FROM THE EDITOR

Hello and welcome to our fall issue. I sincerely hope that you enjoy it and find some inspiration within these pages. It was truly a labor of love to put together and I would like to thank my staff as well as all the vendors who were involved in its creation. Thank you! In light of all the recent divisiveness that seems so prevalent in our world, I would like to share a few words about love and tolerance. To me, marriage always comes back to the love between two people. It is a binding love, before God, in which two individuals choose to become one. A love in which problems, ever present, are tackled and fixed. A love in which grace lends herself freely to each individual in order to help the other in a time of need. A sharing, giving, compassionate love that is slow to anger and quick to understand. A love that transcends the world! I pray that each of you finds this love in your marriage, as it is the hope of a brighter future that keeps us all alive. I pray that your marriage is based on faith, love and peace and that a renewal of hearts and minds floods the earth producing married couples that love unconditionally. Change starts with one! Transcend!

God Bless,

Fall Ideas that aren’t so ‘Fall’

#1 The most common issue for brides planning their fall

weddings is choosing a ‘fall’ color palette. Usually, couples try to incorporate every obvious autumnal color they can think of, such as burgundy, auburn, chestnut, or any leaf-type colors. However, there are colors out there that scream fall just as much as the basic ones. Try placing some dark purples in your color scheme, or even some cream colors like blush and off-white. Gold is also appropriate, along with navy blue and some other dark colors. Gray. Pink. Silver. The options are limitless when concerning a fall palette. Black is also a great color to include in your color scheme. If you’re determined to use lighter colors that’s perfectly fine - just be sure to merge them with those deeper fall colors.

#2 Men are usually expected to wear dark suits for fall

weddings. While this is a nice classic look, it can be more fun to branch out into other colors. Instead of the darker look, men can wear a light grey suit with a dark tie to keep it in season, or even a khaki suit, which would blend nicely with all the different rich colors surrounding the cream color. Another good idea for a light colored suit is to have the boutonniere be a deep purple or green.

#3 Many people expect to have an indoor wedding during fall

season, but fall weather can be perfect for an outside wedding as well, especially in New Orleans. To accomplish this, you have to be prepared. Make sure your wedding ceremony is during the day so the chill isn’t as bad, and rent some heat lamps to make sure your guests can stay toasty and comfortable. Another great idea would be to have blankets brought out for your guests just in case the weather is a little bit colder than expected. The autumn season is a beautiful season – it would be wonderful to be married outside during this time as long as you are prepared.

#4

Having your wedding in the autumn season doesn’t mean you need to incorporate pumpkins as your main wedding décor. There are many other options to dress up your wedding for the fall season, such as wheat stalks, or any type of grain. You could feature pears, apples, or even grapes to set the fall atmosphere. Another idea is to place wine bottles around the reception space for the fall feel also. If you still want the pumpkin aspect to exist on your big day, make it a food option instead. For example, pumpkin pies, pumpkin soup as an appetizer, pumpkin cupcakes, or even pumpkin spiced lattes to warm up the insides.

PLANNING

Stacy Marks

When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

1.

State law requires a certified copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver.

2. If either party is divorced, he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree. 3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate. 4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required. 5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.

14

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Age Requirements If either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenile court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

General Information A Louisiana license is valid in any parish in Louisiana for 30 days. There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time of issuance and the ceremony. Only a district judge or Justice of the Peace can waive this. Newlyweds should order a certified copy of their marriage license two weeks after the marriage to ensure that the license has been returned and recorded.by Louis Photography

L We both went to Southern Miss for college and met during my first year. We met through mutual friends and would see each other almost every night. One day, our mutual friends set us up on a blind date. Next thing I know, we are going on dates every evening.

We were planning on taking Christmas pictures the night he proposed. We left dinner and headed to this gazebo my sister and her friend had been decorating all day. We pulled up and it was breathtaking. We began taking our “Christmas pictures” and next thing I know Hunter drops down to one knee and asks me to marry him! In an instant I said ‘yes’, I think I said ‘yes’ a hundred times.

Our lives and our parents’ lives were completely consumed with the wedding. We were so busy getting everything together. We were picking vendors, getting invitations printed, going to dress fittings, cake tastings, etc. It was crazy!

On our wedding day, we woke up to thunderstorms and our wedding was planned for outside. We were waiting and waiting all morning for the rain to let up and it would not. I was upstairs getting my hair and makeup done while having a mild panic attack. It was four hours until the ceremony when the rain stopped and the sun came out.

The band turned out to be amazing! They were such a crowd pleaser, they even had my dad, my mom and my mother-in-law all on stage dancing and singing the night away. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Hunter and I had a blast!

H It all started at Zea’s when I was a hostess while in school, and he was in pharmaceutical sales. He made a catering order and noticed me. Immediately, Frank inquired about me to my coworkers, who both favored him and felt he was a nice guy. After my coworker did a little manipulating, I ended up helping him one day and we really hit it off. That coworker gave him my number and he called me the same day!

On a trip to Maui, we were taking pictures on the beach, for what Frank said was just to remember the vacation, when the photographer told us to stop walking for a moment. I looked over and Frank was down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and of course I said yes! It was by far one of the most memorable and magical moments of our lives.

When planning, we went from a huge gaudy wedding with a guest list of 300, to a destination wedding of 12. Finally, we decided to meet in the middle and do a small intimate New Orleans wedding with a guest list of 75.

It was fate that we stumbled upon the hidden gem that was our wedding and reception venue, the Hotel Mazarin. It was the perfect place for the vision we had. The beautiful open courtyard where our ceremony took place gave us the option for shelter in the chance of rain or bad weather. This definitely was a relief being that the day of our wedding there was a frightening 80% chance of rain and we are blessed to say that the weather was miraculously perfect that day! It was so nice that the hotel personnel suggested we undrape the courtyard and allow the sun in. That was my favorite and most memorable part of our big day.

