FROM THE EDITOR Hello. Welcome to the Winter edition of the Nola Wedding Guide. It has always been my goal to provide every newly engaged bride with the best resources necessary to make intelligent choices while planning her wedding. Well ladies, we have a plethora of great features and photo spreads in this issue that will surely inspire and enlighten all of you. Since planning your wedding can sometimes be stressful, it is my aim to relieve some of that stress from your lives. We, at Nola Wedding Guide, offer you a combination of informative, up-to-date articles on relevant topics, local information - such as how to obtain a marriage license - and visually inspiring photo spreads that can broaden the scope of what is available to you as you plan your wedding. So take a deep breath and relax, grab your favorite beverage and spend some quality time with the Nola Wedding Guide. You will be glad you did! Look at the pictures! We have three very different and unique photo spreads in this issue. We actually spent a day at a real life castle in Ponchatoula, La. and had a great time showcasing the romantic and majestic grounds of Louisiana Castle. Our next shoot took us to Rivertown in Kenner where we photographed at an elegant French Quarter inspired venue, The Crossing. The color palette for this shoot really pops off the pages. Il Mercato was chosen to host our final shoot of this issue. A Bohemian theme and gorgeous color palette, once again bring this whimsical and contemporary shoot to life. Thank you to everyone involved in the creation of these photo spreads. I am blessed to work with such creative and willing people.

Cake Pulls N e w O r l e a n s St y l e

Eiffel Tower: travel & adventure Oil Derrick/Pelican: wealth & riches Red Bean: true love crown: next to marry

Several interpretations exist regarding the meanings behind ribbon pulls. Here in Southern Louisiana brides love the tradition of integrating cake charms into the wedding celebration, but what many fail to realize is that there are New Orleans style cake charms out there that have

Crawfish/Crescent Moon: good luck Alligator: long & enjoyable life Fleur de Lis/Bourbon Street Sign: happy life Magnolia/New Orleans Water Meter: home filled with harmony & love

connotations comparable to their conventional

Cypress Tree: life of financial security & blessings

counterparts. We here at the Nola Wedding

Mardi Gras Mask: fashionable life

Guide would like to offer our brides our take -

Bear: life of wisdom

this fun, updated guide - on finding the perfect New Orleans charms for a Big Easy wedding!

Baby: next to have a baby Button or Thimble: old maid

P LA N N I N G

Stacy Marks

When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

1.

State law requires a certified copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver.

2. If either party is divorced, he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree. 3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate. 4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required. 5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.

16

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Age Requirements If either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenile court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

General Information A Louisiana license is valid in any parish in Louisiana for 30 days. There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time of issuance and the ceremony. Only a district judge or Justice of the Peace can waive this. Newlyweds should order a certified copy of their marriage license two weeks after the marriage to ensure that the license has been returned and recorded.by Louis Photography

H I could tell right away that there was something different, something special about Jimmy. Jimmy and I met at a high school dance. I was a senior and Jimmy was a junior. Little did I know that I was about to meet my future husband. We got to talking, and as they say, the rest is history.

Jimmy’s mother mentioned to me that she would like to renew her vows with her husband. The vow renewal was set for Valentine’s Day. She also asked Jimmy to give a short toast before the actual vow renewal took place. As Jimmy began his toast, he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. The entire vow renewal was actually a disguised marriage proposal for me!

During the planning process, there were many happy and memorable times, and there were also times when the stress felt like it would break me. However, the constant support from family, as well as working with such wonderful vendors really helped to make the planning as stress-free, fun, and remarkable as possible.

I was actually very calm the day of the wedding. It was a happy, reassuring feeling knowing that in a few hours I would become Mrs. Hymel. Everything just felt so right! When walking down the aisle, I just kept my eyes focused on Jimmy as I made my way toward him. And, of course, I cried all the way down the aisle!

My favorite part of the reception – honestly – was the band. I loved being on the dance floor with everyone, celebrating and having fun. The band did such an incredible job entertaining everyone for four hours – the dance floor was packed! Jimmy and I had a blast!

The Do’s and Don’ts Advice from New Orleans’ Leading Wedding Professionals

DO

by Troy Marks

Operate on the assumption that something will go wrong. It will happen! Enjoy every moment of your day and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Let friends or family talk you into doing things that you don’t want to do. It is your day.

