Female Enterprise: Women Business and Property Owners in New Orleans This exhibit presents a selection of women who owned real estate or businesses in New Orleans during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ranging from the well-known, like the Baroness Pontalba, to the obscure, like midwife Susie A. Carter, each contributed in some way to the economy of the Crescent City. The exhibit uses municipal and civil court records, directories, newspapers, and other sources in the Louisiana Division/City Archives to illustrate who these women were and how they represent the spirit of female enterprise in New Orleans. Curated by Wayne Everard and Irene Wainwright.

The Sporting Life & The Saints Are Coming S. Derby Gisclair and Brian Boyles will converse about the unifying cultural effects of sports through boxing, baseball, and horse racing during New Orleans’ gilded age and Super Bowl XLIV following Hurricane Katrina. Further reading: New Orleans Boom and Blackout: 100 Days in America’s Coolest Hotspot (The History Press, 2015) by Brian W. THE BEST BUY

TEEN TECH CENTER STARTS STRONG Over 150 teens and adults celebrated the opening of the new Best Buy Teen Tech Center on the second floor of the Main Library on Tuesday, June 19. The celebration was led by Mayor LaToya Cantrell; Charles Brown, Executive Director of the New Orleans Public Library; Donald Songy, Education Policy Advisor to Gov. John Bel Edwards; Ross Ledoux, Best Buy Senior Market Director; and Jennifer Castro, a rising senior at the Net Charter High School in Central City and frequent visitor to the Main Library. The Best Buy Teen Tech Center is equipped with technology and multimedia tools that can be used for music and video production, interactive programming, graphic design, and much more. It is the first of its kind in Louisiana and is the 17th built by Best Buy, which plans to install 60 by the year 2020. Over the next decade, 77 percent (1.4 million) of all U.S. jobs will require tech skills, yet only 400,000 people will be trained for these jobs. Best Buy Teen Tech Centers address the nation’s opportunity gap by offering teens free, year-round, hands-on technology access and education in an after-school setting. The Best Buy Teen Tech Center is made possible by grant funds from Best Buy and the Clubhouse Network, a collaboration with the MIT Media Lab. As of mid-July, over 90 teens have signed up as members, visiting the Center over 200 times. To learn more about the Center or to become a mentor, visit nolalibrary.org, click on Services in the main navigation, and select Best Buy Teen Tech Center.