Beauty AUDUBON

This Audubon Beauty shoot brought us to the Audubon Nature Institute where we mingled with the wild animals and beasts. We had the pleasure of featuring the stunningly gorgeous Amita Raman who is an international model based in LA, but born in Nola. The beautiful dresses, fall flowers, and the elegant backdrop of the Audubon Zoo made this shoot one for the ages. The beauty among the beasts! Enjoy!

P We knew each other through mutual friends, but we finally met up for a movie date one night. I will never forget that night - Louis was so nervous the entire date.

We got engaged at Impastato’s Restaurant. I had no idea he was going to ask me to marry him. He had everything planned from the moment we walked in the door to the end when I said ‘yes.’ The waitress was in on it and everything.

The morning of the big day we all gathered at my sister-in-law’s house, which is located in Lafitte on the water. The backyard was the perfect spot to take bridals and bridesmaid pictures!

We had a beautiful Catholic ceremony. I passed out, not once, but twice! I have always had a history of fainting, but I never would have thought it would happen during my wedding ceremony! We definitely gave our guests a ceremony to remember.

It meant so much to Louis and I to see our son and daughter walk down the isle as our ring better and flower girl. I was so happy that they were there.

My uncle Kenny surprised me when he walked out in his white shrimp boots to have a dance with me. Seeing those white shrimp boots felt like home. It was very special to me that Swiss Bakery was able to make our groom’s cake look like Louis’ shrimp boat. It fit in perfectly with all the southern food!

PLANNING

8 Things

every Bride forgets by Troy Marks

46

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

1

The Rings Seal your rings in a special bag and put one person in charge of guarding them until the start to the ceremony. Do not allow your ring bearers to carry your real rings down the aisle. Put a pair of “fake” bands on the ring pillow and keep the real ones in a safe place.

2

Freshen Up (in between the ceremony and reception) Don’t forget to freshen up AFTER you walk down the aisle. This is the first time that you will be greeting most of your guests, so you’ll want to look your absolute best. Take a minute to freshen up your makeup and have a breath mint before the reception.

3

Hotel Plans Call the hotel to let them know how late you plan on checking in that night. Remind them that it’s your wedding day (so they may have champagne or assorted goodies waiting for your arrival). Once your overnight bags are packed, enlist a friend to take them over to the hotel.

4

Pack comfy shoes You’ll want (and need!) a beat up pair of sneakers or favorite flip flops to change into as the night wears on. Designate someone to make sure that they are at the reception location. You’ll thank them later!

5

Vendor Tips (in envelopes) Put each vendor’s CASH tip into a separate envelope and seal it up. Make sure to include the name of the company and the vendor on the outside to ensure proper delivery. Throw a rubber band around the stack and pass it off to a trusted friend or your wedding planner who can make sure these important players get their much-deserved thanks.

6

Drink water It’ll do wonders for your spirit and your complexion. And you won’t feel dehydrated, tired, or worn. The only downside? You may have to spend a few more minutes in the bathroom.

7

Avoid Honeymoon Hassles If you’re leaving for your honeymoon the morning after your wedding, call the airline the morning of your wedding to be sure there are no changes in your flight plans (or sign up for daily text alerts). Make sure your boarding passes and passports are tucked safely away in your luggage.

8

Ten Minutes Alone After the ceremony, be SURE to take some time to be alone with your new husband. As soon as you re-enter your wedding, you’ll be pulled in a million different directions. So savor this moment of new marital bliss. Even if it’s for just 10 minutes—it’ll probably be the best 10 minutes of the whole day. w w w . n o l aw ed d i n g g u i d e. co m

U We met when we were celebrating a mutual friend’s birthday at Red Eye Bar and Grill. It was love at first sight.

I went on a trip to visit family in St. Louis and Kent was to pick me up from the airport. When I got off of the plane I was greeted by Kent in the terminal on one knee, holding a sign saying, “Michelle, will you marry me?” Our family and friends were all there in disguises and hiding behind newspapers.

From the start we knew we wanted a true New Orleans style wedding. When we looked at Pat O’s on the River we knew it was the perfect place for us, especially since they were able to greet our guests at the entrance with hurricanes! Kent helped with some of the planning, such as the food and cake tastings, but most of it was whatever I wanted. The planning over all went very smooth. Our main goal for the night was to celebrate and for all of our guests to have a great time. That was achieved by having great music, food, drinks, and friends and family around us.

The best part of the day was definitely the music. We loved our band, 5 Finger Discount. Our favorite part of the reception would be when the band pulled us up on stage, handed Kent a microphone and me a guitar (NOT plugged in) and we all belted out “Don’t Stop Believing.”

PLANNING

balancing the

bridesmaid budget by Sarah Peneguy

Arte De Vie

Being asked to be part of a friend’s wedding day, can be exciting. It can make you feel special to be given an opportunity to celebrate your friend’s special day. Also, being a bridesmaid can be a lot of fun – the parties, the dresses, the champagne – but it can also be a drain financially. Below is a quick list to show how money seems to disappear when you’re a bridesmaid, and how to avoid it as best you can. THE DRESS First and foremost, the purchase you without a doubt know you’ll have to spend a significant amount of money on is the dress. On average, a bridesmaid’s dress is between $150 $250, and that’s only if you have a considerate bride. This is also not taking into account any alterations. However, there are alternatives. For example, Rent the Runway, offers dresses to rent at a much cheaper cost than outright buying it. If you have to buy the dress, a way to recoup some of your investment dollars would be to sell it after the fact.