Get everything in writing; this is your only protection.

Drink too much early in the day; it will be a long one and you want to remember every detail.

Have a pair of comfortable shoes to change into.

Go over 5 minutes when making a toast.

Hire a professional photographer; they know what they are doing, will work quickly and allow you to enjoy your day.

Buy a smaller size dress and convince yourself that you will lose the weight to fit into it. This rarely happens.

Hire a professional videographer; , these memories are more precious than gold.

Always hire the cheapest vendor you can find; chances are you will get what you pay for.

Look directly into your spouse’s eyes during your vows.

Try to please everyone; there will always be someone that is unhappy with their dress, the date, etc...it is your day!

Remember to smile. The bride sets the tone for the whole day. Be thankful. Be happy. Enjoy. Ask the caterers to set aside a take-home meal for the two of you. Chances are you will be starving at the end of the day. Plus you paid for it. Involve the groom; this is your first chance to make decisions and work together; it will come in handy down the road.

Tan too much as the wedding day approaches. Wear mascara that is not waterproof. Forget to have someone on hand who knows how to bustle your dress. Chew gum on your wedding day

Let your wedding reflect who you are; music, readings, vows and toasts can all be made personal.

Be late; you have paid so much money and have planned meticulously; enjoy every second.

Delegate some responsibility to others; you will need help, as planning is a huge task; if you can afford a wedding coordinator, they are worth their weight in gold.

Buy a veil that is overwhelming; the veil should compliment your dress, not overshadow it.

Be yourself; wear your hair and makeup in a way that allows your guests to recognize you;

30

DON’T

Hold on to your bouquet when you reach the alter; hand it off to your maid of honor.

Go on a honeymoon - even a few nights at a local hotel will allow you to escape and enjoy your first days as husband and wife.

Write thank you notes to just the guests who gave you gifts. If the officiant or coordinator at the reception location does a great job, drop a quick line.

Allow your reception band to be themselves and make the party. You may hate line dances, but the party will suffer if you micro-manage the play list.

Wear perfume or cologne at outdoor weddings because the bugs will love you.

Le Passage The Crossing

In the beautifully quaint, village-type atmosphere of Rivertown in Kenner, Louisiana, sits the Crossing. With exposed brick, beautiful ornamental lighting and arched doorways, the Crossing gives off an understated air of French elegance. We gathered two beautiful brides in this pristine setting to showcase the beauty of the venue, as well as the work of all of the vendors who participated. An emerald and gold color scheme was chosen to accentuate and tie together all of the stylistic elements of the shoot. We hope you enjoy the shoot as it evokes love, romance, elegance and beauty. We bring you Le Passage (The Crossing).

8 Things

every Bride forgets by Troy Marks

56

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

1

The Rings Seal your rings in a special bag and put one person in charge of guarding them until the start to the ceremony. Do not allow your ring bearers to carry your real rings down the aisle. Put a pair of “fake” bands on the ring pillow and keep the real ones in a safe place.

2

Freshen Up (in between the ceremony and reception) Don’t forget to freshen up AFTER you walk down the aisle. This is the first time that you will be greeting most of your guests, so you’ll want to look your absolute best. Take a minute to freshen up your makeup and have a breath mint before the reception.

3

Hotel Plans Call the hotel to let them know how late you plan on checking in that night. Remind them that it’s your wedding day (so they may have champagne or assorted goodies waiting for your arrival). Once your overnight bags are packed, enlist a friend to take them over to the hotel.

4

Pack comfy shoes You’ll want (and need!) a beat up pair of sneakers or favorite flip flops to change into as the night wears on. Designate someone to make sure that they are at the reception location. You’ll thank them later!

5

Vendor Tips (in envelopes) Put each vendor’s CASH tip into a separate envelope and seal it up. Make sure to include the name of the company and the vendor on the outside to ensure proper delivery. Throw a rubber band around the stack and pass it off to a trusted friend or your wedding planner who can make sure these important players get their much-deserved thanks.

6

Drink water It’ll do wonders for your spirit and your complexion. And you won’t feel dehydrated, tired, or worn. The only downside? You may have to spend a few more minutes in the bathroom.

