28 August, 2020 News from NLCS Jeju
WELCOME TO OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju
North London Collegiate School Jeju
The term may have just started but already the school is as busy and vibrant as ever with students actively engaged in many activities and learning. However I would like to draw your attention to some matters. COVID-19 Precautions We are all aware of the growing challenges we face in South Korea due to the increased cases on a daily basis. Therefore the school has had to take additional steps to keep our community safe : All parents events are now online. We are live streaming all our information sessions, Meet the Teachers and so forth. Previously we allowed certain events which were heavily controlled to take place allowing parents access to the PAC with heightened precautions. However we have decided that we now will ensure all meetings will continue but on line or through live streaming. Within school we have had to restrict further groups of students coming together for prolonged periods of time, such as in examination halls. All assessment now takes place within the class situation as part of continuous assessment to allow time to allow for more emphasis on teaching and meeting curriculum requirements. Parents and students are strongly advised to ensure that students do not leave the island either as day students or as boarders for exeat weekends. All travel movements off the Island must be reported on the travel survey and the School retains the right to insist on a negative COVID-19 test before re-admittance to School. Student Voice Student Voice is very important to us and there are many platforms through which students can voice their opinions and comments. These include via the Big Eight, School Council, Year Councils and House Councils. Student opinions are canvassed on many issues and one group is focused currently on gender equality. However for many students ‘Food’ is a key issue. We have a new catering company, Quadra, in the Senior School now and students have many opinions on their performance and menus. The key thing is that the opinions considered are across the spectrum. Quadra have already responded to student comments and provided additional choices. Over the next few weeks the various Councils will be meeting and so students should address their opinions to them as they will be liaising directly with the caterers. The Junior School also has the opportunity to do the same through their Student Voice. Emergency Messages As Wednesday demonstrated we are in ‘Typhoon Season’ and so I urge you to check regularly our Parent Portal isams, SMS and emails, as well as the School website in case of important messages, possibly pertaining to campus closure due to typhoons or COVID-19. Whenever the campus is closed the School will continue to provide online and virtual learning and will keep you fully informed. I hope that you stay safe and healthy over the coming week. If you have a concern or require any information regarding your son or daughter, as always, contact their tutor or class teacher in the first instance. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

Typhoon
Typhoon Our students were back to Online Learning on Wednesday as we closed under guidance as Typhoon Bavi swept through Jeju. Our students were all set a full programme of learning according to their normal timetable and they all logged in for 08.10 to start the school day in the Google Classroom. Day students worked from home and in all the boarding Houses our students were supported by the House teams. And all were able to study in the fully appointed computer rooms, in other communal areas or in their bedroom/studies. HMs and AHMs ensured that they got rest and ate properly between lessons. Ms. Katie de Carteret, HM of Mulchat Girls summed it up “Ms Stevens and I were so impressed with the Mulchat boarder girls during Typhoon day. All of them were actively involved in their Google Meets and industriously working on the activities, questions, assignments and presentations that were requested of them. From the younger girls who worked in the iMac suites to the older girls who worked on their own laptops in their own rooms, everyone was engaged and focussed throughout the day. Typhoon Day learning success! Thank you to all our students for working so hard and all our teachers for supporting them.

As well as settling back into school life they were making new friends and having lots of fun in the Houses. Our Housemasters and Housemistresses and their Assistants organised games, competitions, trips out and BBQs as well as loads more fun activities. We are sharing just a few images here. Sean Yoon SCHOOL CALENDAR Calendar
This year we have produced a printed calendar for all our community. It has images of life around School and we hope you all love it and find it useful. Day students should have brought home the calendar this week. Boarders should have the calendar in their rooms. Please let us know if you have not received your calendar and we will send one out to you. Marketing@nlcsjeju.kr

Lucidity - The Contagion Issue
Student Publicatioins
There have been some exceptional student-led magazines recently and 20 - 21 looks like it will be even better. Minseo Cha and Sean Yoon have been working with their teams on Lucidity - the science magazine. They tell us - “The latest issue of Lucidity contains a unique exploration of a singular concept: Science and Contagion. Writers from three different schools and ten NLCS Jeju societies have shared expertise and insights on the COVID-19 crisis through both a scientific and humanity-related lens.
Thanks to all the contributors and Ms Prichard for their support of Lucidity and its mission: to make STEM more accessible and enjoyable for anyone. Lucidity will continue to be your guide into the intriguing world of STEM this year!" Read the latest issue HERE

Sports
Sports Tryouts It’s a wonderful time of year when all our students get the opportunity to try out and commit to Sports teams and squads for the year. Football, Netball, Swimming and Badminton have been attracting huge interest across the whole school. Our new Director of Sport, Glenn Roberts describes the excitement. “NLCS Jeju Sport held the first trials for their squads on the first Saturday of the academic year. It proved to be a success with over 200 students attending to try out for their favourite sport. It provided a vibrant and energetic morning of sporting activities with students demonstrating talent, ability and determination; which was fantastic to witness.” Trials and tryouts continued through the week to give everyone a chance. If you have any questions contact the Sports Dept.

Alumni
A Visit From Our New Alumni It’s always a joy to hear that alumni have come back to visit. Two of our Class of 2020 returned last week to catch up with their teachers and share news. Si Hyun Kim is one of three students who scored a perfect 45 in the IBDP. Modestly he puts this down to “luck”. He will now go to study Engineering at Homerton College, Cambridge. He will be in good company as we had 9 offers of places at Cambridge this year and at this point in time at least 5 students are determined to take them up. Si Hyun says “Enjoy your life and don’t just focus on grades…” His friend, Tae Il Jeong will go to University College, London to study Maths with Statistics. He was one of the 51% of students scoring over 40 points in the IB. He, too, urges students to a broader focus - “Enjoy your life. Do what you want and you can succeed.” They both agree that it is meaningful to be an NLCS Jeju alumni and we look forward to seeing them both at alumni events in the future.
Ihyun Nam - Presidential Scholarship Last year we shared with you many stories of university offers and acceptances in our Class of 2020. Over the Summer we heard about many more and we will share these with you over the next few weeks. Ihyun Nam has received The Presidential Science Scholarship (대통령과학장학금) - granted by the Korea Student Aid Foundation ( 한국장학재단) run by the Korean Government. She was selected as one of the 20 (approx) High School Seniors with Korean citizenship who will be studying STEM abroad. Ihyun will receive a full scholarship for all 4 years of college (50,000 USD per year, 200,000 USD in total) to study Mathematics at Stanford, US. Ihyun offers some excellent advice to students in school now who may think their dreams may never happen! “I’m beyond grateful and humbled to receive this scholarship. I thank my country for investing in my future and will make it worthwhile. The Presidential Science Scholarship is the 4th scholarship I’ve applied to since Middle School. I failed to get the 1st one, failed to get the 2nd one, and failed yet again to get the 3rd one. But I kept trying and finally received the final and the biggest scholarship I’ve applied to. Never give up until you make it!”

Societies
Korean History Exhibition So many things happened at the end of last term we couldn’t cover them all.We wanted to acknowledge the hard work of Amy (Yurim) Nam from Year 10 and her team in the Centuries Enterprise who ran the Korean History Exhibition on Korean heroism in the Japanese colonial era. The Society organised a trip to Harbin to see the prisons and other historical sites and followed up with an exhibition outside the Senior School Library where they gave guided explanations to staff and students bringing history to life. We look forward to more from this society and many others this year.
