House Shout

Year 10 Led Ver.

House Shout - the infamous competition where Houses either withstand the challenges of a new leadership team or crumble. All Senior School students head to their Tutor rooms to practise chants that slowly wear away at their patience and hearing yet most will say this event is one of the most memorable events in the academic year! To investigate this unique event Sarah writes this article, detailing the behind-the-scenes escapades of B213, the PAC practices, and our House Spirit

Firstly, to create our House chant we needed lyrics. ChatGPT and copy & pasting was the much simpler option, but we paved our own road and allowed different years to form small groups and propose chants for the whole House. Engaged and laughing, the drafting and performing of the fledgeling pieces were happily completed and our House Shout leaders masterfully secured the brightest sections of lyrics to each other and formed our 1 and 2 minute chants

Although I was unfortunately absent from the initial recording, based on the videos uploaded onto the Sarah google classroom it is apparent our leaders put great enthusiasm and passion into our wonderful chants. The rhythm, tone, and structure of our chant were indeed memorable and impactful!

Immediately after, the team got to work divvying themselves up into pairs and making their rounds around the Sarah tutor rooms Whenever I took a quick step outside, I was consistently met with the unwaveringly eager voices of our Phoenixes ready to win this competition A week or so later, we had already become familiar enough with the chant to have a proper practice at our very own Performance Art Centre. Filing into the PAC, we solidified our formation and choreography by the end of the half hour period, truly embodying our words of ‘Better and Better’

A few days later, the leadership team, alongside other Sar captains, were called into a meeting by our Heads of Hou They had keenly spotted certain improvements to be mad We noticed that without constant movement, we looked more like petrified chickens than fiery fowls of fantasy W also noticed after repeated practices we had begun to los spark. This simply could not do, so we conjured up a few simple fixes to our chant, more bouncing, more stomping more clapping, more, more, and more!

Before we knew it, the day had arrived…

Nervous yet ready, we temporarily invaded Jeoji territory and blew previous expectations out of the water with the sheer energy and gusto of our rehearsal that morning. By the time we had made our trek to the astro, we were ready and revving to go win

Flags waving proud, drums pounding, and hearts racing, we gave it our all and then some to secure our House’s name in not the dreaded last place, not 4th, and not the lacklustre 3rd, but 2nd! Although not 1st, I believe we were all somewhat shocked we had impressed the judges who were not even privy to the weeks of effort put into our SHOUT!

Incredibly done Sarah, we truly do get better and better!

Football

On the 19th and 26th of April, 2024, Sarah’s Y9 boys and girls engaged in the House Football competition Football, although one of the most popular sports within our school community, was not a particularly enjoyed sport for many of the Y9 boys and girls Hence, throughout the games, the competition did not go as smoothly as we expected.

For example, planning the strategies beforehand was an issue we had to deal with. Most of the designated players were not aware of the appropriate strategies. However, this problem was effectively overcome by a clever strategy from one student, Dongjiin (Leo) Im Leo assumed that facilitating the offence with players who are not very used to passing and shooting would prove to be difficult. And so, he came up with a brilliant strategy of focusing solely on defence Unlike the traditional football strategy where all the players are somewhat evenly spread out across the field, Leo’s strategy involved most players defending the other team behind the halfway line. Only two players would stand beyond the halfway line, and they would be the main facilitators of offence Indeed, this strategy is very far from the ‘conventional’ football strategy, but, considering our situation, it was the most appropriate strategy.

This strategy was mainly used in the match against Noro Noro’s roster had numerous MS varsity and junior varsity football players, and their offensive prowesses were above excellent However, our defence-centred strategy gave them a lot of struggles. Their main leading players struggled to keep control of the ball as Sarah players continually gave them defensive pressure Most of their possessions resulted in turnovers, and when they did not, our goalkeeper, Heonsoo Jeon, was able to successfully draw a save. This game resulted in a tie, and Leo’s strategy was the key to this result.

Ultimately, Sarah Y9 boys faced two ties and two losses. Although the result was not as successful as other houses, this showed how a smart strategy from a single individual could bring huge benefits to the whole house. This applies to all house activities When you feel like you have an opinion that can make the house better, feel free to shout it out whenever you want to, because all opinions are valuable in a way

Esports

Esports was a new addition to the house competitions; this year, being only for the year seven and eight boys, I was quite lucky to experience it myself.

