North London Collegiate School Jeju

WELCOME TO OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju

NLCS Jeju is justifiably proud of our students and their achievements. Their achievements are wide ranging and they develop as well rounded outstanding individuals who are well regarded around the world as seen in the vast array of offers our year 13 students receive at the world’s prestigious universities. Academic excellence is at the core of their achievements and our class of 2020 should be congratulated. Below you will find out more about these remarkable young people in terms of their performances in the IB Diploma Programme and their university destinations. A small number of them have deferred entry to university due to COVID-19 and are looking again at where they want to go for their further studies or are undertaking their military service this year. The journey at NLCS Jeju begins from the moment a student arrives with us. We are also pleased to note that the achievements of our boarding students are particularly remarkable and reflect the enhanced experience of boarding. The three students who achieved the perfect score of 45 spent the majority of their time with us in boarding. I wish you a safe and happy weekend. As always - please keep checking your isams messages and emails for any developments at School. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

UPDATE Campus will open as normal for ALL students on Monday 7 September. All our stringent checks and precautions will be in place to keep our whole community safe and healthy as we return to a full in School programme

IBDP Results NLCS Jeju has a well deserved reputation for outstanding academic success and we are very proud of the exceptional results we achieve each year. This year our IBDP results have surpassed all expectations, especially given the extraordinary times that we have lived through as a result of COVID-19. Our students have shown resilience and positivity through the changes and uncertainty. The IBDP is marked out of 45 and, aside from some language components, is assessed in English - as our students are almost all native Korean speakers this is a true testament to their hard work. Our average score was 39 which is far in excess of the global average of 30. This is higher than all other Korean schools (as far as we know) and is exceptional on the world stage. 51% of students scored over 40 and three of our students scored the perfect 45. IBDP Coordinator, Justine Oliver says “ This year’s truly outstanding DP results are testament to our students’ hard work and talents. Just as importantly, they demonstrate how our Class of 2020 embodies the qualities of the IB Learner Profile. We are exceptionally proud of these fine young people who epitomise knowledgeable, caring and open-minded global citizens. ”

Academic Standards in the Junior School VP - Head of Juniors, Jeremy Freeman and Stewart Smith, AVP - Academic explain the secret to academic success in the Junior School. The Junior School at NLCS Jeju is recognized worldwide as a school for academic excellence; this was confirmed in our last NLCS London inspection. However as with all world class schools, we continue to implement changes, adapt to student needs and review our curriculum in order to ensure every child achieves outstanding academic progress. This year we have identified Academic English as a priority particularly in Years 5 & 6, in order to ensure a smoother transition into the Senior School and to enable all of our students the challenge of accessing a high level subject specific, knowledge rich curriculum. We have identified a need to offer greater support to some of our students with Individual Needs, and we are giving further EAL support to students for whom the understanding or speaking of English is relatively new or causing a barrier to their progress. The Junior School is committed to stretching all students and we do this by ensuring our teachers deliver outstanding lessons, monitoring each child’s progress closely in line with our standards of achievement in each subject. Beginning in Reception class, we set high standards of learning for our youngest children, as part of their overall emotional and physical development. We begin to add subject specialist teaching, in PE, Dance, Swimming and languages. By Year 5 and 6 we are in full subject specialist mode for every subject. Students are challenged far beyond the levels of other elementary age schools. We feedback to parents 4 times per year as a minimum, two full report cards and two face to face meetings. A mixture of formative and summative assessments are used to track progress and to inform planning across year groups. Our unique educational model includes subject heads of department ensuring outstanding teaching, learning and student progress in their own subjects across the Junior School. We expect our students to use English as their language of learning and play at all times, except in Korean or Mandarin classes. As a Junior School we prioritise extending our students vocabulary; understanding more advanced English language and setting high literacy standards across the school. Standardised testing has shown our children are well ahead of their peers worldwide in their attainment across English and Maths. Our focus on English also means they are absolutely ready for the challenges of Senior School and a seamless transition.