7

Avoid Honeymoon Hassles If you’re leaving for your honeymoon the morning after your wedding, call the airline the morning of your wedding to be sure there are no changes in your flight plans (or sign up for daily text alerts). Make sure your boarding passes and passports are tucked safely away in your luggage.

8

Ten Minutes Alone After the ceremony, be SURE to take some time to be alone with your new husband. As soon as you re-enter your wedding, you’ll be pulled in a million different directions. So savor this moment of new marital bliss. Even if it’s for just 10 minutes—it’ll probably be the best 10 minutes of the whole day. w w w . n o l aw ed d i n g g u i d e. co m

L Raymond and I met many years ago in a parking lot before my friends and I headed out to a party. I didn’t give him much of a chance at first, but eventually I gave in, and here we are today!

Surrounded by my family and friends, Raymond completely surprised me by proposing one night at a casual dinner. I was wearing gym clothes and had absolutely no make-up on. I was shocked, but of course I said yes! It was one of the most memorable times of my life.

My uncle played a huge role in helping me plan my wedding. He celebrated my engagement at lunch on Magazine Street, presented me with a letter about his vision for my wedding dress, and he also turned his house into a truly exquisite bridal suite to make me feel like a queen on the day of the wedding- I truly could not have asked for more.

As the day went on, the excitement crept up! The ambiance as I stepped out of the carriage was simply delightful. I got the chills and flutters in my stomach as I began to walk towards my family and friends with my groom waiting patiently for me.

After the ceremony, we second lined inside where we danced the night away with some of our closest friends and family. We are so blessed. We truly had the time of our lives.

BEAUTY

Complexion

Perfection by Ana E. Seip

What’s the worst thing that could happen on your wedding day? Really think about it. Most likely it has to do with your appearance. Now imagine waking up with a gross monster of a blemish in the middle of your forehead. Terrifying, I know. Every bride knows make-up is an important part of the day, but the base you put your make-up on is just, if not more, important than the products you choose for your ceremony. Having good skin means a ‘glowy’ complexion, better preceremony photos, and your face won’t look like it has layers and layers of make-up on your skin. Beautiful skin means less make-up since you’re not trying to hide any imperfections. This all results in a natural bridal look, guaranteed to make your groom swoon. Follow these steps below to see how to accomplish this! 1. Start seeing a dermatologist as soon as possible so you can find a new regimen that works with your skin. Many will tell you that a good moisturizer is one of the most important steps to good skin, but there are also oral medications and topical creams for a strong attack on acne and oiliness. 2. Facials seem like an easy go-to answer, but make sure you don’t get your first facial on the days leading up to your wedding! Some can be very abrasive and do not work for all skin types. Also, rest your face for a good week to prevent any redness and irritation that facials can trigger. 3. Sleep can do wonders for the skin, especially in the under eye area. If you are prone to dark circles make sure you carve out time in the week leading up to your wedding to get a full night sleep every night so you look, and feel, rested. If you still need more coverage, go to your local makeup counter and ask them for highlighting under the eyes. A cold compress is also a good way to improve circulation and get rid of any puffiness! 4. Drink water! Plenty of water. It’s no secret anymore that water can give a dewy glow to your skin if you drink enough of it, so carry it around with you 24/7 until the big day. Your skin needs that extra moisture, especially during the winter months!

M AKEU P TRE N D S Getting just the right look for your wedding day can be largely dependant on your choice of makeup. We asked some of the top makeup artists in New Orleans: Dazzle Doll, Flawless Bride and Makeup by Meggan to share their tips and tricks to achieve a gorgeous wedding day look. Whether you are going for a natural or dramatic appearance, it is important to keep a few things in mind so that you are “camera ready.” “First and foremost, flawless skin is a must. I use a variety of products based on your own unique skin type before and after applying foundation. This allows you to have a smooth, even, and long wearing complexion. Equally important are the brows. Filling in any unevenness in your brows will allow your face to look balanced and give the perfect frame for your eyes,” says Ann Marie White of Dazzle Doll.

“To keep your look unique, choose shades of eye shadow that really compliment your eye color.”

