A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju As you will see from this week’s newsletter once again we are celebrating the achievements of students at NLCS Jeju. Beyond the Curriculum students excel and we can see this in their individual achievements, how they work together either in their societies, or collaboratively in competitions such as MUN, as well as in the school focus week such as with Mandarin this week. The lectures this week were excellent such as the one delivered by students on Confucianism as it engaged well with other students and faculty. I am also delighted to report that the academic performance our students continues to be highly valued and over the next few week students in Year 13 are being interviewed remotely by Cambridge and Oxford, The students have been prepared well for this by their teachers and also by UGC who have been working on their presentation skills, especially when performing virtually rather than face to face. This preparation is something that develops over time and there is no doubt that the students who are part of the Medical Review Society are preparing well for future interviews for medicine. Friday evening we have our Senior School Music Concert which students have been preparing for and as always the callibre of performance will be excellent. Next week we also have the Junior School Music Concert to look forward to as well. Both concerts will be livestreamed. The Arts are exceptional at NLCS Jeju and this week we had the opportunity to see the IGCSE drama students performing their assessed pieces. The level of talent, attention to detail and preparation as well as being very entertaining was truly impressive. Well done to all our talented students! Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

MATHS
North London Collegiate School Jeju
PD Training Our Maths Department are universally admired and respected in Korea. Our results are second to none! Ms. Duygu Bulut and her team are constantly training, debating and updating their skills so they can improve their teaching (and keep up with our students!) There is a rigorous professional development programme in place throughout the year. Last week our whole Maths Department had online training with Mr. Craig Barton, the lead maths advisor to the TES website. He is an extremely well known maths educator, and having a bespoke training session with him is quite a coup! He has been involved in teaching Maths for 15 years. He is the Head of Education at Eedi, the author of the bestselling books “How I wish I’d taught maths” and “Reflect, Expect, Check, Explain”, the host of the Mr. Barton Maths Podcast, the creator of mrbartonmaths.com, diagnosticquestions. com, variationtheory.com, ssddproblems.com and mathsvenns.com, and Visiting Fellow at the Mathematics Education Centre at the University of Loughborough.
IGCSE CEREMONY DIVERSITY WEEK
North NorthLondon London Collegiate CollegiateSchool School Jeju Jeju
On Wednesday, November 25 we held a lovely IGCSE Ceremony to celebrate and honour the achievements of our current Year 12 students (last year’s Year 11.) While their IGCSE pathway ended rather differently from planned, it was important to acknowledge their successes. We heard from Mr. Matthew Brown, VP - Academic, Ms. Kate Fowler - Head of Year 11 (last year) and Mr. Simon Cox - Head of Sixth Form. Principal, Ms. Lynne Oldfield talked about how proud she was of our students and the breadth and depth of their School lives so far and that still ahead of them! We also had an opportunity to hear Mr. Sean Blakeley - CEO of the BCCK who spoke virtually to the students about their futures. Thank you to all the team who organised the ceremony - and congratulations once more to the students who outperformed all expectations!
MEDICAL REVIEW
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Last Friday saw the much heralded Medical Review take place in the PAC. Organised by the Medical Society led by Jiho (Joshua) Ha and JiHyung (Cindy) Ku this was a very professional competition where three teams of finalists presented their findings on the subject of Vaccinations. We were privileged to have a team of judges from the community. Dr Josefina Choi and Professor DongYoup Lee are parents of current students and illustrious members of the medical profession. We are incredibly grateful to them for taking time from their busy schedules to Zoom in from Seoul and offer thoughtful feedback. Chair of the Judges was Mr. Geoff Hall, Head of English. Congratulations to all three teams Therapeutic Cancer Vaccinations - Mark (Jiaan) Li and Noah Kim Oral Polio Vaccinations to help Combat COVID-19 - Sean Yoon, Rin Heo, Shiyoun Ryu Seasonal Influenza Vaccines - Taehee Kim, Seobin Lee, Hayoung Kim The worthy winners were Noah Kim and Mark Li. All three judges praised the huge amount of research and thought which went into the presentation as well as their professional speaking skills. Mark and Noah, in Year 12, are both taking Biology, Chemistry and Maths as HL subjects for their IBDP. Both hope to go onto careers in the world of Biochemistry or Medicine and hope to study in the UK so they already had a passion for their subject. They are a great team and acknowledge each other’s strengths. Noah says “ We did a huge amount of background research before coming up with our subject. We wanted to do something that wasn’t well known. It took a lot of work. “ Mark adds “After the first run through we had feedback from Mr Mark Prichard which was invaluable. He advised us on how to make it more coherent and more accessible.” They wanted to make the presentation accessible to all - especially those without a science background. They added more graphs and visuals and comparisons.

