NMB student Creates winning Poster for the Upcoming Census

This Fashion Show Was the Perfect FIT

By Elissa Bessard First of all, a census is an official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details of individuals. The data collected by the census determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (a process called apportionment) and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.

Your residency doesn’t matter. The count of the population can lead to better facilities, free after school programs, and other programs for the community.

This year, our school has been asked to create artwork for the city of North Miami Beach’s census. The Census Art Contest is a vehicle used to promote the census. Students were instructed to create art that featured everyone in the community; from babies to teenagers, to adults, and senior citizens.

Student artists were to draw or create a picture describing or representing the city’s census message that it is important, confidential, and easy to do. It is important the artwork highlight that everyone must be counted.

n January 15, 2020 Project F.I.T. students here at North Miami Beach Senior High held a fashion show entitled “Lights! Camera! Action!”

The purpose of the fashion show was to promote the school’s second hand clothing store, “The Second Chance Boutique.” The fashion show also showcased the wonderful Project F.I.T program.

Parents, students and teachers were all invited to enjoy this beautiful show. For some, the show was rather emotional as we witnessed

these students break out of their shells and shine on stage. The job coaches helped with music and dressing backstage.

Big shout out to Ms. Cecelia Hudson, the narrator of the show, who came up with the idea to introduce the second hand store to our school through the fashion show. Our jazz band and drama troupe 3206 performed to open the show and then Delesha Graham and Ashanti Marshall blew us away as the Masters of Ceremony, delivering an awesome performance.

Industry Certification Exam at NMB

T

he school’s Career and Technical Education program offers students various ideas to achieve industry certification status. Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Luzardo offer the Adobe Photoshop Exam. Ms. L. Jean offers the Microsoft Office Exam.

Ms. Ramos offers the nursing exam, and Ms. Bryan offers the ServSafe Exam.

Students who pass these exams get many rewards.

Among them, the NMB graduation requirement of an acceleration credit. Students also receive certificates from their respective tests, an ICE blue cord for graduation, and a free t-shirt that they can wear in the place of their uniform shirt.

Did You Know, NMB has an eSports Club!

s some of you may or may not know, NMB has started their very own Esports team. After the requests of many students, the gaming club has officially been brought into the mix of different clubs at NMB. This wasn’t only an effort made by the students but some of the faculty, too! After one of NMB’s vice-principals witnessed a group of students gathered in the hallway playing a very popular game known as Super Smash Bros Ultimate, she decided it was time for the longawaited club to be made. It wasn’t that easy to start up the club, though.

There are three games that the gaming club would be focusing on; League of Legends, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Rocket League. All three of these being very respectable games. To actually start the club, computers were needed.

Not a lot of teachers at the school were willing to allow a group of kids to play games on their

computers. However, out of the kindness of his heart, Mr. Bernstein, one of the teachers at NMB, allowed them to use his computer lab.

The gaming club has been running very smoothly so far, under the direction of Mr.Pasternack and Mr. Hawkins, both staff here at North Miami Beach Senior High. So far the club has been to two local tournaments.

Although none of them won this Super Smash Bros tournament, a few promising students made it very far within the competition.

up very soon! We also can’t forget about the League of Legends players, who have a major tournament coming up in a few months. So far the students have been practicing very hard in hopes of bringing back a trophy for the Charger Nation.

NMB Girl’s Basketball had an Eventful Season

Our Girl’s Basketball team season ended on February 7th, when we didn’t make it to Districts. The 20192020 season of Girl’s Basketball has had its ups and downs. Nevertheless, our Lady Chargers have made big improvements as a team and will be ready to take home the trophy next season. Let’s recount the most recent games leading up to the playoffs for Districts.

The Lady Charges won their game against Booker T. Washington 43 to 34. However, on January 18, 2020, we lost our game against South Plantation. Of course, on January 21, 2020, our Lady Chargers made a comeback against iMater Charter, winning 49-20. Our girls were ready for playoffs!

On February 5, 2020, Lady Chargers had their first playoff game that would determine if they would go to Districts.

They played against Booker T. Washington and won the overtime game 31 to 22. Our Lady Chargers were excited because one more winning game and they would be qualified for Districts. On February

7, 2020, they played against Monsignor Pace. Unfortunately, our girls lost 40 to 26. Although our girls did not make it to Districts this year, the Lady Chargers gave it their best and will do so next year!

grade, iPrep student Melissa Trevol. Her art piece was created in Mr Luzardo’s class, using Adobe Illustratror, and features a graphic showing multi-ethnic hands; perfectly conveying the messagre that we are all the same, and all count equally.

Melissa’s artwork will be reproduced on a variety of publications throughout the city, to promote the importance of the census.
