Performance Task Two Starts

AP Capstone is a national magnet program, which encourages kids to investigate, discover, and research the current events of the world.

Here at NMB, Mrs. Neufeld, one of the best Capstone teachers in the country, has a passing rate of 97%. Her tenacity and dedication makes the course extremely easygoing and some would even say fun. January 22, 2019 marked the first day of Performance Task two.

A requirement for the second part of the course is that students are given a set of stimulus material provided by the College Board, and they are to find a similar theme in all of them.

NMB’s Intense Raiders

By Larsen Charles North Miami Beach Senior High Raider’s team is by far the best and the most hard working team most people have ever seen. You can join any time you want, be committed to it and you’ll most likely compete for them. Raiders pushes you to your limits, and creates new paths/limits for you. If you’re a hard worker, constantly pushing yourself, getting yourself physically and mentally better, then NMB (North Miami Beach) Raiders is the team you’d want to be on.

Practice is every day, even when it rains, they find a way to get the workout in and go home, relax and have a good evening. They usually start practice by running around the school twice or running around the creek. Everyday there’s a different activity. However, two things that never change are running around the school or creek and stretching and minor exercises before they start.

Many join each year but not that many stay. It’s a lot like survival of the fittest. Sargent Serrano will work you to your hardest, that’s why you have to constantly push yourself and get better. It might be hard but for the result you get is worth it. Many have friends who are in Raiders and they complain how hard it is but they see a big difference between when they started and now. Overall NMB Raiders is a great team that pushes you to new limits, and get you physically and emotionally better on another level than the average person.

SCIENCE FAIR ACHIEVEMENTS AT NORTH MIAMI BEACH

North Miami Beach Senior High’s Science Department has been making some major gains this year. Seven students from NMB have participated in the South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the Miami Dade STEAM Expo, showcasing their incredible projects ranging from stem cell research, fruit oxidation rates, coding, creating a novel approach to wastewater treatment, and extracting energy from natural resources.

Of the seven students at the regional Science Fair, Alayna Nonhomme (11th grade), Widlyne Seide (10th grade), and Arianna Bartlett (10th grade) won bronze medals. Alexandra Leon (9th grade), Mojeed Ashaleye (12th grade), team of two Adrian Rivera and Juan Zuniga (12th grade), and Neica Joseph (12th grade) won gold medals. The latter three all proceeded to the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair to rack up more accomplishments for NMB High. At the State Science Fair, Mojeed won

a special award of $25 for his project in stem cell research in athymic mice conducted at the University of Miami, while Neica got 5th place in her project on harnessing mud energy to power a cell phone. Neica will be proceeding to the International Science Fair in May at Phoenix, Arizona. Our students are truly following Norman Vincent Peale’s advice to “Shoot for the Stars. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

Our students will become pioneers in the scientific community. Mojeed hopes to study Biochemistry at the Miami Dade Honors college, Neica will pursue Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, and Adrian will study Chemistry at the University of Florida. Special thanks goes to Mr. Luzardo for technicalities and printing the posters wonderfully, and to the Science Department for their help and supervison, including Mrs. Simon-Gant, Mr. Montalvan, Ms. Davis, Ms. Johnson, and our star Chemistry teacher and Science Department lead, Mrs. Boeva!

Charging Towards Excellence

This summer, the annual NAF summer internship will be happening. People who qualify are able to sign up and participate in it and gain academic advantages that’ll surely help anyone with whatever they aspire to be. The actual thing may be simple but the way into it isn’t so easy.

To qualify, you need a few things with one of them being a business attitude. Walking in with a not-so-serious attitude would show that you’re not mature enough for it and they would definitely remove you from the program. The second thing you’d need is a credit union account, if you don’t already have one.

You can easily one by depositing $5 through a credit union bank, here in the school on Monday and Wednesday. Another requirement would be the signature of Mr. Bernstein which isn’t so easy as he’d only accept those he thinks are ready for it. Lastly, you must be or have been on the NAF Track Program. This rule, unfortunately, makes it so that not everyone is allowed to join the internship.

Though it may seem like a waste of time to want to do something like this, you get a pretty good deal out of it. As said before, you get great academic endowments for any resume that you’d make along with over $100 and all in just six weeks! So, if you’re able to sign up for the internship, you should definitely do it as opportunities like this don’t come often and they’d help your future in massive ways.

NMB Drama Team Among the Best in the State Traveling hours on a bus to Tampa in order to compete with thousands of other talented Thespians from all over the state, North Miami Beach Senior High School’s Drama Troupe 3206 faced competitions, unafraid.

Christina Cherfils, class of 2019, received a superior for her college audition. Sabrina Rodriguez, class of 2019, received a superior in Duet Acting and an excellent in her college audition. Angela Panganiban, class of 2020, received a Superior in her duet acting. Emily Moss, class of 2020, received two Superiors in her performances in Pantomime and Junior audition. Nick Adeleke, class of 2020, received a Superior in his group Pantomime performance. Belema Josiah, class of 2019, received a total of four superiors in Pantomime, Playwriting, Solo Musical, and her college audition.

The journey to compete with the best began in December, when students participated in District Competitions. They received the highest rating of superior, qualifying them for their endeavors in Tampa. On arrival, the troupe attended an outstanding opening ceremony, igniting their love for art and for competing.

Throughout the trip the group of eight students competed in monologues, solo musicals, pantomimes, playwriting, duet acting, and auditions that would propel them to a theatrical education after high school. Towards the end of the trip, 3206 was honored to be featured in the closing ceremony video, encompassing the entire trip, allowing them to both open and close the show. Belema Josiah, the troupe’s reigning president stated “Being a thespian is about love,” thusly closing the show and stamping an everlasting mark on the troupe’s legacy.

Drama Troupe 3206 worked their absolute hardest to attend state competitions, and proved themselves among the best in Florida.

Performance Task Continued from front page 1 that students are able to choose on their own. The sources have to be a mixture of academic journals, blogs, and news platforms that provide a wide range of perspectives that provide an answer for the research question the student chose.

After writing the research paper, the final step of Performance Task two is to create a presentation that answers your research question and elaborates on the topics discussed in your paper. The presentation is sent to the College Board, where they grade students based on a plethora of requirements. Anything from interaction with the audience, to how clear your voice is can cause you to either earn or lose points when the College Board scores your paper. With the help of classmates, and the guidance provided by Mrs. Neufeld AP Capstone offers students a way to become involved in the world around them, and it helps students use analytical thinking and evaluation to find any possible solutions to the problems of our world today.
