September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when libraries nationwide join together to remind their communities that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Sign-up Month, so celebrate with us by signing up for a library card if you don’t have one already or encourage your family and friends to sign up for cards. Throughout September, teens who update their existing card information or sign up for a card will receive a free Blow Pop, and anyone can visit one of our 15 Library locations to get a free sticker.

Female Enterprise: Women Business and Property Owners in New Orleans

Engine of Equality

RD

This exhibit presents a selection of women who owned real estate or businesses in New Orleans during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ranging from the well-known, like the Baroness Pontalba, to the obscure, like midwife Susie A. Carter, each contributed in some way to the economy of the Crescent City. The exhibit uses municipal and civil court records, directories, newspapers, and other sources in the Louisiana Division/City Archives to illustrate who these women were and how they represent the spirit of female enterprise in New Orleans. Curated by Wayne Everard and Irene Wainwright.

Join Kara Tucina Olidge, PhD, Executive Director of the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University, to explore New Orleans as a frontier for legal battles and protests that fueled the Civil Rights movement. Image: courtesy of presenter.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 5:30-7PM NIX LIBRARY

Louisiana is Ours Historian, author, and former Director of The Historic New Orleans Collection, John Kukla, PhD will explore the international crisis that led to the Louisiana Purchase and the establishment of New Orleans as one of the United States’ most spectacular cities. ON DISPLAY

STORIES UNFOLD AT THE LIBRARY Paper Monuments is a public art and public history project designed to elevate the voices of the people of New Orleans, as a critical process towards creating new narratives and symbols of our city that represent our collective vision, and to honor the erased histories of the people, places, movements, and events that have made up the past 300 years as we look to the future.

The New Orleans Public Library is proud to announce a temporary installation in partnership with Paper Monuments, Stories Unfold. This series is designed to engage a broader audience than traditional historical markers through the combination of written (narrative) and illustrated (visual) storytelling and is inspired by HistoryPin and the American Library Association.

A permanent Stories Unfold installation is at the Main Library from September 1, 2018 – May 29, 2019.
