Asking for a Friend – GiveNOLA DAY is May 7

2–13 GiveNOLA Day is a 24-hour event hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to inspire people to give generously to nonprofits, making our region stronger and creating a thriving community for all. On GiveNOLA Day this year, please consider donating to the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library, who do so much to support the Library.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the United States during May. The Library’s Health Literacy Educator has partnered with community organizations to provide a variety of mental health-related programs throughout the month culminating with a Mental Health Matters health fair at the Algiers Regional Library, Saturday, May 25, from 11am to 3pm. All Mental Health Awareness month program descriptions, locations, dates, and times can be found in the event listings and at nolalibrary.org. Mental Health Awareness Month programs are sponsored by the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library.

SUMMER FUN PRIZES, RAFFLES & contests Registration Prize: Everyone who signs up for SUMMER FUN will earn a registration prize. Reading Challenge: Children and teens can earn prizes and raffle tickets each time they read or are read to for 200 minutes, up to 1,000 minutes. BINGO Challenge: All ages can earn raffle tickets by completing activities and getting BINGO on their SUMMER FUN BINGO card.

Adult Writing Contest: Adults, ages 18 and over, are invited to submit a short story, poem, or essay as part of our 5th annual Adult Writing Contest. Original submissions should use the theme, READ | LEARN | EXPLORE and incorporate at least 7 of the 11 words listed below: Affair, Blossom, Breeze, Explore, Humidity, Insight, Learn, Read, Space, Supernova, Travel 1st Place: Prize at $100 value 2nd Place: Prize at $50 value 3rd Place: Prize at $25 value To see the full rules of entry and to get an entry form, visit any Library location or nolalibrary.org. Training – Before first responders arrive, you can save a life by knowing how to provide hands-only CPR, administer naloxone, and stop bleeding. This class will teach participants how to

identify someone who has overdosed from opioids, gone into cardiac arrest, or has uncontrolled bleeding. The training is free and no medical background is needed. A New Online Collection of Old New Orleans’ Criminal Past The Library’s Louisiana Division/ City Archives & Special Collections Department houses a unique collection of mugshots and Bertillon cards from the New Orleans Police Department’s early records, dating from as early as 1895. The crimes represented in this collection are considered petty and are recorded as “criminal occupations.” These include burglar, sneak thief, confidence (conman), suspicious person, pick pocket, prostitute, and forger, among many others. The collection is now available to view online at archives.nolalibrary.org.