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

It’s important when choosing the darkest color in your look’s eye shadow palette for it to actually compliment the color of your eye. The days of packing on plain black or gray to the outer corners of your eyes are over! For example, you can look for a dark brown shade with subtle hints of red to compliment blue eyes like I used on Emily. This color should also be a matte shade to add depth. Another key to drama is adding black liner to the bottom water line and winged liner on the top lid. The winged liner will elongate your eye and always add a sultry flare. Choose a lash that compliments your eye

emily

shape. On Emily, I chose a full yet whispy lash that was longer on the outer corners to reinforce the wing shape. Whispy is definitely a trend right now in eye lashes. Last but not least is your lip color. When I choose this color for a bride, I take into consideration the color palette and style of the wedding decor, the season, and of course my beautiful bride’s own features. The color I chose here is one of my favorite combinations because of the unique quality it has. It looks great on many different skin tones.

Soft Smokey Eye by Heather Burnam, Flawless Bride For Ashley’s soft smokey eye, I started by applying a thin layer of “Potion 9” eye shadow primer by “Urban Decay” on the entire lid. For this look, I used the “Kat Von D” eye contour palette “Shade & Lights.” To highlight her brow bone, I used “Liberatus” and for the lid color I chose “”Latnus.” For the crease contour, I used “Samael” and for the outer corner I mixed “Solas” and “Shax.” I then

ashley

used a fluffy contour brush to blend corner into crease. To soften and blend the bold colors I added a touch of “Amber Lights” by “M.A.C.” and blended with a brush. For a more dramatic look I added “Black Track” gel liner by “M.A.C.” to the top and bottom lash line. (continued)

I then took angle brush and used “Shax” (a bold black shadow) and smudged the line to create a smokey effect and added liner to the water line of her bottom lashes. I used “Vanilla” pigment by “M.A.C.” on the inner corner of her eyes and also on the highest point of brow arch to brighten the eyes. I finished it off with a generous application of “Better than Sex” mascara by “ Too Faced.” For Ashley’s face, I used “Bye Bye Undereye” by “IT cosmetics” to conceal and brighten the undereye.

applied foundation after the eye make-up and concealer using “Studio Fix Fluid” by “M.A.C.” and blended it with the “Flawless Airbrush” foundation brush by “Sephora.” For contour and blush I used “Radiance Platte” by “IT cosmetics.” For the perfect eye brow, I used the “Brow Pro Palette” by Anastasia. To achieve the perfect nude lip, I lined and filled in her lip with “Buff” lip liner by “IT Cosmetics,” added “Pure Zen” lip color and finished it off with “Love Nectar”

Dress to Impress

P LA N N I N G

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. Usually matched with fitted bodices, these dresses flare out from the hips, providing just the right amount of sensational and over-the-top glamour. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. However, if high drama and spellbinding impact are what you’re striving for on the big day, you can’t go wrong with this dress!

88

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

The Modified A-Line features a skirt that slips lightly past the hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. Slightly less forgiving than the A-Line Wedding dress-which flatters most body types-the modified A-line fits more snugly against the body. Petite women love this dress because of its elongating qualities and ultimate figure flattery!

The Trumpet Gown, like the Mermaid, hugs the body and really emphasizes the shape. However, the Trumpet dress is easier to walk in as it is slightly fuller and flares higher on the leg. If you’re not the most graceful of brides but still want the sleek, sexy look that the mermaid gown provides, the trumpet gown is your best option.

P LA N N I N G

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic column-like design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curve-hugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you!

F We met on the first day of college at Xavier University. I saw him staring at me from the back of the class when I was passing papers back and he chased me down after class saying, “Excuse me, excuse me. May I speak with you?” We became friends like that and then eventually started dating.

After visiting Ronnie in Washington DC, he snuck down to New Orleans and asked friends to show up on Xavier’s campus where I was walking with my mom when I heard “Excuse me, excuse me. May I speak with you?” I immediately froze and turned to see Ronnie in a suit with flowers. What I proceeded to do next has been the brunt of many jokes to come. Instead of crying and saying “I love you.” I immediately take off and start running in circles, saying “OMG!” I was in complete shock. After a few minutes of calming down, Ronnie got on one knee. I have no idea what he said next, but I said yes!

Our favorite moment during the wedding has to be at the very end when we were presented with our finished painting of our first dance by Pappion Artistry. I loved that within the painting, you can see our friends and family surrounding us, it was just very special and something I will always cherish.

