies. “For their Internal Assessment, students must curate a gallery of three objects in response to a knowledge question, providing a written response to how these objects offer a response to this question. Students might be given any number of tasks: - Challenging the ideas presented by the student work. - Considering objects of their own in response to the knowledge questions posed. - For objects or images with no explanations, only questions, they might try to form an explanation of how the object or image could link to the question. We hope you enjoyed the exhibition and if you’d like to know more about ToK or the new ToK Internal Assessment, please do not hesitate to contact a ToK team member. “
BOARDING STORY YEAR 8 Jaehoon Roy Song We thank boarder, Jaehoon (Roy) Song in Year 8 for his candid and personal take on the previous school year, and his hopes for next year. “Despite the anxiety and tension caused by the global pandemic, we were excited about our new year at school as we began to live in Houses on Aug 20, 2020. However, we witnessed several COVID-19 cases from nearby schools and places which made us worried. Fortunately, there were zero COVID-19 cases in all of our Houses Geomun, Noro, Sarah, Mulchat, Jeoji, and Halla - thanks to students, HMs, AHMs, and Gap/ Grad assistants following strict sanitation and health regulations. Despite the pandemic, various activities and House competitions were successfully carried out under the leadership of House captains. Thanks to these activities, we learned teamwork, felt a sense of pride, became healthy with boosted energy and had fun. On top of online classes, the school also provided us with offline classes, which allowed us to study face to face and resolve frustration caused by limited exeats due to COVID-19. Not only that, we were able to learn and study in a self-directed manner without falling behind with the kind consideration of HMs and AHMs, and Gap assistants. The upcoming school year (2021 - 2022) will mark the 10th anniversary of NLCS Jeju and we face some changes with a restructure of Houses. Some students will have to say goodbye to their friends, places, and teachers that they have known for at least a year or more. Some students are also worried that they will have to face new environments as the boarding system will be separated into Houses - which we have pride in - and Boarding Homes, which will be named soon. The house captains and House teachers had discussions on this and talked with House students to find out what they thought about this new concept of Boarding Homes. The school promised us that the new House system would allow us a more developed, pleasant, autonomous environment for immersive learning. As I look back on the past year as a Geomun House student, I am reminded of the various people and events that I have encountered at Geomun • Experimental cooking activities with the gentle and charismatic Mr. Thomas Perry! • Mr. Andy Cronin, who is energetic and always has good vibes. • Daisy, the shy yet active bulldog I used to take on walks. • Shaun, our Gap assistant and aspiring law student who was always kind and helped me with my studies. • Mark, our Grad who helped fuel my passion for rugby. • My roommates whom I used to sometimes squabble with and talk until we fell asleep at night and, • Last but not least, upper classmates who feel like family. I wish we spent more time getting to know each other better. I am going to miss you all.
With all these good memories, NLCS Jeju Boarding Houses, which have produced great graduates for the last decade, has embarked on a new journey as NLCS Jeju Boarding Homes, based on the rich experience of boarding systems of the U.K. I am very much looking forward to the new school year, and I would like to meet my new Boarding Home friends soon. I hope you are also excited about the upcoming decade of the new NLCS Jeju Boarding Homes. “

STUDENT COUNCIL Thank you to the Student Council for providing us with an update of their activities. “On Friday the June 11 , the Student Council met with Principal, Ms Lynne Oldfield to give her an overview of the changes that have taken place in the Council this year and provided an update on the projects initiated by our different sub-committees. As well as discussing issues of importance, the Student Council has shifted its focus to coming up with solutions to school-wide issues (gathered by tutor representatives). This enabled the Student Representatives to have practical discussions to solve the problems. The Student Council is committed to keeping the student body informed and the Publicity Committee has helped to promote the work done in the Student Council. They will also continue to bring attention to the changes happening around the school and ensure that a clear rationale is shared with students. The Action Committee was very proactive this year in initiating projects such as prospective outdoor facilities. Next year, their main focus will be on the traffic campaign to raise more awareness of the environment and we will be looking at ways that we can encourage students to walk or ride bikes to school. The Food Committee have analysed the food survey and represented the views of students in Food Committee meetings with the School Leadership Team and Parents. In the future, they will continue collaborating with Quadra in order to bring a better experience for the students. Keen to make the most of our time with Ms Oldfield, we submitted a few questions in advance such as how will key changes be communicated to students next year and what impact does the school envision that these changes will have. Ms Oldfield commented that it was essential that we would update students regarding the key changes in August and that a number of changes such as those to the school timetable will have a positive impact in terms of creating more flexibility within the school curriculum and will only enhance our school experience. “

MUSIC ONLINE MUSIC COLLABORATION PROJECT - ALL NIGHT LONG After the success of last year’s project, SUNNY, over the past year students and staff from NLCS Jeju, Singapore and London have been slowly putting together a recording of Lionel Richie’s ‘All Night Long’, a challenging and fun song. The music arranging and recording process started in term 1 and has lasted all year with recordings taking place in 4 different countries and all areas of our school. In May 2021 our students had the chance to meet (virtually) with world famous jazz musician, Gerard Presencer. Gerard discussed his solo and gave the students some ideas as to how he approached the song. Gerard is featured on this project which I am sure will be a thrill for everyone involved. We were very happy to have some contributions from our London and Singapore schools. We hope you enjoy the project. A huge credit goes to DJ Baik in Year 10 for putting together such a stunning and professional video. Click on the link HERE, sit back and enjoy!