60

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

THE BRIDAL SHOWER(S) Another expense is the parties you’ll have to prepare (pay) for. The bridal shower often calls for the bridesmaids to contribute to the decorations and the shower gift. On average, the cost for both of these combined is around $100 - $150. A way to save money is to possibly make the decorations yourselves. Pinterest has great ideas for crafting and can be a great inspirational source for shower decorations. Also, it’ll be more meaningful as the bride realizes how much effort you put into her shower. The Bachelorette Party Besides the dress, the bachelorette party is another big expense. The average cost is $350 - $400. Bachelorette parties can also sometimes involve travel, and can get even more expensive. This party is also usually when bridesmaid’s buy all that wonderful lingerie for the bride. The cost for lingerie is around $50. One way to save is to scour the Internet for deals. Groupon offers

coupons on multiple things, such as restaurants, spa days, hotels, and can help you save money. Last - but not cheap - are your personal wedding day preparations. Jewelry, shoes, hair, and make-up all together can cost around $250. One way to save is to do it yourself – that is if the bride allows it. You can give yourself a good manicure and pedicure at home, and also do your own hair and make-up. The wedding day jewelry can often be a gift from the bride, but if not, you could wear your own.

Oscar Rajo

Using the tips and suggestions above, will make it possible to be a great bridesmaid and have a great time with your friends without going broke in the process.

New Orleans’ marriage proposal expert, Stacey Asaro, recently announced the launch of Project Proposal, a company committed to helping deliver personalized marriage proposal ideas and coordinating the perfect engagement. Stacey’s lifelong experience as a wedding planner and coordinator gave her the idea for her new marriage proposal service: “I was born into the wedding industry with my parents owning Southern Oaks Plantation,” a New Orleans wedding reception facility with a five-star rating and a 30 year history. “It doesn’t matter if it’s an intimate proposal or one that’s really extravagant, we will make sure it’s truly something special.”

NWG: What was the inspiration for starting Project Proposal? SA: I recall waking up at 3 AM with the idea and immediately began writing notes on my phone – where I store all of my crazy middle-of-thenight schemes. I’ve been in the wedding business my entire life and it has developed my mind set around the ideas of love and romance. There are tons of stories I’ve heard through the years from friends and clients at Southern Oaks Plantation, my parent’s wedding venue, of botched proposals. Did you know over 85% of women are unhappy with the

way their husband proposed to them? Crazy, right?! Well I figured with my heritage based in weddings and romance, I would be the perfect candidate to help give the woman’s perspective on a dream proposal. Just the thought of planning a proposal puts a ton of stress on these guys, and anytime you mix stress with romance, you’re flirting with disaster. It is my dream to eliminate that stress and to help couples see their dreams come true.

NWG: Do the clients that hire you have ideas about how they would like to propose, or do you come up with the ideas? SA: My clients tend to have a general idea of what they want to happen, of what their partner would like to see on the big day they pop the question. The issue is figuring out how to hone in on this idea and make it a reality, which is where I step in. I’m there to help do all the planning and coordination, as well as give ideas and feedback to narrow down the best possible way to make her say “Yes!”

NWG: Is each proposal unique, or do you have a basic template that you follow? SA: I have a working template that I’ve been updating as I learn more and more about the industry. The wedding and planning industry as whole is constantly changing and you have to be able to adapt to stay successful – a lesson my parents, Bobby & Sue Asaro, have been teaching me at Southern Oaks my whole life. However, in no way could I make every proposal just a generic fill-in-the-blank template – it just wouldn’t work. For each client, I start with the template so I have a solid foundation to build on. From that, I mold a completely custom proposal based on each client’s vision. I need to know everything about the person they’re proposing to – what they like, what they hate, what TV shows they watch, etc. Basically, I have to live in that person’s shoes and envision what type of proposal would completely knock their socks off.

NWG: Why should someone hire you for their proposal? SA: I offer my services to give a unique female perspective without spoiling any surprises. I am here to save my clients time and stress. With my connection to a wide variety of vendors in the industry, I am able to get discounted rates and easily access a wealth of quality resources that most people would spend weeks or months coordinating while burning a hole in their pocket in the process. I will execute every last detail to ensure that each proposal experience is a story worth telling for years to come.

NWG: What are your personal favorite proposal stories? SA: I don’t care if it sounds cliché, my favorite proposal story is absolutely my own father’s! His proposal was actually the inspiration for our photo shoot here. When he decided to pop the question, his gears started turning instantly. He scheduled a date for my mom and had her waiting up on a balcony. He had the works – a stretch limo, a jazz band, and a huge banner held up by my mom’s family. They all paraded down the street while my dad was wearing the same blazer from the first day they met, holding a large bouquet of roses and yelling, “Ms. Sue! Will you marry me?!” I wish I could’ve been there!

NWG: Are you going to plan your own proposal? SA: As great of a job I think I’d do at my proposal, I truly want to be surprised and have my breath taken away just like every other girl. However, I do think he should seek some womanly advice to make it absolutely perfect. I’m not worried in the least bit, I found a guy who is just as creative and romantic as I am!

F E AT U R E D C O U P L E

We love to feature real couples as much as we can in the Nola Wedding Guide. Their stories and ideas serve as inspiration to our readers, and we also enjoy hearing all about their love and wedding planning experiences. One of the most popular ways to tell these stores is through our Featured Couple Facebook Contest. Since we started the contest a few years ago it has grown into a much anticipated and highly coveted staple for each issue. This issue’s winners of our Featured Couple contest are Mia Gonzales and Tolliver Washington. Their wedding will be on July 4, 2015, and we are happy to share their love story and wedding plans. NWG: How did you meet? Mia: We met at my very first college party in 2004, it was also his first off campus event. Tolliver: The first college party of the semester. NWG: Describe your first date. Tolliver: It consisted of a movie in my dorm with Chick-fil-A. Mia: If this is even considered a date: I met him at his campus, UNO, in between my classes at Xavier and he took me to Chick-fil-A, then we watched TV in his dorm. The Chick-fil-A turned into a habit, because he quickly realized the way to my heart was through my stomach!

