A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju The term has not ended in the way we had planned for or hoped for - as our very large campus was asked to go to two thirds capacity in terms of student numbers for our final week. Due to the particular needs of our very youngest, and the examination and academic needs of our students in Years 10 - 13 this has impacted this week on Years 3 - 9 who have returned to partial online learning. Should the two thirds capacity limitation continue into the new year then we will adapt this further as presented in the provisional schedule for the first two weeks back. We hope that we will be back fully in school on January 4 but we are faced with two further possibilities - a complete class closure (reverting to full online learning ) or a further reduced campus capacity to one third of numbers. Special arrangements will be put in place whatever happens so that the IGCSE and IBDP Mock Examinations will definitely happen as planned. We will keep you updated in the holidays about arrangements for the whole school for January 4 2021. More importantly, the term has ended as planned with our students attending and contributing to celebration assemblies ( following guidelines on capacity so some students are online in their classroom). Our usual music concerts have been streamed and recorded and there have been wonderful drama events such as Victorian Ghost Stories (also streamed). The campus has had busking at lunchtimes for those students present which has been a delight to hear and all around the campus we have displays of student art. Student societies have been working on their publications including the recent issue of INFLUENZA. I do reiterate the importance of keeping up to date with all the health requirements regarding COVID-19 presented by KCDC and Republic of Korea’s guidance on levels across the country and how different levels have different requirements as well as restricting travel. This completes keeping up to date with all travel surveys. I hope that all of you have a wonderful winter holiday and have the opportunity to spend time with your families. May I wish you all happiness, health and a safe New Year for 2021. Lynne Oldfield Principal

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES

It has been difficult for Ms Cristyn Draper, Head of Music to deliver the Junior School Christmas Cracker as planned - as COVID Guidelines have meant that students have not been in together. But we have been innovative and each item has been recorded and shared with parents and a whole concert film produced which will be shared with parents. From beautiful ballerinas to the Grinch at Christmas to classical ensembles it has been amazing. We hope you’ve enjoyed it and you can see it HERE.

Our Junior School has produced some exceptional Christmas art. There are so many wonderful pieces and we can only highlight a few. We’ll keep sharing the best of our art as the weeks go on. In the meantime Happy Christmas from our Junior Artists! Snow, baubles, trees, reindeer and so much more‌
ASSEMBLIES Throughout the week students enjoyed House Assemblies and Year assemblies celebrating achievements this term. It was incredible to see the awards and accolades won by our students. We’ve seen students praised for academic studies, for Sports and Arts‌ They were also highlighted for being polite and cheerful, for looking smart, being helpful and a good friend. Every student is special and each teacher makes sure they all know that.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TERM
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Thank you to Mr Dex Masrey and Mr Christopher Chang who work tirelessly behind the scenes of all our productions. Without them there, we could not showcase our students’ talent and achievements as we do.They organise sound, lighting and electronics - everything from the safety announcements, to the credits on the livestream. They work closely with the Music and Drama departments, all the teachers and of course our Marketing team. Mr Dex Masrey, Theatre Manager, is in a unique position to see everything that goes on in the PAC and we asked him to pick his highlights of the academic year so far. Here’s what he says The start of this year was especially challenging. The school had to deal with COVID-19 and social distancing, and I was all alone to run the Theatre Department for the first two months of the term. Working in the theatre is definitely not a one-man job, and it takes a village to create quality performances. Here are my top 5 performances so far, and why I feel that way. 1. Cherin Kim playing Isn’t She Lovely (14 Sept 2020) https://youtu.be/uIJWBn-iSjg Cherin’s choice of a more recent popular song brought a refreshing atmosphere to the performances in the Monday Morning Assemblies. She truly showcased her talent with the piano, and it was one of the first recordings done this term. 2. The Jumblies by Edward Lear, performed by Y10 students (15 Oct 2020) https://youtu.be/Ur7AvJCbUYo The Year 10 students had prepared this drama piece with the guidance of Mr. James Hamilton-Scott, as an introduction to the skills required for the GCSE course and as their first formal performance assessment. The piece was rehearsed and recorded with minimal technical requirements, but the end result was simply amazing.

3. 2020 Senior School House Dance Competition (28 Oct 2020) https://youtu.be/VPT2UeHGMfw The House Dance is one of the highlights of each year. This year, I had the opportunity to plan out the show’s order, and I was quite happy with how it turned out. It was also an opportunity to improve on the PAC’s branding, presence, and quality, which I couldn’t do previously. This was also the first major event for our new Theatre Technician, Chris. 4. First School’s Dance - Under The Sea (29 Oct 2020) https://youtu.be/lyS8TQZUoKs This performance was planned well by Ms. Carolyn Moran, and she made sure there were enough rehearsals with the Year 1 kids. Chris and I designed the lighting, and it was quite a challenge since both of us are new at lighting design. 5. 2020 Senior School Winter Concert (4 Dec 2020) https://youtu.be/QLhJvx9EkKY The “grand daddy” of performances in the first term, this massive undertaking was very challenging for all of us due to the fluid situation regarding COVID-19, with multiple changes to the schedule at the last minute. Without the hard work of the students in the tech team, we wouldn’t be able to pull this off. I can’t wait to work with the amazing tech team again.

MATHS COMPETITION PREVIEW
North London Collegiate School Jeju
Our Maths department have some exciting news about next year. Mr Will Hebbron tells us “The World Maths Championship is a prestigious competition held all over Asia, with finals in Australia. The Senior level is for Years 11, 12, 13 and bring together teams of elite High School mathematicians for a wide variety of problem solving tasks over several days. Our Year 9 and 10 students participated online in the Junior event earlier this term, bringing home 14 gold, silver and bronze medals! We are proud to announce NLCS Jeju will host the Senior event for the first time in March 2021.