Rehearsal is key - “We rehearsed together for several hours. We were nervous and wanted to get an extension but Ms Pricahrd talked it through with us. Our way of making it the best it could be is to treat it as if it’s a conversation with the audience. We worked as a team and helped each other. We really thank Jiho Ha who was originally in our team and pulled out as he was running the event. We also are grateful to Ms Prichard who always encouraged us. “ Ms. Kym Prichard, Link Teacher and Head of Biology tells us why the Medical Review should be part of every serious Sciences student’s radar “This year’s Medical Review has, yet again, confirmed how extraordinary our students are. I know that I shouldn’t be surprised by this, but each one of our students who took part in the early and final stages of this year’s Medical Review showed how exceptional they are. Exceptional at researching vaccines from a non-typical perspective. Then, each student within their groups showed exceptional courage to present to judges who are either educational or medical professionals. I am really excited about next year; I can’t wait to see more Year 10, 11 and 12 students taking part in next year’s Medical Review and build on what Mark and Noah have established as a very high standard of presentation and discourse. “
MUN
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Last Friday and Saturday our students participated in the GEC MUN Competition. It was held online in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines but all our students were still able to research, prepare, debate and shine! We are very proud of all of the students who took time to take part but a special mention to the following students who gained Awards. In all, we gained an award in 6 out of the 7 committees we were represented in. Disarmament Committee Jaesang Oh - Best Delegate Lyulf Tuffs - Honourable Mention Historical Committee GeonHa Hyun - Outstanding Delegate Medellin Cartel (fictional committee) Roy Song - Outstanding Delegate Economics and Finance Committee Warrick Kim - Outstanding Delegate (just missed Best Delegate on overall points) Jihoon Ryeom - Honourable Mention Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee Steven Yang - Honourable Mention Chairs: Best Chair - Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee Eunice Lee Some of these students were attending their first conference, so a great effort to get these awards. Jaesang Oh won a Best Delegate award last year at this conference and has backed it up with another Best Delegate award this year. Ms Alison Tuck, Head of Geography and MUN Link Teacher said “We are so proud of all our students. They did an incredible job with the new format. Whether they were new to MUN or competing for the second year they poured all their energies into it with excellent results. We can’t stress enough what great skills students can develop by being part of MUN. They research, they think, they debate… This helps them in exams, in their university applications and in all aspects of their studies. I look forward to next year and more success!”
BOARDING WEEKEND
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Our Houses are getting festive and it’s going to be a lovely final week! Last Saturday morning, the boarder girls across Noro, Mulchat, Geomun and Sarah joined together across the Houses to hang out and enjoy different Christmas crafts, cooking, treats and karaoke. Year 7 girls got together in Mulchat,Year 8 in Sarah,Year 9 in Geomun,Year 10 in Noro and it was lovely for the girls to mix outside their normal groups and build friendships with girls from other Houses as well as get Christmassy together. Boarding is great fun and our wonderful Housemistresses make sure that the girls in their care have good breaks for exercise, fun (and restorative sleep) in their busy academic and enrichment schedules!
MANDARIN ENRICHMENT WEEK
North London Collegiate School Jeju
This week saw the final Academic Enrichment Week. Our Mandarin Department ran a wonderful week of activities. They created a fantastic video (LINK HERE) and staged lectures and activities including calligraphy, costumes, painting and videos. The teachers are so passionate and inspirational - they make Chinese lots of fun. It’s a hugely important subject as many of students agree. Catherine Wu, Year 13 and Leo Pei, Year 11, gave a lecture on Wednesday on “What is Confucianism and how did Confucianism influence Korea?” On Wednesday we had a wonderful Chinese lunch - recipes created by our own Mandarin teachers - which was hugely popular! Why choose Mandarin? Here, Clara Kim and Lawrence Bae explain why they love studying Mandarin and why they’ve chosen to study it here at NLCS Jeju. They both speak passionately about the language, its beauty and how interesting they have found the coursework here at NLCS Jeju so far. Both cite an early love of Chinese films and music as on reason to be attracted to learning the language.

Clara Kim
Lawrence says “Jeju is a great place to learn Chinese as many of the restaurants and shops are run by Chinese people. You can chat to them and practice the language! The trick is just to chat - don’t be scared or worry about making a mistake. The more you speak the better you are.” Both Clara and Lawrence think Chinese is a more accessible language to Korean speakers than European languages. “We share many common characters and pronunciation is similar” says Clara. “There is a perception that it’s hard but it really isn’t. It’s a language which has patterns. Also - if you learn the Chinese language you learn about the culture, too. There’s no problem if your accent is a bit odd as Chinese has many dialects.” Lawrence says his knowledge of Chinese has helped him make friendships at Summer camps. Both students agree that the Chinese teachers are universally wonderful! ”They are respectful and kind and want to share all that they know. They offer us extra help and support when we struggle.” Clara and Lawrence’s Tips For Success in Mandarin • • • • • • • • •
