What was your first impression of sports in NLCS Jeju? The fact that sports play a very important role in the lives of students at NLCS Jeju was something that I was aware of before coming here and it was definitely one of the reasons why I wanted to work here. My first impression was a very positive one - it feels great to be among people, whether it is staff or students themselves, who share the same passion for sports and are excited to learn new things and get better. The facilities here are amazing and I consider myself lucky to be coaching such motivated and talented students. I very much feel that my main contribution to sports at NLCS Jeju, specifically to basketball and golf, is making the students as well rounded athletes as possible by allowing them to embrace different perspectives and pushing them to keep improving to a point where they are able to compete at a high level, not only during their time here at the school, but also long after they leave. Can you give us an overview of your sports career so far? I have been playing golf since the age of 4 and I had previously represented the Czech Republic, my home country, on an international level. I was the captain of my high school golf team and I was a part of the University of Stirling Golf Team. I also started to play basketball at a young age, playing it all the way through high school and university. I am very passionate about fitness and strength & conditioning. In my free time with family and friends I like to play tennis, volleyball, football, and go skiing.Very early on in my life, I discovered that I not only have a passion for playing sports, but also for the business and coaching aspect of it. Therefore, I chose to follow an academic path that would prepare me for a career in sports; I completed a Masters degree in Sport Management from the University 2

of Stirling, and I pursued specific coaching training in both

golf and basketball due to my other passion of introducing lessons through sports. What is your most memorable moment as a coach in our school? My most memorable moment as a coach definitely has to be the NLCS HS Boys B team's first win last year during their pre-season game against KIS; it was also my first game as a head coach. Seeing everyone locked in, doing things that we’ve worked on very hard in practice, and just seeing everybody being out there having fun was truly an unforgettable experience, especially since the team got the win at the end! Do you have any goals for this season as a coach? My goal for this season as a coach, perhaps very unique and unusual, is to help each player on our basketball and golf team to improve as much as possible and help them to get the most out of their experience. My personal goal is to continue improving as a coach - to learn new things, not only regarding technique and tactics but also in terms of communication with students/players and identifying areas of improvement that could help them elevate their performance. Lastly, it is my goal to ensure that every single student enjoys their time playing sports here and takes away things that they can apply to other aspects of life. Thank you Mr. Tomas Vidura for your responses.Â

Terry Bradshaw and ADHD Awareness - Marty Sumatra Many american football fans are well aware of Terry Bradshaw’s legacy in the popular sport. He was a 1970s footballer who earned himself a place in the Hall of Fame after leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl championships over a 14 year career. He now works as a television sports analyst on Fox media. He has also starred in movies, such as Failure to Launch (2006), and has written bestsellers, like It’s Only a Game (2001). He has had an extremely successful and impressive career, and is incredibly important to sporting culture within America.

What many are unaware of, however, is Bradshaw’s own struggles with ADHD. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a disorder that affects between 2-5% of children and adults worldwide, which can often make aspects of ordinary life challenging when undiagnosed. Bradshaw was often mocked by fans and critics alike, nicknamed the ‘Bayou Bumpkin’ as an insult towards his intelligence. Bradshaw opened up in his novel It’s Only a Game how living with ADD negatively affected his school performance, and caused him to struggle with reading and studying. He was teased throughout university and well into his sports career for this obstacle, yet it only made him more motivated to do well in his football career. Bradshaw is not alone in his struggles with ADHD. Many famous athletes and other celebrities have been vocal about their mental health struggles and how that has affected their lives. Michael Phelps used swimming as an outlet for the restlessness his ADHD caused, and it pushed him to be one of the most decorated swimmers in 6

Granato, an olympian hockey player, getting a diagnosis for that “ADHD comes with certain strengths and weaknesses anything.” ADHD often goes undiagnosed and untreated due to a lack of general knowledge about the disorder, leading to harmful stereotypes and feelings of worthlessness and failure for those who are undiagnosed (or even those with a diagnosis). It is important to remember that invisible illnesses like ADHD or other mental disorders can affect anyone, and they don’t make anyone less valuable, or less successful. Mental health is as important to understand and treat as physical health. October 1st every year is ADHD Awareness Day, and so in honour of that we wanted to share the story of an athlete who didn’t let their disorder take over their life and lose control.