NWG: Describe your courtship. Tolliver: After one week of us getting reconnected, I was off to Afghanistan. During my time there, flowers, stuffed animals, and gifts were sent regularly to her. She supported me in return with care packages filled with all kinds of stuff from home. Mia: Because he was stationed in Afghanistan, it consisted of about 11 months apart, actually. We had to carefully schedule video chats due to our 10 hour time difference, which usually took place in the mid morning for me, as that was late evening for him, or visa versa. We used a really great app called Couple, too, which allowed us to communicate almost daily (when he wasn’t out on missions). NWG: How did he propose? Mia: Tolliver returned from Afghanistan in August of 2014 and we took a welcome home cruise. On the last day of the cruise, he entered us into a couples’ scavenger hunt on the ship to collect cards that would spell a message at the end of the night at the comedy show. The comedy show host called up all of the couples that were participating in the scavenger hunt, and low and behold, it was just us. There was no couples’ scavenger hunt on the cruise ship! Tolliver created the entire game and got the cruise employees involved! While on stage, Tolliver handed me the cards that we had collected throughout the day, but first he organized them to read, “Will you marry me?” He got on one knee with the microphone, and asked me to marry him., and I said, “yes!” w w w . n o l aw ed d i n g g u i d e. co m

NWG: How has the planning gone so far?

NWG: Any advice for future couples?

Mia: The planning for the wedding and reception has been wonderful! We intentionally didn’t hire a planner, as we felt that he and I were the best people to plan our own big day! Tolliver has been very hands on and involved, and that’s why it’s been so great.

Mia: My advice to future couples is to invest into your marriage like you invest into your wedding day. Those few hours are nothing in comparison to the lifetime you’ll spend together. If you spend $30,000, for example, on your big day, then be prepared to invest at least that same amount on resources over your lives together to ensure your marriage stays healthy in all aspects. Also, start planning early and minimize your DIY projects, just to make your life easier.

Tolliver: It’s been smooth. Not too many surprises. Our families are as supportive as can be, but we took on most of the expenses. NWG: Tell us about some of your wedding vendors. Mia: LACE The Grand Ballroom, our reception venue, is so beautiful and spacious and the food is to die for! The owner, Lisa A. Crinel, has been very accommodating and resourceful. In fact, she led us to our Coordinator, Charlotte Neveaux of Balloon Creations & Event Planning, LLC. Tolliver: Ms. Lisa at LACE is AWESOME! She is a true professional and was helpful with all the questions we had. Bee’s Floral was super easy and gave us a great deal on things. Ms. Charlotte our wedding coordinator is sharp and knowledgeable, too, which made things easier.

The first look Is it right for you?

There seems to be more of an emphasis on the unique and the individual in today’s society, and it can be seen more and more in today’s weddings. A new trend that is sweeping the wedding photography and videography industry is “The First Look.” This is when the bride and the groom meet each other prior to the ceremony and this emotionally charged reveal is thoroughly documented. This new concept is quickly becoming a great way to get some great moments captured in a very intimate way. The Reveal The First Look typically starts with the bride approaching the groom while his back is turned. As she makes her presence known, the emotions portrayed on their faces as they first see each other are priceless memories. The First Look can take place at the hotel where both the bride and groom are getting ready or they can opt to have it take place at the ceremony venue a few minutes prior to the start. Tradition Some brides are still hesitant to do the First Look, as they are superstitious. The idea of waiting until the actual ceremony for the groom to see the bride dates back to an age when marriages were arranged. It was common for a groom to not meet his bride until the actual ceremony. In the event that he didn’t like her physically, the marriage would still go on. In modern times, the reveal comes when the groom sees the bride coming down the aisle for the first time. The photographer and videographer capture both the reaction of the groom and the bride. The First Look allows for a more accurate depiction of the moment and its beauty, as there are no worries about the stipulations that some churches put on the photographers and videographers. The First Look originated from the Jewish tradition of the bride and groom seeing each other prior to the ceremony to sign the marriage document or Ketubah. Options Some brides put a twist on the First Look. They will have their groom don a blindfold as she approaches him. Others

will have their groom open a door to see his bride. Some take the “Wizard of Oz” approach and are revealed from behind a curtain. Still, some brides get as creative as popping out of a box! The First Look surely invites you to be creative as it is non traditional and has no set rules. So if you are a couple who values their photos and video highly, the First Look can provide extra time to capture great images. You can also enjoy one-on-one time before the ceremony, and knocking out the formal photos early can only help relieve the stress of getting it done after the ceremony. w w w . n o l aw ed d i n g g u i d e. co m

Dress to Impress

PLANNING

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. Usually matched with fitted bodices, these dresses flare out from the hips, providing just the right amount of sensational and over-the-top glamour. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. However, if high drama and spellbinding impact are what you’re striving for on the big day, you can’t go wrong with this dress!

78

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

The Modified A-Line features a skirt that slips lightly past the hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. Slightly less forgiving than the A-Line Wedding dress-which flatters most body types-the modified A-line fits more snugly against the body. Petite women love this dress because of its elongating qualities and ultimate figure flattery!

The Trumpet Gown, like the Mermaid, hugs the body and really emphasizes the shape. However, the Trumpet dress is easier to walk in as it is slightly fuller and flares higher on the leg. If you’re not the most graceful of brides but still want the sleek, sexy look that the mermaid gown provides, the trumpet gown is your best option.

PLANNING

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic column-like design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curve-hugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you!

K We met on a foggy morning during a field trip both our daughters were attending. Niki approached me later in the day during the petting zoo portion to introduce herself. I was taken immediately. After some small talk we parted, knowing we’d see each other around, since our daughters just happened to be best friends.

Late one afternoon, I was sitting with one of our daughters, Jaden, on the front porch when Niki came home from work. She asked me if I would like to see her mood board from the day’s Salon class. I excitedly said ‘yes’. As she unravels the board, the following appears in big bold letters: WILL YOU MARRY ME? I was so shocked all I could think to say was, “Well...um…do you have a ring?” Niki then precedes to hand me a titanium band that has the coordinates of where we first met - at the swamp tour field trip.