The competition ran for two weeks, with the first week being Mario Kart and the second being Super Smash Bros There were three different versions: the normal, the tag team, and the teachers’ version In the normal version of the game, one student from each house competed in the challenge. These players were chosen for their own gaming prowess and strategies. The tag team version added a twist, having three people alternatively switch between using the controller Last but not least, there was the teachers’ version, which was, indeed, a chance for teachers to display their impressive esports skills On the whole, it was a fun-filled competition for both students and teachers alike to show off their hidden gaming talents

One of the most memorable moments for me was when Yoseph, Aiden, and I won the tag team round in the second week. It was an amazing moment of victory. At that moment, I remember shouting “KIRBY NEVER DIES!” into the microphone as we all went up from our seats.

Esports was an amazing experience, and an awesome addition to our diverse array of House Competitions By extending the competition to beyond the Year 7s and 8s, I hope that more people can enjoy it in the future, experiencing the same moments of excitement that I was able to this time around.

Badminton

Spotlight showered on our Sarah players as they walked up to the court with their badminton rackets and shuttlecocks in hand The game was expected to be quite rigorous and competitive, and so our Sarah players were naturally nervous Players from the other houses were seen practising in the sports hall, many of whom were very experienced and had gone out to KISAC or other competitions as a badminton player.

Audiences and cheerleaders lined both the second floor balcony and the edges of the first floor of the sports hall Sounds of swishing and chattering filled the atmosphere, uplifting the ambience Our Sarah players were fierce in this game and, aiming for victory, they tried their best to smash the shuttlecock and bring home a victorious shot

Prior to the competition day, they had trained during break times and lunch periods, either doing a rally or practising alone. As one of the members, I remember that, every practice session, we provided each other much support with techniques and skills I believe that this competition definitely gave a chance for our Sarah members to work together and learn to communicate with one another. It wasn’t simply difficult or tiring: the process itself was enjoyable, mostly because we were working together as a group

During the competition, the participants were divided into three categories: the boys, girls, and mixed categories. Each category had four members, who were then further split up into groups of two to form one team Most eagerly volunteered and set to work, flexing their knees and wrists and twisting their badminton clubs. The swift sounds of their shoes rubbing against the floor echoed through the vast venue, reflecting their willingness to compete with passion

With this same passion and dedication, Sarah brought home our best results Scoring 2nd overall and even securing first place in the Year 10/11 division, the competition proved to be a powerful testament to our Sarah spirit

Basketball

In an electrifying showdown on the 7th of June, Sarah faced off against Geomun and Mulchat in a match that had everyone on the edge of their seats Sarah clinched a narrow victory with 3 wins and 1 loss, showcasing not only our skill but also their resilience under pressure.

From the very beginning, the game was a display of intense competition and high energy. Both teams brought their A-game, with the first girls' match against Geomun ending in a tight 8 to 2 Sarah House’s star player and sports captain, Eileen Lee, was in excellent form, scoring several impressive three-pointers that kept her team in contention. The Sarah girls persevered with strong teamwork and strategic plays whose communication on the court was evident

As the game progressed, the Sarah boys' team also began to pull ahead. Their defence was particularly noteworthy, with Zion Choi and Kevin Park blocking several key shots from the Geomun and Mulchat players. Both teams fought hard, and the lead changed hands multiple times. Kooney Kim, our sports captain, orchestrated a series of strategic plays that led to critical baskets, including a crucial three-pointer by Jayden Lee that flipped the game The players from Mulchat house attempted a final three-pointer, but Sarah’s defence held firm, securing their victory.

The gymnasium was filled with jubilation as players, supporters, and teachers celebrated the hardfought win. Our sports captains praised the teams’ determination and sportsmanship, highlighting the contributions of both seasoned players and new talents

“This victory is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication,” Eileen remarked “I have to agree that we have to practise more–however our team pulled through and it’s a proud moment for Sarah.“

The win boosted our house’s morale, setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the year The players eagerly await the next game, hopeful that Sarah will continue their winning streak and bring home more thrilling victories, continuing to strive for fierce competition, teamwork, and an unyielding will to win.

Scrabble Scramble

Tick Tick Tick. Another letter appeared in our hectic pile of words. Tick Tick Tick. Another letter. Sweat dripped down backs as feet frantically pitter-pattered outside, gasping students dashing towards their designated rooms Sweaty palms reached for the mismatched letters, hands moving furiously, in sync, arranging and rearranging letters, vowels, consonants until… A gasp, then a click as the pieces of the final words are placed on the board Then, just on time, Ding Ding Ding, the infuriating ticking of the clock is replaced by triumphant rings marking the end of the 2024 House Scrabble Scramble.

