Celebrating Our History & Culture

New Orleans 300 December Events Every month in 2018, the New Orleans Public Library will host a presentation, discussion, and book-signing with contributors of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ (LEH) book, New Orleans & The World: 1718- 2018 Tricentennial Anthology, a collection of essays by leading scholars illuminating the role of the city in major events in U.S. and world history, the economic innovations and cultural expressions birthed in the city that impacted people around the globe, and the succeeding waves of new populations who redefined the city’s shape and society. The anthology is available for purchase at each event. The full schedule of events can be found at nolalibrary.org. New Orleans & The World

Female Enterprise: Women Business and Property Owners in New Orleans

The Soul of New Orleans

This exhibit presents a selection of women who owned real estate or businesses in New Orleans during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ranging from the well-known, like the Baroness Pontalba, to the obscure, like midwife Susie A. Carter, each contributed in some way to the economy of the Crescent City. The exhibit uses municipal and civil court records, directories, newspapers, and other sources in the Louisiana Division/City Archives to illustrate who these women were and how they represent the spirit of female enterprise in New Orleans. Curated by Wayne Everard and Irene Wainwright.

Clarinetist, composer, jazz historian and musical educator, Xavier University’s Michael White, PhD will celebrate with us a lifetime of second lines and jazz funerals at this very special Hubbell Author Night. Further listening: Adventures in New Orleans Jazz, Part 1 (Basin Street, 2011) and Adventures in New Orleans Jazz, Part 2 (Basin Street, 2012).

Bike to the Books New Orleans has always been a good place to ride a bike, and not just because there isn’t a hill in sight. But, recently, biking in New Orleans has become safer thanks in part to the City’s bicycle network of more than 120 miles of shared-use pathways, protected bike lanes, and traditional bikeways. In addition to the increased bikeways, the City has begun the installation of 485 new bike racks throughout New Orleans. As bicycle ridership continues to grow, the Library is actively developing ways to support bike culture through its own initiatives and through a growing partnership with Bike Easy, a local bicycle education and advocacy organization.

Bike Lock Check Out Library staff regularly noticed people having to leave their bikes unlocked outside when the would visit the Library; and with bikes serving as so many people’s primary method of transportation, the staff knew something needed to be done. Beginning December 1, all 15 Library locations will have bike locks for daily check out. The bike locks are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are only to be used on Library bike racks.

Fix It Stations Bike Easy has installed two FixIt Stations at the Main Library and Norman Mayer Library with additional installations planned for the Nora Navra Library and the Martin Luther King Library very soon. Fix-It Stations are free 24-hour public access repair stations located outside of libraries. The stations have a stand and complete set of tools to allow for tightening seats, adjusting brakes, or changing a flat tire. The stations also have a durable air pump with a gauge to ensure tires are properly inflated.

Bike Easy Workshops The Library will continue to offer trainings with Bike Easy on bicycle safety and rules as well as how to properly maintain bikes, including how to repair flat tires and maximize comfort while riding. The next Bike Easy bike maintenance workshops will be held at the Main Library on Monday, December 3, from 4:30pm to 6pm and at the Norman Mayer Library on Saturday, December 15, from noon to 1:30pm.

Blue Bikes Hubs Adding to the bike landscape is the bike share program Blue Bikes. The program, which is a partnership between the City of New Orleans and Social Bicycles and is sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, launched last year and offers a convenient way to bike around the city. The Alvar Library, Nora Navra Library, and Main Library all have Blue Bike hubs near their locations. The Main Library is consistently one of the top 10 most used hubs in the Blue Bike system with around 800 trips beginning or ending there monthly.

For more information about checking out bike locks, fix-it stations, and Bike Easy classes, visit nolalibrary.org. To learn more about Bike Easy or Blue Bikes, visit bikeeasy.org or bluebikesnola.org.