The wedding was a 1920’s themed event that was one for the ages. The entire bridal party as well as the guests were dressed to the nine’s in their best 1920’s attire.

Niki was draped in a black custom couture bridal gown designed by Falguni & Shane Peacock, a gift for our special day. A dress like I have never seen before. It was spectacular.

Alterations 101: Tips for the Perfect Fit

by Aria M. Mason

You’re on a quest for the dress of your dreams. You’ve found it and it takes your breath away…but it doesn’t quite fit. The salesperson assures you it WILL fit when you head down the aisle. How can you be sure it’s not just a sales pitch? Following the suggestions below can ensure that on your special day, everything looks –and fits- just as it should.

Know your size. Bridal sizing differs from sizing for street clothes. Often, it’s two sizes above your regular size. If you’re interested in a particular designer, make sure to view their sizing guide so you can know what to ask for at the boutique. You want the size that comfortably fits the largest part of your body and is as near to your regular size as possible. A dress that is too big will almost certainly need rebuilding if you purchase the sample and you may not like the fit. Similarly, in regards to a dress that is too small, it is difficult (and costly) to let out a dress more than one or two sizes, especially if the fabric offers little seam allowance (such as silk, satin, or velvet) without the original seam line showing.

Leave the clamps at Home Depot. Every wedding show brings out those big white clamps to give you the perfect silhouette in the gown. However, sometimes the image in the mirror isn’t what you’ll get once it’s altered. Instead, ask for someone in alterations to come pin the dress, if possible, so you can get a feel for what the actual modifications to the dress will look like.

Ask about the fine print. Some bridal salons advertise “free alterations”. Unfortunately, that often means the minimum- taking up hems, shortening straps, repairing loose beadwork, etc. That doesn’t necessarily include taking in or

84

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

letting out a dress several sizes, altering the waistline, or adding additional beadwork or sleeves. If extensive alterations aren’t in their included offerings, you may be best served by having your work done by a tailor or modiste. Be cautious in allowing your alterations to be done by a friend or family member: your wedding dress shouldn’t be someone’s learning curve. Make an appointment. If the boutique offers alterations appointments, I strongly suggest you make one. Find a slot that allows for a full hour; don’t try to squeeze a fitting into an already busy day or your lunch break. Ask the shop to recommend a good time to come in. Alert, kind seamstresses and brides are happy seamstresses and brides! Make an evening appointment on a weekday (avoid Saturdays for fittings if at all possible). You want their full concentration on your dress.

Bring your foundation garments and shoes to ALL of your fittings. Yes, this is absolutely necessary. They should also fit correctly. Even if they don't appear to drastically shape you, your foundation garments (including bridal slip and Spanx) WILL affect the way the dress hangs on your figure. You don’t want to end up with a different fit on your wedding day because of a different bra. Depending upon the cut of the dress, wearing the wrong bra can even affect whether the hem hangs evenly. If you’re not able to get shoes you want before your fitting, wear shoes at the same heel height as your intended purchase and have the hem marked for the next fitting, when you can bring the pair you’ll actually wear.

Don’t trip. No, really. If you aren’t confident in your ability to glide everywhere with ease, get your hem taken up to about 1” from the floor. You’ll be at a heightened anxiety level on your big day, and you want to ensure you can remain effortlessly glamorous throughout. If you are wearing a long

veil, I recommend trying it on with your dress to make sure the hem of the dress and the fall of the veil correspond.

Get fitted later than sooner. Have your fittings –ideally, three- scheduled within two months of your big day. Fitting done too early means that whatever weight you gain or lose during your planning process won’t impact the fit of your dress too greatly. No one wants to be mainlining fried chicken (or the Master Cleanse!) during the most exciting time of their betrothal because they jumped the gun. Your last fitting should be two weeks before your wedding so any problems that arise have enough time to be corrected.

Courteous brides get the best fits. It should go without saying, but arrive for your fitting clean, gum and beverage free, and polite. Your tailor will appreciate it. Try not to move around too much while they are pinning: it ensures the most accurate fit and keeps you from getting stuck. Listen with an open mind to their recommendations about your dress-

they are professionals who are intimately familiar with garment construction, and may know of a better way to make the look match your vision. You can get a second opinion after the fact, but hear them out.

Take your posse. Have your mom, maid of honor, or a close friend come with you to at least two fittings, especially the final fitting. They bring a valuable second pair of eyes to the gowns’ fit, and spot any problem areas you or the seamstress hasn’t spotted. They will also be able to find out how to best zip, lace, and bustle your gown from the experts, so it can be replicated correctly on your wedding day. If no one can accompany you, ask for the directions to be written down.

Test the fit. You want to be able to dance, sit, hug, and walk on your big day. After the dress has been pinned to you and you’re given the all clear to leave the pedestal, take a minute to get down and move around so you can let the seamstress know if adjustments need to be made.

Aria M. Mason is the daughter of a bride who made her dress without a pattern, the niece, granddaughter and great granddaughter of modistes, a three time MOH, and has been sewing costumes and gowns for nearly 20 years. #HappilyEverHatcher Hashtag Your Wedding The hashtag, or pound sign, as we once knew it, has become an international phenomenon. It’s a fun and easy way for people to gather their thoughts and pictures on a specific topic. When we came across featured couple contestants Jamie Lombardino and Justin Hatcher’s hashtag, #HappilyEverHatcher, we loved it. Jamie is the owner of Southern Charm Make-up Artistry, while also working for Neill Corporation as a sales representative. Justin coaches football at Sumner High School and is head of accounts receivable for his family business, Hatcher’s Dairy Farm. They met at a restaurant where Jamie was working as a waitress and they immediately clicked. Their first date was at a coffee house and in the fall of 2014, Justin proposed at the Le Pavilion Hotel in New Orleans, while

98

nola wedding guide

they were drinking their morning coffee. Jamie noticed the cup came with a very special question on the outside: “Will you marry me?” but didn’t immediately make the correlation until she had finished her coffee. Once Justin turned the cup around for her to see, Jamie realized what was happening. At that moment Justin got down on one knee and asked her if she would be his wife. With a Halloween wedding in the works for this year, the couple said that their planning process has been a fun and incredible experience. The couples’ advice to future couples is to “always keep open communication, especially when it comes to each other’s vision for the wedding. Being on the same page and incorporating each other’s likes and interests makes it so special, exciting and totally unique!”

