The Society of American Archivists and other professional organizations have designated October as American Archives Month. The Louisiana Division/City Archives & Special Collections serves as the official repository of the records of the City of New Orleans in addition to caring for many other important pieces of New Orleans’ history. Our goal is to provide preservation and access, and highlight the enduring value of those records which serve as the building blocks for our community.

Female Enterprise: Women Business and Property Owners in New Orleans This exhibit presents a selection of women who owned real estate or businesses in New Orleans during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ranging from the well-known, like the Baroness Pontalba, to the obscure, like midwife Susie A. Carter, each contributed in some way to the economy of the Crescent City. The exhibit uses municipal and civil court records, directories, newspapers, and other sources in the Louisiana Division/City Archives to illustrate who these women were and how they represent the spirit of female enterprise in New Orleans. Curated by Wayne Everard and Irene Wainwright.

EARLY LITERACY

EARLY LITERACY LIBRARIAN Supports Young Library Users The New Orleans Public Library continues to achieve the goals set forth in our 2017-2019 Strategic Plan, with one of the most recent accomplishments being the creation of a system-wide Early Literacy Librarian position. The position is designed to assist in the strategic initiatives of Championing Literacy, Strengthening Communities, and Enriching Minds. Filling this important position is Christine Sabathia McCourtney who has worked for the Library since 2010, first as a Library Associate at the Norman Mayer Library, and then as a Youth Services Librarian at the Robert E. Smith Library after earning her Master of Library and Information Science in 2015. During her time with the Library, Christine has been dedicated to serving the youngest library users and focusing on children’s programs and services. Her work has embodied the Every Child Ready to Read initiative that provides parents and caregivers with the resources needed to develop and enhance early literacy skills in children from birth to age five.

Christine Sabathia McCourtney, Early Literacy Librarian

In her new role as the Early Literacy Librarian, Christine’s work will expand to a system-wide level, working with staff at all 15 library locations and community partners to help children develop their early literacy skills, to provide support for parents and caregivers, and to establish the Library as a primary resource for life-long literacy education. To learn more about the Library’s early literacy To learn more about the Library’s early literacy resources, email earlyliteracy@nolalibrary.org or call 504-596-2583.