Our wedding day was a day that could not get here fast enough, but when it did, it was everything we could have hoped for and more. Spending the weekend with our family and closest friends was the icing on the cake.

This beautifully exquisite shoot was designed on the grounds of an historic, Italian marketplace in the heart of the Lower Garden District. Il Mercato set the stage for this romantic, whimsical editorial shoot featuring a stunning Claire Pettibone gown. Color is the theme of the day as rich hues of navy, mustard yellow and copper accents bring a refreshingly vibrant color palette in the wake of last year’s trend toward neutral blush and bashful tones. The bride’s bohemian chic fishtail braid, bold chair and floral colors and an elegant, contemporary wedding cake also elevate this design aesthetic. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! ADVICE

W i sb er i d e How to Compromise?

Bridesmaid Recall?

Q

Q

My fiancé and I do not agree on anything for this wedding and it is starting to take a toll on our relationship, almost to the point where I just want to call the wedding off. What is the trick to compromising that we seem to be missing? ~ Nancy Burke, Belle Chasse, La.

A

If a big wedding is causing too much stress and drama, maybe taking it down a few notches is a good idea. A lot of couples end up with a much smaller event than they originally planned, and some even forego their plans altogether and elope because at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is you and your significant other. It’s not worth ruining your relationship trying to please others. Take a step back, a deep breath and figure out what is most important to you and your groom. Weddings are not one size fits all, so do what is best for you.

No Social Media

Q

Can I uninvite a bridesmaid? I asked a friend to be a maid over a year ago and we have barely spoken since and then she started complaining about flying down to all of the pre-ceremony events and worrying about the price of everything on top of that. She also does not seem to get along with the other girls, and I feel like I may be avoiding trouble if I uninvite her now. ~ Megan Gibson, Metairie, La.

A

This is tough because feelings may be hurt, but quite honestly it doesn’t sound like she is invested financially or emotionally in this wedding and it may be a relief to her to not have to go through with it. I would call her and just try to be as sensitive and calm as possible. Talk it out together and if she doesn’t seem like she wants to make it work, ask her if she would rather come as a guest. Keep calm and be supportive, even if you feel like she hasn’t been, because you don’t what her current situation may be.

Momzilla

This might sound crazy, but I really don’t want people sharing pictures of my wedding online. I feel like I’m being a pain, but it’s my wedding. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, plus I don’t want people on their phones through the ceremony either! What should I do? ~ Lesley Moore, Slidell, La.

My mom has taken over everything and it’s driving me and my fiancé nuts. She has changed things without our approval and doesn’t even seem to be following our theme anymore. How do I tell her to stop? ~ April Mitchell, Lafayette, La.

A

A

The easiest way to let people know not to share pictures on social media is to write something on the program. You’re within your rights to request no cameras at the ceremony, but you may have a hard time keeping them away at the reception. You can also ask close family and friends to spread the word, which might be the easiest way to keep everyone in check. Just try not to worry about it too much and focus on having a great time.

Q

You are not the first bride to feel like you have a ‘momzilla’, but the best way to handle mom is to tell her that you appreciate her efforts, but that you and your groom have something else in mind and she is hindering more than helping now. If you confront her and she still does not stop, gently remind her that her duty as the bride’s mom is to be supportive and help make your wedding day the happiest day of your life.

EVENT PLANNING

Plan the Perfect Winter Cocktail Hour

by Ana E. Seip

Got a pen? Here’s all you need:

Good drinks

Yummy appetizers

Fun music

Comfortable seating

The breakdown to a perfect cocktail party: The Drinks - A signature cocktail is key for a wedding. Choose something season appropriate and has a little bit of personality in it. And if the two of you don’t have the same taste in your spirits? Easy, have his and her drinks and let your guests pick their poison. Some of our winter favorites are a hot toddy, brandy milk punch, Moscow mule, Sazerac, anything with cranberry or mocha. Or keep it really simple with a champagne bar stocked with juices and garnishes like rosemary or rockcandy. And don’t forget the unique name! The Appetizers - Keep it clean and simple, and small! This is just an amuse-bouche so choose a few snacks you love like cheese, fruit, and veggies and get creative. Just remember, little expenses can become very big expenses if you are not paying attention. Taste wins over presentation every time. The Music - This is not the reception so keep the loud dance music for later. Now is the time for a chill mood and the music must be quiet enough that people can talk comfortably over it. The Seating - A scattering of low, plush seating is ideal, with plenty of tables to place food and drinks. If you do not have that option in your space, benches are a nice option so people can gather away from the formal tables.