It is clear to see that Jamie and Justin live by their own advice. Their wedding certainly shows this uniqueness as well. With their clever hashtag, the couple can now enjoy all the social media activity surrounding their wedding. From the words of Jamie: “We are on our way to #HappilyEverHatcher”. Have you created your own wedding hashtag yet? If not, start thinking of one now! Once you have picked your hashtag spread the word to your guest by putting it on your wedding website, save-the-date, and wedding program. At the reception, have a sign placed on the welcome table to remind guests to use your hashtag. This will ensure that you and your groom will be able to experience the big day through the eyes of your guests. Create a unique and catchy hashtag that your guests won’t soon forget. You can go the classic names and wedding date route, or you can get creative like our couple Justin and Jamie. Photos by Secondline Photography

ADVICE

W i sb er i d e Church or Destination Wedding?

Q

My family wants me to have my wedding in a church, and I would rather have a destination wedding. What should I do? ~ Anita Jessup, New Orleans, La.

A

This issue has arisen many times in the past and probably will continue to arise as long as people are getting married. The age-old problem of “What your family wants versus what you want.” For starters, I suggest communication. Explain to your family that having a destination wedding would be more meaningful to you and your future husband and the reasons why. Make sure that they understand that you respect their feelings and you want them present for the big day. Ultimately, though, it is your decision and you should base it on whatever you are most comfortable with. It truly is your day.

RSVPs

Q

I still have many people who have yet to RSVP. How do I prepare for people who show up without RSVP-ing? ~ Collette Dallimore, Baton Rouge, La.

A

The safest bet is just to plan on them coming. This route is the less stressful of the two. It is likely that guests are going to show up to the ceremony without notice; there is honestly no way to stop this from happening. So being prepared for it puts you one step ahead of the game, and let’s you have a more enjoyable night. Be sure to find out from your reception venue what the cost will be if you exceed your maximum amount of guests.

Are Plus-Ones Necessary for Everyone?

Q

I’m on a tight budget. Do all my guests need plusones? Would it be acceptable to only give that option to some guests? ~ Barbara Menendez, Monroe, La.

100

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

A

It would be nice to allow all your guests a plus-one, but if you are going for a small and budget-friendly wedding, your friends and family should understand. In order to prevent any misinterpretation, specify on the RSVP card how many guests are expected to attend.

Thank You Notes

Q

It’s been several months since our wedding and we have yet to finish all the thank you notes. Is it still necessary to write them? – Ashley Charbonnet – Luling, La.

A

Yes, it is absolutely necessary to let your guests know how grateful you are to them for attending your big day. A less specific thank-you note is still better than none at all. Better late than never. Get writing!

Coordinating Out-of-Town Guests

Q

How do we plan and coordinate events when everyone lives in separate cities? – Patricia Roy, Jennings, La.

A

Modern technology makes this problem easily solved. Consider starting a wedding website and listing all of your wedding details there. There are many sites that offer these websites free of charge. You can send out the address via e-mail and social media, and have everyone check there for the latest details about your wedding.

Décor

top 5 Picks for Fall Wedding

by Nadia Ramadan

Planning your fall wedding can be a totally exhilarating design experience. Whether you’re getting married simply or are creating an outrageously decadent affair, incorporating the right décor for your setting is key to creating a one-of-a-kind experience. “Fall” head over heels for my top picks for your upcoming wedding!

1. Hanging Centerpieces

While a ceiling may not be the first thing in your wedding décor list, these innovative centerpieces save on table space and create an uncluttered appearance. Not only can guests now see each other, but the whimsical décor with also be a hot topic of conversation. You can even add ambient lighting to your arrangements. Create a romantic glow with no distracting electrical cables by using battery powered LED lighting. Also think about suspending elements like glass bubbles, branches and crystals for a big WOW.

2. Passionate for Pomegranate

Punch up the traditional fall colors with the vibrate pallet of pink and red and forget about the overused fall pumpkin theme. Spray paint pomegranates in gold or copper to make gorgeous name tag holders, as well as interesting additions to centerpieces and even wedding bouquets!

3. Charmed Outdoor

There is nothing more enjoyable than going to a low key outdoor New Orleans wedding. Cool fall weather paired with the twinkle of fairy lights creates a dreamy atmosphere.

104

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Make the night even trendier with the addition of a local food truck. Delicious-smelling food trucks are the next big wedding catering thing and they are capable of feeding a lot of people quickly. Create a magical feeling by draping fairy lights throughout the venue. Sometimes referred to as Firefly lights, these tiny LED lights give off a warm yet vibrant glow.

4. Photos by Drone

Is it a bird? A plane? Nope, it’s just the wedding photographer. These high-tech machines produce beautiful, cinematic aerial shots of your wedding while they buzz above wedding guests’ heads. Even though these flying cameras take incredible photos, couples should take into consideration the pros and cons before hiring one for their wedding. While there is no better photography angle available, most drones are noisy and the cameras are not the highest quality. Hire an experienced photographer who will not only take fantastic photos, but also someone who will take safely into consideration. With all that said, the advantages of the sweeping panoramic snapshots of your magical day are well worth the headache of hiring the right photographer.