Sarah had been practising for days, the chosen four people strategising and continuously racking their brains for longer words, better words. All of this had led to the final moment where Sarah was able to utilise all letters leaving no lapse of judgement and a board filled with words chiselled articulately resembling a work of art in the eyes of the four players, their hearts filled with satisfaction and pride.

From the minute the team stepped into the room until the final seconds, everyone showed the utmost concentration and devotion to completing the task at hand, no petty disagreements or half-hearted attempts Even the runners, gasping for breath, gave helpful suggestions and in the end, the strenuous effort and commitment shown by Sarah house led to an unforgettable game with no regrets

Scrabble Scramble, a game that (much as the name implies) included scrambling required the players to use both strategy and literary skills as well as maths and calculation. A blend of the core subjects, this game was truly challenging for the team members. Yet, we trudged along, taking it a word at a time, a letter at a time until in the end we had completed approximately 30 words Despite the complexities of the game, Sarah was able to formulate words successfully demonstrating once again Sarah’s knack for solving problems and mentally demanding activities

While this had not been a victory for Sarah house, the entire competition from the first letter appeared on the table as the time ticked down to the final one placed on the board. Until the words, placed painstakingly onto the boards were stuffed half-heartedly into the sack, once a pile of neatly placed words a scrambled frenzy much like its name Until the board is folded Until, the lid is closed marking the end of another unforgettable house competition. The lid closed on another reminiscence to be treasured and preserved

Cross Country

On the 3rd of May, 2024, everyone got out their running shoes to take part in the annual cross country house competition Just like the last year's competition, the majority of the participants contributed to the Sarah cause by running laps around the entire school for points. All Sarahrians took to running through one route around our school, surrounded with green foliage rising up to encompass a clear blue sky when looking from the ground An all-round pleasant activity, many enjoyed this chance to go outside for some sun and fresh air.

Of course, this was not the case for everyone. A select few students took part in a separate race that required them to run down the central path of the GEC before circling back, twice in total. The total distance ended up being around 36km

Naturally, some may have disliked this event due to how much the run tests one's endurance, as well as how it always inevitably ends with someone throwing up Yet, as we all persevered, this event was yet another success for our house.

Dodgeball

Throughout this year, we participated in various house activities which made the students feel a sense of belonging and bond with their house mates. In particular, since dodgeball is a team game, this house competition proved to be an excellent opportunity to put our house spirit to test

Each house was divided into two groups by gender, competing against each other Sarah had a great start, winning the first two games straight Everyone, including those in the audience, could feel the excitement in the air as they cheered in hopes for a Sarahrian victory. However, we faced some demoralising moments, for instance, when our players were wiped out in a row Some games left a feeling of bitter defeat among the Sarahrians, but we tried our best and came out on the other side stronger and more united as a team.

Although Sarah wasn’t able to secure a sure victory, the way we all communicated and encouraged each other during the competition was an appreciable moment of connection and house spirit It was wonderful to witness everyone actively participating in the game.

I hope these house activities become some of the most memorable moments of the year for all of us!

Swimming

The frigid water seemed to freeze my veins as I plunged into the icy depths of the abyss below Immediately, my body convulsed, shying away from the cold as I gasped, breaking the surface. Ready, set, go! As soon as the word ‘ go ’ was uttered, the once calm water was now alive with writhing bodies and furiously moving legs, pinwheeling arms. I dived down into the icy waves once again yet the adrenaline coursing through my veins soon provided immunity from the biting cold. My lungs began to burn as I glided, a far cry from a professional swimmer but still moving quite quickly through the water. Then, a grateful gasp of air. As soon as I emerged onto the water, I was overwhelmed by a cascade of shouts, cheers, and whoops all bouncing and echoing around the swimming pool, everyone cheering for their designated house. Soon, I fell into a steady rhythm. Down, kick, up, breath. Over and over again. Until, far ahead I spotted the place in which I had started. With a final burst of energy, I wrestled with the water A few metres away, less than a metre Then, the whole pool erupted into cheers as a mob of reds screamed, cheered, and hollered.

This competition had especially built connection and support as house swimming did not require individuals fit to compete in the olympics. It did not require the people who were naturally gifted in physical activity or those who swam for 12 years It required people willing to try their best and compete for their house, undaunted by swimming a few more metres than they would normally swim. It required the people who were willing to give it a go, and try. It was those people who tried their best and despite some fear, dived headfirst into the water and fumbled towards the finish line that received the most applause and support. Sarah, by cheering for everyone, not just the people who won first place, had shown true house spirit that day