Olé!

Creating a Spanish Inspired Engagement Party by Nadia Ramadan

Spain, one of Europe’s most fascinating countries, is known for its vibrant and passionate culture. Start your winter engagement off right with a Spanish inspired engagement party, overflowing with romantic Mediterranean details that are sure to inspire.

Whose ready to say Olé? Your engagement party is the first time before the wedding where different groups of friends and family can meet and get to know each other in a much more intimate way. Set up an inviting and festive atmosphere for your guests by providing them with a welcoming setting and an endless supply of good food and drinks. Andalusia Inspired Decor Do you dream of a Moorish winter honeymoon? Let the décor of your party transport you and your guests to the mountains of Southern Spain. Bright white stucco walls, handcrafted cobalt doors, intricate geometric tiles and hot pink bougainvillea blooms will be your inspiration for this Spanish fiesta.

120

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Create clean, elegant buffet tables with starched white table cloths that mimic the plastered walls of faraway Andalusian villages. Build a decorative display by using a mirrored tray to ground your design. Place fiery fuchsia blooms in dark cobalt vases and add geometric pattern with hand painted serving ware. Make charming DIY buffet tags by winding twine around wine corks and hot gluing cardstock cutouts to the corks. Anything goes when designing for any event; try to keep it fun and original.

Set the Mood with Music and Lighting Nothing is more important than setting the mood with music and lighting. The warm notes of a Spanish guitar make a lovely accompaniment to your candlelit space. Skip the usual centerpieces and create one-of-a-kind showpieces by placing battery powered candles into multicolored glass lanterns. If you are lucky enough to find uniquely shaped candle holders that resemble Moorish details, be sure to snatch them up! Scatter votive candles in between foods and décor to create ambient lighting.

Tasty Tapas and Fruity Sangria You certainly don’t have to serve a five-course sit-down dinner with an open bar (unless you want to), but there should definitely be something to munch and sip on at the party. Get creative with your Spanish themed party and serve a variety of delicious tapas! What are tapas? Tapas are Spanish finger foods that can be served both hot and cold. They can be anything from a bowl of marinated olives to cuts of mouthwatering meats on crusty bread. Guests will be free to mingle and sample different finger foods without having to sit down for a formal meal. No Spanish themed party is complete without a sangria in hand. Keep drinks simple by serving pitchers of both white and red sangria and a variety of Spanish beers. Skip the typical cake and serve Flan for a traditional Spanish dessert treat.

Say “Muchas Gracias!” With Memorable Favors Favors aren’t required, but consider sending everyone home with a token to remember the night. Leave guests with a sweet reminder of the celebration with a bag of Spanish wedding cookies or a DIY hand painted fan. Fans can be purchased online in bulk and can be easily decorated using acrylic paints.

M We began dating in 2009, after having known each other through mutual friends for years. Devin had moved back to Northern Virginia after graduating from Loyola University to start his career and I was also working in the area and bartending part time. Sparks flew after serving him the perfect pint of Guinness, his signature brew!

After a few months, Devin declared that one day, he would live in New Orleans again, and he would take me with him! Fast forward a few years, and we made the move from VA to NOLA. We built our life together here and our relationship flourished in the most romantic city in the world!

Devin proposed in 2013, on Christmas morning, under the Christmas tree. He’d spent months designing the perfect engagement ring with the help of family and friends in NY. After exchanging gifts, he said he had one more present for me but that I had to close my eyes! When I opened them, he was kneeling with the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen in one hand, and our kitten in the other and asked me to marry him.

One of the more memorable moments was after the ceremony when we snuck upstairs and took the time to reflected on our amazing day. We were able to look out over our cocktail hour from upstairs - it was truly humbling to see everyone we loved in one place for us. We are so grateful that we took those moments together to connect because the rest of the night was a whirlwind!

