When asked to reflect upon his career, he said, “It’s been filled with experiences that I could not possibly have imagined when I initially began, as a Library Associate, in a branch of my hometown St. Louis Public Library in 1969. Preparing to end a career that spans half a century and has been integral to my life is daunting beyond words. However, that it comes to a close here at the New Orleans Public Library seems fitting. Together, in collaboration with the community and elected officials, we collectively have much of which to be proud.” During Mr. Brown’s time as City Librarian/Executive Director, the organization has thrived. In 2016, a three-year Strategic Plan was implemented; by Summer 2019, 14 of 15 Library locations will have been rebuilt, relocated, or remodeled/renovate to some degree; and, as a result of the Library’s 2015 millage proposition passing, Library hours of operation have increased by 30% and 6 locations operate 7 days a week, which are just a few of the organization’s many recent accomplishments.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SERIES

Finding A New Way To Work Workforce Development Series Since 2014, the Library has partnered with Jessica Rareshide, CPC, CSP, to offer programs that are related to job search strategies, interviewing techniques, and résumé assistance. The success of these programs has been extraordinary in educating Library users in desperate need of new techniques of job searching in the ever-changing workplace, especially considering that the job search process has changed so dramatically during the last five years due to technology. In 2015, additional programs were offered with topics that focus on career happiness, retiring and restarting, and returning to the workforce; and, along with the new programs came a new name: the Workforce Development Series. Everyone could learn something new from the programs in the Workforce Development Series, but those who haven’t had success searching for their next job, who may be doing the same thing over and over again using outdated methods, will benefit the most and are encouraged to attend.

These programs have had a profound impact on those who have attended them. “I attended the two-part résumé workshop at the Library with the hope that I would learn a few tips to help me with the résumé I was using for my job search. The best description of me when I began the workshop was frustrated, anxious and filled with despair. At the conclusion of Part 1, my spirit had been lifted and I felt confident that I would be able to find a good job that is a match for what I like most and have the skills to perform well.” Emmit L. “Jessica has an uncanny ability to reach people where they’re coming from no matter what level of interest. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing her speak to an audience in different phases of their career. I’ve witnessed everyone taking away a great personal benefit.” Linda S. “As a person in transition from one job to another, I learned how to have clarity, focus, and purposefulness needed to make the transition.” Carolyn T.
