INSIDE O U T Bringing the Library to You

The Library has always been committed to serving all neighborhoods and communities in New Orleans, beyond its 15 Library locations; and, in 2017, as part of the Library’s 2017-2019 Strategic Plan, Aime’ Lohmeyer was hired as the Library’s first Outreach Librarian. This position was designed to formalize and extend the Library’s community outreach services and to provide services that include offering a variety of presentations and programs throughout Orleans Parish. In 2018, the Library was represented by Library staff at 180 programs and events throughout New Orleans including festivals, school visits, camps, and parades. We reached 18,165 people at these events and made/ updated over 900 library cards! When asked what her favorite thing about her job was, Aime’ said, “It is really fun to be out in the community and hear how much people love the Library. People smile and wave at me and give me a thumbs up when I’m driving the outreach vans. Also, I love it when we are doing a book giveaway at an event and a child runs up excited about the books and then their eyes get wide when they find out they can choose whichever one they want to take home with them.

What has 8 wheels, traveled over 40,000 miles in 2018, and can be seen from a mile away? The Library’s two outreach vans. These colorful vehicles aren’t just for transportation, they are both equipped with Wi-Fi so that Library staff can offer on-the-spot Library card sign-ups, check out books, provide e-Resources demonstrations, and more; no matter where they are located. Staff will begin using the vans to host Pop-Up Libraries around New Orleans beginning in Spring 2019.
