PRINCIPAL’S LETTER
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju
North London Collegiate School Jeju is once more recognised as a school which has so many opportunities for every individual to play a part, discover their passions and also serve others through long sustained periods of service which may benefit local communities or further afield.
We are now seeing more sports competitions being opened up not just within the Republic of Korea. We have students taking part in these competitions as individuals and as part of a team. This requires dedication and effort to develop the skills and expertise over months and years. This is true too with what we see from the inspirational music recitals which happen, such as the Year 10 Music IGCSE recital this week. Likewise with service commitments, it is over long periods of time and as a School we have supported and worked with communities for years. Students too have contributed to these long term commitments. I see this too in the growth and development of the academic societies we have in school, where students are members of these for long periods of time prior to taking on leadership roles such as the Chair of the society. This all shows commitment and is to be welcomed and encouraged. This is in contrast to a student who has a scattergun approach and takes part in little competitions which they prepare for over a short period in the hope of recognition rather than a commitment to service. The value of these competitions is limited and is viewed as such in the wider community. The school will always encourage and support participation and welcome success in the worthwhile which are testament to a valued commitment.
This newsletter celebrates the successes of students but also their commitment as well as the responsibilities they show as members of a community. I, like all our community, are looking forward to Wednesday when we see the culmination of the efforts of all the Senior students in the House Music Competition with House singing, and Glee performances as well as the ensemble performances. We will be in for a real treat: emotional and energy charged!.
Your sincerely, Lynne Oldfield PrincipalThe Main Event

Other newsEVEREST FOR EDUCATION
We are privileged to live in South Korea, a country that the United Nations (UN) ranks first globally for girls’ education. UN statistics show that if you educate girls, they help educate the next generation, they give back to the community, and they take local action on global issues like climate change.
Many countries worldwide struggle to provide this level of access to education, with female illiteracy rates as high as 70 percent in many developing countries.
At NLCS Jeju we believe in the child’s right to an education and are continuing to take action to support this.
We are partnering with Education For All (EFA) and local communities in Morocco. They build and run fully-equipped, safe girls boarding houses near to secondary schools: therefore, allowing over 200 girls from remote mountainous villages access to education. The local communities have also benefited as EFA has worked with village elders to set up a refuge and recycling service, an ambulance service and hearse (culturally important for religious reasons), and also worked to connect remote areas to renewable electricity supplies.
Khadija, one of the original 10 students when the first house opened in 2007, has now graduated from university and become a teacher. She told NLCS Jeju,

“It was an amazing experience and am glad that I have had this chance. Being educated was always a dream for me, a dream that came true. But becoming a teacher was just impossible - even in the dream… …But here I am! And I feel that my students really need me. I can see all the problems that we had when we were studying and thought that no one understand us. I can help, and I can tell them that education is the key to anything you want in the world. You can make impossible dreams come true by education and hard work.”
The School is working on a series of partnership ideas with EFA. These include CAS, house, department and service initiatives. EFA is one of the charities supported by Tower Aid’s, “Casual Clothes Day” on 27 October 2022 and, on 13 November, a group of teachers will be raising funds by “Everesting for Education”. Everesting is a simple, yet brutally hard, challenge where they have to cycle their bikes the height of Mt Everest (8,849m) by ascending Mt Hallasan 13 times! This may be tough, but to quote the team, “is reflective of the efforts children go to for an education”.
Wish Mr. Tuffs, Mr. Heydinger, Mr. Roberts, Mr. Gumus, Ms. Sannegadu and Mr. Brown, good luck and sponsor the team here: https://www.globalgiving.org/fundraisers/tuffcall/
As Khadija says, “I can give something back and this is due to the opportunity Education for All gave me. Thank you NLCS Jeju, we value your support.”

UPCOMING GLOBAL HOLIDAYS
Thank you to Chandler, Eunju and the CAC for their summary:
DIWALI - 24 OCTOBER
Diwali is one of the most popular holidays of Hinduism, and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. The celebrations usually last for five days, with special activities being set aside for each day. The height of Diwali is on its third day, which coincides with the darkest night of the lunar month.
Rangoli decorations, which are pans of colored sand and candles arranged in intricate patterns, are set outside the main entrance of households to welcome guests and bring good fortune to the family. Most designs include a circle and a flower, incorporating the elements using a creative array of methods. Households are almost constantly illuminated during Diwali, and some Hindus take a ritual oil bath at dawn on each day of the festival.
Although Diwali holds different meanings for celebrating religious groups, a common theme is the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. It holds a comparable amount of cultural significance to Christian Christmas, and marks a time period of heightened commercial activity in celebrating cultures.
To the members of our community who are celebrating, we wish you a very happy Diwali.

HALLOWEEN AND SAMHAIN - 31 OCTOBER
Samhain and Halloween are both festivals that celebrate our connection to the dead and the supernatural. Samhain was originally celebrated by the Celts in order to mark the end of harvest season and the beginning of the ‘darker half’—nowadays known as the winter months—of the year. The barrier between the physical world and the spiritual world was thought to become thinnest during Samhain, allowing mortals to communicate with the denizens of the underworld. Celts would dress and parade as animals and monsters so that fairies from the underworld would not be tempted to kidnap them. All Saints’ Day, celebrated on the 1st of November, was created by Pope Gregory in the 9th century as part of an attempt to convert Samhain into a Christian celebration. Irish immigrants brought Samhain to the Americas, converting it into Halloween in the process. Although the cultural origins of Samhain were diluted as the festival gained greater popular traction, it has regained prominence due to a revival of interest in Celtic religious beliefs.
DIVERSITY WEEK - 14 - 18 NOVEMBER
A week of celebration and exploration of identity, culture and diversity - looking at language, culture, disability, sexuality and religious diversity. If anyone at NLCS Jeju or the wider community would like to support the week or join us as a guest speaker, please get in touch. (cac@pupils.nlcsejeju.kr or Ms. Gellersen agellersen@nlcsjeju.kr).
PEACE VILLAGE AND JEJUMAM SAUSAGES
One of our service co-curriculars supports the local charity, Peace Village, which provides jobs for young people with additional needs - and the result of the employee’s hard work are delicious handmade sausages and hams.
Our students visit Peace Village as part of a CCA and take part in enjoyable activities with those who use the welfare centre. Thank you to our CCA students for creating these promotional flyers to ensure this great work can continue. Contact Mr. Gwangho Im (ghim@ nlcsjeju.kr) if you’d like to find out more about the project or how to buy their produce.