Thank You NOTES It’s been a wonderful journey. You started with finding your soul mate, then planning the wedding of your dreams and now you are settling in to start your life anew. Well, you still have one more wedding related task before you - thank you notes. Most people cringe at the thought of writing a personal note thanking each person who gave them a wedding gift. Keeping it simple and personal will make the task much less foreboding. Let your appreciation shine. Here are some tips to make the task a bit easier. North Productions

You can either have personal thank you notes made (perhaps with your monogram) or you can buy preprinted ones from your local stationery store.

Handwrite each note in blue or black ink only. They are much easier to read than other colors.

Mention each gift and how you will use the give, if possible. Try not to start with “I”. Use the word “you” more than “I” or “me” in the note.

Mention any special effort the giver may have put in for you such as traveling a long distance, giving a special toast, or throwing you a party or shower.

130

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

If someone was unable to attend your wedding, but still sent a gift, mention how sorry you were that they couldn’t be with you. Maybe offer to send them some pictures. Viewing your pictures online is standard for most photographers these days.

Always send separate notes for your shower and wedding gifts, even if you received them both within a short time of each other.

Try to be timely. It is proper etiquette to send a note within 2-3 weeks of receiving a gift, or 6-8 weeks at the very longest.

Fulfilling your

maid of honor Duties

You have been chosen to be the Maid of Honor at your friend’s wedding. I hope that you are excited, because it is a great privilege and one that not everyone gets to

experience. You will be the bride’s friend, go - between, sounding board and confidant throughout the entire wedding planning process. You may even be the one person she will choose to release her frustration on at times. Bridezilla, anyone? Anyway, hold on tight because it should be a wild, fun and unforgettable experience. The bride chose you because she considers you her closest friend and because she believes in you. Try to take as much pressure off of her as possible. Perhaps you can arrange a small get-together with all of the bridesmaids so that everyone can socialize in a relaxed

Consider A ‘Girls only’ or Couples shower 1. Decide the location 2. Choose a blank invitation package and create on your computer (inexpensive and classy) 3. Only invite wedding guests 4. Hold the shower at least two months prior to the wedding in the afternoon 5. Make sure to give party favors to all guests 6. Decorate in a creative and fun way 7. Choose some fun games to play (ideas online) 8. Choose the food (sandwiches, dips) 9. Make sure you get a great cake for the shower

environment and discuss dress fittings, the bachelorette party, etc. Always remember that although you are in charge of coordinating the bridesmaids, you should always be diplomatic, kind and courteous. Keep the ship sailing smoothly and deal with any problems in a calm and rational way. Planning the Bridal Shower is one of the most fun and practical duties that you will have. This event is traditionally an opportunity for the bride & groom to be showered with gifts to establish their new home. It is also a time for both families, friends and bridal party to spend some relaxing time together prior to the wedding. Go above and beyond in your planning. Be creative! You alone can set the entire tone for the wedding day with your decisions.

H We’ve known each other since kindergarten, and we starting dating when we were sophomores in high school. One day when we were both living in New Orleans finishing school, he said he wanted to go spend some time in City Park. When we got to the sitting area near the pond, he got on one knee and asked me to be his wife! It was absolutely perfect! The most special part of our engagement was when Brett had one of our friends secretly take pictures of the proposal. Then a year and a half later, two days before our wedding, he gave me the beautiful picture of us in City Park. I couldn’t believe he kept that secret for a year and a half!

When it came to planning the wedding, I can honestly say that it was not a stressful or high anxiety experience for me. When I had the time to plan, that’s when it happened. My mom and all my sisters were always there to help and support all the visions I had for the big day! There is only one word that can describe how I felt seeing all my decorations and ideas come together: perfection!

Brett said the best part of the day was when he saw me for the first time when I was walking down the isle. For me, it was everything! Not one moment was more perfect than the other. Everything was perfect from getting ready with my bridesmaids, to riding in the limo to the church with my parents, to the cake cutting. But the absolute best moment was becoming family with my best friend and now sharing our last name!

Majesty Louisiana Castle

Louisiana Castle, a replica of an English Norman Keep Castle, is one of the most breathtakingly romantic venues one could ever wish to see. Located in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, the grounds are meticulously maintained to accentuate the beauty and majesty of this unique venue. Outdoor ceremonies, elegant ballroom receptions, and a throne room for memorable photographs are just some of the factors that make Louisiana Castle stand out. The bridal suite, known as the Juliet Suite, occupies the entire top floor of the Castle and offers an incredible view of the grounds. The best part of a castle wedding: When the reception is over, everyone leaves and the entire Castle is yours! We spent a great day shooting at this magical venue and gathered some great vendors to assist. Exquisite jewelry and stunningly gorgeous hair was provided by Albert Brown Salon, turning our models into princesses. Enjoy!