5. copper metal

Gold and silver, step aside! There’s a new metal accent taking over the wedding scene. From polished copper centerpieces to copper drink ware, this metallic is definitely on trend. Polished copper works well in glamorous, upscale settings. Whereas, matte copper looks incredible in vintage inspired wedding décor.

Z Chase and I met through mutual friends at Mellow Mushroom near LSU campus in the fall of 2006. We started dating in May 2007, and continued while we both pursued undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The proposal was very romantic, right out of a fairy tale! In June 2013, we went on vacation with my family to Disney World. One evening, Chase and I were planning to watch the fireworks show in Magic Kingdom. While leaving the hotel resort, we asked about scheduling a horse drawn carriage ride. The driver told us that the next reservation had canceled so we changed our plans and hopped on. The driver recommended a great photo spot midway through the ride. When we got out of the carriage, there was a photographer and Chase got down on one knee with the engagement ring and an engraved glass slipper. Apparently Chase had planned this with Disney personnel for weeks.

My most memorable moment was when the doors opened as my dad and I were in the back of the church. Seeing the church filled with our family and friends and Chase at the other end of the aisle was breathtaking. Chase and I were so moved by how many of our families and friends came to support us and witness the beginning of our lives together.

For our first dance we had a choreographed dance planned with a mash up of three songs: “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King, “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars, and “Honey Bee” by Blake Shelton. The dance was going well until my dress got in the way! We just winged the rest of the dance as best we could! The whole reception was just amazing; everyone danced all night long!

Floral Fashionably

Headbands

Floral headbands have gone in and out of style for centuries, but have remained a wedding tradition in many cultures because they represent love, fertility, honor, and religious beliefs. Today, floral headbands can add a pop of color and can be a fun way to personalize your bridal look. If you’re thinking of wearing a floral headband on your big day, here’s a list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you achieve a modern twist on this timeless trend.

114

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

DO Take this look into fall by using an autumn color palette, and don’t be afraid to add some natural extras like bark, twigs, acorns, and artificial berries.

DON’T Place a lot on the top of your head. Keep things spread out and off center to avoid looking like your just balancing a vase on your head.

DO Keep it small if you’re not totally sure of the trend. You will look back at your pictures and wonder what you were thinking if it doesn’t match your personality.

DON’T Go overboard on the size if you are using artificial flowers, it will look unnatural.

DO Keep the headband pushed back and out of your eyes so that everyone can see your pretty face.

DON’T Wear big earrings or a necklace if you’re wearing a substantial headpiece. Let the focus be on one special accessory at a time.

DO Wrap your hair around the band in the back to create a soft goddess look. Hint: this look looks amazing with soft ringlets and some face framing pieces hanging down.

DON’T Wear crazy makeup if you are doing a big headpiece. Keep your makeup light and feminine.

DO Try a metal floral clip if you’re not feeling the real florals. They are a nod to nature without the fuss of flowers.

DON’T Worry what others will think. This is your day and your chance to show your friends and family who you really are, and if you want to rock some flowers in your hair, then go for it!

PLANNING

Thank You NOTES It’s been a wonderful journey. You started with finding your soul mate, then planning the wedding of your dreams and now you are settling in to start your life anew. Well, you still have one more wedding related task before you - thank you notes. Most people cringe at the thought of writing a personal note thanking each person who gave them a wedding gift. Keeping it simple and personal will make the task much less foreboding. Let your appreciation shine. Here are some tips to make the task a bit easier. North Productions

You can either have personal thank you notes made (perhaps with your monogram) or you can buy preprinted ones from your local stationery store.

Handwrite each note in blue or black ink only. They are much easier to read than other colors.

Mention each gift and how you will use the give, if possible. Try not to start with “I”. Use the word “you” more than “I” or “me” in the note.

Mention any special effort the giver may have put in for you such as traveling a long distance, giving a special toast, or throwing you a party or shower.

118

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

If someone was unable to attend your wedding, but still sent a gift, mention how sorry you were that they couldn’t be with you. Maybe offer to send them some pictures. Viewing your pictures online is standard for most photographers these days.

Always send separate notes for your shower and wedding gifts, even if you received them both within a short time of each other.

Try to be timely. It is proper etiquette to send a note within 2-3 weeks of receiving a gift, or 6-8 weeks at the very longest.

Technology Trends for

2015

by Troy Marks

With all the technological advances that are being made almost daily, it is only fitting that some of those would make their way to the wedding industry. Some modern couples are really bucking tradition and incorporating the latest and greatest innovations on their wedding day. Taking advantage of technology can afford the forward thinking couple benefits that weren’t available to yesterday’s brides and grooms. Including some of the tips below on your wedding day will not only enhance your day, but will also leave your guests marveling at your brilliance.

Selfie Sticks Everybody loves selfies. Getting some selfie sticks to pass around at the wedding will give you a real ground level perspective of the reception. Consider: Creating a hashtag for your wedding to gather all of the photos. You may even consider projecting them onto a designated screen.

120

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Drones for Never Before Seen Photos and Video Many photographers and videographers are using drone technology to capture weddings in new and exciting ways. Getting an aerial view of your entire wedding can be absolutely breathtaking. These drone pictures or video can give you a perspective on your overall wedding that simply wasn’t possible prior to this technology. Consider: Replace the ring bearer and allow the drone to drop off your rings at the altar. People will talk about it for years to come!

GoPro Bridal Bouquets Hiding a small GoPro like camera in your bridal bouquet will give you a first person perspective as you walk down the aisle. This most important moment should be captured in as many ways as possible. Seeing the look on your grooms face as you walk towards him will send chills up your spine every time you view it. Consider: Placing a hidden GoPro discreetly in the reception area to catch some candid moments.