2015 OUTDOOR WEDDING Almanac In New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our sub tropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together an almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

D I D YO U K N OW ? Fun Wedding Facts

In the United States, there is no law or religious dictate that says the bride must take the groom’s last name. However, approximately 70% of Americans agree that a bride should change her last name. Early Roman brides carried a bunch of herbs, such as garlic and rosemary, under their veils to symbolize fidelity and fertility and to ward off evil. These herbs served as a precursor to the modern bridal bouquet. The phrase “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe” symbolizes continuity, optimism for the future, borrowed happiness, fidelity, and wealth or good luck, respectively. Because white is the color of mourning in Eastern cultures, white wedding dresses are uncommon. Wedding rings are often placed on the third finger of the left hand because ancient Egyptians believed the vein in that hand (which the Romans called the “vein of love”) ran directly to the heart. The modern white veil became popular during the Victorian era as a symbol of purity and modesty. Flower girls traditionally threw flower petals in the bride’s path to lead her to a sweet, plentiful future.

Greek brides believed that tucking a lump of sugar into the wedding gown would bring sweetness throughout married life. Because ducks mate for life, a Korean groom will ask a happily married friend to make him two small wooden ducks for his new household. In Egypt, women will pinch the bride to bring good luck to those who pinched her. An average wedding in the United States has 175 guests. In Jewish weddings, if the bride is the last marriageable daughter in her family, her mother is crowned with a wreath of leaves (a krenzel) and family and friends dance around her. The busiest wedding days in the United States, in order of popularity, are Saturday afternoon, Saturday morning, Friday evening, and Sunday afternoon. A late afternoon or early evening wedding is generally more expensive than an earlier wedding In the U.S., the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company offers wedding insurance, which can cover any retaking of photographs, wedding attire or wedding gift replacements, and public liability. In several countries, including Germany and Greece, the bride attempts to cover her new husband’s foot while dancing in order to establish dominance.

Guests in ancient times would tear off part of the bride’s gown as tokens of good luck, which lead to the tradition of the bride throwing both her garter and her bouquet. The phrase “tying the knot” initially came from an ancient Babylonian custom in which threads from the clothes of both the bride and bridegroom were tied in a knot to symbolize the couple’s union. Literally tying some type of ceremonial knot at a wedding ceremony can be found across cultures. Pope Innocent III (1160/1-1216) declared that a waiting period should be observed between betrothal and marriage, which led to separate engagement and wedding rings. (Thank you, Pope Innocent!)

“Three times a bridesmaid, never a bride” dates to about the sixteenth century. It was believed that if young maiden who had been a bridesmaid three times was unable to catch the eye of unmarried males, then she never would. But, if she served seven times as a bridesmaid, the spell was broken and the woman was thought to be a sure bet for marriage. Find these and more fun facts at facts.randomhistory.com

G Our Rock ‘N Roll Wedding at Rock Fest, The Biggest Rock ‘N Roll Wedding Ever

We met at New Orleans Jazz Festival last May, during the Bruce Springsteen concert and we both knew we had met our match as our passion for music, fitness and life are shared so deeply between us both. Yes, she stole my heart, a true New Orleans lady, with such pride and love for her city!

We always wanted Avenged Sevenfold to play at our wedding, so we made our way up from New Orleans to see the show and got married on one of the side stages.

For the ceremony, we were dressed in both unconventional and equally fantastic clothing, as a king and queen. We both wore crowns, and Karol wore a gorgeous white and pink gown made with feathers. She stood out in the crowd in her gown, which matched her pink flowers and jewelry perfectly!

We loved that everyone at the concert could see our ceremony and to see how happy we were doing exactly what we wanted for our big day!

The best part of the day was at the end when Rock Fest gave us a wedding gift of an Avenged Sevenfold meet and greet, sending us back to New Orleans with the best memories a bride and groom could hope for.

If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger. storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hardto-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.

5.

For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid free cardboard “dress shaper” and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.