Projections On Your Wedding Cake Many lighting and design companies are creating really elaborate projections for wedding cakes. The really interesting thing is that you can map literally anything you want onto your cake. Disney first introduced this technology with a line of wedding cakes. Consider: Light-mapping flowers in your wedding color onto your cake or perhaps include parts of your vows written in an elegant font

Periscope While live streaming events is certainly not cutting edge technology, the means in which to do it certainly is. Using the Periscope App, you can live stream you’re wedding to your friends and family who couldn’t attend straight from your phone or tablet to theirs. Consider: Having a designated person to Periscope the wedding. Have them break it up into segments, ceremony, reception, first dance, etc… for easier viewing.

T Daniel and I met when I began St. Beinilde School in 5th Grade. In 2007, we met back up at my cousin Casey’s house. He did not remember me. He wanted to date me but I wasn’t interested at the time. Then finally on Valentine’s Day the following year we had our first date. This was the start of our life together.

I was just waiting for him to pop the question. Daniel said he would never ask me to marry him on a special day. On Christmas Eve, Daniel’s family and I did a dance to “All the Single Ladies”, when it ended and I turned around, Daniel was on his knee popping the question. I was so excited. I could not stop shaking.

I always thought I was a princess, so I wanted a fairy-tale wedding with a lot of bling. I always wanted our reception at Southern Oaks Plantation with a grand entrance by a horse and carriage ride with a beautiful display of fireworks in the sky. At that moment, Southern Oaks made us feel like a prince and princess and I knew my dreams had come true.

Our ceremony was at a small quaint church in New Orleans called St. Theresa of Avila.

The night continued on with the start of our first dance. We had a special choreographed dance preformed by the wedding party, Daniel, and I. That started the party rolling.

Checker Box founder Randy Gervais has had an entrepreneurial drive for as long as he can remember. Being immersed in a world of suits and uniforms most of his life, Randy has always sought self-expression through accessories. When his quest for a pair of socks meeting his specifications fell short of success, he decided to stop looking and start making. With the support of his parents, this once simple desire suddenly evolved into his sole mission. At the age of 17, Randy decided he was going to break into the fashion industry with an idea for high-end socks that were fresh and creative. By day, he was a senior in high school and by night, he was busy creating cutting edge designs that would inspire and connect with consumers. At Checker Box, it’s about enjoying the finer things in life, and believing that comfort, style, and creative self-expression are the keys to fulfillment. A desire to couple this concept with a 1950’s era flare, truly round out the Checker Box brand.

PLANNING

2015 OUTDOOR WEDDING Almanac In New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our sub tropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together an almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

PLANNING

Second Line Parade If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line.” The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone,

sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band.

PLANNING

Why You Must Hire a

Wedding Videographer by Elly Seip

If you do not hire a videographer for your wedding, you will regret it. The tragic thing about this is that you won’t realize the mistake until after the fact and it’s too late. Budgeting concerns lead some to not hire a videographer, but the cost is small compared to the memories you’ll be cherishing for a lifetime. When choosing a videographer, look at their work and decide which style suits you more: cinematic or documentary. Also, consider the personality of the person, as you will be spending the biggest day of your life with them. One last thing to make sure of is that the person you hire, will be the person shooting your wedding. You don’t want to be someone’s 3rd wedding of the day. Here is a list of reasons why having a videographer at your wedding is not only the right decision, but also an absolute necessity. =Photos are a perfect freeze frame, but nothing brings you back like watching it all happening all over again. =The big day will go by so quickly, you will wish you could watch it over and over again and see the details you missed. =You may not think you want to relive every second of your wedding, but years from now, you will be grateful to have every second back. =Seeing your family members captured on video is much more special than just having them in photos. Video (moving pictures) captures voices, mannerisms, and facial expressions that a photographer simply cannot.

152

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

=You can make it a family tradition to watch it every anniversary, or even when you need a small reminder as to why you got married in the first place. =Believe it or not, others will want to see your video as well. Looking back on how beautiful you looked, how they have changed over the years, seeing lost family members…the list can go on and on. =Your children will love to see their parents’ wedding video, and will cherish it forever. Take our advice. Hire a wedding videographer. If you have to cut your budget somewhere else, then do it. Don’t be the bride that wishes, after the fact, that you had a wedding video, but didn’t think it was that important. You will thank us later!

Moments you will not want to forget: =Even if you hate being recorded, the raw

emotion that is captured during your vows and your first dance will be forever documented.

=Your bridesmaids walking down the aisle.

Something you won’t be able to see while you’re waiting for your own turn down the aisle.

=Your father’s sweet toast at the reception. =Older family members having fun on the

dance floor.

=Your first dance, in motion. =Your husband’s facial expression when he sees

you for the first time.

G We met in Charleston, South Carolina at the wedding rehearsal for our mutual friends. After John gave an unforgettable speech at the table I was unsure about him, but after dinner he approached me at the bar and asked: Are you Catholic? Do you have a cat? Can I buy you a beer? Catholic, yes. Cat, no. Beer, yes. And the rest is history…

While on vacation near South Haven, Michigan last year, John arranged some oars, corn, flowers, tree limbs, a lily, and some bananas to spell out “Will you marry me?” on the dock. When I saw the message, and John on one knee I kept saying, “you picked me, you picked me!” We are still not sure when I actually said yes.

A very special part of our day was that John’s uncle, who is the Bishop in St. Louis, made the trip as well as our good friend, who is a Priest in Chicago, so they were our Celebrant and Co-Celebrant.

After the wedding reception, I slipped into something better for the NOLA streets and “Big Fun Brass Band” led a Second Line from BK House down Decatur all the way to Claire’s Pour House, where the party kept rolling.

At the after party, my uncle, Al Fruge from Lafayette, brought his accordion and we sat on the bar with Uncle Al and sang some interesting tunes into the night.

1. you can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger. storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hardto-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.

5.

For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid free cardboard “dress shaper” and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.
